Tournament Forecast

February 14, 2014

This is our third installment of bracketology and comes as we head into the final stretch of conference play.

Below we breakdown each conference into four buckets:

1) Automatic bid [discussed in next sentence]

2) Looking good [teams highly likely to play well enough over the final month of the regular season to earn a bid]

3) Need wins [teams that are firmly on the bubble and will need to play well to close their season]

4) Life support [teams that still have an outside shot at earning a bid if they close season strong but are closer to falling off list vs. earning a bid]

For the non-AQ conferences we generally select the team with the highest RPI as the conference winner/automatic bid.

Teams are also listed in the s-curve order I see them now within conference. In addition ratings in team discussion are quoted as RPI/BPI/SBPI (my new Power Ratings for college basketball), and records listed are vs. Top 25/Top 50/Top 100 (aggregated).

Lastly, I always err on the side of including a team versus adding them to a later version, and also lean towards rating a team below where they should be as I look to avoid sliding teams backwards in the buckets.

America East: Vermont

American Athletic: Louisville

Looking Good: Cincinnati, UConn, Memphis

Need Wins: SMU (19-5/8-3) – the Mustangs have been upgraded from Life Support last edition following wins over Memphis & Cincinnati. They are now 8-1 in their L9 overall, have ratings of #39/#25/#85 and a solid conference record. SMU is just 1-2/3-3/4-4 which are improved and turning into a positive; as long as they win the games they should I expect the Mustangs to be invited to the Big Dance for the first time in 20+ years.

Atlantic Ten: St. Louis

Looking Good: VCU, UMass, George Washington

Need Wins: Richmond (16-8/6-3) – ratings of #40/#66/#82 leave a lot to be desired but the Spiders are playing their best ball since conference play began going 6-2 over their L8 with those pair of losses coming at St. Louis & at VCU. For the A10 to get 5+ teams in the big dance these three bubble teams led by Richmond will need to continue picking up as their record splits are a respectable 1-3/2-5/6-8. The Spiders schedule down the stretch is not tough as 4 of 7 will come at home, and 2 of the 3 road games are at George Mason & Rhode Island – who are among 4 teams tied for last place in the conference. Home games versus GW & VCU, along with their last game of the regular season at Dayton will be huge in determining their fate – and they must be targeting 2-1 in those.

St. Joseph’s, PA (16-7/6-3) – the Hawks have ratings of #45/#69/#67 and records of 2-4/2-5/3-6, both in bubble territory. What really keeps the Hawks alive is the pair of Top 25 wins they picked up over the last two weeks, proving they are bubble worthy at this point. Like Richmond they close with a favorable schedule with a home game vs. Dayton and a roadie at GW the only two of seven coming against teams in contention for a bid. They likely need 5-2 or better over those 7 which would leave them at 21-9/11-5; adding in a conference tourney win or two on top of that could be enough.

Life Support: Dayton (17-8/5-5) – ratings of #56/#55/#44 have improved of late and have the Flyers back on the fringe of bubble discussion; but make no mistake they have a lot of work left to do to even come up in discussion on Selection Sunday. Records of 1-2/3-4/6-5 are OK (especially 3 Top 50 wins), but a 5-5 mark in the A10 needs improvement. Dayton easily has the toughest schedule of the three bubble A10 teams with games @STJ, UMASS, @STL, RICH still on the slate. That is good and bad; they will have plenty of chances to improve their resume, but should they lose just two more conference games their best A10 record would be 9-7, which would not be good enough for at-large consideration.

ACC: Syracuse

Looking Good: Duke, Virginia, Pittsburgh

Need Wins: North Carolina (16-7/6-4) – UNC has been climbing of late now sitting with ratings of #33/#33/#22, and also sporting impressive record splits of 2-3/4-3/7-5 – all well within at-large range leading the Tar Heels to likely inclusion in the Looking Good category next edition. UNC has won 5 straight and 6 of 7 but still has 8 games remaining in their regular season with 5 of those coming against teams listed here. Even if UNC goes just 4-4 down the stretch leaving them at 20-11/10-8 they would be a lock to earn a bid.

Life Support: Florida State (14-10/5-7) – arguably no team has hurt themselves since our last edition as much as FSU has considering they have gone just 2-6 in their L8, leaving them very much in danger of missing the dance (especially when considering those two wins came at home against Notre Dame & Virginia Tech). Their closing schedule is manageable while offering chances to pick up the big wins they so badly need: expect their chances to boil down to three games – UNC, @Pitt, Syracuse – win 2 of those 3 along with the other 3 (meaning a 5-1 close) and they would finish 19-11/10-8, earning them a bid most likely with one ACC Tournament win. With a 4-2 close their chances wouldn’t be null, but they would have work to do in the ACC Tournament. Their current rankings are #63/#49/#63, and they own records of 2-5/2-6/4-9 – firmly at best on the bubble.

NC State (16-8/6-5) – the Pack have improved their resume the last 2 weeks as they now sit at #51/#72/#97, which is marginal in RPI but leaving a lot to be desired in BPI & SBPI. Records of 0-3/1-6/5-7 are not up to snuff despite winning 5 of their last 6, many of which have unfortunately come not only at home, but against the bottom teams in the conference. They still have to face the 3 teams of note FSU does, and their other 4 (again like FSU) come against teams not listed here – so there is still a legitimate chance especially considering the way they are currently playing that they remain on fire. However, they need signature wins badly; like FSU NC State hopes to reach 10 conference wins to feel solid about their chances – that means a 4-3 finish with at least one win versus Syracuse, UNC or Pittsburgh. A 9-9 conference record without a win over at least one of the big three they will face down the stretch will leave too much work to be done in the ACC Tournament.

Clemson (15-8/6-5) – very possibly the last team included on life support in any conference this edition, similar to last time. Ratings of #68/#58/#74 show a lot of work remains, and a non-conference SOS of #296 is terrible and often a number the committee likes to expose. Considering those numbers I believe Clemson needs 11-7 in conference play which would be a 5-2 close from where they stand today because they have records of just 1-2/1-4/3-6. Believe it or not a 5-2 close isn’t out of the question considering Clemson will play 5 of their last 7 at home, the two road games are Georgia Tech & Wake Forest, and they will just face 2 of the top 5 teams in the conference (bookending their close hosting UVA and Pitt in the finale). Don’t close them out just yet as the chances will be there, but the question remains – are they good enough to take advantage? I do not believe so.

Atlantic Sun: Mercer

Big 12: Kansas

Looking Good: Texas, Iowa State, Kansas State, Oklahoma

Need Wins: Oklahoma State (16-8/4-7) – the Cowboys have absolutely fallen apart since the calendar turned to 2014 going 4-7 including losing their last 5. Their ratings are down to #36/#21/#28, which are still firmly in bubble category, but falling quickly. Their record breakdown helps sitting at 2-3/3-6/6-7 so far, and they will have plenty of chances in the solid B12 to continue improving those figures. On the bad side is a 2-5 road record, and a 4-7 conference record leaving them tied for 8th. The Boys will be without Marcus Smart in their next two games, and frankly they need to at least win one of those; if they did that, and won their last 5 they would finish the B12 season at 10-8 which may be good enough with a win or two in the B12 Tournament considering their ratings & record splits. But as you can see considering Smart’s suspension, the way the team is currently playing, their current conference record and how strong the B12 is it’s going to be difficult for the Cowboys to make the Big Dance – an amazing feat considering this was a Top 5 team earlier in the season.

