Thursday's Big 12 Tips

March 13, 2014

**Kansas State vs. Iowa State**

-- As of early this morning, most books had Iowa State (23-7 straight up, 13-15 against the spread) installed as a three-point favorite.

-- Iowa State avoided arriving at the Big 12 Tournament on a three-game losing streak by capturing a huge home win over Oklahoma State in its regular-season finale. Trailing by three in the closing seconds, Naz Long buried a buzzer-beating 3-ball to force overtime. In the extra session, DeAndre Kane scored seven of his 27 points. Kane finished with eight assists, seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Georges Niang scored 22 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out three assists and blocked a pair of shots. Long added 14 points on 3-of-5 shooting from deep, while Melvin Ejim added 12 points and eight boards.

-- Bettors will enjoy watching the low-post matchup between Ejim and Kansas State center Thomas Gipson. Both big men pack plenty of muscle and have the ability to get the other in foul trouble, which could play a big role in who advances. Ejim averages 18.2 points and 8.6 rebounds per game for the Cyclones. Kane is one of the nation's premier guards, averaging 17.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game.

-- Kansas State (20-11 SU, 16-12-1 ATS) has lost back-to-back games going into the Big 12 Tournament, including a 76-74 home loss to Baylor in its regular-season finale. The Wildcats blew a 33-25 halftime advantage and eventually lost to the Bears in overtime as 3.5-point favorites. Marcus Foster scored 29 points thanks to 7-of-11 shooting from 3-point range. Gipson finished with 16 points and seven rebounds, while Nino Williams added 15 points and 10 boards.

-- These teams split a pair of regular-season meetings with both teams winning at home. I backed Kansas State in both spots and the Wildcats hooked me up with winners in both situations. The first meeting in Ames was on January 25 when Iowa State captured an 81-75 win, yet it failed to cover as a 9.5-point home 'chalk.' Ejim led the way for the Cyclones with 20 points, nine rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots. Niang scored 18 points on 4-of-6 shooting from deep. Will Spradling hit four consecutive 3-pointers to spark a K-State comeback that led to the backdoor spread cover. Foster had 20 points in the losing effort.

-- In the second game in Manhattan, Kansas State won an 80-73 decision as a two-point home favorite. Shane Southwell led five K-State players in double figures with 13 points. Gipson finished with 12 points, eight boards and two blocked shots. Ejim scored a game-high 30 points and pulled down 16 points for Iowa State Kane produced 24 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

-- Kansas State has covered the number in three straight head-to-head meetings with Iowa State, but the Cyclones are 7-3 ATS in the last 10 contests in this rivalry.

-- The 'over' has hit in four straight head-to-head meetings between these Big 12 rivals. Going back further, the 'over' is 8-2 in the last 10 ISU-KSU encounters.

-- The 'over' is 15-12 overall for Iowa State, while the 'under' is 17-11-1 overall for the Wildcats.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

**Texas vs. West Virginia**

-- As of early this morning, most spots had Texas (22-9 SU, 13-15 ATS) favored by 2.5 or three points.

-- West Virginia (17-14 SU, 14-14 ATS) finished the regular season in grand style, celebrating Senior Day with a 92-86 win over Kansas as a five-point home underdog. Juwan Staten, one of the most underrated players in America, was the catalyst with 24 points, nine assists and five rebounds. Many of Staten's helpers were dished out to Eron Harris, who erupted for a team-high 28 points.

-- Rick Barnes's team has lost four of its last six games and is mired in a 1-5 ATS slump. The Longhorns lost their regular-season finale by a 59-53 score at Texas Tech. They lost outright as 1.5-point road 'chalk.' Martez Walker had a team-best 13 points in defeat.

-- WVU has been an underdog 13 times this season, going 5-8 ATS with three outright wins.

-- Texas owns a 5-6 spread record in 11 games as a single-digit favorite this year.

-- Texas cruised to a pair of comfortable wins over West Va. by double-digit margins during the regular season. In Morgantown on January 13, the Longhorns beat the Mountaineers 80-69 as 5.5-point road underdogs. Javan Felix scored a team-best 19 points for the winners. Staten scored a game-high 23 points in the losing effort.

-- Texas thumped WVU by an 88-71 count as a six-point home 'chalk' in the second encounter on Feb. 15. Felix took team-high scoring honors again with 18 points, while Cameron Ridley pitched in with 17 points and six rebounds. Bob Huggins's squad was led by Harris's game-high 21 points.

-- Staten averages 18.4 points, 5.9 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game.

-- The 'over' is 16-11 overall for WVU, but the 'under' is 3-1 in its last four games.

-- The 'under' is on a 4-0-1 run in the last five games for Texas to improve to 14-13-1 overall.

-- This game will tip 30 minutes after the conclusion of Oklahoma-Baylor at around 9:30 p.m. Eastern. The telecast will be a part of ESPN Game Plan on channel 722 (on DirecTV).

