Bruins captain Chara returns to lineup
October 12, 2015

BOSTON (AP) Boston defenseman Zdeno Chara is in the lineup for the first time this season for the Bruins' game against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday afternoon.

The 38-year-old captain missed the first two games with an undisclosed upper body injury. He played just three shifts in the preseason before suffering the injury against the New York Rangers on Sept. 24.

Chara has been the mainstay of Boston's defense the past nine seasons, including a Stanley Cup title in 2011.

The Bruins lost their first two games of the season by a combined 10-4 score that featured a number of defensive breakdowns.

He received a nice hand when he stepped on the ice for the first time in the opening minut

Sabres G Lehner to miss 6-10 weeks
October 12, 2015

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) Buffalo Sabres starting goalie Robin Lehner will miss between six and 10 weeks with a sprained right ankle.

Coach Dan Bylsma revealed the timetable on Sunday after Lehner underwent a series of tests. Lehner was hurt in the second period of Buffalo's season-opening 3-1 loss to Ottawa on Thursday.

He was untouched while circling his own net and before suddenly going down in his crease.

The injury means the Sabres will proceed with backup Chad Johnson and minor-league call-up Nathan Lieuwen. Johnson had 27 saves in a 4-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Saturday.

Lehner was supposed to play a key role with the new-look Sabres this season. They traded a first-round draft pick to Ottawa to acquire the 24-year-old goalie and forward David Legwand in June.

Penguins try to rebound in home opener
October 12, 2015

PITTSBURGH (AP) Loaded with high-end offensive talent, the Pittsburgh Penguins are trying to rebound after scoring only goal in two opening road losses.

They will host the streaking Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night in the home opener at Consol Energy Center.

''I always think it's a process in the beginning of the year when you have several new players,'' Penguins coach Mike Johnston said Monday. ''All of our lines are different. It just doesn't happen at the snap of the fingers. I thought we had the looks and we had the chances, but we just aren't converting.''

The Penguins are 0-2 to start the season for the first time since 2010-11 and they already trail the Metropolitan Division-leading New York Rangers by six points. Montreal is 3-0.

Pittsburgh was about five minutes from breaking the club record for the longest goal-less streak to start a season - set by the 2003-04 team that eventually finished with the worst record in the NHL - until Phil Kessel beat Arizona goalie Mike Smith with a sharp wrist shot to the stick side Saturday night.

Kessel, a three-time All-Star, was acquired during an offseason trade to bolster an already-dynamic offense highlighted by former scoring champions Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.

Kessel provided one of the few highlights in the losses at Dallas and Arizona.

''You have to build as a group and get better each game,'' Kessel said. ''That's what we're trying to do.''

The Penguins have some work to do.

Crosby doesn't have a shot on goal as he tries to adjust to Kessel, who scored 30 or more goals five of his previous six full NHL seasons. Meanwhile, the Penguins are searching for Malkin's left winger, opening the season with fellow Russian Sergei Plotnikov alongside the former Hart Trophy winner and Patric Hornqvist before switching to David Perron.

Johnston also is tinkering with a loaded power play. He has put Crosby and Malkin on separate units with the man advantage, but it hasn't produced a goal in seven chances.

''You can get 30 seconds of zone time and one goal and everyone thinks it's great, and then you can have four opportunities, be all over them, not score and it's struggling,'' Crosby said. ''It's all about executing and finding a way to score. Whether it's two units or everyone's on one, we have to find a way to make sure we're winning the special teams.''

Crosby led the Penguins with 237 shots last season, but he doesn't have any through six periods. He denied deferring too much to Kessel, who finished sixth in the league last season with 280 shots.

''It's just a matter of getting to those traffic areas,'' Crosby said. ''I have to find a way to get to those areas and get shots off.''

And the Penguins have to find a way to put the puck in the net. They feel it's only a matter of time before it all comes together.

''I think there's always an adjustment at the start of the year with new guys,'' Crosby said. ''We've had some good chances, it's just a matter of burying them.''

Preview: Predators (3-0) at Islanders (1-1)
Date: October 15, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

John Tavares played a major role in the New York Islanders' first win in their new arena, and he has a bevy of recent success against the next visiting team.

The Nashville Predators, though, have used their defense to forge one of their best starts in franchise history and will try to remain stingy Thursday night in Brooklyn.

Tavares had a goal and two assists in a 4-2 victory over Winnipeg on Monday, and was denied on a penalty shot late in the third period. The Islanders opened with a pair of losses to Chicago, including a 3-2 overtime defeat in their Barclays Center debut Friday.

New York (1-1-1) is trying to take advantage of 10 home games in its first 15 contests.

