Preview: Friars (18-6) at Golden Eagles (15-9)
Date: February 10, 2016 7:00 PM EDT

Experiencing another untimely slump, Providence's season is beginning to play out much like the last.

The 20th-ranked Friars hope to change that trend Wednesday night by reversing their dubious history at Marquette, a traditional roadblock on their Big East schedule.

After rising to eighth in the Top 25 off a 14-1 start and later earning a breakthrough overtime win at Villanova on Jan. 24, Providence (18-6, 6-5 Big East) has fallen to the middle of the conference pack by dropping three of four. The Friars have lost two straight for the first time this season after a 72-60 defeat in Saturday's rematch with the current No. 1 Wildcats followed a 77-70 setback at DePaul last Tuesday.

Providence encountered a similar slide last year, splitting its final 10 conference regular-season games after winning six of its first eight.

"It's a long season, but we're still in good shape," coach Ed Cooley said. "It's tough with the way we've played lately. We don't need anybody being negative. It's not the end of the world because we lost a basketball game. It's a journey and you teach and encourage and we'll look to continue to improve.'

Winning at Marquette (15-9, 4-7) would qualify as an upgrade, as Providence is 0-9 all-time on the road in the series with the Golden Eagles winning the last six in Milwaukee by an average of 18.8 points. They also upset the then-No. 8 Friars 65-64 in Providence on Jan. 5 when star freshman Henry Ellenson rejected Kris Dunn's 15-footer at the buzzer for their 12th victory in the schools' last 14 meetings.

The young Golden Eagles have been expectedly inconsistent since, losing three straight in mid-January before winning three in a row. They've struggled defensively in dropping their last two, with Seton Hall shooting 50 percent in a 79-62 victory last Wednesday and then-No. 6 Xavier going 13 of 20 from 3-point range in Saturday's 90-82 win.

Marquette trailed by one with 2:15 left but turned it over on three consecutive possessions as the Musketeers pulled away with a 7-0 run.

'Turnovers have been our Achilles heel all year,' coach Steve Wojciechowski said. 'We have some amazing turnovers at costly times. Against a team like Xavier, there isn't any margin for error. You can't have empty possessions.'

That could be an issue as well against Providence, which leads the Big East with 15.3 takeaways per game and has the conference's reigning defensive player of the year in Dunn, second in Division I in steals (3.18 per game). The junior guard had five as the Friars scored 24 points off 19 Marquette giveaways in last month's matchup.

Providence also tops the conference in 3-point percentage defense (30.8) but has been vulnerable inside, an advantage the bigger Golden Eagles exploited by shooting 62.5 percent inside the arc in the previous meeting. Villanova did as well on Saturday, outscoring the Friars 32-14 in the paint and finishing with a 46-29 rebounding edge.

The Wildcats capitalized on Ben Bentil's ankle injury that held the Big East's scoring leader to two rebounds, though the standout sophomore still managed 20 points in 34 minutes.

"He toughed it out,' Cooley said. 'He hadn't practiced since leaving the floor the other day, but a talent like that is tough to keep off the floor."

Bentil had 28 points and nine rebounds against Marquette last month, but Dunn committed a season-high seven turnovers and the Friars shot 37.7 percent. They've been held under 40 percent in each of their last three losses.

Ellenson compiled 13 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks in the last matchup and is averaging 21.3 points over his last three.

Preview: Bears (17-6) at Wildcats (14-9)
Date: February 10, 2016 8:15 PM EDT

In an attempt to end its first losing streak, Baylor will have to visit a team that already gave it one of its toughest tests this season.

If that wasn't enough, Kansas State is also coming off a stunning upset on its own floor and will try to capture another Wednesday night.

Another poor shooting performance sent No. 21 Baylor to an 80-69 loss at then-No. 14 West Virginia on Saturday. The Bears (17-6, 6-4 Big 12) finished at 38.7 percent after connecting on 12 of 36 attempts in the second half and shot a season-low 35.2 in a 67-59 defeat to visiting Texas on Feb. 1.

"We've been missing a lot of layups in the past two games and against quality teams, you can't miss as many layups and shots as we've missed," coach Scott Drew said. "We just haven't executed at a high enough level. Defensively, we haven't forced the other teams to miss enough shots."

Baylor shot a more respectable 49.1 percent and held Kansas State to 40.6 on Jan. 20, but needed double overtime for a 79-72 victory at home. Taurean Prince scored 19 points and matched a season high with 13 rebounds in the Bears' fourth win in the past five matchups.

