Friday's Diamond Notes
April 21, 2017

Hottest team: Yankees (9-1 last 10) at Pirates

Following a 1-4 start to the season, the Bronx Bombers have lost once in their previous 10 contests. New York is one of three teams in the AL East alongside Boston and Baltimore that have won 10 games, as the Yankees finished off their recent homestand at 8-1 after taking two of three from the White Sox. The offense has been terrific for New York lately by scoring at least seven runs five times during this hot stretch.

New York heads to Pittsburgh for an interleague series as CC Sabathia takes the mound for the Yankees. Sabathia is returning to his former dominant self by owning an ERA of 1.47 through three starts as New York has won all three of the southpaw’s outings. However, the Yankees have lost each of their two road series openers this season.

Coldest team: Angels (2-8 last 10) vs. Blue Jays

Los Angeles stormed out of the gate with an impressive 6-2 record, which included consecutive massive comeback victories over Seattle and Texas. The Halos return home following a dreadful 1-5 road swing, capped off by dropping three of four at Houston. The early-season offensive success has disappeared, as the Angels have been limited to two runs or less in each of their last six losses.

All seven games on the road trip finished UNDER the total, but the Angels are 5-1 to the OVER in six home games as the Blue Jays invade Anaheim this weekend. Alex Meyer makes his first start of the season for Los Angeles, as the right-hander posted a 1-2 record and 4.57 ERA in five starts last season. Meyer and the Angels hope to turn around their luck as the Blue Jays own the worst record in baseball at 3-12.

Hottest pitcher: Wily Peralta, Brewers (3-0, 2.65 ERA)

Milwaukee has been a nice surprise in the NL Central through the first three weeks as the Brewers sit one-half game out of first place in the division at 9-8. The Brewers outlasted the Cardinals in the opener of their four-game set, 7-5 on Thursday at Miller Park. Peralta has won all three of his starts in the underdog role, while yielding 11 hits and five earned runs in 17 innings of work. However, the right-hander was winless in three starts against St. Louis last season, even though he struck out 10 in seven innings of a 2-1 home defeat to the Cardinals last August.

Coldest pitcher: Jose Quintana, White Sox (0-3, 6.75 ERA)

The Chicago southpaw started the season opener and was knocked around by Detroit in a 6-3 home defeat. Things haven’t improved for Quintana, who allowed five earned runs in a 6-0 shutout at Minnesota last Saturday to drop to 0-3 on the season. The good news for Quintana is he faces an Indians’ squad that he delivered five quality starts against in 2016, including a pair of 8-1 blowouts over Cleveland last September.

Biggest OVER run: Phillies (6-2 last eight)

Philadelphia finished off a series victory over New York by edging the Mets on Thursday, 6-4. The Phillies easily cashed their fourth straight OVER on a low total of 6 ½, while scoring at least four runs for the fifth consecutive contest. Philadelphia opens up a series with Atlanta as the Phillies has eclipsed the four-run threshold in five of six games at Citizens Bank Park, while four of the final six matchups last season between these NL East rivals finished OVER the total.

Biggest UNDER run: Royals (7-0 last seven)

Kansas City’s pitching has been outstanding of late by giving up a total of seven runs in the last seven games. Although the Royals lost in 13 innings to the Rangers last night, 1-0, Kansas City registered another UNDER, while allowing only one run in the past 22 innings. The Royals’ offense hasn’t done much by plating only four runs in the previous four games, as Kansas City will draw Texas ace Cole Hamels on Friday. The Rangers are 3-0 to the OVER in Hamels’ three starts this season, but he allowed three earned runs in two victories over the Royals in 2016.

Matchup to watch: Red Sox vs. Orioles

Both these AL East rivals are coming off road victories in extra innings on Thursday as Boston heads to Baltimore. The Red Sox staved off the Blue Jays, 4-1 in 10 innings to pick up their first road series victory of the season, while the Orioles edged the Reds, 2-1 in 10 to move to 4-0-1 in their five series this season.