Life Support: West Virginia (15-10/7-5) – the Mountaineers have made a move in the last few weeks going 4-1 in their L5 sliding their ratings to #66/#46/#48, which is weak in RPI but within range in BPI & SBPI. Their record splits are 1-4/3-8/4-8 which is solid as far as Top 50 wins go. Even though WVU is now in position to earn an at-large thanks to a fabulous coaching job by Bob Huggins they’re firmly going uphill in a blizzard as their remaining schedule of six includes road trips to Texas, Iowa State and Oklahoma along with hosting Kansas to close their regular season. Currently at 7-5 in B12 play, if they can close 4-2 to finish at 11-7 (which would also then add two likely Top 25 wins to their resume) they would get right into the mix; 3-3 they would be alive but need to probably reach the B12 SF round; anything less they are in trouble.

Baylor (13-9/3-8) – remember despite Baylor posting a current 15-9 mark two of those wins came against non D1 competition so for all intents and purposes they are currently 13-9, not good. In addition the Bears sit at a woeful 3-8 in conference play, which is almost insurmountable to overcome and earn an at-large (even if they got very hot down the stretch) unless they earned the conference’s automatic bid. At an absolute bare minimum Baylor needs to close the regular season 6-1, meaning they are likely to be left off the very next edition as their chances are slim and none. As an FYI their ratings are #53/#57/#20, not solid besides the SBPI.

Big East: Villanova

Looking Good: Creighton

Need Wins: Xavier (17-7/7-4) – I have dropped X down one level to Need Wins as they have gone just 2-3 over their L5, and a couple other Big East teams have gotten hot and are making a run at a bid. It’s tough to forecast how many bids this new Big East will earn, so outside the top 2 (Villanova & Creighton) the other teams should feel concern along with a sense of urgency. Xavier does have a pair of nice non-conference wins over Tennessee & Cincinnati which will greatly help them and the rest of the conference come Selection Sunday. With records of 1-2/2-4/7-5 and ratings of #44/#38/#39 they are well within range for an at-large; a conference mark of 7-4 is solid but with 7 games remaining that could still change a lot. Right now Xavier is in the field, but they must watch their backs with Georgetown & St John’s especially, two teams they play on the road in back to back outings next week.

Life Support: Georgetown (15-9/6-6) – the Hoyas lost 5 straight to close out January but have rebounded nicely winning 4 straight to open February including a great OOC win over Michigan State on a neutral floor. However, the Hoyas ratings stand at just #57/#61/#56 – which is the weakest amongst the trio of Big East bubble teams. They do however have perhaps the best record splits sitting at 2-3/3-5/5-7, and not only have that MSU win but they also beat likely tourney teams VCU & Kansas State on neutral floors earlier in the season. Georgetown clearly has the toughest closing slate of the bubble Big East teams with 4 of 6 coming on the road (including at SJU & NOVA; and a home game vs. Creighton) – which could be both good and bad. I have put them as tops amongst Big East bubble teams since they have the big OOC wins to hang their hat on – something Providence and St John’s lacks.

Providence (16-9/6-6) – these three bubble Big East schools are all so close to each other in just about every metric (including the fact PC is 2-2 vs. SJU & GTOWN) a lot is still to be determined. After winning 5 straight in January the Friars have now lost 4 of their last 5 and have to turn their free-fall around right now to remain in contention. Of their last 6 games only 2 come against teams in contention for a bid; sadly for PC those two are Villanova and at Creighton, tough matchups. Rankings currently stand at #58/#64/#15 and records are 1-3/2-4/6-8 – they are both needing improvement to make a strong case for inclusion.

St. John’s (16-9/6-6) – the Red Storm have been playing solid basketball for most of 2014, but the results have really just started showing. SJU has won 4 straight and 7 of their L8 games, and although they are 7-3 over their L10 those 3 losses have come by a combined 6 points. Sunday’s win over Creighton gives the Johnnies that signature win they desired – now can they handle business against some of the weaker conference teams over their final 6 games to get firmly in the at-large picture? That Creighton win is their only Top 50 win, and records of 1-4/1-5/4-7 leave a lot to be desired. SJU needs at least a 4-2 close (probably even 5-1) to get in the mix come early March, possible but how probable is the question. For comparative purposes their rankings stand at #60/#48/#53, worse than Providence in 2 of the 3.

Big Sky: Weber State

Big South: Winthrop

Big Ten: Michigan State

Looking Good: Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio State, Iowa

Need Wins: Minnesota (15-9/5-7) – the Gophers have dropped recently, just as was my concern because we have seen this tune play out often over the last few seasons (keep in mind their record vs. D1 opponents is 15-9, one less win than what you may see elsewhere on television). They currently have solid ratings of #38/#41/#25 but have lost 4 of their last 5. The Gophers have a decent record split of 2-4/3-5/5-8 as far as wins go by category, but are just a miserable 2-7 on road/neutral courts this season. OOC losses to Arkansas & Nebraska will not do them any favors, nor will closing their season with 3 of 5 on the road. Since the Big Ten is very likely the top conference in the country simply reaching 9-9 should be enough (along with 1 B10 tourney win), which means a 4-2 close – no lock for certain. If they can sweep their 3 home games vs. Illinois, Iowa & Penn State, just needing one win from their three road games (2 of which come against locks to be dancing) will be critical – if they drop any of their home contests the fight to earn that at-large gets a lot tougher.

Big West: UC-Santa Barbara

Colonial: Delaware

Conference USA: Southern Mississippi

If SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI does not win their conference tournament they would still BE ALIVE to earn an at-large bid – they would need to reach the CUSA Tournament Final to have any chance.

Horizon: Green Bay

Ivy: Harvard

MAAC: Iona

MAC: Toledo

If TOLEDO does not win their conference tournament they would still BE ALIVE to earn an at-large bid – they would need to reach the MAC Tournament Final to have any chance.

MEAC: North Carolina Central

Missouri Valley: Wichita State

If WICHITA STATE does not win their conference tournament they would still RECEIVE a bid, thus taking a spot away from the at-large field.

Mountain West: San Diego State

Need Wins: New Mexico (18-5/9-2) – the Lobos remain close to the Looking Good category but I am not yet ready to slide them up a level following their loss at Boise State. Their ratings are solid for the most part checking in at #35/#43/#72 – they rate much lower in the SBPI because of a bad defense. On the good side is a very solid 9-3 road/neutral record, which by itself is almost enough to earn a bid. Record splits of 1-2/1-2/6-4 is OK but lacks big name wins; beating San Diego State in one of their two upcoming meetings would really set up the Lobos nicely. Expect NM to slide up into the Looking Good category in the near future.

Life Support: Boise State (14-9/6-6) – the Broncos picked up a huge win taking down New Mexico at home by 1pt, good for their first Top 100 win of the season (since then Utah has slipped into the Top 100 giving them two)! Also keep in mind BSU has two non D1 wins so their true record is the 14-9 I list here. Ratings of #59/#50/#31 are mostly outside typical bubble status, as are record splits of 0-4/1-5/2-7. Currently sitting at 6-6 in conference play a close of at least 5-1 is necessary, and frankly unlikely.

Northeast: Bryant

Ohio Valley: Belmont

Pac 12: Arizona

Looking Good: UCLA

Need Wins: Colorado (18-7/7-5) – the Buffaloes had struggled immediately following the loss of their star G Spencer Dinwiddie and have struggled on the road in conference playing losing their last four. The Buffaloes currently lead this huge group of bubble contenders in the Pac 12 because they are ahead of fellow bubble teams in most critical categories. Their ratings currently sit at #25/#45/#38, which are solid; their record splits are 1-3/2-5/9-7, also better than average for the typical bubble team. A 3-6 road/neutral record leaves a little to be desired, but as long as CU keeps winning games they will earn their bid – but this will be a tough team to judge come Selection Sunday.

