Preview: Blue Jackets (0-5) at Blackhawks (2-3)
Date: October 17, 2015 8:30 PM EDT

Brandon Saad hoisted the Stanley Cup the last time he was on the United Center ice. He's yet to experience a victory since.

Saad returns to Chicago for the first time since his trade to Columbus as the Blue Jackets seek an elusive first win in Friday's clash with the Blackhawks.

Salary cap issues forced Chicago (2-3-0) to part with several key contributors to its third championship in six seasons, with the seven-player deal that sent Saad to Columbus among the most notable and difficult decisions after the 22-year-old set career highs of 23 goals and 52 points in 2014-15.

Saad has so far justified the six-year, $36 million contract he received from his new team by scoring three goals in five games, all regulation losses during the worst start in Blue Jackets' history.

Poor defense is most to blame for Columbus' struggles. Sergei Bobrovsky has allowed four or more goals in all five games and the Blue Jackets have surrendered a league-high 26, half coming in their two most recent defeats.

After yielding five unanswered goals to Ottawa in a 7-3 home loss on Wednesday, Columbus permitted three over the final 16 minutes of Friday's 6-3 setback to visiting Toronto.

"You've got to stick to the plan, you've got to stay with it and what you do as an individual to be successful, what we need as a team to be successful," coach Todd Richards said. "When we lose it, we've given up great opportunities and right now the opponents are cashing in."

The 1995-96 San Jose Sharks were the last team to allow more goals (27) in their first five games.

Bobrovsky owns a 5.07 goals-against average and .835 save percentage, but he stopped 74 of 78 shots in winning both of his 2014-15 starts against Chicago (2-3-0), which is still adjusting to the departures of Saad and four-time 30-goal scorer Patrick Sharp.

The Blackhawks have just 10 goals in five games and return home after being outscored 7-1 in consecutive road losses to Philadelphia and Washington. They went scoreless for 107 minutes, 46 seconds before Viktor Svedberg scored his first NHL goal with an assist from ex-Blue Jacket Artem Anisimov early in the third period of Thursday's 4-1 defeat to the Capitals.

'I mean, we're not happy with how we played the last few games,' center Marcus Kruger said. 'All of us have got to get better and take responsibility.'

A 2 for 17 performance on the power play has coincided with the Blackhawks' slump, though Columbus has allowed five goals while short-handed over its last four.

Chicago looks to bounce back against an opponent it's dominated in recent years. Though Bobrovsky backstopped Columbus to victories in last season's two meetings, the Blackhawks had won 13 straight in the series prior to that.

The Blue Jackets were outscored 25-9 during an 0-5-1 stretch at the United Center they ended with a 5-2 win on March 27, in which Bobrovsky made 31 saves and Cam Atkinson registered a hat trick.

Corey Crawford, who allowed four goals in less than 16 minutes in that game, figures to return for Chicago after Scott Darling started Thursday. Crawford had 26 saves in Wednesday's 3-0 loss in Philadelphia, five days after making 34 in a 3-2 overtime win at the New York Islanders.

Preview: Oilers (0-4) at Flames (1-3)
Date: October 17, 2015 10:00 PM EDT

Todd McLellan expected a challenge when he took the helm of the Edmonton Oilers. He certainly got one.

McLellan is likely to shake things up on the power play as the winless Oilers try to snap a seven-game losing streak against the Calgary Flames on Saturday night.

Edmonton (0-4-0) has missed the playoffs nine straight seasons and turned to McLellan to end that streak. So far, the Oilers aren't providing much hope it'll end in 2015-16 - they've been outscored 13-5 while failing to register a point.

They dropped their first five a year ago.

"I'm not surprised - I'm a little disappointed - but I'm not surprised," McLellan told the team's official website. "The players who haven't been here for very long, they're wondering and they're not sure. Players who have been here for awhile they're going to be the big ones who are going to dictate where we go, how they react to the four losses.

"We knew that we had a lot of work to do here and that hasn't changed."

Edmonton, though, is starting to feel some pressure after dropping its home opener 4-2 to St. Louis on Thursday.

