Gordon prevails in 3-Point Contest
February 18, 2017

NEW ORLEANS -- Credit the assist to Paul George.

Indiana Pacers guard Glenn Robinson III won the Verizon Slam Dunk title over Suns rookie forward Derrick Jones Jr. on Saturday night by leaping over his 3-inches-taller teammate, the Pacers mascot and a Pacers dance team member for a reverse slam that merited a perfect 50 in the final round of the All-Star Weekend premier skills event.

In the final round, consisting of two dunks, Robinson faced off against the Phoenix rookie, who also advanced from the original four-man competition. The Clippers' DeAndre Jordan and the Magic's Aaron Gordon were eliminated in the earlier rounds.

Jones essentially lost the final round with a poor first dunk attempt, which merited him only 37 points. Even though Jones scored a 50 on his second dunk for a two-dunk total of 87, Robinson needed only 44 points on his second dunk of the finals to win the title.

He did it with flair. George set up near the basket, placing the ball behind his head. In front of George were the Pacers mascot -- Boomer the Panther -- and a member of the Pacers dance squad named Kayla.

Robinson came in from the right wing, grabbed the ball, leaped over the three people, ducked his head so that it wouldn't hit the rim and completed a spectacular reverse slam.

The perfect 50 gave him a two-dunk total of 94, easily eclipsing Jones.

"I originally planned for it just to be PG (Paul George)," Robinson said. "I knew I had to bring out something special. We added the mascot and the cheerleader. I really just wanted to get up high and dunk that thing hard, man. My adrenaline was going. It felt like I was looking at the rim. All I knew was the crowd went crazy."

Robinson said he first dunked the ball when he was a high school sophomore seven years ago, and he said it was hard to imagine that he was now holding the trophy once made famous by Michael Jordan and Dwight Howard.

"My head was at the rim," Robinson said. "I'm an explosive player."

Robinson took the first-round lead with a perfect score of 50 from the five judges -- Gary Payton, Alonzo Mourning, David Robinson, Dominique Wilkins and Chris Webber.

He came in from the right wing and leaped over two persons -- a man with a boy on his shoulders -- grabbed the ball in mid-air and slammed home a left-handed dunk.

Robinson's perfect score put him ahead of Jones (45), Jordan (41) and Gordon (38).

Jones probably had room for argument for his 45, because he actually leaped over four teammates to slam home a left-handed dunk, but he got only 9s from all five judges.

Jones got a perfect 50 in the second round with an assist from teammate Devin Booker, who bounced the ball off the side of the backboard. Jones caught the ball in mid-air, wrapped it between his legs and finished with a left-handed slam.

Earlier Saturday:

-- Houston Rockets guard Eric Gordon, the NBA's leading 3-point shooter this season, defeated Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving in the overtime round of the JBL 3-Point Contest, scoring 21 points to Irving's 18 in the extra period.

Although Gordon heard scattered boos from the Smoothie King Center crowd -- he played four seasons for the New Orleans Pelicans before signing as a free agent with the Rockets in the offseason -- he nailed several important jumpers, including a final shot in the second round to send the game into overtime.

"It's all about getting hot," Gordon said. "All of us know, as shooters, anybody can get hot on any given night. Tonight was my night. As shooters, it's all about being consistent."

The 3-Point Contest went to overtime after Gordon and Irving scored 20 points each in the second round, eliminating the Charlotte Hornets' Kemba Walker, who had 17.

The shocker in the first round of the 3-Point Contest was that Golden State guard Klay Thompson, the reigning champion, was knocked out after scoring just 18 points.

The top three of the eight contenders advanced to the final. Despite the scattered boos, Gordon led all performers with 24 points in the first round, followed by Irving (20) and Walker (19).

The Los Angeles Lakers' Nick Young (18), Thompson (18), the Dallas Mavericks' Wesley Matthews (11), the Toronto Raptors' Kyle Lowry (11) and the Portland Trail Blazers' CJ McCollum (10) were knocked out.

-- New York Knicks 7-foot-3 center Kristaps Porzingis won the Taco Bell Skills Challenge by defeating Utah Jazz 6-foot-8 forward Gordon Hayward in the final. Porzingis won by nailing a 3-pointer from the left side of the key on his first attempt.

"Before we started doing it, while I was doing the walk through, I knew that the pass and the shot on the 3-pointer was the most important parts of that," Porzingis said. "And I was able to make the pass on the first try all three times. And then in the final, that last shot just went in. So just a little bit of luck."

