Preview: Bucks (7-12) at Pistons (10-9)
Date: December 04, 2015 7:30 PM EDT

Greg Monroe won his battle at center against Andre Drummond the last time they met, and they'll match up again in his first game back in Detroit.

Monroe will try to help the Milwaukee Bucks end a seven-game road losing streak Friday night in his return to the Motor City against Drummond and the Pistons.

Monroe spent his first five seasons with the Pistons before signing a three-year, $50 million contract in July. He downplayed facing his former team when Milwaukee won 109-88 at home Nov. 23, the Bucks' fourth straight win in this series.

"I'm going to come in with the same focus," he said. "That is do what I need to do to help my team win on that night. They just happen to be the only other team I have played for."

Milwaukee (7-12) would like to see a repeat of his effort from the last meeting in which Monroe had 20 points and 13 rebounds while Drummond finished with 15 and 15.

Drummond made 6 of 14 from the field for what remains his worst shooting effort since the season's first week. Monroe's knowledge of facing the big man in practice certainly helped.

"We just tried to be physical," said Bucks guard Khris Middleton, also a Detroit teammate of Drummond's in 2012-13. "We know he doesn't like contact. Once he misses a couple, he is going to get down on himself and start forcing tough shots. Greg did a great job of just making him shoot tough shots and not letting him get to his right hand."

Drummond leads the NBA with 16.7 rebounds per game and 17 double-doubles.

Detroit (10-9) has two starters looking to make amends for poor performances from the last meeting.

Ersan Ilyasova, who spent his first seven seasons with the Bucks before being traded to the Pistons in the offseason, missed all seven shots for his first scoreless effort as a starter in two seasons. Point guard Reggie Jackson was held to a season-low seven points on 3-of-11 shooting to go with seven assists.

The Pistons would like to see Jackson perform like he has in consecutive victories in which he has totaled 65 points and 24 assists. He scored 34 and had a season-high 16 assists in Wednesday's 127-122 overtime victory over Phoenix.

"When he's doing that, when he's driving and attacking and finding people, I mean we can get good shots pretty much at will," coach Stan Van Gundy said.

It's not clear who the Bucks will start at point guard after Jerryd Bayless did not play for the first time in Wednesday's 95-70 loss at San Antonio. Tyler Ennis got the nod, finishing with four points and three assists, and coach Jason Kidd said benching Bayless was not a disciplinary move.

'No, I just didn't want to play him tonight,' Kidd said. 'I wanted to look at Tyler tonight.'

Michael Carter-Williams was the starting point guard the last time these teams met. He's shot 28.1 percent in the past five games.

The Bucks shot a season-low 33.8 percent Wednesday and finished with their lowest point total in two seasons. They haven't won on the road since beating New York 99-92 on Nov. 6.

Giannis Antetokounmpo averages a team-high 16.1 points, but he's totaled 24 in the past three games and shot 5 for 18 in the last two.

Preview: Lakers (3-15) at Hawks (12-9)
Date: December 04, 2015 8:00 PM EDT

The Los Angeles Lakers have a chance to win consecutive games for the first time in more than nine months. Though the Atlanta Hawks' last winning streak was much more recent, it feels like an eternity ago.

Kobe Bryant finally delivered a performance that matches up with his closing legacy, and he will try to make it two in a row when the Lakers visit the slumping Hawks Friday night.

Washington was the second stop on Bryant's farewell tour after he announced his impending retirement prior to a season-long eight-game road trip. He turned back the clock by scoring 12 of his season-high 31 points in the fourth quarter during Wednesday's 108-104 victory over the Wizards.

It snapped the Lakers' seven-game losing streak and eight-game skid on the road. It also puts them in position to win two straight for the first time since winning three in a row Feb. 22-27.

Battling an ailing body and shooting woes, Bryant will look for his second straight standout game - something that hasn't happened yet this season.

He made 10 of 24 shots against the Wizards and 4 of 11 from 3-point range, but he hasn't made at least 40 percent of his shots and 33 percent of his 3-pointers in consecutive games. He only has those shooting numbers on two occasions total.