"I think the whole fan base is impatient right now and we are feeling that right now," said left wing Taylor Hall, who got his first goal of the season Thursday. "We don't want to be down 0-4 to start the year. That's probably the worst-case scenario. When you looked at it mid-summer, this is probably the worst you could have imagined. We have to find a way."

In search of answers, McLellan is expected to shuffle the power play, which has gone 1 for 14.

Connor McDavid will remain on one of the units as he tries to bounce back from his worst performance through four games. The 18-year-old phenom, the top pick in last summer's draft, was a minus-3 against the Blues after scoring his first career goal in a 4-2 loss at Dallas two days prior.

"As much pressure as this team has from the outside, I think internally we're putting even more pressure on ourselves to succeed," McDavid said. "We had high expectations for this year. We'll get this thing turned around."

The Oilers can start by beating the Flames for the first time since a 2-0 victory at Calgary on Dec. 27, 2013. They've been outscored 31-10 while the Flames have dominated the Battle of Alberta of late.

The Flames (1-3-0) are trying to avoid a three-game slide after being outshot 22-9 over the last two periods of Friday's 3-1 defeat at Winnipeg. They gave up the decisive tally with 1:28 left in regulation.

"We did lots of good things," coach Bob Hartley said. "We have lots of young players who are learning the game, especially the NHL game, and how to play in late minutes. But they got the last shot and they deserve to win."

Johnny Gaudreau failed to get on the scoresheet Friday after totaling five points through the first three games. The left wing finished last season tied for the rookie scoring lead with 64 points, but he had just two goals in five matchups with Edmonton.

Dennis Wideman has eight points in his last eight meetings with the Oilers, while Sean Monahan has accumulated that many in nine.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Westgate Super Contest (1,727 entrants-- prize pool is $2.5M)
six most popular picks in Week 1 season record: 15-10

6) Giants +4.5 (384)-- Lost 11 of last 14 games against the Eagles.

5) Lions -3 (417)-- Lot of people have faith in this winless favorite.

4) Bills +3.5 (470)-- Only QBs to beat Buffalo both won multiple Super Bowls.

3) Vikings -4 (547)-- Minnesota lost its last five post-bye games.

2) Cardinals -3 (768)-- Bruce Arians against his former employer.

1) Patriots -7.5 (849)-- NE scored 47 ppg in last four games vs Colts.

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

13) Michigan State 27, Michigan 23-- Worst loss in a college football game since the Stanford band play 33 years ago. Wolvernes' special teams dominated the game until the punter dropped a snap with 0:10 left then coughed the ball up when hit and State ran the ball in as the gun sounded for the incredible, Pisarcik-like outcome.

Jalen Watts-Jackson scored the winning TD; sadly, his teammates piled on him in the end zone and he suffered a dislocated hip in the celebration. We wish him well.

By the way, this was an excellent, intense game; Sean McDonough's call of the bizarre final play was really good- he is an underrated play-by-play guy.

12) Memphis 37, Ole Miss 24-- Good news and bad news for the 6-0 Tigers; they beat a regional rival from the SEC, which should really help their recruiting, they're 6-0 and headed to a great bowl, but there is no way on God's green earth that coach Fuente will be in Memphis next year. The big money schools are watching and they're going to throw a lot of cash at him in December.

11) If you wagered on games Saturday just by reading the week's headlines, here is now you did:
-- South Carolina (-1)-- Their coach quit Monday; they still beat Vandy 19-10.
-- USC (+4.5)-- Fired its coach Sunday; they lost 41-31; AD Pat Haden collapsed before the game, but flew back to LA. He's about as good an AD as he was an NFL quarterback, as in, not very good.
-- Florida (+6.5)-- QB was suspended for a year; they lost 35-28 at LSU.

10) Clemson 34, Boston College 17-- BC scored total of 41 points in its last five games; when I watch the Recruiting Day stuff in February, BC better have signed at least two QBs and 15 offensive players in all; their offense is pathetic.

9) Utah 34, Arizona State 18-- Are Utes the best team in the Pac-12? Yes.