Arizona State (18-6/7-4) – ASU is tied record wise with Colorado as they have won 5 of 6 and burst right into the main mix of at-large teams; but like every other season it seems there is A LOT to be decided in this conference over the final month of regular season play. The magic # as far as conference wins is measured on the recent past seems to be 11 – post an 11-7 or better mark in conference play, win your first P12 tournament game and you will earn a bid. The Sun Devils have the ratings #37/#32/#43 & record splits 1-3/3-4/6-5 to make that ring true again with a 4-3 close to their conference slate. I think they will get that done.

California (16-8/7-4) – the Golden Bears are virtually locked up with Stanford for the 3rd bubble spot in the Pac 12. I gave the edge to Cal this time around based on a better conference record, but these two teams are nearly identical in most metrics (as mentioned above all these P12 teams are so close). Cal is just 2-4 in their L6 but one of those wins was over #1 Arizona; the other was a narrow OT win at Washington State, cause for concern. Obviously beating the Wildcats gives the Bears that signature win; now they must win enough conference games to earn a bid – and like ASU that means a 4-3 close – that is certainly not a lock and will be difficult to achieve examining those final 7 games on the schedule.

Stanford (15-8/6-5) – the Cardinal will close with the same schedule as Cal (which isn’t an easy one), but with a current 6-5 mark they appear to need a 5-2 finish which will be extremely difficult to achieve. Stanford also doesn’t have that big win over Arizona like California does making their next matchup with the Wildcats critical. Right now it seems the P12 will earn 5 bids with that final 5th bid coming down to Cal, Stanford and possibly Oregon.

Life Support: Oregon (15-8/3-8) – the Ducks started off the season very hot at 13-0 but now sits at 15-8 after losing 8 of 10 since conference play began. Although some of their metrics are within at-large range the biggest issue facing the Ducks is a conference record that sits at just 3-8; if they closed the year winning their last 7 they would be 10-8 in P12 play – meaning more wins would be needed in the P12 Tournament. After such a great start to their season it appears the Ducks will be left off the next edition, and will need to win the P12 automatic bid to be dancing.

Patriot: Boston University

SEC: Florida

Looking Good: Kentucky

Need Wins: Missouri (17-7/5-6) – the Tigers were close to moving up to Looking Good as their ratings are mostly good at #43/#30/#77. They bounced back from a 3 game losing streak by beating Arkansas at home narrowly, sliding them up to 5-6 in conference play. They have now faced just three Top 50 teams all season (winning just one over UCLA very early in the season) leading to a non-conference SOS of #119; combined that with a sub .500 record in SEC play they are very much behind the 8 ball as far as earning an at-large berth goes. All that being said Mizzou closes with 4 of 7 at home, and their three road games come against Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee – very manageable. Remember I project what I think the tournament will look like come Selection Sunday, not what teams have accomplished to this point in the season – and with that in mind I firmly believe Missouri will earn a spot.

Tennessee (14-9/6-5) – the Vols (who lose one non D1 win leaving them at 14-9 currently) have ratings of #50/#42/#8, leaving them in the bubble range besides the SBPI which shows them as a solid club. UT has very nice OOC wins over Xavier & Virginia, but they have lost to Florida twice and Kentucky once in conference play (they do not play UK again in regular season). For both the Vols and the Tigers listed above their home and home series will be critical – Saturday in Columbia & closing Saturday in Knoxville; if either team is able to pull off the sweep the other team’s chances will be dramatically impacted. When all is said & done I feel the SEC will be a four bid league with an outside shot at a 5th, so the Vols are in the driver’s seat but must keep winning.

Life Support: Ole Miss (16-8/7-4) – the Rebels have the best conference mark of the SEC bubble boys, yet their ratings of #61/#60/#84 leave a lot to be desired as far as their at-large chances go. The Rebels are also just 0-1 vs. Top 25 teams, and have the least amount of wins vs. Top 25/50/100 of all SEC bubble teams – not good. Ole Miss’ schedule is not brutal to close as they do face Kentucky & Florida at home – two solid chances to pick up a signature win, and there isn’t a game they will face a huge spread as an underdog. The Rebels will likely be one of the last four teams in or out of the dance come Selections Sunday, and they may be watching for conference tourney upsets in smaller conferences which will impact their chances. They need a signature win or two down the stretch badly.

LSU (15-8/6-5) – the Tigers ratings have slipped since our last update all the way down to #65/#63/#92, placing their at-large hopes in danger. The Tigers have lost 4 straight on the road in conference play (3 of the 4 against non-tourney teams), and must get their defense figured out before their chances for a special season go right down the tubes. LSU has nice wins over Kentucky, Missouri and St. Joseph’s to hang their hats on, but a home loss to Rhode Island may loom large come Selection Sunday. A very tough closing slate that includes four road games at Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky and Vanderbilt will likely determine their fate – pick up 2 wins and they are in the mix; anything less and it will be tough.

Arkansas (15-9/4-7) – the Razorbacks are a funky team as far as the metrics go, and barely remain included here following their 1pt loss at Missouri. Their ratings offer wide variety as their RPI is just #76, yet their BPI of #44 & SBPI #45 are within at-large range. Their record splits are also in play at 1-2/3-6/5-8, but a road/neutral record of 3-7 is certain cause for concern. With a current 4-7 mark in conference play they will need at least a 6-1 close to their season, which seems highly unlikely even if they had an easy close to conference play – which they do not. I expect Arkansas to drop off my next edition.

Southern: Davidson

Southland: Stephen F. Austin

SWAC: Southern

Summit: North Dakota State

Sun Belt: Georgia State

West Coast: Gonzaga

If GONZAGA does not win their conference tournament they would still RECEIVE a bid, thus taking one away from the current at-large pool.

Life Support: BYU (16-10/9-5) – the Cougars (who lose one non D1 win leaving them at 16-10 currently) are #49/#51/#47, now ahead of the Gaels in the ratings this week. They have faced the 5th toughest non-conference SOS, which will likely help their cause should their resume be compared to someone else’s come Selection Sunday. Records of 1-4/2-5/6-7 is pretty solid, and because of that the Cougars will be battling the Gaels down the stretch for a possible second bid for the WCC. As far as the WCC regular season goes it would appear that either BYU or St. Mary’s would need to reach 14-4 in conference play to make a strong case for at-large – that means St. Mary’s is only chance to accomplish that feat. With that in mind it seems unlikely either of the two can secure or even put themselves in solid position to earn a bid before the WCC Tournament; if either can finish 13-5 in conference play AND reach the WCCT Final they will be in the mix.

St. Mary’s (18-7/9-4) – this isn’t a typical St. Mary’s squad (who like BYU lose one non D1 win leaving them at 18-7 currently) as their ratings are just #52/#53/#46, and they only have 1 win over a Top 50 team. See BYU’s comments as these teams will be battling each other for any chance at earning an at-large bid; if a team other than Gonzaga, BYU or St Mary’s was to win the WCC Tournament neither BYU or St Mary’s would have much of a shot at getting a bid.

WAC: New Mexico State

Tournament Breakdown

FIELD: 68

AUTOMATIC BIDS: 32 (up from 31 due to new American Athletic Conference)

Looking Good: 20

Currently I project 52 of the 68 bids are earned.