In Tuesday's 103-91 loss at Philadelphia to open the road trip, Bryant finished 7 of 26 from the field while making 4 of 17 from beyond the arc. Even after Wednesday, he was still last of 115 qualifying players in field goal percentage (31.1) and last of 101 in 3-point percentage (22.2).

'We are all just having fun and going out there and trying to play with the right energy,' Bryant said. 'It seems like it has pumped some life into us.'

Atlanta could use a similar jolt.

The Hawks (12-9) lost three straight in mid-November and have traded wins and losses in eight games since. They have dropped seven of 11 and haven't won two in a row since a seven-game run Oct. 29-Nov. 7 - a spurt that had them looking like the title contender they were a year ago.

However, after opening a three-game homestand with a 106-100 win over Oklahoma City, Atlanta squandered a big second-half lead in Wednesday's 96-86 loss to Toronto, snapping a three-game home winning streak.

The Hawks led by as much as 17 in the third quarter before the Raptors rallied. Atlanta allowed a season-high 39 points in the final quarter and lost for the first time in 36 home games when leading to begin the fourth.

'It's just unacceptable on our part,' center Al Horford said. 'We just relaxed in the second half as a team, especially in the fourth quarter. It's just disappointing.'

Horford's 12 points helped him match a career high with 21 consecutive double-digit games, but Atlanta finished with season lows in points and field goal percentage (36.7). The Hawks scored fewer than 90 points for the second time in three games while shooting worse than 30 percent from 3-point range (29.6) for the third time in five.

After calling the Lakers "a circus" following their loss to the 76ers, guard Nick Young did not play against the Wizards.

Preview: Rockets (8-11) at Mavericks (11-8)
Date: December 04, 2015 8:30 PM EDT

Off to sluggish starts, the Dallas Mavericks and Houston Rockets are starting to show signs of coming around.

With both teams coming off wins, they meet for the second time this season Friday night at the American Airlines Center.

Houston (8-11) is looking for its fourth victory in five games thanks in large part to the resurgence of its potent attack. The Rockets have averaged 111.3 points in the past four after scoring 97.0 over the previous eight.

Balance has been the key during that stretch. Houston defeated New Orleans 108-101 on Wednesday, placing six players in double figures and getting at least six points from everyone who played. At least five players have reached double digits in each of the past three games, with the reserves averaging 42.3 in those.

That's well above the bench's season average of 26.8 - among the lowest marks in the league.

"This group, the pieces are there, the talent is there. They're working at it and we've been waiting for it to click," interim coach J.B. Bickerstaff said.

Point guard Ty Lawson, struggling in his first season with the Rockets, scored 12 points and added six assists. He's gone 8 for 14 from the floor over the last two games.

'It feels a little bit more comfortable,' he said. 'I'm trying to find my way in the offense. I don't have the ball as much as I normally do, but I am figuring it out day by day.'

The Rockets blocked seven shots, led by three from Dwight Howard - who also had 16 rebounds - and scored 27 points off 23 turnovers.

Dallas (11-8) has played better than Houston in the early going, but the Mavericks had dropped three straight before winning two of their last three.

Wesley Matthews helped Dallas to its latest victory, 115-112 in overtime at Portland on Tuesday. The former Trail Blazer scored 18 points, while Deron Williams had 30 points, eight assists and six rebounds and Dirk Nowitzki scored 28.

Dallas also got 14 points and 21 rebounds from Zaza Pachulia. The veteran center is averaging a career-high 10.2 rebounds along with 11.1 points.

'He's just real smart in there. He uses his body and he's a little more athletic than he appears,' coach Rick Carlisle said. 'He's quick to the ball and his strength and timing is really uncanny.'

The Mavs outscored the Blazers 9-3 to open the extra period, showing more energy late in a matchup of teams playing on back-to-back nights.

"It was a game on the road and the second night of a back-to-back. We had a lead early, lost it, and then we just never really found a good rhythm until the end," Williams told the team's official website. "I think that says a lot about our team and about the fight we have.

