Game of the Day: Yankees at Red Sox
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox (-104, 7.5)

The Boston Red Sox already got a chance to play against Jacoby Ellsbury when they visited the New York Yankees earlier this month. The home fans will get their first chance to welcome back the two-time World Series champion when the Yankees make their first visit of the season to Boston on Tuesday. Ellsbury is off to a strong start for first-place New York and had five hits against the Red Sox when the Yankees took three of four at home from April 10-13.

Boston went through an emotional weekend at home with several tributes to the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings and ended up splitting a four-game set with the Baltimore Orioles. The Red Sox overcame a five-run deficit to take Sunday’s game and nearly overcame a six-run hole before leaving the tying run on third base at the end of Monday’s 7-6 setback. The Yankees dropped two of three to the Tampa Bay Rays over the weekend, allowing 27 runs in the first two games before recovering for a 5-1 victory in 12 innings in Sunday’s finale.

TV:
7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, YES (New York), NESN (Boston)

LINE HISTORY:
The Red Sox opened as -133 home favorites and now sit at -104.

POWER RANKINGS:
New York (-186), Boston (-165).

INJURY REPORT:
N/A.

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Yankees RH Masahiro Tanaka (2-0, 2.05 ERA) vs. Red Sox LH Jon Lester (2-2, 2.17)

Tanaka will get his first taste of the historic rivalry after his turn did not come up during the first meeting between the teams. The Japan native has been everything New York expected when they brought him in during the offseason and is coming off his best start after holding the Chicago Cubs to two hits over eight scoreless innings last week. Tanaka has notched 28 strikeouts while issuing only two walks in 22 total innings.

Lester retired the first 16 batters he faced and outdueled Chris Sale to earn a win at the Chicago White Sox last week, striking out nine over eight frames. The 30-year-old beat the Yankees in his previous turn, surrendering two runs on six hits in 6 2/3 innings, and has yielded two or fewer earned runs in each of his four starts. Lester gave up a single to Ellsbury and walked him once in the first meeting.

TRENDS:

* Under is 4-0 in Lester's last four starts vs. Yankees.
* Under is -1 in Lester's last five home starts vs. Yankees.
* Over is 5-2 in the last seven meetings in Boston.
* Yankees are 1-4 in the last five meetings in Boston.

CONSENSUS:
The wagers are split 50-50 between the Yankees and Red Sox.

Rehab assingment coming soon for Kershaw

Clayton Kershaw looks as though he will get his first rehab start Friday according to Ken Gurnick. The Los Angeles Dodgers ace and 2013 National League Cy Young winner has yet to see action this season due to muscle strain in his back.

Kershaw has been throwing bullpen sessions for the Dodgers, but has yet to face any true game situations this season. There is no specific date as to when Kershaw will be back in the rotation for the Dodgers, but he can only be on rehab assignment for a maximum of 30 days.

Under continues to trend for the National League

Though MLB can be notoriously balanced over a 162-game season, but bettors have found solace wagering in the National League in the past week. The NL is carrying an O/U record of 16-28-4 (58.3 percent under rate) over the past seven days of action.

The record has been even more stellar between Sunday and Monday, with the NL failing to top the total nine of 14 times (3-9-2) in the past two days.

There are 15 games of the schedule in the MLB Tuesday, with seven in the NL.

White Sox pitcher Sale likely to go on disabled list

Chicago White Sox left-hander Chris Sale will be placed on the disabled list with a flexor muscle strain, Dan Hayes of CSNChicago.com reported Monday.

An MRI showed no ligament damage, and the White Sox hope Sale won't miss more than 15 days.

Nonetheless, the outlook is worse than it was earlier Monday, when manager Robin Ventura said Sale was likely to miss his scheduled start on Tuesday against Detroit because of general muscle soreness, but might pitch on Wednesday. Obviously that won't happen now.

Ventura's statement came after Sale threw a career-high 127 pitches in his previous start.

Right-hander Andre Rienzo, who was called up from Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday, was scheduled to pitch Wednesday, but he will pitch on Tuesday instead.

Rockies' Cuddyer put on disabled list

Colorado Rockies right fielder/first baseman Michael Cuddyer, who won the National League batting title last season, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Monday with a hamstring injury.

Cuddyer injured his left hamstring last Thursday. He sat out the games played on Saturday and Sunday as a member of the active roster before the team decided to place him on the disabled list.

Cuddyer is eligible to return on May 3 when the Rockies host the Mets.

