MLB betting cheat sheet: Cubbie Pride

Since taking all seven regular season meetings in 2015, the Cubs have lost eight in a row to the Mets - the revenge angle could be strong at Wrigley this week.

Power Sports breaks down the best MLB betting notes so you can handicap every series like a pro in the first full week since the All-Star break, including the Mets and Cubs at Wrigley Field.

Cubbie Pride

Since taking all seven regular season meetings in 2015, the Cubs have lost eight in a row to the Mets - that obviously includes getting swept in last year’s National League Championship Series. It also includes a sweep at Citi Field that took place earlier this month.

But the revenge angle could be strong here at Wrigley this week. In Friday’s column, I stated that I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised to see the NL Central leaders win their series against Texas (took 2 of 3) and I’m of the same mindset here. Not only is this series contested at the Friendly Confines, but the Cubs get to trot out Lester and Arrieta in the first two games.

The Mets offense (28th in runs scored) has fallen off dramatically this season.

First Time for Everything

In one of the real “stunners” of the weekend, San Diego swept San Francisco.

Believe it or not, but that was the first sweep for the Padres all season! It’s just their fourth three-game win streak of 2016 and so far they are 0-3 in this spot, having been shut out twice.

Their opponent starting Monday is St. Louis, who shockingly has the third worst home record in the entire National League (20-28). The Padres have actually played the Cardinals tough over the last three seasons, going 8-9 against them.

National Importance

Sticking with the National League, there’s a big series starting Tuesday as the Nationals host the Dodgers.

In my eyes, Washington has emerged as the second best team in all of baseball (Cubs) and they have the edge at home as Los Angeles has been a losing proposition (-5.7 units) on the road. It is still unknown as to when Clayton Kershaw will be making his return to the mound, but it doesn’t seem like it will be in the Nation’s Capital.

This is also a revenge situation for the Nats as they were swept at Dodger Stadium back in June.

Pitching Notes

* The White Sox desperately need a quality start from Chris Sale on Monday. Their left-handed ace was shockingly shelled by Atlanta in his last start before the All-Star Break (allowed eight runs!), not to mention the team has scored a grand total of one run its last four games. Sale still has a 14-4 TSR though (3.38 ERA, 1.04 WHIP) and will be facing a team (Seattle) that scored only two runs in its last two games.

* Tyler Anderson is a name to potentially keep an eye on. A rookie southpaw for Colorado, he’s obviously at a disadvantage having to regularly pitch at Coors Field. But the Rockies finally might have a pitcher who can consistently strike batters out (so key with that thin air). He has a 32-6 KW rate thus far (six starts) and has allowed three earned runs or less every time out.

Hitter Notes

* So much for sacrifice. A day after the Indians did a well-publicized “sacrifice” (google it, if interested) on catcher Yan Gomes (in the hopes of getting him out of a season-long slump), he injured his shoulder and now may possibly miss the remainder of the regular season. While catcher is a tough position to have an injury, what is Cleveland really going to be missing here? Gomes was hitting only .165 for the year, including a 0 for 27 stretch heading into Sunday.

* Cleveland will be facing Kansas City starting Monday. The Royals have a hitter of their own who has been in a season-long funk, that being Alex Gordon, who is hitting just .207 for the year with a .692 OPS. Gordon is just a .188 career hitter against Corey Kluber, whom KC will face in Monday’s opener.

Totals Trend

The Over has cashed in each of the last six starts made by Philadelphia’s Aaron Nola. He faces off against Jose Fernandez on Monday, at home.

Monday's Weather Report:

Thunderstorms are expected to be the theme of the week as a massive system is being forecast to stall and stretch from the Midwest all the way to the East coast. Let's get into it.

* There is a chance of thunderstorms in The Bronx where the first place Orioles will be in town to take on the Yankees. There is a 60 percent chance of rain to go along with hot and humid conditions this evening. The total is currently set at 9.0.

* Thunderstorms will also be an issue in Philadelphia where the Phillies will be hosting the Miami Marlins. There is also a 60 percent chance of rain for this one with hot, humid air conditions and a 10 mph wind blowing out to right field. The total is currently set at 7.0.

* There is a chance of thunderstorms in Cincinnati where the Reds will host the Atlanta Braves. There is a 50 percent chance of rain and hot, sticky air throughout the game. The total is set at 9.0.

