Hottest team: Red Sox (10-2 last 12)
Drew Pomeranz didn’t have the debut Boston envisioned, failing to get an out in the fourth inning after being staked to an 8-0 lead against the Giants. The bats and the bullpen bailed the Red Sox out. Hanley Ramirez’s three home runs helped fuel a two-game sweep of San Francisco, which combined with New York’s third straight win over Baltimore, moved Boston into first place in the AL East. Over their current run, the Red Sox have won every time they score at least four runs, averaging 7.2 runs over their 10 victories. A nine-game homestand at Fenway continues with Minnesota coming into town for a four-game set, and even though the Twins come off consecutive wins at Detroit, they still own MLB’s worst road record (15-30). Steven Wright (11-5, 2.78 ERA) owns the lowest ERA among Red Sox starters and can catch Rick Porcello for the team lead in wins if he gets the victory here. Wright surrendered a single unearned run over 7.1 innings in an 8-1 triumph at Minnesota on June 10. Tyler Duffey (5-6, 5.23) was the losing pitcher that night, giving up six runs on 10 hits. It’s therefore no surprise to see Boston so (-220) heavily favored.

Coldest team: White Sox (1-6 last seven)
After surrendering an 11th-inning home run to Leonys Martin, the second walk-off blast they were subjected to in Seattle, the White Sox return to Chicago hoping to avoid a seventh loss in eight games. They’re in danger of falling three games under .500 for the second time, so this four-game series reeks of desperation for both teams since the Tigers come in having lost two straight against the lowly Twins to fall back in the Wild Card chase. Detroit swept the first three meetings between these teams, but dropped two of three in Chicago in mid-June. They’ll play one another 14 more times this season, so it will be interesting to see how both teams respond in this series opener. James Shields (4-11, 5.10) was brought in to help aid a playoff push, so it’s fitting that he gets the ball for Chicago with its season collapsing. After falling flat on his face by giving up 23 runs over three starts where he lasted a total of 8.2 innings, Shields has rebounded by just six runs over 28.1 innings over his last four outings.

Hottest pitcher: Chris Tillman (13-2, 3.29 ERA)
Washington’s Stephen Strasburg (13-0, 2.51) has been brilliant, but we’ll touch on his bid to stay perfect against the Dodgers down below. While the Nationals are 16-1 in Strasburg’s starts, the Orioles are 17-3 when their ace gets the ball, which includes a perfect 12-0 at home. Unfortunately, the Birds find themselves in Yankee Stadium hoping Tillman can prevent a four-game sweep that has cost them their cushion in the division. Tillman has pitched in a pair of victories over the Yanks at Camden Yards, but was hit hard in the last start on June 3 as New York homered three times and produced five runs in 5.2 innings. Tillman closed July by taking his second loss in Seattle, but is a perfect 3-0 this month, giving up just three runs in 21 innings. Tillman snapped Baltimore’s longest losing streak of the season at five games on July 5 with a 5-1 win at Dodger Stadium and will try to prevent a fifth consecutive loss here.

Coldest pitcher: Mike Pelfrey (2-9, 4.95 ERA)
Pelfrey opened July in danger of losing his spot in the rotation, but rebounded by giving the Tigers a pair of starts where the he got into the seventh inning having allowed only one run at Tampa Bay and Toronto. He then couldn’t get out of the second inning on Saturday against Kansas City, walking four of the 14 batters he faced and giving up five runs. Detroit has seen the ‘under’ prevail in nine of its last 10 game, with Pelfrey’s July 16 start serving as the anomaly. The Tigers have scored a total of four runs over the past three games and haven’t scored more than four times in a single contest since way back on July 6, so Pelfrey has little room for error in this matchup with the White Sox, who he’s 1-1 against this season.

