LOS ANGELES (AP) Rich Hill pitched six dominant innings in his first start with Los Angeles and Justin Turner hit his 24th homer, lifting the Dodgers over the San Francisco Giants 1-0 on Wednesday night.

Los Angeles has a three-game lead over the Giants atop the NL West.

Turner homered in the fourth for the first hit against starter Johnny Cueto. Turner has 20 homers since June 10.

Hill (1-0) was on the disabled list with a blister on his left middle finger when the Dodgers acquired him from the Oakland Athletics on Aug. 1 along with outfielder Josh Reddick. He allowed five hits and struck out three while throwing 81 pitches.

Cueto (14-4) allowed a run and four hits over six innings, and San Francisco has lost eight of 10.

Kenley Jansen got his 37th save to complete the six-hitter. He reached 604 career strikeouts, tying Jim Brewer for most career strikeouts as a reliever in franchise history.

CUBS 6, PADRES 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Major league ERA leader Kyle Hendricks pitched six effective innings and Chicago finished off a three-game sweep.

Hendricks (12-7) gave up two runs and four hits, striking out eight and leaving with a 2.19 ERA. He has allowed no more than three earned runs in 17 straight starts.

There Cubs relievers took over for the NL Central leaders, with Aroldis Chapman pitching the ninth for his 29th save in 32 chances.

Willson Contreras homered and Ben Zobrist drove in two runs to help the Cubs win for the 22nd time in 27 games. At 81-45, they are 36 games over .500 for the first time since ending the 1945 season at 98-56.

The Padres have dropped nine of their past 12. Paul Clemens (2-3) took the loss.

YANKEES 5, MARINERS 0

SEATTLE (AP) - Rookie Gary Sanchez kept up his torrid stretch with his seventh home run in the past nine games, and Masahiro Tanaka won his fourth straight start in New York's victory over Seattle.

Tanaka (11-4) threw seven shutout innings and got the better of the Mariners and former Japan League teammate Hisashi Iwakuma (14-9).

The Yankees won their third straight road series. They took two of three from the Mariners, one of the teams they're chasing in the AL wild-card race.

Sanchez homered into the second deck in left field in the first inning on the first pitch from Iwakuma, his ninth home run in 18 games since joining the Yankees lineup Aug. 3.

Sanchez added a double and his intentional walk in the seventh inning led to Mark Teixeira's RBI single for a 4-0 lead.

RANGERS 6, REDS 5

CINCINNATI (AP) - Yu Darvish hit only the second homer by a Texas pitcher and Adrian Beltre had a tiebreaking double in the eighth inning in the Rangers' 6-5 victory over Cincinnati.

Darvish's solo shot to center field was one of three homers by the Rangers, who wasted a three-run lead before rallying late. Beltre's double off Blake Wood (5-2) snapped a 5-5 tie.

Nomar Mazara had a three-homer, and Ian Desmond followed Darvish's homer in the fifth with one off Tim Adleman. The Reds have given up 10 homers in the last three games, including four sets of back-to-backs.

Darvish let a 5-2 lead slip away. He walked a season-high five batters and hit a batter in six innings. A passed ball and an error led to two unearned runs.

Jake Diekman (4-2) went one inning and got the win. Sam Dyson pitched the ninth for his 28th save.

RAYS 4, RED SOX 3, 11 INNINGS

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - David Ortiz hit his 30th home run in the first inning, but Tampa Bay came back from a three-run deficit to beat Boston to prevent the Red Sox from taking sole possession of the AL East lead.

Luke Maile doubled with two out in the 11th and scored after Red Sox pitcher Heath Hembree (4-1) dropped a throw to first base on Kevin Kiermaier's grounder.

Brad Boxberger (2-0) got the win with one inning of relief.

Boston has won 10 of its last 13 games and remained tied for first with Toronto.

Bidding to become the majors' first 18-game winner, Rick Porcello allowed Evan Longoria's tying homer in the eighth before leaving. It was Longoria's 30th homer.

ANGELS 8, BLUE JAYS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Albert Pujols moved into sole possession of 10th place on the career home run list with 584, Matt Shoemaker pitched six shutout innings and Los Angeles beat Toronto to snap an 11-game road losing streak.