The one split the Orioles picked up came against the Red Sox at Fenway Park earlier this month. Boston captured the opener of the two-game set, 8-1, while the Orioles rebounded the next night with a 12-5 blowout. Drew Pomeranz topped Dylan Bundy in Game 1 of that series as the two pitchers will get the ball on Friday at Camden Yards.

Pomeranz tossed six innings of four-hit ball, while allowing one earned run in his season debut. Bundy didn’t pitch poorly, giving up three earned runs in 6.1 innings, but the Orioles dropped to 1-3 in his four career starts against the Red Sox.

Betcha didn’t know: Rockies’ right-hander Tyler Chatwood dominated the Giants in his last start by delivering a complete-game, two-hitter in a 5-0 shutout last Saturday. Colorado improved to 4-0 in Chatwood’s past four starts against San Francisco since last May, as the right-hander allowed one earned run in each of those outings. Chatwood’s counterpart, Johnny Cueto, has dominated the Rockies since joining the Giants with San Francisco going 5-0 in the right-hander’s five starts against Colorado.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-175) at Reds

Biggest public underdog: Mariners (+125) at Athletics

Biggest line move: Rangers (-140 to -155) vs. Royals

Weekend Outlook
April 21, 2017

The Cubs are chasing the Reds for first-place, the Nationals look to continue dominance in New York and the Yankees have won nine of their last 10 heading to Pittsburgh to face the reeling Pirates. Those are just a few of the main storylines heading into the third weekend of MLB action. Here's a look at some of the series I'll be paying close attention to:

Washington (10-5) at N.Y. Mets (8-8)
Scheduled rotation: Roark vs. de Grom, Gonzalez vs. Harvey, Scherzer vs. Wheeler
Series Price: Mets -130, Nationals +110

The big problem with the Nationals is lack of a closer. Blake Treinen has only blown one save in four opportunities, but his 7.11 ERA is alarming. But this is what the Nationals do and they probably won't go looking for a closer until July. But that's really the only negative right now. There's so much more to be excited about with the Nats right now. Bryce Harper is looking the the 2015 MVP version again batting .400 with six home runs. And it's not just him hitting well right now. The entire team is and their .294 batting average leads baseball. The Mets are second-best in baseball with 24 home runs, but their .219 average is ranked 25th. Still, the Mets have gone 10-5-1 to the Over. Washington has gone 39-14 in its last 53 at New York.

Chicago Cubs (8-7) at Cincinnati (9-7)
Scheduled rotation: Lester vs. Adleman, Arrieta vs. Reed, Lackey vs. Arroyo
Series Price: Cubs -260, Reds +220

The Reds lost 15 of 19 games to the Cubs last season, but they're no pushovers anymore as they lead the World Champs by a half game atop the NL Central. This weekend's series will tell us a lot about who the Reds really, but I'm liking what I've seen so far. The Reds are +18 in run differential, which is second-best in NL behind the Dodgers. Zack Cozart's .405 batting average is third highest in NL. But the real star of the team that no one is talking about is the defense. It's steady every night. They don't beat themselves and their four errors are the second fewest in baseball (Kansas City has just one error).

The Cubs will miss rookie sensation Amir Garrett in the rotation and come loaded with Jon Lester on Friday and Jake Arrieta on Saturday, which is why they are the biggest favorite of the weekend to win the series. If the Reds were able to take two out of three in the series, it would be a major accomplishment.

San Francisco (6-10) at Colorado (10-6)
Scheduled rotation: Cueto vs. Chatwood, Moore vs. Senzatela, Samardzija vs. Freeland
Series Price: Giants -110, Rockies -110

We've got first-place against last-place in the NL West here, but this time around its the surprising Rockies on top. The Rockies have the edge in this series just because they don't have to face Madison Bumgarner, even though the Giants have lost all four of his starts. The star of the Rockies so far has been Greg Holland who leads MLB in saves. Holland is giving Colorado something they've never really had to close games out. He's saved all eight of his opportunities. On Friday the Giants face Tyler Chatwood who is coming off the best outing of his career, and it came at San Francisco. He tossed a complete-game shutout allowing just two hits. The Rockies have a big test in the next six days with a visit from first-place Washington on Monday. The will go home to face the Dodgers.