Biggest UNDER run: Rays (10-2-2 last 14)
There’s competition here given the aforementioned Tigers run and the ‘under’ on an 8-0 steak in Orioles games, but we’ll concentrate on the Rays here since there’s a pretty good pitching matchup worth examining. Tampa Bay scored 21 runs over the past two days in victories in Colorado, but will now transition to one of the friendliest pitcher’s parks in baseball out in Oakland. Lefty Matt Moore (5-7, 4.33) has pitched in five consecutive games where the number has come in below the posted total. Meanwhile, A’s ace Sonny Gray (4-8, 5.12) is pitching to potentially earn himself a ticket out of town and on to a contender. Although his numbers are horrific, the 26-year-old righty has pitched much better of late, allowing here earned runs or fewer in six of his last eight starts. Gray gave up three homers in a 7-6 win at Tampa Bay on May 15, so we’ll see if his improved form yields better results. Oddsmakers have set this total at 8.

Biggest OVER run: Dodgers (8-2, last 10 road games)
At a time where most teams are playing lower-scoring games, this trend of the Dodgers playing high-scoring games away from Chavez Ravine continued last night after Anthony Rendon’s eighth-inning solo home run eclipsed the posted total of 8.5. Can the run continue against Strasburg? Washington’s ace has allowed no more than a single run in a game over his last four outings and has given up just five hits over 21.2 inning this month upon coming off the disabled list. This will be his first time seeing the Dodgers this season and he really doesn’t have much history against any roster member not named Chase Utley (4-for-27). No current Dodger owns a home run against him, though Adrian Gonzalez is 4-for-9 with a double. Perhaps the Nats can do the heavy lifting on an ‘over’ call against 19-year-old Julio Urias (1-2, 4.95) since they’ve blessed Strasburg with tremendous run support all season. The lowest output Washington has managed in a Strasburg start this season has been three runs and it has averaged 6.7 runs per game over his 17 starts. Urias had been pitching out of the bullpen in Triple-A before being called up to take this start, his first since surrendering five runs in just 3.1 innings on July 4 against Baltimore. Oddsmakers have set the total at 8. The WestgateLV Superbook had it available at 7.5 on Thursday morning.

Matchup to watch: Marlins at Phillies
Because all three games thus far have been tightly contested and Miami returns home for a huge three-game set against the Mets this weekend, we’ve got our eyes on this series finale. The Marlins dropped a 4-1 decision against Jeremy Hellickson and the Phillies on Wednesday night but remain one game ahead of New York and St. Louis for possession of the second NL Wild Card. The Dodgers own the first one, just one game up themselves. Although over two months remain, the Fish have to take advantage of games against inferior competition if they’re going to reach the postseason. They’re 4-8 against the lowly Braves and are just 4-5 against the Phillies entering this one. This one is going off as basically a pick’em, so we’ll see if the Marlins can rise up to avoid squandering another opportunity against a sub-.500 team. Righties Tom Koehler (6-8, 4.68) and Jerad Eickhoff (6-10, 3.76) square off. Miami’s Koehler is 0-1 against the Phils despite a 1.93 ERA over 14 innings, while Eickhoff lost at home 5-3 on May 16. He pitched six shutout innings in South Florida to win his major league debut against the Marlins last season. Philadelphia has won six of the last eight times he’s taken the mound.

Betcha didn’t know: Cardinals third-baseman Jedd Gyorko, filling in for the injured Matt Carpenter, is tormenting his former team, hitting three home runs in Wednesday's doubleheader sweep. He's 7-for-10 with four homers in the series and will be looking to join Barry Bonds and Chipper Jones as the only players ever to homer in six straight games against San Diego. The Padres are doing some thumping themselves, having gone deep in 18 straight contests, which is the National League's longest streak since 2010 (Reds). In order to extend that run, they'll have to snap Adam Wainwright's run of not allowing a homer in eight straight contests. Wil Myers homered off Wainwright (9-5, 4.15) in the first inning of a 4-1 win back on April 15, setting the tone. Padres starter Andrew Cashner (4-7, 5.05) will face his former teammate Gyorko for the first time.

Biggest public favorite: Pirates (-175) vs. Brewers

Biggest public underdog: Rays (+120) at A's

Biggest line move: Yankees (+102 to -115) vs. Orioles

LEADING OFF: Strasburg vs Urias, O's battle illness
July 21, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

STRASBURG VS. URIAS

One phenom faces another when Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg (13-0, 2.51) takes on young Dodgers left-hander Julio Urias (1-2, 4.95). Strasburg, the first overall pick in the 2009 draft, has emerged as an NL Cy Young Award candidate, especially with Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw battling an injury. Urias is just 19 but could compete for Cy Youngs in the future. For now, he's trying to rebound from a rough start against AL East-leading Baltimore in his last start.