Thursday's Big Ten Notes

March 12, 2014

The Big Ten men’s college basketball tournament gets underway this Thursday from Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indiana. The bracket is set-up so the opening round of the tournament will feature four matchups between seeds five through 12 starting with No. 9 Illinois facing off against No. 8 Indiana followed by No. 12 Purdue taking on No. 5 Ohio State in the two afternoon games.

No. 9 Illinois Fighting Illini vs. No. 8 Indiana Hoosiers (Big Ten Network, 12 p.m.)

Illinois has been opened as a +5000 moderate longshot to win this year’s tournament and while it finished conference play with a straight-up record of 7-11, it did close things out with a 4-1 SU run that included a couple of stunning road victories.

On March 1, it pulled-off a 53-46 upset of Michigan State as a 13-point underdog followed by a 66-63 shocker against Iowa in its season finale as a 11 ½-point underdog. The Fighting Illini also went 4-1 against the spread down the stretch and the total stayed UNDER in seven of its last eight games.

Illinois will need all the help it can get after averaging just 65 points per game while shooting 40.8 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from 3-point range. Rayvonte Rice led the way with 15.7 points and Tracy Abrams is the only other player scoring in double figures with 10.5 PPG.

The Hoosiers also went 7-11 SU in conference play but they ended the season with back-to-back losses to Nebraska and Michigan. They failed to cover as six-point home favorites in a 10-point loss to the Cornhuskers, but they hung tough against the Spartans in a four-point loss as 9 ½-point underdogs on the road. Indiana did cover in four of its last six games and the total went OVER in three of its last four outings.

Indiana has slightly better odds to make a run at winning it all at +2000, but it has little margin for error to even think past Thursday’s game. It definitely has the edge on offense with an average of 72.8 PPG and it scored 93 points in a Feb. 27 win over Iowa as well as 80 points in last Saturday’s loss to Michigan.

Yogi Ferrell scored 16 points in that season finale which was just below a team-high season average of 17.4 points and Will Sheehey dumped in 17 points which was well above his season average of 11.4 PPG. Overall, the Hoosiers have averaged 77.3 points in their last four contests.

These two split the regular season series 1-1 to keep things an even 4-4 SU over the past eight meetings. Indiana holds a 5-2-1 edge ATS during this same stretch of games and the total has been evenly split 4-4 as well. The Hoosiers have been opened as slight two-point favorites to break the current series tie.

No. 12 Purdue Boilermakers vs. No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes (Big Ten Network, 2:25 p.m.)

Purdue started off play in the Big Ten this season with a 78-69 loss to then-No. 3 Ohio State as a six-point home underdog. Considering the Boilermakers have been opened as 8.5-point underdogs for Thursday’s matchup there is a good chance they will end their 2014 Big Ten campaign the same way they started it. In between, they only won five conference games SU against 13 losses and their conference record ATS was 7-10-1.

Purdue brings a SU six-game losing streak into Thursday’s contest but it did cover in three of its last four outings with the total going OVER all four times. It is no surprise that as the No. 12 seed in this tournament its odds to win this week are listed as +20000, but it does not have the longest odds on the board. That dubious distinction goes to Northwestern at +50000.

Just to have a chance to advance past the first round, the Boilermakers will need to drastically improve upon their 42.7 shooting percentage from the field. They are averaging 72.6 PPG, but they are also allowing an average of 71.9 points on the other end of the court. The brother duo of Ronnie and Terone Johnson have combined to score 22.8 PPG while adding 7.4 rebounds and 6.1 assists.

Ohio State’s sudden and swift fall from grace in the Big Ten started shortly after that December 31 win over Purdue with a 2-5 SU slide in the month of January. The Buckeyes were able to return to form with a mid-season 6-1 SU run, but they went on to lose two of three down the stretch. The net result of this roller-coaster ride was a 10-8 SU record in the Big Ten and a 9-9 record ATS.

Despite all this inconsistency on the court, Ohio State remains a +400 favorite to win the Big Ten Tournament which is an oddsmaker’s testament to the actual talent on this team. The Buckeyes are averaging 70 PPG and shooting 45.1 percent from the field, but if LaQuinton Ross and Lenzelle Smith Jr. can get hot shooting the ball this team could make a run.

Ross leads the team with 14.8 points. He is shooting 44.9 percent from the field and 39 percent from 3-point range. Smith is adding 11.7 points while hitting 43.9 percent of his attempts from the floor and 35 percent from beyond the arc.

The second time these two met this season it was more of the same thing with Ohio State cruising to a 67-49 victory as an 11-point home favorite. The Buckeyes have now won the last five meetings SU and they have covered in the last four. The total stayed UNDER the 132.5-point closing line in that second game after going OVER in the previous six meetings.

Late Games

No. 10 Penn State Nittany Lions vs. No. 7 Minnesota Golden Gophers (ESPN2, 6:30)

These two met twice this season with Minnesota winning both contests SU and ATS. It has now gone 7-2 SU in the last nine meetings with slight 5-3-1 edge ATS. The total went OVER the 137-point closing line in the Golden Gophers 81-63 romp over the Lions this past Sunday as seven-point home favorites. This was after it stayed UNDER in a tight 68-65 victory against Penn State on January 8 as 1 ½-point road favorites. Minnesota has been opened as a 4 ½-point favorite this time around.

