Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

-- Hofstra 70, UNCW 69-- Pride won after trailing by 18; they lost first matchup vs Seahawks, after leading by 20.

-- UAB 95, Marshall 91-- Blazers have two-game lead in Conference USA.

-- Utah 81, Arizona State 46-- This game was 44-10 at the half. 44. to. 10.

-- California 75, UCLA 63-- Golden Bears won their last six games.

-- East Tennessee State 80, Furman 75-- Bucs are 9-1 in SoCon games decided by 6 or less points or in OT.

-- Cal-Riverside 77, Hawai'i 71-- Big upset out west in latenight action.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here......

13) Saw something I never saw before last night; kid was taking a foul shot, the ball rattles in and out and wedged between the rim and the backboard. The ref looked at it for a second, like he had no idea what to do. Never saw that happen before, not even on a playground. They went to the possession arrow, by the way.

12) One of the things they do at the NFL Combine is give players physicals- the QBs get their hands measured-- big hands are an advantage, especially for teams that might play lot of games in bad weather. Jared Goff measured in with a 9-inch hand; a little less than optimal, but big enough so it won't hurt his standing in the draft.

One of the reasons Johnny Manziel appealed to Cleveland was that he has big hands, and should be OK playing in cold weather. Scouting is an inexact scienece; Manziel's issues obviously have very little to do with his play on the field.

11) NFL has tremendous skill at always staying in the news; the Combine this week is just a series of workouts/job interviews-- would be great TV if they aired the teams' interview part, which they obviously cannot.

Super Bowl was 19 days ago; you'd think this was a dead time of year, but they have this and then free agency starts March 9 and then they'll have the schedule unveling and the draft in April and that is why the NFL has a daily show os ESPN, year-round.

10) Colin Kaepernick is slated to make $11.9M next year, the 49ers say they he will be on the roster April 1, but apparently Kaepernick has sought permission to seek out a trade. How much can you get for a guy you benched for Blaiine Gabbert?

9) Pac-12 needs to do something about court storming before someone gets hurt; every time Arizona loses a road game, opponents' fans rush the floor after the game- it looks dangerous and it can be. Sean Miller spoke out about it Wednesday night- you'd hope the schools will get together and get security in place to prevent it.

8) Not only did Steph Curry have 51 points last night, he had eight assists, seven rebounds. The best player in the NBA is only 6-foot-3- he's made a 3-pointer in 128 straight games, a new NBA record. .

7) Baseball is putting up a 0:30 clock for coaches/managers' visits to the mound this year, as they try to speed up the game. I'll do them one better; why not just ban the visits to the mound altogether- what would that hurt? If you change pitchers, just sub them in/out like players do in basketball. if they're serious about shortening games, lot of ways to do it pretty easily, without screwing around with the actual game.

Random opinion: I love watching baseball, I don't think games are too long and I can amuse myself during stoppages in play, so I'm not a stickler that games need to be a lot shorter, but if you're trying to shorten them, this is an easy way to do it.

6) Put it this way: I'm fairly excited that exhibition games start Tuesday.

5) There was a report on the Interweb yesterday that Yoenis Cespedes was wearing his hat backwards during batting practice, a la Ken Griffey Jr and that Terry Collins wasn't that happy about it and was going to say something to him about it. Oy.

I'd be more concerned about those fancy cars Cespedes drives to the ballpark every day; they don't look like they were designed to stay under the speed limit. But if they do get sick of Cespedes and his backwards hat, feel free to send him back to Oakland.

4) Ever see those Dos Equus beer commercials, the ones with The Most Interesting Man in the World? I was informed yesterday that Mr Interesting lives about 100 miles south of here, in same town as one of my friends and he is in his late 70's now, being a 1956 high school graduate. He was at Saratoga racetrack couple of summers ago and drew quite a crowd- the power of television.