NOTES: In his annual "state of the NBA" press conference, commissioner Adam Silver said he hopes the U.S. will not impose a broad ban on global travel because any restrictions could affect the international scope of the league. While Silver said he does not have access to security briefings that would justify a travel ban, he said, "We are a business based on global mobility. Twenty-five percent of our players were born outside the United States. We do a tremendous amount of business outside the United States. The NBA stands for the very best coming together to perform at the highest level." ... Silver said two NBA players were born in the Sudan, one of the countries on the restricted travel list. (The travel ban was struck down by a federal appeals court and currently is on hold.) ... The number of NBA players born outside the U.S. grew from 20 percent last year to nearly 25 percent this year, Silver said, adding that nearly half the players selected in the two rounds of the 2016 draft were born outside of the country. ... Silver said in the newly named Gatorade League (G League), which will replace the D League, each team will have two positions for players with no current NBA affiliation. Those players can be paid more money than other developmental players, which means more international players may want to hone their games in the U.S. ... Silver said reducing the preseason and increasing the regular season by one week beginning with the 2017-18 season will cut down on the number of back-to-back games and the necessity of teams playing four games in five nights. ... The NBA still is in favor of moving the minimum player age from 19 to 20, but the Players Association favors lowering the age minimum from 19 to 18. Silver said that issue would continue to be studied "outside the bright lights of collective bargaining." ... Asked if he, like Cleveland G Kyrie Irving, thinks the earth is flat, Silver said, smiling: "Kyrie and I went to the same college (Duke). He may have taken some different courses than I did. In all seriousness, as he made clear today, he was trying to be provocative, and I think he was effective. Personally, I think the world is round." ...

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame named 14 finalists Saturday to be considered for election in 2017: referee Hugh Evans, Rebecca Lobo, Kim Mulkey, former Villanova coach Rollie Massimino, Tracy McGrady, Sidney Moncrief, Rudy Tomjanovich, Chris Webber, Tim Hardaway, coach Bill Self, high school coach Robert Hughes, coach Muffet McGraw, coach Bo Ryan and AAU champions Wayland Baptist University. The class will be announced April 3. Candidates need 18 of 24 votes from the Hall of Fame selection committee to gain induction.

NBA honors Sager with $500K donation
February 19, 2017

The NBA continued honoring the memory of late TNT sideline reporter Craig Sager by donating $500,000 to the SagerStrong Foundation on Saturday night.

The league gave Sager a tribute following Houston Rockets' guard Eric Gordon's victory over Cleveland's Kyrie Irving in the 3-point contest.

TNT's Ernie Johnson came onto the court with Gordon, Irving and Kemba Walker. He said $10,000 would be donated to the cause for each shot they made in a minute.

TNT analyst Reggie Miller got involved by being accompanied to the court by All-Stars James Harden and DeMar DeRozan along with WNBA champion Candace Parker and actors, including Anthony Anderson and Michael B. Jordan.

Harden and DeRozan combined to make 13 3-pointers for $130,000. Johnson then offered to raise it to $500,000 if Stephen Curry made a halfcourt shot.

Curry missed but Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal lifted Sager's youngest son Ryan, in the air for a dunk to reach $500,000.

Sager died Dec. 15 at 65 following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Sager was annonced earlier Saturday as the Curt Gowdy Media Award winner by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) The Latest on Saturday's NBA All-Star events (all times local)

9:25 p.m.

Glenn Robinson III of the Indiana Pacers is the All-Star slam dunk champion.

Robinson beat Derrick Jones Jr. of the Phoenix Suns in the final round. Robinson clinched the win with a perfect 50 on the final dunk of the night - going over three people for a reverse dunk and nearly touching his head on the rim in the process.

Robinson and Jones embraced when it was over, and Robinson went over to shake hands with judges.

''This is just the beginning for me,'' Robinson said.

Robinson started with a dunk where he leaped over Indiana teammate Paul George, grabbing the ball from the All-Star before his slam that merited 44 points.

Jones failed to go over three people - or rather, one man, one Suns dancer and Suns' mascot The Gorilla - and get a dunk down in his first attempt of the finals, yet got 37 points. His second attempt, an off-the-bounce, between-the-legs slam, was a perfect 50.

DeAndre Jordan of the Los Angeles Clippers and Aaron Gordon of the Orlando Magic were eliminated in the first round. Gordon finished second to Minnesota's Zach LaVine in last year's contest.