L.A. Dodgers (8-8) at Arizona (10-7)
Scheduled rotation: Wood vs. Walker, Maeda vs. Ray, McCarthy vs. Miller
Series Price: Dodgers -135, Diamondbacks +115

Arizona gets lucky in this series because they won't face Clayton Kershaw who won his third straight start on Wednesday. He was masterful last week against Arizona at Dodger Stadium. When they met last week the Dodgers took the first twoi games, but Arizona bounced back with wins in the final two of the four game series. Arizona comes off a 10-game west coast road trip where they went 4-6, but they now return home where they are 6-1 averaging 6.9 runs a game while hitting .313. They've gone 5-1-1 to the Over in those home games, which is something to look for in this series with the bottom of the rotation. One of the of most pleasant suprises for Arizona has been closer Fernando Rodney who is 5-for-5 in save opportunities. Also, the Arizona pitching staff has surrendered only 11 home runs, which is the lowest total in the NL. Expect lots of runs in this series.

Boston (10-6) at Baltimore (10-4)
Scheduled rotation: Pomeranz vs. Bundy, Wright vs. Asher, Rodriguez vs. Gausman
Series Price: Orioles -115 Red Sox -105

Baltimore got off to a 14-9 April last season and made the playoffs for the third time in the past five seasons and here they are in first-place of the competitive AL East again. They're season win total at the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook was 79.5. Buck Showalter just gets the job done no matter what they're rotation looks like and they've been doing it all this year without Chris Tillman who they went 22-8 behind last season. Boston went 11-8 against Baltimore last season, outscoring them 102-82. They split in Boston April 11-12 and the Under has gone 6-1-1 in the past eight meetings.

Detroit (8-7) at Minnesota (7-8)
Scheduled rotation: Verlander vs. Santiago, Boyd vs. Mejia, Fulmer vs. Gibson
Series Price: Tigers -130, Twins +110

Detroit gets lucky in this series because they don't have to face Ervin Santana and both teams are sliding coming into this series. The Tigers lead the AL Central with Cleveland But the good news for each is that tight AL Central where last-place is only one game back. Detroit comes off being swept at Tampa Bay and manger Brad Ausmus says there going to be changes if the level of play doesn't improve. After a hot start, Minnesota's bullpen is proving to be as bad as many expected and the team has lost four straight coming in. Detroit has gone 20-7 in the last 27 meetings. The Twins have have gone 10-3-2 to the Under this season.

N.Y. Yankees (10-5) at Pittsburgh (6-9)
Scheduled rotation: Sabathia vs. Glasnow, Pineda vs. Taillon, Montgomery vs. Nova
Series Price: Yankees -110, Pirates -110

The Yankees have an MLB-leading +28 run differential, most of it coming at home where they just completed an 8-1 homestand. They went 2-4 on the road to start the season, but they look as though they're starting to jell with the young crop of future stars exceeding expectations. And then there's veterans like Chase Headley second in the AL batting .396 and Starlin Castro third at .368. Aaron Judge has five homers and the starting rotation has looked capable of holding opponents down. The Yankees have won nine of the past 12 meetings and the Pirates come in slumping having been swept at St. Louis by three identical 2-1 scores, the last two coming after Starling Marte got suspended 80 games for taking PED's.

The Cubs visit Pittsburgh on Monday, so the Bucs could find themselves deep in last place heading into May if they don't pick up the pace. Jameson Taillon comes in with the second lowest ERA in the NL at 0.90. The Bucs have stayed Under the total in their last four and six of the last seven. This is a huge series for both squads. Pittsburgh needs some traction and New York's confidence could blow up by winning the series, and of course, we'll all hear about it non-stop because they're the Yankees.