3) Interweb was reporting Wednesday night that Dexter Fowler signed with Baltimore for three years, $35M, after he turned down a 1-year, $15.8 deal from the Cubs early in this offseason. Turns out the Interweb was wrong; Fowler signed with the Cubs yesterday, for one year, $9M. Then his agent went public, bashing the Orioles for leaking info on the negotiations- I'm guessing the agent got an earful from Fowler and is now trying to avoid being fired by his client.

2) A's traded a struggling pitcher (Aaron Brooks) for a journeyman utility man (Chris Coghlan) yesterday, who became expendable once the Cubs re-signed Fowler. Brooks had a 6.71 ERA in nine starts LY. Coghlan was Rookie of the Year in 2009 and hit 16 HRs LY; his .340 career on-base %age ain't bad- to get him for basically nothing is a solid move by Oakland.

1) I'm amazed that each college basketball conference doesn't have an official basketball to be used during all conference games; each school can use whatever ball it sees fit. Apparently there is a big difference between Nike, adidas, Under Armour basketballs; some of the Wisconsin players were complaining about it last month.

Preview: Red Raiders (18-9) at Jayhawks (24-4)
Date: February 27, 2016 12:00 PM EDT

(AP) - The championships could easily blend together, one right into the next, each one special but none of them rising above the rest during Kansas' remarkable string of Big 12 titles.

Instead, No. 12 may trump all others.

That's the opinion of coach Bill Self, who has presided over all of them, and it's rooted in this logic: Never before has the league featured so many elite teams. And if the second-ranked Jayhawks can beat Texas Tech in Allen Fieldhouse on Saturday, the five-time national champions will move within one of matching the record of 13 consecutive championships established by the UCLA teams of the 1960s and '70s.

'I do think this one will be significant for our players and for me and our staff,' Self explained, 'because it's a year in which our conference was probably the best it's ever been.'

The Jayhawks (24-4, 12-3) swept Oklahoma, which spent time at No. 1 this season. They've split with West Virginia, which has been a top-10 mainstay. And proved to No. 17 Iowa State, No. 25 Texas, 19th-ranked Baylor and the rest that the road to Big 12 supremacy still tracks along Naismith Drive in Lawrence.

'There are a lot of positives about our league that winning it this year, at least from our perspective, would probably be more of an accomplishment,' Self said, 'because you're not going through one or two teams. You've got to beat six or whatever. And so that to me is pretty significant.'

Just to be clear, Self adds: 'If we're fortunate enough to win it.'

But consider the fact that the Red Raiders are 0-15 at Allen Fieldhouse, and Kansas has won 38 straight in their building, and the enormity of the challenge facing coach Tubby Smith's crew comes into focus.

Texas Tech (18-9, 8-7), however, has won five in a row for the first time in its 20-year stay in the league, which includes victories over Iowa State, Baylor and Oklahoma.

Aaron Ross has keyed the surge, scoring a career-high 25 in Tuesday's 83-79 win over TCU. The junior reserve is averaging 17.6 points in the last five - 6.9 better than his season average.

"You have to have talent to compete in this league or at any level," Smith said. "We've got some talented players that are playing to their potential. We always talk about overachieving and playing harder and playing smarter. I think we have some players that are recognizing that if they don't play harder and smarter then we aren't going to win. We've stayed positive."

Although Texas Tech has seen marked improvement, averaging 77.6 points and 43.8 percent 3-point shooting during the win streak after being at 66.6 and 33.1 in losing seven of nine, it hasn't beaten Kansas since March 2009.

The Jayhawks won 69-59 at Texas Tech on Jan. 9 to push their win streak in the series to 11. Frank Mason III and Perry Ellis each had double-doubles for Kansas, which held a 42-26 advantage on the boards.

Mason had 19 points while Landen Lucas had the tiebreaking layup with 3:03 left in Tuesday's 66-60 win at Baylor. Kansas made exactly half its shots for the third straight game in pushing its winning streak to eight.

