Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

-- Ben Zobrist signs with the Cubs for four years, $56M, reuniting him with his old Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon.

-- Cubs then shipped Starlin Castro to the Bronx for Adam Warren, Brendan Ryan.

-- Diamondbacks are serious; they acquired Shelby Miller from Atlanta, giving the Braves Ender Inciarte, Dansby Swanson, #1 pick in LY's draft, in 5-player deal.

-- South Dakota State 84, Minnesota 70-- Jackrabbits get a solid road win.

-- Broncos worked out 17 players Tuesday, including nine DBs; teams that win are sharp on maintaining their depth to replace injured players.

-- Jay Cutler's brother-in-law has been missing for 12 days; police in Utah are still looking for him.

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Tell your statistics to shut up.......

I like numbers, think they can explain a lot, but not everything; some people don't like them as much, but there's enough room in this world for all kinds of ideas.

NFL moved kickoffs up to create more touchbacks, since most injuries were occurring on kick returns; as a result, more drives start 80+ yards from the end zone. Defenses and special teams that create short fields help teams win, but which offenses are best at driving the ball 80+ yards?

13) There are six NFL teams averaging 2.00+ ppp on drives starting 80+ yards from goal line (you lose points for defensive TDs/safeties allowed):

Cardinals/Steelers 2.28, Bengals 2.15, Raiders 2.13, Chiefs 2.08, Patriots 2.07.

12) Rams have started 80 drives 80+ yards from end zone, scored only 71 points on those drives; they're only NFL team averaging under 1.00 ppp in that scenario.

11) Other teams that struggle scoring on long (80-yard+) TD drives:

Rams 0.89, Browns 1.03, 49ers 1.19, Panthers 1.26-- Carolina has 10 drives of less than 60 yards and five defensive TDs, lightening the load on its offense. .

10) Chargers have started 92 drives 80+ yards from goal line, seven more than any other team (Saints), 12 more than any of the other teams. Hard to win when you're playing on a longer field than your opponent.

9) Patriots lead NFL with 15 TDs on drives of less than 60 yards, but they haven't scored a TD on defense or special teams this year- they gave up three on Sunday.

Bowl matchups were announced this week; some numbers on how conferences have done in recent bowl games.......
8) Big 14 teams have been an underdog in 27 of last 33 bowl games, going 13-20 SU in those games (14-17-2 vs spread).

7) SEC teams were favored in 32 of last 38 bowl games, going 25-13 SU, 23-14-1 vs spread, 5-1 in few games when they were an underdog.

6) Surprisingly good bowl league: Conference USA, which is 15-7 SU in bowls last four years, 12-8 vs spread (9-3 when favored).

5) ACC teams are 13-19 SU in their last 32 bowls, 3-8 vs spread when favored.

4) Big X games are famous for being high-scoring, but over last four years, bowl games involving Big X teams have seen 18 go under total, only ten go over.

Elsewhere in the world of numbers.........
3) Chicago White Sox used a lefty starting pitcher in 119 games LY, third-most by any team over the last 100 years.

2) Summit League is a mid-major basketball league that has teams like South Dakota State, North Dakota State, Oral Roberts, Denver; heading into Tuesday's games, teams from Summit League were 39-19 against the spread this year, pretty damn good.

1) Golden State Warriors are now 23-0 this season; they're 16-7 against the spread, 9-3 as a road favorite- their last seven games went over the total.

Sharp bettors are drooling over these can't-miss spot bet opportunities

Going back to last season, the Niners are 1-5 ATS in their last six games coming off an outright win.

Lookahead spot

The Chicago Bulls have busy week. They lost at home to Phoenix Monday night and have Tuesday to stew on that disappointment before visiting Boston Wednesday. That is shaping up as a possible lookahead spot, with Chicago returning to the United Center the next night to host the Los Angeles Clippers Thursday.

The Celtics are in fine form, going 3-2 on their recent five-game road trip with wins in three of the last four games while covering the spread in each of those contests. This will be Boston’s first game back home since Nov. 27. Chicago, looking past the Celtics to the Clippers, is just 6-8 ATS in non-divisional matchups this season.

Letdown spot

Wins are few and far between for the San Francisco 49ers, who caught Chicago in a letdown spot in Week 13 with a 17-16 road win as 6-point underdogs at Soldier Field. Now the tables have turned on the Niners, who are in danger of falling to the same fate visiting the Cleveland Browns in Week 14 as 1.5-point road dogs.