Baylor, though, has alternated wins and losses in its last six games at Kansas State. It fell 63-61 as the No. 22 team in the nation in its previous visit Jan. 17, 2015. The Wildcats (14-9, 3-7) pulled off an even bigger upset Saturday with an 80-69 win that knocked Oklahoma out of the No. 1 spot.

"It's tough to play on the road anywhere, but we have to go in there and take care of business," Baylor guard Ishmail Wainright said.

Kansas State, 12-2 at home, lost its first seven games against Top 25 opponents this season but prevailed Saturday behind Wesley Iwundu's 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Coach Bruce Weber changed his starting lineup with freshman guard Barry Brown replacing Justin Edwards and D.J. Johnson replacing Dean Wade.

Wade matched a season high with 17 points while also making 7 of 11 shots, and Kansas State outshot the Sooners 52.9 percent to 43.1. Johnson went 5 of 6 from the floor while scoring 12.

"It wasn't that we didn't believe. We just didn't get it done. ... You have to make it happen," Weber said. "We had chances against North Carolina, West Virginia, Baylor, Texas. We've had chances against a lot of people. We just didn't make it happen and now we did so I hope that will continue.

"We have a lot of opportunities to continue to get Top 25 wins, and that continues with Baylor on Wednesday."

Kansas State freshman guard Kamau Stokes, who scored a team-best 20 points last month at Baylor, is likely out for the season following right knee surgery. Iwundu had 10 points in that game - slightly below his team-high average of 12.8 - but matched a career best with 10 rebounds.

Johnathan Motley had 15 points on 7-of-7 shooting and nine boards off the bench for the Bears. Al Freeman scored all of his 11 points in the two overtimes, and Lester Medford matched a career high with 13 assists.

Prince scored 20 points in the most recent visit to Kansas State and is averaging 17.7 in his past three matchups.

Preview: Golden Hurricane (15-8) at Mustangs (20-2)
Date: February 10, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

SMU's quest for an undefeated season ended a little more than two weeks ago, but coach Larry Brown finally believes his squad is simply playing for itself.

The No. 16 Mustangs can build on their most decisive American Athletic Conference victory by remaining undefeated at home Wednesday night against Tulsa.

After losing two of three and shooting 40.4 percent in the previous two, SMU (20-2, 9-2) shot 60.3 percent - second-highest this season - in Sunday's 92-58 road rout of lowly South Florida.

Though the Mustangs faced little resistance while going 14 of 24 from 3-point range and recording a season-high 27 assists, Brown might have been most pleased with his team's care-free approach.

'Maybe the pressure of everybody talking about how special we were and we had this chance of going undefeated ...' Brown said. 'I never thought about that, to be honest. But I think it might have affected our kids.'

An unbeaten run during a season in which NCAA sanctions prohibit the program from any postseason competition became a hot topic until the Mustangs lost 89-80 at Temple on Jan. 24. Following a 12-point home win over Memphis six days later, SMU fell 71-68 at Houston on Feb. 1.

After getting back on track again, the league-leading Mustangs try to win consecutive games for the first time since starting 18-0. Despite matching a season-low shooting effort against Memphis, SMU has still hit more than half of its attempts while averaging 79.1 points during a 15-game home winning streak that dates to its 62-54 loss to Cincinnati on Feb. 5, 2015.

That run included last season's 67-62 win over Tulsa (15-8, 7-4), which dropped its fourth straight in the series by allowing SMU to shoot 56.4 percent and go 10 of 15 from 3-point range in an 81-69 home loss Dec. 29.

"When you play a team that is as talented as they are and as skilled as they are, in terms of scoring the basketball, you have to make plays when you have the opportunity to make plays," Tulsa coach Frank Haith said after that meeting. "We weren't able to make those plays. Give them credit. They are an extremely talented team."

A 23-win team that went 14-4 in the league last season, the Golden Hurricane haven't been quite as sharp in 2015-16. Though it shot 51.9 percent in Sunday's 77-63 home victory over the Cougars, Tulsa's hit 38 percent of its shots and gone 11 of 52 from 3-point range while losing two straight on the road.

"The way this has played out you can't hang your head, and you got to move on to the next one," Haith said. "We have another great opportunity on Wednesday to play one ofthe best teams in the country."

Third in the AAC averaging 16.2 points, Tulsa guard James Woodard hit five 3-pointers and finished with 22 points against the Mustangs in December. He went 10 of 16 from beyond the arc while scoring a career-high 30 at SMU last season.

Nic Moore (15.8 ppg) scored 23 at Tulsa, and has averaged 20 in three career meetings.

