Preview: Flyers (23-22) at Blue Jackets (23-26)

Date: February 13, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Philadelphia Flyers winger Jakub Voracek has finally become the star that the Columbus Blue Jackets envisioned he would develop into when they drafted him in the first round in 2007.

He's still searching for his first win as a visitor against his first NHL team, though he shined the last time he played at Nationwide Arena.

Voracek will be one of several former Blue Jackets on the ice for the Flyers when they try to end a five-game slide at Columbus on Friday night.

The Blue Jackets (23-26-3) made Voracek the seventh overall selection in 2007, and he was part of the franchise's first playoff appearance as a rookie in 2008-09. But he clashed with former Columbus coach Scott Arniel and was traded to the Flyers on June 23, 2011.

Playing on a line with star captain Claude Giroux, Voracek is tied for second in the NHL with 59 points - three shy of his career high set last season. He has 12 points in eight games against his former team with five in three meetings this season, though Philadelphia (23-22-9) is 0-2-1 in his visits to Nationwide Arena.

Voracek last played there in the NHL All-Star game Jan. 25, tallying six points to match an event record set by Hall of Famer Mario Lemieux in 1988.

He'll be joined on the ice by former Blue Jackets R.J. Umberger and Nick Schultz.

Umberger began his career with Philadelphia and then played for Columbus over the previous six seasons before he was dealt to the Flyers in the offseason for Scott Hartnell. Schultz played nine games for the Blue Jackets last season after he was acquired from Edmonton.

"It was a great experience here, it's a good group of guys here in Columbus," Schultz said. "They work hard, it's a really hard-working team."

One former Columbus player who won't be available is goaltender Steve Mason, who suffered a bizarre injury during a timeout in Sunday's 3-1 victory at Washington that resulted in knee surgery.

That means Ray Emery will likely get the nod. Emery has surrendered 10 goals in losing both career starts at Columbus, where the Flyers are 0-4-1 in five visits after going 2-0-0 with two ties in their first four.

The Blue Jackets will start Curtis McElhinney, who is 3-1-0 with a 3.27 goals-against average in four starts against Philadelphia.

Flyers defenseman Luke Schenn feels confident he will return after he sat out Tuesday's 2-1 overtime loss at Montreal with an upper-body injury.

"I feel pretty good and felt surprisingly pretty good waking up this morning and in practice," Schenn told the Flyers' official website. "So I should be fine and ready to go tomorrow."

The Blue Jackets failed to win their third straight Monday with a 4-3 home defeat to Los Angeles. Hartnell scored for the third straight game, and he has six points in a four-game run.

"Those one-goal games mean a lot when you lose them and you want to be on the other side of it," forward Matt Calvert told the Blue Jackets' official website. "It's tough to play desperate everyday, but we got ourselves into this hole and it's our jobs to get ourselves out of it."

These teams are among the NHL's best on the power play, with the Flyers at 23.6 percent and Blue Jackets at 22.8.

Preview: Devils (21-24) at Blackhawks (33-18)

Date: February 13, 2015 8:30 PM EDT

The Chicago Blackhawks have enjoyed the NHL's best home-ice advantage over the last five years, but that edge has evaporated.

Chicago tries to avoid a third straight home loss Friday night against the New Jersey Devils.

The Blackhawks (33-18-4) have dropped four of six, including the first two beyond regulation on a season-high eight-game homestand. They came back from a 3-1 deficit Wednesday against Vancouver with two goals in the final 2:11 to force overtime, including Marian Hossa's second of the game with 55 seconds remaining, then gave up the winner 1:20 into the extra period.

Chicago had been 9-2 past regulation, but its fortunes may be evening out.

"Whether it's desperation or urgency, we kind of came alive there at the end," defenseman Duncan Keith said. "We're a tough team to play against when we get our backs against the wall, but you never want to let it get like that."