San Francisco has followed its three previous victories with crushing losses. The 49ers beat Minnesota in Week 1, then lost 43-18 to Pittsburgh in Week 2. They knocked off Baltimore in Week 6, then got dumped 20-3 by Seattle in Week 7. And most recently, San Francisco defeated Atlanta 17-16 in Week 9 and – despite a bye week to prepare – lost 29-13 to the Seahawks in Week 11. Going back to last season, the Niners are 1-5 ATS in their last six games coming off an outright win.

Schedule spot

The Oral Roberts Golden Eagles won’t be home much for the holidays, kicking off a five-game road stretch at state rival No. 8 Oklahoma this Saturday. The Golden Eagles, who play at home versus John Brown Wednesday, won’t have another contest in Tulsa until the New Year, playing South Dakota on Jan. 3.

Following the road game against the Sooners, Oral Roberts plays at Missouri State on Dec. 16, at LSU on Dec. 19, at New Mexico State on Dec. 21, and returns to action after the Christmas break with a trip to IUPU-Fort Wayne on Dec. 30. This year, the Golden Eagles are 2-2 ATS on the road and went just 5-10-1 ATS as visitors last season. With the holiday around the corner, basketball may not be the focus for these college kids as the break gets closer.

Top 25 roundup: No. 6 Maryland holds off UConn

Melo Trimble recorded 25 points and three assists, and freshman Diamond Stone had 16 points and a career-high nine rebounds off the bench as No. 6 Maryland held off Connecticut 77-66 on Tuesday in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Trimble made 14 of 15 free throws and the Terrapins (8-1) made 23 of 29 from the foul line.

The Huskies were paced by forward Daniel Hamilton, who scored 23 points - including a 3-pointer with 2:46 left that trimmed what was a 20-point Maryland lead to 67-64.

The Terrapins (8-1) prevailed in front of a heavily pro-Huskies crowd and got a big lift from forward Robert Carter, who had eight points and 11 rebounds.

Connecticut (5-3) struggled from the field, making 25 of 59 field-goal attempts.

No. 10 Virginia 70, No. 14 West Virginia 54

Anthony Gill recorded 20 points and 12 rebounds to lead No. 10 Virginia to a 70-54 victory over No. 14 West Virginia in the Jimmy V Classic in New York.

London Perrantes returned after missing two games (appendix) and scored all 13 of his points after halftime as the Cavaliers (8-1) prevailed in the first regular-season meeting with the Mountaineers since 1976.

Jaysean Paige scored 16 points for West Virginia (7-1), which made only 40 percent of its field goals and was 2 of 14 from 3-point range in the second half.

No. 12 Xavier 90, Wright State 55

Trevon Bluiett recorded his third double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Myles Davis added 13 points to lift No. 12 Xavier to a 90-55 victory over Wright State in Cincinnati.

The Musketeers improved to 9-0 for the first time under coach Chris Mack and for the first time since 2008. It was an impressive tune up for Xavier, which hosts crosstown rival and No. 23 Cincinnati on Saturday.

J.P. Macura added 12 points for the Musketeers.

No. 16 Baylor 75, Northwestern State 62

Rico Gathers recorded 31 points and 21 rebounds as No. 16 Baylor came on strong in the second half to put away Northwestern State 75-62 in Waco, Texas.

Al Freeman pitched in 15 points for the Bears (7-1), who outrebounded the Demons 47-18. Gathers had 18 points and 10 rebounds by halftime, but the Bears led by just one point at the break.

Zeek Woodley scored 21 points for Northwestern State (1-7).

No. 17 Miami 66, Florida 55

Sheldon McClellan scored 24 points and Angel Rodriquez added 16 to lead No. 17 Miami to a 66-55 victory over Florida in Coral Gables, Fla.

The Hurricanes (8-1) led for all but a brief moment when the Gators (6-2) took a 6-5 lead in the opening minutes but didn't pull away until the final seven minutes.

John Egbunu led Florida with 14 points. Dorian Finney-Smith scored 12 points and Devon Robinson chipped in 11 for the Gators.

No. 19 SMU 82, Michigan 58

Jordan Tolbert scored 23 points as No. 19 SMU overpowered Michigan 82-58 in University Park, Texas.

Tolbert made 11 of 12 shots, nearly all of them on alley-oop dunks, as the Mustangs (7-0) outrebounded the Wolverines 45-20.

Tolbert came off the bench 55 seconds into the game to replace preseason All-American Athletic Conference forward Markus Kennedy, who suffered a left ankle sprain and did not return.