No. 11 Northwestern Wildcats vs. No. 6 Iowa Hawkeyes (ESPN2, 8:30 p.m.)

Both games in this season’s series were played in January with the Hawkeyes rolling to lopsided victories by an identical margin of 26 points. They hung 93 points on the Wildcats the first time they met as 18-point home favorites and then shut them down in a 76-50 rout as 9 ½-point road favorites later that month. Iowa’s current winning streak both SU and ATS in this matchup is now five games. The total has gone 2-2-1 during this run. The current betting line for Thursday night’s game has Iowa favored by 12 points.

Big Ten tournament betting preview: Beware the Wolverines
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Michigan Wolverines have the momentum heading into what should be an entertaining Big Ten tournament - but will they be able to ride their hot shooting to their first conference championship since 1998?

Here’s a quick breakdown of the teams to watch in the Big Ten tournament at Bankers LIfe Fieldhouse at Indianapolis this week:

Favorites

Michigan Wolverines (7-2)
- The Wolverines caught fire at the right time, reeling off five consecutive victories - including a satisfying 79-70 triumph over rival Michigan State - to end the regular season. Michigan enters the tournament as the top seed thanks to a 48-percent success rate from the field that ranks it in the top 25 nationally. Nik Stauskas leads a potent offensive attack with 17.4 points per game.

Wisconsin Badgers (4-1) - Michigan's last loss came at the hands of the pesky Badgers, who dominated from start to finish and represent Michigan's biggest challenge to the conference championship. Second-seeded Wisconsin reeled off victories over each of the tournament's top-four seeds over the final month of the regular season, and won eight straight overall before dropping its season finale to Nebraska.

Live Underdog

Indiana Hoosiers (25-1)
- The Big Ten's Big Four would be delighted to avoid an encounter with the Hoosiers at any point during the tournament. Indiana may enter as the eighth seed, but has victories over Michigan, Wisconsin and Iowa this season and dropped a narrow 84-80 decision at Ann Arbor to close out the season. Add in a March 2 victory over Oklahoma State, and the Hoosiers represent the best chance at an upset.

Best ATS team

Nebraska Cornhusers (15-1)
- The fourth-seeded Cornhuskers (19-10 ATS) bounced back nicely from a 14-19 showing a season ago, going 19-11 thanks to a 15-1 mark at home. Nebraska had its strongest stretch of the season from Jan. 9 to Feb. 23, going 11-1 ATS with its only loss in that span a 79-50 thumping at the hands of the Wolverines. The Huskers finished the year with covers against Indiana and Wisconsin.

Best Over/Under

Iowa Hawkeyes (9-2)
- Points were in ample supply for the Hawkeyes (20-8), who rewarded bettors in February with one of the most dominant Over stretches of the season. The Hawkeyes went over the total in nine straight games, scoring more than 70 points eight times during that stretch while settling for 69 in the other. Of course, the defense took a pounding, as well; Iowa surrendered more 70 or more points eight times in that same span.

Big Ten Tournament betting cheat sheet: Round 1
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Illinois Fighting Illini vs. Indiana Hoosiers (-2)

Illinois lost in eight in a row and 10 of 11 during a slide that dropped it to the bottom of the conference. The ninth-seeded Illini rebounded with four victories in their final five games, including wins at Michigan State and Iowa.

The eighth-seeded Hoosiers ended their regular season with a four-point loss to the Wolverines on Saturday and have dropped two straight, but were playing some of their best basketball prior to that after enduring their own midseason swoon. Indiana should have Big Ten Freshman of the Year Noah Vonleh back near full strength after he was limited in the season finale following a two-game absence due to a foot injury.

TRENDS:

* Under is 12-5-1 in the last 18 meetings.
* Fighting Illini are 2-6-1 ATS in the last nine meetings.
* Fighting Illini are 5-0-1 ATS in their last six neutral site games.
* Hoosiers are 9-20-2 ATS in their last 31 neutral site games.

Purdue Boilermakers vs. Ohio State Buckeyes (-8.5)

The Boilermakers didn’t catch much of a break over their final six games, playing five of the teams that finished among the top six of the conference while also losing key contributors in Sterling Carter to a torn ACL and Jay Simpson to a career-ending heart condition.

The fifth-seeded Buckeyes claimed their third tournament championship over the last four seasons last March and have won 18 of their last 22 games at the event. Overall, Ohio State has four tourney titles and made the final game seven times in 10 seasons under coach Thad Matta.

TRENDS:

* Favorite is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Over is 6-1 in the last seven meetings.
* Boilermakers are 1-7 ATS in their last eight neutral site games.
* Buckeyes are 2-6 ATS in their last eight games following a ATS loss.

Penn State Nittany Lions vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers (-4.5)

The tenth-seeded Nittany Lions finished 6-12 in league action to match their conference win total from their first two seasons under coach Patrick Chambers and proved they have the ability to pull an upset or two by sweeping Ohio State. Penn State is 12-44 – including 0-2 in the conference tournament – against league foes since Chambers took over prior to the start of the 2011-12 season.