The Blackhawks, who are a league-best 141-50-23 at home since 2009-10, are 4-4-2 at the United Center following a 12-3-1 start, however. Jonathan Toews has one goal in his last 10 home games after scoring seven in his first 16.

"We play well at home traditionally and consistently finding a way to get points is what we're all about at home," coach Joel Quenneville said. "But we have to look to take advantage starting (Friday) night."

Hossa has scored twice in three straight games for the first time in his career after scoring twice in his previous 15 games.

"It's feeling good when the puck's going in for you," Hossa said. "Just try to put a puck at the net - that's my goal right now - and good things happen. That's what I try to do."

Since joining the Blackhawks in 2009-10, Hossa has only one goal in six games against the Devils but does have five assists. He assisted on Keith's game-tying goal in a 3-2 shootout win at New Jersey on Dec. 9, Chicago's sixth victory in eight meetings.

The Devils (21-24-9) have also dropped two straight after Monday's 2-1 home loss to Edmonton, which owns the fewest wins in the NHL. They recorded exactly 14 shots for the third time in six games and rank 29th in the league with 23.9 shots per game. Chicago outshot New Jersey 39-24 in the first meeting and its plus-5.1 shots per game differential is second in the NHL, while the Devils rank 29th at minus-6.6.

"It's up to us to figure this out," said goaltender Cory Schneider, who is 4-1-1 with a 1.56 goals-against average over his last seven games. "For sure, the last two games have been a setback for us, but we have no one to blame but ourselves. No one is going to come and bail us out."

Schneider will get the start looking to improve on a 3.44 career GAA versus Chicago.

The Devils, averaging 19.8 shots in six road games since New Year's Eve, are 4-10-2 in their last 16 away from New Jersey. Adam Henrique and Jaromir Jagr are tied for second on the team with 11 goals but Jagr has one goal in his last 15 road contests while Henrique hasn't scored in his last 10.

Preview: Panthers (24-18) at Stars (25-21)

Date: February 13, 2015 8:30 PM EDT

No goaltender has faced more shots than the Dallas Stars' Kari Lehtonen.

Not far behind him in that category is new teammate Jhonas Enroth.

One of those goalies will start Friday night with the possibility open that Enroth will make his Stars debut in this home matchup with the Florida Panthers.

Dallas (25-21-8) is the NHL's second-highest scoring team with 3.15 goals per game behind Tyler Seguin, who is tied for third in the league with 29 goals and tied for second with 59 points.

The problem has been defensively. Lehtonen has faced 1,370 shots, and was forced to make 41 saves in Tuesday's 5-3 victory at Boston.

The Stars made a move to help take the load off their top goaltender Wednesday by acquiring Enroth from Buffalo in exchange for goalie Anders Lindback and a third-round 2016 pick.

Enroth faced 1,237 shots for a Sabres team that has surrendered the most in the league. His last Buffalo victory came Saturday when he beat the Stars with a 38-save effort, and he's excited about joining a team that is in the hunt for the playoffs.

"I am very excited to go to a team that actually wanted me and traded for me so it's nice to feel wanted I guess," Enroth said. "We're only a couple of points out of the playoffs here so we have a couple of real big games coming up."

Enroth previously played for coach Lindy Ruff when both were with the Sabres. Ruff is excited to be reunited with him.

"He's been in the biggest games, and we're going to have a lot of big games down the stretch," Ruff said. "I just think he is tested. I think his game has grown. He's faced a ton of rubber this year."

The Stars are entering a back-to-back set with a trip to Colorado on Saturday. Ruff said he will give Enroth the start in one of these games.

Lehtonen is 1-5-0 with a 4.12 goals-against average in his last six starts against the Panthers while Enroth is 2-1-1 with a 1.47 GAA in four career starts versus them.

Dallas will be without forward Antoine Roussel, who was suspended two games for a hit under the chin of Boston's Adam McQuaid that led to his ejection Tuesday.

