Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

Odds to win the Stanley Cup this spring:

3-1— Chicago, Washington

7-2— Minnesota

5-1— Columbus

8-1— San Jose, Montreal, Pittsburgh

10-1— Edmonton

16-1— Anaheim

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) Steve Fisher retired as San Diego State’s coach Monday night, ending a 26-year career where he compiled a 495-288 record, winning the 1989 national title with Michigan, when he replaced Bill Frieder just before the NCAA tournament, after Frieder bolted for Arizona State.

Fisher later built San Diego State’s program up from practically nothing to one of the best programs in the west- he will be missed.

12) Cubs raised their World Series championship banner last night; they’ve moved the bullpens to under the outfield bleachers, and put in 500 new, premium-priced seats down each foul line, where the bullpens used to be. Cubs beat the Dodgers 3-2 to win their home opener.

11) What have you done for me lately?

NHL’s Los Angeles Kings won the Stanley Cup in 2012 and 2014, their only Cups in 52 years of existence, but they fired coach Daryl Sutter Monday, after six full seasons with the Kings- he won two of the last five Stanley Cups, but got canned- doubt he’ll be out of work long.

10) Reminder; if you’re in Las Vegas and come to the SouthPoint Casino, bring a fleece or a light jacket- excellent place to watch sports, but a little cool in here.

9) You meet people from all over the country here; was talking to a guy from Louisiana Sunday night— he told me one of the main reasons Ben Simmons chose to play basketball at LSU was that lot of the bigger-name schools wouldn’t OK a camera crew following Simmons around all the time so Showtime could do their infomercial/documentary on him.

Hard to figure out why LSU’s season went so far into the dumper that season.

8) Then there was the conversation between two friends sitting behind me last night, while I was watching the Padres-Rockies game. These two guys were talking politics and apparently they hadn’t seen each other since last November’s election. It was a spirited discussion between two friends, but it got heated now and then- they didn’t agree on too much.

7) Padres 5, Rockies 3— Wil Myers hit for the cycle, just the second Padre (Matt Kemp) ever to do that.

6) Mets 4, Phillies 3— Teams carry so many pitchers these days, their benches are short; Mets were tied 2-2 in the 7th inning last night- they had go-ahead run on second with two out and a righty on the mound for the Phils.

Terry Collins had Michael Conforto in the on-deck circle, but if he uses Conforto there, Philly puts a lefty in, and Collins counters with Wilmer Flores. So he used Flores against the righty, preserving Conforto for later in the game (he never got in) if he needed him. Smart.

5) Heat 124, Cavaliers 121— Miami stays alive in the playoff race, barely beating a Cleveland team playing without Lebron James/Kyrie Irving. Heat still needs the Pacers to lose a game to make the playoffs— Indiana beat the 76ers in Philly last night.

4) Giants 4, Diamondbacks 1— Buster Posey got beaned in his first at-bat yesterday, was removed from the game as a precaution. Giants later scored three runs on a ground ball to the pitcher, something you rarely see, even in a Little League game.

3) NFL announced the Saints-Dolphins game from London will be one of those hideous 9:30am ET kickoffs. Imagine working in a sports book here in Las Vegas, with a 6:30am kickoff? Oy.

2) Active managers who will be in the Hall of Fame someday: Bruce Bochy, Joe Maddon and Terry Francona. Cubs’ GM Theo Epstein will also get in.

1— Lawson brothers bolted Memphis’ basketball team last week; four of their teammates have since followed them out of town, gutting the Tigers’ roster- they’re basically an expansion team right now, a total rebuild.

Lawsons surfaced Monday at Kansas; we’ll see how that goes.

I know this; recruiting is a cut-throat business and it never seems to end.

Tuesday's MLB Game of the Day: Orioles at Red Sox
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pomeranz originally was slated to make his season debut over the weekend in Detroit before a rainout on Thursday curtailed that plan.

Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox (A: -105, H: -115, Total: 9.5)

What oddsmakers consider most when making MLB betting odds: Live From Las Vegas
Ever wonder what goes into those daily MLB moneylines and totals? We get the inside story behind the numbers from Johnny Avello, executive director of race and sports for the Wynn Las Vegas.

It may only be a week into the regular season, but the early story of the Boston Red Sox's campaign has been manager John Farrell's inability to fill out a lineup card in the way he had hoped during spring training. One day after placing Jackie Bradley Jr. on the disabled list, the Red Sox expect to get back Xander Bogaerts from bereavement leave on Tuesday as they return home to begin a two-game series with the Baltimore Orioles.