"I thought it was a great team win for us. We had a lot of guys that stepped up and played huge tonight. Of course, Dirk's night. But if you look at Zaza, Wes and Ray (Felton), we had so many guys that came in and played big minutes for us. And it was a huge win for us."

Williams has scored at least 20 points four times in the past seven games after not reaching the mark at all in his first 11.

Dallas was without guard J.J. Barea for a third straight game because of a sprained right ankle.

The Mavericks won the first matchup of the season 110-98 at Houston on Nov. 14. The Rockets, though, have taken four of six meetings.

Preview: Cavaliers (13-5) at Pelicans (4-15)
Date: December 04, 2015 9:30 PM EDT

The last time Cleveland won in New Orleans, a 26-year-old LeBron James scored 38 points and was still months away from claiming a Miami address.

His return last season resulted in an even bigger offensive performance, though there was no victory against the emerging Pelicans. This New Orleans team seems incapable of overcoming that kind of individual stat line as it tries to end a four-game skid with a fifth straight home win over the Cavaliers on Friday night.

The Pelicans earned a split of last season's two-game series with a 119-114 home win Dec. 12 despite James scoring 41 points. In five games at New Orleans dating to Cleveland's win there on March 24, 2010, he's averaging 32.0 points and shooting 61.0 percent while hitting 13 of 23 from 3-point range.

Things have been more modest lately for James, who's averaging 22.2 points on 43.9 percent shooting in his last six but has a chance to break out against New Orleans.

The Pelicans (4-15) are allowing a league-high 109.1 points per game, and they're finding ways to give up points and lose even when they limit the opposition's shooting.

In Wednesday's 108-101 loss at Houston, they held the Rockets to 41.4 percent but turned the ball over a season-worst 23 times, yielding a season-high 27 points off turnovers. It's taken New Orleans two games to produce 16 points off turnovers.

"When we needed a basket, we had turnovers," said Anthony Davis, who had 29 points and 13 rebounds. "It was tough and we just have to do a better job of taking care of the ball. They came up with some stops and ... converted them on the other end."

A season after finishing eight games over .500 and making the playoffs for the first time in four years, New Orleans finds itself 11 under .500 and flirting with the bottom of the Western Conference.

The Pelicans are hoping Tyreke Evans can help send things back in the right direction. The starting guard has played two games in his return from a knee injury that cost him the start of the season and is averaging 15.0 points and 9.0 assists. He also had 31 points and 10 assists in that home win over Cleveland nearly a year ago.

"I feel alright. I'm a little sore, but this was a back-to-back and it made it tougher," Evans said. "I'm just happy to be out there, to help my team and compete and try to work my way back and get things right."

On a smaller scale, the Cavaliers (13-5) are also seeking some improvement after Tuesday's 97-85 home loss to Washington. James had 24 points and 13 rebounds, but the team shot 33.7 percent and had 19 turnovers. James was responsible for nine - one shy of his career high from 2005.

"To start off, they beat us from the beginning to the end," said James, who will return to Miami on Saturday night to complete a back-to-back set.

"With the 10-0 run in the first quarter, to the 7-0 run in the third quarter, they beat us in every facet of the game. Their pace, their speed and their ability to get the ball up the floor really quickly caused us problems tonight."

Cleveland has shot 37.1 percent and committed 39 turnovers in the last two games. J.R. Smith has been a significant part of the problem, going 6 for 27 in that time. The Cavs also aren't getting anything out of Timofey Mozgov. In three games back from a shoulder strain, the ailing center, who also underwent offseason knee surgery, is 4 for 19.

Armadillo: Saturday's six-pack

-- Arizona gave Zack Greinke $206M for six years; more on this next week.

-- UNLV 80, Oregon 69-- Rebels are headed to the top 25.

-- BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall bolts for Virginia- interesting career change.

-- Browns are on fifth coach in eight years; Steelers have had three since 1969.

-- Canisius 96, Monmouth 86-- Bubble bursts for Hawks as MAAC play starts.

-- Get well soon, Sandy Alderson-- Mets' GM starts chemo next week after he was diagnosed with cancer.

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Things I'm looking for this weekend.......

