LOS ANGELES (AP) Corey Seager, Justin Turner and Adrian Gonzalez combined for eight hits and four RBIs, and the Los Angeles Dodgers roughed up Madison Bumgarner again to beat the San Francisco Giants 9-5 on Tuesday night.

Rob Segedin and Andrew Toles each homered, and the Dodgers extended their NL West lead to two games.

Bumgarner (12-8) is 0-2 with a 5.63 ERA in three starts against the Dodgers this season. Gonzalez hit a two-run single to center with the bases loaded against Bumgarner in the fifth to break a tie.

Kenley Jansen allowed a homer to Denard Span but still got his 36th save.

The Giants' Angel Pagan extended his hitting streak to 19 games.

Kenta Maeda (13-7) allowed three runs in five innings.

RED SOX 2, RAYS 1

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - Clay Buchholz pitched into the seventh inning, David Ortiz had a run-scoring single and Boston beat Tampa Bay to remain tied atop the AL East with Toronto.

Buchholz (5-9) allowed one run, five hits, two walks and struck out nine in 6 1/3 innings. Craig Kimbrel got the final three outs for his 23rd save.

Chris Archer (7-17) gave up two runs, five hits and threw 109 pitches in five innings for the Rays.

CUBS 5, PADRES 3

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Jake Arrieta threw eight scoreless innings of two-hit ball to become the NL's first 16-game winner and Kris Bryant and Addison Russell homered.

Arrieta (16-5) allowed a single to Alex Dickerson in the second and Christian Bethancourt's double in the eighth. Arrieta has two no-hitters in the past year.

The Padres brought the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth, but Aroldis Chapman got the last two outs for his 28th save after Felix Pena was charged with three runs.

Bryant's 33rd home run tied him with Colorado's Nolan Arenado for the NL lead.

Christian Friedrich (4-10) lost his eighth consecutive decision.

BLUE JAYS 7, ANGELS 2

TORONTO (AP) - Russell Martin had three hits and two RBIs and R.A. Dickey pitched 6 2/3 innings for his first home win since July 10.

Martin had an RBI single in the first, drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk in the third, singled and scored in the fifth, and doubled over the head of center fielder Mike Trout in the seventh.

Michael Saunders hit his 21st home run, a solo shot off A.J. Achter in the eighth, and Edwin Encarnacion and Darwin Barney each reached base three times as the Blue Jays won their fifth straight over the Angels.

Dickey (9-13) came in 2-8 with a 5.57 ERA in 13 home starts but held the Angels in check, allowing two runs and six hits.

Tyler Skaggs (1-3) allowed four runs and four hits in four-plus innings. His five walks were a season-worst.

ROYALS 1, MARLINS 0

MIAMI (AP) - Yordano Ventura escaped two threats while pitching six innings, and Kansas City extended its winning streak to nine games.

Ventura (9-9) allowed six hits and one walk while striking out six. Three relievers closed out the win and extended the bullpen's streak of 32 consecutive shutout innings since Aug. 10. Kelvin Herrera pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save.

Andrew Cashner (4-10) had his best outing in five starts for the Marlins but fell to 0-3 since joining them on July 30. He allowed one run in six innings.

BREWERS 6, ROCKIES 4

MILWAUKEE (AP) - Hernan Perez hit a two-run triple in the seventh inning, lifting Milwaukee over Colorado.

Perez hit a 0-2 pitch from Carlos Estevez into the right-field corner. Jonathan Villar scored from second and Ryan Braun from first when Daniel Descalso's cutoff throw to the plate was wide and got past catcher Nick Hundley to give Milwaukee a 5-4 lead.

Brent Suter (1-1) pitched a scoreless seventh for his first career victory in his first relief appearance after making his major league debut in a spot start Friday night. Corey Knebel pitched the ninth for his first career save in his 75th game.

Boone Logan (2-3) took the loss.

PIRATES 7, ASTROS 1

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Ivan Nova took a shutout into the ninth inning and finished with a six-hitter while Gregory Polanco hit two home runs.

Nova (10-6) struck out six, walked one and threw 69 of his 98 pitches for strikes while improving to 3-0 in four starts since being acquired from the New York Yankees in an Aug. 1 trade.

His bid for his third career shutout ended when Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve led off the ninth with consecutive doubles.