NEED WINS: 14

LIFE SUPPORT: 16

That leaves 30 teams that are in the mix for 16 open bids.

Keep in mind however that DOES NOT include the upsets we will see during Conference Tournament week where teams that are LOCKS from smaller conferences lose a game in their conference tournament and hence use an at-large bid on themselves.

For the remaining 16 open bids I see them breaking down into two buckets – the first bucket is teams that are likely to earn a bid (10 teams), and the second bucket is the remaining 20 teams who which 6 will earn a bid – also remembering my point above that this all assumes no conference tournament upsets which is highly unlikely to occur. The most likely scenario is about 3 of these 20 teams wind up earning a bid.

First Bucket (10 teams whose chances of earning a bid are significantly higher than the second bucket teams, but these are not “locks” yet) – alphabetical order:

Arizona State
Colorado
Minnesota
Missouri
New Mexico
North Carolina
Oklahoma State
SMU
Tennessee
Xavier

LAST SIX IN (of the 20 remaining teams I have in my summary the final 6 bids, which is extremely tough to decipher at this point in the season) – alphabetical order:

California
Georgetown
Providence
St. John’s
Stanford
West Virginia

FIRST FIVE OUT – alphabetical order:

Boise State
BYU
Florida State
Ole Miss
Richmond

Multiple bid conferences (total of 45 bids in 9 conferences; 23 single bid conferences = 68 bids):

Pac-12 (6)
Big 10 (6)
Big East(6)
ACC (5)
American (5)
SEC (4)
Atlantic 10 (4)

Saturday's Tip Sheet

February 14, 2014

The NBA All-Star break is this weekend and the NHL is in the middle of a two-week hiatus for the Winter Olympics, so men’s college basketball should have the betting public’s full attention this Saturday. Lucky for them there are a number of intriguing matchups on the schedule starting with No. 20 Memphis on the road against No. 24 Connecticut in a high noon clash in the AAC.

No. 20 Memphis Tigers at No. 24 Connecticut Huskies (ESPN, 12:00 p.m. ET)

There is a logjam in the AAC at this point of the season with half the teams in the conference ranked in the Top 25. The Tigers are right in the thick of things with an 8-3 straight-up record and they are 19-5 overall. They have been busy the past few days starting with last Saturday’s 60-54 nonconference victory over then-No. 23 Gonzaga as four-point home favorites followed by a tight 76-70 win against Central Florida as 13 ½-point favorites at home on Wednesday night.

Memphis has gone 5-2 against the spread in its last seven games to improve to 13-8 ATS on the year. It is a profitable 8-2 ATS on the road this season and the total has stayed UNDER in three of its last four road games.
The Tigers have relied heavily on an offense that is averaging 79.7 points a game and shooting 48.1 percent from the field to help cover up some issues with a defense that has allowed 68.7 PPG to its opponents.

Earlier this month, they tagged Rutgers with 101 points in a 32-point romp but this was after giving up 87 points to SMU in a 15-point loss in their previous outing. The duo of Joe Jackson and Shaq Goodwin has done most of the damage with a combined 28.1 points a game.

Connecticut shocked the Tigers in mid-January with an 83-73 victory in the first meeting this season as a seven-point road underdog. Since that point, the Huskies have lost to Louisville and Cincinnati in their only other two games against a ranked opponent as part of an overall SU record of 7-4 in conference play. Despite this up and down play on the court, Connecticut has been one of the most profitable plays in the AAC lately with an 8-1 record ATS in its last nine contests.

Overall, the Huskies are 19-5 SU with a 13-9 record ATS. They have covered in eight of 12 home games this season and the total has stayed UNDER in eight of 11 games at home with a posted line. The total has now stayed UNDER in their last four contests.

Shabazz Napier and DeAndre Daniels have been the big two for Connecticut this season with a combined 30.8 points and 11.4 rebounds a game. The team is averaging 75.6 PPG while shooting 46.5 percent from the field. It has picked things up a notch or two in its last two games by outscoring Central Florida and South Florida by a combined 63 points. The Huskies have done a good job on the other end of the court as well by holding teams to an average of 63.4 PPG. They have played even better defense at home with this average dropping to 59.2 PPG.

Connecticut opened as a 3 ½-point home favorite to pull-off the season sweep over the Tigers on Saturday.

Other than this year’s first tilt, the only other time these two met in recent memory was Memphis’s 81-70 victory in the 2007-08 season as a 7 ½-point home favorite.

Bonus Games

No. 17 Virginia Cavaliers at Clemson Tigers (ESPN, 12:00 p.m. ET)

The Cavaliers have been rolling along with eight-straight victories since a four-point loss to Duke on Jan. 13. This run includes wins over North Carolina and Pittsburgh both SU and ATS. They are now just one game in back of Syracuse in the ACC standings at 11-1 SU and they are 20-5 SU overall.

Virginia has covered in its last six road games and it is 10-2 ATS in its last 12 matchups in the ACC. Despite this impressive run both SU and ATS, there has to be some genuine concern heading into this Saturday’s game as a 3 ½-point road favorite. The Cavaliers have gone 2-5 ATS in the last seven meetings and they have failed to cover in their last four trips to Clemson.

The total has stayed UNDER in five of the last seven meetings.

No. 16 Iowa Hawkeyes at Penn State Nittany Lions (ESPNU, 1:00 p.m.)

Iowa trails both Michigan State and Michigan in the Big Ten standings by two games with a SU conference record of 7-4. After losing to both of these teams as part of a 2-3 SU slide, the Hawkeyes served notice that they are still a factor in the Big Ten regular season title race by hammering the Wolverines 85-67 this past Saturday as 5 ½-point home favorites.

The big question for this game is can Iowa maintain the momentum from that victory or does it suffer a letdown as a 7 ½-point road favorite? Recent betting trends suggest the latter when you consider that the home team in this matchup is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings. Making matters worse is the fact that the Hawkeyes are just 1-4 ATS in the last five meetings and 2-5 ATS in their last seven road games against Penn State.

Florida at Kentucky

February 14, 2014

Florida can make the SEC regular-season race a landslide if it can go into Rupp Arena and win Saturday night for the first time since 2007. Billy Donovan's team travels to Kentucky with a two-game lead over the Wildcats in the league standings.

Most betting shops opened Kentucky (19-5 straight up, 11-9-2 against the spread) as a 2.5-point home favorite.

While a Florida (22-2 SU, 10-9-1 ATS) victory would basically end the SEC race, a win by Kentucky would allow it to control its own destiny to capture yet another conference title.

John Calipari's team is unbeaten in 14 home games with an 8-4 spread record. As for UF, it has won six of its eight true road games while posting a 4-3 spread record.

Kentucky has only been a single-digit home favorite once, failing to cover in a win over Tennessee.

Florida has been an underdog three times this year, going 1-2 SU and 2-1 ATS. The Gators won outright at Arkansas as 3.5-point underdogs, lost on a buzzer-beater but covered at UConn and dropped a 59-53 decision at Wisconsin as 5.5-point road 'dogs.

We should add that this is the first underdog situation for Florida with its entire roster healthy and eligible. In the loss at Wisconsin, Dorian Finney-Smith, Scottie Wilbekin and Chris Walker were out. Kasey Hill was out against the Huskies and Wilbekin was injured in the second half and couldn't play at crunch time.

Walker hasn't been getting much playing time in his first three games. The McDonald's All-American out of Bonifay has played just 16 minutes. Walker has scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots. He has made 4-of-5 shot attempts from the field.