The sixth-seeded Golden Gophers sport the nation’s seventh-best strength of schedule, but figure to be squarely on the bubble thanks to their uneven play once conference play started. Minnesota helped its cause with Sunday’s 81-63 victory over the Nittany Lions for its second win in three games.

TRENDS:

* Over is 16-4 in the last 20 meetings.
* Favorite is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Golden Gophers are 0-4 ATS in their last four neutral site games.
* Over is 5-1 in Nittany Lions last six neutral site games.

Northwestern Wildcats vs. Iowa Hawkeyes (-12)

Since Wildcats' second-leading scorer JerShon Cobb was lost for the season four games ago with a foot injury, Alex Olah has emerged as the clear second option behind Drew Crawford. The sophomore center has averaged 16.3 points and shot 61.5 percent over that time, a dramatic increase from 8.1 points per game and 48 percent over his first 27 contests.

The sixth-seeded Hawkeyes appeared to be a lock for the NCAA Tournament in mid-February, but losses in five of their final six contests have made the Big Dance much less of a certainty. Iowa enjoyed a plus-18.5 rebounding margin over Northwestern in their two meetings this season.

TRENDS:

* Favorite is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.
* Over is 7-3-1 in the last 11 meetings.
* Wildcats are 0-8 ATS in their last eight Thursday games.
* Hawkeyes are 0-6 ATS in their last six vs. Big Ten.

ACC Tournament betting cheat sheet: Round 2
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida State Seminoles vs. Maryland Terrapins (-1)

Ninth seed Florida State comes in with four victories in its last six games, but dropped a 74-58 decision to Syracuse on Sunday. Aaron Thomas leads a balanced offense at 14.1 points per game and Ian Miller has contributed 13.7 – including 15.6 the last five games as a starter.

The eighth-seeded Terrapins, who move to the Big Ten next season, knocked off ACC regular-season champion Virginia 75-69 in overtime Sunday and look poised to make a run in the conference tournament again. The Terrapins likely have to win four straight contests and earn the automatic bid to reach the NCAA Tournament, but a similar group won five of seven postseason games a year ago.

TRENDS:

* Favorite is 19-7 ATS in the last 26 meetings.
* Seminoles are 3-8 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
* Over is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* Terrapins are 7-1 ATS in their last eight games overall.

Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs. Pittsburgh Panthers (-8)

Robert Morris-transfer Coron Williams has been the top offensive threat for the Demon Deacons of late while averaging 16.8 points over the last four games, including 25 in Wednesday’s victory. Leading scorer Codi Miller-McIntyre (12.7) is averaging fewer than 10 points the last nine games, but has dished out at least six assists in six of them.

The Panthers beat the No. 12 seed Demon Deacons 80-65 during the regular season. The Panthers come into the event after leading the league in assists per game, finishing second in rebounding margin and third in scoring with two important veteran leaders. Senior Lamar Patterson is fourth in the ACC in scoring and made the All-ACC second team while fellow senior Tailb Zanna gives the Panthers a 6-9 presence inside.

TRENDS:

* Demon Deacons are 1-6 ATS in their last seven games following a ATS win.
* Panthers are 3-8 ATS in their last 11 games overall.
* Over is 13-4 in Demon Deacons last 17 neutral site games.
* Over is 5-1 in Panthers last six overall.

Miami Hurricanes vs. North Carolina State Wolfpack (+2)

The Hurricanes likely need to repeat as tournament champion to reach the NCAA Tournament, but needed stingy defense to survive shooting 38.6 percent from the field against Virginia Tech. Rion Brown scored 15 points and leads the Hurricanes in scoring at 15.3 points, averaging 20 in his last three games prior to Wednesday.

T.J. Warren put together a fabulous season, leading the ACC in scoring at 24.8 points, field-goal percentage at 53.2 and offensive rebounding at 3.2 per contest. The sophomore closed the regular season with a career-high 42 points against Boston College on Sunday after scoring 41 at Pittsburgh on March 3.

TRENDS:

* Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Miami is 3-1-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Underdog is 7-1-1 ATS in the last nine meetings.
* Over is 6-0 in North Carolina State's last six games.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. Clemson Tigers

Georgia Tech has won three in a row, including an upset of then seventh-ranked Syracuse, and got 20 points and 13 rebounds from Robert Carter Jr. in its tournament opener. Carter is averaging 17.4 points and 8.4 rebounds in his past five games, fully recovered from a December knee injury, and the Yellow Jackets are as healthy as they have been all season.

Clemson has defeated 11th seed Georgia Tech twice and, should the Tigers advance, they would face No. 3 seed Duke in Friday’s quarterfinals – a team the Tigers beat in their only matchup. The Tigers will turn to junior forward K.J. McDaniels, the ACC’s top shot blocker at 2.8 per game and the conference’s defensive player of the year, to lead the way. McDaniels has five games of at least six blocked shots this season, and leads Clemson in scoring, rebounding, blocks and steals.