Utility man Charlie Culberson was recalled from Triple-A Colorado Springs to take Cuddyer's place on the active roster.

AL Central Showdown

April 22, 2014

Chicago White Sox (10-10) at Detroit Tigers (9-7)

First pitch: Tuesday, 7:05 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Detroit -140, Chicago +130, Total: 7

An early AL Central battle heats up on Tuesday night as the Tigers look to even their four-game set against the White Sox.

Chicago has been playing some solid baseball this season despite having a team that went just 65-99 (.389) in 2013. The club has not played very well in its past two series though, losing 4-of-6 games and being outscored 27-8 in four losses to Boston and Texas. The White Sox bounced back on Sunday with a huge 16-2 victory over the Rangers, snapping their four-game skid as they recorded eight extra-base hits (3 HR) and yielded just two hits. They followed that win up with a 3-1 victory over the Tigers on Monday behind the strong effort of starter John Danks, who allowed just one run in six innings of work. First Baseman Jose Abreu has provided much of the offense over their last two wins, going 5-for-9 with a home run, four RBI and three runs.

The Tigers took 2-of-3 games against the Angels over the weekend while allowing Los Angeles to score only three runs combined over the final two contests. They did manage to get nine hits in Monday’s loss, but went a horrendous 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. Hoping to put Chicago over .500 with a win will be LHP Charlie Leesman (0-2, 1.59 ERA in Triple-A this season) who is starting just his second career game. On the other side of the diamond, former Cy Young Award winner RHP Justin Verlander (2-1, 2.08 ERA) will toe the rubber for Detroit. So far on the year, the White Sox have gone 4-6 on the road, while the Tigers have started 7-4 at Comerica Park in 2014. This series has been a cakewalk for Detroit recently, as the team is 24-14 against Chicago since the start of 2012 while going a very impressive 14-5 at home. One trend favoring the White Sox favor is that the Tigers are just 1-9 in the past two seasons in Verlander’s starts after he allowed no earned runs in his previous outing. On the other hand, Chicago is just 44-72 (.379) in night games over the same timeframe.

Charlie Leesman is a virtual unknown in the MLB community, as he has pitched in just eight games (1 start) at the major-league level so far. In those games, he has thrown 15.1 innings with a 7.04 ERA and 2.09 WHIP, while allowing two home runs and tallying just 13 strikeouts compared to 16 walks. He has done well in the high minors though, starting 45 games at Triple-A since the start of 2012 while going 16-15 with a tremendous 2.92 ERA. Leesman will need to pitch carefully when facing OF Torii Hunter (.264) as he has gone 4-for-8 (1 run, 1 SB) over his past two games, while OF Austin Jackson (.309) leads the team in batting average.

Superstar and two-time MVP, 1B Miguel Cabrera, has yet to find his rhythm this year as he is hitting just .206 with 1 HR and 7 RBI over his first 16 games. If Leesman is not able to go deep into the game, this could spell even more trouble for the White Sox since their bullpen is 3-6 with a 5.48 ERA, and has gone just 2-for-6 in save opportunities. Closer Matt Lindstrom (3.00 ERA, 2 saves) earned the save on Monday night and has not given up an earned run (2 unearned runs) over his past six outings, but did blow two saves in that time.

Justin Verlander is one of the best pitchers in baseball, and he is at it again this season, allowing just 10 runs (6 earned) over his first 26 innings on the mound. He’s allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his starts on the year while not giving up a home run, and has 15 strikeouts over his past 12 frames after starting the year with just 5 K's in his first 14 innings. Verlander has actually not done too well when facing the White Sox over his 29 career starts, going 14-12 (15-14 team record) with a 4.21 ERA (1.19 WHIP) and has been absolutely pounded in his past two outings, both losses. He allowed 23 combined hits (3 HR) in those two starts, which led to 12 runs, while striking out just seven in 13 innings. The players on Chicago's roster have not hit for much of an average against Verlander, but DH Adam Dunn (.200, 3 HR, 7 RBI, 11 K’s), OF Alejandro De Aza (.190, 2 HR, 3 RBI, 8 K’s) and C Tyler Flowers (.300, 2 HR, 2 RBI) have all hit him for power. SS Alexei Ramirez (.241, 1 HR), OF Dayan Viciedo (.200, 1 HR) and 2B Gordon Beckham (.194, 1 HR, 7 K’s) also have a home run in their career against the righty.