Farrell told reporters Monday the clubhouse at Fenway Park was fumigated and disinfected a few times while Boston was visiting Detroit over the weekend in an effort to fight a flu bug that has sidelined Hanley Ramirez and Mookie Betts while also sending reliever Robbie Ross to the disabled list. To add further insult to injury, Bradley joined Ross on the 10-day DL on Monday after learning he suffered a right knee sprain, while Bogaerts' return from Aruba was delayed a day when his flight never was cleared for takeoff Sunday night. The Orioles took a day off Monday to lick their wounds after becoming the last major-league team to suffer a loss in Sunday's 7-3 setback against the New York Yankees. Baltimore's dominant bullpen imploded in that defeat, as its relievers were charged with every run - including four in the ninth inning to Darren O'Day.

TV:
7:10 p.m. ET, MASN2 (Baltimore), NESN (Boston)

LINE HISTORY:
The Red Sox opened at -120 and that moneyline has come back slightly to -115. The total hit the board at 9.5 and hasn't moved.

INJURY REPORT:

Orioles - CF J. Rickard (Out Indefinitely, finger), SP C. Tillman (Early May, shoulder), OF A. Santander (Out Indefinitely, elbow).

Red Sox - X. Bogaerts (Probable, personal), 1B H. Ramirez (Questionable, flu), RP J. Kelly (Questionable, flu), CF J. Bradley Jr. (Out, knee), SP D. Price (Early May, elbow), RP R. Ross Jr. (Late April, flu), SP D. Pomeranz (Probable, arm), RP C. Smith (Early June, elbow), RP T. Thornburg (Late April, shoulder).

WEATHER REPORT:
It should be a beautiful evening for baseball at Fenway Park on Tuesday. Evening temperatures are expected to be in the low-70's with partly cloudy skies. Hitters may enjoy the wind as there is a 10-15 MPH wind in the forecast blowing OUT to left center.

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Orioles RH Dylan Bundy (1-0, 1.29 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Drew Pomeranz (2016: 11-12, 3.32)

Bundy allowed one run and four singles while registering eight strikeouts over seven innings in a win against Toronto on Wednesday. The fourth overall pick in the 2011 draft threw 69 of his 99 pitches for strikes and did not issue a walk as he limited the Blue Jays to one hit outside of a stretch in the third inning, when he gave up three straight. Bundy went 1-2 with a 6.75 ERA in six games (three starts) versus Boston last season and struggled against the two hitters he has faced the most: Bogaerts (4-for-12) and Dustin Pedroia (5-for-11).

Pomeranz originally was slated to make his season debut over the weekend in Detroit before a rainout on Thursday curtailed that plan, so he will draw his first start in the opener of this series instead after dealing with a flexor strain and a triceps issue during the spring. The 28-year-old struggled at Fenway after arriving from San Diego in a mid-July trade, going 0-2 with a 6.43 ERA in seven appearances (six starts). One of those poor home outings came in his lone 2016 start versus the Orioles, as he gave up five runs - including a pair of homers - over only two innings.

TRENDS:

* Orioles are 5-0 in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600.
* Red Sox are 1-5 in their last 6 vs. American League East.
* Red Sox are 1-4 in Pomeranz's last 5 home starts.
* Under is 5-1 in Orioles last 6 games vs. a left-handed starter.
* Under is 4-0 in Bundy's last 4 starts overall.
* Under is 6-1 in Red Sox last 7 games vs. a right-handed starter.
* Under is 10-1-1 in Pomeranz's last 12 starts overall.
* Under is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings.

WALK-OFFS:

1. Orioles CF Adam Jones and 1B Chris Davis have homered in the same game 36 times since becoming teammates in 2011 - the highest total for any teammates over that span.
2. Boston is the only team that has yet to allow a stolen base, as Cs Sandy Leon (three) and Christian Vazquez (one) have thrown out the runner on each of their four attempts.
3. All seven of the runs Baltimore's bullpen has allowed in 20 2/3 innings this season came in Sunday's loss to the Yankees.

CONSENSUS:
Early consensus on this rivalry matchup has 62 percent of the wagers on the home team Boston Red Sox and Over is picking up 52 percent of the totals selections.

Tuesday's Diamond Notes
April 11, 2017

Hottest team: Angels (5-2) vs. Rangers

Los Angeles pulled out a three-game sweep of Seattle in the most dramatic of ways by erasing a six-run ninth inning deficit in Sunday’s 10-9 triumph. The Halos have won five of six games since losing the opener at Oakland, while scoring at least five runs in each of their five victories.