"Certainly it's nice to get the first win here," Tavares said. "We felt better on the ice today. We want to take advantage of being home. It's still an adjustment every day but it's coming around."

Tavares has a goal in each of his last five games against Nashville and has an assist in each of the Islanders' three consecutive wins in the series. New York has never won four in a row over the Predators.

Defenseman Nick Leddy had two goals and three assists in last season's two victories. With his help, New York scored a combined nine goals on Vezina Trophy finalist Pekka Rinne in 2014-15.

Rinne has yielded just two so far in Nashville's 3-0-0 start. In his team-record 384th career appearance Tuesday, Rinne finished 1:41 shy of back-to-back shutouts in a 3-1 win over New Jersey, the opener to a three-game road trip.

"He's been great so far this year, like he was great last year," defenseman Roman Josi said. "It gives us extra confidence as a defensive unit, knowing he's back there and stopping everything. He's always there to make the save."

Josi scored two goals as the Predators matched their second-best start. They haven't opened 4-0-0 since winning eight in a row to begin 2005-06 and needed two shootouts in those first four games.

"It's a good thing to still have room for improvement even though we're still 3-0-0," Josi told the team's official website. "We know we can play better and we can work on those things. We'll have to practice on them and get better.

"The Islanders are a tough team; they have a lot of speed, so we'll have to be ready for them. We have to be better to get a win."

The Islanders have started Thomas Greiss in net in two of their first three games with Jaroslav Halak out due to an upper-body injury. Halak and defenseman Thomas Hickey, who also has an upper-body ailment, practiced Wednesday but it's unknown when either player will return to the ice.

Halak is considered day to day, and Hickey was initially expected to miss at least four weeks.

Greiss is 2-2-0 with a 3.23 goals-against average in four career starts against Nashville while Halak is 5-0-1 with a 1.81 GAA in his last six matchups.

The Predators' James Neal has 10 goals and eight assists in his last 15 regular-season games versus the Islanders, but he doesn't have a point so far this season.

New York is 5-1-1 in its last seven home contests against Nashville, including a 5-2 win Feb. 19.

Preview: Stars (2-1) at Lightning (3-1)
Date: October 15, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

The Dallas Stars were one of the NHL's best road teams last season, but their only clunker to begin 2015-16 came away from home.

Dallas begins a four-game trip Thursday night against a Tampa Bay Lightning squad that should be excited to get back on home ice.

The Stars (2-1-0) missed the playoffs for the sixth time in seven seasons in 2014-15 despite tying for the third-most road victories in the league with 24 and having the Art Ross Trophy winner in Jamie Benn.

They beat visiting Pittsburgh 3-0 in last Thursday's season opener before blowing a two-goal lead in Saturday's 6-3 loss at Colorado. Dallas bounced back with Tuesday's 4-2 home win over Edmonton as Jason Spezza recorded his sixth career hat trick.

The Stars finished with 52 shots, their most since firing 55 in a 3-3 tie with Los Angeles on Nov. 8, 1995.

"Credit to all the zone time we had," Spezza said. "It felt like we had the puck a lot. Sometimes it follows you a little more. The power play we moved around pretty good. We didn't score a power-play goal, but we got good looks."

Benn added a goal for the Stars, who also face Florida, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh on its trip.

Kari Lehtonen made 26 saves in his season debut Tuesday after backing up Antti Niemi, while 2013 first-round pick Valeri Nichushkin was a healthy scratch because of a slow start. Lehtonen is 1-2-0 with a 3.41 goals-against average against the Lightning over the last two seasons.

"(Tuesday) was pretty much a blueprint for how you want to play," coach Lindy Ruff said. "You're pretty hard-pressed to make any changes when you dominate a game in that fashion."

Ruff will be forced to make at least one lineup adjustment, though, after Patrick Eaves suffered a lower-body injury that's "not just a day-to-day thing," according to Ruff. The Stars recalled Curtis McKenzie from the AHL on Wednesday to replace Eaves.

McKenzie should make his season debut against the Lightning, who return home after playing three road games in four nights. Tampa Bay (3-1-0) concluded the trip with Tuesday's 3-1 loss to Detroit.

Fatigue could have been a factor after the Lightning scored 13 goals while winning their first three. Coach Jon Cooper felt his club looked sluggish, with Ryan Callahan scoring the only goal 11:03 into the third period.

"(The Red Wings) hit the corners and we didn't," Cooper said. "They made big-time shots, and that's what you have to do against good goalies."

Ben Bishop made 21 saves and has started each game for Tampa, which plays seven of its first 10 on the road. He hasn't faced the Stars since Benn scored twice in Dallas' 5-2 victory April 5, 2014, and it's unclear if Cooper will decide to give his goaltender a rest.