FLU BIRDS

The Orioles are limping into getaway day at the end of their four-game series against the Yankees. First baseman Chris Davis missed his third straight game Wednesday because of flu-like symptoms, and manager Buck Showalter and third baseman Manny Machado also missed Wednesday with similar symptoms. The O's could also be without catcher Matt Wieters again - he was out of the lineup for a second straight game Wednesday after being hit by a pitch in the right foot Monday.

HELP WANTED?

The Red Sox need to find yet another closer after Koji Uehara went on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with a right pectoral strain. Uehara was filling in for injured closer Craig Kimbrel, and now team president Dave Dombrowski may have to plug another hole before the Aug. 1 deadline. Knuckleballer Steven Wright (11-5, 2.78) pitches the opener of a four-game series against Minnesota, which counters with right-hander Tyler Duffey (5-6, 5.23).

SONNY SIDE UP

Athletics right-hander Sonny Gray (4-8, 5.12) snapped a career-worst seven-game losing streak in his most recent start and will hope to build on that momentum against the Tampa Bay Rays. Gray is 2-1 with a 3.11 ERA in six career starts against the Rays and 2-2 with a 7.01 ERA in five starts against the Eastern Division this year. Tampa Bay counters with Matt Moore (5-7, 4.33), who may be auditioning to be traded to a contender before the Aug. 1 deadline.

Thursday's MLB Game of the Day: Tigers at White Sox
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Shields was superb in his last outing when he gave up one run and two hits in eight innings but he suffered the loss in a 1-0 decision against the Los Angeles Angels.

Detroit Tigers at Chicago White Sox (A: +105, H: -125, Total: 10.5)

The Detroit Tigers are trying to remain in range of the American League Central-leading Cleveland Indians as they open a four-game series on Thursday against the host Chicago White Sox. Detroit is a distant 7 1/2 games behind the soaring Indians and the club's better option may be focusing on closing in on Toronto, Boston and Houston in the wild-card race.

Chicago has fallen 10 games behind the Indians after a 1-5 road trip that concluded with Wednesday's 6-5 loss in 11 innings to the Seattle Mariners, marking the second time in three games that the White Sox blew a late three-run lead. "It is tough, especially when you're leading both the ones that you lose late," White Sox manager Robin Ventura told reporters afterward. “Those are always tough to be able to bounce back." The Tigers will try to get their bats moving again after scoring just four total runs while losing two of three home games to the AL-worst Minnesota Twins. Detroit second baseman Ian Kinsler is 8-for-24 with three homers since the resumption of play after the All-Star break and hit his 36th career leadoff homer for the lone run in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Twins.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, FSN Detroit, CSN Chicago

INJURY REPORT:

Tigers - LF T. Collins (Questionable Thursday, neck), RF J. Martinez (15-Day DL, elbow).

White Sox - C A. Avila (15-Day DL, hamstring), RP Z. Putnam (15-Day DL, elbow), CF A. Jackson (15-Day DL, knee).

WEATHER REPORT: There is a chance of thunderstorms to develop in Chicago on Thursday night with a 50 percent chance of rain. Temperatures will be in the upper-80's with humidity values hovering around an uncomfortable 70 percent. There will also be a 10 mph wind blowing out to left at U.S. Cellular Field tonight.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Mike Pelfrey (2-9, 4.95 ERA) vs. White Sox RH James Shields (4-11, 5.10)

Pelfrey gave up two runs and five hits in six innings while beating the White Sox on June 4 - the lone time he has beaten Chicago in 10 career starts. He lost 11 days later when he gave up four runs and seven hits in six innings and is 1-5 with a 5.81 ERA lifetime against the White Sox. Pelfrey is 0-6 in nine road starts this season despite a respectable 3.53 ERA.