After the Pirates scored four runs in the first inning, Polanco hit solo shots in the third and fifth off Joe Musgrove (1-2) and Tony Sipp to extend the lead to 6-0 and raise his season total to a team-high 19 homers.

REDS 3, RANGERS 0

CINCINNATI (AP) - Dan Straily extended his surge since the All-Star break by pitching six innings and Joey Votto drove in a pair of runs.

Straily (10-6) hasn't allowed more than two runs in any of his eight starts since the break, going 6-0. He gave up three singles and two walks.

Tony Cingrani gave two walks in the ninth before retiring Ryan Rua on a grounder to complete his 16th save in 21 chances.

Votto singled home a run in the sixth off left-hander Derek Holland (5-6), who had been on the disabled list since June 22 with an inflamed pitching shoulder. Holland gave up four hits and a walk in six innings. He also got his first major league hit, a single off the plate that bounced over Votto's head at first base.

METS 7, CARDINALS 4

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Wilmer Flores and Justin Ruggiano homered, Jose Reyes reached four base times and scored three runs, and Asdrubal Cabrera had three hits, drove in a run and scored once.

The offense helped Robert Gsellman (1-0) get the decision in his major league debut. Gsellman, pressed into action after starter Jonathon Niese left with an injury in the first inning, pitched 3 2/3 innings without allowing an earned run.

Jeurys Familia earned his 42nd save, one shy of the Mets' season record set by Familia last year and Armando Benitez in 2001.

Cardinals lefty Jaime Garcia (10-9) gave up a season-high six runs at home, in just four innings.

ATHLETICS 9, INDIANS 1

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - Khris Davis hit a three-run homer and scored three times, and Oakland beat Cleveland to snap a three-game losing streak.

Davis had struck out in six consecutive at-bats before hitting his 33rd home run of the season off starter Danny Salazar. That's the most by an Oakland player since Jack Cust hit 33 in 2008.

Sean Manaea (5-8) allowed three hits and one run over seven innings for his second win since June 29. Manaea walked two and fanned eight to become the first A's rookie pitcher to reach 100 strikeouts since Dan Straily in 2013.

Danny Salazar (11-5) left after giving up a leadoff double in the fifth.

YANKEES 5, MARINERS 1

SEATTLE (AP) - Jacoby Ellsbury hit a two-run homer and CC Sabathia pitched seven innings to win for the third time in two months, leading New York over Mariners.

Sabathia (8-10) was 2-6 with a 6.78 ERA in his previous 11 starts. He gave up a run in the third inning on a triple by Leonys Martin and single by Ketel Marte, but allowed just one single and his lone walk over the next four innings.

Tommy Layne pitched a perfect eighth and Dellin Betances worked around a two-out single to finish the four-hitter.

Taijuan Walker (4-8), recalled earlier in the day from Triple-A Tacoma, allowed four runs - three earned - and six hits in 5 2/3 innings, with three walks and five strikeouts.

TIGERS 8, TWINS 3

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Cameron Maybin drove in three runs, including a go-ahead two-run single in the sixth inning.

Anibal Sanchez (7-12) pitched seven innings to win a start on the road for the first time since the first week of the season, and the Tigers broke the game open in the seventh with soaring home runs by Erick Aybar and Victor Martinez.

Brian Dozier gave Minnesota the lead in the fifth with his 29th homer, a new career high, but Kyle Gibson (5-8) couldn't hold it. He threw two of the team's three wild pitches in the decisive sixth.

ORIOLES 8, NATIONALS 1

BALTIMORE (AP) - Kevin Gausman scattered six hits over six shutout innings, Adam Jones went 4 for 5 and Chris Davis hit his 30th home run for Baltimore.

Gausman (5-10) walked two, struck out two and permitted only one runner past second base.

The 25-year-old outpitched Nationals rookie Reynaldo Lopez, a 22-year-old making his fifth major league start. Lopez (2-2) yielded six runs, four earned, and seven hits in 2 2/3 rocky innings.

WHITE SOX 9, PHILLIES 1

CHICAGO (AP) - Jose Abreu homered for a third straight game and Carlos Rodon threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings.

Abreu hit a two-run home run and Justin Morneau followed with a solo shot in the fifth off Jake Thompson (1-3), who gave up seven runs and eight hits in five innings.

Rodon (4-8) allowed three hits and has a 1.46 ERA in his past four starts after missing most of July with a sprained left wrist.