TRENDS:

* Georgia Tech is 4-1 ATS in its last five games overall.
* Clemson is 5-2 ATS in its last seven neutral site games.
* Over is 7-1 in Clemson's last eight games overall.
* Under is 16-6 in Georgia Tech's last 22 neutral site games.

SEC Tournament betting cheat sheet: Round 2
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas A&M Aggies vs. Missouri Tigers

The Aggies limp into the tourney having lost three of their last four games, including a surprising 69-64 home loss to Auburn on Saturday, and with just eight scholarship players on the roster. Junior forward Jamal Jones, who leads the team in scoring (13.4) and averaged 16 points in SEC play, missed practice on both Monday and Tuesday with a 103-degree temperature and is questionable for the game.

The Tigers are 4-1 in tournament play under Frank Haith, including the 2012 Big 12 Tournament title, and went 1-1 last season in their first SEC Tourney. Junior guard Jabari Brown (19.7) leads the team in scoring and was a first team all-SEC pick while backcourt mate Jordan Clarkson ranks second in scoring (18.1) and was chosen to the second team.

TRENDS:

* Aggies are 12-4 ATS in the last 16 meetings.
* Over is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings.
* Aggies are 3-12 ATS in their last 15 neutral site games.
* Tigers are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.

South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Arkansas Razorbacks

The Gamecocks were hot down the stretch, winning three of their last four games including a 72-67 upset of then-No. 17 Kentucky. Senior guard Brenton Williams (15.2) leads the team in scoring and had 29 points in a 71-64 loss to the Razorbacks on Feb. 19. Freshman guard Duane Notice had a career-high 23 points in Wednesday night's win over Auburn, including 4-of-4 3-pointers, and also grabbed eight rebounds.

Arkansas seemed to be building up a lot of momentum for the SEC tournament with six straight wins before ending the regular season with a 83-58 clunker at Alabama. Freshman forward Bobby Portis was an all-SEC second team pick and is averaging 12.4 points and 6.6 rebounds. Junior guard Rashad Madden leads the Hogs in scoring (12.7) and has made a team-high 48 3-pointers.

TRENDS:

* South Carolina is 6-1-1 ATS in its last eight games following a SU win.
* Arkansas is 5-12 ATS in its last 17 neutral site games.
* Under is 4-0 in South Carolina's last four games overall.
* Over is 4-1 in Arkansas' last five neutral site games.

Alabama Crimson Tide vs. LSU Tigers

Alabama has won two of its last three contests to close out the regular season, including an impressive 83-58 victory over Arkansas. The Crimson Tide hope to beat LSU for the second time this season following their 82-80 win on Jan. 25 and spring a few surprises in the conference tournament.

The seventh-seeded Tigers dropped a 69-61 decision at home to Georgia on Senior Day, which likely ensured that they will miss the NCAA tournament for the fifth consecutive year. Johnny O'Bryant III, who leads the team in scoring (15.6) and rebounding (7.9), was held to just five points on 2-of-8 shooting in the loss to Georgia.

TRENDS:

* Favorite is 6-1-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.
* Over is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Crimson Tide are 4-1 ATS in their last five vs. Southeastern.
* Tigers are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 neutral site games.

Mississippi State Bulldogs vs. Mississippi Rebels

Mississippi State, the 14th seed, opened the tournament with an impressive 82-68 victory over No. 11 Vanderbilt, which snapped a 13-game losing streak. The Bulldogs split the season series with the Rebels as each team emerged victorious on their home court. Mississippi State has won eight of the last 11 meetings in the series and 23 of the last 32 as it hopes to continue its dominance over its bitter rival and advance to the quarterfinals.

Marshall Henderson, who leads the Rebels in scoring (19) and steals (1.5), has knocked down at least one 3-point field goal in an SEC-record 64 straight games. Henderson scored a team-high 18 points, but went 2-of-13 from beyond the arc against Vanderbilt to close out the regular season. Ole Miss is ranked 20th nationally in blocks per game (5.7) and recorded eight in its victory over Mississippi State on Jan. 25.

TRENDS:

* Mississippi State is 8-3 ATS in the last 11 meetings.
* Mississippi is 5-1-1 ATS in its last seven neutral site games.
* Over is 5-1 in Mississippi's last six games overall.
* Over is 6-1 in Mississippi State's last seven games following a SU win.

Big East Tournament betting cheat sheet: Round 2
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seton Hall Pirates vs. Villanova Wildcats

Gene Teague led the way for Seton Hall with 14 points and 13 rebounds Wednesday and is averaging 14.5 points and 9.8 rebounds over the last four games. Rebounding will be a major key against the Wildcats as the Pirates outrebounded the Bulldogs 36-33 after entering the matchup ranked 296th in the nation on the glass.

The Villanova Wildcats are in good position to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament if they can secure their first Big East tourney title since 1995. Jay Wright's team is nicely balanced with an offense that ranks 28th in the country in scoring and a defense that has given up fewer than 60 points in four of its last five games. Villanova's top three scorers all average between 14 and 15 points, paced by senior guard James Bell (14.9) and his team-high 81 3-pointers.