Shields was superb in his last outing when he gave up one run and two hits in eight innings but he suffered the loss in a 1-0 decision against the Los Angeles Angels. He has a 1.91 ERA over his last four starts - allowing two or fewer runs in each - after initially struggling upon being acquired from the San Diego Padres in early June. Shields is 7-6 with a 4.36 ERA in 20 career starts against the Tigers.

TRENDS:

* Tigers are 10-2 in their last 12 games vs. a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30.
* Tigers are 1-5 in Pelfrey's last 6 road starts.
* White Sox are 1-6 in their last 7 overall.
* Under is 7-0 in Tigers last 7 games vs. a right-handed starter.
* Under is 5-0 in Pelfrey's last 5 road starts.
* Over is 4-0 in Shields' last 4 starts vs. a team with a winning record.

CONSENSUS: The public is favoring the home favorite Detroit Tigers at a rate of 53 percent in this battle of struggling starting pitchers. In a less than surprising development, Over 10.5 is getting 60 percent of the total action.

WASHINGTON (AP) Justin Turner homered twice and drove in five runs and the Los Angeles Dodgers ended Stephen Strasburg's undefeated streak by beating the Washington Nationals 6-3 on Thursday.

Turner hit his 16th and 17th home runs, a two-run shot off Strasburg in the first and a three-run shot off the right-hander in the third, to set a career high.

Howie Kendrick extended his hitting streak to 13 games, and Adrian Gonzalez also drove in a run for the Dodgers. They beat the Nationals for the fifth time in six games this season.

Strasburg (13-1) lost for the first time since Sept. 9, ending a run of 16 consecutive winning decisions. Making it through the sixth, he allowed a season-high six earned runs and seven hits - all in the first three innings - and struck out 10.

Before Strasburg could settle down, the Dodgers crushed the ball against him, including a double off the left-field wall from Gonzalez and Turner's two home runs. At one point Strasburg struck out seven of nine Los Angeles batters and allowed just one base runner after the third.

Left-hander Adam Liberatore (2-0) got the win by pitching a scoreless eighth. Kenley Jansen finished for his 28th save.

RED SOX 13, TWINS 2

BOSTON (AP) - Mookie Betts homered on the first pitch Boston faced, David Ortiz added a late two-run homer and the Red Sox continued to surge through July with a victory over Minnesota.

Dustin Pedroia went 5 for 5 with two doubles for Boston. The Red Sox had 17 hits while winning their third straight and improving to 12-3 in July.

Betts, Ortiz and Xander Bogaerts had three hits apiece and Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a solo homer and finished with three RBIs. Steven Wright (12-5) tied his career high with nine strikeouts and held Minnesota to four hits in eight innings.

Boston, which had 16 hits in an 11-7 win over San Francisco on Wednesday, was up 3-0 after getting four hits against Minnesota starter Tyler Duffey (5-7) in the first.

ORIOLES 4, YANKEES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Chris Tillman tied for the major league lead with his 14th victory, pitching four-hit ball for seven innings and helping depleted Baltimore avert a four-game sweep at Yankee Stadium.

The Orioles had lost four straight overall, costing them their lead in the AL East.

Baltimore slugger Chris Davis, shortstop Manny Machado and manager Buck Showalter returned from a stomach bug that's hit the clubhouse. But Orioles center fielder Adam Jones didn't play because of back spasms, catcher Matt Wieters missed his third consecutive game after being hit by a pitch in the foot and rookie outfielder Joey Rickard sat out with an injured thumb.

Tillman (14-2) matched White Sox ace Chris Sale for the most victories in the majors. Tillman gave up three hits and two walks to the first eight batters, capped by Starlin Castro's RBI single. The tall right-hander then set down 16 of his final 17 hitters.

Brad Brach pitched the eighth and Zach Britton closed for his 30th save in as many chances.

CC Sabathia (5-8) lost on his 36th birthday.

CARDINALS 6, PADRES 5

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Aledmys Diaz's walk-off single in the ninth inning gave St. Louis a comeback victory over San Diego.

St. Louis scored four runs - the last three on Stephen Piscotty's homer - to tie it in the eighth and went on to its first four-game series sweep at home since beating Colorado on Sept. 30-Oct. 3, 2010.

Tommy Pham led off the ninth with a double off reliever Carlos Villanueva (1-1). With the bases loaded and one out, Diaz ripped a 3-2 pitch to left for the winner.

