LEADING OFF: Werth goes for reach record, Cubs hit road
August 19, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

STREAKING

Jayson Werth has reached base safely in 46 straight games, tying the Nationals franchise mark set by Rusty Staub for Montreal spanning the 1969-70 seasons. Werth hit an RBI double Thursday night at Atlanta to extend the string and can set the team record vs. the Braves.

REMEMBER ME?

Red Sox ace Rick Porcello faces his former team when Boston takes on the Tigers at Comerica Park. Porcello pitched for Detroit from 2009-14 and is 16-3 with a 3.30 ERA this season. Rookie Michael Fulmer (10-3) starts against him.

ON THE ROAD

Winners in 18 of their last 21 games and owners of the best record in the majors, the Chicago Cubs are set to spend some time away from Wrigley Field. They open a nine-game trip in Colorado, where Kyle Hendricks (11-7, 2.19) starts vs. the Rockies at Coors Field. Chicago plays 18 of its next 25 on the road.

SLIDERS

Astros righty Collin McHugh and Orioles lefty Wade Miley are both overdue for a victory going into a matchup of playoff contenders at Camden Yards. McHugh is 0-4 with a 7.65 ERA in his last four starts. Miley makes his fourth start since being traded from Seattle - he's 0-2 with a 7.04 ERA with the Orioles.

TRY AGAIN

James Shields has a 20.25 ERA in his last three starts for the White Sox. He'll try to reverse that slide when he pitches at home against Oakland. Shields is 5-14 overall this season - he's 3-7 with a 7.34 ERA since Chicago got him in a trade with the Padres.

MLB betting cheat sheet and odds: American League Arms Race

Two of the American League top pitching staffs face off when the Blue Jays visit the Indians this weekend.

September baseball is getting closer, making each matchup with playoff implications more and more intriguing. We break it all down in our betting cheat sheet highlighted by a series between division leaders Cleveland and Toronto.

Coors Field Fireworks

Bettors are used to high totals when the Colorado Rockies are at home, but things could get positively crazy this weekend as the NL Central-leading Chicago Cubs pay a visit to homer-friendly Coors Field. The Cubs have the best ERA in baseball, but have still gone 31-21-4 O/U on the road. The Rockies are a healthy 31-26-3 O/U at home this season despite sky-high totals. That said, Colorado is just 4-6-1 O/U in its last 11 home games.

Big Markets, Small Stakes

Two of baseball’s biggest markets square off this weekend - but there won’t be much to play for as the New York Yankees visit the Los Angeles Angels for a three-game set beginning Friday night. The Yankees had high hopes coming into the season, but are fourth in the American League East and have the second-worst units won total (-278) in the division. The Angels are even worse off, sitting in last place in the AL West.

Arms Race

The top two pitching staffs in the American League face off this weekend in Cleveland as the Central-leading Indians welcome the East-leading Toronto Blue Jays to Progressive Field. The Blue Jays have the lowest ERA in the AL at 3.74, a big reason why they’re 17 games above .500 - and just 48-68-5 O/U. Cleveland is next at staff ERA at 3.84, and are comfortably ahead of the Detroit Tigers for the division lead.

Hitting Notes

* How bad have the Yankees been? They’re wasting an incredible start from catcher Gary Sanchez, who has five home runs in his last seven games as he has taken over the starting role from Brian McCann. Unfortunately, the Yankees have won just one of the four games in which he has gone deep; they’re also 4-0 O/U in those contests.

* Colorado Rockies outfielder Charlie Blackmon has been even hotter, belting nine home runs over his previous nine games to reach 21 on the season. The Rockies have seen most of those recent blasts go to waste, going 1-4 SU in the five games in which Blackmon has homered; that includes losses in both of his multi-homer contests.

Pitching Notes

* Over bettors have made a killing in Jose Berrios outings. The Minnesota Twins rookie has struggled mightily over his first seven starts, yielding 29 runs over 28 innings; the Twins are 2-5 SU and a near-perfect 6-0-1 O/U in those outings. He has a Friday date with the Kansas City Royals, who enter the four-game set 1-5 O/U in their previous six home games.

*Chris Tillman starts have been profitable for bettors so far this season; he’ll look to pad his money lead Saturday as his Baltimore Orioles host the Houston Astros. The Orioles are 20-5 in Tillman’s 25 starts, and he comes into the weekend with a slight units lead ($1,553) over Detroit’s Michael Fulmer. Tillman has parlayed a win and the Over 14 times this season.