Pujols finished 4 for 4 with three RBIs. After he and Mike Trout hit back-to-back homers in the first, Pujols hit a sacrifice fly in the second, singled in the fourth and sixth innings, then capped his night with an RBI double in the eighth.

For Pujols, the homer broke a tie with Mark McGwire on career list. A three-time MVP and 10-time All-Star, Pujols is two home runs shy of tying Frank Robinson for ninth place.

Two pitches after Trout hit his 24th home run, Pujols did the same. Both shots came off Blue Jays right-hander Marco Estrada (7-6).

Shoemaker (8-13) allowed three hits, walked one and struck out three.

ORIOLES 10, NATIONALS 8

WASHINGTON (AP) - Baltimore closer Zach Britton saw his remarkable streak of 43 straight games without allowing an earned run end, then shut down Washington's ninth-inning rally.

The Nationals scored five times in the ninth, one of them charged to Britton. But after his own mistake helped Washington put runners on first and second with one out, Britton got Ryan Zimmerman to ground into a double play.

Manny Machado and Matt Wieters each homered and drove in four runs for the AL wild card-contending Orioles. Baltimore has beaten the NL East leaders three straight times this week.

Daniel Murphy hit a grand slam for the Nationals in the ninth, making it 10-7 and bringing Britton into the game with one out in a non-saved situation.

Wade Miley (8-10) allowed two runs on seven hits in five-plus innings. Tanner Roark (13-7) gave up five runs in five innings and hit three batters.

MARLINS 3, ROYALS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Jose Fernandez pitched seven innings and appeared to avoid a serious injury when he tweaked his right leg on his final pitch, helping Miami snap Kansas City's winning streak at nine.

Fernandez (13-7) pulled up after striking out Christian Colon to end the seventh, and rubbed his right knee before limping to the dugout. The Marlins pinch-hit for him in the bottom of the seventh.

Fernandez had nine strikeouts to increase his season total to 213, breaking the Marlins' record of 209 set by Ryan Dempster in 2000. Fernandez also had the Marlins' first two hits, hiking his average to .286.

Fernando Rodney pitched around two singles and walk for his 25th save and eighth with Miami.

Dillon Gee (5-7) took the loss.

CARDINALS 8, METS 1

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Matt Carpenter, Randal Grichuk and Stephen Piscotty homered off New York starter Jacob deGrom to power St. Louis.

Carpenter set the tone, hitting a leadoff home run in the first inning. The Cardinals went on to win for the seventh time in nine games.

Piscotty and Yadier Molina each had three of the Cardinals' season high-tying 19 hits.

Carlos Martinez (12-7) gave up one run and four hits over eight innings. He also got two hits himself.

Roughed up for the second straight start, deGrom (7-7) allowed five runs on 12 hits in 4 2/3 innings. He was tagged for a career-worst eight runs and 13 hits in his previous outing against San Francisco.

ATHLETICS 5, INDIANS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Kendall Graveman pitched into the seventh inning to become Oakland's first 10-game winner this season, and the Athletics beat Cleveland.

The A's took two of three games from the AL Central leaders. Cleveland went into the day with the best record in the American League, but was held to one run for the third consecutive game.

Khris Davis tripled and scored as part of Oakland's five-run second inning off Trevor Bauer (9-6).

Roberto Perez homered, and Jose Ramirez and Lonnie Chisenhall had two hits apiece for Cleveland.

Graveman (10-8) extended his scoreless streak to 16 innings before Perez homered in the seventh.

Graveman allowed six hits in 6 2/3 innings and won for the ninth time in his last 11 decisions.

ASTROS 5, PIRATES 4

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Evan Gattis hit his 20th home run, leading Collin McHugh and Houston over Pittsburgh for the Astros' fifth victory in six games.

McHugh (8-10) gave up three runs in five innings, ending an 0-4 rut in his last five starts. Ken Giles closed for his fifth save. Gerrit Cole (7-9) allowed five runs in five innings.

Jordy Mercer homered for Pittsburgh.

BREWERS 7, ROCKIES 1

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Ryan Braun hit two home runs and Milwaukee tied a season high with its fourth straight victory, beating Colorado.

Braun hit a solo drive off Tyler Anderson (4-5) in the fourth inning. He connected for his 24th homer, a two-run shot, off Chad Qualls in a four-run seventh.