LEADING OFF: Hamels looks for 1st decision; Cubs in Cincy
April 20, 2017

A look at what's happening all around the majors Friday:

---

HAMELS LOOKS FOR A DECISION

Cole Hamels makes his fourth start this season for Texas, and the Rangers left-hander still is looking for his first decision when the team hosts Kansas City. The 33-year-old Hamels has a 3.50 ERA and exited each of his three starts in position for a win, but the Rangers lost all of those games. Only once in his big league career has Hamels made four consecutive starts without a decision - midway through the 2010 season with Philadelphia. He was 2-0 in his first three starts last year, his first full season in Texas and then won his fourth start. That was after going 0-2 his first three games in three consecutive seasons for the Phillies (2013-15).

---

WRIGLEY SOUTH

The Cubs return to Great American Ball Park, where they romped during their World Series championship season. The Cubs have won 18 of their last 22 games against the Reds overall. They piled up 42 homers off Cincinnati pitching last season, the most ever by a Reds opponent, and they've homered in each of their last 12 games at Great American. As Reds manager Bryan Price puts it, ''You can't have somebody run roughshod over you.''

---

REMEMBER ME?

Daniel Murphy wrecked the Mets last year, getting a hit in all 19 games he played against his former team. He wound up batting .413 (31 for 75) with seven home runs and 21 RBIs for the Nationals, who signed Murphy after he was MVP of the 2015 NL Championship Series for New York. Murphy gets his first look at the Mets this year when Washington visits Citi Field.

---

STILL IN SEARCH OF NO. 1

Right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma (0-1, 5.40 ERA) - a 16-game winner last year - tries again for his first win of the season for Seattle when the Mariners play the second game of a four-game weekend series at Oakland. It will be Iwakuma's fourth start of 2017.

Bundy was masterful for the second straight outing as he allowed six hits in seven-plus innings.

Pomeranz allowed two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings. The Red Sox also lost Dustin Pedroia, who was forced to leave the game in the eighth when he was spiked in the left calf by Machado.

Nationals 4, Mets 3 (11 innings)

Sabathia lasted five innings, allowing season highs of four runs and seven hits.

Phillies 4, Braves 3

PHILADELPHIA -- Jeremy Hellickson turned in another solid outing, outdueled Bartolo Colon and got just enough run support to help Philadelphia to a win over Atlanta.

Hellickson allowed two runs and three hits in seven innings. Cesar Hernandez collected three hits and scored two runs as Philadelphia stopped a seven-game losing streak to the Braves.

Colon allowed four runs and 11 hits in seven innings. Freddie Freeman and Adonis Garcia homered for the Braves.

Cardinals 6, Brewers 3

Wainwright struck out nine in five innings for his first win of the season. He also hit a two-run homer and added a two-run bases-loaded single.

Ryan Braun homered for Milwaukee.

LEADING OFF: Mets banged up already, Cubs unis a big sell
April 21, 2017

A look at what's happening around the majors Saturday:
---

METS NEED TO MEND

The ailing Mets continue a series against NL East rival Washington while dealing with a wave of injuries. Jacob deGrom was scratched from his scheduled start Friday night, and first baseman Lucas Duda and infielder Wilmer Flores were placed on the disabled list. Yoenis Cespedes also is likely to miss the three-game series because of a hamstring injury, shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera was out of the lineup Friday with a hamstring problem and catcher Travis d'Arnaud was sidelined with a bruised right wrist. ''I've got a good team,'' Mets manager Terry Collins said. ''They're only good when they're playing.'' DeGrom (0-0, 1.89 ERA) may start against the Nats and Gio Gonzalez (1-0, 1.33), with Sean Gilmartin ready as a backup plan.

THAT'S CUB

Big shocker here: fans are buying up Cubs jerseys in bulk after Chicago ended its 108-year title drought last fall. Kris Bryant has overtaken retired Red Sox slugger David Ortiz as the top jersey seller in the majors, and teammates Anthony Rizzo (second), Javier Baez (fourth) and Kyle Schwarber (fifth) are right behind him. Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw is third, the same position he held behind Ortiz and Mike Trout in the list released during last summer's All-Star break.