BRAVES 7, DIAMONDBACKS 4

PHOENIX (AP) - Matt Kemp's two-out, bases-loaded double in the eighth inning erased a one-run lead and Atlanta beat Arizona in a game between the NL's worst teams.

Jose Ramirez (2-0) allowed a hit and hit a batter but struck out the side in the seventh to get the victory. Jake Barrett (1-2) took the loss. Jim Johnson pitched a scoreless ninth for his 11th save.

Armadillo:Wednesday's six-pack

Odds to win this year’s World Series

— Cubs +300– Were +280 back on June 28

— Rangers +450– Got rid of Josh Hamilton yesterday.

— Nationals +550– Daniel Murphy, back in the playoffs.

— Giants +600– Been playing poorly since All-Star break.

— Indians +650– Terry Francona is an underrated manager.

— Dodgers +800– Use their 14th starting pitcher of year today.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Blowing off steam on a summer day

13) If you know me, you know I love numbers; I understand (most of) them and love to utilize them, but the current analytics craze has gotten goofy. There is, was and always will be a human element to sports (and life in general) that cannot be quantified by any single metric, no matter what fancy college you went to.

12) Case in point: my Oakland A’s are having a horrible year; they had a fight in the locker room last week. Player A is getting paid to wear a certain brand of spikes but wasn’t doing it and apparently the sales rep for that company was calling him on it. Player A denied it.

Player B sticks his nose into the discussion and throws Player A under the bus in front of the sales rep; when the rep left, words were exchanged, punches were thrown and Player A knocked Player B onto the DL with a concussion. Not good, especially when it becomes public.

11) So when the metrics people use WAR (the popular one-stop rating for all players), how does this incident change the ratings (if at all) for these two players? Player A put a teammate on the DL- that’s not good. Player B is a jerk who might’ve cost his teammate $20,000 by opening his yap when it wasn’t called for- that’s worse.

I’m guessing WAR doesn’t cover stuff like this (intangibles) which is why I pay so little attention to it. There is more to life than numbers, especially when you travel with the same group of people seven months at a time.

It is impossible to quantify what it means to be a good teammate, or a bad one. What if Player B had supported player A to the shoe rep?

10) Numerical guru (that is a compliment) Christopher Kamka came up with this gem last night: Kris Bryant is hitting .439 this year, with 28 runs scored and 34 RBI in Jake Arrieta’s 24 starts.

9) Bad news for the Orioles, who are 20-6 in Chris Tillman starts this year; Tillman goes on the DL with a sore shoulder. Not good.

8) Arizona Diamondback TV guys were killing Matt Kemp Monday night, talking for a decent while about how the Braves’ GM said that Kemp needed to be in better physical shape. So of course Kemp beats Arizona last night with a bases-loaded triple. Been that kind of a year in Phoenix.

7) Ryan Howard/Jayson Werth both have 38 HRs in interleague games, the active leaders in that category.

6) Joey Votto/Jose Altuve are both hitting over .400 since the All-Star break; last player to do that was Ichiro Suzuki, in 2004.

5) Rich Hill is finally making his Dodger debut today, 23 days after the A’s traded him to LA (he had blister problems). Hill becomes the Dodgers’ 14th starting pitcher this year, an awful lot for a contender.

4) Tim Tebow invited all 30 major league teams to his baseball tryout on August 30 in LA; hard to believe someone won’t take a shot and sign him, even if it is a publicity stunt. Some teams could use the publicity.

3) 7-footer CJ Gettys transfers from NC-Wilmington to Rutgers, where he can play against more guys his size. Gettys scored 5.4 ppg with 5.1 rebounds/game LY, but UNCW is a pressing team now, which doesn’t help Gettys. Odd thing is that the Seahawks are a better team than Rutgers, which only sees the NCAAs if they watch TV. UNCW gave Duke a pretty good game in the first round of the NCAAs last March.

2) RIP to the fine actor Steven Hill, 94, who passed away this week. Hill was most famous for his role as DA Adam Schiff on Law and Order; he was also in movies like The Firm and White Palace. RIP, sir.

1- If third-party Presidential candidate Gary Johnson changed his last name to “Noneoftheabove”, he might win the election, because if I see “none of the above” on my ballot in November, I’m voting for it, and I don’t think I’m the only person with that opinion.