---

9:05 p.m.

The dunk contest is underway, and the props are out.

DeAndre Jordan jumped over a turntable, and DJ Khaled - who, of course, captured the whole thing on his Snapchat. Derrick Jones Jr. jumped over four teammates, though got a boost from the shoulder of one of them. Glenn Robinson III went over two people, one on the shoulders of the other and pulled off easily the best dunk of Round 1.

As for the pre-contest favorite, Aaron Gordon?

He broke out a drone.

Gordon needed three tries before getting a ball-dropped-from-drone, take it off the bounce, between the legs dunk down. The judges weren't impressed, and he trails after Round 1.

---

8:45 p.m.

With some long-range shots and a Shaq-aided slam, the SagerStrong Foundation has received a $500,000 donation.

Following a tribute to Craig Sager after the 3-point contest, TNT broadcaster Ernie Johnson came onto the court with champion Eric Gordon and finalists Kyrie Irving and Kemba Walker. Johnson said $10,000 would be donated to the charity for each shot they made in a minute.

Then TNT analyst Reggie Miller, one of the great 3-point shooters in NBA history, said he wanted to get involved, bringing with him onto the court All-Stars James Harden and DeMar DeRozan, WNBA champion Candace Parker and actors, including Anthony Anderson and Michael B. Jordan.

They combined for 13 makes for $130,000, and Johnson then offered to raise it to $500,000 if two-time MVP Stephen Curry could make a halfcourt shot. Curry missed his attempts, but Shaquille O'Neal then hoisted Sager's youngest son, Ryan, up so he could dunk to earn the total.

Craig Sager died in December at 65 after battling a form of cancer. He was announced earlier Saturday as a Curt Gowdy Media Award winner by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

8:25 p.m.

Houston's Eric Gordon has dethroned Golden State splash brother Klay Thompson as the NBA All-Star 3-point contest champion.

And he did it in New Orleans, where he played the previous five seasons before leaving last summer in free agency.

Gordon's score of 21 in a final-round tie-breaker defeated Cleveland's Kyrie Irving, the 2013 winner who had 18. The pair had each finished with a score of 20 in the final round, meaning they each had to shoot 25 more balls to decide it.

Thompson was stunningly eliminated in the first round, missing a final shot from the corner that could have put him through ahead of Walker.

---

7:40 p.m.

Big men continue to reign supreme in the NBA All-Star Saturday night skills competition.

New York Knicks 7-foot-3 forward Kristaps Prozingis won it, beating Utah's Gordon Hayward in the finals.

Those vanquished in earlier rounds included guards John Wall of Washington and Isaiah Thomas of Boston, both because they couldn't make their initial 3-pointers required to close out the course before Hayward did.

Porzingis emerged from the big-men's division that included the Pelicans' Anthony Davis and Denver's Nikola Jokic.

Porzingis and Hayward were neck and neck until the end of the course, but Porzingis hit his 3 first to end it.

The three-round, obstacle-course competition tests dribbling, passing, agility and shooting skills.

---

6:25 p.m.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver says the league remains in a very good place, citing the continued international growth of the game and successes from a business standpoint.

Silver gave his annual All-Star Saturday night address, saying ''the state of the league is as good as it's ever been.''

A new seven-year collective bargaining agreement that assures labor peace for the foreseeable future is completed, the league is making forays into the eSports world and there's never been more international players in the NBA than there are now.

Silver says about 25 percent of the NBA's players were born outside of the U.S., up about 5 percent from recent years and predicted that number will continue rising.

He also lauded the way New Orleans was able to arrange to host All-Star weekend on relatively short notice. This weekend's events were to be held in Charlotte, before they were moved in response to the state's law regarding protections for the LGBT community. New Orleans was introduced as the new host in August.

---

5:20 p.m.

New Orleans is a happening place this weekend.

There's the All-Star festivities - around a little thing called Mardi Gras. Some of the streets around the Superdome and the Smoothie King Center, the two primary All-Star event venues, were blocked off Saturday afternoon for parades. And there were a couple of fairly large conventions in New Orleans in recent days, so hotels have been busy.

Other streets in the area have been closed since Thursday, to help both residents and visitors figure out different traffic patterns needed to help accommodate two major simultaneous events.

New Orleans center Anthony Davis offered his fellow All-Stars a tongue-in-cheek suggestion on how to handle Mardi Gras and the big crowds: Stay away, he said.