STILL SWINGING

Ryan Howard is expected to play his first game with Atlanta's Triple-A affiliate in Gwinnett. The 2006 NL MVP signed a minor league deal with the Braves this month after spending 13 seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies. The 37-year-old had been working out in extended spring training after hitting .196 with 25 home runs and 59 RBIs in 112 games last year.

RESTED AND READY

Cubs ace Jake Arrieta (2-0, 2.89) pitches against Cincinnati coming off six days' rest. Despite losing about 2 mph off his fastball velocity from last season, Arrieta has pitched well this year, striking out 21 batters and walking five over 18 2/3 innings. He got a couple extra days to prepare this week after swapping start days with Jon Lester, a move that kept Arrieta from making consecutive appearances against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

PELFREY RETURNS

Mike Pelfrey is back in the majors to make a spot start with the White Sox after James Shields was put on the disabled list Friday. Pelfrey was 4-10 with a 5.07 ERA in 24 games last year with Detroit and has allowed five earned runs in six innings this season with Triple-A Charlotte. Chicago will face Cleveland right-hander Carlos Carrasco (1-1, 2.33).

Rangers release OF Hamilton after latest knee injury
April 21, 2017

The Texas Rangers released Josh Hamilton from his minor league contract on Friday after the veteran outfielder sustained a right knee injury while rehabilitating his left knee.

Hamilton re-signed with the Rangers in January before undergoing left knee surgery the following month. The former American League MVP was placed on the disabled list at Triple-A Round Rock at the end of spring training and began rehab for his left knee.

"I am disappointed but not discouraged that my knee problems have not allowed me to play this season," Hamilton said in a statement. "I plan to have surgery on my right knee and then evaluate the situation. I want to thank the Rangers and all of the great fans for the support and encouragement. I really appreciate it."

Hamilton, who turns 36 in May, was a five-time All-Star for the Rangers and won MVP honors in 2010 when he led the AL with a .359 average and had 32 homers and 100 RBIs. He hit a career-best 43 homers in 2012 and departed as a free agent to sign with the Angels.

Hamilton's career went into a deep decline and he hit 31 homers in two seasons with the Angels before they dealt him back to the Rangers. He batted .253 with eight homers and 25 RBIs in 2015 while batting injuries.

"Josh will forever hold a place in Rangers history as one of the most talented, charismatic and productive players to wear our uniform," Rangers president of baseball operations and general manager Jon Daniels said in a statement. "We wish him all the best in his upcoming recovery, and with his family."

Hamilton has 200 career homers and 701 RBIs in 1,027 games. Hamilton possesses a career batting average of .290.

Madison Bumgarner lands on DL after dirt bike accident
April 21, 2017

DENVER (AP) Madison Bumgarner was zooming around on a dirt bike during his team's day off when he hit a slippery spot and crashed.

The freak accident landed him on the disabled list for the first time in his big league career Friday and left the San Francisco Giants coping with the loss of their ace as they struggle through a rough start.

The left-hander bruised ribs and a sprained a joint in his pitching shoulder from the wipeout that occurred Thursday. The timetable for his return was not announced - a blow for a team that's last in the NL West.

''I think the main thing is you have to be grateful he's not hurt worse than he is,'' Giants catcher Buster Posey said.

Manager Bruce Bochy said that Bumgarner drove himself to the hotel, called team head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner and went to the hospital, where doctors ran tests that included X-rays, an MRI and a CT scan.

The plan is for him to remain with the team in Denver.

''Here's a young guy, like a lot of us, you think you're invincible,'' Bochy said before the Giants opened a three-game series with the Rockies. ''Our focus, it's on, `Let's get him healthy.' It's happened. Let's get him well and get him back on the mound. Hopefully, it's a lesson learned ... You've got to be careful in some of these activities we do.''

This was Bochy's first day back, too. He missed a two-game series at Kansas City following a heart procedure.