UF has won 16 in a row and hasn't tasted defeat since a Dec. 2 loss at UConn. The Gators are coming off a solid road win Tuesday over Tennessee.

Florida beat the Volunteers by 26 in Gainesville a few weeks ago, but it was a different story at Thompson-Boling Arena. UT led by one at intermission and trailed by just a point with 4:32 remaining.

But Michael Frazier II and Scottie Wilbekin drained back-to-back 3's to stretch the lead to seven and UF pulled away for a 67-58 win as a two-point road 'chalk.' Wilbekin finished with 21 points, six assists and four steals. Frazier finished with 11 points, while Casey Prather had nine points and eight rebounds.

Since losing at LSU on Jan. 28, Kentucky has won four consecutive games while compiling a 3-1 spread record. The Wildcats won 64-56 Wednesday at Auburn, hooking up their backers as 7.5-point road favorites.

Andrew Harrison led the way against the Tigers with 16 points. Julius Randle added 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Randle is UK's go-to guy on a team that consists mainly of freshmen and sophomores. He is averaging 15.8 points and 9.8 rebounds per game.

Randle has a size and strength advantage over just about all defenders that go against him, but that won't be the case with Patric Young. In fact, Young will have the advantage in the muscle department.

From the fourth row behind the Kansas bench at the The O-Dome in December, I saw first-hand how Young's muscle rendered KU's Joel Embiid completely ineffective.

Florida likes to play a lot of zone and I'm sure that'll be the case Saturday night. Kentucky struggles from the perimeter, ranking No. 272 in the nation in 3-point percentage (32.2%).

Since Calipari was hired by UK, the 'Cats have won eight of 10 meetings against Florida. The long-time rivals split a pair of regular-season meetings last year, with UK winning a 61-57 decision at home.

The 'under' has cashed in five of the last six head-to-head encounters between these schools and is 8-3 in the last 11.

The 'under' has been a winner in three straight UK games to improve to 12-8-1 overall. The 'under' is 7-3-1 for the 'Cats in their home games.

The 'under' has been a major money maker in Florida games all season. The 'under' is 14-5-1 overall for the Gators, 5-2 in their road assignments.

GameDay will be in Lexington and tip-off on ESPN is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.'s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Michigan State senior center Adreian Payne is back and 100 percent healthy (and lethal) after missing seven games. Payne led the Spartans to Thursday's 85-70 home win over Northwestern by scoring 20 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Payne scored 24 points in last Sunday's loss at Wisconsin. Tom Izzo is happy to have Payne back, but he's now without starting guard Keith Appling, who has a wrist injury that has forced him to miss the first three games of his career. Appling averages 15.0 points and 4.9 assists per game. He continues to get treatment but is probably at least a week away from returning. Branden Dawson remains out (hand) and won't be back for at least two more weeks.

-- Kansas freshman center Joel Embiid is listed as 'questionable' for Saturday's home game vs. TCU, but I'll be very surprised if he plays. Bill Self clearly indicated after Monday's loss at Kansas St. that Embiid needed some rest before the stretch drive. Embiid has been bothered by a sprained knee and an ailing back, and his presence certainly isn't required against the Horned Frogs. Embiid averages 10.7 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocked shots per game. Also, the status of Jamari Taylor is in question after Self benched him at KSU due to an off-the-court issue. Taylor averages 4.2 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.

-- Texas forward Jonathan Holmes (13.1 PPG, 7.5 RPG) is a question mark for Saturday's home game versus West Virginia. Holmes injured his knee in last Saturday's loss at Kansas St. and did not play in a win over Oklahoma St. earlier this week.

-- UMass stud point guard Chaz Williams is questionable Saturday against George Washington due to a hip injury. Williams is the catalyst for the Minutemen, averaging 15.7 points and 7.3 assists per game.

-- I'm wondering if the court at Thompson-Boling is ok after taking that crash landing from Patric Young's body Tuesday night? With UF leading by six at the 1:32 mark, Young missed a shot that went off the rim and bounced toward the sideline. Two Tennessee players were in better position to grab the rebound, but Young wanted it more. The senior center fully extended his 6-foot-9, 240-pound frame to dive at the ball. His momentum was carrying him out of bounds, but he immediately threw the ball to a teammate and the Gators got a fresh 35 seconds. Donovan called it 'the play of the year.'

-- I'll be filing Thursday's finish of Boston College at Ga. Tech as one of my top miracle covers of all-time. At the same time, those backing BC will add it to their list of bad beats. Hopefully those of you on the Eagles got a push, as Ga. Tech was favored by 2.5 early Thursday but eventually moved to three. BC took a one-point lead with 3.4 seconds remaining on a baseline jumper from Olivier Hanlan. Ga. Tech had no timeouts remaining, but it caught a monster break when Steve Donahue inexplicably decided to call a timeout. Why, you ask? Well, of course, to make sure his defense was so prepared for the play the Yellow Jackets now had time to draw up. Donahue did such a good job of prepping his players that they committed the most cardinal sin possible --fouling a 3-point shooter -- in this scenario. Marcus Georges-Hunt buried the trey with 0.7 seconds remaining to put Ga. Tech up by two. In this situation, especially when given the amount of time that was available since the refs had to go to the monitor and review where the clock should've stopped after Georges-Hunt's 3-ball, Ga. Tech head coach Brian Gregory should've advised Georges-Hunt to miss the free throw on purpose. As long as he hit the rim, this would've resulted in BC having to attempt a heave from 80-plus feet. This is an absolute no-brainer coaching move, but Gregory and his staff fell asleep at the wheel. Therefore, when Georges-Hunt made the free throw, Ga. Tech backers were able to cash the miracle winner. Also, BC had a decent look at a potential tying 3-pointer at the buzzer, but it was off the mark. I'm glad it didn't go in, but it sure would've been fitting because Donahue and Gregory both did an abysmal job of handling the clock and their timeouts at crunch time of this scrub game that I'll never forget.

Armadillo: Saturday's List of 13: Waiting to get plowed to freedom......

13) NFL commish Roger Goodell banked $35.1M in salary this past year, and another $9.1M in deferred compensation. Pretty good year-- hopefully at some point he'll do something to improve the quality of the NFL's product, which has slipped due to his all-out effort to settle/avoid lawsuits.

12) Don't want to hear the "player safety" argument; if the NFL truly cared about player safety, they wouldn't play Thursday night games four days after Sunday games. Football was meant to be played once a week.

11) Sports Illustrated writer Bruce Feldman wrote an excellent book about college football recruiting called Meat Market, which dealt with the Ole Miss program when Ed Orgeron was coach. Now Feldman has a book coming out about how quarterbacks are developed, coming out later this year. He is an excellent writer, so the book should be educational.

10) RIP Jim Fregosi, who passed away this week at age 71 after having a stroke while on a cruise. Fregosi played big league ball for 18 years, managed for another 15, leading the Phillies to the '93 World Series.

In New York though, Fregosi is best-known for being the guy the Mets got when they traded Nolan Ryan to the Angels- not the Mets' finest moment.

Lot of tributes for Fregosi on Twitter Friday; he was a beloved figure who was famous for telling great stories and being a good guy. He'll be missed.

9) Five of the teams in the Atlantic 13 are in the top 25. Not bad.

8) Oakland 83, Detroit 82 ot-- Teams are 25 miles apart, its a good rivalry developing in the Horizon League, which needs more TV exposure. Travis Bader was 8-13 from the arc, had 30 for Oakland-- he's made the most 3's of anyone in Division I history. this was a fun game to watch.