* Busch Stadium in St. Louis will be another sight for a potential light show tonight. The San Diego Padres will be in town to take on the Cards and there is a 30 percent chance of rain, temperatures in the mid-90's, humidity levels at around 70 percent, and a 5 mph breeze blowing out to left field. The total is set at 8.5.

* Denver will have a 50 percent chance of rain and thunderstorms tonight with the Tampa Bay Rays coming to town to take on the Rockies in interleague action. There will be a 5-10 mph swirling wind throughout the evening. The total is currently 11.5.

CHICAGO (AP) Anthony Rizzo hit a three-run homer, Jon Lester pitched 7 2/3 innings and the Chicago Cubs stopped an eight-game losing streak against the New York Mets with a 5-1 victory on Monday night in a rematch of last year's NL Championship Series.

With one out and two on in the third inning, Rizzo fouled off five straight 2-2 pitches from Steven Matz before driving a changeup deep into the right-center bleachers for his 22nd homer.

Lester (10-4) allowed one run - Wilmer Flores' leadoff homer in the seventh - and four hits in his first win in a month. Matz (7-6) was charged with four runs and eight hits in five-plus innings, dropping to 0-5 in his last nine starts.

MARLINS 3, PHILLIES 2

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - Jose Fernandez tied a career-high with 14 strikeouts, and Martin Prado hit a solo homer off Brett Oberholtzer (2-2) in the 11th.

Fernandez pitched 6 1/3 innings and became the pitcher to reach 500 strikeouts in the fewest innings: 400.

Christian Yelich hit an RBI double off Jeanmar Gomez with two outs in the ninth and scored on Marcell Ozuna's single.

Kyle Barraclough (6-2) pitched one inning, and A.J. Ramos finished for his 30th save, retiring Maikel Franco on a game-ending flyout to the warning track

TIGERS 1, TWINS 0

DETROIT (AP) - Matt Boyd (1-2) allowed three hits in six innings, sending last-place Minnesota to another loss just hours after it announced the firing of general manager Terry Ryan.

Justin Upton homered in the second. Three relievers finished for the Tigers, with Francisco Rodriguez pitching a hitless ninth for his 26th save.

YANKEES 2, ORIOLES 1

NEW YORK (AP) - Alex Rodriguez hit his 696th career homer - his first since June 18 - Ivan Nova (7-5) grinded through six innings and Aroldis Chapman hit 105 mph while locking down his 19th save.

The No Runs DMC triad, possibly in its final days with Andrew Miller and Chapman rumored to be on the trade block, covered the final three innings to extend its scoreless streak to 22 innings. The Yankees are 18-1 when all Dellin Betances and the other two relievers pitch in the same game.

Kevin Gausman (1-7) also allowed Brian McCann's sacrifice fly in the third and fell to 0-1 in three starts against New York this season despite a 1.31 ERA over 20 2/3 innings.

REDS 8, BRAVES 2

CINCINNATI (AP) - Zack Cozart, Joey Votto and Eugenio Suarez all homered in the fourth inning of a matchup between the NL's two worst teams.

The Reds (35-58) have taken three of five this season against the Braves, who have the majors' worst record (32-61). Atlanta is 19-31 at Great American Ball Park, including five losses in its last six games.

Matt Wisler (4-9) has given up five homers in his last two starts.

Brandon Finnegan (5-7) allowed two runs and seven hits in five-plus innings.

CARDINALS 10, PADRES 2

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Mike Leake (7-7) had his second straight double-digit strikeouts game with no walks, joining Bob Gibson (1968-69) as the only St. Louis pitchers to accomplish the feat, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Leake struck out a season-best 11, allowing one run and six hits in six innings.

Pinch-hitter Matt Adams' two-run double keyed a four-run sixth. Randal Grichuk and Jedd Gyorko connecting in consecutive at-bats in the seventh, and Stephen Piscotty homered into the third deck in left in the eighth.

Christian Friedrich (4-6) gave up four runs - three earned - and six hits in 5 1/3 innings.

ROYALS 7, INDIANS 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Jarrod Dyson hit a grand slam off Jeff Manship following a pair of walks by Bryan Shaw (1-4), capping a seven-run rally in the eighth.