Colorado's Nolan Arenado hit his NL-leading 34th homer in the first. The Rockies went on to load the bases, but Zach Davies (10-6) escaped further trouble.

TIGERS 9, TWINS 4

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Miguel Cabrera hit his 28th home run and had four hits, Justin Upton added a three-run homer and Detroit beat Minnesota.

Matt Boyd (5-2) tied his career high with seven strikeouts in six innings to win his fifth straight decision.

Cabrera had his fifth four-hit game of the season and was a triple shy of the cycle. He opened the scoring with a deep blast to straightaway center field in the first inning.

Brian Dozier hit his career-high 30th homer for Minnesota, but starter Tyler Duffey (8-10) allowed six runs in three innings. The Twins have lost sixth straight.

PHILLIES 5, WHITE SOX 3

CHICAGO (AP) - Tommy Joseph and Cesar Hernandez homered to back Jerad Eickhoff, and struggling Philadelphia beat Chicago.

Joseph and Hernandez each had two hits and went deep against James Shields (5-16). Aaron Altherr added two RBI singles.

Eickhoff (9-12) allowed two runs and four hits over six innings. Jeanmar Gomez worked the ninth for his 34th save in 38 chances.

DIAMONDBACKS 10, BRAVES 9, 11 INNINGS

PHOENIX (AP) - Brandon Drury drove in Jake Lamb with a sacrifice fly, giving Arizona a win over Atlanta.

The Diamondbacks loaded the bases with a double, a hit batter and an intentional walk against reliever Jose Ramirez (2-1). Matt Kemp dived to catch Drury's sinking liner to left but couldn't get off a good throw to stop Lamb.

Former starter Patrick Corbin (5-13) pitched two scoreless innings in relief to earn the win.

Armadillo:Thursday's six-pack

— Marlins acquired Jeff Francoeur from Atlanta in a 3-way deal where the Braves got minor leaguers, Texas got international signing slots.

— Former big league 1B/DH Dan Johnson (1,625 PA for six teams) is making a comeback as a knuckleball pitcher. He is 37 years old.

— Most NFL scouts think Denver’s Paxton Lynch will be first rookie QB to play for his new team this year.

— A’s are listed at 5,000-1 to win the World Series this year. If you’d like to put $10 or $20 on that one, I’d be glad to book it for you.

— Last night, Zach Greinke became 78th pitcher in MLB history to strike out 2,000+ batters in his career.

— Still bugs me that baseball teams sell broken bats in their gift shop. Shouldn’t they just give them away to season ticket holders?

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud

13) This weekend’s NFL are pretty much dress rehearsals for Week 1; you’ll see lot of regulars for a while this week. Next week, it’ll be guys at the end of depth charts playing for jobs in games no one should have to play full price to watch. Moreso than the other exhibition games, this week’s games are interesting to watch.

12) Strength of schedule in college football this year: Alabama has the 4th-toughest schedule, Michigan has the 65th-toughest (out of 128). Hawai’i-Central Florida-Colorado are their three non-league games.

11) Charlie Weis got paid $4.6M last year even though he did not coach; he was still cashing in on his last two jobs, Notre Dame/Kansas. Amazingly, Weis was the 8th-highest paid college football coach in America LY.

10) Before this year, Dan Straily’s career record was 13-13 in 45 career starts for the A’s/Cubs/Astros. This year, despite pitching in the bandbox ballpark in Cincinnati, Straily is 10-6, 3.57 in 24 starts, 6-0, 2.30 in his last seven; Reds are 9-2 in his home starts this year.

9) One of the baseball coaches/trainers for the classic baseball movie Bull Durham was Grady Little, who later managed the Red Sox.

8) Dodgers had seven starting pitchers on the DL before Rich Hill was activated to pitch last night; Hill is the 14th different starting pitcher LA has used this season.

7) We’ve talked a little bit recently about high school football in Texas; last year, the average salary for a HS football coach in one of Fort Worth’s biggest schools was $98,000. Average salary for a starting teacher in those same schools: $53,000.

6) When Chiefs’ coach Andy Reid was a kid, he once had a job serving meatballs in the backstage dining room at the Tonight Show.

5) Chargers and first-round draft pick Joey Bosa haven’t come to terms on a contract yet; Bosa is only hurting himself. His window for playing pro football is short; have to make money while you can. Get your butt into camp and play; show them you deserve your money, and more.