TRENDS:

* Seton Hall is 1-4 ATS in its last five games overall.
* Villanova is 4-0 ATS in its last four games vs. the Big East.
* Under is 5-1 in Seton Hall's last six games overall.
* Over is 4-1 in Villanova's last five neutral site games.

St. John's Red Storm vs. Providence Friars (+5.5)

The Red Storm are 10-3 in conference play since starting 0-5 - a skid that ended with a double-overtime home loss to Providence. D'Angelo Harrison has been a major reason for St John's resurgence, averaging 17.6 points on the season with marks of 22.5 points, 8.5 rebounds and four assists over the last two games - both wins.

The Friars had won three straight games prior to absorbing an 88-73 defeat at the hands of Creighton on Saturday. Fortunately for head coach Ed Cooley's team, however, the Red Storm do not have a player anywhere near as talented as the Bluejays' Doug McDermott, who torched Providence for a career-high 45 points to go over 3,000 points for his career.

TRENDS:

* Red Storm are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Red Storm are 1-7 ATS in their last eight neutral site games.
* Friars are 2-5 ATS in their last seven games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record.
* Over is 7-0 in Friars last seven overall.

DePaul Blue Demons vs. Creighton Bluejays

The Blue Demons, who had lost 14 straight matchups with the Hoyas, received 17 points from Billy Garrett Jr. and 14 from Forrest Robinson on Wednesday. The team overcame 5-of-19 3-point shooting, although Robinson was 4-of-5 from behind the arc to help DePaul win for just the second time since Jan. 14.

Doug McDermott has enjoyed a remarkable senior season and can add to his lure by leading No. 14 Creighton to a Big East tournament title in its first year in the conference. McDermott, the likely National Player of the Year in college basketball, leads the nation in scoring at 26.5 points per game and is coming off a career-high 45-point effort against Providence in the Bluejays' regular-season finale.

TRENDS:

* DePaul is 4-1 ATS in its last five games vs. the Big East.
* Creighton is 7-3 ATS in its last 10 neutral site games.
* Under is 4-0 in DePaul's last four games overall.
* DePaul is 1-6 ATS in its last seven neutral site games.

Marquette Golden Eagles vs. Xavier Musketeers (-1)

Marquette, which reached the Elite Eight last year, enters this contest having lost three straight games - the last two coming in heartbreaking fashion. The sixth-seeded Golden Eagles lost at Providence, 81-80, on March 4 and followed that up with a 91-90 defeat versus St. John's four days later - both one-point losses coming in double-overtime.

Xavier appears to be right on the NCAA Tournament bubble, and a loss to Marquette in Thursday's Big East quarterfinals would do the Musketeers no favors as they seek to return to the Big Dance. The Musketeers missed the NCAAs last year for the first time since 2005 and last failed to reach the Tournament in back-to-back years in 1999 and 2000. Their resume includes wins over Creighton, Tennessee and Cincinnati, although a loss to Marquette would mark three straight defeats heading into Selection Sunday.

TRENDS:

* Favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Golden Eagles are 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
* Golden Eagles are 1-5 ATS in their last six games overall.
* Over is 8-1-1 in Golden Eagles last 10 overall.

AAC Conference Tournament betting cheat sheet: Round 2
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Houston Cougars vs. Southern Methodist Mustangs (-8.5)

Houston won four of five to end the regular season, a nice rebound after the Cougars lost seven of eight in the heart of conference play. The player for the Cougars who has been toughest to guard for SMU is Danuel House, a 6-7 forward who combined for 37 points in the two games against the Mustangs this season. House comes in on a high note after reaching double figures in scoring the last 10 games.

Southern Methodist lost its final two regular-season games to finish in a three-way tie for third in the American Athletic Conference, but the Mustangs still managed to hold on to the No. 3 seed heading into the quarterfinals. Balance is one of SMU’s strengths as the Mustangs ended the regular season as the only team in the nation ranked in the top 12 in both offensive and defensive field-goal percentage this season.

TRENDS:

*Cougars are 6-1-1 ATS in their last 8 vs. AAC
*Mustangs are 5-21-1 ATS in their last 27 neutral site games.
*Over is 8-2 in Cougars last 10 neutral site games
*Cougars are 4-1 ATS in the last 5 meetings

Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Louisville Cardinals

The Scarlet Knights hung with the defending national champion in January before suffering a 102-54 loss to the Cardinals last month. Rutgers hasn't beaten Louisville since 2006 and trails the series 13-1.

Louisville won nine of its final 10 games to claim a share of the AAC regular-season title but lost a coin flip with Cincinnati for the tournament's top seed. Louisville leaned on its defense late in the season, holding nine of its last 15 opponents - including ranked foes Cincinnati and Connecticut - to less than 40 percent shooting.

TRENDS:

* Favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Rutgers is 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Rutgers is 5-1 ATS in its last six games overall.
* Louisville is 4-1 ATS in its last five games following an ATS win.