Caris LeVert, who was averaging 19.3 points per game, was held to five points on 1 of 13 shooting for Michigan (6-3).

No. 20 Gonzaga 61, Montana 58

Kyle Wiltjer and Domantas Sabonis scored 16 points apiece to carry No. 20 Gonzaga to a 61-58 non-conference victory over Montana in Spokane, Wash.

Wiltjer sank two free throws with 7.5 seconds left to complete the scoring. A 3-point attempt by Grizzlies guard Brandon Gfeller bounced off the front rim as time expired.

Sabonis had 10 rebounds and Wiltjer nine for the Bulldogs (6-2). Martin Breunig led Montana (3-4) with 20 points, 18 coming after halftime.

Gonzaga center Przemek Karnowski was sidelined for the third consecutive game because of back problems.

UNLV invades Wichita State
December 9, 2015

UNLV RUNNIN’ REBELS (7-1) at WICHITA STATE SHOCKERS (3-4)

Charles Koch Arena – Wichita, KS
Tip-off: Wednesday, 9:00 p.m. ET
Sportsbook.ag Line: Wichita St -4

UNLV visits Wichita State on Wednesday night, looking to snap the Shockers’ 34 game home winning streak in a Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge game.

The renewal of the Mountain West-Missouri Valley Challenge has been kind to the Mountain West, as UNLV looks to give their conference a third straight win, pushing the overall record to 5-2 for the MWC. The challenge has been restarted this season after an initial four year agreement between the two conferences (from 2009-2012). Preseason No. 10 Wichita State hasn’t had it easy in the early going, dealing with a bad nagging hamstring injury for star senior G Fred Van Vleet (7.3 PPG, 3.7 APG) limiting him to just 17 minutes per game over his first three games.

The shorthanded Shockers were in bad position to face BCS powers like USC, Iowa and Alabama in the AdvoCare Invitational in Orlando in late November and it showed, as the Shockers dropped all three games (0-3 ATS). VanVleet made his return in Wichita State’s most recent game, a 68-53 win at Saint Louis (Wichita -6), looking sharper in his 18 minutes with 11 points and 7 assists. UNLV is fresh off a big home win over top 25 Oregon last Friday, 80-69 (UNLV +2). The Runnin’ Rebels only have one defeat on the season, and that defeat looks better by the day, with the loss coming to UCLA (in Maui) as the Bruins just toppled No. 1 Kentucky.

The Runnin’ Rebels are 4-1 ATS on the year, and this will be UNLV’s first true road game of the season. Wichita State is 1-4 ATS this season, but hasn’t played a home game with a line yet (wins over Emporia State and Charleston Southern by 22 and 25 points, respectively). Over the course of the Shockers’ 34 game streak at Charles Koch Arena, Wichita State is 16-10-2 ATS in that span, with their last home loss being Feb. 27th, 2013 versus conference foe, Evansville. Coach Gregg Marshall’s squad hasn’t lost a home non-conference game since Nov. 25th, 2011 (UAB), but will not only welcome UNLV on Wednesday but will play host to 7-1 Utah later this week. While VanVleet looks to be good to go for Wednesday’s game, Shockers’ F Anton Grady (9 PPG, 6 RPG) will likely miss his third game due to a concussion he suffered in Orlando against Alabama.

With two wins over top 25 teams on their resume (Oregon and Indiana, who has since dropped out of the rankings) Coach Dave Rice’s young Runnin’ Rebels should be riding high coming into this road game. Surely, however, Coach Rice has informed them of how tough it is to win in Charles Koch Arena, which is most likely why UNLV is still an underdog despite their record. UNLV is catching Wichita State at possibly it’s most vulnerable time in recent memory under Coach Gregg Marshall, and has size and athleticism that the Shockers’ Missouri Valley Conference cohorts can’t match.

It all starts with G Patrick McCaw (18.4 PPG, 46% 3PT), who won’t be the most heralded shooting guard in this game, but will most likely match up head-to-head with Shockers’ star Ron Baker and look to make a name for himself. At 6’7”, McCaw has the size, and defensive instincts (3.1 SPG) to give Baker lots of problems. McCaw’s backcourt mate, senior G Jerome Seagears (12.1 PPG, 4.4 APG) got himself back into the fold with a bang in the win versus Oregon with 16 points after missing the previous game with illness. Seagears versus VanVleet will prove to be a compelling undercard in the backcourt, as a not-100% VanVleet could have issues with Seagears, a Rutgers transfer.

