WASHINGTON (AP) Mike Leake outpitched 2016 NL Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer, Stephen Piscotty homered and had five RBIs, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 6-1 on Wednesday to avoid a three-game sweep.

Leake (1-1) gave up four hits, struck out seven and walked none over seven shutout innings. The right-hander allowed hits to the first two batters, then picked off a runner before getting 19 straight outs. The streak ended when Daniel Murphy singled with two outs in the seventh.

By that time, St. Louis had taken a 3-0 lead against Scherzer, who yielded only one earned run. He did, however, throw three wild pitches - two in the third inning - after tossing only two all last year while going 20-7.

Scherzer (1-1) allowed three runs and four hits in six innings. He struck out 10, the 50th time in his career he reached double figures in strikeouts.

WHITE SOX 2, INDIANS 1

CLEVELAND (AP) - Derek Holland held Cleveland hitless until the sixth inning and late fill-in Matt Davidson had a two-run single for Chicago.

Holland (1-1) gave up a leadoff double to Francisco Lindor in the sixth. The White Sox lefty struck out four, walked four and threw 101 pitches in six innings.

Holland is 4-0 with a 1.02 ERA in five starts at Progressive Field. He is 6-1 with a 2.35 ERA in 10 career starts against Cleveland.

David Robertson pitched the ninth for his first save.

Davidson was added to the lineup when third baseman Todd Frazier was scratched with flu-like symptoms.

Danny Salazar (0-1) went six innings and struck out 11, matching a career high.

YANKEES 8, RAYS 4

NEW YORK (AP) - Jordan Montgomery showed power and poise in his major league debut after allowing Rickie Weeks' two-run homer in the first inning, and New York rallied past sloppy Tampa Bay to get back to .500.

New York's Brett Gardner and Weeks both left the game after a collision at first base in the sixth inning. Both fell to the field as Chase Headley came home with the go-ahead run.

Gardner was diagnosed with a bruised jaw and strained neck, and Weeks with neck and right shoulder soreness.

New York rebounded from a 3-0, fifth-inning deficit and won its third straight after a 1-4 start. Aaron Judge homered for the third straight game, a long drive to center, and had three RBIs. Errors by shortstop Tim Beckham and Cedeno led to four unearned runs.

Bryan Mitchell (1-0) got the win in relief of Montgomery, who struck out seven in 4 2/3 innings. Aroldis Chapman earned his first save.

Jumbo Diaz (0-1) took the loss.

TIGERS 5, TWINS 3

DETROIT (AP) - Andrew Romine hit his first career grand slam and Detroit rallied from an early three-run deficit to beat Minnesota.

The Tigers trailed 3-0 before scoring five runs in the fourth inning, with Romine delivering the key blow.

Michael Fulmer (1-0) allowed three runs and four hits in six innings, striking out seven. Detroit's maligned bullpen pitched three hitless innings, with Alex Wilson working the final two for his third career save and first this season.

Detroit has won five of six to take sole possession of first place in the AL Central.

Kyle Gibson (0-1) gave up five runs and four hits in four innings. Brian Dozier led off the game with a homer and Joe Mauer added a two-run single in the third for the Twins, but that was their final hit.

The Tigers have homered in their first eight games for the first time in franchise history.

PADRES 6, ROCKIES 0

DENVER (AP) - Zach Lee and four relievers combined on a three-hitter, Ryan Schimpf homered as part of a four-run first inning and San Diego blanked Colorado.

Lee (1-0) earned his first major league win in his second career start. The other one came on July 25, 2015, with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The righty was filling in for Luis Perdomo, who went on the disabled list before the game with shoulder inflammation.

Lee allowed two hits in 5 1/3 innings before the Padres' bullpen completed the first shutout of the Rockies at Coors Field since July 2015.

It was a rough first inning for Denver native Kyle Freeland (1-1), who allowed an RBI double to Wil Myers, a run-scoring single to Yangervis Solarte and a two-run homer to Schimpf.

REDS 9, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Reds rookie Amir Garrett threw another gem, taking a shutout into the seventh inning and leading Cincinnati over Pittsburgh for a three-game sweep.