Tyler Skaggs takes the mound tonight in the start of a three-game series with the Rangers. Skaggs was roughed up by Oakland in his last start by allowing five earned runs in 5.1 innings of a 5-1 defeat on April 6. The southpaw was winless in four home outings in 2016, including in a 2-1 defeat to Texas last September in spite of tossing six scoreless innings.

Coldest team: Blue Jays (1-5) vs. Brewers

Toronto finally plays its home opener after dropping five of six games to Baltimore and Tampa Bay. The Jays, a playoff team the last two seasons, are hitting .199 as a club and have plated two runs or fewer in four of five losses. The good, third baseman Josh Donaldson is batting .348 through the first six contests. The bad, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki has racked up three hits in 24 at-bats, while catcher Russell Martin is hitless in 14 plate appearances.

Twenty-game winner from last season J.A. Happ looks to bounce back after losing his season debut at Baltimore, 3-1, in spite of striking out nine batters in seven innings of work. Toronto faces a Milwaukee squad that has stumbled to a 2-5 record out of the gate, while allowing at least six runs in four of its defeats.

Hottest pitcher: Dylan Bundy, Orioles (1-0, 1.29 ERA)

Baltimore has jumped out to an impressive 4-1 start as Bundy is responsible for one of those victories. The right-hander yielded four hits and one earned run in seven innings of a 3-1 home win over the Blue Jays last Wednesday. Bundy won 10 games last season for Baltimore, but didn’t have much luck against tonight’s opponent as the Orioles posted a 1-2 record in his three starts against the Red Sox. The 24-year old allowed 13 earned runs in 14.2 innings of work against Boston, but did pick up an underdog victory at Fenway Park last September.

Coldest pitcher: Dan Straily, Marlins (0-1, 13.50 ERA)

Miami heads back to Marlins Park for its home opener after splitting its first six contests to the Nationals and Mets. Straily was the only Marlins’ starter not to last until at least the fifth inning as the right-hander didn’t make it out of the fourth inning of a 6-4 setback at Washington last Wednesday. The former Reds’ hurler was roughed up by the Braves last season in a 7-2 loss at Turner Field, allowing six earned runs in 6.1 innings. Atlanta dominated Miami in 2016 at Marlins Park by posting a solid 6-2 ledger.

Biggest OVER streak: Braves (4-0 last four)

Sticking with Atlanta, the Braves’ pitching has not helped their cause early on by allowing six runs in four defeats and giving up five runs in another loss. Starting pitcher has been decent for Atlanta through the first two series by owning a 2.62 ERA, but the bullpen has imploded at the wrong time by posting a 5.79 ERA. The OVER streak may be in jeopardy with Bartolo Colon taking the mound, who scattered two hits and one earned run in six innings in a 3-1 victory over his former team, the Mets last Wednesday.

Biggest UNDER streak: White Sox (3-0 last three)

Chicago’s offense has seen its ups and downs through the first two series by failing to score at least four runs in consecutive games. Yes, the White Sox have posted 11 and six-run efforts in their two wins, but have also been limited to three runs or fewer in their three defeats. The White Sox head to Cleveland this afternoon to face an Indians’ squad that totaled seven runs in its three-game sweep at the hands of the Diamondbacks this past weekend. James Shields heads to the mound for Chicago today as the Sox eclipsed the OVER in six of his eight road outings last season, including an OVER in a 13-2 drubbing at Progressive Field.

Matchup to watch: Diamondbacks at Giants

Arizona will look to be a threat to San Francisco and Los Angeles inside the NL West this season as the D-backs have jumped out to a 6-2 mark. The D-backs suffered their second loss of the season on Monday in a 4-1 defeat to the Giants at AT&T Park as Matt Moore shut down Arizona by allowing three hits in eight innings of work for San Francisco. However, the Giants lost All-Star catcher Buster Posey early on after getting hit in the head by a pitch in the first inning. Posey is not expected to suit up in tonight’s contest as the Giants seek their third straight victory.

Southpaw Robbie Ray heads to the mound for Arizona as he picked up a no-decision in a 9-3 victory over San Francisco last Thursday. Ray gave up three earned runs in 5.2 innings, but the D-backs exploded for seven late runs to clinch the series victory. Arizona struggled last season when Ray was listed as a road underdog by posting a dreadful 2-11 mark.