Freshman teammate Shake Milton, who scored 22 on Sunday, had a season-high 24 against the Golden Hurricane.

Tulsa has lost 16 straight road games against Top 25 teams since winning at then-No. 11 Tennessee Dec. 23, 1999.

Preview: Cyclones (17-6) at Red Raiders (13-9)
Date: February 10, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Adversity isn't anything new for an Iowa State team that's been adjusting to injuries and defections since the summer.

Short-handed on the road for a second consecutive game, the 14th-ranked Cyclones will rely on that resiliency once again in Wednesday night's matchup with fading Texas Tech.

Lacking both size and depth heading into coach Steve Prohm's first season, the Cyclones have been further thinned in both areas. Starting guard Naz Mitrou-Long was lost to a season-ending hip injury in mid-December and Prohm suspended center Jameel McKay prior to Saturday's game at Oklahoma State. Iowa State (17-6, 6-4 Big 12) has withstood those challenges, not to mention former coach Fred Hoiberg's departure to the NBA in June, to remain a contender in a league rated as the nation's toughest by the RPI.

The transition hasn't always been smooth, as evidenced by consecutive losses to ranked teams Texas A&M and West Virginia entering the Oklahoma State game, in which the Cyclones overcame an unusually poor shooting opening half to earn a much-needed 64-59 win.

Iowa State shot 57.1 percent after the break and ended the game on a 10-4 run after trailing 55-54 with 3:22 left.

'I think it was just adjusting,' guard Monte Morris said. 'We talked big about spacing at halftime and that was a big emphasis that we put in after halftime. We came out and were able to get the job done.'

Morris and Georges Niang, the two constants during the Cyclones' trying season, sparked the surge. Niang, who moved to center in McKay's absence, scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half and Morris had 13 of his 16 in the final period.

Prohm will deploy that same lineup against struggling Texas Tech (13-9, 3-7) after announcing that McKay, third in the Big 12 with 9.0 rebounds per game and Iowa State's best interior defender, won't play again as punishment for violating an unspecified team rule. Prohm said during his Monday press conference he's hopeful the senior will be reinstated for Saturday's home game against Texas.

"I have younger kids that I have to set an example for. I've got recruits. I want to do special things here," Prohm said. "I want things a certain way, and that's the way it needs to be in every area. Some things I let go that the end of the day, I can't let go.

"It's not just about this year. I want Georges Niang, Monte Morris, Jameel McKay and Abdel Nader to come back in three years and be damn proud of the Iowa State basketball program. That's why I have to make the decisions I make."

McKay's absence should be felt, as he recorded 19 points and 14 rebounds in a 76-69 home win over the Red Raiders on Jan. 6.

Whether Texas Tech can take advantage remains to be seen. The Red Raiders are without top post player Norense Odiase, sidelined with a broken foot, and have shot 36.3 percent over their last four games. Leading scorer Devaugntah Williams (11.6 ppg) is averaging just 6.0 points during a stretch of four losses in five games.

Texas Tech has lost eight of 10 following an 11-1 start and 13 straight against ranked teams since a 78-73 win over then-No. 9 Iowa State in Lubbock on Jan. 24, 2015. The Red Raiders were 11 of 24 on 3s in that game but 2 of 15 in last month's meeting.

Wednesday's six-pack

Six of the best minor league prospects for the Chicago Cubs
1) Gleyber Torres, SS-- Cubs have lot of middle infielders; could be traded.
2) Willson Contreras C-3B-- Hit .333 in Southern League LY.
3) Ian Happ, 2B-OF-- Of Cubs' top 10 prospects, only one who went to college.
6) Albert Almora, OF- Hasn't shown much power for an outfielder.
7) Billy McKinney, OF-- Acquired from Oakland in Samardzija trade.
12) Pierce Johnson, P-- Went 6-2, 2.08 in AA last year (16 starts).

Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings..........

13) New Orleans Saints have $22M of dead money on their payroll for next year; Atlanta has $15M of dead money, no one else has more than $6M of dead money.

12) Why the A's traded Josh Donaldson last year; this week he signed a two-year, $29M deal with Toronto, which the A's were never going to pay. To get anything decent in return, you have to trade a guy a year early, just the way it is. Good for him.

11) Michigan Wolverines are having spring football practice in Florida, which may be something that gets outlawed by this time next year. SEC teams are not happy.

10) Read something today that Sacramento Kings now won't fire George Karl, since the minority owners objecting to tossing away more money.

9) Do the Denver Nuggets regret firing Karl? They were 423-257 in regular season under Karl, but only 21-38 in playoff games- they got impatient and canned him. Well, since Denver fired Karl, they're 87-133- all change is not positive.