Garrett (2-0), the former St. John's basketball player, blanked the Pirates until David Freese hit a two-run homer.

Garrett gave up five hits, walked none and struck out five in 6 2/3 innings. In his major league debut last week, the 24-year-old lefty pitched six scoreless innings to win at St. Louis.

Cincinnati has won seven of eight since losing to the Phillies on opening day.

Jose Peraza, Eugenio Suarez and Tucker Barnhart each had three of the 15 hits for the Reds, who didn't homer for the first time this season.

Peraza had a two-run double to cap a four-run fourth against Ivan Nova (1-1).

The Pirates were outscored 21-5 in the series and were hitless in 23 at-bats with runners in scoring position.

METS 5, PHILLIES 4

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Zack Wheeler earned his first win in 2 1/2 years, Michael Conforto hit a solo homer and New York held off Philadelphia to complete a three-game sweep.

Yoenis Cespedes and Asdrubal Cabrera each drove in two runs for the Mets. Wheeler (1-1) left with a shutout intact but was charged with three runs and four hits over 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander missed the last two seasons following Tommy John surgery and had not won since Sept. 19, 2014, against Atlanta.

Wheeler was pulled with a 5-0 lead and the bases loaded in the sixth. Maikel Franco hit the first pitch from Hansel Robles for a grand slam that cut it to 5-4.

Robles and Jerry Blevins combined to get four outs. Fernando Salas worked the eighth and Addison Reed finished for his third save.

Phillies starter Vince Velasquez (0-2) allowed five runs and five hits in five innings.

BREWERS 2, BLUE JAYS 0

TORONTO (AP) - Chase Anderson and two relievers combined on a four-hitter, Jonathan Villar homered and Milwaukee handed Toronto its fifth straight loss.

The last-place Blue Jays are off to the worst start in team history at 1-7.

Anderson (1-0) allowed three hits in seven innings. He walked two and struck out seven. Corey Knebel pitched the eighth and Neftali Feliz finished for his third save.

Domingo Santana doubled in the second and scored on a two-out double by Keon Broxton. Villar hit a leadoff drive in the sixth, his third home run this season.

Marcus Stroman (1-1) pitched a complete game for the Blue Jays, allowing seven hits.

BRAVES 5, MARLINS 4

MIAMI (AP) - Ender Inciarte hit two home runs and Tyler Flowers had a go-ahead single in the ninth inning to help Atlanta break a five-game losing streak by rallying past Miami.

Giancarlo Stanton hit a pair of two-run homers for the Marlins, his first of the year. Freddie Freeman hit his third homer for the Braves.

The Braves went 2-6 on a season-opening trip before heading home to open their new ballpark Friday. They can only hope for the kind of success they've had at Marlins Park, where they're 32-15.

Atlanta also hopes for a glitch-free day at SunTrust Park in the opener against San Diego. The retractable roof at Marlins Park couldn't prevent a 27-minute delay in the fourth inning during a thunderstorm, which caused several banks of lights to go out.

Brandon Phillips walked in the ninth against A.J. Ramos (0-1), advanced on a two-out wild pitch and came home on Flowers' sharp single.

Arodys Vizcaino (1-0) pitched a scoreless eighth, and Jim Johnson worked a perfect ninth for the Braves' first save of the year.

DODGERS 2, CUBS 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Brandon McCarthy pitched four-hit ball over six innings, Andrew Toles hit his first leadoff homer and Los Angeles blanked Chicago after the Cubs received their championship rings.

The Cubs put the finishing touches on a celebration that started when they beat Cleveland in Game 7 last November to win the World Series for the first time since 1908. They raised the banner Monday night and got 14-karat white gold rings with a total of 214 diamonds in a ceremony Wednesday that drew more roars from the fans at Wrigley Field.

But once the game started, there wasn't much to cheer.

Toles gave the Dodgers a quick lead against John Lackey (1-1), who permitted a run and four hits over six innings. Los Angeles added an insurance run in the ninth on a throwing error by catcher Willson Contreras.

McCarthy (2-0), coming off a strong start to beat San Diego, struck out four and walked three. Kenley Jansen worked the ninth for his second save.