Jeff Samardzija counters for San Francisco as he attempts to rebound from a loss to Ray and Arizona as the right-hander yielded six earned runs in 5.1 innings of work, including three home runs. Last season, Samardzija closed out with a 2-7 record in his final nine home starts, but one of those victories came against Arizona last July.

Betcha didn’t know: San Diego dropped six of its final seven meetings at Colorado last season, but the Padres topped the Rockies on Monday at Coors Field, 5-3. Over the last two seasons, the Padres have actually won the first two games of a series at Colorado three times, including last April when San Diego plated 29 runs in two blowouts in the underdog role.

Biggest public favorite: Indians (-235) vs. White Sox

Biggest public underdog: Rangers (+105) at Angels

Biggest line move: Pirates (-170 to -190) vs. Reds

LEADING OFF: Indians play home opener, Red Sox fight flu
April 10, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

HELLO AGAIN

The Indians play their first game in Cleveland since losing an epic Game 7 to the Chicago Cubs in the World Series last season. Most of the baseball world remembers the Cubs ending their 108-year title drought, but the memories aren't so positive for the Indians. ''It still hurts,'' star shortstop Francisco Lindor said last week. ''It's tough. But we've got to turn the page.'' They'll try to do that behind Carlos Carrasco (1-0, 3.18 ERA) while facing James Shields (1-0, 1.69) and Chicago's other team, the White Sox.

BUSTER BEANED

Giants star Buster Posey will likely sit out a day but was doing well after being struck in the helmet by a 94 mph fastball Monday. Posey will be re-evaluated before a game against Arizona, but San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said the catcher is ''doing good'' following the scary moment. ''It's one of the worst sounds you can hear in baseball, the ball hitting the helmet,'' Bochy said. ''It's a scary moment. There's been a lot of damage to hitters hit in the head.''

FLU FIGHTERS

The flu-ridden Red Sox return to Boston still trying to kick the bug that's ailed the club during the first week of the season. The home clubhouse at Fenway Park was fumigated and disinfected ahead of this homestand after Mookie Betts, Hanley Ramirez, Robbie Ross and even broadcaster Dave O'Brien have been sidelined by illness. Drew Pomeranz (left forearm flexor strain) comes off the disabled list to make his first start of the season for Boston against Baltimore's Dylan Bundy (1-0, 1.29 ERA).

OUT OF THE GATE

After a day the surprising Minnesota Twins try to maintain the momentum of a 5-1 start when they visit the Detroit Tigers. Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays attempt to regroup from a 1-5 start when they play their home opener against Milwaukee.

WELCOME SIGHT

Trying to shake off his slow start, new Cardinals leadoff man Dexter Fowler faces Washington Nationals left-hander Gio Gonzalez. Fowler is 10 for 20 with a home run and four extra-base hits against Gonzalez in his career.

DUSTY'S PRAISE

The Nationals placed Trea Turner on the disabled list Monday with a strained right hamstring, but manager Dusty Baker was thrilled to only lose the shortstop for 10 days instead of 15 thanks to an offseason rule change. The minimum DL stay was shortened to 10 days for non-concussion-related injuries as part of the new collective bargaining agreement. ''I think baseball did one of the best things they've done in a long time,'' Baker said.

Hot-hitting Diamondbacks on a roll to start the season
April 10, 2017

PHOENIX (AP) The Arizona Diamondbacks have apparently needed more time to warm up, falling behind in six of their first seven games before their bats got going.

Arizona has wasted little time in getting up to speed this season, matching its best start as a franchise behind a powerful, late-starting offense, timely pitching and an enthusiasm that spreads across the clubhouse.

''When we have a lot of good moments, when things really go in our direction, that becomes contagious,'' Diamondbacks first-year manager Torey Lovullo said. ''We're doing a lot of good things, doing a lot of things right on a daily basis.''

Few outside Arizona's clubhouse expected this.

The Diamondbacks shook up their leadership, luring Mike Hazen away from the Boston Red Sox to replace Dave Stewart as general manager. Hazen brought in Lovullo, previously Boston's bench coach, to manage the team after Chip Hale was fired.

They did little to change the roster, entering this season with, for the most part, the same team that lost 95 games last season.

The affable Lovullo said he loved this team coming out of spring training despite the lukewarm prognostications and the Diamondbacks made him look prophetic by going 6-1, matching the 2000 team for the best start in franchise history, during the first week of the season.