Corey Kluber scattered five hits and took the mound to begin the eighth with a 2-0 lead. But manager Terry Francona and trainer James Quinlan came from the dugout and pulled Kluber because of a right calf cramp on a night with a 90-degree gametime temperature.

Luke Hochevar (2-2) worked a scoreless eighth, and Wade Davis got the final out for his 20th save.

ATHLETICS 7, ASTROS 4

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Yonder Alonso drove in three runs with a pair of two-out hits to back Kendall Graveman's fifth consecutive win, and the Athletics beat the Astros.

Khris Davis hit his fourth home run in three games, Marcus Semien had two hits and scored twice while Ryon Healy added an RBI double for the A's.

Oakland has won three of four since the All-Star break.

Graveman (6-6) allowed three runs over seven innings to earn his second straight win over Houston. Dyan Dull retired three batters and Ryan Madson pitched the ninth for his 20th save.

Starter Mike Fiers (6-4) allowed six runs over 3 2/3 innings to remain winless in five career starts against Oakland.

MARINERS 4, WHITE SOX 3

SEATTLE (AP) - Adam Lind hit a three-run pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning to give the Mariners an improbable comeback victory over the White Sox, handing Chicago its fifth consecutive loss and wasting a dominant performance by Chris Sale.

Seattle, which had managed just one hit in eight innings off Sale, rallied against closer David Robertson (0-2), who had recorded 13 straight save opportunities.

Sale, bidding to become the first 15-game winner in the majors, allowed just a first-inning single en route to eight scoreless innings.

David Rollins (1-0) pitched the ninth inning for the win.

ANGELS 9, RANGERS 5

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Mike Trout hit a three-run homer to help the Angels rally from four runs down and beat the Rangers.

With the score tied 5-5 in the seventh, Jeff Bandy was hit by a pitch from Keone Kela (1-1) to start the bottom of the inning and moved to third on Simmons' double. One out later, Calhoun hit a fielder's choice to second, driving in Bandy with the go-ahead run, and Trout followed with his homer over the left-field fence.

J.C. Ramirez (2-3) pitched 1 2/3 innings for the win, and Cam Bedrosian got the last three outs.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

-- Lot of Republicans hate Donald Trump; someone planted blatant plagiarism into Melania Trump's speech last night, mirroring a Michelle Obama speech from 2008 to make the candidate look bad. This year, making people look bad isn't so hard.

-- No actual politician would be stupid enough to plagiarize and thinking you can get away with it, not in this day and age. Unless it was intentional.

-- Mariners 4, White Sox 3-- Chris Sale threw eight shutout innings on 100 pitches, but was lifted after the 8th with a 3-0 lead. Aaron Lind hit a 3-run walkoff homer.

-- It is July 19 and the Jets haven't signed their starting quarterback yet.

-- Twins fired GM Terry Ryan; not only does Minnesota stink, they owe Hughes and Mauer a total of $86M, after this season.

-- RIP Marion Campbell. Known as the Swamp Fox, the former NFL coach was a defensive wizard who played for the 1960 Eagles' title team.

Tuesday's MLB Game of the Day: Mets at Cubs
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Cubs' Jake Arrieta has not recorded a quality start in his last four outings and has lasted six innings in just one of those starts.

New York Mets at Chicago Cubs (A: +135, H: -145, Total: 7.0)

The "friendly confines" of Wrigley Field have been anything but kind to the New York Mets. The Mets have lost eight straight regular-season road games to the Chicago Cubs, a streak they’ll try to break in the second contest of a three-game set Tuesday.

Chicago improved its National League-best home record to 29-15 with a 5-1 victory in the series opener, getting a three-run blast from Anthony Rizzo and a strong outing from Jon Lester. The loss snapped the Mets’ streak of eight straight wins against the Cubs, including a sweep in last year’s NL Championship Series and a four-game sweep earlier this month in New York. The Cubs’ starting pitching, which limped into the All-Star break, has turned in four solid starts to begin the second half. The Mets will try to beat reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta for the second time in 2 1/2 weeks after touching him for four runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings July 2 in New York.