8) Likewise, Tom Thibodeau went 255-139 with Chicago, but 23-28 in playoff games; the players whined that Thibodeau worked them too hard, so they fired him, but now they're 27-24 and players are falling left and right. Jimmy Butler is out 3-4 weeks with a bad knee and no one can blame Thibodeau.

7) Clippers docked Blake Griffin five game checks for hitting a team employee- he broke his hand and is on the injured list. LY, Griffin made $215,544.09 per game; that makes a 5-game suspension worth $1,077,720.29. Griffin hasn't played since Dec 25.

6) Two Cuban baseball players, who are brothers, defected at the Caribbean World Series last week; the one guy is a really good 3B. The drama here is that the father of these kids is apparently a bigshot in the Cuban military. Whoops.

5) Seven different college basketball teams got a first-place vote in the top 25 poll this week; thats how crazy this season has been. There is no great, dominant team.

4) Former used car salesman/baseball commish Alan R Selig will now be teaching a class at the Arizona State Sports Law/Business School. If I had to do it all over again, I'd go to college at ASU or Santa Barbara or San Diego State. Its good to be warm.

3) Duke's starting quarterback tore his achilles Tuesday, which means he probably won't be playing this fall. He had previously torn the other achilles. Bad break.

2) Add another current D-I coach who appeared as a player in Blue Chips; lefty Rex Walters, who was a damn good player and is now coach at San Francisco. He plays for Rick Pitino's team in the opening basketball scenes of that fine movie.

1) Purdue 82, Michigan State 81 OT-- Excellent game between two of the better teams in the country. Boilers led by 18 in first half, 16 at the half- they outscored the Spartans 22-12 on the foul line. .

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Monmouth cruised to an 87-61 win at Marist last night as a 9.5-point road favorite. The Hawks have won six in a row with five of those victories coming by double-digit margins. They are No. 31 in the RPI.

WEDNESDAY, FEB. 10

Matchup Records Skinny Projection

Providence
Overall: 18-6 SU, 13-10 ATS
Big East: 6-5 SU, 6-5 ATS
Totals: 13-10 O/U

Marquette
Overall: 15-9 SU, 9-14 ATS
Big East: 4-7 SU, 4-7 ATS
Totals: 14-9 O/U
(20) Providence at Marquette
The Friars look to snap an 0-9 mark against the Golden Eagles in Milwaukee to avoid their first three-game losing streak. Excellent PF Ben Bentil should play despite not practicing the last two days in order to give his injured ankle time to heal. Providence won the first meeting between these teams 65-64 on Jan. 5. Avoiding miscues should be the key to this near pick'em. Marquette ranks 316th nationally in turnover percentage, while Providence forces them at a clip that ranks 22nd. All-America candidate Kris Dunn squares off with impressive Marquette freshman Haanif Cheatham in a battle of talented big guards, while Bentil will see plenty of skilled big man Henry Ellenson, a potential lottery pick.

(15) Texas A&M at Alabama
The Aggies have fallen out of first place in the SEC following losses in three of their last four. A&M is on its first losing streak of the season as it visits Tuscaloosa before visiting first-place LSU on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson Tide is 3-2 against ranked foes this season and hopes to have forward Shannon Hale (11.3 ppg) back after a two-game absence due to a foot injury. Alabama is 8-3 at home (5-3 ATS) and has beaten the Aggies in four of their last five trips into town. The Crimson Tide is 2-2 SU (3-1) ATS as a home underdog like they are tonight. A&M saw its 81-78 weekend home loss to South Carolina end a run of seven straight where the under prevailed. The over has hit in three consecutive 'Bama games.

Kansas State

Big 12: 3-7 SU, 7-3 ATS
Totals: 11-9 O/U
(21) Baylor at Kansas State
The Wildcats come off this season's landmark win, an 80-69 victory over then-No. 1 Oklahoma on Saturday. They'll look to avoid an emotional hangover as a slight favorite against another nationally-ranked foe, a Bears squad they lost to 79-72 in double-OT in Waco, covering as an 8.5-point underdog on Jan. 20. K-State hasn't won consecutive games since Dec. 29, struggling in Big 12 play. K-State is 1-8 (5-3-1 ATS) against ranked opponents, but is 10-2 (7-3 ATS) straight up at home. Bears forwards Taurean Prince (14.9p/6.0r) and Rico Gathers (12.7p/10.3r) combined for 30 points and 21 boards in the win. K-State's leading scorer in that game, Kamau Stokes, poured in 20 off the bench but is unavailable tonight due to a knee injury.