4) Betting odds for the Ryder Cup, which is Sept 30-Oct 2 in Minnesota: US is -$160, Europe is +$170, Tie is +1100. Odds were posted by golfodds.com.

3) Long time ago, I was an official scorer for two years in the Eastern League, AA baseball. Not a fun job. Baseball is a statistics-driven business and if you’re the person deciding on a marginal hit/error decision, people get mad at you if that decision doesn’t go their way, even if it was the right decision.

That said, the A’s scored two runs yesterday when an infield pop fell untouched to the right of the mound. Sunny day/tough sky, but a play that has to be made. No way on God’s green earth should it have been scored a hit, since it cost the pitcher two earned runs.

Didn’t matter to me personally, I was just watching the game and it seems unfair for a pitcher to be nailed for earned runs because of that misplay.

2) If Trevor Siemian starts a regular season game for the Broncos this year, he will be the first Northwestern QB to start an NFL game since Randy Dean started for the Giants on November 23, 1979.

1– Best wishes to Providence basketball coach Ed Cooley, who recently had back surgery. Cooley lost 100+ pounds a few years ago and works out a lot, but he hurt his back working out this summer. Get well soon, coach.

LEADING OFF: Indians, Rangers start big series; Segedin back
August 25, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

A VIEW FROM THE TOP

The Cleveland Indians open a four-game series at Texas, with Josh Tomlin (11-7, 4.39 ERA) facing Rangers lefty Cole Hamels (13-4, 2.80). Both clubs lead their division - the last time these teams met so late in a season with both in first place was 1999, according to STATS.

DODGER DADDY

Rob Segedin is expected to return to the Dodgers for a game against San Francisco following a one-day paternity leave and a wild start to the week. The rookie hit his first major league homer on Monday in Cincinnati, then homered off Giants ace Madison Bumgarner on Tuesday before leaving in the eighth inning and rushing to the hospital to meet his wife, Robin, for the birth of their first child. Manager Dave Roberts had to convince Segedin to take the one day of paternity leave. Matt Moore seeks his first victory with the Giants since being acquired from Tampa Bay on Aug. 1.

EMERGING ACE

Blue Jays left-hander J.A. Happ (17-3, 3.05) goes for his 18th win in a game against the Angels. Happ is 11-0 with a 2.53 ERA in his past 12 starts and has emerged as one of the best free agent acquisitions of last offseason after signing a $36 million, three-year deal. Jered Weaver (8-11, 5.47) is up for Los Angeles.

HEALED UP

Mariners lefty James Paxton (4-5, 3.53) is expected to come off the disabled list to pitch the opener of a series against the White Sox. Paxton took a line drive off his pitching elbow Aug. 7 and has been out since with a bruise. He threw 8 1/3 innings of one-run ball before being struck in a 3-1 win over the Angels.

LUCKY MOUND

Orioles righty Ubaldo Jimenez will get his first start since July 28, facing NL East-leading Washington. He'll pitch in place of ace Chris Tillman, who was put on the 15-day disabled list with bursitis in his shoulder. Jimenez is 5-10 with a 6.94 ERA this year, but he's done especially well at Nationals Park - 4-0 with a 0.92 ERA in four career starts.

Thursday's Diamond Notes
August 25, 2016

Hottest team: Dodgers (4-0 past 4, 7-3 past 10 at home)

The Dodgers have taken down the Giants in each of the first two games of their series, knocking off All-Stars Madison Bumgarner and Johnny Cueto in the process. As such, the Dodgers have pulled away from the Giants with a three-game lead in the National League West Division. A win in Thursday's game would not be a nail in the coffin, but a major setback for a San Francisco team which has frittered away a division lead and has now lost five straight against teams with a winning overall record while picking up just five wins in the past 18 games. The Dodgers have won four straight against left-handed starters while going 7-1 in their past eight at home against teams with a winning road record.

Coldest team: Indians (2-3 past five, 3-8 past 11)

The Indians won a nailbiter in the series opener at Oakland by a 1-0 score, and then the Athletics busted out the sticks and took Cleveland behind the shed by a combined 14-2 score over the final two games in the series. The Tribe continues to struggle on the road, winning just three of their past 11 road outings as their trip shifts to Texas. Realistically, this series could be an American League Championship Series preview, but if the Indians do not find a way to win on the road that would be a short series. The one thing the Indians have going in their favor is that they are 9-2 in their past 11 against American League West foes and 22-7 in their past 29 against left-handed starters. However, the Rangers are 14-3 in Cole Hamels' past 17 outing at home, and 29-8 in his past 37 overall.