Seguin missed practice due to the flu Thursday, though Ruff indicated his star will play. Veteran winger Travis Moen is likely to return from a five-game absence due to a lower-body injury.

Florida (24-18-11) comes to town without center Brandon Pirri and defenseman Willie Mitchell, both out with upper-body injuries.

The Panthers are also in need of points as they trail Boston by four in the race for the East's final playoff spot. They opened a back-to-back set with Thursday's 2-1 defeat at Minnesota in which Minneapolis native Nick Bjugstad scored their lone goal.

'Every game is important. We would have liked to have gotten it to overtime, but we didn't,' said goalie Roberto Luongo, who made 21 saves. 'We've got another one tomorrow, so the key is to put this one behind us.'

It's unclear if Luongo will start a second straight night or give way to backup Al Montoya.

Florida has captured the last three meetings.

Preview: Sharks (28-20) at Coyotes (20-28)

Date: February 13, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

The San Jose Sharks realize they aren't going to keep every puck out of the net, but the fact that they've surrendered goals so easily and frequently during their latest slide is troubling.

Clinging to a guaranteed playoff spot in the Pacific Division, the Sharks look to avoid a season high-tying fourth consecutive defeat when they visit the Arizona Coyotes on Friday night.

San Jose (28-20-8) has produced at least four goals four times while totaling 19 in its last six, but it's gone 1-3-2 in that stretch, giving up five goals three times and 14 during the three-game skid.

Joe Thornton sent Wednesday's matchup with Washington into overtime with a goal late in the third, but the Capitals scored in the extra period for a 5-4 win.

Brent Burns scored twice and Logan Couture added a goal and an assist for the Sharks, whose 36 non-shootout goals allowed in 11 games since Jan. 17 are among the most in the NHL.

"Seems like every game the other team is scoring some pretty easy goals," Couture said. "We're not making it tough. It's on the defense, it's on the forward playing low to be harder around our net. (Antti Niemi is) making the first save and they're scoring on the (rebound). We've got to be getting sticks and being a lot stronger around our own net."

San Jose is in playoff position in the Pacific, but it's also played more games than any of the postseason contenders in the division.

Niemi has started both meetings with the Coyotes this season, losing 4-3 in a shootout Nov. 22 and earning a 3-2 victory Jan. 13. He's 7-0-3 with a 1.73 goals-against average in his last 10 starts against Arizona, which also is looking to end a slump.

The Coyotes (20-28-7) have dropped three of four after falling 2-1 to St. Louis on Tuesday. Mike Smith had another solid effort with 34 saves and has given up two or fewer goals in six of his past seven starts, showing signs of returning to form in a season in which his 3.22 GAA and .897 save percentage are the worst of his career.

"Physically, he's our best athlete," general manager Don Maloney said in a radio interview. "He's big. He's mobile. When Mike is on a high he's as good as anybody in the league."

Smith has gone 7-1-2 with a 1.46 GAA in the last 10 matchups with the Sharks, including both meetings this season.

The Coyotes claimed forward Marco Arcobello off waivers from Pittsburgh on Wednesday to help overcome the loss of center Martin Hanzal, who has missed the last seven and will have back surgery that likely will end his season.

Arcobello, who has eight goals and seven assists in 50 games while also playing with Edmonton and Nashville, will be the third player in history to suit up for four different teams in one season. He'll switch back to the middle after playing on the wing with the Penguins.

"I'm really comfortable playing center," Arcobello told the team's official website. "I try to be a responsible two-way player that can chip in offensively at times."

The Sharks have won three straight meetings in Arizona.

Preview: Bruins (28-19) at Canucks (30-20)

Date: February 13, 2015 10:00 PM EDT

Coming off back-to-back defeats, the Boston Bruins are hoping to step up their play on what they're expecting to be a grueling five-game road trip that begins Friday night against the Vancouver Canucks.