''I feel great. I'm ready to roll. It's good to be back,'' said Bochy, who went in after dealing with an occasional atrial flutter following his workouts. ''Good to be with the club and get back into rhythm, I guess you could say. Glad to be back here.''

Before arriving at the ballpark Friday, Bochy stopped by the room of his injured ace for a visit.

''He's very remorseful, in talking to him,'' Bochy said. ''Unfortunately, the accident happened.''

The 27-year-old Bumgarner, the 2014 World Series MVP, is 0-3 with a 3.00 ERA in four 2017 starts.

Bumgarner has received just five total runs of support in his first four starts, including one run or none in three of them - and he homered twice to drive in two of those.

''We ought to just look forward and go out and play hard baseball and hopefully he'll be back before too long,'' Posey said.

Count pitching coach Dave Righetti as not the biggest fan of days off.

''Off days are the freaking worst,'' Righetti said. ''We don't get many and when we do guys tend to want to go do those things that they're missing out on. Things like this do happen, unfortunately.''

Bochy understands.

''If I was there, sure, I wouldn't have let him on that bike,'' Bochy said. ''I'm sure looking at it now, Madison wishes he wouldn't have gotten on it.''

The Bay Area sports scene has become accustomed to fluke injury stories.

Former second baseman and 2000 NL MVP Jeff Kent broke a bone in his left wrist during spring training in 2002 popping wheelies on his motorcycle, initially saying he had injured himself washing his truck. He missed the initial four games that year, when the Giants reached the World Series and lost to the Angels in Game 7.

NBA guard Monta Ellis had signed a $66 million, six-year deal with the Golden State Warriors after he averaged a career-best 20.2 points during the 2007-08 season. He then sustained a serious ankle injury that summer on his motorized scooter and missed most of the season. It cost him a 30-game suspension without pay, because he wasn't supposed to be riding such a vehicle.

In April 2011, ex-Giants lefty reliever Jeremy Affeldt - who also pitched for Colorado - sprained his right knee and went on the DL after reaching out to catch his then-4-year-old, 60-pound son when the boy jumped off the couch to greet his father.

On Sept. 8 that year, Affeldt sliced his non-throwing hand while separating frozen hamburgers during a barbecue with his family on an off day. The paring knife he was using pushed through a hamburger patty and deep into his hand. Affeldt came within a millimeter of an artery and underwent surgery about eight hours later to repair nerve damage in his pinkie.

San Francisco recalled right-hander Chris Stratton from Triple-A Sacramento to fill the roster spot. Lefty Ty Blach is expected to take Bumgarner's spot in the rotation.

''Anytime you lose a guy like that in the rotation - as much as he means to the team - that's tough,'' Blach said. ''We're going to come together and we'll get him healthy and get him back in the rotation.''

Ailing Mets put 1B Duda, INF Flores on DL; deGrom scratched
April 21, 2017

NEW YORK (AP) Already ailing, the New York Mets scratched pitcher Jacob deGrom from his start Friday night against Washington because of a stiff neck and put first baseman Lucas Duda and infielder Wilmer Flores on the 10-day disabled list.

The banged-up Mets were minus more than them: Slugging outfielder Yoenis Cespedes was likely to miss the three-game series because of a hamstring injury, shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera was out of the lineup with a hamstring problem and catcher Travis d'Arnaud was sidelined with a bruised right wrist.

''I've got a good team,'' Mets manager Terry Collins said. ''They're only good when they're playing.''

A year after the Mets were beset by a bunch of key injuries while still earning an NL wild-card spot, Collins admitted the early-season rash of mishaps has ''been a little frustrating.''

Duda has a hyperextended left elbow and Flores has an infected right knee. Left-hander Sean Gilmartin and infielder T.J. Rivera were recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas - a day earlier, Gilmartin was sent down to the minors in a series of roster moves that included transferring third baseman David Wright to the 60-day disabled list while recovering from neck surgery.

Matt Harvey moved up a day to start in place of deGrom on regular rest. Collins said that if deGrom wasn't able to pitch Saturday against the NL East-leading Nationals, then Gilmartin would start instead.