Hottest pitcher: JA Happ, Blue Jays (17-3, 3.05 ERA)

Happ has been on a historic roll for the Blue Jays, winning 17 of his 20 decisions this season. Over the past few outings he has shown no signs of slowing doing, going 3-0 with a 2.33 ERA and 0.98 WHIP over the past three starts while striking out 22 and walking just four in the past 19 1/3 innings. The Blue Jays are in good shape with Happ on the hill, especially against the hapless Angels. The Halos are just 5-21 in their past 26 road games against a team with a winning record, and they're 6-14 in Jered Weaver's past 20 road outings. Meanwhile, the Jays are 21-5 in Happ's past 26 starts, and 20-7 in his past 27 home outings.

Coldest pitcher: Jered Weaver, Angels (8-11, 5.47 ERA)

Happ's counterpart, the veteran Weaver, has been awful this season. He has an 8-11 record, 5.47 ERA and 1.53 WHIP over 138 1/3 innings, as he has been extremely hittable all season. Lately it has gotten a lot worse, as Weaver is 0-3 with an 8.40 ERA and 2.13 WHIP while striking out just five over the past 15 innings. The Angels have won just one of Weaver's past six starts against a team with a winning overall record, and the Angels are 7-19 in their past 26 road games overall. Weaver hasn't been the stopper for the team, either, as the Angels are 1-7 in Weaver's past eight outings following a team loss in their previous game.

Biggest UNDER run: Royals (6-1-2 past nine, 16-5-2 past 23)

The Royals have been posting tremendous pitching results while also having a power outage at the plate. As such, 'under' results have been flowing nicely. Over the past three games Kansas City has scored a total of three runs while allowing a total of just four runs scored. During the past nine games, the Royals are allowing an average of just 1.3 runs per game. Interleague play usually means 'under' results for Kansas City, too, as the under is 4-1 in the past five interleague road games against a team with a winning record and 4-0 in Edinson Volquez's past four interleague starts.

Biggest OVER run: Braves (8-0 past eight, 11-1 past 12 and 7-0 past seven road games)

The Braves and Diamondbacks have posted quite a bit of offense and some uneven pitching in the first three games of their four-game set. The slugfest Wednesday night was the highest-scoring game yet, as Arizona outlasted Atlanta 10-9 in 11 innings to give the Braves their eighth consecutive 'over' result. Atlanta has scored at least six runs in each of the past six games, while the first three games of this series has resulted in an average of 8.0 runs per game while allowing 8.0 runs per game. As such the 'over' looks very good for both sides in the series finale.

Matchup to watch: Brewers vs. Pirates

The Brewers are a strange team figure. They traded away one of their best hitters with Jonathan Lucroy being dealt to Texas, and they were 5-14 in August through the 20th. However, they won their interleague series finale in Seattle Aug. 21 by a 7-6 score, and they swept the previously hot Colorado Rockies to carry a four-game win streak into their home series againt the Bucs. The good times could continue in Cream City, as the Pirates have dropped five of their past six games while going 1-5 in their past six outings against right-handed starting pitchers. The Brewers have also won four of the past five meetings in this series, and they have dominated the Bucs at Miller Park going 62-16 in the past 78 meetings in Wisconsin.

Betcha didn’t know: The Chicago White Sox have won five straight games against left-handed starters at home, and they're 5-1 in the past six games overall against southpaws. Plus, the Pale Hose have been hot with eight wins in the past 11 at home. They have also dominated the Mariners in recent seasons, going 35-16 in the past 51 meetings overall and 40-13 in their past 53 home games against Seattle. The M's haven't fared very well with James Paxton on the hill lately, going 4-10 in his past 14 outings and 2-10 in his past 12 starts on grass.

Biggest public favorite: Blue Jays (-235) at Angels

Biggest public underdog: Royals (+105) at Marlins

Biggest line move: Mariners (-130 to -145) at White Sox

LOS ANGELES (AP) San Francisco lefty Matt Moore lost his no-hit bid with two outs in the ninth inning on a soft, clean single by Corey Seager, and the Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-0 Thursday night.