He wasn't serious, and Los Angeles Clippers center DeAndre Jordan wasn't deterred, either.

''I probably won't listen to him,'' Jordan said.

---

4:10 p.m.

Behind MVP Quinn Cook, the East team edged the West 105-100 in the NBA D-League All-Star game at the Superdome.

Cook, the former Duke standout playing for the Canton Charge, led all scorers with 18 points on 7 of 10 shooting, including 4 for 6 from 3-point range. He also had a game-high 12 assists.

Alfonzo McKinnie of Chicago's Windy City Bulls scored 16 points for the East, and Edy Tavares of Raptors 905 - Toronto's affiliate - led all rebounders with 11.

Justin Harper of the Los Angeles D-Fenders paced the West with 17 points. Vander Blue of the D-Fenders scored 15.

In the D-League skills competition, guard Scott Wood of the Santa Cruz Warriors won the 3-point shootout, while forward Troy Williams of the Iowa Energy took the slam dunk contest.

---

12:25 p.m.

LeBron James has arrived at All-Star weekend.

The Cleveland star and three-time NBA champion is on the floor for Eastern Conference All-Star practice. He missed Friday's All-Star events while tending to a family matter.

James tossed a T-shirt into the screaming crowd as he walked out to start practice, sending fans straining to catch the freebie. It's the 13th All-Star weekend for James, the most of anyone in Sunday night's contest.

Says East coach Brad Stevens, ''Watching these guys, everyone should love it.''

---

11:15 a.m.

Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant are on the floor together - though they started on opposite ends.

The Western Conference All-Stars are practicing at the Superdome, and interaction between Westbrook and any of the Golden State Warriors has been limited at best. The four Golden State All-Stars started warming up at one end of the floor, while Westbrook went to the other.

Stephen Curry eventually came down to the end of the court where Westbrook was shooting, and not long after that West coach Steve Kerr of Golden State summoned the whole team to one end of the floor. He told the team to run a little bit of five-man weave, ''to pretend like we're practicing.''

10:25 a.m.

McGrady, Webber, Hardaway, Moncrief among 14 HOF finalists
February 18, 2017

Former NBA stars Tracy McGrady, Chris Webber, Tim Hardaway and Sidney Moncrief are among the 14 finalists for the 2017 Basketball Hall of Fame induction class.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame made the announcement on Saturday at NBA All-Star Weekend in New Orleans.

Four players, seven coaches, one referee, one contributor and one team are finalists from the North American and Women's committees to be considered for election in 2017.

Other finalists include Rollie Massimino, who coached Villanova to the 1985 NCAA championship, NBA referee Hugh Evans, Connecticut star Rebecca Lobo, Baylor women's coach Kim Mulkey, Kansas coach Bill Self and two-time NBA champion coach Rudy Tomjanovich.

Previous finalists returning to the ballot include point guard Hardaway, record-setting high school coach Robert Hughes, Notre Dame women's coach Muffet McGraw, former Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan and 10-time AAU national champion Wayland Baptist University.

"We are grateful to the 14 finalists in the Class of 2017 for the impact they have had on the game we cherish," said Jerry Colangelo, chairman of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. "To be named a Finalist for the Basketball Hall of Fame is an incredible accomplishment and we are proud to honor those who have shaped our game over the years.

"The Honors Committee now has the challenging task of selecting this year's enshrinees and we look forward to making the announcement at the NCAA Final Four in Arizona this April."

Webber played 15 seasons with five NBA teams and was part of Michigan's famed "Fab Five" group in the early 1990s.

"I don't know what I'm most proud of," said Webber, who averaged 20.7 points and 9.8 rebounds in his career and was a five-time NBA All-Star. "I'm proud to be in the room with all these great individuals."

The 82-year-old Massimino is still coaching at NAIA school Keiser University in West Palm Beach, Fla.

Enshrinees will be announced at the Final Four on April 3 and the induction ceremonies in Springfield, Mass., are set for Sept. 7-9.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

— Oklahoma State 80, Kansas State 68— OSU’s PG Jawun Evans is very, very good.

— Kansas 87, TCU 68- Jayhawks clinched at least a tie for 13th straight league title.

— East Tennessee St 93, Furman (+6.5) 81, OT— Paladins are Bad Beat of the Night.

— Arkansas 86, Texas A&M 77— I need to see the Razorbacks play a couple times; they’re probably going to the NCAA’s.

— Houston 75, UConn 70— Kelvin Sampson has Cougars at 19-8; he’s a very good coach.