Any injury concerns coach Rice had with star freshman F Stephen Zimmerman Jr. (10.3 PPG, 9.1 RPG, 2.3 BPG) were put to rest by Zimmerman Jr’s 12 point, 12 rebound double-double in the win over Oregon. Zimmerman Jr. played 34 minutes and was aggressive from the field, taking a season-high 14 shots, while blocking 4 shots on defense. UNLV will also be in great shape if they get another great performance from G Ike Nwamu (8.6 PPG) who lit up Oregon for a season-high 19 points (7-9 FG, 5-7 3PT). Nwamu has switched off having good games and terrible ones, something coach Rice hopes doesn’t continue on trend for Wednesday evening (all 14 of Nwamu’s threes have come in four games).

A mostly-healthy VanVleet, seemingly over the hump with a lingering hamstring injury, is just the sight that the faithful in Wichita needed to see during the win at Saint Louis on Saturday. In VanVleet’s absence, G Ron Baker (17.4 PPG, 39.6 3PT) has carried the offensive load, as the next highest (active) scorer on Wichita State is F Markis McDuffie (7.7 PPG). Having to assume playmaking duties in Orlando hampered Baker’s efficiency as he committed four turnovers each against USC and Iowa, while shooting only 14-41 for the three game tournament.

With VanVleet back, Baker was able to shoot a solid 6-10 on the way to 14 points against Saint Louis. Wichita State has struggled mightily on the glass without Grady, their best interior player, grabbing 30 and 27 rebounds respectively in the two games he’s been out. Baker and F Rashard Kelly (4 PPG, 4.1 RPG) lead the team in rebounding after Grady’s six per game. Coach Marshall will have to rely on his trademark defensive pressure and deep rotation (8 players averaging 10+ minutes per game – not counting Grady and injured freshman F Landry Shamet).

Sophomore F Zach Brown (5.9 PPG), while not a rebounding threat, has stepped in to replace Grady’s offensive production, scoring 14 and 10 points in extended playing time over the last two contests. 6’7” 250 lb F Shaquille Morris (5.5 PPG, 2.5 RPG) will also need to contribute as he did against Saint Louis (12 points, 6-7 FG, 6 rebounds) in a starting role.

Preview: Eagles (3-5) at Friars (8-1)
Date: December 09, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Facing arguably the best point guard in the country is a tough enough proposition for rebuilding Boston College.

Doing so with half the team battling the effects of food poisoning just adds to the degree of difficulty for the Eagles as they make the trip down I-95 to face Kris Dunn and Providence on Wednesday night.

Eight Eagles players are contending with food poisoning as part of a group that affected at least 30 students who ate at a Chipotle restaurant near campus. It's unknown if the illness is part of a nationwide E. coli outbreak connected to the Denver-based restaurant chain, but the ordeal has already affected Boston College (3-5).

On Sunday, a short-handed and weakened BC team - playing without ill leading rebounder Dennis Clifford and leading scorer Eli Carter, who suffered an ankle injury before the game - lost 68-66 at home to Massachusetts-Lowell.

Jerome Robinson was able to play through his sickness to score 16 points, but the Eagles lost their fifth straight.

'I got a call from two guys at 6:30 in the morning that they had food poisoning,' coach Jim Christian said. 'Eli Carter got hurt in the walk-through today. All that being said, we had the game in hand and we just didn't make plays.'

Christian was unable to hold practice Monday as the bug persisted among his players, though the prospect of facing Dunn might make the coach queasy as well.

The 6-foot-4 redshirt junior is among the top 10 in the country in assists (7.3) and steals (3.6) per game and second in the Big East with 18.2 points. He's also averaging 6.4 rebounds and has a 2.44-to-1 assists-to-turnover ratio.

Dunn struggled somewhat Saturday at Rhode Island, committing six of his team's 11 turnovers, but got some help from Ben Bentil. The forward followed Dunn's missed layup as time expired to give 15th-ranked Providence (8-1) a 74-72 victory.

While Dunn has been collecting national accolades all season, Bentil has emerged as Providence's go-to player in the paint. The sophomore has scored at least 20 points in his last six games and is right behind Dunn at 18.1 a contest. He's also pulling down a team-best 7.1 rebounds.

'He's improved a lot and has been one of the best forwards in the country that we've seen on film,' Rhode Island coach Dan Hurley said. 'He's a strong player. Obviously, a guy like Kris Dunn takes a lot of pressure off everyone and puts guys in great spots.'