The Tigers' bullpen has pitched to a 4-1 record with a 4.69 ERA and seven homers allowed so far in 48 IP this season while getting a save in 4-of-6 opportunities. Joe Nathan (7.04 ERA, 3 saves) was acquired in the offseason to shut down the end of games for the Detroit pitching staff, but has already blown two of his five save chances and has surrendered two home runs in just 7.2 frames.

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Five kids have transferred from South Florida, one of whom was Stan Heath's son; USF will be a team to watch going forward.

-- Diamondbacks are 5-18 and sinking like a rock. A $100M rock.

-- Odd stat from Wall Street Journal; 24% of women in Italy aged 49+ haven't had a child; thats the highest percentage of any country in Europe.

-- There were tickets for Hawk-Pacer game last night selling for less than $10.

-- Oakland A's have some good relief pitchers, but no closer; thats a problem.

-- NFL pushed back its schedule release to tonight, so we'll be on top of that in this space tomorrow.

*****

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but.......

13) Albert Pujols hit two HRs Tuesday, becoming 26th big leaguer with 500 career homers, as thew Angels won 7-2 at Washington; Pujols has 19 RBI in 20 games, as reports of his demise were greatly exaggerated.

12) When Pujols broke into pro ball with Peoria of Midwest League in 2000, the starting pitcher on the other team in his first game was the Dodgers' Josh Beckett.

11) Dodgers lost 3-2 in 12 innings to Philly, when Domonic Brown doubled to left-center scoring Carlos Ruiz, who reached on a dropped fly ball by $21M a year Carl Crawford, who is hitting .217. Maybe the worst baseball contract ever.

10) Dodgers have made 23 errors in 21 games; maybe the next manager (Dusty Baker??) will have better luck tightening them up on defense.

9) Ike Davis is the first major leaguer ever to hit grand slams for two different teams in the same season; not only that, but both were obviously in April, and both came against Cincinnati. Doing it in April may never be done again.

8) Speaking of the Pirates, how does Travis Snider get suspended for only two games? Maldonado doesn't slug anyone if Snider doesn't come off the bench first (their dugout is on 3rd base side), but he gets five games because he landed the better punch? Think about it: there are nine Pirates on the field with Gomez; Maldonado rushed on the field to even the sides a little bit. Punishment should've been equal.

7) Proof I watch too much TV: are we really supposed to believe Jessica Simpson goes to Weight Watchers meetings with a bunch of housewives in Orange County, or wherever she lives? Wonder how much cash WW wasted on her as a spokesman?

6) Something you don't see every day; no walks, 28 strikeouts in the Marlins' 1-0 win at Atlanta. Fernandez-Wood were pitchers, Doug Eddings the umpire. It isn't surprising that all four Eddings games this year have gone under the total.

5) A 10-year old kid in Ohio was suspended from school for pointing his finger at another kid and pretending to shoot him. You can't make this stuff up.

4) I wouldn't want to be the guy answering to Seattle Mariners' ownership these days; they somehow hired Lloyd McLendon as manager- guy was 336-446 as the Pirates' manager, then sat near Jim Leyland in Detroit for a few years- they had to come up someone better, with all the money they spent on players last winter. By the way, Seattle is 7-13 and lost its last eight games, last five to Miami/Houston.

3) Bulls lost in OT to Washington; has an NBA team ever played an OT playoff game before and had two subs take the most shots on the team? Ever?

2) A 15-year old kid survived a plane ride from California to Hawai'i after he stowed away in one of the plane's wheel wells- apparently the boy wanted to see his mother, who is in Somalia. That plane flew as high as 38,000 feet; kid defied the odds by surviving the flight. Someday he'll make a bundle on the movie rights.

1) NFL schedule comes out tonight, then the people on ESPN's daily NFL show will actually have concrete things to talk about. Too much speculation, with all the draft stuff going on-- none of it means anything until May 8.

MLB teams with the biggest betting home/away split
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

For a handful of major-league teams, game location has played a significant role in their early-season fortunes. Some clubs are off to incredible starts at home but have struggled to maintain that momentum on the road. Others have succeeded away from their own stadium but have disappointed the locals.

Here are five teams with the largest home/road splits (units in parentheses):

Milwaukee Brewers (+32 at home, +978 on road)

Bet you didn't see this coming. The Brewers have been the major leagues' road warriors, becoming the first team to win nine of its first 10 games away from home since the 1994 Atlanta Braves. The offensive numbers - Milwaukee is batting .306 with a league-best 60 runs and 15 homers in 10 road games - are too good to sustain, and Milwaukee's next seven road games are against division power St. Louis and formidable Cincinnati.