Totals Trends

After a minor Under run following the All-Star break, the Cincinnati Reds are back to being a strong over play, going 8-2 O/U over a 10-game stretch prior to Thursday’s tilt with the Miami Marlins.

Ump Stat of the Day

The Nationals probably don't need an extra edge when they visit the Braves tonight (Nats are 23-5 in the last 28 meetings), but the road team is 8-1 in Dan Bellino's last nine games behind home plate. Bellino is one of the top "road umps" this season with away teams going 13-8 when he calls balls and strikes. That's where he'll be for tonight's contest, where Washington is currently a -144 road fave.

Friday's Weather Report

There is plenty of weather in the forecast for Friday's schedule of games.

* Starting in Philadelphia, there is a slight 17 percent chance of rain, as well as a seven to eight mile per hour wind gusting out to left field for today's game between the Phillies and Cardinals. The total is currently 9.0.

* In Cleveland, there is a 28 percent chance of rain and a chance of thunderstorms for tonight's game between the Indians and Blue Jays. The total for the game is currently 9.5.

* At Comerica Park in Detroit there is a 31 percent chance of rain and a chance of thunderstorms when the Tiger host the Red Sox. The total for the game is currently 8.5.

* There will be a 30 percent chance of rain in Cincinnati when the reds host the Dodgers at Great American Ball Park Friday. There is also a chance of thunderstorms in the region. The total for the game is currently 9.5.

* In Atlanta, there is a 47 percent chance of rain for the game between the Braves and Nationals. There is also a chance of thunderstorms. The total is currently 7.5.

* On the south side of Chicago, the White Sox are scheduled to host the Athletics with a 20 percent chance of rain, chance of thunderstorms and a seven to eight mile per hour wind gusting in from right field. The total is currently 9.5.

* At Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, there is a 44 percent chance of rain for tonight's game against the Twins. There is also a chance of thunderstorms and a seven to eight mile per hour wind gusting out to left field. The total is currently 9.0.

* At Coors Field, pitchers will actually be given a hand for a change tonight when the Rockies host the Cubs. There is a 10-11 mile per hour wind expected to be gusting in from center field during the game. There is also a 42 percent chance of rain and a chance of thunderstorms. The total is currently 10.5.

Marlins, Pirates square off
August 19, 2016

MIAMI MARLINS at PITTSBURGH PIRATES

First pitch: Friday, 7:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Pirates -185, Marlins +170, Total: 7.5 (Over -120)

The Marlins and Pirates meet in Pittsburgh on Friday and both teams are looking to earn one of the NL Wild Card spots this year.

Miami was dealt a difficult blow by losing OF Giancarlo Stanton (Groin) for the remainder of the season, but the team still has a chance to make the postseason and must do its best to move on.

The Marlins are very much in the NL Wild Card race and that makes this game with the Pirates a big one, as Pittsburgh also finds itself battling for one of those two spots.

After a lousy first half of the season, the Pirates have seemingly put it together and will be hoping to win this one with RHP Gerrit Cole (7-8, 3.25 ERA, 86 K) on the mound.

Cole will be going up against RHP Tom Koehler (9-8, 3.86 ERA, 107 K) of the Marlins, and that should be a very good showdown on the mound.

Cole is still trying to find his groove after getting injured a few weeks ago and Koehler has pitched extremely well for the Marlins in recent weeks.

The Pirates will be happy to be playing this one at home, as they are 33-25 when playing in Pittsburgh this season. They’re also 44-35 when playing in night games.

Tom Koehler has been huge for Miami this season, adding a much-needed reliable presence in the rotation. He’ll now be counted on again, as the team could really use a victory in Pittsburgh on Friday.

Koehler doesn’t have stuff that will wow anybody, but he does effectively pitch to contact. He’ll be hoping to avoid making any mistakes on Friday, as he will be just fine in this game as long as he doesn’t allow too many homers.

He has had no problem doing that lately, as he has allowed none in five of the past seven games for Miami. Offensively, the Marlins are going to need a huge game out of OF Christian Yelich.

With Stanton out, Yelich is really the only guy in this lineup that is truly dangerous. He also happens to be dominant against Cole in his career, as he is 5-for-11 with two homers and four RBI against the righty. It’d be huge for Miami if he can get it going in this one.

Gerrit Cole is still trying to find his footing this season and just might be coming off of his worst start of the yearon Aug. 13. Cole faced the Dodgers in that game and allowed five earned runs on 12 hits in just 4.1 innings of work.