The Friars jumped eight places in the Top 25 for their highest spot since garnering a No. 12 ranking March 1, 2004.

The former Big East opponents have maintained their rivalry on an annual basis since Boston College joined the ACC in 2006. The Eagles have won five of those nine games, including a 69-60 home win last season despite Dunn finishing with 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting and adding six assists and four steals.

Preview: Hawks (1-7) at Spartans (9-0)
Date: December 09, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

Being ranked No. 1 for now six weeks over the course of 20 years as Michigan State's coach probably isn't the first thing Tom Izzo would list on his resume.

That's not just because it doesn't seem all that impressive, but also because his teams have reached the Final Four seven times, and his only national championship came in a season the Spartans never held the top ranking.

Simply put, he's not putting too much stock into Michigan State being the top-ranked team heading into Wednesday night's visit from Maryland-Eastern Shore.

The Spartans (9-0) are off to their best start since winning their first 12 in 2000-01 - when they were No. 1 for two weeks - have victories over ranked foes Kansas, Louisville and dealt current No. 15 Providence its only loss. Four of their wins have been at neutral sites, three coming in California en route to the DirecTV Wooden Legacy title.

Izzo has been impressed with how his squad has handled the success, but he also realizes that being voted the nation's top team this early doesn't mean much when considering long-term goals.

The last time the Spartans were ranked No. 1 in 2013-14, they lost at home to an unranked North Carolina team and fell from the top spot after three weeks. The ascended from the No. 3 spot this time after Kentucky and Maryland both lost.

"Do I think we're the best team in the country right now? No, I don't," Izzo said. "Do I think there's anyone head and shoulders better than us? No, I don't. What I hope my team does is appreciate the work we put in getting where we are and building on it."

He also explained that Michigan State's biggest asset isn't its talent, but how well his players are working as a unit. The Spartans are assisting on 78.7 percent of their baskets to lead the nation, and Denzel Valentine is averaging 7.9 assists to rank fourth in the country.

Valentine also is pouring in 19.7 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. Bryn Forbes has been a nice complement, averaging 17.3 points over his last three and shooting 49.0 percent from 3-point range on the season.

"We've got the best chemistry that's as good as anyone in the country, and I feel comfortable saying that," Izzo said. "I'm a lucky coach right now, but one loss and that can change. Losses are the ultimate adversity."

It doesn't appear the Spartans will suffer their first defeat in this contest. Maryland-Eastern Shore enters at 1-7 with an 0-2 mark in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference play after falling 80-74 to North Carolina A&T on Monday.

Devin Martin finished with 14 points, and Dominique Elliott added 13 and 11 rebounds.

MESU has been outrebounded five times, and it will be in for a tough test in trying to keep Michigan State off the boards. The Spartans rank third in the nation with a plus-17.6 rebound differential per game.

Michigan State's top ranking likely won't be threatened much in this contest, but that could change Saturday when Florida comes to East Lansing. The 2000 national championship team which defeated the Gators in the NCAA Tournament title game will be honored during that game, an event Izzo hopes serves as a message to his team that the No. 1 spot means nothing unless Spartans live up to it.

"I still think we have a lot of room to grow," Izzo said. "I'm looking forward now to can we get better instead of maybe plateauing."

Preview: Colonels (7-2) at Wildcats (7-1)
Date: December 09, 2015 7:00 PM EDT

(AP) - Kentucky coach John Calipari cautioned anyone who would listen that all the talent possessed by his latest freshman class would mean nothing if they didn't also show a little toughness.

If he was having trouble getting his team's attention, he's not anymore.

The then-No. 1 Wildcats showed none of that needed grit in an 87-77 loss at UCLA on Thursday, a game in which Calipari's concerns about his team's resolve painfully unfolded in Kentucky's first regular-season loss in nearly 21 months.

'We got kicked, we got beat, we move on,' Calipari said. 'We've had a pretty good run, and we'll see if we can get it going again.'

No. 5 Kentucky (7-1) had some time off to find some of that missing fortitude before Wednesday night's visit from Eastern Kentucky (7-2).

Against the Bruins, the Wildcats shot 37.9 percent, were edged 38-37 on the boards and looked lost for the most part in the school's first visit to Pauley Pavilion. Calipari's hope was that the Wildcats remember that empty feeling they had during the five-hour overnight flight home and learn from it.