Central Florida Knights vs. Cincinnati Bearcats

Isaiah Sykes, coming off a career-high 36 points against Temple, leads the Knights with 17 points and 7.2 rebounds. Tristan Spurlock adds 11.3 points and Calvin Newell averages 10.1 points. The Knights lead the AAC in rebounding (38.4) and Staphon Blair is fourth in the league with 45 blocks.

Cincinnati enters Thursday's American Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal in Memphis, Tenn., with one of the league's top defenses, but ninth-seeded Central Florida will have a little confidence after scoring 198 points in its past two games. The No. 12 Bearcats won four of their last six games to claim a share of the AAC title and won a coin flip over Louisville for the top seed.

TRENDS:

* Knights are 4-1 ATS in their last five neutral site games.
* Bearcats are 6-2 ATS in their last eight neutral site games.
* Under is 4-1 in Knights last five neutral site games.
* Under is 40-11 in Bearcats last 51 overall.

Memphis Tigers vs. Connecticut Huskies (+3)

Connecticut will try to beat fifth-seeded Memphis for a third time this season when the teams meet Thursday. In their most recent meeting, Shabazz Napier scored a career-high 34 points as the senior guard led the Huskies to an 86-81 overtime victory on Feb. 15. Another player who’s due for a big game is reserve guard Niels Giffey, who scored a season-low one point in Saturday’s loss to Louisville.

Memphis did a better job against Daniels in the second matchup, holding him to eight points on 2-for-8 shooting and six rebounds. Austin Nichols is in a groove for the Tigers and that should lead to better things for the 6-8 freshman forward. Nichols has reached double figures in scoring in a season-high six straight games and is shooting 68.6 percent from the floor in the last eight.

TRENDS:

*Tigers are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 neutral site games
*Huskies are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 vs. AAC
*Under is 5-1 in Tigers last 6 neutral site games
*Under is 10-1 in Huskies last 11 vs. AAC

Big 12 Conference Tournament betting cheat sheet: Round 2
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kansas State Wildcats vs. Iowa State Cyclones (-3)

Iowa State star Melvin Ejim proved unguardable in two regular-season matchups against Kansas State and the defensive-minded Wildcats will attempt to slow him down when they play the No. 16 Cyclones in Thursday’s Big 12 tournament matchup. Ejim, the Big 12 Player of the Year, averaged 25 points and 12.5 rebounds as the teams split two regular-season meetings. The fourth-seeded Cyclones have won just one conference tournament game under fourth-year coach Fred Hoiberg.

Kansas State is just 5-9 away from home and allowed opponents to score an average of 69.1 points shoot 43.4 percent from the field in those 14 games. The Wildcats are 28-2 when holding opponents to 60 or fewer points in coach Bruce Weber’s two seasons at the school. Marcus Foster made a season-best seven 3-pointers while scoring 29 points in the regular-season finale against Baylor and has put together one of the top campaigns by a freshman in school history.

TRENDS:

*Wildcats are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 vs. Big 12
*Cyclones are 4-12 ATS in their last 16
*Over is 38-17-1 in Cyclones last 56 overall
*Over is 4-0 in last 4 meetings

Oklahoma State Cowboys vs. Kansas Jayhawks

Marcus Smart had 18 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and six steals in a stellar effort against the Red Raiders as he continued his fine play since returning from a three-game suspension for shoving a Texas Tech fan. Smart averaged 18.5 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and four steals as the Cowboys split two regular-season meetings with the Jayhawks.

Top-seeded Kansas will be without standout center Joel Embiid when they begin Big 12 tournament play Thursday. Leading scorer Andrew Wiggins (16.8) will be under the spotlight and asked to elevate his performance after setting a school freshman record with 41 points in a loss to West Virginia last Saturday.Big 12 tourney play.

TRENDS:

* Oklahoma State is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
* Underdog is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.
* Oklahoma State is 5-1-1 ATS in its last seven games overall.
* Kansas is 1-5 ATS in its last six games vs. a team with a SU winning record.

Baylor Bears vs. Oklahoma Sooners

Baylor is playing well with eight wins in nine games after Wednesday's 80-62 victory over Texas Christian. Bears forward Cory Jefferson had 20 points and 10 rebounds in the win over the Horned Frogs and is looking forward to a third meeting with the Sooners.

The Sooners win games with offense and their of average 82.5 points is the program’s highest output since the run-and-gun club under Billy Tubbs scored 87.4 per game in 1993-94. Sharpshooter Buddy Hield leads the way with a 16.8 average and 86 3-pointers and the sophomore guard made three or more 3-pointers in 14 of Oklahoma’s 18 conference games.

TRENDS:

* Over is 14-6 in the last 20 meetings.
* Bears are 6-19-1 ATS in the last 26 meetings.
* Bears are 1-4 ATS in their last five neutral site games.
* Sooners are 20-8 ATS in their last 28 vs. Big 12.