He is going to need to find a way to do a better job of avoiding contact in this one. He is normally a guy that misses a ton of bats, so the Pirates will be hoping that Cole has his best stuff on Friday.

Offensively, Pittsburgh will be expecting guys like OFs Andrew McCutchen and Gregory Polanco to come up with some big hits in this one. The two of them are a combined 7-for-13 with three doubles, a homer and three RBI against Koehler in their careers.

McCutchen also happens to be red-hot coming into this one, as he has seen his average rise from .241 to .248 over the past 10 games and has racked up seven RBI over the past six games.

Donaldson, Tulowitzki out for Blue Jays
August 19, 2016

CLEVELAND (AP) Toronto Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson and shortstop Troy Tulowitzki are out of Friday night's lineup for the series opener against Cleveland because of injuries.

Donaldson has a jammed right thumb and Tulowitzki has a sore calf. They were injured Wednesday in a game at Yankee Stadium and the AL East leaders were off Thursday.

Manager John Gibbons expects both to be available Saturday.

Darwin Barney is starting at third base and Ryan Goins, recalled from Triple-A Buffalo, is playing short. Outfielder Darrell Ceciliani was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo.

Dodgers ace Kershaw rejoins team to continue comeback
August 19, 2016

CINCINNATI (AP) Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw missed his teammates so much that he flew from Los Angeles to Cincinnati just to work out with them.

The injured left-hander threw on flat ground Friday before their game against the Reds, the last step before he throws off a mound in the bullpen for the first time in more than a month.

''I feel good so far,'' said Kershaw, who has been sidelined since June 26 with a herniated disk. ''It's a one-step-at-a-time thing. I throw a bullpen tomorrow. That's another step. I've been throwing for the last week-and-a-half, and I haven't had any problems.''

The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner and 2014 Most Valuable Player is expected to pitch off a mound on Saturday for the first time since throwing in a simulated game on July 16. That step followed an aggressive rehab program and aggravated his symptoms, leading to a complete shutdown.

Kershaw, who was 11-2 with a 1.79 ERA when he was injured, is optimistic he'll have better results this time.

''We got to the point the last time where I was throwing off the mound,'' he said. ''This time, I've done everything I need to do. We gave it a shot the first time, and we were pretty aggressive. There were no signs that it would backfire, but it did. This time, we've been more conservative.''

Kershaw was asked why he decided to rejoin his teammates in Cincinnati.

''Skyline Chili,'' he said, smiling, mentioning a local delicacy. ''It's fun to be on the road with the guys. It's no fun watching on TV. I like being on the road.''

MLB clears Howard, Zimmerman
August 19, 2016

NEW YORK (AP) Philadelphia's Ryan Howard and Washington's Ryan Zimmerman have been cleared by Major League Baseball of allegations they used human growth hormone.

Pharmacist Charlie Sly claimed in an Al-Jazeera America documentary ''The Dark Side: Secrets of Sports Doping,'' which was broadcast Dec. 27, that the two used HGH. Sly, who worked as an intern at an anti-aging clinic, later recanted his claims.

In a brief statement Friday, MLB said its investigation ''did not find any violations of the Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program by either Howard or Zimmerman.''

MLB said the players cooperated with its investigation and Sly did not. Howard and Zimmerman denied the allegations and filed defamation suits against Al-Jazeera in January.

''The accusations from Al-Jazeera came out of nowhere, and I was shocked and outraged by their false claims,'' Howard said in a statement. ''I welcomed the investigation by Major League Baseball as an opportunity to clear my name. I was fully cooperative and transparent in the process, and MLB's findings validate what I have said publicly.''

Said Zimmerman: ''I understand why Major League Baseball found it necessary to explore this matter, and I appreciate that MLB, after a thorough investigation, was able to publicly affirm my innocence. Throughout my life and career, I have been true to myself, my family, the Nationals organization and my community. It is not right that a so-called news organization and its personnel can publicly make false accusations that damage my reputation and call into question my integrity without any consequences whatsoever.''

Both players reiterated they would press forward with their defamation claims.

Former major league catcher Taylor Teagarden, another player implicated in the Al-Jazeera report, was suspended for 80 games in April.

The report also implicated NFL players Peyton Manning, Clay Matthews, Julius Peppers, James Harrison and Mike Neal. Manning, now retired, was cleared by the NFL after an investigation. The NFL is still investigating Matthews and Peppers, who play for Green Bay, Pittsburgh's Harrison and Neal, a free agent.