Texas Tech
Overall: 13-9 SU, 9-10 ATS
Big 12: 3-7 SU, 3-7 ATS
Totals: 9-10 O/U
(14) Iowa State at Texas Tech
The Cyclones snapped a two-game losing streak at Oklahoma State over the weekend, allowing a season-low 59 points. F Jameel McKay, the Cyclones' top rebounder (9.0) and shot-blocker (1.7), remains suspended indefinitely. Texas Tech has gone 1-4 since PF Norense Odiase broke his foot. The Red Raiders have lost eight of 10 since opening Big 12 play with a win over Texas, a stretch that started with a 76-69 loss at Iowa State on Jan. 6 where they covered as 11-point dogs. That game was lower-scoring than expected, which has become a trend of late since the under is 6-0-1 in ISU's last seven games. The under has hit in Texas Tech's last three contests.

Totals: 10-8 O/U
Tulsa at (16) SMU
Larry Brown's Mustangs are just 2-2 since opening the season 18-0, but remain atop the American Athletic Conference standings. They'll look for a season sweep of the Golden Hurricane, which they beat in Tulsa 81-69 on Dec. 29 to open league play. SMU freshman guard Shake Milton, a Tulsa native, scored 24 points on 8-for-9 shooting, hitting 7-for-8 3-pointers. The Golden Hurricane's top scorer, James Woodard (16.2 ppg), had 22 points against SMU last month and torched it for a career-high 30 in last year's loss in Dallas. Tulsa has won 7 of 9 and is 4-2 (SU and ATS) in true road games. SMU is 12-0 (3-5 ATS) at home and has a massive game scheduled in Dallas this weekend against visiting Gonzaga.

Preview: Ducks (20-4) at Golden Bears (15-8)
Date: February 11, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

With a six-game winning streak, a 1 1/2-game conference lead and seven games remaining, the initial thought might be Oregon is favorably positioned for its first regular-season crown since 2001-02.

Then consider four of those remaining seven games are on the road beginning Thursday night with a California team that's yet to lose a home game of any kind this season, and coach Dana Altman is still rejecting his team being on any kind of inside track.

That could change for the 11th-ranked Ducks (20-4, 9-2) if they make it through the weekend with wins over the Golden Bears (15-8, 5-5) and two days later at Stanford, but that's a big if even for the conference leaders. Oregon is 15-0 at home with six Pac-12 wins but 4-3 in true road games, including 3-2 in the league with both losses coming at unranked opponents. Cal, meanwhile, is 14-0 at home with five conference victories highlighted by wins over then-No. 12 Arizona and then-No. 21 Utah.

"There's still so many teams in striking distance, and we have four very difficult road games (in the Bay Area this weekend, and Los Angeles in early March)," Altman told the team's official website. "We are in the lead at this point, but you've got Utah and Arizona there with five home games left, and the potential to have a big run here to finish the season. So we're just going to have to keep playing. I hope our guys keep the edge, because that's how we've been able to win a few games."

The winning streak is tough to ignore, particularly on the offensive end with the Ducks averaging 83.5 points on 48.1 percent after Sunday's 76-66 home win over Utah. Dillon Brooks scored 30 points on 12 of 22 and has averaged 20.4 points on 52.8 percent in his last eight games, yet his coach wants to see more from him defensively.

"People tend to put everything on the offensive end, and he had a great game offensively," Altman said. "He had a couple of communication gaps on the defensive end, and I don't know if it was his best (game), but it ranks right up there."

Yet offensive execution will be key against a stingy Cal team. The season series opened with Oregon's 68-65 home win on Jan. 6 as Brooks was limited to four points on 2-of-10 shooting. Chris Boucher scored 18 points to lead the Ducks to their second straight win in the series despite shooting 40.7 percent, but the Golden Bears had won the previous 12 meetings.

Last season's Oregon win came at Cal, but Haas Pavilion has been especially hostile territory this season. The Golden Bears' 15-game home winning streak dating back to the final game of last season is tied for their fifth longest ever.

This season's portion of the streak has come thanks in large part to Cal's Pac-12-leading scoring defense (66.7 points per game) and opponent field-goal percentage (38.8). After Saturday's 76-61 win over Stanford, those numbers are at 62.0 and 36.4 at home.

Cal has also shown some offensive depth lately. Jordan Mathews finished with a game-high 18 points and is averaging 15.2 in five straight games off the bench after starting the first 18 games with 12.9.

Fellow reserve Kameron Rooks had 11 points and 12 rebounds for his first career double-double. It was a career-high scoring night while the 7-footer finished with a career high in rebounds for a second straight game.