'We just have an understanding to represent a streak that's been made by other people who have come before us, and made possible by them,' Landen Lucas said. 'There's an understanding that there's something greater than us that we have to keep alive.'

Kansas finishes with a trip to Texas on Monday and a home game against Iowa State next Saturday.

'We should be talking about playing Texas Tech, and that's how we'll handle it with our guys,' Self said. 'If we are able to take care of business and do well, then you have a chance to celebrate a little bit. But the reality of it is our last three games are against teams that are all ranked in the top 25 in the RPI, so we've still got a lot of work to do.'

Preview: Wildcats (22-6) at Utes (22-7)
Date: February 27, 2016 2:00 PM EDT

Arizona has been the Pac-12's standard-bearer in recent years, but Utah may be its best team right now.

Winners of five straight, the 22nd-ranked Utes may have their best chance at ending an 18-year series losing streak when the No. 9 Wildcats visit Huntsman Center on Saturday.

After losing three of its first four league games, Utah has won 10 of 12 to get within striking distance of its first Pac-12 title since joining the conference in 2011-12. The surge has moved the Utes (22-7, 11-5) past Arizona (22-6, 10-5) and within a half-game of first-place Oregon with two remaining.

Three of the last four wins have come in convincing fashion, including Thursday's 81-46 trouncing of Arizona State in which the Utes opened on a 30-2 run.

Jakob Poeltl has led Utah's re-emergence by averaging 20.5 points over a 10-game stretch and shooting 73.4 percent in the past six, but the Utes showed they have other options Thursday. With the Sun Devils packing their defense to limit the star center to five field goal attempts, Utah ended one 3-pointer shy of a school record with a 16-of-40 performance.

"We're a great shooting team. They kind of picked their poison,' said forward Jordan Loveridge, who's shooting 45.2 percent from 3 while averaging 14.8 points during the streak.

The Utes are averaging 82.8 points on 53.2 percent shooting during the run and held their own on the defensive end as well. They limited the Sun Devils to 25.0 percent and scored 25 points off 15 turnovers.

'We really wanted to focus on defense," forward Brekkott Chapman said. "If we want to keep playing as long as we can this season, that has to come first."

While clearly on the rise, the Utes have still yet to prove they can take down two-time defending conference champion Arizona. The Wildcats have won all eight meetings during Utah's Pac-12 tenure and 12 straight in the series. The Utes haven't beaten Arizona since a 76-51 victory in the West Regional final during their 1998 national runner-up season.

The Wildcats remained squarely in the mix for another Pac-12 crown by winning six straight prior to Wednesday's 75-72 loss at Colorado, their 20th consecutive game eclipsing 70 points. They're averaging 84.1 points, shooting 50.0 percent from the field and 41.4 percent on 3-pointers in league play - all conference bests.

Arizona also ranks among the national leaders with a plus-11.0 rebounding margin, and its prowess on the glass was a major factor in last season's two wins over the Utes. The Wildcats outrebounded Utah 84-54 while limiting the Utes to 34.4 percent shooting.

In 7-footers Kaleb Tarczewski and Dusan Ristic, Arizona has the size to conceivably neutralize Poeltl. Tarczewski is averaging 11.0 rebounds over his last six and amassed nine blocks in the past two.

However, the Wildcats had trouble containing Colorado big man Josh Scott, who scored 26 points with nine rebounds.

'Sometimes you have to take your hat off to the opponent and say they were the better team, and they were,' coach Sean Miller said. 'They were ready to play, they were the harder playing, more physical team."

The Wildcats fell to 4-4 on the road in Pac-12 play, while Utah's only home loss in 15 games came 77-59 to Oregon on Jan. 14.

Preview: Wildcats (24-4) at Golden Eagles (18-10)
Date: February 27, 2016 2:00 PM EDT

The first No. 1 ranking in Villanova history is about to go away. The one team that could benefit from the Wildcats still having it is Marquette.