BALTIMORE (AP) Jose Altuve homered and had five RBIs, and the Houston Astros beat the Baltimore Orioles 15-8 on Friday night despite allowing four home runs in the first inning.

Altuve became the first Astro to have 20 homers and 20 steals in a season since Carlos Beltran in 2004. George Springer went 4 for 5 with a homer and the Astros also got long balls from Evan Gattis and Teoscar Hernandez in ending a five-game losing streak.

The Orioles became the first team in the modern era (since 1900) to open a game with four home runs before making an out. Adam Jones hit Collin McHugh's first pitch into the seats in left field and Hyun Soo Kim singled before Manny Machado, Chris Davis and Mark Trumbo homered in succession.

Pedro Alvarez added a fifth-inning drive for the Orioles, They have 11 home runs in the first two games of this series. Baltimore didn't have enough firepower in this one to overcome its poor pitching, which surrendered a season-high 15 runs and 18 hits.

Chris Devenski (2-4) allowed one hit in four innings for the Astros after McHugh yielded seven runs and nine hits in three innings. Ubaldo Jimenez (5-10) was the loser.

INDIANS 3, BLUE JAYS 2

CLEVELAND (AP) - Tyler Naquin hit a game-ending inside-the-park homer, sprinting around the bases to cap a two-run rally in the ninth inning as Cleveland stunned Toronto.

Toronto took a 2-1 lead into the ninth in a matchup of AL division leaders. Closer Roberto Osuna (2-2) retired the first batter, but Jose Ramirez tied it with a home run.

Naquin followed with a drive that hit the top of the right-field wall, above the leap of Michael Saunders. The ball caromed away at an angle and center fielder Melvin Upton Jr. gave chase as Naquin rounded second base. Upton finally retrieved the ball, but fell down as third base coach Mike Sarbaugh waved Naquin home. Upton flung it toward the infield, and Naquin stumbled home and scored with a head-first dive way ahead of second baseman Devon Travis' relay.

Jeff Manship (2-1) pitched the ninth for the win. Osuna blew his third save in 30 chances.

Cleveland starter Trevor Bauer struck out a career-high 13 in eight innings. Russell Martin hit a two-run homer in the first for Toronto.

ATHLETICS 9, WHITE SOX 0

CHICAGO (AP) - Kendall Graveman faced one batter over the minimum while throwing a two-hitter, Khris Davis hit his 31st home run and Oakland beat Chicago to hand James Shields his 15th loss.

JT Realmuto, who homered in going 3 for 3, drew a leadoff walk in the Miami ninth from Neftali Feliz (4-1). Realmuto moved up on a sacrifice bunt and scored when Andino lined his single into left field.

Christian Yelich and Miguel Rojas also each had three hits and a homer to help the Marlins win for the third time in nine games.

Fernando Rodney wound up with his 22nd save in 24 opportunities. He issued an intentional walk to load the bases for McCutchen, but the former NL MVP stayed stuck in a season-long slump when he bounced into a double play. Nick Wittgren (4-2) pitched a scoreless eighth.

RED SOX 10, TIGERS 2

DETROIT (AP) - David Ortiz homered and Rick Porcello pitched seven innings in his return to Comerica Park in Boston's victory over Detroit.

Porcello, who spent the first six seasons of his career with the Tigers and moved to Boston before the 2015 season, was pitching in Detroit for the first time since the trade.

Porcello (17-3) gave up two runs - one earned - four hits and two walks while striking out eight. His only major mistake was J.D. Martinez's two-run homer in the second inning.

Jackie Bradley Jr. also homered for Boston, and Hanley Ramirez drove in four runs.

The Tigers have lost nine of 12.

NATIONALS 7, BRAVES 6

ATLANTA (AP) - Clint Robinson hit a tiebreaking single with two outs in the ninth and Washington beat Atlanta after giving up a three-run lead.

Robinson's single to left field off Jim Johnson (2-6) drove in pinch-runner Pedro Severino from second base. Severino replaced Wilson Ramos, who singled.

The Nationals led 6-3 in the eighth before the Braves took advantage of throwing errors by shortstop Danny Espinosa and third baseman Anthony Rendon to score three runs. Freddie Freeman's two-run double off Koda Glover (1-0) tied it.

The NL East-leading Nationals improved to 10-1 against the last-place Braves this season. Washington has won 24 of 30 games in the rivalry since the start of the 2015 season.