13) Seattle has led in 4th quarter of every game this year; they're on road for first time in five weeks. Minnesota has to win to stay atop NFC North after the Miracle in Motown Thursday night. QBs have similar style; this'll be a very good game.

12) Southern Mississippi won its last six games, scoring 48.2 ppg to get to C-USA title game with 9-3 record after being 4-32 SU the last three years; Western Kentucky won its last four games, scoring 50.5 ppg. USM is 9-2 vs spread this year, 4-1 as an underdog.

11) Houston won last four games, allowing 8.8 ppg; they're tied for first in division, would be Wild Card if playoffs started today. Buffalo just played three straight on road; they're not out of Wild Card race with win here.

10) Temple is 5-0 as an underdog this year, winning four, with only loss 24-20 to Notre Dame- their coach hasn't been mentioned for any of the openings yet. Houston managed to keep coach Herman away frm the SEC; this should be a fun game. .

9) Chiefs were + in turnovers seven games in row- they're +14 in turnovers their last five games. winning/covering all five, but defensive star Houston is out here and OL is banged up. Oakland is still in contention; they're 5-2 vs spread as underdogs.

8) Stanford won five of its last seven games with USC; they beat the Trojans 41-31 (+9.5) in LA Sept 19. USC changed coaches since then, has played better since Helton has been in charge. Stanford played Oregon/Cal/Notre Dame last three weeks, not the easiest stretch of games for a college team.

7) Arizona visits Gonzaga with big man Tarczewski (foot) out; good chance for the Zags to get some revenge for an OT loss in Tucson last year.

6) San Diego State lost at home to South Alabama Sept 19; they're won eight games in row since its 1-3 start, with all eight wins by 14+ points. Air Force won five of its last six games- they're 3-1 as an underdog.

5) Jets are +14 in turnovers in their six wins, -13 in five losses; they're 4-2 in Swamp this year- they covered one of last five games overall. Both teams call this stadium its home- jets are lucky it is a "Giant home game" giving them nine home games this year, plus a neutral field game in London that was a Miami home game originally.

4) Iowa is an underdog despite its 12-0 record; Michigan State won its two biggest games of the year without leading either one until the final play. Hawkeyes haven't won a bowl game since 2010; winner here probably makes the national playoff.

3) Indy is 4-0 when 40-year old backup Hasselbeck starts; they won last three games, covered last four- they're 5-0 vs spread as an underdog this year, but are 3-16 in last 19 games vs Steelers, losing 13 of last 15 visits to Steel City.

2) Alabama won SEC title game in '12/'14; they won last three games with Florida by average score of 37-12. Lot of dominos in coaching carousel are going to fall when this game ends. If Bama wins national title, will Saban go back to NFL?

1) Broncos won seven of last eight games with San Diego, is 2-0 with Osweiler as the starting QB; they've won last four visits to Qualcomm. Chargers snapped its skid last week after six losses in row- they're 0-8 if they score less than 30 points.

Kings C Cauley-Stein out with finger injury

Sacramento Kings center Willie Cauley-Stein will miss four to six weeks after suffering an open dislocation of his right index finger.

Cauley-Stein was injured during Thursday's game against the Boston Celtics in Mexico City.

Cauley-Stein was the sixth overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft and is averaging 4.8 points and 5.2 rebounds.

NBA roundup: Hawks thump Lakers

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Hawks blew a big first-half lead while losing their previous game and weren't going to let the same thing happen against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Al Horford scored 16 points to lead five double-figure scorers and added nine rebounds as the Hawks took a 19-point lead in the second quarter and then held off a Lakers rally for 100-87 victory Friday night.

Kobe Bryant, who had scored 31 points Wednesday at Washington to help the Lakers snap a seven-game losing streak, scored 14 points in the third stop of his retirement road show while shooting only 4-for-19, including 2-for-10 from behind the 3-point arc.

Pistons 102, Bucks 95

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Marcus Morris and Reggie Jackson scored 23 points apiece and Andre Drummond delivered 17 points and 23 rebounds as Detroit won its third straight.

Morris added four rebounds and three assists while Jackson had five assists for the Pistons. Power forward Ersan Ilyasova added 13 points and eight rebounds against his former team.