"I'm just playing as hard as I can, crashing the glass and taking care of my defense," Rooks said.

Preview: Hawkeyes (19-4) at Hoosiers (19-5)
Date: February 11, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

Iowa hasn't been atop the Big Ten this late in a season in 10 years, and it's been much longer since it won a regular-season conference title.

The fourth-ranked Hawkeyes don't need a history lesson to know what's at stake over the last seven games, though, especially with two coming against an Indiana team also in the mix.

Iowa looks to extend its winning streak to four when it visits the Hoosiers on Thursday night in a matchup of the Big Ten's highest-scoring teams.

The Hawkeyes (19-4, 10-1) hold a half-game lead on No. 2 Maryland and sit in first place this deep into a campaign for the first time since 2005-06, when they last won the conference tournament title. They haven't won a regular-season championship since sharing it in 1979 and haven't won an outright title since 1970.

Coach Fran McCaffery insists winning the Big Ten is the furthest thing from his mind, but the importance of beating Indiana (19-5, 9-2) still stands in regards to the standings. Iowa is coming off Sunday's 77-65 win at Illinois and hasn't lost since falling 74-68 at Maryland on Jan. 28.

The Hawkeyes are averaging 78.5 points in conference play to lead the Big Ten, with the Hoosiers close behind at 78.2.

"It's going to be very up-tempo," said Iowa senior guard Mike Gesell, who needs two points to reach 1,000 for his career. "That's how we want to play, and they want to play that way, too."

Indiana is averaging a Big Ten-high 84.1 points overall - Iowa is second at 80.7 - but it was held in check Saturday at Penn State. The Hoosiers shot a season-low 36.2 percent and scored their second-fewest points in a 68-63 loss.

Nick Zeisloft scored 14 for Indiana, which shot 44.4 percent from 3-point range over its first 21 but has hit 28 percent over the last three.

"It just goes to show what kind of league this is," guard Robert Johnson said. "In the Big Ten, you have to come out every game with the same mindset and be prepared to go out there and battle."

Yogi Ferrell went 3 of 12 from the field and finished with 13 points while committing five turnovers, but McCaffery isn't putting much stock into one tough performance.

Ferrell is fourth in the Big Ten with 17.3 points per game - Iowa's Jarrod Uthoff is third at 18.4 - and third with a 47.4 field-goal percentage. The senior guard also is fourth with 5.8 assists per contest, just behind Gesell's 6.0 average that ranks third.

"Yogi is as tough a cover as there is out there," McCaffery said. "He's equally gifted at scoring the ball or finding other people."

Indiana coach Tom Crean knows slowing Uthoff is only part of the battle. Peter Jok is averaging 19.5 points over his last eight after scoring 23 against Illinois, and Adam Woodbury has four double-doubles in his last six.

The Hoosiers visit Iowa on March 1.

"They have so many guys who can score," Crean said. "The unselfishness that they play with, the ball movement they play with - the numbers certainly (show it). For us to win the game, we've really got to do a great job of not playing into their hands and getting back at a high rate defensively."

Uthoff scored 14 points and Ferrell finished with 11 while shooting 3 of 11 in Iowa's 77-63 win at Indiana in the last meeting March 3 to end a three-game skid in the series.

Thursday's Tip Sheet
February 10, 2016

**Florida State at Syracuse**

-- Both of these teams are 6-5 in ACC action and on the proverbial NCAA bubble, so this is a crucial ACC clash at the Carrier Dome on Thursday night. ESPN will provide the telecast at 7:00 p.m. Eastern.

-- Syracuse (16-8 straight up, 11-12 against the spread) is No. 46 in the RPI Rankings, compiling a 5-4 record against the Top 50 and a 7-7 ledger versus the Top 100. The Orange have one bad loss outside of the RPI 100, dropping an 84-72 decision at St. John’s (RPI: 203). They own quality wins over St. Bonaventure, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech at home, in addition to road wins at Duke and at Wake Forest. Jim Boeheim’s squad also has a pair of neutral-court triumphs over UConn and Texas A&M.

-- Syracuse is 11-3 SU and 6-7 ATS at home.

-- Syracuse has won three in a row and six of its last seven, going 5-2 ATS during this surge. The Orange beat Va. Tech 68-60 in overtime last Tuesday, but it failed to cover the number as a nine-point home favorite. Boeheim’s bunch has had eight days to rest and prep for FSU since then. In the win over the Hokies, Michael Gbinije scored a team-high 16 points. Tyler Roberson added 12 points and 15 rebounds.