7) Arizona 69, Arizona 66 2ot-- Another tremendous game, with ASU needing this game lot more than the Wildcats. Weird ending in second OT, as Jahii Carson hung on the rim after a breakaway dunk with 0:00.7 left, but was spared by the officials, as were ASU fans, who stormed the court early, after a kid had thrown stuff on the court earlier in the game.

Arizona's Aaron Gordon is a good freshman player, but he is 12 for his last 39 on the foul line. Not good- he was 3 for 8 in this game.

6) Eric Musselman is an assistant coach at Arizona State-- his dad Bill was a terrific coach in college/pros- he was the Timberwolves' first coach. In their first two years, Minnesota had four players and two assistant coaches who later became NBA head coaches. Thats quite a coaching tree.

5) Pro golfer Fred Funk does a commercial for Mitsubishi Electronics that is pretty funny; you wouldn't even know he isn't an actor.

4) NBA is wisely going to centralized replay next year; the NHL already has it, and MLB/NFL should follow. Its the best way to do replay.

3) UConn-Temple got bumped off ESPN Thursday night so they can show the re-scheduled UNC-Duke game at 9:00.

2) Check out this article on NBA.com about our friend Nevada Smith, who is a coach in the D-League. Lot of life lessons involved here, number one being you should always be prepared when opportunity knocks, because you never know who is watching.

Coach Smith was well-prepared and is now living out his dream, going from a Division III college coach to coaching pros. Tremendous story.

1) Further sign of the softening of America; we've had a snowstorm here in upstate New York the last 36 hours. There is a guy who is paid to plow out the bottom of my driveway, but he is among the missing as I type this, eliminating the possibility of me ordering out for food, since the Domino's guy isn't climbing the two-foot mountain of snow that is still there.

I was going to complain more, but just heard that they had an earthquake in South Carolina tonight, the same week that they had a snowstorm. Oy.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saturday's Top 25 NCAAB cheat sheet: Early games
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Virginia Cavaliers at Clemson Tigers (+4.5)

The conference championship very well could come down to Virginia's showdown with the visiting Syracuse Orange on March 1. But the Cavaliers have made it known they aren't looking past anyone - putting together its best start in conference play since opening 12-1 in 1981-82. Virginia guard Malcolm Brogdon has scored in double digits in 12 consecutive games.

K.J. McDaniels has been the lone offensive star on a Clemson squad that has struggled to score all season. He's the only player on the team to average double digits in points (17) and also leads the club in rebounding (7.5), steals (1.1) and blocks. The Tigers shoot just 41.1 percent from the field and 31.3 percent from beyond the arc but limit opponents to 38.2 percent from the floor.

TRENDS

* Cavaliers are 6-0 ATS in their last six road games.
* Tigers are 7-0 ATS in their last seven Saturday games.
* Under is 5-1 in Virginia's last six games.
* Home team is 7-1 ATS in the last eight meetings.

Memphis Tigers at Connecticut Huskies (-5)

Named to the Wooden Award midseason list, Memphis' Joe Jackson leads the conference with an average of two steals while also remaining atop the club in points (14.6), assists (4.5) and minutes (32). While the senior guard's presence is felt in every contest, freshman reserve forward Dominic Woodson will sit out as he serves a one-game suspension for inappropriate language.

The Huskies' Shabazz Napier also was named to the Wooden Award midseason list, which consists of the top 30 players in the nation. The guard leads the conference in assists (5.5) while also topping his own team in points (17.3) and rebounds (5.9). Guard Ryan Boatright is dealing with an admittedly injured shoulder but sits one point shy of reaching 1,000 for his career.

TRENDS

* Tigers are 10-1 ATS in their last 11 games following an ATS win.
* Huskies are 6-0 ATS in their last six games.
* Under is 10-4 in Memphis' last 14 road games.
* Over is 19-9-1 in Connecticut's last 29 games following a win of more than 20 points.

Pittsburgh Panthers at North Carolina Tar Heels (-3.5)

Even though they went to both overtime and double-overtime in their last five contests, the Panthers only are averaging 57.4 points during that stretch. Talib Zanna broke out of a slump with 16 points and 14 rebounds against Syracuse, but Patterson - the team's leading scorer at 17 points - continued to struggle from the field. Patterson is shooting just 28.5 percent over the last five games.

The Tar Heels have been remarkably consistent during their five-game winning streak, as they've scored between 73 and 84 points in each game while allowing between 61 and 70. Of course, Wednesday's postponement means North Carolina has not played in a week since posting a 73-62 road win over Notre Dame. James Michael McAdoo led the team with 18 points in that contest.

TRENDS

* Panthers are 0-5 ATS in their last five games.
* Tar Heels are 5-0 ATS in their last five games.
* Under is 4-0 in Pittsburgh's last four games.
* Over is 5-2 in North Carolina's last seven games.

Iowa Hawkeyes at Penn State Nittany Lions (+7)

The Hawkeyes, who have alternated wins and losses in the last six games, are third in the standings with trips to Indiana, Minnesota and Michigan State on the horizon - along with a home game versus Wisconsin. Devyn Marble made six 3-pointers in last weekend's win against Michigan and averages 16.5 points to lead the team. Aaron White is the only other player averaging in double figures (13.2)

The Nittany Lions forced 20 turnovers in Wednesday's victory at Indiana, where they finished the game with a 15-2 run and denied the Hoosiers a field goal over the final five minutes. D.J. Newbill, who averaged 23 points in two games against Iowa last season, leads Penn State in scoring (17.2) and Frazier is next (16.1) while topping the Big Ten with six assists per game.

TRENDS

* Hawkeyes are 19-7 ATS in their last 26 Saturday games.
* Nittany Lions are 4-10 ATS in their last 14 games.
* Over is 9-2 in Iowa's last 11 games following an ATS win.
* Home team is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings.

Texas Tech Red Raiders at Iowa State Cyclones (-10)

The Red Raiders scored 30 points in the paint Monday and are averaging 35.4, ahead of the school-record pace set in 1995-96 (34.3). Texas Tech’s ability to score inside has overshadowed its woes from the 3-point line during its three-game winning streak, during which time the Red Raiders are shooting 23 percent beyond the arc. Jaye Crockett leads the team in scoring at 14.5 points per game.

The Cyclones remained the only team in Division I to score at least 70 points in every contest, but little else went right two days after conference player of the year candidate Melvin Ejim exploded for a Big 12-record 48 points against Texas Christian. Ejim managed only six points in a game coach Fred Hoiberg called “the worst effort we have had by far this season”.

TRENDS

* Red Raiders are 5-0 ATS in their last five road games.
* Cyclones are 1-8 ATS in their last nine games.
* Under is 7-0 in Texas Tech's last seven Saturday games.
* Favorite is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

Oklahoma Sooners at Oklahoma State Cowboys (-2.5)

Buddy Hield leads the fourth-place Sooners with 16.4 points but was held to single-digits for just the second time this season. Ryan Spangler adds 10.4 points and 9.8 rebounds after being held to five points and four rebounds. Cameron Clark has back-to-back 16 point games, hitting 13-of-16 shots during that span, and averages 15.8 points.

Markel Brown averages 16.7 points and Phil Forte adds 12.2 points after scoring eight in his first start. Le'Bryan Nash, who adds 14.8 points and a team-high 5.9 rebounds, has shot 50 percent or better in his last six games and is averaging 19.5 points during that span. Kamari Murphy averages 6.1 points and 5.8 rebounds after his first double-double of the year.