Moore's try ended on his 133rd and final pitch - he missed most of the last two seasons after Tommy John surgery. He was immediately pulled after Seager's hit plopped onto the grass in shallow right field.

Giants center fielder Denard Span sprinted for two outstanding catches, including a leadoff grab in the ninth, to give Moore a chance.

Moore earned his first win for the Giants since they got him in a trade with Tampa Bay on Aug. 1.

Moore nearly gave San Francisco a major league record five straight years with a no-hitter. And he almost became the first Giants pitcher to no-hit the archrival Dodgers since 1915, when New York's Rube Marquard stopped Brooklyn.

NATIONALS 4, ORIOLES 0

WASHINGTON (AP) - Max Scherzer allowed two hits over eight innings, Bryce Harper had a two-run double and Washington avoided a four-game home-and-home sweep.

Scherzer (14-7) struck out 10 and did not walk a batter. He retired 12 straight after Adam Jones' fourth-inning double and 21 of 22 before Mark Trumbo's leadoff single in the eighth.

Jayson Werth's solo home run staked Washington to a 1-0 lead. Daniel Murphy's RBI double in the eighth came before Harper's second hit helped the Nationals pull away.

The Nationals had lost four straight including three in a row to the Orioles, who won twice in Baltimore before the teams shifted to Washington.

Ubaldo Jimenez (5-11) allowed one run and five hits over six innings.

Trumbo stole second base with two outs in the eighth, but J.J. Hardy flied out to deep center field on Scherzer's 95th and final pitch. Mark Melancon allowed one hit in the ninth.

METS 10, CARDINALS 6

ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis pitcher Adam Wainwright lost his glove trying to tag out Yoenis Cespedes and lost the game, too, when Alejandro De Aza homered and drove in five runs for New York.

Seth Lugo (1-2) pitched five scoreless innings for his first big league win. The Mets took two of three to win their first series at Busch Stadium since 2008.

Brandon Moss hit two home runs for the Cardinals and Jedd Gyorko and Stephen Piscotty also connected.

The Mets led 3-0 in the fifth when Wainwright (9-8) and Cespedes were involved in a bizarre play.

Cespedes tried to go from first to third on a bloop single by James Loney. When several Cardinals chased the ball, Wainwright covered third base. Cespedes slid and his cleat pinned Wainwright's glove to the bag - he would've been out, but when Wainwright pulled away his hand, the mitt stayed stuck under Cespedes' foot. Because Wainwright didn't control the ball, Cespedes was called safe in a ruling upheld by replay. Moments later, De Aza hit a three-run homer to make it 7-0.

BRAVES 3, DIAMONDBACKS 1

PHOENIX (AP) - Matt Wisler, called up from Triple-A in time to start for Atlanta, didn't allow Arizona a hit for six innings.

The 23-year-old Wisler (5-11) allowed a run and two hits with four strikeouts and three walks in eight innings. Jim Johnson pitched the ninth inning for his 12th save.

Paul Goldschmidt broke up Wisler's no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the seventh. Goldschmidt scored on Chris Owings' groundout.

Robbie Ray (7-12) was the loser.

ANGELS 6, BLUE JAYS 3

TORONTO (AP) - Albert Pujols reached the 100-RBI mark for the 13th time, the fifth player in history to achieve the feat, Mike Trout had three hits and drove in four runs, and Los Angeles beat Toronto.

Jered Weaver pitched 5 2/3 innings to snap a three-start losing streak and help the Angels win consecutive games for the first time since Aug. 2-3.

The Angels also prevented J.A. Happ from becoming the first 18-game winner in the majors. After winning 11 straight decisions, Happ (17-4) suffered his first lost since June 10 at Detroit. He allowed four runs and six hits in five innings.

One day after his 584th home run moved him past Mark McGwire into sole possession of 10th place on the career list, Pujols joined Jimmie Foxx, Lou Gehrig, Alex Rodriguez and Babe Ruth as the only players with 100 or more RBIs in 13 seasons.

RANGERS 9, INDIANS 0

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) - Cole Hamels allowed only two singles over eight innings for his 14th victory, Carlos Gomez hit a three-run homer in his first at-bat with Texas and the AL-best Rangers beat Clevelandin the opener of a four-game series matching division leaders.