-- Gbinije is enjoying a stellar senior campaign, averaging a team-best 17.2 PPG. He also averages team-highs in assists (4.4 APG) and steals (2.3 SPG). Fellow senior Trevor Cooney is scoring at a 13.5 PPG clip. Roberson (9.8 PPG) averages team-bests in rebounding (9.1 RPG) and field-goal percentage (51.3%).

-- FSU (16-7 SU, 9-9-1 ATS) is No. 39 in the RPI, going 3-5 against the Top 50 and 6-7 versus the Top 100. The Seminoles have a home win over Virginia, a victory at Florida and a neutral-court scalp of VCU. Other victories of note include vs. Clemson, at Wake Forest and vs. Ohio on a neutral court. They don’t have any shameful defeats outside the Top 100.

-- Since losing back-to-back game at Louisville and vs. Pitt, Leonard Hamilton’s team has won four in a row while going 2-1-1 ATS. FSU smashed Wake Forest this past Saturday by a 91-71 count as a 2.5-point road favorite. Five Seminoles scored in double figures and seven different players had at least nine points. Malik Beasley had a team-best 16 points, while Montay Brandon and Xavier Rathan-Mayes added 13 points apiece.

-- FSU has been an underdog seven times this year, posting a 4-3 spread with three outright victories. The spread cover as a ‘dog sans the outright win came in a 78-75 loss at Iowa in overtime while catching 5.5 points.

-- Beasley averages team-highs in scoring (17.3 points per game) and field-goal percentage (51.5%). The freshman guard averages 5.5 RPG and is draining 41.7 percent of his launches from downtown. Beasley is making 84.2 percent of his free throws. Another FSU freshman, 6’7” swingman Dwayne Bacon, is scoring at a 16.2 PPG clip. Bacon averages 5.8 RPG. Rathan-Mayes (11.7 PPG) has dished out a team-high 108 assists.

-- FSU is 4-4 SU and 4-3 ATS on the road this year.

-- Since joining the ACC, Syracuse has won both head-to-head meetings against FSU both SU and ATS, including a 70-57 win last year as a 9.5-point home ‘chalk.’ Cooney scored a game-high 28 points for the Orange.

-- The ‘under’ is 12-11 overall for the ‘Cuse, 8-5 in its home games.

-- The ‘over’ is 10-9-1 overall for FSU, 5-3 in its road assignments. The Seminoles have seen the ‘over’ cash in three consecutive contests.

**Iowa at Indiana**

-- Iowa (19-4 SU, 13-7 ATS) is atop the Big Ten standings with a 10-1 record, leaving it one-half game ahead of Maryland and one game in front of Indiana.

-- Fran McCaffrey’s squad has won five of its seven road contests both SU and ATS.

-- Iowa is No. 7 in the RPI Rankings, posting a 4-4 record against the Top 25, a 6-4 mark versus the Top 50 and a 7-4 ledger against the Top 100. The Hawkeyes already own season sweeps over Purdue and Michigan St., in addition to a neutral-court win over Wichita St. They have home scalps of FSU and Michigan.

-- Since losing at Maryland on Jan. 28, Iowa has won three in a row both SU and ATS, including Sunday’s 77-65 win at Illinois as an 8.5-point favorite. Peter Jok scored a game-high 23 points, while Jarrod Uthoff went for 18 points, 12 rebounds and two blocked shots. Adam Woodbury contributed 10 points, 14 boards and four assists.

-- Uthoff is averaging 18.4 points, 6.4 rebounds and 2.8 blocked shots per game. The senior forward is burying 46.7 percent of his attempts from 3-point range and 84.1 percent of his shots from the charity stripe.

-- Indiana (19-5 SU, 12-12 ATS) is unbeaten in 13 home games with a 9-4 spread record.

-- IU won its first seven Big Ten games, but it has dropped two of its last four. The Hoosiers lost 68-63 Saturday at Penn St. as 8.5-point road ‘chalk.’ Ferrell scored 13 points but made only 3-of-12 from the field and 1-of-6 from long distance. He also had as many turnovers (five) as assists (five). Nick Zeisloft drained 4-of-7 from behind the 3-point line and finished with a team-best 14 points in just 20 minutes of playing time from off the bench. Thomas Bryant had 10 points and eight rebounds.

-- Tom Crean’s hot-seat status has been removed with the way his team has been playing recently. His club is led by senior point guard Yogi Ferrell, who averages team-highs in scoring (17.2 PPG), assists (5.8 APG) and steals (1.2 SPG).