Miami Marlins (+481 at home, -631 on road)

The Marlins are doing exactly what's expected of most major league teams, triumphing in their own stadium while scuffling on the road. Miami's splits are more pronounced than the others, with a 9-4 record at Marlins Park and an 0-6 mark everywhere else. Apparently Miami's pitching staff enjoys the comforts of home, posting a 2.54 ERA in 117 innings in Miami, good for fifth-best in the league, but a 6.16 ERA outside Florida which ranks second-worst.

Los Angeles Dodgers (-142 at home, +500 on road)

Fans supporting the team with the highest payroll in the majors probably wouldn't mind seeing more victories in their home park. Los Angeles has scuffled to a 4-4 home record but has thrived away from Dodger Stadium, posting an 8-3 mark with a 2.35 ERA that ranks second in the majors. The Dodgers have a great chance to pad their home record this week, welcoming the Philadelphia Phillies for four games before facing Colorado in a three-game set.

New York Mets (-290 at home, +479 at home)

New York has brought great woe to Citi Field so far in 2014, winning just three of its first nine games there while posting a 6-3 mark on the road. The home struggles can be explained, at least in part, by an opening schedule that includes series against Washington, Philadelphia and Atlanta. Add in the fact that the Mets caught the host Arizona Diamondbacks in the throes of a terrible slump, and the early-season wins disparity makes even more sense.

Detroit Tigers (+304 at home, -173 on road)

The defending Central Division champions racked up 51 home wins last season and are well on their way to repeating the feat, winning seven of their first 10 games at Comerica Park. That hot home start has masked a sub-par road showing, with the Tigers going 2-3 - a stretch that includes two one-sided losses to lowly San Diego. Detroit has eight straight games against divisional opponents beginning Friday. It went 47-29 against the AL Central last year.

Game of the Day: Phillies vs. Dodgers

Philadelphia Phillies vs. Los Angeles Dodgers (-170)

Cole Hamels makes his season debut Wednesday when the visiting Philadelphia Phillies aim for their fourth straight win against the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are struggling offensively after a strong start. The Phillies moved to 10-10 overall with Tuesday’s 3-2 win in 10 innings and are hoping Hamels can provide a much-needed boost to the team’s starting rotation. Hamels, who landed on the disabled list with left biceps tendinitis, pitched at least six innings in 28 of his 33 starts last season.

The Dodgers received a scare when second baseman Dee Gordon left Tuesday's game after hitting his head on Jayson Nix’s knee on a steal of third base, but he passed a concussion test and could be available Wednesday. Shortstop Hanley Ramirez is 2-for-20 since being hit on the left hand by a pitch from the Giants’ Ryan Vogelsong, but manager Don Mattingly doesn’t appear concerned. “He’s not swinging the bat like a guy whose hand is hurting,” Mattingly told reporters. “He’s just a touch off.”

Adrian Gonzalez is 8-for-27 with two homers against the 30-year-old, who is 3-0 with a 2.22 ERA in four career starts at Dodger Stadium.

Greinke has been a model of consistency over his first four starts, and he’s gone 10-1 with a 1.71 ERA in his last 15 starts since Aug. 5, 2013. Hamels to get first start against swinging Dodgers

The Philadelphia Phillies are finally getting ace Cole Hamels in their rotation Wednesday. Hamels, who started the season on the disabled list, will get his first start against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers are fairly average in every major batting statistics, except one. The Dodgers currently have the most strikeouts in the major's this season with 187 in 687 plate appearances in their first 20 games. That means that a little more than 27 percent of the Dodgers plate appearances are SO.

Orioles' 3B Machado to begin rehab assignment

Baltimore Orioles' third baseman Manny Machado is scheduled to begin his rehab assignment Friday at the club's single A team in Frederick.

Machado, who is recovering from surgery to repair a ligament in his left knee last October, played in his third extended spring training game Tuesday and will play one more game in Sarasota, Fla., on Wednesday before joining the Single-A squad.

Unhittable Harang on the mound for Braves

The Atlanta Braves have the best collective ERA in the major's (1.52) despite having serious injury concerns on the mound and have found a major revelation in Aaron Harang.

Harang has the second best ERA in the MLB sporting a ridiculous 0.70 through four games, including bringing a no-hitter into the seventh inning into two of his starts this season. Harang has also held opposing hitters to the lowest batting average of anyone in the MLB (.110).

Harang and the Braves are -149 favs to top the marlins (+137) Wednesday.