''You always want to get off to a good start,'' Diamondbacks left-hander Patrick Corbin said. ''It's something we haven't done really since I've been here. I think it's important to keep things rolling. Guys are very confident right now so we've got to continue growing.''

Arizona's offense always seems to be good and finished third in the National League in runs scored.

This season has gotten off to a roaring start, even by their ball-crushing standards.

Through Sunday's 3-2 victory over Cleveland, the Diamondbacks led the major leagues in runs - a franchise-record 48 through seven games - hits, RBIs, average, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. They were also hitting .422 with runners in scoring position and .375 with two outs.

Arizona won three of four against their Chase Field nemesis, the San Francisco Giants, then swept the Indians, the reigning American League champions.

''We're really not worrying about last year or anything,'' outfielder A.J. Pollock said. ''We're just going out and playing good baseball, playing good tough baseball with pitching, defense and hitting.''

The pitching has helped fuel their fantastic start.

Arizona failed to have a quality start five times in its first six games but the bullpen shut opponents down, leading to five wins in those games. Shelby Miller, Zach Greinke and Corbin each earned victories in Arizona's last three wins.

The Diamondbacks entered Monday's game with baseball's 10th-best ERA at 3.57 and they shut down the Indians over the weekend, holding them to seven total runs.

''I think it starts in our starting pitchers,'' Corbin said. ''If we can go out and pitch deep in the ball game, we know offensively how good we are and defensively. And the bullpen's done a great job as well. So if we can just keep things rolling and keep things clicking it should be good.''

Sustaining this success will be the key.

A winning first week represents 4 percent of the entire 162-game schedule. The last time the Diamondbacks started 6-1, they finished a respectable 88-77, but were 12 games out of first in the NL West and missed the playoffs.

Arizona kicked off a 10-game road trip against NL West opponents on Monday with a 4-1 loss to the Giants.

''We're in a good place right now,'' Lovullo said. ''We've got to earn the respect of the National League. We have to keep playing good baseball to get the fans to back us. We know they're there. We know they're supporting us. Hopefully we can keep this thing rolling and fill this thing up the rest of the year.''

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Yoenis Cespedes hit three of New York's seven homers to back Matt Harvey, and the Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 14-4 Tuesday night.

Harvey (2-0) left with tightness in his left hamstring after allowing two runs and five hits and striking out six in 5 2/3 innings.

Phillies starter Clay Buchholz (0-1) also exited because of an injury, a strained right forearm. He gave up six runs and eight hits in 2 1/3 innings.

Lucas Duda hit two homers and Asdrubal Cabrera and Travis d'Arnaud also went deep for New York, which has 46 homers in its last 21 games at Citizens Bank Park.

Cespedes fell down on a wild swing on the first pitch he saw, then hit a three-run homer to straightaway center field off Buchholz in the first inning. He connected to deep left in the fourth off Adam Morgan and drove another one way out to left in the fifth against Morgan.

INDIANS 2, WHITE SOX 1, 10 INNINGS

CLEVELAND (AP) - Michael Brantley doubled home Francisco Lindor with two outs in the 10th inning as Cleveland celebrated its 2016 AL championship and then beat Chicago in its home opener.

Brantley could only watch and cheer for his teammates last October during their postseason run after undergoing two surgeries on his right shoulder. But he's healthy now, and after playing in just 11 games last season, Brantley made the most of his first home game since May 10 with his game-winning hit.

Lindor walked with two outs off Tommy Kahnle (0-1) before Brantley sliced a 3-2 pitch down the left-field line. Lindor was running on the pitch and scored easily while Brantley danced around second base before being mobbed by his teammates.

It was the dramatic ending the Indians didn't get in their last home game, a 10-inning loss to the Chicago Cubs in Game 7 of the World Series. Cleveland led the majors with 11 walk-off wins last season.

Bryan Shaw (1-0), who took the loss when the Cubs won their first title in 108 years, got the win.

MARLINS 8, BRAVES 4

MIAMI (AP) - A gray cat went scrambling for cover in the Marlins Park outfield midway through Miami's home opener, and no wonder, given the barrage off Marcell Ozuna's bat.

Ozuna homered twice and had a career-high six RBIs to help Miami beat Atlanta.

Announced attendance was 36,519, and that didn't include a cat that ran onto the field midway through the game. It scurried along the outfield warning track, ran away from right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, crawled up the center field wall and then appeared to get stuck in the animatronic home run sculpture.

Marlins president David Samson said if Ozuna had hit a third homer, the sculpture would not have been activated for fear of harming the cat.