ORIOLES 12, RED SOX 5

BOSTON (AP) - Trey Mancini hit two of Baltimore's five home runs, all in the first three innings against Boston.

A night after the Red Sox put up eight runs, the Orioles returned the favor against knuckleballer Steven Wright by tagging him for six in a first inning that included back-to-back homers from Mancini and Jonathan Schoop. Adam Jones and Chris Davis each added a solo shot in the second.

Mancini hit his second home run in the third, marking the first multihomer game of his career. He finished with four RBIs.

Wright (0-1) lasted just 1 1/3 innings, allowing eight runs and eight hits.

Mychal Givens (2-0) won in relief of Ubaldo Jimenez.

ATHLETICS 8, ROYALS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Andrew Triggs pitched six shutout innings, Jed Lowrie drove in three runs and Oakland defeated Kansas City.

Triggs (2-0) scattered four hits and a walk, striking out three. It was the former Royals farmhand's second solid start this season, having allowed one unearned run over 5 1/3 innings against the Angels.

Triggs combined with Ryan Dull to extend Kansas City's scoreless streak to 19 innings before Lorenzo Cain and Eric Hosmer drove in runs against reliever Liam Hendricks in the eighth. Raul Mondesi homered in the ninth.

The A's have won eight in a row over the Royals, six of those coming at Kauffman Stadium - and most of them in romps. Oakland has outscored the Royals 53-15 in the games played in Kansas City.

Jason Hammel (0-1) gave up four runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.

RANGERS 8, ANGELS 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Joey Gallo hit a go-ahead, two-run triple in the fifth, and Texas prevented a third straight late-inning comeback by Los Angeles.

Mike Napoli, Elvis Andrus and Carlos Gomez homered for the Rangers, and A.J. Griffin (1-0) pitched six innings of four-hit ball to pick up his first victory in six starts dating to last September.

A trio of Texas relievers doused the Angels' hopes for a third consecutive victory featuring a rally from a multi-run deficit in the ninth inning.

Mike Trout homered for the Angels, beaten at home for the first time this season after four straight wins. Los Angeles (6-3) lost for just the second time since opening day.

Jesse Chavez (1-1) yielded five runs and five hits before getting chased in the fifth inning in the latest struggle for the Angels' starting rotation.

ASTROS 10, MARINERS 5

SEATTLE (AP) - Jose Altuve hit three singles and drew two walks, helping Houston overcome an early five-run deficit against Seattle.

Four relievers combined for five scoreless innings after Astros starter Mike Fiers got knocked around. Tony Sipp, Brad Peacock (2-0), Luke Gregerson and Jandel Gustave allowed just three hits.

Carlos Beltran drove in three runs for Houston, which trailed 5-0 after three innings.

The Astros scored three times in the seventh off Dan Altavilla (1-1) for a 6-5 lead, with Alex Bregman's RBI double putting them ahead.

Mike Freeman and Taylor Motter homered for the Mariners.

GIANTS 6, DIAMONDBACKS 2

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Matt Cain allowed one run over five-plus innings for his first win since last August in San Francisco's victory against Arizona.

Denard Span had two hits and drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth off Diamondbacks starter Shelby Miller (1-1). Jarrett Parker added a two-run triple to help the Giants win a series for the first time this season.

Cain (1-0) overcame a shaky start and retired 10 of 11 during one stretch. The former Giants ace struck out six before leaving after giving up a leadoff double and a walk to open the sixth. Cory Gearin struck out three straight batters to end the inning.

Cain also helped himself at the plate when he doubled and scored on Span's single in the fifth.

Jake Lamb went 3 for 4 with a walk to extend his hitting streak to nine games for Arizona.

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Some of my favorite movie quotes……

13) “Who’s the u-boat commander?” From Risky Business, when the kid’s father’s Porsche winds up in Lake Michigan, and then in a repair shop to be cleaned up.