— Cal State-Fullerton 56, Cal-Irvine 54— Titans are emerging as a Big West contender.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

13) Last year, there were 932 intentional walks in 2,430 major league games. This year, you’ll be able to walk a batter without throwing any pitches, just say you want the guy on first base.

Move is designed to quicken the pace of play; the automatic intentional walk has been a rule in amateur ball for a long time. I’m not convinced it’ll shorten games any.

12) From The Sporting News: In the three-year period from 1992-94, 27 of the 30 players who were top 10 picks in the NBA Draft averaged double figure scoring as rookies.

The last three years, only seven of 30 top 10 picks int he draft averaged double figure scoring as NBA rookies.

Players entering the NBA now are less ready to contribute immediately, part of why the growth of D-League has happened. Pretty soon every NBA team will have a D-League affiliate, because players who leave college too early need to develop their skills before they’re good enough to be NBA players.

11) One of Magic Johnson’s first acts as Lakers’ boss was to trade Lou Williams to Houston for Corey Brewer and a 1st-round draft pick.

Lakers are +16 with Williams on the floor this year, -380 with him on the bench.

10) Maryland lost big man Michal Cekovsky (ankle) for the season.

9) NHL teams had a “bye week” added to their schedule this year for the first time. So far, teams coming off their bye week are 4-16.

8) University of Texas baseball coach David Pierce is brother-in-law with former Broncos’ coach Gary Kubiak.

7) Butler 74, Villanova 66— Bulldogs sweep season series with the national champs. Butler used an 18-0 run in second half to take control of the game.

6) Oregon 68, California 65— Ducks trailed by 10 with 4:10 to go in a game where they played as badly as they’ve played in a long time— but they won. Dillon Brooks nailed a 3-ball with 0:00.2 left for the win that tore Cal’s hearts out.

I’m not a big fan of Cuonzo Martin as a coach- he’s got an NBA player starting at center and he only took 11 shots in this game.

5) North Carolina 74, Louisville 63— Tar Heels were 21-29 on foul line, Louisville 4-13. Cards were also 5-20 on the arc. Mitchell scored 21; no other Louisville player was in double figures.

4) Syracuse 78, Duke 75— At least we won’t have to listen to everyone campaigning for Syracuse to get into the NCAA’s (like last year); this win puts them in. Orangemen scored last five points of the game, all in transition. Duke didn’t score in last 1:34 of the game. Syracuse is 7-1 at home in the ACC- their last seven games were all decided by 6 or less points or in overtime.

3) Minnesota 89, Maryland 75— Young Terrapins are starting to falter; you get the feeling they could play a mid-major with lot of older players in first round of the NCAA’s and it could be an upset.

As for Minnesota young Pitino’s team has six wins in a row- would the committee put the Gophers up against Louisville in the first round?

2) Weird night in the Big East: favorites of 8, 10 and 13 points all lost straight up; Villanova lost at home to Butler, DePaul won at Georgetown, Providence won at Creighton.

All-Star Weekend has a major impact on NBA scoring after the break

The Los Angeles Lakers own an Over/Under record of 9-2 in the week following the NBA All-Star Game over the last three seasons.

There is an interesting theory circulating within the disgruntled American left in regards to the early stages of Donald J. Trump’s presidency. Essentially, the opposition asserts that Trump and his administration are deliberately and intentionally doing everything in their power to overload the news cycle in an effort to create a series of distractions that divert attention away from what is really taking place behind the scenes.

For example, create an uproar over a proposed “travel ban” in an attempt to keep the media from investigating further into your administration’s alleged ties with Russia.

Whether or not you side with the Trump administration is irrelevant for the purposes of this column. Instead, what I want you to take away from this introduction is the idea that it is important to remain vigilant at all times in order to avoid falling for the dreaded “banana in the tailpipe” ruse.

And in this instance, I’m not talking about politics. I’m talking about sports betting as it pertains to the National Basketball Association.

NBA All-Star weekend came and went with a plethora of intriguing storylines. For starters, this appears to be the “Year of the Beef,” as the Kevin Durant vs. Russell Westbrook, Charles Barkley vs. LeBron James and Phil Jackson vs. Carmelo Anthony rivalries all took center stage in New Orleans.

In addition, the game itself provided plenty of distracting fodder, as the public and media alike theorized as to who Western Conference head coach Steve Kerr would select from his roster to play alongside the “Golden State Four” of Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson.