Dan Straily (1-1) allowed three runs, two earned, in five innings for his first victory since joining Miami.

Bartolo Colon (0-1) allowed six runs in four innings.

ANGELS 6, RANGERS 5, 10 INNINGS

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Carlos Perez's squeeze bunt in the 10th inning capped another comeback for Los Angeles, which scored three times in the ninth before going on to beat Texas.

The Rangers led 5-0 through six innings.

With runners on the corners and one out, Perez set down a perfect bunt that hugged the inside grass and died without going foul.

The Angels had rallied to score seven runs in the ninth in the previous game on Sunday to beat the Mariners.

The Angels' ninth-inning comeback Tuesday came off Rangers' closer Sam Dyson. Down 5-2 going into the inning, the Angels got a solo home run from Danny Espinoza, back-to-back doubles by Yunel Escobar and Mike Trout, and a run-scoring single from Albert Pujols to tie it.

Trout then robbed Mike Napoli of a home run to lead off the 10th.

Cam Bedrosian (1-0) got the win with an inning of relief and Jeremy Jeffress (0-1) was stuck with the loss.

RED SOX 8, ORIOLES 1

BOSTON (AP) - Drew Pomeranz struck out six in his season debut, Dustin Pedroia drove in four runs and Boston beat Baltimore.

Christian Vazquez added a two-run triple in the eighth, capping off a 4-for-4 game, as the Red Sox tagged Baltimore pitchers for 15 hits and had back-to-back three-run innings in the seventh and eighth to blow the game open.

Pomeranz, who opened the season on the disabled list with a strained left forearm, took a shutout into the seventh inning. He held Baltimore to four hits and one run in six innings and picked up his first win at Fenway Park.

Pablo Sandoval had a sacrifice fly in the second and Pedroia had one in the fifth off Dylan Bundy (1-1), who was strong through the first six innings. Bundy pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs and seven hits.

TIGERS 2, TWINS 1

DETROIT (AP) - Matthew Boyd allowed one hit in six outstanding innings and James McCann homered in the fifth to lift Detroit over Minnesota.

Boyd (1-1) took a no-hitter into the sixth before Robbie Grossman broke it up by lining a clean single to left field with two out. The Detroit left-hander struck out six and walked two before turning the game over to the bullpen. Tigers relievers have struggled so far this season, but they were able to close this game out.

Francisco Rodriguez allowed a run in the ninth but recovered for his third save in four chances. Pinch-hitter Max Kepler hit a popup with two on to end it.

Hector Santiago (1-1) allowed only three hits in 6 1/3 innings, but one of them was a two-run shot by McCann.

NATIONALS 8, CARDINALS 3

WASHINGTON (AP) - Daniel Murphy homered, doubled twice and tied career highs with five RBIs and four hits and Washington defeated St. Louis.

Matt Wieters and Jayson Werth also hit solo shots to help Washington earn a second home series victory.

Nationals left-hander Gio Gonzalez (1-0) allowed two runs - one earned - over seven innings. He allowed six hits before retiring his last 11 batters.

Lance Lynn (0-1) allowed six runs - four earned - and five hits and four walks over five innings.

ROCKIES 3, PADRES 2

DENVER (AP) - Nolan Arenado hit a go-ahead homer in the seventh, Antonio Senzatela threw seven sharp innings for his first major league win and Colorado beat San Diego.

Arenado lined a fastball from reliever Miguel Diaz (1-1) to right for his third homer. Carlos Gonzalez and Charlie Blackmon also hit solo shots to help Colorado knot the three-game series with San Diego at a game apiece. The Rockies have a chance to win their third straight series to start the season, a feat only accomplished in team history by the 1995 squad.

Senzatela (1-0) and his blazing fastball made things difficult for the Padres. He allowed two runs while striking out five. The Rockies' reliable bullpen took it from there, with Greg Holland working his way around a leadoff walk in the ninth to earn his fifth save.

DIAMONDBACKS 4, GIANTS 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Robbie Ray pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning despite some control issues, Jake Lamb hit a bases-loaded triple and Arizona beat San Francisco.

Chris Iannetta added an RBI single, and A.J. Pollock singled, scored and made a stellar play in center field to rob Aaron Hill of extra bases in the third.

Arizona improved to 7-2, matching its best start in franchise history.