8) North Carolina 50, Wake Forest 14-- Apparently a Wake assistant mocked UNC on social media in the offseason for its academic scandal; the Tar Heels remembered yesterday as they hammered the Demon Deacons.

7) LSU 35, Florida 28-- Les Miles is one of our favorites; his kicker scored winning TD on a fake FG with 10:40 left. Who else does stuff like that? LSU is 6-0 and seems to be getting better; this was the Gators' first loss.

6) Royals 6, Blue Jays 3-- Toronto is down 2-0 in another series; David Price had retired 18 hitters in a row, but imploded in the 7th and became first pitcher ever to lose his first seven postseason starts.

5) Georgia 9, Missouri 6-- Dawgs snap two-game skid; loss here would've made the natives VERY restless. Tigers' season has been uudone by its QB getting suspended for off-field activities. Not often a team gives up nine points and still losses.

4) Mets 4, Cubs 2-- Chicago had won nine games in row against the Mets, but that doesn't matter. Daniel Murphy is making hmself very rich this month.

3) Rutgers 55, Indiana 52-- Hoosiers led 52-27 in third quarter; losses like this can implode programs and get coaches fired. This was 5th Rutgers game in last 2.5 years where the losing team scored 38+ points.

2) Baylor 62, West Virginia 38-- If you took West Virginia +21, and watched them score 38 points but not cover the spread, well why are you betting against Baylor?

1) Florida Sate 41, Louisville 21-- Jimbo Fisher is hell of a coach; he lost a QB who went 27-1 as a starter as well as four starters on OL and he still has the Seminoles unbeaten. Golson passed for 372 yards and three TDs; FSU trailed 7-6 at the half.

Preview: Devils (0-3) at Rangers (3-2)
Date: October 18, 2015 1:00 PM EDT

The New York Rangers are searching for the offense that brought them three early wins, while the New Jersey Devils are looking for enough to get their first.

Recent history says the Rangers might have a better chance to snap out of their brief funk when the Devils visit Madison Square Garden on Sunday.

New York (3-2-0) has owned its neighbor across the Hudson River since the start of 2014, stringing together six wins with a wide gap on the scoreboard at 26-10. The Rangers swept last season's four-game series with a 17-7 scoring advantage, but they could use some of that offense for this season's first matchup.

New York put up 12 goals in three wins but has scored just once in back-to-back losses. After making good on 12 of their 81 shots for a 14.8 shooting percentage through three games, the Rangers have scored on one of 66 shots in the last two.

New York's power play is 1 for 14 and has failed on five chances in each of the last two games. Full strength hasn't been any better as the lone goal in losses to Winnipeg and Montreal came short-handed from Mats Zuccarello.

"We're not doing anything right now," said coach Alain Vigneault. "It's a combination of everything."

The lack of production from Rick Nash and Chris Kreider isn't helping. After scoring a career-high 42 goals last season, Nash has yet to notch his first despite a team-high 19 shots. Kreider was New York's second-leading scorer with 21 goals in 2014-15, tied with the retired Martin St. Louis, but is 0 for 11 on his chances. They have three assists combined.

Take away rookie Oscar Lindberg's four goals and Zuccarello's three and the rest of New York's roster has six.

When asked if he was concerned with Nash and Kreider's goose eggs following a 3-0 loss to the Canadiens on Thursday, Vigneault shifted the focus ahead - maybe a bit too far.

"I'm going to take a look at this game and we're going to refocus and get ready for San Jose," said Vigneault, whose team hosts the Sharks on Monday night.

The Devils (0-3-1) have been easy to overlook. They last opened with this record through four games in 2001-02, following that with a six-game winning streak.

They have six goals and have been held to one in three of four games. New Jersey's lone point came on Friday when Adam Henrique forced overtime with a power-play goal late in the third period of an eventual 2-1 shootout loss to San Jose.

'That was one of the better games for us,' first-year coach John Hynes said. 'Is it good enough yet? No. It is a step in the right direction.'

The Rangers will have Henrik Lundqvist in net to try to slow the progression. Lundqvist has won five straight starts against New Jersey with a 1.59 goals-against average and .938 save percentage.