12) “I believe in the Church of Baseball. I’ve tried all the major religions, and most of the minor ones. I’ve worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, trees, mushrooms, and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there are 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there are 108 stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance. But it just didn’t work out between us. The Lord laid too much guilt on me. I prefer metaphysics to theology. You see, there’s no guilt in baseball, and it’s never boring.”
Susan Sarandon, from Bull Durham

11) “He’s a great player, but I don’t think we can get him in academically.”
Jerry Tarkanian, playing himself in Blue Chips

10) “In ‘Confessions of a Winning Poker Player,’ Jack King said, ‘Few players recall big pots they have won, strange as it seems, but every player can remember with remarkable accuracy the outstanding tough beats of his career.’ It seems true to me, ‘cause walking in here, I can hardly remember how I built my bankroll, but I can’t stop thinking of how I lost it.”
Matt Damon in Rounders

9) “I guess it comes down to a simple choice; get busy living, or get busy dying.”
Tim Robbins from Shawshank Redemption

8) “……Who cares? I’ll tell you. Me. I’m not your best friend. I’m your only friend. I don’t make anything? I’m making you money. And lest we forget, that’s the only reason any of you became stockholders in the first place. You want to make money! You don’t care if they manufacture wire and cable, fried chicken, or grow tangerines!

You want to make money! I’m the only friend you’ve got. I’m making you money. Take the money. Invest it somewhere else. Maybe, maybe you’ll get lucky and it’ll be used productively. And if it is, you’ll create new jobs and provide a service for the economy and, God forbid, even make a few bucks for yourselves.

And if anybody asks, tell ’em ya gave at the plant. And by the way, it pleases me that I am called “Larry the Liquidator.” You know why, fellow stockholders? Because at my funeral, you’ll leave with a smile on your face and a few bucks in your pocket. Now that’s a funeral worth having!”
Danny DeVito, in Other People’s Money

7) “It’s supposed to be hard. If it wasn’t hard, everyone would do it. The hard… is what makes it great.” Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own

6) “You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to.” Jack Nicholson, from A Few Good Men

5) “Being perfect is not about that scoreboard out there. It’s not about winning. It’s about you and your relationship with yourself, your family and your friends. Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know that you didn’t let them down because you told them the truth. And that truth is you did everything you could. There wasn’t one more thing you could’ve done. Can you live in that moment as best you can, with clear eyes, and love in your heart, with joy in your heart? If you can do that gentleman – you’re perfect!”
Billy Bob Thornton in Friday Night Lights

4) “And you know Steve you get the feeling that Billy Chapel isn’t pitching against left handers, he isn’t pitching against pinch hitters, he isn’t pitching against the Yankees. He’s pitching against time. He’s pitching against the future, against age, and even when you think about his career, against ending. And tonight I think he might be able to use that aching old arm one more time to push the sun back up in the sky and give us one more day of summer.”
The great Vin Scully, from For Love of the Game

3) “GOD LIKES ME! HE REALLY, REALLY, LIKES ME! WHAT A DAY! WHAT A FABULOUS DAY!”
Richard Dreyfuss in Let It Ride

2) “You’re a goddamn quarterback! You know what that means? It’s the top spot, kid. It’s the guy who takes the fall. It’s the guy everybody’s looking at first – the leader of a team – who will support you when they understand you. Who will break their ribs and their noses and their necks for you, because they believe. ‘Cause you make them believe. That’s a quarterback.”
Al Pacino, from Any Given Sunday

1) “Do whats in your heart, son. You’ll be fine.”
Robin Williams, from Good Will Hunting

LEADING OFF: Stars slumping at plate; Gray's fresh haircut
April 12, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

SLUMPING STARS

Trevor Story, Jhonny Peralta, Jose Reyes and Russell Martin are among the big names looking lost at the plate early this season. Story is hitting .129 without a home run, a year after the Rockies' shortstop was the NL rookie of the month for April when he hit 10 homers. Peralta is 3 for 20 with eight strikeouts, and the Cardinals' infielder was benched in the team's latest game. Reyes has been dropped from leadoff to seventh in the Mets' lineup after a prolonged slump. Martin and fellow Blue Jays star Jose Bautista were both in a rut, going a combined 3 for 43 to begin the season.