Drummond has five games with 20 or more rebounds this season. The rest of the league combined had three entering Friday's action.

Knicks 108, Nets 91

NEW YORK -- New York won the first battle of the boroughs this season, defeating rival at Madison Square Garden.

Brooklyn lost its seventh straight game on the road, their longest slide since ending the 2010-11 with seven losses.

Carmelo Anthony paced the Knicks with 28 points and rookie Kristaps Porzingis posted his 10th double-double this season with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Wizards 109, Suns 106

WASHINGTON -- Bradley Beal scored a season-high 34 points and Washington fought back in the second half to beat Phoenix.

John Wall had 17 points and nine assists for the Wizards, who had lost five of their previous six games.

Eric Bledsoe scored 22 points and guard Brandon Knight had 19 for the Suns.

Rockets 100, Mavericks 96

DALLAS -- James Harden poured in 18 of his game-high 25 points, including a backbreaking step-back jumper with 7.4 seconds, which sealed the win over Dallas.

Harden bounced back from a 3-for-12 shooting first-half with 11 points in the third quarter, plus two huge baskets and a terrific assist in crunch time that inched the slow-starting Rockets a little closer to .500 at 9-11.

The Rockets also won for the first time this season when Harden did not take at least 10 free throws.

Pelicans 114, Cavaliers 108, OT

NEW ORLEANS -- Anthony Davis shook off an injury to his lower left leg to score 31 points, including six in overtime, to overcome a 23-point fourth quarter by LeBron James and lift New Orleans to a victory..

Davis added 12 rebounds and four steals as the Pelicans snapped a four-game losing streak and recorded their fifth consecutive home victory over the Cavaliers, who dropped their second straight.

The Pelicans survived in overtime after the Cavaliers erased an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter. James exploded for 23 of his game-high 37 points in the fourth, including a go-ahead scoop layup around Davis with 30.5 seconds left.

Preview: Nuggets (7-13) at 76ers (1-19)
Date: December 05, 2015 1:00 PM EDT

The Denver Nuggets' Emmanuel Mudiay and the Philadelphia 76ers' T.J. McConnell are the top rookies in the NBA in assists, though they entered the league in vastly different ways.

These point guards will meet for the first time Saturday as McConnell's club will once again be without Jahlil Okafor when it hosts Mudiay and the Nuggets.

Mudiay is a native of Congo who played high school basketball in the United States and one season professionally in China before Denver (7-13) selected him with the No. 7 pick. He is averaging 6.1 assists while enduring growing pains as one of the league's worst shooters at 31.0 percent.

McConnell was undrafted after spending two years apiece in college at Duquesne and Arizona. The guard, averaging 6.0 assists, started 13 games before coming off the bench for the last four.

Okafor will complete his two-game, team-imposed suspension Wednesday after the release of a second video provided details of his fight in Boston he hadn't revealed to the club. The center, averaging a team-high 17.2 points and 8.1 rebounds, sat out that night's 99-87 loss at New York.

'Today we learned more and the thing I do say is when I spent time with Jahlil in his room today, he is ashamed, he's embarrassed and this has caught him off guard," coach Brett Brown said.

The 76ers (1-19) shot 37.2 percent without Okafor one night after their first win, 103-91 over the Los Angeles Lakers. Hollis Thompson scored 13 points as Philadelphia never led and trailed by as many as 23 points

"We couldn't make a shot," Brown said. "I thought we had good looks. I thought across the board, I don't fault our energy. I thought we scrambled to the end. We just couldn't make some shots. Last night took its toll."

The 76ers recalled guards Tony Wroten and Kendall Marshall from the D-League on Friday. Wroten is expected to make his season debut while Marshall is still out after a torn ACL.

The Nuggets ended an eight-game slide with Thursday's 106-105 victory at Toronto. Will Barton scored 22 points off the bench, Danilo Gallinari scored 21 and Mudiay handed out nine assists to help make up for his five points on 2-of-9 shooting.

"Tonight was a great win for us that we needed in the worst way, that's an understatement," coach Michael Malone said.