Cory Schneider was as bad against the Rangers last season as Lundqvist has been good against the Devils. New Jersey's netminder went 0-3-1 with an .876 save percentage while starting all four contests.

Preview: Blues (4-1) at Jets (4-1)
Date: October 18, 2015 3:00 PM EDT

Winnipeg never has housed a team that won five of its first six games, even when the first edition of the Jets called the city home.

The St. Louis Blues, meanwhile, are on the verge of accomplishing that feat for the third time in four years.

Winnipeg looks to win its third straight while snapping the Blues' three-game winning streak as its homestand continues Sunday.

The Jets are off to a 4-1-0 start after finishing with a franchise-best 99 points and making their first playoff appearance since relocating from Atlanta in 2011. They won three of a season-opening four-game road trip before kicking off a six-game homestand with Friday's 3-1 victory over Calgary.

It's the franchise's best start since the Thrashers also won four of five to open the 2008-09 campaign.

Dustin Byfuglien scored the go-ahead goal with 1:28 left in the third period before Blake Wheeler added an empty-netter for his team-leading seventh point. Byfuglien has two goals and two assists, recording a point in four separate games.

"He's a guy that's fun to watch when he's playing his game," forward Bryan Little said of Byfuglien. "He's just so strong and big on the puck and he shows he's got a nice pair of hands and a great shot, too.

"When he wants to take that puck to the net, there's not many guys in this league that can stop him."

It's unclear which St. Louis goaltender will have that responsibility. Brian Elliott has won all three of his starts with a 2.00 goals-against average, and Jake Allen made 31 saves in Friday's 4-3 victory over Vancouver.

The Blues (4-1-0) have scored four goals each time during a three-game win streak which spanned four nights. Alexander Steen had a goal and an assist against the Canucks, and Vladimir Tarasenko and Carl Gunnarsson added two assists apiece. Tarasenko has a point in all five games and shares the team lead with Steen at seven.

Kyle Brodziak put St. Louis ahead by three less than four minutes into the third before Vancouver made it interesting.

"You could see the effects of playing three in four nights in the last five minutes," coach Ken Hitchcock said, "but we held it together."

This will be the fifth stop on a six-game trip for St. Louis, which has started at least 5-1-0 twice in the last three seasons.

The Blues may not have top-line center Paul Stastny, though, after he left early Friday after taking a shot to the lower leg and foot area. There's been no official word on his status, and Hitchcock said Stastny, who has a goal and four assists, will be further evaluated prior to the game.

The Jets have scored 18 goals while the Blues have netted 17 to rank among the league's highest-scoring teams, and Winnipeg likely will put Ondrej Pavelec in net as it tries to slow the St. Louis attack.

Pavelec faced 74 shots in his first two starts before stopping 19 of 20 on Friday. He won his final two starts against the Blues last season, making 32 saves in a 2-1 shootout win March 19 before posting a 30-save shutout April 7.

St. Louis had won seven straight in the series prior to those contests with Elliott falling in the first and Allen losing 1-0 in the most recent. Elliott has a 1.91 GAA in his last five starts against the Jets while Allen has stopped 58 of 61 shots over two career outings against Winnipeg.

Preview: Wild (3-0) at Ducks (0-3)
Date: October 18, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

The Anaheim Ducks came one win shy of reaching the Stanley Cup final last spring. Now, they're roughly 37 minutes from franchise futility.

The frustrated Ducks try to avoid their longest shutout streak in team history and worst start to a season in 12 years Sunday night against the visiting Minnesota Wild.

Anaheim (0-3-1) finished with the most points in the Western Conference last season before losing to Chicago in seven games in the conference finals. That was reason enough for the Ducks to enter 2015-16 as a favorite to lift the Cup for the first time since 2007.

Instead, they've been outscored 10-1 and are staring at their worst start since losing the first five games of 2003-04. Defenseman Sami Vatanen got the only tally early in the second period of a 2-1 shootout loss to Vancouver on Monday, and Anaheim has come up empty on 91 shots over 163 minutes, 4 seconds since.