DeGrom's setback was the latest to seemingly come out of nowhere. Collins said it was ''up in the air'' whether he'd be able to start Saturday, but said deGrom was feeling better.

Cespedes limped out of Thursday night's loss to Philadelphia in the fifth inning. Collins said it was more than a mere cramp but that tests showed it wasn't too serious. Collins said would be prudent to give players a day or two or three off, especially in damp, cool weather, rather than risk losing them ''for three or four weeks.''

Collins said it ''has not been determined'' how many days Cespedes would miss.

The injuries prompted the Mets to play a makeup lineup in the series opener. Jose Reyes shifted from third base to his old spot at shortstop, Rivera started at third and Juan Lagares was in center.

— Thunder 115, Rockets 113— Four of five Thunder starters scored in double figures.

— Clippers 111, Jazz 106— Chris Paul had 34 points, 10 assists. LA leads series, 2-1.

— Bruins 3, Ottawa 2, 2OT— Boston staves off elimination with a goal 30:19 into overtime.

— Arizona 13, Dodgers 5— Diamondbacks scored nine runs in bottom of the 8th.

— Blue Jays 8, Angels 7 (13)— Game ended at 3:46am here in New York.

**********

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Random thoughts with weekend here……..

13) Madison Bumgarner is on the DL with rib/shoulder injuries he got in a dirt-bike accident on an off-day in Denver. Rough news for the Giants.

12) Giants were already 0-4 in Bumgarner’s starts (0-3, 3.00) this season- they scored a total of five runs in the four games.

11) Eric Thames hit 21 homers in 684 plate appearances for Toronto/Seattle in 2011-12, then his career tailed off- he wound up playing three years in Korea. Now he is back in the majors with the Brewers, and he is batting .415 with 8 homers in 62 PA’s, making him an early candidate for Comeback Player of the Century.

10) Cincinnati Reds have to be thrilled with rookie pitcher Amir Garrett, who at one time was a basketball player at St John’s. In his first three big league starts, Garrett is 2-1, 1.83, with 21 strikeouts and only 14 hits allowed in 19.2 IP.

9) Thursday nite, the Pacers led Cleveland 74-49 at halftime; a daring gambler at Ellis Island Casino in Las Vegas wagered $55 at 25-1 odds on the Cavaliers to win this game. He cashed in for $1,375. Not a bad hour’s work.

8) Russell Westbrook was 4-18 in the 4th quarter of Game 2 in Houston; he was 13-25 in first three quarters. Thunder are hard to watch- they have no real second scoring option.

7) Bulls PG Rajon Rondo has a broken thumb, is out indefinitely for the Bulls, who lead Boston 2-0 in their first round series.

6) When you see a baseball game where there are no walks and 26 strikeouts, you assume that:

Randy Johnson and Dwight Golden were pitching
There was a pitchers’ umpire behind the plate.Since the starting pitchers were Patrick Corbin/Clayton Richard, we can safely assume that umpire Gerry Davis is a pitchers’ umpire.

5) NBA referee Danny Crawford has worked 293 playoff games in his career, 33 Finals games.

4) NFL centralized instant replay this season, under assumption that Dean Blandino would lead the effort in New York City to make the replay process more streamlined.

Then Blandino bolted the NFL for a TV job with a yet-to be-named network, leaving the NFL without a logical replacement for him. Mike Pereira would be ideal, but he already has a good job.

3) I wanted to watch a TV show on the IFC channel this week, then I realized I had never seen a show on this channel and had no idea what channel it was on DirecTV (it is 333). You learn something new every day.

2a) Mike D’Antoni was 279-161 as coach of the Phoenix Suns; since he left, the Suns are 332-390 in regular season games.

2b) Oakland A’s were 256-176 while they had Yoenis Cespedes on their roster; since they traded him on July 31, 2014, they are 165-229.

Sometimes you’re better off keeping things the way they are. Not all change is positive.

