Orioles' SS J.J. Hardy, questionable Monday

Hardy suffered an apparent right hamstring injury and had to leave Sunday's game. He is questionable for Monday against the Red Sox.

Rockies' Carlos Gonzalez, questionable Monday

Gonzalez needed to leave Sunday's game with left knee tendinitis and is questionable for Monday against the Giants.

Kershaw passes test with no pain

Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw appears ready for a rehab assignment after hurling a 51-pitch simulated game on Sunday.

The two-time Cy Young Award winner did not report any problems following the workout. Kershaw has been on the disabled list with an upper back problem.

A source told the Los Angeles Times that Kershaw could rejoin the Dodgers on their next road trip, which is from April 29 through May 7.

The left hander reached 90 mph during Sunday's effort, according to manager Don Mattingly.

"It was full effort for me," Kershaw told truebluela.com. "For a 10 a.m. sim game, that's probably all I got."

Kershaw had been scheduled to throw only two innings, but was allowed to pitch a third inning. It was his first time throwing without restrictions since his Opening Day start in Australia nearly one month ago.

Kershaw threw all his pitches without pain, and completed his normal meticulous 34-pitch pregame ritual.

Brewers' Gomez, Pirates' Snider ejected after brawl

Milwaukee Brewers center fielder Carlos Gomez and Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Travis Snider were ejected from Sunday's game after a brawl broke out in the third inning.

Brewers bench coach Jerry Narron also was ejected in the melee.

Both teams' benches cleared when Gomez and Pirates starting pitcher Gerrit Cole got in a shouting match with each other following' Gomez triple with two outs in the third. Cole, upset that Gomez flipped his bat after hitting the ball, went over to third base to confront Gomez after he slid in safely.

Gomez stepped toward Cole before the benches cleared, including the bullpens of each team. Gomez and Snider shoved each other and Gomez fell to the ground.

Pirates catcher Russell Martin was restrained by teammate Gaby Sanchez as he headed off the field.

Yankees' Nova headed to disabled list

New York Yankees' right-handed pitcher Ivan Nova is headed to the disabled list with a partial tear of a ligament in his right elbow.

Nova left Saturday night's game versus Tampa Bay in the fifth inning after feeling discomfort in the elbow. An MRI after the game revealed the injury. He will be re-evaluated Monday in New York, by Yankees' team doctors.

Phillies' Hamels closing in on return

The Philadelphia Phillies, who are 8-10, are scheduled to play their 21st game of the season Wednesday at Los Angeles. Left-hander Cole Hamels (left biceps tendinitis) will be activated before that game and make his 2014 debut, meaning that a wait of sorts will be over for manager Ryne Sandberg.

His projected rotation for this season will finally be healthy. That rotation was bolstered with the late addition of free agent A.J. Burnett, whom the Phillies signed on Feb. 16. That was right at the outset of spring training, by which time Hamels was behind as the result of the biceps tendinitis he had developed in November.

"Looking at the rotation once we did sign Burnett in the spring and the possibilities, we'll see it next week," Sandberg said, "when Hamels is in there and we start to see him pitch and see the rotation in complete strength. I've been waiting for that day."

The addition of Hamels will give the Phillies three bona fide No. 1 starters as he joins Burnett and left-hander Cliff Lee.

In addition, fifth starter Roberto Hernandez had given the Phillies a chance to win in every outing before Sunday, when he was lifted after giving up two hits to start the fifth. Both those runners scored, giving the Rockies a 6-3 lead in a game the Phillies came back to win 10-9.

The Phillies' other starter is Kyle Kendrick, who has lost seven consecutive decisions, including two this year, but in four starts this season is 0-2 with a 3.60 ERA.

"So all in all, it's the makings of a solid rotation," Sandberg said. "So to finally have that possibility and to see that (with the return of Hamels) -- I'm anxious for that."

Game of the Day: Rangers at Athletics
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics (+126, 6.5)

Yu Darvish has been terrific this season, but the Oakland Athletics have posed a constant challenge for the Texas Rangers' ace. Darvish hopes to solve his prior issues against the Athletics when the teams begin a three-game set in Oakland on Monday. Texas also will try to supply Darvish with some offensive support after scoring a total of seven runs in his first three starts.