Boston (28-19-7) will also visit Calgary, Edmonton, St. Louis and Chicago, with all but the Western Conference-worst Oilers sitting in playoff contention. The Bruins, who are 4-1-1 in their last six away from home, are clinging to the East's second wild-card spot.

"This road trip - people talk about bonding and this and that, but I think right now, it's more about, let's go out there and do our jobs, game in, game out," coach Claude Julien told the team's official website. "It's Vancouver that we need to be focused on right now - not Calgary, not Edmonton, or St. Louis, Chicago.

"Let's focus on really what we have to do, here, because if we can get ourselves a good start, it will make a big difference."

The Bruins had won eight of 10 before managing eight goals during a 1-3-0 stretch. They fell 3-1 to Montreal on Sunday before closing a three-game homestand with Tuesday's 5-3 loss to Dallas.

"Sometimes, a change of scenery is good," said forward Milan Lucic, who has seven points in the last seven games. "We've been a pretty good home team, other than the last two games, but it's always exciting to head out West and have a change of scenery."

The Bruins have dropped two of three to the Canucks since beating them in seven games in the 2011 Stanley Cup Final. Boston took the last matchup 3-1 on Feb. 4, 2014, behind a goal and an assist from Lucic.

"To me, if we can get that intensity and that commitment carrying into our games, we're going to be OK," Julien said. "We've hit a bump here, and I don't want it to be any longer than it already has been, so we need to up our intensity and our commitment and go out there and know it's going to be a tough battle."

The Canucks (30-20-3) return home in high spirits after pulling out a 5-4 overtime win over Chicago on Wednesday. Vancouver blew a two-goal lead over the final 2:11 in regulation before Henrik Sedin assisted on brother Daniel's goal 1:20 into OT.

"The twins made the magic happen once again and that was a big goal for them," fellow forward Alexandre Burrows said.

Daniel Sedin finished with two goals, giving him four to go with three assists over the last seven games. Henrik Sedin has eight assists during that stretch.

Eddie Lack stopped 37 shots against the Blackhawks, but the Canucks could turn back to the struggling Ryan Miller. Miller has a 3.31 goals-against average in dropping five of seven starts, and he's allowed five goals in two of his last three with a 31-save shutout against Pittsburgh in between.

Miller went 26-9-7 with a 2.56 GAA against the Bruins while with Buffalo, tied for his second-most wins against any opponent.

Tuukka Rask made 27 saves against the Canucks last February for his first win in three career meetings. He's 4-1-2 with a 1.67 GAA in seven road starts in 2015.

Daniel and Henrik Sedin have been limited to 12 and eight points in 21 games apiece against Boston, including the postseason.

Leafs winless on the road in 2015

The Toronto Maple Leafs' descension into the bottom of the Eastern Conference has been well documented this season, but their struggles on the road since are reaching even uglier levels.

Since the beginning of 2015, the Leafs are 0-12 away from the Air Canada Center. During that span, they've allowed 65 goals while finding the twine just 13 times.

Toronto will be away from home once again Saturday evening when they travel to Montreal for a date with the arch rival Canadiens. The Habs are currently healthy -225 moneyline faves for the affair.

Enroth expected to make Stars debut vs. Panthers

It appears the Dallas Stars will get their first look at newly-acquired netminder Jhonas Enroth Saturday versus the Florida Panthers.

Enroth, who came to Dallas in a trade with Buffalo earlier this week, went 13-21-2 with a .903 save percentage and 3.27 GAA in 37 appearances for the cellar-dwelling Buffalo Sabres this season.

At the time of writing, the line for the game was off the board.