Ray (1-0) settled in after pitching out of a pair of early jams and overcame matching his career high of five walks. The lefty struck out eight and allowed four hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Fernando Rodney struck out pinch-hitter Brandon Crawford with the tying run at second to end the game. Rodney allowed two runs but earned his third save.

Jeff Samardzija (0-2) allowed three runs in 6 2/3 innings.

ASTROS 7, MARINERS 5

SEATTLE (AP) - George Springer hit his fourth leadoff home run of the season, Evan Gattis had a bases-loaded pinch-hit double and Houston beat Seattle.

Seattle reliever James Pazos gave up hits to all four Houston batters he faced in the sixth inning - including Gattis' double and a run-scoring single by Alex Bregman - as the Astros scored four runs to take the lead for good.

Joe Musgrove (1-0) pitched into the sixth inning, giving up three runs and seven hits for Houston.

Ariel Miranda (0-1) allowed four runs and seven hits.

REDS 6, PIRATES 2

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Scooter Gennett homered for the second straight night and finished with three hits, helping Cincinnati overcome the early departure of injured starter Rookie Davis to beat Pittsburgh for its sixth win in seven games.

Davis, a rookie right-hander, left in the fifth inning with a bruised right forearm after being struck by a pitch from Pittsburgh's Jameson Taillon. He worked four innings in his second major league start, allowing a run, two hits and four walks while striking out three.

Drew Storen (1-0) pitched the sixth for the win and Raisel Iglesias closed up shop for his third save. Juan Nicasio (0-1) allowed a run in the seventh for Pittsburgh.

BREWERS 4, BLUE JAYS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Keon Broxton and Domingo Santana hit solo home runs, Wily Peralta pitched six innings for his second victory in two starts and Milwaukee handed slumping Toronto its sixth straight home opening loss.

Troy Tulowitzki went 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs but the last-place Blue Jays fell to 1-6, the worst start in franchise history. Three of Toronto's six losses have been one-run decisions.

Peralta (2-0) allowed three runs and five hits. He walked four and struck out seven. Neftali Feliz finished for his second save.

Both Milwaukee homers came off left-hander J.A. Happ (0-2), who gave up four runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.

Hottest team: Angels (6-2) vs. Rangers

For the second straight game, the Halos erased a late deficit of five or more runs to capture victory away from the claws of defeat. On Sunday, the Angels came back from a six-run ninth inning deficit to stun the Mariners to pull out a three-game sweep. Last night, Los Angeles fell into a 5-0 hole against Cole Hamels and Texas, but the Angels plated three runs in the ninth before walking off in the 10th inning for a 6-5 triumph.

The Angels shoot for their fifth consecutive victory tonight behind Jesse Chavez, who pitched into the sixth inning of a 5-1 victory over the Mariners last Friday. The Rangers are currently 0-2 in Game 2’s of a series this season as A.J. Griffin allowed four earned runs in a 10-5 win over the Athletics last Friday and takes the mound this evening.

Coldest team: Braves (1-6) vs. Marlins

Atlanta closed last season with victories in 12 of its final 14 games to avoid a 100-loss campaign. The Braves haven’t carried over that momentum through the opening week by dropping six of seven games, including Tuesday’s 8-4 defeat to the Marlins. Atlanta’s pitching has struggled so far by allowing at least five runs in all six losses, while cashing the OVER in five of the past seven contests.

The Braves try to turn things around with southpaw Jaime Garcia on the mound, as the former Cardinals’ hurler gave up four earned runs in six innings of his Atlanta debut last Thursday against the Mets. Last season, Garcia allowed 10 earned runs in 9.2 innings of work against Miami in a pair of losses, including being on the wrong end of an 11-0 defeat at Marlins Park last July.

Hottest pitcher: Ivan Nova, Pirates (1-0, 0.00 ERA)

Pittsburgh looks to avoid the three-game sweep to surprising Cincinnati after the Reds plated 13 runs in the first two victories. Nova put together a terrific outing in his season debut against Atlanta by scattering six hits in six innings to grab a 5-4 home victory. The right-hander dominated the Reds in two home appearances last season, including a complete-game win last September, 4-1.

Coldest pitcher: Zack Wheeler, Mets (0-1, 11.25 ERA)

Although its only one start, Wheeler was knocked around by the Marlins in a 7-2 setback last Friday by giving up five earned runs in four innings. Wheeler hadn’t started a game since 2014, but beat the Phillies in two of three starts that season. New York goes for the sweep of Philadelphia after playing 14 runs in Tuesday’s blowout, as the Mets face Vince Velasquez, who is 1-9 in his past 10 starts since last July.