West Virginia Mountaineers vs. Texas Longhorns (-3)

West Virginia ended the regular season with an impressive victory over top-seeded Kansas but the Mountaineers have more work to do if they want to be part of the NCAA Tournament field. West Virginia has no chance of landing an NCAA tourney bid if it goes one-and-done in the Big 12 tourney and coach Bob Huggins is aware work needs to be done. “I think if we won two, we’d be in great shape,” Huggins told reporters. “But I think if we can win that first one that we would be pretty good.”

Texas defeated the Mountaineers twice in the regular season by an average of 14 points and is looking to regain the momentum if had during a seven-game winning streak that ended in early February.Leading scorer Jonathan Holmes has been bothered by a knee injury for close to a month and it remains to be seen if he can hold up for three straight nights should the Longhorns make a run to the title game.

TRENDS:

*Underdog is 5-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings
*Longhorns are 1-5 ATS in their last 6
*Over is 17-5 in the Mountaineers last 22 vs. Big 12
*Over is 4-1 in Longhorns has 5 vs. a team with a winning S.U. record

Pac-12 Tournament betting cheat sheet: Day 2
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Utah Utes vs. Arizona Wildcats (-7.5)

The Utes remain squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble even after defeating Washington 67-61 in Wednesday’s first round. Utah has lost nine straight to top-seeded Arizona, but gave the Wildcats a scare Feb. 19 in Salt Lake City before falling 67-63 in overtime.

Arizona appears to have a firm hold on a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, regardless of what happens at this week’s Pac-12 tournament in Las Vegas. The Wildcats dominated the Pac-12 awards, with guard Nick Johnson (Player of the Year), forward Aaron Gordon (top freshman) and Miller (Coach of the Year) each praised for leading the Wildcats to a 15-3 mark in league play. Point guard T.J. McConnell was a second-team all-Pac-12 selection and forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson was named to the all-freshman team.

TRENDS:

* Utes are 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.
* Utes are 5-1 ATS in their last six neutral site games.
* Wildcats are 4-1 ATS in their last five neutral site games.
* Under is 15-5-1 in Wildcats last 21 neutral site games.

Colorado Buffaloes vs. California Golden Bears

The Buffaloes will need a better performance against California after committing 13 turnovers on Wednesday against a struggling USC team. “We made just enough winning plays,” coach Tad Boyle told reporters. “We’re going to have to make a lot more against a very good Cal team.”

They’ll also need to figure out a way to slow down Golden Bears point guard Justin Cobbs, who scored 21 points against the Buffaloes in their last matchup and was named a first team All-Pac-12 selection after averaging a team-high 15.6 points. The Golden Bears haven’t scored more than 66 points in their last six games, and they could use a strong shooting game from freshman guard Jordan Mathews, who has made 14 3-pointers over his last eight games.

TRENDS:

* Buffaloes are 8-1 ATS in the last nine meetings.
* Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Buffaloes are 1-4-1 ATS in their last six neutral site games.
* Golden Bears are 0-6 ATS in their last six games overall.

Oregon Ducks vs. UCLA Bruins

The Ducks won their eighth straight Wednesday with an 88-74 victory over No. 10 seed Oregon State, which faded down the stretch against the deeper Oregon squad. The Ducks bench outscored the Oregon State reserves 46-6, and coach Dana Altman was able to rest his starters for much of the second half.

Arizona’s Nick Johnson was named the Pac-12 Player of the Year, but many observers thought the award could have gone to Bruins wing Kyle Anderson, who averages 14.9 points and leads the team in rebounding (8.7) and assists (6.6). Anderson and guard Jordan Adams were named to the 10-player first team, while guards Zach LaVine and Bryce Alford were on the league’s all-freshman team.

TRENDS:

* Ducks are 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.
* Bruins are 12-3 ATS in their last 15 games following a ATS loss.
* Ducks are 7-0-1 ATS in their last eight neutral site games.
* Over is 20-7 in Bruins last 27 neutral site games.

Stanford Cardinal vs. Arizona State Sun Devils

The Cardinal are hoping to reach the NCAA Tournament for the first time in six years under coach Johnny Dawkins, but they probably didn’t impress the selection committee Wednesday. Stanford trailed with 9:25 remaining before drawing clear from the Cougars, who were 3-15 in league play. Stanford and Arizona State split two games during the regular season, with the Cardinal winning 76-70 at home Feb. 1 before losing 76-64 in Tempe on Feb. 26.

The Sun Devils closed the season with two straight losses to the Oregon schools, but received some good news Monday when center Jordan Bachynski was named as the league’s top defensive player and Carson received All-Pac-12 first-team honors. Bachynski leads the nation with 131 blocks, but the Sun Devils’ conference-worst rebounding margin (minus-2.3) could mean trouble against Stanford’s formidable frontline.

TRENDS:

* Cardinal are 7-2 ATS in the last nine meetings.
* Cardinal are 0-3-2 ATS in their last five neutral site games.
* Sun Devils are 4-13 ATS in their last 17 neutral site games.
* Under is 16-7-1 in Sun Devils last 24 Thursday games.