Game of the Day: Penguins at Blackhawks
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pittsburgh Penguins at Chicago Blackhawks (-144, 5.5)

Marian Hossa has been an integral part of the Chicago Blackhawks' success of late, scoring a staggering seven times over the last four games. The 36-year-old looks to continue his torrid stretch as the Blackhawks play the fourth contest of their season-high eight-game homestand against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday afternoon. Hossa scored a goal and set up captain Jonathan Toews for the eventual game-winning tally in a 3-1 triumph over New Jersey on Friday and also collected a goal and an assist in Chicago's 3-2 shootout win against Pittsburgh on Jan. 21.

"On fire," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said of Hossa. "He's got it going. He's got that touch." While Chicago is riding a five-game point streak (3-0-2), Pittsburgh posted its second straight win and fourth in five outings with a 5-4 shootout victory over Ottawa on Thursday. Captain Sidney Crosby tallied twice while playing in his 600th career contest, but was held off the scoresheet in the first meeting against the Blackhawks.

TV: 12:30 p.m. ET, NBC, TVA, City

LINE HISTORY: The opening line had a total of 5.5, with a moneyline of Chicago -144.

INJURY REPORT: Penguins - D Christian Erhoff (Ques-Concussion), RW Steve Downie (Ques-Undisclosed) Blackhawks - D Michal Rozsival (Ques-Shoulder), D Tim Erixon (Ques-Lower Body)

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (32-15-8 SU, 21-31-3 O/U): Evgeni Malkin scored for the second time in five games since returning from a lower-body injury and has six points (two goals, four assists) in five career meetings with Chicago. Perhaps the former Hart Trophy winner could ignite an ailing power play, which is 0-for-13 in February and failed to score on two opportunities in the first meeting with the Blackhawks. Marc-Andre Fleury has helped mask some of those problems with sterling play, following up back-to-back shutouts by stopping 23-of-24 shots in a 4-1 victory over Detroit on Wednesday.

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (34-18-4 SU, 20-29-7 O/U): Patrick Kane has recorded a team-high 27 goals this season and 205 in his career, but not one has come at the expense of Pittsburgh. The 2013 Conn Smythe Trophy winner was held off the scoresheet in the first meeting with the Penguins this season and has notched just four assists in six career encounters. Kane enters Sunday's contest on a high, collecting two goals and five assists over his last five games.

TRENDS:

*Penguins are 6-2 in their last 8 vs. Central.
*Blackhawks are 2-7 in their last 9 games following a win.
*Under is 6-1-1 in Penguins last 8 overall.
*Over is 5-0 in Blackhawks last 5 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.

CONSENSUS: 73.53 percent of users are backing the Blackhawks, with the total split nearly 50/50.

Ducks' PF Ryan Getzlaf, probable Sunday

Getzlaf is expected to play Sunday against the Capitals despite an upper-body injury.

Favorites a strong play Saturday night

Wagering on favorites in the NHL Saturday night was a good bet, as they went a very impressive 9-0-0-1 straight up.

The Winnipeg Jets were the only underdog to buck the trend, pulling out a 5-4 shootout win over the Detroit Red Wings.

The big night has favorites at 516-217-37-54 (62.62 percent) for the season.

There are five games on the NHL slate for Sunday, with Chicago, St. Louis, Philadelphia, Anaheim and San Jose favored in their matchups.

Habs continue to be a strong under play

The Montreal Canadiens went under another total Saturday night, topping the Toronto Maple Leafs 2-1 in a shootout.

The Habs have been a great under play of late going 3-10-2 over/under in their last 15 games, giving up just 2.00 goals against a game during that run. The run has put the Canadiens at 16-29-10 O/U this season, making them second best under team in the league.

Montreal next visits Detroit on Monday, where the Red Wings are 6-4 O/U in their last 10 games.

NHL roundup: Habs edge Leafs in shootout

MONTREAL -- Center David Desharnais scored the shootout winner to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night at the Bell Centre.

Center Daniel Winnik replied for Toronto, which has just two wins in 19 games in 2015.

Jets 5, Red Wings 4 (SO)

DETROIT -- Right winger Drew Staffer scored the only goal of an eight-shooter shootout to give Winnipeg a win against Detroit at Joe Louis Arena.