Denver has only 18 turnovers in the last two games after averaging 21.3 in its previous three. Mudiay averages 3.9 turnovers per game to rank among the league's worst, though that figure is down to 2.8 over his last five games - a stretch in which he is shooting 24.2 percent.

The Nuggets have been hurt by poor shooting of Philadelphia area natives Randy Foye and Jameer Nelson, with both below 25.0 percent on 3-pointers.

"The challenge for both of those guys is if you are struggling to make shots like they are, find a way to contribute somewhere else," Malone said.

Guard Gary Harris could return from a four-game absence with a concussion while forward Kenneth Faried sat out Thursday with a recurring ankle injury.

Preview: Warriors (20-0) at Raptors (12-8)
Date: December 05, 2015 5:00 PM EDT

The Toronto Raptors gave the Golden State Warriors one of their toughest tests so far, rallying from a big deficit to have a chance to take the lead in the final seconds.

They at least came away with an idea of what it will take to slay the NBA's seemingly invincible juggernaut.

Golden State's seven-game road trip continues Saturday north of the border, where the Raptors hope to avoid yet another slow start as they attempt to stop the third-longest winning streak in league history at 24.

The Warriors (20-0) appeared to be on their way to another easy victory Nov. 17 against Toronto, but a 16-point halftime lead dwindled to one late in the fourth quarter.

Kyle Lowry was called for pinning Andre Iguodala's hand under his arm as Iguodala attempted to track down DeMar DeRozan with 15 seconds left, and Stephen Curry nailed four free throws from there - the last of his 37 points - to help Golden State escape with a 115-110 win.

"They are the champs and they've got the MVP," Lowry said. "There's nothing good that can come out of a loss. You can learn some things from it, but at the end of the day it's still a loss."

That was just about as close as anyone has come to beating Golden State after trailing by 15 over the past two seasons. The Warriors are 74-0 when building a 15-point lead since the start of 2014-15 - playoffs included - but Toronto may have discovered a few areas it can expose to finish the job.

The Raptors (12-8) shot 39 free throws - the most allowed by the Warriors this season - as Lowry and DeRozan got to the line a combined 25 times. Toronto also forced 20 turnovers that it turned into a season high-tying 24 points, and it held Golden State to 2 for 11 from 3-point range after halftime.

"That's their bread and butter," DeRozan said. "Take that away, try to make everything else tough on them."

Coach Luke Walton spoke after a rare Warriors practice session Friday, and it sounded like he'd been studying that box score.

"Our main focus going into this game has to be keeping them off the free-throw line," Walton said. "We've got to quit turning the ball over. That's not just against Toronto, that's against everybody."

Golden State had 20 or more turnovers 11 times all of last season but has already reached that mark seven times. It happened again Wednesday in Charlotte, but Curry's sixth 40-point game, a plus-12 rebounding margin and 16-of-34 shooting from 3 helped ensure those wouldn't be too costly in a 116-99 win.

The Warriors are the first team since the 1969-70 Knicks to win their first 10 road games, and have matched baseball's 1884 St. Louis Maroons for the best start to a season among America's four major pro leagues.

'It doesn't even sound right,' Curry said. 'In the NBA, with so many good players and good teams, to be able to put on a run like this is special. We don't always play our best but we find ways to win."

Curry's typically been on top of his game against Toronto, with his 28.7-point average and 54.0 percent shooting in 11 games both registering as his best versus any opponent.

The Raptors have lost their last two at home after falling to Denver 106-105 on Thursday, and a slow start was again the issue. Toronto fell behind 29-19 after one quarter - the fourth straight game it's been down after 12 minutes - and trailed by as many as 18, all of which makes for an unhappy Dwane Casey.

"We can't wait to get our teeth kicked in before we start to play," Casey said.

Golden State has led by an average of 10.5 points after one quarter in its last five games.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

Westgate Super Contest (1,727 entrants-- prize pool is $2.5M)
six most popular picks in Week 13 season record: 35-36-2

6) Broncos -4 (366)-- Brock's (Osweiler) Bandwagon is picking up steam.