Regular backup Andrei Vasilevskiy is expected to be out until later this month after having vascular surgery, leaving Kevin Poulin, who played in one NHL game last season, as the only other option.

The Lightning have won five of the last six meetings with Dallas, including both last season. Tyler Johnson scored twice in a 5-3 victory Feb. 5 before Tampa overcame two goals apiece from Vernon Fiddler and Tyler Seguin in a 5-4 win March 7.

Preview: Rangers (3-1) at Canadiens (4-0)
Date: October 15, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

The last time the Montreal Canadiens returned home from a road game, it was following a season-ending loss in the Eastern Conference semifinals.

They're back in Quebec on entirely different terms after sweeping a season-opening trip, and the next task is a home-opening victory Thursday night against the New York Rangers to establish their best start in franchise history.

The Canadiens (4-0-0) won their first four home games last season, but it was their first win in a home opener in six seasons. A second straight would give them their first five-game winning streak to begin a season, and they last won their first four games in 1977-78 on their way to a third of four straight Stanley Cups. This season marks the fourth time they've started with four wins, and the previous three have ended with titles.

No pressure, Michel Therrien.

"We couldn't be happier about the way things played out," the fourth-year Montreal coach told the team's official website. "I really like the character of this team. Starting the season with four road games can be a double-edged sword. We were happy to go on the road, but to finish up in Pittsburgh against one of the league's powerhouse teams - and win - really shows the character of our team."

The run, which follows last season's playoff loss to Tampa Bay, has included strong individual efforts with one Canadien having a two-goal game in each win. Max Pacioretty did it for the second time in Tuesday's 3-2 victory in Pittsburgh, giving the club's points leader from the previous four seasons four goals and two assists.

"I couldn't be more impressed with the way we handled that," said Pacioretty, who scored in two of three games against the Rangers last season. "We're having fun. I think everyone's contributing, and that's what makes this the most fun right now. We have everybody on board, and everyone has played a huge role. If we have that right mindset and everyone feels good about themselves, the better we're going to play game after game."

Having a reigning Hart and Vezina Trophy-winning goaltender helps with that. Carey Price has played three games and posted a 1.67 goals-against average and .945 save percentage.

Price has been even better against the Rangers with a 6-1-0 record, 0.43 GAA and .986 save percentage over the last three regular seasons against the Rangers (3-1-0).

Montreal hasn't lost a regular-season series with New York since 2007-08, going 17-7-1 since. At home, the Canadiens have gone 11-1-1 in that span with five goals allowed and six shutouts in the last 10.

New York's unbeaten start was halted with Tuesday's 4-1 home loss to Winnipeg. The Rangers also started with two road victories and have won 12 of 13 on the road dating to March 8.

The Rangers led the Jets 1-0 after Mats Zuccarello's first-period goal and outshot the Jets 41-29.

"We had 41 shots so it's not that we didn't have some looks," Derek Stepan said. "We'll have to make adjustments, we'll have to get some guys in front of the goaltender and find ways to score goals. I think our main focus now is obviously to get better as a team and that's something you always strive for."

Zuccarello has three goals in his last three games, while Henrik Lundqvist has played every game in goal and will start again.

Lundqvist is 4-6-2 with a 3.81 GAA and .878 save percentage in 13 regular-season contests at the Bell Centre for his worst numbers in any venue where he's appeared at least five times. It's only gotten worse over an 0-4-1 span with a 4.30 GAA.

Preview: Blues (2-1) at Oilers (0-3)
Date: October 15, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

A second early season matchup with the St. Louis Blues likely won't solve the Edmonton Oilers' woes.

The Oilers return home and will go for their first win Thursday night against a Blues team they've seen little success against recently.

Edmonton (0-3-0) didn't salvage a point from a three-game road trip to begin the season, which included a 3-1 loss in the opener at St. Louis. The Blues (2-1-0) used third-period goals from Robby Fabbri and Troy Brouwer to notch a seventh consecutive win in the series.

The Oilers were outscored 30-11 in those seven games and earned just one point from an overtime loss in November. The struggles stretch back further as Edmonton is 3-17-1 against St. Louis since Dec. 21, 2009.

Points have been hard to come by so far this season too, as the Oilers have been outscored 9-3 while going 1 for 9 on the power play.

"I think our team will score. I really do," coach Todd McLellan told the club's official website. "Once we get a little more rhythm and execution on the power play, get a sense of where we need to be and what we're trying to accomplish, we'll have more opportunities there to score."