Yangervis Solarte homered in the eighth inning to extend the Padres' franchise-record home run streak to 19 consecutive games. The streak is the longest in the National League since Milwaukee hit home runs in 20 consecutive games in July 2008.

PIRATES 5, BREWERS 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Francisco Liriano took another step toward putting his season-long control issues behind him, striking out 13 in Pittsburgh's victory over Milwaukee.

Liriano (6-9) gave up three runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings and didn't issue a walk for just the second time in 19 starts. The left-hander entered the game having issued a major league-high 62 walks.

Mark Melancon worked the ninth for his 28th save.

Matt Joyce hit a three-run homer off Matt Garza (1-4) in the first inning and finished with four RBIs after being a last-second substitution in the outfield when Starling Marte was diagnosed with flu-like symptoms shortly before the first pitch.

Jonathan Villar homored for the Brewers.

ROCKIES 7, BRAVES 3

DENVER (AP) - Carlos Gonzalez hit a three-run homer to break a scoreless tie in the sixth inning, Chad Bettis threw efficiently into the seventh and Colorado topped Atlanta,

Gonzalez lined a 97 mph fastball from Mike Foltynewicz (3-4) over the fence in right-center. It was Gonzalez's 20th homer of the season.

Bettis (8-6) allowed one run over 6 2-3 innings. He was cruising through Atlanta's lineup until hitting a bump in the seventh when he gave up an RBI double to A.J. Pierzynski.

Trailing 7-1 in the ninth, the Braves scored twice before the Rockies brought in closer Carlos Estevez with two outs. He got Jace Peterson to roll out to end the game and earn his seventh save.

MARLINS 9, PHILLIES 3

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Tom Koehler pitched eight strong innings, Ichiro Suzuki moved within four hits of 3,000 for his career and Miami pounded out 16 hits against Philadelphia.

Christian Yelich homered, and the Marlins won three of four over the Phillies to cap a seven-game road trip at 5-2. Miami moved 1 1/2 games ahead of idle New York for the second NL wild-card spot.

Koehler (7-8) rebounded from a month-long slump with arguably his best outing of the season. He gave up two hits and only one of his three runs allowed was earned while striking out five and walking one.

Ryan Howard and Freddy Galvis homered for Philadelphia.

Jerad Eickhoff (6-11) was the loser.

RAYS 7, ATHLETICS 3

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Tim Beckham homered and then sparked a four-run inning with his eighth straight hit over three games to lead the Rays to a victory over the Athletics.

He followed up a five-hit game in Colorado on Wednesday by hitting a solo homer in the second against Sonny Gray (4-9) and then adding a leadoff single in the big fifth inning that gave Tampa Bay the lead for good.

Beckham, who started the streak with a single in his final at-bat Monday, was finally retired when he popped out to end the sixth but by then he had done his damage. His eight hits in eight at-bats - he walked in his other plate appearance - were one more hit than he had in 41 at-bats in all of June.

Corey Dickerson homered and drove in three runs, and Logan Forsythe, Brad Miller and Evan Longoria added RBI hits in the fifth inning to back a solid start by Matt Moore (6-7).

TIGERS 2, WHITE SOX 1, 7 innings

CHICAGO (AP) - Ian Kinsler hit his 20th home run, Miguel Cabrera added his 19th and the Tigers beat the struggling White Sox in a game that was called after more than a two-hour rain delay in the seventh inning on Thursday.

A heavy downpour before the bottom of the seventh sent players and umpires running for cover. And after two hours, five minutes the game was finally called.

The Tigers opened a seven-game trip on a winning note while the White Sox have now dropped seven of eight.

Kinsler and Cabrera made it 2-1 with solo homers against James Shields (4-12) in the fifth. Mike Pelfrey (3-9) won for just the second time in nine starts, and the Tigers came out on top after dropping two of three against Minnesota.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

Favorites to win the NBA this coming season

-- Golden State 2-3-- Added Durant, but are much thinner, still need some depth.

-- Cavaliers 5-2-- If Indians win World Series, Cleveland is city of champions.