As it turned out, when playing on the same side Durant and Westbrook are very familiar with each other, and didn't hold anything back when it came to lighting up the score sheet Sunday night.

However, I’m once again here to remind you of the importance in remaining vigilant in regards to the true task at hand. And in this instance, that pertains to the commencement of the second half of the professional hoops season on Thursday, February 23.

Why, you ask? For starters, how about shifting your focus to the fact that over the last three years, the 30 NBA teams have combined to post an Over/Under record of 54-35-1 (.606) to the Over in their first game back off the All-Star break.

Here’s a look at how each NBA franchise has fared in regards to the Las Vegas total in its first game back from the All-Star break over the last three seasons:

NBA Over/Under results in first game following All-Star break 2014-2016

*Note: The following records list the “Over” first and “Under” second.

San Antonio Spurs: 2-1
Toronto Raptors: 1-2
Utah Jazz: 1-2
Washington Wizards: 1-2

Additionally, this profitable trend isn’t limited to only the first game off the All-Star break. If we extend our sample size from “first game” to “first week” off the break over the last three years, we get a record of 89 Overs, 69 Unders and two Pushes, good for an Over covering percentage of 56.3 percent.

Broken down by season, the overall Over/Under record for every NBA game played in first seven days following All-Star weekend looks like this:

2013-2014: 32 overs, 21 unders, 1 push
2014-2015: 24 overs, 28 unders, 1 push
2015-2016: 33 overs, 20 unders

All for a grand total record of 89-69-2 to the Over (.563).

Here’s a look at how that information breaks down by team over the last three seasons:

NBA Over/Under results in first week following All-Star break 2014-2016

*Note: The following records list the “Over” first and “Under” second.

Atlanta Hawks: 6-4
Boston Celtics: 10-2
Brooklyn Nets: 7-3
Charlotte Hornets: 6-5
Chicago Bulls: 7-5
Cleveland Cavaliers: 2-10
Dallas Mavericks: 7-5
Denver Nuggets: 6-6
Detroit Pistons: 6-1
Golden State Warriors: 4-9
Houston Rockets: 7-4
Indiana Pacers: 6-4-1
Los Angeles Clippers: 6-6
Los Angeles Lakers: 9-2
Memphis Grizzlies: 6-5
Miami Heat: 7-4
Milwaukee Bucks: 6-6
Minnesota Timberwolves: 6-4-1
New Orleans Pelicans: 7-5
New York Knicks: 9-3
Oklahoma City Thunder: 6-5
Orlando Magic: 8-3
Philadelphia 76ers: 9-2
Phoenix Suns: 9-4
Portland Trail Blazers: 6-5
Sacramento Kings: 6-3
San Antonio Spurs: 6-5
Toronto Raptors: 6-6
Utah Jazz: 7-4
Washington Wizards: 5-7-1

So, while it was plenty fun watching Russell Westbrook play alongside the Golden State Four Sunday evening in New Orleans, don’t let those theatrics distract you from the potential profits that are there for the taking once the Association returns to action Thursday.

NBA Game of the Day: Clippers at Warriors
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Golden State is unlikely to reach last season's 73-9 regular season but is just as dominant leading the NBA in scoring (118.2), field-goal percentage (50.1), assists (31)

Los Angeles Clippers at Golden State Warriors (-12.5, 230.5)

The stretch run in the NBA begins when teams come back from the All-Star break on Thursday, and everyone is chasing the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors will try to further solidify their standing as the top team in the Western Conference when they host the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday.

The Clippers are one of several teams active on the trade market as they try to add an impact piece to help close the gap between themselves and Golden State, but the return of point guard Chris Paul from a thumb injury might be the only thing the team needs to make things interesting. Paul is expected to be out until the middle of March after undergoing surgery to repair a torn thumb ligament in January, but Los Angeles may have finally figured out how to win without their leader during a string of four straight victories prior to the break. The Warriors are not big players at the trade deadline after making their key acquisition with the signing of Kevin Durant last summer, and they enter the final stretch of 26 games with a 12-game lead over the Clippers in the Pacific Division and a four-game gap over the San Antonio Spurs atop the West. Golden State got less rest than most teams during the break as Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Durant all played in the All-Star game.

TV: 10:30 p.m. ET, TNT

LINE HISTORY: The Warriors opened as 11.5-point home favorites against their Pacific division rivals, but that number wasn’t high enough and was quickly bet to 12 and as of Thursday morning has made it to 12.5. The total opened at 231 and has dropped a full point to 230. Check out the complete line history here.