Islanders 6, Blue Jackets 3

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- A three-goal third period outburst helped the New York Islanders pull away from Columbus Blue Jackets at Nassau Coliseum.

Center John Tavares scored two goals in a span of a little more than four minutes to cap the outburst, while center Frans Nielsen snapped a 3-3 tie 1:54 into the third period before Tavares' goals iced the victory for the Islanders. Center Josh Bailey scored twice in the first period -- Tavares assisted on both goals -- while center Ryan Strome scored in the second period for the Islanders.

Center Brandon Dubinsky, right winger Cam Atkinson and left winger Nick Foligno scored for the Blue Jackets, who lost six of 10. Goalie Anton Forsberg, who was seeking his first NHL win, recorded 40 saves.

Senators 7, Oilers 2

OTTAWA -- A four-goal outburst in the second period propelled Ottawa past Edmonton at Canadian Tire Centre.

Winger Milan Michalek led the way with two goals and an assist for his second multi-point game of the season. Other Ottawa goals were scored by wingers Mike Hoffman and Alex Chiasson, defenseman Cody Ceci and centers Kyle Turris and David Legwand.

Coyotes center Antoine Vermette scored his team's lone goal.

Wild 6, Hurricanes 3

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Right winger Thomas Vanek had his first multi-goal game for Minnesota, scoring twice to lead his team over Carolina.

Center Jordan Schroeder, defenseman Nate Prosser and center Erik Haula also scored for Minnesota and left wing Zach Parise added an empty-netter. Goaltender Devan Dubnyk made 24 saves.

Carolina got goals from center Andrej Nestrasil, left winger Jeff Skinner and center Elias Lindholm. Making his first start against the team that drafted him in 2004, goaltender Anton Khudobin made 18 saves.

Predators 3, Devils 1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- A late third-period flurry enabled Nashville to extend its latest winning streak by topping New Jersey.

Centers Colin Wilson and Craig Smith scored 66 seconds apart in the last 3 1/2 minutes as Nashville improved to 24-3-1 in Bridgestone Arena. Center Matt Cullen opened the scoring in the first for the Predators, who got 21 saves from goalie Pekka Rinne.

Kings 3, Capitals 1

LOS ANGELES -- Third-period goals by centers Trevor Lewis and Jarret Stoll were the difference as Los Angeles defeated Washington before a sellout crowd 18,230 at Staples Center.

Goaltender Jonathan Quick stopped 27 of 28 shots, and the Kings (25-18-12) captured their fourth in a row. The win also allowed Kings coach Darryl Sutter to pass Larry Robinson for fourth on the club's all-time win list with 123.

Capitals netminder Braden Holtby finished with 27 saves. Washington (29-17-10) lost for just the second time in six contests.

Kings left winger Dwight King and Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin also scored in the game.

Flames 3, Canucks 2

CALGARY, Alberta -- Karri Ramo stood tall to backstop Calgary to a victory over Vancouver at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Ramo, whose last start was on Jan. 7 but only lasted half a game due to an injury, surrendered a stinker of an early goal but finished with 28 saves in a victory that keeps the Flames in a wild-card spot while the Western Conference standings have become suffocatingly close. Flames center Sean Monahan scored twice and left winger Lance Bouma once in the game.

Rookie left winger Ronalds Kenins and right winger Linden Vey scored for Vancouver.

-- Stephen Curry won the 3-point contest, making 13 in row at one point. Craig Hodges still holds that record, once making 19 3-pointers in a row.

-- To get in golf's Hall of Fame, you need to win 15+ tournament or 2+ majors.

-- Steve Lavin at St John's: 18-22 in January, 22-13 in February.

-- Odd that WCC hoop games get blacked out on DirecTV, but I can watch them for free on my laptop. Makes no sense.