Edmonton's 18-year-old center Connor McDavid got his feet wet with his first NHL goal during Tuesday's 4-2 loss at Dallas. He registered his first point of the season by redirecting Andrej Sekera's shot midway through the second period to knot the score at 2.

'Connor getting his goal was a nice reward,' McLellan said. 'I know that he's been squeezing the stick tight and I'm sure that he's felt some pressure to score.'

Colton Parayko had twice the fun Tuesday, scoring his first two NHL goals in St. Louis' 4-3 win at Calgary. The defenseman has logged 54 minutes, 18 seconds of ice time so far for coach Ken Hitchcock.

'He's got poise with the puck and for a big man, he's got foot-speed,' Hitchcock said. 'He has great composure and he's getting better every day.'

While one youngster excelled on the ice, another might not see it again for some time for St. Louis. Hitchcock announced Monday that the 20-year-old Fabbri has been diagnosed with a concussion from an elbow he took to the head during Saturday's 3-2 loss to Minnesota.

Fabbri played three more shifts at center after the concussion but left in the first period and did not return. Hitchcock gave no timeline for his return.

"We're going to miss Robby," Hitchcock told the team's official website. "We're going to miss his spunk, but (Scottie Upshall and Scott Gomez) will be excellent replacements."

Upshall scored against Calgary, while Gomez has yet to play this season.

The Blues will look to add to their nine-goal total against the goaltender they beat in the opener. Cam Talbot took the loss after allowing two goals while stopping 28 shots.

Jake Allen will make his second start this season and fourth of his career against the Oilers. Allen suffered the loss against Minnesota, surrendering three goals while making 16 saves. He is 2-1-0 against Edmonton despite a .789 save percentage.

Preview: Sharks (3-0) at Devils (0-3)
Date: October 16, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

As the San Jose Sharks thrive thus far under Peter DeBoer, his former employer has yet to reap any rewards from its offseason coaching change.

When DeBoer returns to the Prudential Center Friday night, he'll be bringing in an unbeaten Sharks team aiming to keep the New Jersey Devils winless under new coach John Hynes.

The Devils fired DeBoer in December, 36 games into a third consecutive non-playoff season that followed an unexpected Stanley Cup Finals run he oversaw in 2012. The 47-year-old was hired by San Jose (3-0-0) in May in hopes of turning around a franchise viewed as having underachieved in recent years under Todd McClellan.

The short-term results have been terrific, with the Sharks producing a league-best plus-11 goal differential in victories over Los Angeles, Anaheim and Washington.

DeBoer isn't the only newcomer making an impact. Goaltender Martin Jones has turned aside 77 of 78 shots in the three wins and posted a second straight shutout when San Jose began a four-game East Coast trip with Tuesday's 5-0 victory over the Alex Ovechkin-less Capitals.

Jones, a backup in Los Angeles the past two seasons and acquired from Boston in June, owns a 178:11 scoreless streak that is 45 seconds shy of surpassing teammate Alex Stalock's team record set in January 2014.

DeBoer said he plans to start Stalock either Friday or in Saturday's game at the New York Islanders.

While it's uncertain whether Jones draws a fourth straight start, it appears unlikely Logan Couture will be in Friday's lineup after the center injured his right foot in Thursday's practice. Couture, second among Sharks players in goals (27) and points (67) last season, was spotted on crutches wearing a protective boot after being helped off the ice.

Couture has just one assist but nine other San Jose players have notched goals, with the fourth line of Chris Tierney, Mike Brown and Barclay Goodrow accounting for two scores against Washington.

"We got great depth contributions (Tuesday)," DeBoer said. "That's part of having a deep lineup is different nights you get different lines that are contributing, and that's a key to any team having success in this league."

In contrast, New Jersey (0-3-0) has struggled to generate consistent scoring chances, mustering five goals in losing its first three games under Hynes.

The Devils did outshoot Nashville Tuesday but surrendered both a power-play and short-handed goal in a 3-1 home defeat. New Jersey, 0-6-1 in its last seven dating back to last season, is just 7 for 11 on the penalty kill.

"I think this is a desperate time for us, even if it is the beginning of the season," defenseman Adam Larsson said. "We want to win and get a good feeling in here."

Cory Schneider missed Tuesday's game as his wife gave birth to the couple's first child but is expected to start Friday. He owns a 3.39 goals-against average in 10 starts against San Jose but made 34 saves in a 5-2 road win on January 19 that stopped New Jersey's four-game series losing streak.

The Sharks have won three straight at the Prudential Center. Couture and Joe Pavelski each had a goal and two assists in a 4-2 victory there on Oct. 18, 2014.