Mark Melancon pitched the ninth for his 35th save.

ROCKIES 7, CUBS 6, 11 INNINGS

DENVER (AP) - Ryan Raburn hit an RBI double and continued home when the Cubs threw away the relay, capping Colorado's two-run rally in the 11th inning against Aroldis Chapman.

On a wet night when rain delayed the start for more than two hours, and with temperatures dropping into the 40s, the Rockies wound up winning well past midnight.

Nick Hundley singled with one out off Chapman (0-1). Raburn then tied it with a drive off the right-field wall. And when second baseman Javier Baez made a wild throw that got past catcher Willson Contreras and flew into the Cubs' dugout, the umpires waved Raburn home.

Matt Carasiti (1-0) got the win.

GIANTS 8, METS 1

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Johnny Cueto pitched seven effective innings and ended his six-start winless streak, and San Francisco Giants broke away late.

Denard Span had four hits and Conor Gillaspie homered as the Giants moved back ahead of the Dodgers for the NL West lead. Pinch-hitter Ehire Adrianza singled to break a 1-all tie in the seventh.

Cueto (14-3) allowed one run and eight hits. Seth Lugo (0-2) lost in his first major league start.

PADRES 7, DIAMONDBACKS 4, 10 INNINGS

SAN DIEGO (AP) - Ryan Schimpf's second homer of the game was a three-run shot in the 10th inning that boosted San Diego.

Yangervis Solarte drew a one-out walk from Patrick Corbin (4-13) in the 10th before Alex Dickerson singled, bringing up Schimpf.

Schimpf hit a two-run homer in the eighth off Enrique Burgos that tied it 4.

Arizona loaded the bases in the top of the 10th against Kevin Quackenbush (7-4), but Jake Lamb struck out.

Jean Segura had five hits and drove in two runs for the Diamondbacks.

MARINERS 7, BREWERS 6

SEATTLE (AP) - Kyle Seager got Seattle started with a solo home run and Robinson Cano added a two-run shot.

The Mariners won their seventh straight at Safeco Field. Adam Lind also homered for Seattle.

Closer Edwin Diaz gave up two runs in the ninth before striking out Hernan Perez with a runner on third for his ninth save.

Chris Carter hit the longest recorded home run in Safeco Field history, estimated at 465 feet. Jonathan Villar and Keon Broxton also homered for the Brewers.

Wade LeBlanc (3-0) got the win.

Brent Suter (0-1) made his major league debut. He became the first left-handed pitcher to start for the Brewers since Aug. 23, 2013.

ROYALS 5, TWINS 4, 11 INNINGS

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Eric Hosmer hit a game-ending single in the 11th inning and Kansas City matched a season high with its sixth straight win.

There was a 3-hour, 3-minute rain delay in the top of the fifth, plus a 12-minute delay when some of the lights went out in the bottom of the sixth. The game did not end until seven hours after the first pitch.

Chien-Ming Wang (6-0) allowed one single in two innings. J.T. Chargois (0-1) gave up Hosmer's hit.

LEADING OFF: Sanchez starts again for Jays, Tillman for O's
August 20, 2016

A look at what's happening all around the majors today:

TAKE IT EASY

Toronto righty Aaron Sanchez makes his first start in a week, pitching at Cleveland. Sanchez (12-2, 2.84 ERA) was an All-Star this summer, but the AL East-leading Blue Jays are trying to limit his innings in a season they hope will last well into October.

GETTING CLOSE

Athletics shortstop Marcus Semien had an RBI single Friday night while playing in his 124th consecutive game. But that streak may soon end.

''His wife is going to have something to say about that,'' Oakland manager Bob Melvin said.

Semien's wife is due Saturday.

READY NOW

Chris Tillman (15-4, 3.46) gets the call for Baltimore after having his start Wednesday pushed back because of a sore right shoulder. He faces the Astros at Camden Yards.

STRUGGLING SALE

White Sox ace Chris Sale (14-6, 3.30 ERA) seeks his first win since July 2 when he faces the visiting A's. The lefty is 0-4 in his past six outings, and has allowed eight earned runs and 15 hits in his last two starts.

NICE START

Pirates righty Chad Kuhl (3-0, 3.73) makes his seventh career start, taking on the visiting Marlins. Pittsburgh is 6-0 in games the rookie has pitched.

STILL HEALING

Reds slugger Adam Duvall has missed four straight starts after fouling a ball off his left instep. The All-Star outfielder has hit 27 home runs in his first full season in the majors.