The team record of 200:26 was set as an expansion team in 1993-94, and the home mark is 177:02 in 2000-01.

The Ducks had a 35-25 shot edge Friday but still fell 3-0 to Colorado.

"From fans to players, there is no one in this organization that is happy right now," coach Bruce Boudreau said. "But I did see signs of pulling out of it. I firmly believe if we get one goal, we'll get three or four, but right now it's just such a struggle to score. I've never seen it in my time coaching, and I can't remember it when I was playing, going four games without a forward scoring. It's happening all at once."

Carl Hagelin, Jakob Silfverberg and Ryan Getzlaf have combined for 40 shots and a minus-11 rating. Hagelin didn't have a point through his first five games last season with the New York Rangers, while Silfverberg went 16 games without a goal.

Getzlaf, however, hasn't started a season with such a scoring lull since the first six games of 2011-12, when he finished with a career-low 11 goals.

"It's something that we haven't really gone through pretty much since I've been here, and it's tough," said Corey Perry, who led the Ducks with 33 goals last season and had never been held scoreless in a season's first four games. "It's going to break, and when it does, it's going to feel good."

Anaheim is averaging 2.7 goals while winning nine of its last 10 matchups with Minnesota, including four of five at Honda Center.

While the Ducks are concluding a four-game homestand, the Wild (3-0-1) enter the finale of their three-game trip with three points from the first two contests.

Minnesota is looking to bounce back from Friday's 2-1 overtime defeat at previously winless Los Angeles. Coach Mike Yeo was pleased with the Wild outshooting the Kings 12-5 in the third period and overtime after being outshot 32-14 through two periods.

"That's the thing that pleases me the most," Yeo told the team's official website. "We saw it as coaches, we saw it for sure: The guys were feeling it, and that's the mental toughness that I appreciate right there.

"We didn't accept being tired in that situation. We dug in, we got to our game in the third period, and earned a huge point."

Devan Dubnyk should be back in net after backup Darcy Kuemper made 35 saves in his season debut Friday. Dubnyk is 1-3-1 with a 2.19 goals-against average in his last five meetings with Anaheim.

Zach Parise has at least one point in each of the first four games, totaling five goals and two assists. The left wing has five goals and three assists in his last six games against the Ducks.

Preview: Oilers (1-4) at Canucks (2-1)
Date: October 18, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

Connor McDavid's first multipoint performance lifted the Edmonton Oilers to their first win of the season and ended a lengthy skid to a rival.

The rookie looks to follow up his most productive game by helping the Oilers snap another skid to a Western Canadian foe, the Vancouver Canucks, on Sunday night.

McDavid scored one goal in Edmonton's 0-4-0 start but broke out with two goals and an assist in a 5-2 win at Calgary on Saturday.

"I'm just getting more and more comfortable," McDavid said. "It's only been five games in and I'm starting to feel better."

Taylor Hall also provided a goal and two assists as the Oilers (1-4-0) got a combined nine points from their four No. 1 overall draft picks, including all five goals, while snapping a seven-game skid to the Flames.

McDavid became the latest of those top selections after Edmonton bypassed Buffalo and Arizona in winning the draft lottery following last season.

"There's a ton of pressure on him. It's tough as an 18 year old. You don't quite have the ability to let that stuff drop. We're doing the best we can to surround him with good people," Hall said. "At the end of the day, it's about hockey. It was a great game for him, and we needed him."

An 0-3-2 record against Vancouver last season played a small part in the Oilers getting McDavid, and the Canucks enter this season's first matchup eager to bounce back from their first regulation loss in 2015-16, a 4-3 defeat to St. Louis on Friday.

They attempted a late rally after falling behind by three goals with 3:46 left, and Vancouver (3-1-1) also trailed 3-0 in the first 30:01.

"They kind of did what they needed to do early and then we got better," goaltender Ryan Miller said. "A little too late, but a good push by our guys. We probably need to be better early, all of us."