Any extra notoriety for a potential upset could help a Golden Eagles team needing a statement-making victory to get on the NCAA Tournament bubble. They played Villanova tough earlier this season in Philadelphia, and they're at home for Saturday's rematch with a chance to hand the Wildcats back-to-back losses for the first time in nearly three years.

This is the final road game for Villanova (24-4, 13-2 Big East) after an ugly one Wednesday. Coach Jay Wright's team never led in the second half and trailed by as many as 15 in a 90-83 defeat to fifth-ranked Xavier.

"We just didn't defend well," said Wright, whose Wildcats still have the Big East's best defense. They allow 62.5 points per game and 38.9 percent from the field despite letting the Musketeers shoot 50.0 percent and become the first opponent to reach 90 points since February 2014.

Villanova is 11-0 following a loss since dropping its final two games of the 2012-13 season.

The latest defeat likely means the Wildcats' run at No. 1 will end after three weeks. Now they're merely trying to hold off Xavier for the Big East regular-season championship with the lead down to a half-game.

A conference tournament title may be the only way for Marquette (18-10, 7-8) to make the NCAA Tournament. Then again, a victory Saturday following back-to-back road wins over DePaul and Creighton could get the Golden Eagles into the conversation.

"I see this as a big game for our team because we're making a last-second push here and we're trying to do something special," freshman Henry Ellenson said.

Ellenson had his conference-best 16th double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds in Wednesday's 66-61 win over the Bluejays.

One of his least productive games came at Villanova on Jan. 13 with 12 points and eight boards in an 83-68 defeat. However, Marquette overcame a 16-point deficit to take the lead at halftime and was within one with 12 1/2 minutes remaining.

"We didn't go in scared," guard Haanif Cheatham said. " ... And I think that's gonna happen on Saturday, too. Guys are gonna go in with tons of confidence."

Plus, the Golden Eagles were missing JaJuan Johnson in the first meeting due to a neck injury. He's scored in double figures in six of the past eight games.

"I think we learned a lot from that game, and I think we've gotten a lot better," Ellenson said. "And having J.J. back will be a difference. I'm feeling real good about it."

Johnson had a game-high 20 points when Villanova visited last season, though Marquette lost 87-76.

Kris Jenkins led the Wildcats with 20 points against Marquette last month and has reached that mark in back-to-back games. Ryan Arcidiacono has at least eight assists in three straight but has shot 7 for 27.

Villanova has won the past seven meetings, but Wright knows the Golden Eagles have matured. Five of their top seven scorers are underclassmen.

"We had a tough time the first game with Marquette and we know this is a good young team that keeps getting better," he told Villanova's official website.

Counterpart Steve Wojciechowski called this the first meaningful late-season game for the Golden Eagles since he took over in 2014.

"This is a big-time game to be a part of," Wojciechowski said. "These are games you should attack and leave it all out on the basketball court."

Preview: Cardinals (22-6) at Hurricanes (22-5)
Date: February 27, 2016 2:00 PM EDT

Barred from the postseason, Louisville is sure competing like a team with something to play for.

The 11th-ranked Cardinals can still achieve their lone remaining goal of an ACC regular-season title, a quest aided by a three-game winning streak.

Those chances will be further impacted by the outcome of Saturday's visit to No. 12 Miami, which also sits in the thick of the championship race entering the season's stretch drive.

The self-imposed ban for the sex scandal has seemed to galvanize the Cardinals rather than deflate them. After stumbling briefly with consecutive road losses to Duke and Notre Dame, they've responded by winning last Saturday's rematch with the Blue Devils in between key victories over Syracuse and Pittsburgh.

The streak has vaulted Louisville (22-6, 11-4) into a second-place tie with Miami (22-5, 11-4). Both stand one game back of seventh-ranked North Carolina, which visits No. 3 Virginia in another high-stakes matchup on Saturday night.