TRENDS

* Sooners are 6-0 in their last six games following an ATS loss.
* Cowboys are 1-6 ATS in their last seven Saturday games.
* Under is 4-1 in Oklahoma's last five road games.
* Over is 6-0 in the last six meetings in Stillwater.

VCU Rams at Saint Louis Billikens (-4.5)

The Rams feature three double-digit scorers in guard Treveon Graham (15.6 points, 6.9 rebounds), forward Juvonte Reddic (12.4 points, 8.3 rebounds) and guard Melvin Johnson (10.7). Guard Rob Brandenberg (9.4) had failed to reach double digits in five of six games – including back-to-back 3-point outings – before breaking out with 15 points in the victory over George Washington.

The Billikens allow just 58.8 points per game and limit opponents to 39 percent shooting from the field but also possess two potent offensive players in forward Dwayne Evans (14.5 points, 6.3 rebounds) and point guard Jordair Jett (13.2 points, 4.9 assists). Jett scored 19 of his 25 points in the second half against La Salle and ranks fifth in school history with 375 career assists.

TRENDS

* Rams are 6-14 ATS in their last 20 road games.
* Billikens are 5-0 ATS in their last five games following an ATS loss.
* Under is 7-1 in Saint Louis' last eight Saturday games.
* Favorite is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.

Houston Cougars at Cincinnati Bearcats (-15)

Cougars forward TaShawn Thomas averages 16.2 points and 8.8 rebounds but has occasionally been passive in games and the coaching staff urged him to be more aggressive against Temple and he responded with 25 points and nine rebounds. Guards Danuel House (12.9) and Jherrod Stiggers (10 per game) also average in double digits.

Cincinnati's Sean Kilpatrick scored 22 points against SMU for his fourth 20-point outing in five games but was just 5-of-18 from the field. The senior guard is averaging 22.9 points over the last eight games and was named to the Naismith Trophy Midseason Top 30 list Thursday. Forward Justin Jackson averages 11.4 points and seven rebounds.

TRENDS

* Cougars are 1-5 ATS in their last six games.
* Bearcats are 8-3 ATS in their last 11 home games.
* Under is 40-11 in Cincinnati's last 51 games.
* Home team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.

N.C. State Wolf Pack at Syracuse Orange (-14)

Since missing a game due to a sprained ankle, Wolf Pack standout T.J. Warren (23.1 points, 7.4 rebounds) has posted an average of 26.4 points and 7.6 boards over his last five contests. Warren has shot 58.4 percent during that stretch, including a 15-of-26 performance en route to a career-high 34 points in Tuesday's 15-point win over Wake Forest.

The 58-56 win over Pittsburgh gave Syracuse its 24th straight victory - a new school record - as the team erased a six-point deficit in the final two minutes. The Orange won despite the absence of center Baye Moussa Keita, a stalwart in the middle of Jim Boeheim's 2-3 zone defense, and the senior's status is up in the air for Saturday.

TRENDS

* Wolfpack are 3-12-1 ATS in their last 16 Saturday games.
* Orange are 7-2-1 ATS in their last 10 games following a win.
* Over is 4-1 in N.C. State's last five games.
* Road team is 4-0 ATS in the last four meetings.

Saturday's Top 25 NCAAB cheat sheet: Late games
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TCU Horned Frogs at Kansas Jayhawks (-24)

Kyan Anderson continues to be the bright spot in the Horned Frogs' struggling offense, averaging a team-high 16.3 points after scoring at least 20 points in four of his last six games. Amric Fields has scored in double figures in 13 of his 16 appearances and averages 13.6 points and 6.1 rebounds. The Horned Frogs are ranked last in the Big 12 in scoring, field-goal percentage and rebounding.

Freshman Andrew Wiggins leads the first-place Jayhawks with 16 points and Perry Ellis adds 13.2 points and 6.8 rebounds. Ellis has had two double-doubles in the past three games for Kansas, which is 9-2 at home. Joel Embiid averages 10.7 points, a team-high 7.8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in 22.3 minutes but has been limited to 7.5 points in 17.3 minutes the past three games.

TRENDS

* Horned Frogs are 7-20 ATS in their last 27 games vs. Big 12 opponents.
* Jayhawks are 5-0 ATS in their last five games vs. teams with losing records.
* Under is 4-0 in TCU's last four games following an ATS loss.
* Over is 8-0 in Kansas' last eight Saturday games.

Maryland Terrapins at Duke Blue Devils (-13.5)

The Terrapins put up a fight before fading in the second half of a 61-53 loss at Virginia on Monday, two days after putting up 83 points on one of the best defensive teams in the ACC in a win over Florida State. Seth Allen went for a career-high 32 points in the victory over the Seminoles and had 15 against the Cavaliers on 7-of-14 shooting.

The Blue Devils know a few things about getting hot from 3-point range and lead the ACC with a 3-point field-goal percentage of 42. Duke went 11-of-21 from beyond the arc in last Saturday’s 89-68 win at Boston College but freshman Jabari Parker did not need any 3-pointers to post season highs of 29 points and 16 rebounds. Parker has 21 or more points in three of the last four contests.

TRENDS

* Terrapins are 8-2 ATS in their last 10 Saturday games.
* Blue Devils are 7-0 ATS in their last seven games.
* Under is 4-0 in Maryland's last four road games.
* Favorite is 5-2 ATS in the last seven meetings.

West Virginia Mountaineers at Texas Longhorns (-6)

West Virginia's Juwan Staten scored 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting but the rest of the team struggled to 30.9 percent shooting in the loss to Texas, with Terry Henderson and Eron Harris combining to go 1-of-13 from 3-point range. Staten’s 19 points against Iowa State snapped a string of three straight games reaching at least 20. He had 23 in the first meeting with Texas.

The Longhorns were missing leading scorer Jonathan Holmes on Tuesday but Javan Felix picked up the slack with 27 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. The sophomore guard was 6-of-24 from 3-point range over his previous five games but got help from a sagging defense and confidence from his teammates. Texas suffered a 57-53 overtime loss at home to West Virginia last season.

TRENDS

* Mountaineers are 6-1 ATS in their last seven games following a win.
* Longhorns are 4-9-1 ATS in their last 14 Saturday games.
* Over is 4-0 in West Virginia's last four games.
* Over is 13-6 in Texas' last 19 games vs. the Big 12.

Ohio State Buckeyes at Illinois Fighting Illini (+4.5)

The Buckeyes allowed 70 or more points for only the fourth time this season against Michigan to stall their momentumt. Ross leads the team in scoring (14.6), followed by Lenzell Smith Jr. (12) while point guard Aaron Craft stirs the pot for the Ohio State, averaging 9.3 points, 4.7 assists and 2.5 steals. Ohio State C Amir Williams leads the league in field goal percentage at 61.8 and paces the Buckeyes in rebounding (6.2).

Guard Rayvonte Rice has been a bright spot during a rough stretch for the Fighting Illini, reaching 20 points in three of the last five games while leading the team in scoring (16.8) and rebounding (six) at 6-4. Illinois’ only win during its slump came Feb. 9 at Penn State, but followed that up with a 67-58 loss at Nebraska on Wednesday. Joseph Bertrand, 2-of-8 shooting the last two games, had 19 points against Ohio State

TRENDS

* Buckeyes are 6-2 ATS in their last eight road games.
* Fighting Illini are 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games.
* Under is 7-1 in Ohio State's last eight games following an ATS loss.
* Home team is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings.