5) Chiefs -2.5 (414)-- Kansas City looking to win/cover sixth in a row.

4) Giants +2.5 (424)-- Both teams are playing in their home stadium.

3) Saints +7 (432)-- Still lot of doubters for unbeaten Carolina.

2) Texans +3.5 (439)-- Dome team in Buffalo in December........

1) Seahawks even (484)-- 6-5 Seattle led in fourth quarter in every game.

**********

Armadillo: Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a sports Saturday.....

13) Michigan State 16, Iowa 13-- Spartans scored with 0:27 left to win Big 14 title and a likely spot in the national championship playoff. State's three best wins all came in game's final minute, over Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa- a memorable season.

12) Bowling Green 34, Northern Illinois 14-- That was the good news last night; now the bad news- coach Dino Babers bolted Bowling Green for Syracuse, which was #117 in passing this year. Babers' Falcons were #1, albeit in a lesser league. It is second time in three years Bowling Green had a winning coach skip town-- Dave Clawson bolted for Wake Forest two years ago, where he has yet to have any success.

11) Texas 23, Baylor 17-- Bears actually ran out of QBs, were down to #4 guy who throws the ball like a punter; still, they were down 20-0, rallied and had ball with shot to win before RB fumbled on last drive. It makes me want to puke that three 5-7 teams are going to bowl games- simply put, there are too many bowl games.

10) Alabama 29, Florida 15-- How did the Gators win so many games with that kid playing QB? Not only is he a terrible passer, he got suspended earlier in year when he flunked a drug test. The other QB got suspended for using PEDs- if they made a movie with that storyline, nobody would believe it.

9) Warriors 112, Raptors 109-- Toronto had chance to hand Golden State its first loss, but missed couple of key FTs in last minute; Warriors are 21-0, the best start for any team in any pro sport- they play in Brooklyn today. I'm seriously wondering if at some point, losing a game will become a relief, so they can give Curry/Thompson bit of a rest? Its a very long season- they need to be somewhat fresh for the playoffs.

8) Couple of horrendous home losses that will hurt on Selection Sunday:
South Dakota 85, Minnesota 81, double OT
Missouri State 64, Oklahoma State 63

7) Clemson 45, North Carolina 37-- Tigers were up 14-9 in first half when punter decided to run for a first down on 4th and 14 and failed miserably. Dabo Swinney then went off on the kid, throwing a Mike Dtika-like tirade in the kid's face on the sideline.

The punter is an academic All-American who used to be a walk-on-- if they had lost this game, he might have been a walk-home punter.

6) More shocking than Zack Greinke's $34.3M a year deal is Jeff Samardzija somehow snookering the Giants into giving him $18M a year for five years- he was AWFUL last year, I mean terrible and I like the guy after his stint with the A's in 2014.

Johnny Cueto's agent had to be laughing his butt off when he saw those numbers.

5) Georgetown 79, Syracuse 72-- Hoyas spanked Syracuse in first game of a 9-game suspension for Jim Boeheim, which will carry into ACC play. Good news is that rest of this month is a parade of stiffs for Syracuse, so they'll right the ship soon.

4) Arizona football coach Rich Rodriguez turned South Carolina down Saturday night for its head coaching job- media types were surprised. Following Steve Spurrier is not a good idea-- ask Ron Zook or Barry Wilson, who replaced the Ol' Ball Coach at Florida, Duke-- neither one lasted too long.

3) "They wanted the game more" was one TV analyst's description of Arizona's upset win at Gonzaga Saturday. How the hell does he know who wanted what? It is very simple; Arizona got down big early, then played really well in the second half and pulled an upset. It is lazy and a cliche to just say "they wanted the game more".

2) Atlanta Falcons are getting a new stadium in downtown Atlanta; the place they play in now, the Georgia Dome is only 23 years old. Why do they need a new stadium?

1) Arizona State 67, Texas A&M 54-- Solid win for Bobby Hurley's team over the 18th-ranked Aggies- they were up 25 in second half. At this point, Hurley has to be the odds-on favorite to replace Mike Krzyzewski at Duke when that day comes.