HAIR PLAY

Jon Gray makes his first start with short hair since the Rockies' right-hander had 8 inches trimmed off for charity. He donated his flowing mane to Locks of Love , which provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children suffering from long-term medical hair loss. ''We'll find another way to be intimidating,'' said Gray, the No. 3 pick in the 2013 draft. On the mound for San Francisco will be bearded ace Madison Bumgarner, looking for his first win this season.

SURPRISING SLUGGERS

The Tigers have homered in their first eight games of a season for the first time in team history. The odd part? They've done it without big boppers Miguel Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Justin Upton connecting even once. Detroit will try to extend the home run streak when it hosts Minnesota. ''We're going to get the bulk of our RBIs from the heart of our lineup when it's all said and done,'' manager Brad Ausmus said. ''You need the contribution of players that aren't quote-unquote run producers to produce runs once in a while.''

THE DAY AFTER

Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner and Tampa Bay's Rickie Weeks are expected to sit out after both got banged up in a heavy-duty collision at first base Wednesday. Gardner passed the concussion protocol, but was diagnosed with a bruised jaw and strained neck. He was excused from the team's welcome home dinner. ''Two Mack Trucks collided,'' New York general manager Brian Cashman said. ''He's going to be sore.'' Weeks had a bone bruise by the shoulder joint and neck soreness. ''That's some pretty good whiplash,'' Rays manager Kevin Cash said.

MLB notebook: Nationals place INF Drew on DL
April 12, 2017

The Washington Nationals placed infielder Stephen Drew on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday with a right hamstring strain.

Drew suffered the injury while running out a ground ball in the fifth inning of Tuesday's game after his cleat caught in the dirt near the batter's box.

"His spike caught when he was leaving the box," manager Dusty Baker said following Washington's 8-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. "I didn't really see it, but I can tell by the look and the grimace on his face that he hurt it pretty badly."

Drew's injury comes three days after starting shortstop Trea Turner strained his right hamstring in Saturday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Turner was placed on the 10-day disabled list Monday

The only other shortstop on Washington's active roster is rookie Wilmer Difo, who made his fourth career start at the position on Tuesday.

--Cincinnati Reds rookie right-hander Rookie Davis was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a bruised right forearm.

Davis was hit by a pitch from Pittsburgh's Jameson Taillon during the fifth inning of Tuesday's 6-2 victory over the Pirates. The 23-year-old Davis did not return to the contest after surrendering one earned run over four innings in his second career start.

Right-hander Barrett Astin was recalled from Triple-A Louisville to fill the roster spot of Davis, who has yet to receive a decision in two appearances this season. Davis has allowed five runs, seven hits and six walks in seven innings in 2017.

Astin will be making his second stint with the Reds this season. The 25-year-old recorded one out against the Philadelphia Phillies in his major league debut on Opening Day.

--Free agent first baseman James Loney signed a minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers.

Loney will report to extended spring training. He went to spring training with the Texas Rangers but did not make the final roster.

Loney has played 11 seasons bouncing from the Dodgers, Rays, Red Sox and Mets.

A career .284 hitter, Loney hit .265 with nine home runs in 100 games with the Mets last season.

MLB roundup: Hicks homers twice in Yankees' win
April 13, 2017

MIAMI -- Travis d'Arnaud blasted an upper-deck solo home run in the top of the 16th inning to lead the New York Mets to a wild 9-8 win over the Miami Marlins on Thursday night at Marlins Park.

The game, which ended at 12:51 a.m. EST, was tied for the fourth longest in Marlins history.

D'Arnaud went 4-for-6 with four RBIs and is hitting .333. He hit his homer to left on the second pitch by Adam Conley, who had been scheduled to start on Friday but was used when the Marlins ran out of relievers.

The Mets, who have won five straight games, were also led by Yoenis Cespedes, who hit two solo homers, and Wilmer Flores, who banged a solo shot. New York's bullpen also starred, pitching 11 1/3 scoreless innings. Miami's Marcell Ozuna hit a grand slam, giving him four homers and 16 RBIs this season. Ozuna ended the game when he hit a long fly out to the warning track in center.

Yankees 3, Rays 2

NEW YORK -- Aaron Hicks homered from both sides of the plate, and his two-run shot in the seventh inning provided the victory for New York.