Loyola Marymount Lions at Gonzaga Bulldogs (-17.5)

The Lions opened West Coast Conference play with consecutive victories but have since dropped 11 of 12, including a 10-point decision to the visiting Bulldogs on Jan. 18. Anthony Ireland leads the team in points (18.4) and assists (5.5) but is just 15-for-44 from the field over his last three games and is shooting just over 30 percent from 3-point range for the season.

Gonzaga bounced back nicely from a six-point loss at Memphis, shooting 52.5 percent while placing four players in double figures en route to a 15-point victory over Pepperdine. Junior guard Kevin Pangos paces the team in scoring at 15.1 points per game, but had averaged just 8.3 over a four-game stretch before breaking out with 18 against the Waves.

TRENDS

* Lions are 5-16 ATS in their last 21 games.
* Bulldogs are 5-2 ATS in their last seven home games.
* Under is 9-1 in Loyola Marymount's last 10 games vs. teams with winning records.
* Under is 9-1 in the last 10 meetings.

Air Force Falcons at San Diego State Aztecs (-17.5)

The Falcons held San Jose State to 30.2 percent shooting Wednesday and edged the Spartans 51-48 for their first victory in nearly a month. Leading scorer Tre' Coggins returned to the starting lineup for the first time since serving a three-game suspension and finished with three points on 1-of-12 shooting. Coggins averages 16.8 points while shooting 47.1 percent from the field.

The Aztecs’ dynamic frontcourt has become even stronger in recent weeks with the emergence of forward Dwayne Polee II, who made three 3-pointers and scored 15 points against Wyoming. Polee was one of the few bright spots against the Cowboys, whose zone defense frustrated Thames and forced 13 turnovers. San Diego State has won 10 of the last 12 games against Air Force.

TRENDS

* Falcons are 5-1 ATS in their last six road games.
* Aztecs are 5-2 ATS in their last seven games.
* Under is 13-3 in San Diego State's last 16 home games.
* Home team is 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings.

Florida Gators at Kentucky Wildcats (-2)

Florida enters this game on a 16-game winning streak. Patric Young will move into a tie for eighth for the most games played at Florida (136) when he takes the floor against Kentucky. The Gators will be trying to snap an opponent's home-winning streak of at least 20 games for the second time this season after ending Arkansas’ 25-game streak with an overtime win Jan. 14.

Many expected Willie Cauley-Stein to continue in his starting role after he took over for Noel following his injury last season, but Johnson stole the job in the preseason and the 7-foot Cauley-Stein hasn’t done much to prove he belongs with the starting five. Cauley-Stein has been held to single digits in eight of the last nine games, scoring three points or fewer in five of those contests.

TRENDS

* Wildcats are 5-1 ATS in their last six home games.
* Under is 10-2 in Gators' last 12 Saturday games.
* Under is 4-1-1 in Kentucky's last six Saturday games.
* Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.

NCAA: Five teams that need to impress Saturday
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With time running out in the NCAA basketball regular season, it is another crucial weekend for schools on the bubble looking to impress the tournament selection committee.

We look at the Top 5 games featuring teams that need to impress this Saturday.

Clemson (15-8)

Line: +4.5 at home versus Virginia

With an ACC win over Duke under their belt Clemson have earned their way into the discussion as teams on the bubble, but back-to-back losses to Syracuse and Notre Dame, as well as a recent 19 point defeat to North Carolina, have weakened the Tigers' resume. Hosting No. 16 Virginia, the Tigers could vault their way back into the tournament field with a signature Saturday win at home.

Baylor (15-9)

Line: -4.5 at home versus Kansas State

Baylor has fallen off the map during Big 12 play and has just three wins in their last 10 - two of which came against last place TCU. A team that has the talent to get to the tournament, Baylor desperately needs wins to make a tournament case. They can start by improving their position in the conference standings with a win at home over third place Kansas State.

West Virginia (15-10)

Line: +6 at Texas

West Virginia looks like it was left for dead at the start of Big 12 play, but Bob Huggins has coached up his Mountaineers into a bubble team. Wins over Oklahoma, Kansas State and Iowa State have West Virginia in fifth place in the conference. Winners of four of their last five, Huggins knows that his team could get themselves a massive win should they find away to knock off No. 19 Texas on the road.

Washington (14-11)

Line: +1 at home versus Cal

Coming off a much needed win at home against Stanford to end a three game skid, the Huskies 12-2 record at home will be tested against a tough Cal team. With a swing through Oregon to play the Ducks and Beavers on the horizon, C.J. Wilcox and company could start a streak towards the conference tournament with a win. Holding an unspectacular 14-11 record, they won't get to the tournament without a winning streak before March.

Maryland (14-11)

Line: +13.5 at Duke

Maryland's biggest problem in the ACC this season has been beating the top tier as the Terrapins have beat enough of the bottom feeders in the conference to hold a .500 record. What they need is a win over a Top 25 team and Duke may be the perfect opponent for them. Maryland has won two straight against the Blue Devils and another win over their rivals would definitely be remembered when it comes time to determine who is on the bubble and who is in the field of 64.

Game of the Day: Florida at Kentucky
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Florida Gators at Kentucky Wildcats (-2)

Florida can take a big step toward defending its SEC regular-season title Saturday night when the No. 4 Gators travel to No. 13 Kentucky. Florida heads into the showdown with a two-game lead over the Wildcats with seven games remaining, including a rematch with visiting Kentucky in the regular-season finale March 8. The Gators also remain in position to join the Wildcats as the only teams to finish unbeaten in SEC play.

Kentucky upset the visiting Gators in their last meeting in March, a 61-57 victory that came a month after the Wildcats fell to the host Gators and lost starting center Nerlens Noel to a season-ending knee injury in the process. Florida enters this game on a 16-game winning streak and one of its most valuable players has been point guard Scottie Wilbekin, who won’t light up the stat sheet on the offensive end but is one of the top on-ball defenders in the SEC. Kentucky has won four in a row and can match its longest win streak of the season with another victory

TV:
9 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE HISTORY:
The Wildcats opened as 2-point home faves.

POWER RANKINGS:
Florida (-17.7) - Kentucky (-13.0) + Home Court (-3.0) = Florida -1.7

INJURY WATCH:
Florida - Dillon Graham (Out - hip)

ABOUT FLORIDA (22-2 SU, 10-9-1 ATS, 5-14 O/U):
Patric Young will move into a tie for eighth for the most games played at Florida (136) when he takes the floor against Kentucky. He may have made the hustle play of the year in Tuesday’s win at Tennessee, sprinting for a loose ball under his own basket and diving between two opponents before saving it to a teammate just before sliding out of bounds. The 22-year-old Young should be able to take advantage of his matchup against 7-0 freshman Dakari Johnson, who turned 18 in September.

ABOUT KENTUCKY (19-5 SU, 11-9-2 ATS, 8-12 O/U):
Many expected Willie Cauley-Stein to continue in his starting role after he took over for Noel following his injury last season, but Johnson stole the job in the preseason and the 7-foot Cauley-Stein hasn’t done much to prove he belongs with the starting five. Cauley-Stein has been held to single digits in eight of the last nine games, scoring three points or less in five of those contests. Wednesday’s game against Auburn was typical of his recent play as he finished with five points and six rebounds in 20 minutes.

TRENDS:

* Under is 5-1 in the last six meetings.
* Under is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings in Kentucky.
* Wildcats are 5-1 ATS in their last six home games.
* Under is 8-3 in Gators' last 11 road games.

CONSENSUS:
63 percent of wagers are on Kentucky at -2.