TV: 7:05 p.m. ET, SNY (New York), CSN Chicago, ESPN

INJURY REPORT:

Mets - SP N. Syndergaard (Probable Tuesday, arm), RP J. Henderson (15-Day DL, bicep), 1B L. Duda (15-Day DL, back), 3B D. Wright (60-Day DL, neck).

Cubs - CF D. Fowler (15-Day DL, hamstring), RP T. Cahill (15-Day DL, knee), 3B C. Coghlan (15-Day DL, ribs), LF J. Soler (15-Day DL, hamstring).

WEATHER REPORT: The weather forecast couldn't be more perfect for what, on paper, looks like a potential game of the year candidate. Clear skies, temperatures in the low-80's, and a bit of a breeze (5 mph) blowing in from right field will welcome these two teams to the field Tuesday night.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Mets RH Noah Syndergaard (9-4, 2.56 ERA) vs. Cubs RH Jake Arrieta (12-4, 2.68)

Syndergaard, who has been battling bone chips in his elbow, received a few extra days coming out of the All-Star break. The 23-year-old has been inconsistent over the past couple of weeks, but he held the Cubs to one run over seven innings July 3 in New York. Syndergaard is 1-1 with a 2.92 ERA in two starts against Chicago.

Arrieta has not recorded a quality start in his last four outings and has lasted six innings in just one of those starts. The 30-year-old’s last outing before the All-Star break was a rough one, as he allowed six runs over six innings in a loss at Pittsburgh. Arrieta is 2-2 with a 2.48 ERA in six starts against the Mets.

TRENDS:

* Mets are 1-7 in their last 8 Tuesday games.
* Mets are 7-0 in Syndergaard's last 7 starts vs. National League Central.
* Cubs are 1-6 in their last 7 games vs. a right-handed starter.
* Cubs are 11-3 in Arrieta's last 14 home starts.
* Over is 7-1 in Syndergaard's last 8 starts overall.
* Under is 9-2 in Cubs last 11 home games vs. a right-handed starter.
* Mets are 8-1 in the last 9 meetings.

CONSENSUS: The public is favoring the home favorite Chicago Cubs at a rate of 64 percent. Early returns on the total were showing 86 percent of the wagers on Under 7.0.

LEADING OFF: Peavy, Giants at Fenway, Lopez debuts for Nats
July 18, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors Tuesday:

GIANT JAKE

Jake Peavy and the San Francisco Giants begin a two-game series at Fenway Park. Peavy started three postseason games for the Red Sox during their 2013 run to the World Series crown. Rick Porcello (11-2, 3.66 ERA) starts for Boston. Manager John Farrell said the team thought Porcello would benefit from a few extra days of rest out of the All-Star break.

WELCOME

Right-hander Reynaldo Lopez is expected to make his major league debut when he starts for NL East-leading Washington at home against the Dodgers. Lopez gets his chance because Nationals righty Joe Ross isn't ready to come off the disabled list. Lopez had never pitched above Class A until this year, and is a combined 4-5 with a 3.19 ERA in Double-A and Triple-A.

RELIEF AT THE START

Orioles right-hander Vance Worley (2-0, 2.87 ERA) and Yankees righty Nathan Eovaldi (7-6, 5.11) return to the rotation after stints in the bullpen. Worley hasn't started since April and had a 2.23 ERA in 18 relief appearances. Baltimore is hoping he can bolster its struggling rotation, which had the third-worst ERA (5.14) in the majors entering Monday. Eovaldi threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings over three relief appearances after losing his rotation spot.

STREAKING SANCHEZ

Toronto All-Star Aaron Sanchez (9-1) pitches the opener of a two-game set in Arizona. He has won eight straight decisions with a 2.87 ERA since losing to Oakland on April 22.

ON THE MEND

All-Star Dexter Fowler and fellow Cubs outfielder Jorge Soler are set to begin rehab assignments with Triple-A Iowa. They've both been out because of hamstring injuries.

Tuesday's Diamond Notes
July 19, 2016

Hottest team: Angels (8-2 last 10)

It may be too little, too late for the Halos, but Los Angeles has won all four games since the All-Star break. Following a three-game sweep of the White Sox, the Angels rallied from a 4-0 deficit on Monday to stun the stumbling Rangers, 9-5 thanks to Mike Trout’s 19th home run. Los Angeles has scored at least seven runs in three of its last four victories, as the Halos look to provide plenty of run support for Tim Lincecum tonight. The former Cy Young winner hasn’t been particularly sharp since winning his L.A. debut, allowing 17 earned runs in his past four outings, while the Angels own a 1-3 mark in this stretch.