INJURY REPORT:

Clippers - PG Chris Paul (Questionable, thumb), PF Brice Johnson (Out indefinitely, back)

Warriors - PF David West (Questionable, thumb), C Zaza Pachulia (Questionable, shoulder)

POWER RANKINGS: Clippers (-6.9) - Warriors (-15.3) + home court (-3) = Warriors -11.4

ABOUT THE CLIPPERS (35-21 SU, 29-27 ATS, 31-25 O/U): Perennial All-Stars Paul and Blake Griffin were left out of the All-Star game after injury-plagued first halves but center DeAndre Jordan represented Los Angeles and even earned some playing time with all four Warriors in the West's 192-182 triumph. Griffin missed 20 of the first 56 games but is making up for lost time while averaging 25.5 points on 52.1 percent shooting, 8.9 rebounds and 6.3 assists in eight games this month. Griffin, who can become a free agent this summer, is drawing plenty of interest on the trade market but is considered unlikely to move.

ABOUT THE WARRIORS (47-9 SU, 27-27-2 ATS, 25-31 O/U): Golden State is unlikely to reach last season's record 73-9 regular season but is just as dominant while leading the league in scoring (118.2), field-goal percentage (50.1), assists (31), point differential (plus-12.8) and 3-point defensive field-goal percentage (32.5) while ranking second in defensive field-goal percentage (43.6). Durant is proving to be a seamless fit while averaging a team-best 25.8 points on a career-high 53.9 percent shooting. Durant showed off during the All-Star game by collecting a triple-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists while Curry added 21 points, Thompson scored 12 and Green collected seven rebounds and six assists for the West.

TRENDS:

* Clippers are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 road games.
* Warriors are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
* Over is 5-1 in Warriors last 6 games following a straight up win.
* Over is 4-1 in Warriors last 5 games following a straight up win of more than 10 points.
* Clippers are 0-4 ATS in the last 4 meetings.

CONSENSUS: 63 percent of users are siding with the home favorite Warriors and Over is picking up 60 percent of the totals wagers.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

— For the record, Joe Blanton was the last MLB pitcher to throw an intentional walk.

— Best NBA teams against the spread: 76ers 34-22, Wizards 32-23, Heat 33-24

— Worst NBA teams against the spread: Trailblazers 23-34, Bucks 22-33, Magic 23-34

— Arizona State didn’t sub in entire first half of their game with UCLA last night.

— Lou Williams scored 22 points in 20:00 in his debut for Houston.

— Cardinals-Cowboys is the Hall of Fame Game in Canton in August.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Wrapping up a Thursday night of basketball

13) UCLA 87, Arizona State 75— Sun Devils didn’t sub in the whole first half; they went 14-34 on the arc, fought like hell, but they don’t have many tall players, which is a problem.

12) Michigan State 88, Nebraska 72— Joe Lunardi has the Spartans as a 10-seed right now, opposite Oregon in a second round game. No matter what, some really high seed might play Michigan State in that second round and they’re going to be very nervous about it.

11) Georgia 60, Alabama 55— Dawgs are 8-0 vs spread as an SEC road underdog this year; JJ Frazier had 28 of their 60 points here. Georgia played without injured star Maten.

10) Northeastern 105, Elon 104, 2OT— Teams combined to go 30-70 on the arc, with only 13 turnovers in the whole game. Elon had won six in a row at home.

9) Texas-El Paso 60, FAU 55— UTEP was 2-10 in non-conference games, but now they’re 10-5 in Conference USA. Not sure if they’ve improved a lot or if C-USA is not so good.

8) South Dakota 92, Western Illinois 81— Coyotes have won five games in row, own a half-game lead over North Dakota State in Summit standings; conference tourney is a neutral site, so not as big a deal as in other leagues, but this is South Dakota’s best season since 2010.

7) Arizona 90, USC 77— UCLA comes to Tucson Saturday; big weekend for the Wildcats.

6) Cal-Davis 96, Northridge 85— Aggies are tied for first in Big West with Cal-Irvine.

5) IUPUI 83, Fort Wayne 82— Revenge for IUPUI, which lost first meeting this season with the Mastodons 103-73.

4) Rice 72, Southern Miss 71, OT— Owls are 19-9, 9-6 in C-USA; this is their first winning season since 2012, their first winning conference season since ’05.