LEADING OFF: Hill debuts with Dodgers, Tanaka vs Iwakuma
August 24, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

HILL'S DODGERS DEBUT

Left-hander Rich Hill makes his first start for the Dodgers since being acquired from Oakland on Aug. 1 and jumps straight into Los Angeles' NL West rivalry with the Giants. Hill was on the disabled list with a blister on his left middle finger before the trade and will be activated to make this start. He was 9-3 with a 2.25 ERA in 14 starts for the A's. Johnny Cueto (14-3, 2.90) pitches for San Francisco.

JAPANESE REUNION

Former Japanese league teammates Masahiro Tanaka and Hisashi Iwakuma face off when the Yankees play at Seattle. The pair worked in Rakuten's rotation from 2007-11, playing in the finals in 2009. They already pitched against each other once this season, when Tanaka's Yankees got a 4-3 victory in New York in April.

RICK ROLLING

Red Sox righty Rick Porcello (17-3, 3.22) can become the majors' first 18-game winner when Boston plays at Tampa Bay. Porcello already has a career high for victories and is tied with Toronto's J.A. Happ for the majors' lead.

BATTED AROUND

Pirates ace Gerrit Cole (7-8, 3.30) tries to get back on track in a matinee against Houston. Batters have 24 hits and a .453 average against Cole in his past two starts, a huge spike from the .258 average he allowed in his first 17 starts. Astros righty Collin McHugh (7-10, 4.99) is 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA in his past five starts.

BAUER POWER

Indians righty Trevor Bauer faces Oakland after striking out a career-high 13 in a 3-2 win over Toronto last time out. Bauer has an inconsistent track record but has been better this season in part because he's inducing more groundballs - his 49 percent grounder rate this year is about 10 points better than his 2015 mark. Kendall Graveman (9-8, 4.09) is coming off a two-hit shutout of the White Sox.

DARVISH DEALING

Yu Darvish (4-3, 2.75) is rounding into form for the Rangers and gets his next test against Cincinnati. Darvish has pitched at least six innings in each of his last six starts, averaging 96 pitches in that stretch as he returns from Tommy John surgery.

Hottest team: Royals (9-0 last nine)

Kansas City’s pitching continues to shut down the opposition as the Royals allowed one run or less in seven of the past eight games. The latest gem came in Tuesday’s 1-0 triumph at Miami to extend Kansas City’s winning streak to nine games as Yordano Ventura tossed six innings, while the bullpen hasn’t given up a single run during this hot stretch. The defending champions still have work to do for a third straight playoff appearance, as they trail the Orioles by four games for the second AL Wild Card berth. Tonight’s task won’t be easy for Kansas City, facing Miami ace Jose Fernandez, who is 9-2 at home this season, but has lost his last two decisions at Marlins Park.

Coldest team: Angels (3-15 last 18)

This season couldn’t end fast enough for Los Angeles, who is three games ahead of Minnesota for the worst record in the American League. The Angels were routed by the Blue Jays on Tuesday, 7-2 as L.A. has scored two runs or less in four straight games. The highway has been a disastrous place for the Halos, who have lost 11 consecutive road games, as their last away victory came on July 26 at Kansas City. Matt Shoemaker is responsible for four of those road setbacks during this stretch, as the offense scored one run in three of those defeats.

Hottest pitcher: Rick Porcello, Red Sox (17-3, 3.22 ERA)

Boston has been terrific on its current road trip by posting a 7-2 record following Tuesday’s 2-1 triumph at Tampa Bay. Porcello goes for an Major League-leading 18th victory tonight, as the right-hander has won in nine of his last 10 trips to the mound since the end of June. Two of those victories came in dominating efforts against the Rays, allowing a total of two earned runs in 13 innings of work, while compiling a 3-0 record against Tampa Bay this season. Porcello has been a work-horse down the stretch by tossing at least seven innings in five straight outings, capped off by a win over his former team, Detroit in his last start.

Coldest pitcher: James Shields, White Sox (5-15, 5.98 ERA)

Shields pitched well for a month from the end of June until the final week of July, allowing eight earned runs in six starts, all quality outings. Then, the veteran right-hander reverted back to his early-season struggles by giving up an eye-opening 27 earned runs in his last four trips to the mound, including nine home runs. The Sox have lost six of Shields’ last eight starts, including four of the past five outings at U.S. Cellular Field. The only piece of good news for Shields is that Philadelphia pitching has given up 18 runs in the last two games, including nine in Tuesday’s 9-1 rout by Chicago.