'We have a couple of guys not fighting right now, but we're going to get there. It's early in the season,' said sophomore guard Tyler Ulis, who played with a wrap on his injured right elbow.

Though three-quarters of the season remains for Kentucky, upcoming nonconference games this month against Arizona State, Ohio State and archrival Louisville adds some urgency to getting problems corrected. Not that Calipari expects neighboring EKU to be a cakewalk after his Wildcats led for just 30 seconds against the Bruins.

Then there is the questionable status of 6-foot-9 junior forward Marcus Lee, who left the game against UCLA with a head injury about 4 1/2 minutes in and did not return.

Without their leading rebounder, things went downhill against UCLA, which led by as many as 15 points.

Much-heralded freshman Skal Labissiere drew the most scrutiny after contributing just six points, one rebound and four fouls.

The 6-10 Haitian's seeming reluctance to get physical against the Bruins even drew a push from the 5-9 Ulis in an effort to get him more involved.

'We've got to stay on him,' Ulis said of Labissiere while downplaying the shove as a heat-of-the-moment reaction. 'I pushed him or whatever to get him to get the rebound, but at the same time I told him `you're good, it's OK.''

Freshman guards Isaiah Briscoe and Jamal Murray provided some bright spots with 20 and 17 points while junior forward Derek Willis added 11 points and six rebounds. But Willis and Alex Poythress also fouled out and several others had at least three fouls, which Calipari hoped would offer another lesson for his youngsters.

The coach also pointed the finger inward after Kentucky's first regular-season loss since March 8, 2014 at Florida. Calipari said he was outcoached by UCLA counterpart Steve Alford for setting a slower, physical pace that took Kentucky out of its rhythm.

But what really bothered Calipari was that the Wildcats didn't counterpunch, which needs to change.

'We have to be tougher than the people we're playing,' he said, 'and if you don't understand that, then we've got to figure it out.'

The Wildcats weren't challenged by the Colonels last December, winning 82-49 at Rupp Arena in the teams' first meeting since 2006.

Eastern Kentucky enters this matchup coming off its first road win, 74-71 over Savannah State on Saturday despite shooting a season-low 37.5 percent. The Colonels, though, went 24 of 27 from the free-throw line.

Rhode Island transfer Jarelle Reischel sank 17 of 18 foul shots and scored 24 while adding 12 rebounds and eight assists. He leads EKU with 19.7 points and 8.2 boards per game.

Colonels first-year coach Dan McHale was a student manager at Kentucky from 1998-2001.

Preview: Flyers (6-1) at Commodores (6-2)
Date: December 09, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

Dayton won't be intimidated by facing an SEC opponent next, though going on the road will be a new experience.

The Flyers can start 7-1 for the third straight season Wednesday night when they try to hand No. 21 Vanderbilt its first home loss.

Dayton has taken 11 of its last 14 games against SEC foes, crushing Alabama 80-48 on Nov. 17 in its lone such contest this season. Last season, the Flyers knocked off Texas A&M and Mississippi, though it fell at Arkansas.

Playing in a hostile environment for Dayton will be different for newcomers Steve McElvene and James Madison transfer Charles Cooke. Cooke is averaging a team-high 16.0 points for the Flyers, who have won 26 straight at home.

"It's good for us," coach Archie Miller said. "We're going to be on the road in conference play a lot. This is something that gives us a chance to sort of go on the road and prepare."

Vanderbilt (6-2) has won nine straight at home against nonconference foes, including a 4-0 mark this season.

The Commodores will try to bounce back from Sunday's 69-67 defeat at then-No. 25 Baylor. Wade Baldwin IV scored 19 points as Vanderbilt was undone by allowing 19 points on 20 offensive rebounds despite using three 7-footers in Luke Kornet, Damian Jones and Josh Henderson.

'It felt like pulling teeth the whole night. I felt like I was asking for things the entire night that I wasn't getting,' coach Kevin Stallings said. 'We kind of got what we deserved. We should have won the game, but we didn't deserve to."

The Commodores committed a season-high 17 turnovers. They average 10.5.

"We turned the ball over like crazy and just didn't play like we needed to play," Stallings said.

Jones scored nine points and had six assists after entering with 10 assists in the first seven games. He had a pair of 17-point, 10-rebound efforts in games against Wake Forest and Kansas in the Maui Invitational.

"Jones inside is a load, he's a high-major big guy who can score the ball," Miller said.

Jones figures to match up with the 6-11 McElvene, who scored 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting to go with 16 rebounds in Saturday's 86-71 win over North Florida. Cooke had a season-high 24 points.