3) Eastern Washington 82, Weber State 72— EWU knocks Wildcats out of a tie for first in Big Sky tournament; these teams are now tied for second, could meet again in Big Sky semis.

2) Rockets 129, Pelicans 99— Houston’s bench outscored New Orleans’ bench 79-26. Cousins/Davis combined for 56 points; look at the rest of their squad— not lot of top-flight talent there.

1— New Orleans 82, Central Arkansas 65— Privateers dropped basketball for two years, are in fifth year back in D-I, are in first place in Southland Conference. Good story.

Friday’s NBA Game of the Day: Celtics at Raptors
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Celtics emerge from the All-Star break three games behind Cleveland in the Eastern Conference after a 24-8 surge but are 1-6 ATS in their last 7 meetings against Toronto

Boston Celtics at Toronto Raptors (-3, 215.5)

The Boston Celtics chose to stand pat at the NBA trade deadline while the Toronto Raptors continued to tweak their roster in advance of the two teams meeting Friday night in Canada. The Celtics emerge from the All-Star break three games behind first-place Cleveland in the Eastern Conference after a 24-8 surge and they hope to continue to ride the momentum with the current roster.

"I don't think that, when you're in a position where you're playing at a pretty good level, you should anticipate much change," coach Brad Stevens told ESPN as the deadline approached Thursday afternoon. The Raptors felt otherwise amid a recent 4-11 swoon and bolstered their ranks with the acquisitions of veteran forwards Serge Ibaka, who came from Orlando prior to the All-Star break, and P.J. Tucker, acquired from Phoenix in exchange for center Jared Sullinger and draft picks on Thursday. "He's an excellent defender,’’ coach Dwayne Casey said of Ibaka at practice Wednesday. "I remember the days of going at him from down in Dallas (where Casey served as an assistant). The game has changed from a shot blocking perspective, but it's still there. He can still protect the rim." The Celtics had won four in a row before a one-point loss at Chicago prior to the break, while Toronto snapped a three-game slide with a 90-85 victory over Charlotte, although Ibaka did not suit up for that one.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN, CSN New England (Boston), Sportsnet ONE (Toronto)

LINE HISTORY: The Raptors opened as 3-point home favorites against the Atlantic division leading Celtics and the total is set at 215.5. As of Friday morning neither of those numbers has moved. Check out the complete line history here.

INJURY REPORT:

Celtics - SF Jaylen Brown (Probable, hip), SF Gerald Green (Questionable, heel), SG Avery Bradley (Questionable, achilles), PG Demetrius Jackson (Out Indefinitely, illness)

Raptors - PF Patrick Patterson (Probable, knee), SF P.J. Tucker (Questionable, back)

POWER RANKINGS: Celtics (-6.4) - Raptors (-7.9) + home court (-3) = Raptors -4.5

ABOUT THE CELTICS (37-20 SU, 29-26-2 ATS, 31-25-1 O/U): Boston was linked in rumors to several big names - notably Indiana's Paul George and Chicago's Jimmy Butler - but chose to hold onto several of the draft picks they've stockpiled in recent years. "It's pretty well-known it's a good draft (this year)," general manager Danny Ainge told reporters. "We have very good fortune right now. ... We need to make the most of that." All-Star guard Isaiah Thomas carries a franchise-record streak of 41 straight games with at least 20 points, while fellow guard Avery Bradley (Achilles) - who has missed 20 of the last 21 games - remains uncertain after reportedly going through a small portion of Thursday's practice.

ABOUT THE RAPTORS (33-24 SU, 31-25-1 ATS, 35-25 O/U): While the front office was busy Thursday, guards DeMar DeRozan (personal matter) and Kyle Lowry (travel issues) were absent from practice, depriving the team of another chance to get their All-Stars in sync with Ibaka. Lowry had 32 points in a 109-104 loss at Boston earlier this month while DeRozan was out with a sore ankle, but the latter went for a season-high 41 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in the previous meeting, a 114-106 win for the Raptors at home Jan. 10. DeRozan averaged 29 points in his first three games since returning from the ankle injury but then went 5-for-19 from the floor in back-to-back outings prior to the break.

TRENDS:

* Celtics are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 vs. NBA Atlantic.
* Raptors are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
* Over is 10-2-1 in Celtics last 13 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
* Over is 13-3 in Raptors last 16 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600.
* Celtics are 1-6 ATS in the last 7 meetings.

CONSENSUS: 51 percent of users are siding with the home favorite Raptors and Over is picking up 65 percent of the totals wagers.