Yankees starter Luis Severino (1-0) recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts and allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings. Aroldis Chapman tossed a scoreless ninth and notched his second save.

Jesus Sucre had an RBI single and Peter Bourjos homered for the Rays, who were swept at Yankee Stadium for the first time since September 2009.

Orioles 2, Blue Jays 1

TORONTO -- Kevin Gausman pitched six effective innings, Jonathan Schoop and J.J. Hardy had fifth-inning RBIs, and Baltimore sent Toronto to its sixth straight loss.

The Blue Jays (1-8) are off to their worst start in franchise history.

Gausman (1-0) allowed five hits, two walks and one run. He struck out three.

Toronto left-hander Francisco Liriano (0-1) gave up five hits, two walks and two runs in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out 10.

White Sox 10, Indians 4

CLEVELAND -- Chicago scored seven runs in the first two innings and rolled to an easy victory.

Tim Anderson and Matt Davidson homered for the White Sox, who won the last two games of the three-game series. Michael Brantley and Yan Gomes homered for the Indians. Reliever Anthony Swarzak (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings for the win.

The White Sox made quick work of Cleveland starter Josh Tomlin (0-2), pounding him for seven runs on eight hits in 1 2/3 innings, matching the shortest outing of Tomlin's career.

Brewers 5, Reds 1

CINCINNATI -- Ryan Braun hit a two-run home run, Eric Thames added a solo shot, and Jimmy Nelson allowed one run and five hits through seven innings to lead Milwaukee.

Nelson (1-0) struck out five and did not walk a batter while helping snap the Reds' four-game winning streak. Thames went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Orlando Arcia had three hits to pace the Brewers' offense.

Reds shortstop Zack Cozart went 3-for-3 to extend his season-opening hitting streak to nine games. He hit in 10 straight games to begin last season.

Rangers 8, Angels 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Texas starter Yu Darvish, who was winless in his first two starts of the season for the first time in his major league career, struck out 10 while shutting out Los Angeles on five hits over seven innings.

All but one Rangers hitter in the starting lineup had at least one of the club's 11 hits. Backup catcher Robinson Chirinos had two hits, drove in three and scored twice. Carlos Gomez and Nomar Mazara each homered for Texas, which won two of three in the series.

Angels starter Ricky Nolasco was finished after five innings, making 97 pitches and giving up five runs and eight hits. He struck out seven and walked none.

Red Sox 4, Pirates 3

BOSTON -- Hanley Ramirez hit a two-run double in the eighth inning to tie the game, and Xander Bogaerts knocked Ramirez in with the go-ahead run as Boston beat Pittsburgh.

Ramirez scored on Bogaerts' opposite-field single to right.

Andrew McCutchen, a combined 0-for-9 with three strikeouts in the first two games at Fenway last week, launched a two-run homer for Pittsburgh. It was the 176th of his career, tying Barry Bonds for the fourth most in Pirates history.

Cubs 4, Dodgers 0

CHICAGO -- Brett Anderson pitched five innings of shutout ball to help Chicago get the win.

Anthony Rizzo and Addison Russell each slugged a solo homer while Anderson scattered three hits over five innings and worked out of two jams. The Cubs took two of three from the Dodgers and claimed their third straight series triumph.

Chicago has now won four of its last five while Los Angeles has dropped four of its past six.

Twins 11, Tigers 5

DETROIT -- Max Kepler and Miguel Sano blasted three-run homers to power Minnesota to its victory. Robbie Grossman added a two-run shot as the Twins salvaged the finale of a three-game series.

Phil Hughes (2-0) recorded the win while giving up four runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Miguel Cabrera and Justin Upton each hit his first home run of the season and Jose Iglesias drove in two runs for Detroit. Jordan Zimmermann (1-1) allowed five runs on four hits and five walks in 4 2/3 innings.

Royals 3, Athletics 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Jason Vargas pitched 7 2/3 scoreless innings as Kansas City snapped an eight-game losing streak against Oakland.

Vargas (2-0), who missed most of last season after rehabbing from 2015 Tommy John surgery, limited the Athletics to four hits while walking one and striking out eight.