-- Mississippi State's team plane made an amergency landing on its way home to Starkville Saturday night, second time in a week that happened on a plane leaving the Columbia, MO airport. Plane landed safely, everyone is shaken but OK.

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college basketball Saturday

13) Big West-- Cal-Davis leads by two games after Riverside upset Irvine. Long Beach was 0-2 this week; they look disinterested a lot at start of games. UCSB had 2-0 week, but they'll need star Williams (shoulder) in lineup to make noise in tournament.

12) Mountain West-- Down year here; San Diego State is 10-3 and leads league. New Mexico blew game at Nevada, bad sign for team that will be looking for their 4th MW tourney title in a row. UNLV lost star freshman Vaughn; they're screwed. Colorado State is now on bubble. This could be a one-bid league.

11) Mid-American-- Bowling Green is 9-3 with new coach Jans, after being 13-21 the last two years; Ball State (2-10) is only team that doesn't have 4+ MAC wins. Going to be lot of fun to watch MAC tourney. Kent needs Jimmy Hall to bunce back from having mono- they beat Toledo without him Friday.

10) Missouri Valley-- There's still Wichita and everyone else, but gap has narrowed this year. Northern Iowa is 12-1 in league, but Panthers haven't won an Arch Madness game since 2010. Anything other than a Wichita-UNI tourney final would be a shock. Wichita won tough game at Illinois State yesterday by 6.

9) AAC-- SMU-Tulsa-Temple in three way battle for top spot. Cincinnati lost home game to Tulane yesterday; game was 19-13 at half. UConn/Memphis are NIT teams. Kid at SMU hit a half-court shot on Game Day yesterday, won $18,000, second time in three weeks a kid nailed a halfcourt shot on national TV.

8) Atlantic 14-- Four teams are tied at top (9-3); VCU got injured star Graham back yesterday, won at fading GW. Nine of 14 teams in league are 6-6 or better, as bottom four teams have been pummeled (combined 9-38). There is so much parity this year in college ball; not many really good teams, ton of fragile teams.

7) WCC-- Gonzaga is like UNLV was in the Big West 25 years ago, dominating their league but uplifting other WCC programs like Pepperdine, Portland who have gotten better but not good enough to beat the Zags. St Mary's manages to stay #2, Alydar to Gonzaga's Affirmed.

6) Pac-12-- Arizona is much the best, but they're tied at top with Utah, which didn't play well in losses in Tucson/Westwood. UCLA is tough at home, soft on road. Cal is on the rise, winning five games in row after a dismal start. Washington fell off the cliff after throwing big man Robert Upshaw off the team.

5) SEC-- Kentucky is unbeaten but has been challenged. Arkansas/Ole Miss/LSU are next three best teams, everyone else is erratic as hell or just plain bad. Man, Florida is 12-13, 5-7 in SEC, terrible year for Gators-- five of their last seven games were decided by 1 or 2 points.

4) Big 14-- Wisconsin lost PG Jackson in loss at Rutgers, but is 7-0 since; they've got depth. Again, not lot of great teams here-- home teams are 58-27 SU, making it the #1 conference in America for home teams. Maryland is surprising 9-4 in its first year in conference; they won last two games by total of five points.

Denzel Valentine's shot with 0:02 left won game for Michigan State Saturday on Feb 14, otherwise known as.....Valentine's Day.

3) ACC-- NC State might be the best 15-11 team in the history of the world; they've beaten Duke/Louisville, lost to Wofford/Wake Forest. Erratic, typical of this season's quality of play. Virginia lost its best player Anderson; doubtful he'll be back for first weekend of NCAAs. Miami has slipped since its win at Syracuse.

2) Big East-- Villanova-Butler game last night was excellent ball; Bulldogs are back to where they were when they dominated Horizon League. Seton Hall has some internal problems, when a starting guard transfers in February, then the coach praises him up and down on his way out the door. Everyone else is typically erratic.