1— Hope it doesn’t rain in LA in early September; Rams play Colts/Redskins at home on Sept 10th/17th, day after USC plays Stanford/Texas on the 9th/16th. Field will take a beating.

If it were to rain during that time, you’ll get a quagmire like the 1977 playoff game in the Coliseum when the Rams lost 14-7 to a very inferior Minnesota team. It was so muddy it was hard to tell which players were on which team.

Why did I remind myself of that?

MLB roundup: Cubs ride HR barrage past Reds
April 22, 2017

CINCINNATI -- Willson Contreras hit his first career grand slam and Anthony Rizzo and Jason Heyward each hit three-run shots, lifting the Chicago Cubs to a 12-8 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Great American Ball Park.

Contreras went 3-for-4 with a double, four RBIs and four runs. Heyward also had four RBIs. The home run barrage helped Jake Arrieta (3-0) earn the victory despite allowing four runs in the first. Arrieta struck out eight and didn't walk a batter, but allowed five earned runs and a pair of home runs.

The Cubs (10-7) have won four straight and 20 of 24 against the Reds (9-9), who've lost four straight.

Joey Votto hit a three-run homer and Eugenio Suarez hit a solo shot to briefly put Cincinnati ahead in the first. Suarez added a solo shot in the eighth off Justin Grimm to snap a 14 2/3-inning scoreless streak for Chicago's bullpen.

Yankees 11, Pirates 5

PITTSBURGH -- New York has been searching for more offense on the road and found it against Pittsburgh, surging for 11 runs after the fifth inning in a come-from-behind victory.

Starlin Castro got the Yankees moving with a three-run home run off Pirates starter Jameson Taillon in the sixth. Ronald Torreyes followed with a two-run single to give the Yankees their first lead of the day later that inning. After the Pirates battled back to tie it, another five-run outburst in the eighth put the Yankees over the top.

Chris Carter hit a three-run pinch-hit home run off Pirates reliever Felipe Rivero (1-1) to put New York ahead for good. It was Carter's first home run of the season and first with the Yankees after he hit 41 last year with Milwaukee.

Nationals 3, Mets 1

NEW YORK -- Washington's Gio Gonzalez continued his mastery of New York at Citi Field, when the left-hander carried a no-hitter into the sixth and earned the win with 6 1/3 strong innings.

The no-hit bid for Gonzalez ended when Juan Lagares delivered a clean single up the middle with none out in the sixth The hit sent Jose Reyes, who led off with a walk, to second. Reyes scored on a one-out single by Asdrubal Cabrera, but Gonzalez struck out Jay Bruce and Neil Walker to end the threat.

That combination made a winner of Lance Lynn (2-1), who allowed three hits with two walks while striking out seven.

The Cardinals managed just one unearned run off Chase Anderson, who gave up six hits and a walk with six strikeouts.

Indians 7, White Sox 0

CHICAGO -- Carlos Carrasco allowed three hits while pitching eight scoreless innings to help Cleveland extend its winning streak to five games.

The Indians shut out the White Sox on back-to-back nights after Corey Kluber limited them to three hits in a complete-game shutout Friday.

Michael Brantley, Edwin Encarnacion and Jose Ramirez homered for the reigning American League champions.

The White Sox haven't scored in 23 consecutive innings.

Orioles 4, Red Sox 2

BALTIMORE -- Trey Mancini and Jonathan Schoop hit back-to-back homers in the fourth inning off Boston knuckleballer Steven Wright, and that helped Baltimore starter Jayson Aquino get his first major league win.

It also extended the Orioles' winning streak to four games.

Aquino (1-0) gave up two runs on six hits in six innings and needed to escape jams in each of his last three innings.

Rays 6, Astros 3

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tampa Bay used a four-run sixth to record its seventh come-from-behind win.

Rays shortstop Tim Beckham had three hits out of the No. 9 spot in the batting order, and he drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth.

Evan Longoria and Peter Bourjos each had two RBIs for the Rays.

Evan Gattis and Jose Altuve hit homers for Houston, which had only two other hits and went 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position.