There were plenty of runs in the Rangers' most recent game on Sunday, although most of them - 16 of the 18 - were scored by the Chicago White Sox. Texas managed only two hits - both singles - as its five-game winning streak came to an ugly end. Oakland, meanwhile, completed a three-game sweep versus the Houston Astros on Sunday thanks in large part to Josh Donaldson (3-for-4, three RBIs).

TV:
10:05 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), CSN California (Oakland)

LINE HISTORY:
The Athletics opened as slight +115 home dogs and have been bet to +126. The run total is currently at 6.5.

POWER RANKINGS:
Oakland (-181), Texas (-136)

INJURY REPORT:
Oakland: Yoenis Cespedes - probable (heel)

PITCHING MATCHUP:
Rangers RH Yu Darvish (1-0, 0.82 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Dan Straily (1-1, 5.40)

Darvish did not allow a run over 15 innings in his first two starts before yielding two in seven frames in Wednesday's eventual 3-2 win over Seattle. The 27-year-old native of Japan has 23 strikeouts against four walks and has held opponents to a .185 average. However, his lifetime numbers against the Athletics (1-6, 4.30 ERA) include an 0-4 mark with a 4.13 ERA last season.

Straily lasted only 3 2/3 innings in his last outing - an eventual 10-9 win over the Angels last Tuesday. He has surrendered four home runs in 16 2/3 innings this season, although no current members of the Rangers have ever homered against him. Elvis Andrus has endured significant struggles against Straily, going 0-for-14 with five strikeouts against the 25-year-old Californian.

TRENDS:

* Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings in Oakland.
* Under is 6-2 in the last eight meetings.
* Rangers are 0-4 in the last four meetings.
* Rangers are 0-6 in Darvish's last six starts vs. Athletics

CONSENSUS:
Fifty-three percent of the wagers are on the Rangers.

Who's Not Hot - NL Edition

April 21, 2014

There are a few teams in the National League who are really burning a hole in the pockets of their bettors. Two in particular are really down in the dumps, and though there is a lot of season still left to be played. Baseball betting though, is about trends, and all too often, teams which get out of the blocks in bad shape, end up finishing up in bad shape as well.

Arizona Diamondbacks (5-16, -$1,163) – There isn't a more embarrassing team in the bigs right now than the D'Backs. Losing Patrick Corbin for the season was always going to hurt, but it shouldn't have hurt this bad. Wade Miley and the rest of this pitching staff has been atrocious, posting a 5.70 team ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. Arizona only has three quality starts in 21 games, something which is inexplicably bad and easily the worst mark in the majors, and to make matters worse, the defense has committed 17 errors, which isn't helping out either. In spite of the fact that Mark Trumbo and Paul Goldschmidt are off to great starts this season, things in the desert really are grim and aren't going to likely end up getting any better either. The pitchers on this club simply have to get better in a hurry.

Chicago Cubs (5-12, -$626) – The Cubs were mathematically eliminated from the 2014 playoffs back in the summer of 2012, and in the NL Central, they clearly aren't getting to 75 wins this year. Matters might improve for the loveable losers from Wrigley Field, but not if their offense can't improve. During the week, the team was shut out for 18 innings in a double-dip in the Bronx, and the team now has scored two runs or fewer in four of its last five games. The good news? Arizona's lousy pitching staff is going to be coming to town this week for four games. Something has to give in the Windy City, though we aren't sure whether it is going to be the Cubs' bats or the Diamondbacks' arms.