"You would think we were favorites to win the national championship with the way we're practicing," coach Rick Pitino following Wednesday's 67-60 win at Pitt, in which the Cardinals closed on a 27-12 run to overcome an eight-point deficit with nine minutes left.

Louisville is receiving contributions throughout the roster to remain in the race despite season-ending injuries to key post players Mangok Mathiang and Anas Mahmoud. It received lifts from two seldom-used players on Wednesday, with freshman Deng Adel recording 12 points and seven rebounds starting in place of an injured Raymond Spalding and former walk-on David Levitch hitting a tie-breaking 3-pointer with 2:34 left that sparked an 8-0 run.

"We were just really undermanned (Wednesday), and they played beautiful basketball," Pitino said. "I've coached a lot of Final Four teams, some championship teams, but I haven't been any prouder of a basketball team than this one."

The Hurricanes also showed resolve in their last outing, bouncing back from last Saturday's 96-71 rout by North Carolina to earn a pivotal 64-61 win over Virginia. The result improved Miami to 5-1 in games decided by seven points or less, with four of those victories coming during its current 6-1 stretch.

'We got knocked down big time on Saturday and you've got to get back up and fight to show what you're made of,' coach Jim Larranaga said. 'I thought we did that (Monday) against an outstanding Virginia team.'

Davon Reed went 5 of 6 from 3-point range in a career-high 21-point effort and the Hurricanes had just nine turnovers, continuing their recent trend of taking care of the ball. They've averaged 9.3 giveaways over their last nine.

Louisville thrives on taking the ball away, forcing a conference-best 14.6 turnovers per game. The Cardinals induced 18 in their 71-64 comeback win over Duke, including eight in the final 10 minutes to rally from a 15-point second-half deficit.

The Cardinals have lost four straight on the road to ranked teams, suffering close defeats to Michigan State and Kentucky in December. Miami is 8-0 in ACC play at home and has won 12 straight in Coral Gables since being upset by Northeastern on Nov. 27.

Miami, 4-2 against Top 25 foes this season, is playing the third of a four-game sequence against ranked teams. The Hurricanes visit No. 23 Notre Dame on Wednesday.

Preview: Aggies (21-7) at Tigers (10-18)
Date: February 27, 2016 4:00 PM EDT

Texas A&M stayed in the hunt for an SEC title by edging one of the conference's lowliest teams earlier this week.

The No. 21 Aggies will get to face two more such opponents but those games are on the road, where they have lost four in a row.

They get their next chance to end that skid Saturday against Missouri.

Texas A&M's third consecutive win, 68-66 over Mississippi State on Wednesday, kept it one game behind Kentucky in the conference. Danuel House's free throws with 2.1 seconds left also helped the Aggies (21-7, 10-5) remain tied for second with South Carolina.

While trying to catch Kentucky, Texas A&M will face two teams that are a combined 8-22 in the conference. The Aggies, though, will need to end their longest road losing streak since a nine-game skid to end 2013-14.

"To win a championship and put yourself in position to win, you have got to win these (lower-level) games," coach Billy Kennedy said. "Everybody knows about the big-hype games. We've won all the big games (at home) against Baylor, Kentucky and Iowa State. You've got to win these games, too. They all count the same."

The Aggies will try to earn a fourth consecutive win over last-place Missouri (10-18, 3-12). They shot 36.1 percent against the Tigers on Jan. 23, but held them to 35.7 percent and a 3-for-19 performance from 3-point range in a 66-53 victory.

Jalen Jones scored 17 of his 20 points in the second half, but Texas A&M's leading scorer (15.5) has been held to six points in two of his last three games. He had 24 in a 79-77 overtime win against then-No. 14 Kentucky last Saturday.

Freshman center Tyler Davis, averaging 11.1 points, has a combined 30 in his past two games and matched a season high with 12 rebounds in the upset of the Wildcats. He missed the game against Missouri because of an injured left foot.