Whether McElvene can stay on the court is an issue. He picked up four fouls in 13 scoreless minutes in a 73-70 win over Monmouth on Nov. 27, and fouled out in six scoreless minutes two days later in a 90-61 loss to then-No. 23 Xavier.

When McElvene plays at least 23 minutes, he's averaged 13.0 points on 19-of-25 shooting and 12.0 rebounds. He averages 2.3 points and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 4 of 11 when he fails to reach that mark.

Vanderbilt is allowing opponents to shoot an SEC-best 34.6 percent while Dayton is also solid at 39.6. The Commodores shoot 49.3 percent and Flyers connect at 47.8.

"Getting a chance to watch them a little bit versus Baylor and watching them versus Kansas, and seeing them in Maui, it's certainly one of the best teams in the country so we're going to have to be ready to go and it's going to give us another opportunity to test ourselves," Miller said.

Vanderbilt is 4-0 in the series. These teams last met in 2005-06.

Preview: Bulldogs (6-2) at Wildcats (7-1)
Date: December 09, 2015 9:00 PM EDT

Arizona responded in the wake of adversity with an impressive road victory, though coach Sean Miller insists his squad still has plenty of work to do on its homestand.

As they continue to adjust without Kaleb Tarczewski, the 13th-ranked Wildcats will try to extend the nation's longest home winning streak to 43 on Wednesday night against Fresno State.

Tarczewski averaged 8.6 points and was second on the team with 7.2 rebounds per game before going down in the Wooden Legacy tournament opener against Santa Clara on Nov. 26. Arizona learned prior to Saturday's test at then-No. 13 Gonzaga that the 7-foot center would miss at least four weeks with a stress reaction and strained muscle in his foot.

After suffering a 69-65 loss to Providence in their first game without the four-year starter, the Wildcats (7-1) bounced back with wins over Boise State and Gonzaga.

Gabe York stepped up by scoring 14 of his 18 points in the second half Saturday, Allonzo Trier added 14 and Ryan Anderson had 13 as Arizona overcame a 10-point halftime deficit.

Arizona became the first nonconference opponent to win in Spokane since 2012 and handed the Bulldogs only their 13th home loss since the McCarthey Athletic Center opened in 2004.

"The fact that we played up here, I think will make us more battle-tested for our own conference," Miller said. "I hope that it gives us a confidence boost at a really crucial time because when you lose a key player, it doesn't always go smooth right away."

Miller's club now opens a five-game homestand before traveling to rival Arizona State in the Pac-12 opener Jan. 3. The Wildcats haven't lost in Tucson since a 77-69 loss to California on Feb. 10, 2013, and haven't dropped a nonconference contest there since a 65-54 loss to Bucknell on March 14, 2012.

"I think that we have to be careful because we're playing Fresno State and we still have a lot of work to do," Miller said. "But I think that (the Gonzaga trip) is something for us to build on in many, many ways."

The Bulldogs (6-2) look to regroup after dropping their last two games against Division I opponents. They shot a season-worst 34.8 percent in Saturday's 77-65 loss at Cal Poly.

Cezar Guerrero finished with 15 points and Torren Jones added 13, but Marvelle Harris had 12 on 5-of-20 shooting - including 1 for 10 from 3-point range. The Mountain West Conference preseason player of the year entered the contest averaging a team-high 20.0 points.

"We've got to spend more time in the gym working on our shooting," coach Rodney Terry told the team's official website.

It isn't going to be much easier against an Arizona team that ranks first among Pac-12 teams in defensive scoring (62.9) and second in defensive 3-point percentage (29.1). The Wildcats limited Gonzaga to 1 of 13 from the floor over the final 11:25.

Fresno State has struggled defensively, allowing 75.7 points per game over its last three. The Bulldogs gave up their highest field-goal percentage (50.0) of the season Saturday.

Arizona evened this all-time series at 3-3 with a 69-50 home win in December 2007.

Fresno State has dropped 17 straight games against ranked opponents dating to February 2002 but challenged a Pac-12 team on the road in its only one this season. The Bulldogs lost 78-73 at then-No. 15 Oregon on Nov. 30 after trailing by as many as 19 in the second half, when Harris scored all 18 of his points.

**********

Armadillo: Thursday's List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud.......

13) Why is Steph Curry such a great shooter? He works his ass off, thats why. He says he makes between 200-350 shots every day during the season and probably a lot more in the offseason. He once made 77 3-pointers in a row at a practice. You aren't born that way; if more players practiced this much, they'd shoot a lot better.