1) Big 12-- Kansas is going to win this league for 11th year in row, but Jayhawks did not win conference tourney two of last three years (they've won tourney in six of last nine years). Why is West Virginia in this league? Their shortest road trip is Iowa State; that has to take its toll over the course of a season.

Armadillo: Monday's six-pack

Six of the top minor league prospects of the Chicago White Sox........

1) Carlos Rodon, P-- Led NC State to the 2013 College World Series.

2) Tim Anderson, SS-- Will eventually replace Alexei Ramirez in Chicago

4) Micah Johnson, 2B-- .296 hitter in 306 minor league games.

10) Jacob May, OF-- Grandson of Lee May, powerful hitter in the 70's.

18) Trayce Thompson, OF-- Klay Thompson's brother.

25) James Dykstra, P-- Has older brother who is big prospect in San Diego

**********

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Random thoughts on a frigid night.......

13) Its so cold out the icicles hanging off my house put parkas on; wind chill as I type this is a chilly minus-26. Spring training starts in three days, so it'll be fun to watch exhibition baseball games, as long as the satellite dish doesn't freeze. Oy.

12) Wall Street Journal posted that an average NBA regular season game has 7.4 dunks in it; the average All-Star game has 34.2 dunks, which is why I don't watch it. I like to watch guys compete; thats not what an All-Star Game is. Would rather watch a bad college game than the All-Star Game; those guys are competing, at least.

11) Indiana 90, Minnesota 71-- Hoosiers made 18-32 from the arc; impressive.

10) Northwestern 66, Iowa 61-- Horrific loss for the Hawkeyes, losing to a team that had lost its previous ten games; TV people kept showing Doug Collins in the stands, agonizing with his son's team as they struggled. Good TV.

9) Miami-Boston College game was postponed by weather, will be played at 3:00 this afternoon, televised on ESPNU. Hurricanes have been struggling lately.

8) Hofstra 81, Drexel 57-- Dragons won five of last seven games, with both losses by big scores to Hofstra, which has struggled recently otherwise.

7) Quote of the Day, part 2, from Kevin Durant:
“You guys (reporters) really don't know shit. To be honest, man, I'm only here talking to y'all because I have to,. So I really don't care. Y'all not my friends. You're going to write what you want to write. You're going to love us one day and hate us the next. That's a part of it. So I just learn how to deal with y'all.”.

6) Toronto's Kyle Lowry had a dunk in the All-Star Game; he was the only All-Star who hadn't dunked a ball this season.

5) UNLV is a disappointing 5-7 in the Mountain West and now Rashad Vaughn is done with a knee injury; their seven losses are by a total of 26 points. Tough year for the Rebels, but if Vaughn is healthy next year, they'll be back in NCAAs.

4) Penn State hoop coach Patrick Chambers flipped out this weekend over a lack of respect he feels his team gets from refs, because they're not a winning team like his rivals are. Its one of the many obstacles that comes with turning a perennial loser into a winner; once they start winning, Penn State will get more respect. Just the way it is.

3) NFL ref Gene Steratore also works bigtime college hoop games; he had the game at Michigan State Satuirday, one at Wisconsin yesterday. Lot of money in officiating, once you get to that lofty level. He has worked 41 hoop games this year, in addition to his NFL duties.

2) Then there is referee David Hall, who shows up on my TV almost every night. Hall has worked 78 games in 94 days. Not a bad second job.

1) You should follow former Dallas Cowboy executive Gil Brandt on Twitter; he is sharp and gives good tidbits, such as the first NBA All-Star Game was back in 1952 in Boston, and the preliminary was a high school game. That sounds better than all the hoopla you see now, more style than substance.

NHL roundup: Blackhawks edge Pens in shootout

CHICAGO -- Right winger Patrick Sharp scored the tiebreaking goal in the shootout to lift the Chicago Blackhawks to a 2-1 shootout win against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday afternoon.