The Tigers won't have their leading scorer and rebounder from that matchup. Wes Clark, who had 12 points and nine boards, was dismissed Feb. 16 due to academic issues.

Missouri topped South Carolina 72-67 in its first game without its starting point guard to earn back-to-back SEC wins - both at home - for the first time in coach Kim Anderson's two seasons.

The Tigers have followed with a pair of road losses, falling 85-76 to Mississippi on Tuesday despite going a season-best 12 of 23 from 3-point range. Missouri shot 40.0 percent (14 of 35) from inside the arc.

Namon Wright made six 3s en route to a season-high 20 points and Tramaine Isabell scored a season-best 17 off the bench.

Leading scorer Kevin Puryear (11.6) failed to follow up on his season-high 23-point game against Arkansas last Saturday, as the freshman missed nine of 12 shots.

Texas A&M has won in four of its last six trips to Missouri and earned an 83-61 victory in last season's visit.

Already Texas A&M's career steals leader, Alex Caruso needs three assists to surpass David Edwards' 602 from 1991-94.

Preview: Fighting Irish (19-8) at Seminoles (16-12)
Date: February 27, 2016 4:00 PM EDT

Notre Dame stayed in the mix for a high seed in the ACC tournament by again avoiding a losing streak its last time out.

The No. 23 Fighting Irish will try to aid their chances by sending Florida State to its longest skid in 11 seasons Saturday.

Notre Dame (19-8, 10-5) hasn't lost back-to-back games in nearly two full seasons and bounced back from last weekend's 63-62 defeat at Georgia Tech with a 69-58 win at Wake Forest on Wednesday.

The Irish held the Demon Deacons to 31.4 percent shooting and a 4-for-24 performance from 3-point range, their best defensive effort beyond the arc this season.

"I'm really proud of our group because I thought for us to win, we had to defend," coach Mike Brey said. "That's an area we must continue to work on and improve on for March."

Notre Dame will try to close this month by remaining well in contention for one of the conference tournament's top four seeds and an automatic spot in the quarterfinals. The Irish are tied for fourth place with Virginia and Duke.

Notre Dame is one game behind second-place Louisville and Miami, a team the Irish will face at home Wednesday. It concludes the regular season next Saturday with a visit from North Carolina State.

First, the Irish will try to end their three-game road stretch by handing Florida State a sixth consecutive defeat. The Seminoles (16-12, 6-10) haven't endured a skid that long since dropping nine straight Feb. 2-March 3, 2005.

"We've just got to keep fighting, don't give up," guard Dwayne Bacon told the school's official website. "It's never too late to make our run. We can make a run from these last two home games and take it to Washington, D.C., for the ACC tournament. And who knows what we can do there?"

Florida State has allowed 80.2 points per game during the losing streak and forced a season-low five turnovers in an 80-65 loss at No. 15 Duke on Thursday.

Notre Dame is the ACC's third-best scoring team with 77.7 points per game but hasn't topped 70 in its past two. The Irish won 83-63 in their lone matchup with Florida State last season, as Zach Auguste led the way with a career-high 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting.

The senior forward recorded his 15th double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds against Wake Forest.

Demetrius Jackson contributed 18 points and seven rebounds in Notre Dame's first win in three all-time matchups against Florida State. The Irish's leading scorer (16.4) has had a pair of subpar shooting efforts on this road stretch, going 5 for 13 in each game while scoring a combined 27 points.

Florida State leading scorer Malik Beasley (16.0) has fared even worse during the skid, shooting 28.8 percent, and he's averaged 8.8 points in his last four.

Notre Dame, 5-4 on the road, was edged 76-74 in its only other visit to Florida State in January 2014. The Seminoles have lost back-to-back home games after winning eight of their first 10.

Florida State topped then-No. 13 Virginia 69-62 for one of those victories Jan. 17, but lost its three subsequent games against ranked teams to drop to 4-21 in those matchups since the beginning of 2012-13.