Pittsburgh Pirates (8-11, -$394) – "Grilled Cheese" was unstoppable last season, and it goes without saying that one of the reasons why the Pirates got into the playoffs was because of Jason Grilli only blowing two saves all year long. He blew two in as many days against the Brewers over the weekend, and that's a bad sign as well. Something just doesn't seem quite as right about these Pirates to start the season. Neil Walker isn't going to keep up his torrid home run pace, and the Ike Davis trade never made sense from the get go. Now, Grilli is blowing saves left and right, and that could bring some instability to the back end of the bullpen. The end result? The Bucs are one of the three teams in the NL to have cost bettors over $300 this year, though we do have to remind you that had Grilli shut the door in both of those save opportunities, this would be a team winning money for the campaign at 10-9 at the moment.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Memphis 111, Oklahoma City 105 ot-- Knicks' castoff Beno Udrih scored 14 points in 14:00 off the bench for the Grizzlies.

-- Clippers 138, Warriors 98-- I'm sure Golden State's micro-managing owner just loved this game-- Clippers were up 26 at the half.

-- Evan Gattis hit a walkoff tater in 10th inning, Braves beat Miami 4-2. Marlins are now 0-7 on the road.

-- White Sox' Chris Sale (arm) becomes latest star pitcher to go on the DL.

-- Bob Uecker is actually getting a second statue at Miller Park; this one will be in the last row of the upper deck. Uecker is one of my heroes, for sure.

-- NFL pushed back its schedule release to Wednesday, so we'll be on top of that in this space on Thursday.

*****

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) Tennessee acted quickly after getting turned down by Louisiana Tech's Michael White; they hired Donnie Tyndall of Southern Miss as its new hoop coach.

12) White played for Ole Miss; he is highly connected. His dad is AD at Duke; one brother is AD at Buffalo, another is associate AD at Louisiana Tech, so he would've been leaving his brother behind for a job that Cuonzo Martin couldn't wait to get away from. Not great to be hoop coach at a football school.

11) Speaking of tough jobs, Butler has had four basketball players transfer since February, the latest being Cavalier coach Mike Brown's son. They seriously may regret thinking they were bigger than they are, jumping to the Big East, and likewise, the Big East may regret inviting them into the league.

10) Coaching in the NBA has got to be like working in an insane asylum; Knicks fired Mike Woodson a year after he went 54-28- he was 37-45 this year. You knew Phil Jackson is going to bring in his own guy to coach; this was a formality, buit the concpet of job security doesn't exist in the NBA.

Last year, George Karl, Vinny Del Negro and Lionel Hollins all won 56+ games, and all three got fired. Not only that, none of the three have gotten another job.

9) Someone on talk radio in NYC Monday wanted Knicks to hire Patrick Ewing as its next coach; if Ewing was serious about being a head coach, he wouldn't have turned down the chance to coach in the D-League, which he did.

8) Duke actually poached a player from Rice; this is classic. Sean Obi, 6-9, 265 he made only 53% of his foul shots for the Owls, but has three years left to play in college. Coach K is an educator, thats all the TV people preach, but he poached Seth Curry from Liberty, the Hood kid from Mississippi State and now someone from freakin' Rice. Thats what happens when all your own recruits bolt to the NBA.

7) Prince Fielder has already been walked intentionally nine times this year, but a more amazing stat is this: Mets' SS Ruben Tejada, a complete stiff, has been intentionally passed four times, because he bats ahead of the pitcher. Tejada has a lifetime average of .257, is hitting .204 this year. Oy.

6) Why do the Mets play so much better on the road than at home?

5) Houston Texans' owner Bob McNair went to college at South Carolina, which is obviously where Jadeveon Clowney went; think that factors in to the Texans' decision at all? I have no idea, but I'd hope it does not. .

4) For whatever reason, Seattle Seahawks took Terrelle Pryor off the Raiders' hands, and actually gave them a 7th-round pick for him. Why?

3) Like I said up above, NFL schedule is coming out Wednesday, whcih is good, because I am tired of reading about the draft; pushing it back until May seems like a bad idea. Too many workouts, too much speculation, not enough real news.

2) Odd stat: New York Rangers have lost Game 2 in their last seven playoff series, and five of those seven were at home.

1) I can't imagine running 26 miles; actually don't think its that healthy to do it, but kudos to the marathon runners Monday-- takes lot of mental toughness to train that hard. If I drive 26 miles, I'm looking for some Cherry Coke and Doritos, that or a drive-thru window, but thats just me.