Biggest UNDER run: Pirates (6-1 last seven at home)

Pittsburgh snapped a four-game losing streak on Tuesday behind a tremendous pitching performance from former Yankee Ivan Nova, who tossed a complete game in a 7-1 triumph over Houston. The Pirates’ offense finally busted out after scoring four runs combined in their previous three losses, as runs have been hard to come by at PNC Park lately. In five of the last seven games in Pittsburgh, the Pirates and their opponent have combined to plate five runs or less. That UNDER streak may come to an end today in their finale against the Astros, as Gerrit Cole is riding a five-start OVER string, while the Pirates’ righty has given up 12 hits in each of his last two outings.

Biggest OVER run: Braves (7-0 last seven)

After squandering an early 5-0 lead in Monday’s 9-8 walk-off loss at Arizona, the Braves rebounded with four late runs to beat the D-backs, 7-4 last night to register a seventh consecutive OVER. Atlanta’s offense has been responsible for this OVER run by scoring at least six runs in five straight games, but the Braves’ pitching staff needs to take credit (or blame) for this streak by allowing seven runs or more five times. Will the streak end tonight? Zack Greinke heads to the mound for Arizona, who has cashed three consecutive UNDERS at Chase Field, while Atlanta’s Julio Teheran is 6-1 to the UNDER in the past seven road starts.

Matchup to watch: Giants vs. Dodgers

San Francisco led Los Angeles by 6 ½ games heading into the All-Star break, but that advantage has disappeared. Following a 9-5 victory at Chavez Ravine last night by the Dodgers, Los Angeles has built a 2 ½-game lead over San Francisco in the NL West as the Giants have dropped 13 of 18 road contests since the break.

The Giants are currently on a 2-8 run the last 10 games, while the Dodgers rebounded from a three-game losing streak on their road trip at Philadelphia and Cincinnati to register three straight victories. Johnny Cueto was a Cy Young candidate following the first half, but the Giants’ right-hander has won only one decision in seven second half starts. Since the start of July, Cueto has allowed at least four earned runs in four of five starts away from AT&T Park.

Rich Hill will make his much-anticipated Dodgers’ debut after getting acquired from the Athletics last month. The southpaw has been sidelined due to a blister on his pitching hand, as Hill compiled a 9-3 record along with a 2.25 ERA with Oakland this season.

Betcha didn’t know: Cardinals’ right-hander Carlos Martinez has turned into one of the most reliable road pitchers this season by owning a 7-1 record and 2.36 ERA away from Busch Stadium. Pitching at home has been a different story for Martinez, as the Cardinals are 4-8 in his 12 starts by the Arch as St. Louis continues its series with New York tonight. Something has to give tonight as Jacob deGrom has struggled in the role of a road underdog for the Mets, losing all three starts this season, including his last time out at San Francisco.

Biggest public favorite: Cubs (-250) at Padres

Biggest public underdog: Tigers (+105) at Twins

Biggest line move: Dodgers (-125 to -140) vs. Giants

The Pharmacist Had Never Had a Similar Request Before...

Two nuns were in the back of the convent smoking a cigarette, when one said, "It's bad enough that we have to sneak out here to smoke, but it really is a problem getting rid of the butts so that Mother Superior doesn't find them."

The second nun said, "I've found a marvelous invention called a condom which works really well for this problem. You just open the packet up, take out the condom, and put the cigarette butt in, roll it up, and dispose of it all later."

The first nun was quite impressed and asked where she could find them. "You get them at a drug store, sister. Just go and ask the pharmacist for them."

The next day the good sister went to the drug store and walked up to the counter. "Good morning, sister," the pharmacist said, "what can I do for you today?" "I'd like some condoms please," said the nun.

The pharmacist was a little taken aback, but recovered soon enough and asked, "How many boxes would you like? There are 12 to a box." "I'll take six boxes. That should last about a week," said the nun.

The pharmacist was truly flabbergasted by this time and was almost afraid to ask any more questions. But his professionalism prevailed and he asked in a clear voice. "Sister, what size condoms would you like? We have large, extra large, and the 'big liar' size."

The sister thought for a minute and finally said: "I'm not certain, I'm looking for something to put on a camel."
