Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Mike Olt is only player in baseball history to homer for the Cubs and White Sox in the same season.

-- SF Giant centerfielders have three HRs this year; Giant pitchers have nine.

-- 94 of 146 Cincinnati games this season have been started by rookie pitchers.

-- Four Missouri football players were injured in a car accident Friday; two are still in the hospital, two were released with minor injuries.

-- Pirates lost SS Jung Ho Kang for the season Thursday; tough loss for them.

-- Five of the last six college football national champs were using a starting QB who was in his first season as the starter.

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind......

13) Broncos 31, Chiefs 24-- One of three worst regular season losses I can remember, just a complete debacle by the Chiefs, who turned ball over five times, giving Denver a TD in last 2:00 of each half. Its a 16-game season; hard to just give one away.

By the way, Giants-Eagles in '78 and 49ers-Bengals in '87 were other two losses that stood out to me as complete disasters. All three teams that lost were at home.

12) Florida State 14,, Boston College 0-- Good lord, recruit a QB who can throw the ball. BC was 5-15 passing for 56 yards and backup QB Flutie (Doug's nephew) did some of that. You ain't beating Florida State just by running the ball.

11) I'm still not sold on batting the pitcher 8th; don't think it helps much, if at all. I'll be very, very curious if anyone does it in a playoff game; Tony Larussa never did.

10) With over 1,700 entrants in the Westgate Football Handicapping Contest in Las Vegas, first place will be $906,625. They pick five games a week against the spread.

9) Yoenis Cespedes is having a glorious end to his 4-year, $36M contract; word is he wants his next contract to be six years. Very curious to see where he lands, because that six-year deal is likely to be worth more than $120M. Thats million with an M. .

8) Hanley Ramirez is getting paid $122,222 a day by the Red Sox; all he does now is take BP and practice playing first base, which is apparently where he will play next year. Putting Ramirez in the outfield was the kind of move that gets people fired.

7) One of my new hobbies is going thru EBay and pricing bobbleheads; if I played in the NBA for 10+ years and my bobblehead was only worth $5.95 or so, that would make me sad. A few guys are in that boat, some were good players.

Not sure why, but nascot bobbleheads seem to be worth more than lot of players'.

6) Johnny Cueto allowed two runs in seven IP last night in Detroit; Royals have to be encouraged by that performance, his best in almost a month.

5) If you're watching an NFL game and ref is Walt Anderson, know that his crew is the most experienced in the NFL, with a combined 102 years of NFL experience.

4) I wonder how many times an NFL team has won back-to-back games when they allowed a defensive TD in both games. Denver's win at Arrowhead was first time since 2010 that Peyton Manning threw a pick-6 in consecutive games.

3) Milwaukee Brewers drew 37,158 fans to Miller Park on a rainy Friday last night, because their stadium is domed. Minnesota's game got rained out, because for some freakin' reason, the Twins built a new stadium without a retractable dome on it.

Minnesota is a contending team that isn't helped by having to play a twinbill today; Games 6-7 of the World Series this year, in the AL park, will be November 3-4. I'm wondering what the temps will be in Minneapolis those two nights.

2) If you like good writing, go to joeposnanski.com. He is a writer from Kansas City who mostly writes about sports, but occasionally does some other stuff-- he had a good article last week about having a 14-year old daughter. When I read his stuff, I wish I had studied more (or at all.....lol) in school. He really is an excellent writer.

1) Atlanta Brave TV announcers were talking about baseball getting realigned in the near future, the way we suggested a few years ago. They implied that one of the biggest roadblocks to this would be adoption of the DH thru the whole major leagues, which is not a popular idea with the National League teams.

Geographic realignment would reduce travel costs greatly; no way the players' union would ever agree to the elimination of the DH, since DH's are generally lot higher paid than the average player.

Under wagers in hot with Conroy behind home plate

The Under has gone 7-1 in the last eight ball games that umpire Chris Conroy has worked behind home plate. Conroy is scheduled to call balls and strikes in Washington when the Nationals host the Miami Marlins Friday evening.

Season to date, Conroy has worked home plate in 25 games with the under holding the slight edge at 11-13 O/U. There has been an average of 7.92 runs scored per game when he works home plate.

Jose Fernandez and Max Scherzer are probable to start for the Marlins and Nats respectively. The total is currently pegged at 6.5.

Cards and Cubs have been hitting Overs in meetings

The Over has gone 5-0-1 in the past six meetings between the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs and the two NL Central rivals will open a three-game set at Wrigley Field Friday afternoon.

The clubs have combined to score 59 runs in those six games to average just about 10 runs per game.

Probable pitchers toeing the rubber are Lance Lynn for the Cards and Dan Haren for the Cubs.

Astros hope to regroup in Houston

ARLINGTON -- After a season-long, 11-day, 10-game road trip in which they went just 2-8, the Astros are hoping to regroup in Houston for a nine-game homestand beginning Friday.

The Astros entered the road trip against the A's, Angels and Rangers with a three-game lead in the American League West but return home 2.5 games behind the Rangers.

Fortunately for the Astros, their home record of 48-24 is the best in the AL and they have won 24 of their last 32 games and 40 of 55 at Minute Maid Park.

"We'll need to make and adjustments at home and find ways to win," manager A.J. Hinch said.

The Astros will play at home as a second-place team for the first time since July 26, when they trailed the then-division leading Angels by a game.

After the three-game series against the A's, the Astros will host the Angels and Rangers for three games each.

"We'll see (the Rangers) in a week at our place and we've got plenty of baseball left," Hinch said. "It's not a good feeling going home getting beat up like this, but these games are over. There's really nothing we can do other than learn from it, be a little more tough-minded and get home in front of our fans and play our brand of baseball that we've been accustomed to for five-plus months."

Marlins playing for pride down the stretch

WASHINGTON -- The Miami Marlins are certainly not folding the tent in the final weeks of the season.

"You are still playing for pride," said outfielder Christian Yelich, standing by his locker on Thursday at Nationals Park.

Miami entered the three-game series at Washington have won five series in a row, the latest against the first-place New York Mets as they won, 6-0, on Wednesday.

The last time the Marlins won five series in a row was at the end of the 2008 season and stretching into the start of the 2009 campaign. The Marlins kept up the winning ways on Thursday with a 6-4 win over the Nationals.

"Obviously we went through a rough patch where kind of a lot of negativity around, but lately we've been playing as a team," said first baseman Justin Bour, who hit his 18th homer Thursday. "Playing good baseball. Good pitching, good hitting. It's been, I don't want to say an easier month, but it's been a more laid back month. A happy team, and that's been great."

Yelich has a hit in 14 of his last 17 games and hit .328 in his first 18 games since coming off the 15-day disabled list on Aug. 25 after dealing with a right knee contusion.

Yelich, 23, the left-handed hitting outfielder from California, was hitting .391 in his last 18 road games heading into the series in Washington.

"We are playing hard until the end. Guys are playing for pride," Yelich said.

He hit No. 2 in the lineup Thursday and has six homers and 37 RBIs this year.

He said many players have dealt with challenges this year. "We will be better off for it. That experience is invaluable and will help us in the future," he said.