The Canucks' power play went 0 for 5, putting them 1 for 18 with a man advantage so far. Vancouver has compensated by killing off 12 of 13 penalties.

"We have a lot of pucks on our sticks. We're not making the plays that we know we can," captain Henrik Sedin said.

Vancouver went 4 for 21 on the power play last season against Edmonton and 14 for 16 on the penalty kill. Radim Vrbata scored three of those man-advantage goals while finishing with four goals and four assists in the series.

Vrbata, who doesn't have a point so far this season, will try to snap that slump by adding to his six goals and nine assists in his past 10 meetings.

Daniel Sedin had a team-best 10 points (two goals, eight assists) in last season's five matchups while Henrik Sedin provided one goal and seven assists.

Miller is 12-0-0 with a 2.23 goals-against average lifetime versus the Oilers, winning all five games between the teams last season.

With Cam Talbot in net on Friday, Edmonton could give Anders Nilsson his second start this season and first against Vancouver. Talbot is 1-0-1 with a 2.88 GAA in two lifetime matchups.

Preview: Avalanche (2-2) at Kings (1-3)
Date: October 18, 2015 10:00 PM EDT

After getting back to basics, the Los Angeles Kings are no longer winless and far less frustrated.

They can build on that initial victory by continuing their success over the visiting Colorado Avalanche on Sunday night.

In danger of opening with four straight losses for the first time in club history, Los Angeles (1-3-0) didn't panic but spent its practice time working to solve those early problems. It finally paid off with Friday's 2-1 overtime victory over Minnesota.

"We needed to get down to the fundamentals and what we were doing and get everyone on the same page," forward Jeff Carter said.

Tyler Toffoli had a power-play goal and Anze Kopitar scored 2:19 into overtime to provide a needed boost for a franchise that failed to make the playoffs a year after winning its second Stanley Cup in three seasons.

'It's definitely a big step for us," said Carter, who assisted on Toffoli's goal. 'The first three games were pretty much a wash for us; we didn't really get anything out of them. I'm glad we came out with a better mindset right from that. We played more our style of game. And when we do that, usually good things happen.'

The Kings still have much room to improve.

They've totaled four goals, with Toffoli's the lone power-play score on 17 chances. Opponents are 3 for 20 with the man advantage, but the Kings' 16:45 penalty minutes per game led the NHL heading into the weekend.

But as Carter felt, Friday's effort was more indicative of the team's expectations.

"We were able to establish more zone time," forward Milan Lucic told the NHL's official website. "We were better through the neutral zone. We were better supporting each other. We were able to get more chances; it's just about executing and finishing them off."

Jonathan Quick has allowed three goals on 51 shots in the last two games after giving up nine on 54 in the first two.

"We've got Colorado coming in (Sunday), so we'll turn our focus towards them," said Quick, who has a 1.38 goals-against average during his five-game winning streak against the Avalanche.

Los Angeles has also won five straight over Colorado (2-2-0), and earned at least one point in the last eight meetings.

The Avalanche bounced back from Wednesday's 6-2 defeat to Boston by winning their road opener, 3-0 at Anaheim on Friday.

"I'm very proud of our players," coach Patrick Roy told the Avalanche's official website. "They showed a lot of character. We had to come up with a big performance."

Backup Reto Berra made 35 saves for his second career shutout. Berra has stopped all 40 shots he's faced this season and could make his first start against Los Angeles and second straight in place of Semyon Varlamov, who yielded 13 goals while posting a 5.07 GAA and .841 save percentage in the first three contests.

"(Berra's) been good," Roy said. "In training camp, he played well. (Goaltending coach) Francois (Allaire), before we left, said he was practicing really well and he was sharp."

Avs forward John Mitchell didn't score more than 12 goals in any of his first seven seasons but has one in each of the four games. He doesn't have a goal in 11 against the Kings.

Carter has seven goals and three assists during a seven-game point streak against Colorado.

Grand Salami - October
October 18, 2015

The Grand Salami in pro hockey is decided by adding up all the goals scored in every game scheduled for that particular day. You can wager on 'over' or 'under' the Grand Salami total. The total is set by adding up all listed 'over/under' odds for each game on that particular day.