Biggest OVER run: Yankees (4-0 last four)

New York’s offense is starting to heat up by scoring a total of 15 runs in its last two victories, including a season-high eight runs in Monday’s home blowout of Tampa Bay. In four of seven games this season, the Yankees have posted at least five runs, while going OVER the total in seven of the last nine home matchups with the Rays. Southpaw Jordan Montgomery makes his Yankees’ debut this afternoon as Tampa Bay owns a 3-1 mark to the OVER the last four games.

Biggest UNDER run: White Sox (4-0 last four)

Chicago plated 11 runs against Detroit last Thursday, but the White Sox have scored eight runs in the last four games. Breaking it down further, six of those runs came in last Saturday’s victory over Minnesota, as the Sox have managed to score one run in each of their previous three defeats. Chicago’s pitching has actually been solid in spite of the inconsistency on offense as the bullpen owns a microscopic 1.33 ERA, while left-hander Derek Holland allowed two earned runs in six innings of his Chicago debut last Friday. Holland gets the start tonight against Cleveland as the Sox won four of six Game 2’s against Chicago last season.

Matchup to Watch: Dodgers vs. Cubs

The rematch of last season’s NLCS was delayed two hours due to rain on Monday, but Chicago raised its championship banner in a 3-2 walk-off victory over Los Angeles. The Dodgers have scored two runs or less in each of their three road defeats, while owning a 1-3 record against left-handed starting pitchers. However, Los Angeles has won three of four games against right-handed hurlers as John Lackey heads to the mound for Chicago.

Lackey won his season debut at St. Louis, 6-4 by tossing six innings and allowing four runs to cash as a -120 road favorite. The Cubs have won five of six since losing the season opener to the Cardinals, while hitting .210 against righties this season. Brandon McCarthy gets the ball for Los Angeles, as the Dodgers lost all three of his road starts in 2016, although each of these defeats came in the favorite role.

Betcha didn’t know: The Athletics own the Royals, especially in Kansas City lately. Last September, Oakland pulled off a four-game road sweep of Kansas City by outscoring the Royals, 43-12. On Monday, the A’s took care of the Royals again, this time in a 2-0 triumph to pick up their seventh straight win in the series.

Biggest public favorite: Indians (-245) vs. White Sox

Biggest public underdog: Rangers (+120) at Angels

Biggest line move: Pirates (-150 to -170) vs. Reds

LEADING OFF: Healthy Scherzer up in DC, Posey to DL
April 12, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

DEALING IN D.C.

NL Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer makes his first start at Nationals Park this season in a game against the Cardinals. The Nats ace was exceptional at home last year, going 8-3 with a 2.56 ERA. After missing opening day because of a finger injury, Scherzer (1-0) allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings to win his first start of the season against Philadelphia. St. Louis will send out Mike Leake (0-1).

GIANT HOLE

The Giants are looking at a week without Buster Posey after the star catcher was placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list Tuesday. Posey was struck in the helmet by a 94 mph fastball from Arizona's Taijuan Walker on Monday and was experiencing some unspecified lingering symptoms a day later. Manager Bruce Bochy said the team is being cautious because Posey is a catcher, and he may serve as designated hitter for a two-game series at Kansas City when he's eligible to return from the DL.

NEW STRIPES

Jordan Montgomery is set to make his major league debut after winning the Yankees' No. 5 starter spot. A standout at South Carolina in college, the left-hander has added velocity in the minor leagues and dominated last year at Double-A and Triple-A. Montgomery beat out established pitchers in a group that included Luis Cessa, Chad Green and Bryan Mitchell for the rotation slot. ''He just kind of pitched himself into it,'' New York manager Joe Girardi said. The Yankees host the Rays in the afternoon.

BAFFLING BYRON

Byron Buxton is again struggling mightily for the Twins. A hyped prospect who flopped as a rookie in 2015, Buxton looked like a budding star last September when he hit .287 with nine homers, 22 RBIs and a 1.011 OPS. He's failed to replicate that success, striking out three times Tuesday against Detroit to drop his season line to 2 for 29 with 17 strikeouts.

ROCK SOLID

The Rockies have a full rotation of promising young pitchers this season, including lefty Kyle Freeland, who will make his second major league start after an excellent debut. The 2014 first-round pick from the Denver area allowed a run and four hits over six innings against the Dodgers at Coors Field last week, and he'll get his second crack at the high elevation when Colorado hosts the Padres.