Coldest team: Rays (1-9 last 10)

Tampa Bay just can’t seem to bust out of this category, as the Rays dropped their 11th straight road game in Monday’s setback at Colorado. The Rays have won just twice this month, while allowing at least four runs in nine of the past 10 contests. The last time that Tampa Bay won on the road came at Arizona back on June 8, as the Rays tries to end their highway woes tonight at Coors Field. Southpaw Blake Snell takes the mound for Tampa Bay as the Rays have compiled a 1-5 record in his six starts this season.

Hottest pitcher: Vince Velasquez, Phillies (8-2, 3.32 ERA)

Philadelphia suffered a heart-breaking loss in Monday’s 3-2 defeat to Miami, allowing two runs in the ninth inning before Martin Prado’s game-winning homer in extra innings. The Phillies turn to Velasquez tonight, who has won three straight starts since missing time in June with a sore arm. Velasquez has allowed a total of four earned runs in these three victories, while striking out 10 Marlins the last time he faced Miami in a 3-1 victory back on May 17.

Coldest pitcher: Cody Reed, Reds (0-4, 8.39 ERA)

Cincinnati is looking for three straight wins for the first time since early June after routing Atlanta on Monday. The two teams hook up tonight at Great American Ballpark as the southpaw Reed is seeking his first Major League win in his sixth start. Reed hasn’t lasted past the fifth inning in his last four outings, while giving up at least four runs in each of his first five starts. Reed will be listed as a favorite for just the second time in his short career, as the left-hander was lit up for five earned runs in five innings against San Diego on June 24.

Biggest UNDER run: Mets (7-0 last seven)

The Cubs finally got over the hump against the Mets after getting swept in last season’s NLCS and dropping all four games at Citi Field earlier this month in Monday’s 5-1 rout. New York’s offense hasn’t woken up in July, scoring two runs or less in five of the past seven games, including four of those performances against the Cubs and Nationals. It should be another low-scoring affair at Wrigley tonight with Noah Syndergaard and Jake Arrieta on the mound. Arrieta has benefited from plenty of rest, last taking the mound on July 8 as the 2015 Cy Young winner owns a 1.65 home ERA.

Biggest OVER run: Dodgers (7-3 last 10 on road)

Los Angeles ventures east for a three-game series with the NL-East leading Nationals. The Dodgers came up short in Sunday’s 6-5 defeat at Arizona, but managed to cash the ‘over’ in two of three games against the Diamondbacks. The Dodgers’ offense has been up and down on the road of late, scoring at least five runs in five of the past seven games away from Chavez Ravine, but putting up one or less in the other two in this span. Scott Kazmir has cashed the ‘over’ in six of eight road starts this season for Los Angeles, while allowing at least three earned runs in six highway outings.

Matchup to watch:
Giants vs. Red Sox

Two teams that will likely be playing in October hook up for a brief two-game interleague set at Fenway Park. San Francisco and Boston split a two-game series at AT&T Park last month as the Giants make their first trip to Beantown since 2007. The Giants were swept by the Padres this past weekend, the first time San Francisco was swept on the road this season. The Red Sox captured two of three from the rival Yankees in the Bronx, while Boston owns a 7-3 record in its past 10 home contests. Former Red Sox right-hander Jake Peavy heads to the mound tonight for San Francisco opposite Rick Porcello, as the Giants try to improve on a 4-1 interleague record on the highway.

Betcha didn’t know:
It’s been a nightmare of a second half for the White Sox, who blew a 3-0 ninth inning lead in last night’s 4-3 defeat at Seattle. Chicago dropped its fifth straight game overall and is 0-4 since the All-Star break. The Mariners have been impressive in the second game of a home series this season coming off a victory in the opener, putting together a solid 6-2 record in this situation.

Biggest public favorite: Blue Jays (-190) at Diamondbacks

Biggest public underdog: Rangers (+105) at Angels

Biggest line move: Dodgers (+100 to -110) at Nationals