Note: The Grand Salami will have no action if any game is suspended or cancelled before the regulation time of three twenty minute periods. Also, regardless of the number of goals scored during the shoot out portion of the overtime, the final scored recorded for the game will give the winning team on more goal than its opponent based on the score at the end of regulation time.

*The majority of sportsbooks do not put out a total on the Grand Salami when there is only one game on the card. For tracking purposes, we will continue to show the 'over/under' for goals and combined goals scored on days with just one game.

Armadillo: Monday's List of 13: Wrapping up an NFL Sunday.......

13) Broncos 26, Browns 23 OT-- Denver is 6-0; their defense scored another TD, the offense also scored one TD, is now just 12-52 on 3rd down last four games. Browns played third game in row decided on last play- they lost two of them.

12) Bengals 34, Bills 21-- Cincy had huge 26-yard advantage in field position; every Buffalo drive started 80+ yards from goal line. Unbeaten Bengals have a bye week coming up, before they go to Pittsburgh in Week 8.

11) Vikings 16, Chiefs 10-- Minnesota is 3-0 at home, 0-2 on road; Chiefs lost last five games. KC had only three points on two red zone drives- they had only 51 yards in first half. Rookie WR Diggs caught seven balls for 129 yards for Minnesota.

10) Texans 31, Jaguars 20-- Houston was +3 in turnovers; they had two takeaways in first five games combined. Divisional home favorites are now 3-14 vs spread this season. Jaguars head to London next week to play the Bills.

9) Lions 37, Bears 34 OT-- Detroit gets first win in weird game where Chicago had a 15-yard edge in field position but was -2 in turnovers. Bears' last two TD drives were both less than 25 yards. Detroit kicked a FG at 2:46 mark to cut Chicago lead to 31-27, a poor decision, but both teams scored after that, to send game to OT.

8) Jets 34, Redskins 20-- Washington is very banged up, missing two starters on OL, the guy who broke Geno Smith's jaw should get a bonus from Jets, as Fitzpatrick has been very solid in this 4-1 start by Gang Green. Jets averaged 9.7 ypa here; only TDs by Washington came on a 37-yard drive and a blocked punt.

7) Mets 4, Cubs 1-- Chicago is in deep trouble after ace Arrieta lost; series moves to Wrigley Field Tuesday night. Murphy homered again for the Mets.

6) Steelers 25, Cardinals 13-- 3rd-string QB Jones came off bench to spark Steelers; he is better than Vick, who pulled hamstring. Arizona has two losses; in both games, they were -3 in turnovers. Redbirds had 469-310 edge in TY, but their 111 penalty yards all seemed to come at key times.

5) Dolphins 38, Titans 10-- Miami's defense was supposedly unhappy with old DC who got fired; they had six sacks, four takeaways vs rookie QB Mariota, as Tennessee finishes three-game homestand 0-3. AFC South teams are 4-9 vs spread in non-division games this season.

4) Panthers 27, Seahawks 23-- Carolina had two TDs in last 3:55, scoring winning TD with 0;32 left; Seahawks have now had a 4th quarter lead in their last five losses. Unbeaten Panthers are now 13-5 vs spread in last 18 games as a road underdog.

3) Packers 27, Chargers 20-- Rivers threw for 503 yards but San Diego is now 0-3 on road, though they're 14-7-1 vs spread in last 22 games as road dog. Green Bay is now 6-0 heading into its bye week; this was first game they didn't cover this year.

2) 49ers 25, Ravens 20-- Niners are giving up 13.3 ppg at home, 40 ppg on road; they averaged 10.9 ypa vs Baltimore defense that has seen better days. Ravens are 1-5 and in a freefall; they were -2 in turnovers, had only 13 points in three red zone drives.

1) Patriots 34, Colts 27-- Game swung on ill-conceived fake punt by Indy in third quarter; two of their three wins this year cae with 40-year old backup QB Hasselbeck playing. Unsure why they let coach Pagano coach this season as a lame duck; if they don't want him, should've fired him last winter and moved on.