-- Indiana is No. 53 in the RPI due to playing just a pair of games against the Top 50. The Hoosiers beat Notre Dame on a neutral court and lost at Duke. They are 6-3 versus the Top 100. Another reason IU’s RPI isn’t as high as you’d expect is because of defeats to UNLV and Penn St., both of whom are outside of the Top 100.

-- The ‘under’ is 13-11 overall for IU, 7-6 in its home games.

-- The ‘over’ is 11-9 overall for the Hawkeyes, but the ‘under’ is 4-3 in their road assignments.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Temple will play host to UConn on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. The Owls are 8-3 in AAC play, leaving them one game back of conference-leading SMU. The Huskies are 7-3 in AAC action. Temple owns a 5-2 spread record at home. The Owls covered in six straight games until dropping three of their last four versus the number.

-- ESPNU will have the broadcast of VCU at UMass on Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. Eastern. The Rams, who are 9-2 ATS in their last 11 games, have compiled a 6-1 record both SU and ATS in their seven road assignments this year.

-- VCU saw its 12-game winning streak snapped in Saturday’s 72-69 home loss to George Washington. The Rams hadn’t tasted defeat since a home loss to Cincinnati on Dec. 19.

-- Oregon will put its Pac-12 lead on the line Thursday at California. The Ducks are 9-2 in league play, 1.5 games in front of 7-3 USC. Dana Altman’s club has won six in a row both SU and ATS, winning all of those games by eight points or more and five of them by double-digit margins. Tip-off in Berkeley is slated for 9:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2.

-- Cal is undefeated in 14 home games with a 9-5 spread record.

-- Gamblers have a pair of late-night games that’ll be televised Thursday. Fox Sports 1 will carry Oregon State at Stanford at 11:00 p.m. Eastern, while ESPNU will have Gonzaga at Portland in the same time slot.

Armadillo: Thursday's six-pack

Six of the best minor league prospects for the Chicago White Sox

1) Tim Anderson, SS-- Hit .312 in the Southern League LY.

3) Frankie Montas, P-- Jumped from AA to majors last year.

4) Spencer Adams, P-- HS kid from Georgia is 15-8, 3.16 in 33 MILB starts.

7) Jacob May, OF-- His grandfather Lee May was a damn good player.

8) Micah Johnson, 2B-- Got 100 ABs in big leagues last summer.

11) Jordan Guerrero, P-- White Sox have a fondness for high school pitchers.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) According to the LA Times, a young girl scout set up shop selling cookies next door to a marijuana depository-- she sold 117 boxes in two hours. Smart girl; hope she had a bodyguard

12) Kentucky has three alumni in the NBA All-Star Game Sunday, the most of any college.

11) Wofford hammered VMI 92-60 earlier this week; Terriers made 17-21 behind the arc, I've never seen a team shoot that high a percentage on 3-pointers.

10) There were 27 NBA scouts repesenting 15 teams at the Providence-Marquette game last night, mainly to see Dunn, Bentil and young Ellerson- they wound up seeing a double OT game, with Marquette winning- pretty fun ame.

9) Bernie Sanders' campaign raised $5.2M in the first 18 hours after he won the New Hampshire primary; these politicians sure raise a lot of cash. People in our society are frontrunners; you win a primary, you get $$-- you lose, you run out of money.

8) South Carolina is having a great basketball season- they do not have much hoop tradition- their last win in the NCAA tournament was in 1973

7) Gambling is difficult: Delaware is 0-12 in the CAA, but they're 2.5-point favorite over 1-11 Drexel tonight. Good luck handicapping that game.

6) I have the NBA package, so this doesn't bother as much as it would otherwise, but why are the Lakers on national TV so much? I know this is Kobe Bryant's last year, but he is washed up and the Lakers stink. Enough already

5) West Virginia basketball coach Bob Huggins gets a $25K bonus every time his team beats Kansas, which they did last month. Hope he at least buys the kids extra pizza or sweatsuits or something.

4) Wisconsin has now won its last six games; would the Badgers keep interim coach Greg Gard, who took over from Bo Ryan? He is proving he can coach.

3) San Diego Padres' scouting department will be busy this spring; they have six of the top 85 picks in the June draft, giving them an excellent chance of replenishing their farm system, if they strike it rich with those six picks.

2) Congrats to my cousin Kevin, the new track coach at CW Post on Long Island. He is an excellent coach- this will be an interesting challenge for him. If you know any kids in high school who can run fast, CW Post is a good school.

1) Our thoughts/prayers go out to Monty Williams, assistant coach for the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder; his wife was struck and killed by a car yesterday- they've got five kids, just a very, very sad situation.