Hamels (14-4) retired 19 straight batters after Francisco Lindor's two-out single to left in the first. The only other baserunner for the Indians was Carlos Santana after a leadoff hit in the eighth, though he was stranded at second after advancing on a passed ball.

Adrian Beltre and Rougned Odor also homered for the Rangers (75-53).

Josh Tomlin (11-8) lost his fifth consecutive start in August.

ROYALS 5, MARLINS 2

MIAMI (AP) - Alcides Escobar homered and drove in two runs to lead surging Kansas City past Miami.

Salvador Perez and Kendrys Morales also drove in runs. The defending champion Royals have won 15 of 18 to pull within four games of the second AL wild card spot.

Edison Volquez (10-10) pitched five innings and allowed two runs, both unearned, and three hits.

The Royals' bullpen, which has been a successful formula for the reigning two-time AL pennant winners, pitched four scoreless innings to push its franchise-record scoreless streak to 38 2/3 innings - the best in the majors since 2002-03 when San Francisco tossed 39 1/3 straight.

Kelvin Herrera pitched the ninth for his ninth save in 11 chances.

Tom Koehler (9-9) was the loser.

PIRATES 3, BREWERS 2, 10 INNINGS

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Andrew McCutchen hit a home run and a pair of RBI singles, including the tiebreaker in the 10th inning, and Pittsburgh beat Milwaukee to stop a nine-game skid at Miller Park.

McCutchen has 44 RBIs in 56 career games at Miller Park, his highest total at any opposing park.

McCutchen homered into the second tier of seats in left field off Wily Peralta in the first for his 18th home run of the season. He then hit an RBI single that beat the shift in the third.

Pinch-hitter John Jaso blooped a single off Carlos Torres (2-3), advanced on a sacrifice, took third on a ground out and scored on McCutchen's liner through the right side of the infield.

Antonio Bastardo (2-0) picked up the win in relief, and Tony Watson pitched a scoreless 10th for his eighth save.

RAYS 2, RED SOX 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Enny Romero earned his first major league save, relieving with two outs in the ninth inning and fanning Boston slugger David Ortiz to give Tampa Bay a four-game split.

After Tyler Sturdevant struck out Hanley Ramirez and Jackie Bradley Jr. to begin the ninth, Romero was summoned. Romero sent Ortiz to the ground with a high-and-tight 1-2 fastball, then got him to look at strike three. A day earlier, the 40-year-old Ortiz reached 30 home runs and 100 RBIs. Ortiz was rested for the final day of an 11-game road trip that saw Boston go 7-4. The Red Sox, who began the day tied with Toronto for the AL East lead, lost the final two games of the series.

Mikie Mahtook ended a stretch of 34 hitless at-bats with a go-ahead double in the seventh off Drew Pomeranz (10-10). Jake Odorizzi (9-5) improved to 6-0 in eight starts since the All-Star break. He gave up one run and five hits in seven innings.

WHITE SOX 7, MARINERS 6

CHICAGO (AP) - Todd Frazier tied it with an RBI single in the seventh inning and lifted Chicago past Seattle with a line drive down the left-field line in the ninth.

Adam Eaton led off the ninth with a bloop single off Nick Vincent (3-4) and went to second on Tim Anderson's sacrifice. Jose Abreu was walked intentionally before Frazier's liner over third scored Eaton, leading to a pileup of players behind the pitcher's mound.

David Robertson (4-2) worked around a walk and two incidents of fans running on the field in the ninth that delayed play for several minutes.

Robinson Cano hit his 29th home run and the Mariners wasted a solid return off the disabled list by James Paxton in their third straight loss.

TIGERS 8, TWINS 5

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - James McCann had a three-run homer and finished with four hits, Daniel Norris pitched into the seventh inning and Detroit completed a sweep for Minnesota's seventh straight loss.

The Tigers are 10-2 against the Twins this year. They have won eight in a row at Target Field.

Norris (2-2) struck out five in 6 1/3 innings, allowing six hits without a walk in his longest and strongest start this season. He took a shutout in the sixth, surrendering RBI singles by Robbie Grossman and Eduardo Escobar over his last two innings.

Francisco Rodriguez struck out two in a perfect ninth for his 35th save. Jose Berrios (2-4) was the loser.