-- San Antonio 8-1-- Spurs will miss Duncan's leadership.

-- Clippers, Celtics 20-1

-- Oklahoma City 30-1

-- Toronto 40-1

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here.......

13) Saw a kid shatter a backboard dunking today, the highlight of my full day inside the Cashman Centr, watching the adidas Uprising summer tournament. As soon as I figure out how to post pictures on this website, that'll be the first one I post.

12) ACC basketball will go to a 20-game conference schedule when ACC Network gets off the ground, to create more progamming.

11) Most of the games I watched on Thursday were tight, competitive games, good basketball. Louisville Magic were a solid team with lot of good players; they got off to bad starts in both games I saw, but kept their poise and rallied both times- they lost to a very good Florida Sons team, after beating the Atlanta Celtics.

10) AAU players play a ton of games and they get seen by D-I coaches, which is essential to getting scholarship offers, but some of these kids would be better off at home, working on their skills, or becoming quicker, or stronger.

9) Couple years ago I went to a JC showcase at a boys' club, with only one court and about 30 coaches, mostly low majors, looking to find a diamond in the rough. It was a little bit sad, kids on their last chance for a college scholarship. One kid blew his knee out, undoubtedly ending his career. Not good.

8) Saw two kids this week step out of the bounds on the sideline while catching ball and getting ready to shoot a 3-pointer. Last time I had seen that was in an 8th grade game-- you have to know where you are on the court.

7) Utah-BYU will renew their rivalry next year (2017-18) which is good news, since they basically despise each other, which is always fun.

6) Referees huddle with supervisors during timeouts; one guy called three seconds 1:28 into a game-- good lord, no one came here to watch you ref.

That said, most of the officiating was good-- these are really good players and they're fast and the games get physical. but please stop with the three seconds calls.

5) In 15 hours of watching games this week, I didn't see one technical foul; the kids were all well-behaved, the coaches didn't act out too much. Good to watch.

4) One thing: teams that attack the basket get more calls; if you just pass the ball around the arc then jack a 3-pointer, you're not gong to get calls. Drive to the basket, be aggressive and you will get to the foul line more often.

3) Hubert Davis: "When I was a kid, I went to one week of basketball camp, then played pickup the rest of the summer". Times have changed.

2) I like to watch teams that press; you get to see how players defend, handle ball, make quick decisions, pass, shoot, run, defend. Only bad thing is that big kids suffer in these fast-paced games- they rarely touch the ball unless they rebound it.

1) Saw a promising 7-footer from Louisville, Chris Vogt, who has a soft touch around the hoop but he needs to get stronger, which will come with age. Smart kid; he told me Yale, Vanderbilt are among the teams vying for his services.

LEADING OFF: Bumgarner faces Yankees for first time
July 22, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

CHASING 3,000

Ichiro Suzuki hit an infield single in the third and a solid single to right-center in the eighth to bring his major-league total to 2,996. He is vying to become the 30th player all-time to reach 3,000 hits.

''It's been fun,'' Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. ''He's a great guy to watch.''

The 42-year-old Suzuki joked that he had plenty of time to reach the milestone.

''Donny (Mattingly) said I was going to play for seven more years,'' Suzuki said through an interpreter. ''I should be able to get four more (hits) in seven years.''

MORE BUNDY

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Dylan Bundy makes his second major league start against Cleveland. The 23-year-old made his first major league start last weekend and gave up three home runs in 3 1/3 innings at Tampa Bay.

FIRST LOOK

The San Francisco Giants visit Yankee Stadium for the first time since 2013 and left-hander Madison Bumgarner, with his 2.12 ERA, pitches against the Yankees for the first time in his career. He'll face Masahiro Tanaka.

KEYSTONE COMBO

The Phillies and Pirates meet for the first time this season and the all-Pennsylvania matchup has Philadephia's Zach Eflin facing Pittsburgh's Gerrit Cole.

SURGING

Michael Fulmer looks to stay on a roll as the Detroit Tigers continue their four-game series against the Chicago White Sox.

The right-hander is 7-1 in his past 10 starts and 9-2 overall with a 2.13 ERA this season. Righty Jacob Turner (0-1, 18.00) makes his second start for Chicago.