Lorenzo Cain had three hits and a stolen base on his 31st birthday, hiking his batting average to .345. Kelvin Herrera worked the ninth to pick up the Royals' first save of the season. Kansas City had been the only American League club without a save.

Rockies 3, Giants 1

SAN FRANCISCO -- Trevor Story hit his first home run of the season, and left-hander Chris Rusin rescued injured Jon Gray with 3 1/3 innings of lead-protecting relief to lead Colorado to a victory in the opener of a four-game series.

Story's home run, a two-run shot in the fourth inning, came off Giants ace Madison Bumgarner (0-2), who remained winless in three starts despite striking out eight in six innings. He allowed all three of Colorado's runs on six hits.

Gray was removed in the bottom of the fourth because of an aggravation of a strained right foot he sustained in spring training. Rusin and three fellow relievers teamed to limit the Giants to four hits the rest of the way, with closer Greg Holland surviving a bases-loaded jam in a scoreless ninth for his sixth save.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Odds for some non-favorites to win the US Open in June in Wisconsin

60-1– Charl Schwartzel

80-1— Tyrell Hatton

100-1- Marc Leishman

125-1— Bill Haas

150-1— Billy Horschel

200-1— Charles Howell III

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud…….

13) Next Friday in this space we’ll be analyzing the 2017 NFL schedule, since apparently it is being released Thursday night on the NFL Network. The old coach Bud Grant used to say “It is not who you play, it is when you play them.” Next week the ’17 season begins to take shape.

12) I have an idea for an NFL Films reality show, kind of a Hard Knocks after the season.

Apparently teams do exit interviews after the season with players, to talk about what they need to work on in the offseason, or if they’ll be back next year— this is done to keep the lines of communication open. It would make great TV- there have to be some interesting discussions.

11) Last April, Trevor Story took baseball by storm, hitting .261 with 10 homers, 20 RBI just in April. This year? Not so much; Story is hitting .143 with one homer, two RBI- he hit his first HR last night, off Madison Bumgarner, so maybe he is turning things around.

10) Most Dodger games aren’t on TV in the Las Vegas sportsbooks, which is dumb, because of some blackout rule. It makes zero sense; Vegas is three hours from LA, baseball could use the exposure from Dodger fans in Las Vegas wanting to watch their team play. This should be fixed.

9) Arizona has a rookie manager this year in Torey Lovullo, his dad was a producer on the old Hee Haw TV show, the country music show with Roy Clark/Buck Owens.

8) Remember the old medal gymnast Mary Lou Retton? Her dad played basketball at West Virginia, with Jerry West. Mary Lou didn’t get her dad’s height.

7) Memphis Grizzlies’ PG Mike Conley has played in 756 NBA games, 24,854 minutes and he has never gotten a technical foul— not even one!!!

6) Sharp money on the Boston Bruins came in Tuesday, forcing the B’s Stanley Cup odds to drop from 28-1 to 16-1. Bruins are favored over Ottawa in this first round series, despite not having home ice advantage in the series.

5) When Hurricane Matthew ripped thru South Carolina last year, Harbourtown Country Club on Hilton Head lost over 500 trees.

4) Former Auburn football coach Tommy Tuberville might run for governor of Alabama next year. No idea if he would be a good candidate, but they do take football seriously in Alabama.

3) Orlando Magic fired their GM, apparently want to hire Grant Hill to take his place, but Hill is already a part-owner of the Atlanta Hawks and might not be interested.

2) Portland’s Moe Harkless has a clause in his contract that gives him a $500K bonus if he shot 35% from the arc this season.

Going into the season finale Wednesday, Harkless was at 35.1% on the arc; if he goes 0-1, he drops below 35%. So what did he do? He played 22 minutes but didn’t take a 3-pointer. Thats plus-$500K for Mr Harkless, Not exactly the competitive spirit of Ted Williams, but half a million bucks guaranteed is a sweet deal.

1— Got home very late from my trip; we got delayed taking off in Las Vegas. My thanks to the people at SouthPoint Casino, an underrated place for your next Vegas vacation.