12) Cool trivia; Don Sutton is in baseball's Hall of Fame; his career record in the majors was 324-256. Turns out he lost one game in high school; the opposing pitcher in his one loss was Kenny Stabler, the great Raiders' quarterback.

11) I was in a deli for a sandwich earlier this week; guy at the register has the biggest arms I've ever seen, like one of the WWE wrestlers on TV. Turns out the guy is a pro bodybuilder but apparently there isn't a whole lot of money in that. Go figure.

10) Orioles offered Chris Davis a 7-year deal for $150M; how on God's green earth does he turn that down? Apparently Davis wants eight years, $200M. Granted, he hit 47 HRs with 117 RBI LY but that was playing half his games in Baltimore's closet of a ballpark. His numbers would go down most anywhere else. Just take the money.

9) Heisman Trophy is one of the most overrated things on earth; in what other sport is the Player of the Year award talked about so much?

8) Five years ago, Conference USA was the #8 basketball league in America; now, it is the #22 league, as the football maneuvering has crippled the basketball part. The mid-major leagues that are basketball-only have mostly all passed by C-USA.

7) Was pretty cool seeing Ray Allen, Richard Hamilton at courtside Tuesday nite watching UConn playing Maryland at Madison Square Garden. Those guys made ton of money playing in the NBA, but still took out time to cheer on the alma mater.

6) Paris Hotel is Las Vegas is getting a 10,000 square foot beer garden above Hexx restaurant that will seat up to 500 people. One thing about Las Vegas is places are always being improved/added. If you like to eat/drink, Vegas is where to go.

5) I think the NFL makes a mistake fining players for celebration penalties; I don't think it is a deterrent. My suggestion is to still throw flags for celebrations but get rid of the fines- it gives the media too easy a chance to rip the league ("No Fun League"). Let the players act out after they score TDs, let the coaches police things after player gets a penalty for being a selfish human.

4) If the Browns fire Mike Pettine this winter, they'll have their sixth head coach in nine years next season- this is no way to run a business, especially one worth close to $1B, thats billion with a B. Hire a coach, give him five years to run his program and recruit free agents-- things couldn't be worse than they are in Cleveland right now.

3) SMU has a good basketball team; they pounded Michigan by 24 the other night, but the Mustangs aren't going to the postseason this year because they committed academic fraud. Larry Brown was out of college coaching for 25 years, mostly because he put his last school (Kansas) on probation too. Hmmm....

2) Not only does Big X play a 9-game conference football schedule, now they're going to have to play at least one other Power 5 game every year. My guess is the phones at Vanderbilt, Purdue and Wake Forest are going to be ringing off the hook soon, since they're the perennial doormats in the other Power 5 leagues. .

1) I'm genuinely concerned that if Donald Trump became President, we would have a civil war in this country; you can't have a leader who openly insults more than half the citizens. Part of me thinks he is saying outrageous stuff on purpose so he will lose, but no matter what he does, he doesn't drop in the polls. Weird thing.

No matter what, some day all this is going to make one hell of a movie.

Three college football bowl bets you shouldn't wait on

Utah currently stands as a 2.5-point favorite over BYU and most books still have that line. But a few have gone to -3 already.

Las Vegas Bowl: Utah Utes (-2.5) vs. BYU Cougars

Utah currently stands as a 2.5-point favorite over BYU and most books still have that line. But a few have gone to -3 already. I expect this line to hit the key number of three at the majority of sportsbooks, so shrewd bettors should jump on this game now.

Brigham Young is losing head coach Bronco Mendenhall to Virginia, but he will coach the Cougars in this game. However, that's a tricky situation, especially for the players who will be returning to BYU next season. They may tune Mendenhall out, and the distraction is enough to make BYU a fragile team. Utah has no such issues, and they'll come with their best effort against an in-state rival. Bettors should play this game now and take the best of the number.

New Mexico Bowl: New Mexico Lobos (+10) vs. Arizona Wildcats

This line briefly came out with Arizona as a -12.5 to -13 point favorite over New Mexico, but it quickly settled on the current line of -10. This line should eventually tick down below the key number of 10 at some point, so bettors should get on this game now.

New Mexico is essentially playing a home game. The Lobos went 5-2 SU at home this season with one of those losses only coming by seven points. Arizona went 2-4 SU on the road with one of its wins coming by seven points. The Wildcats went 1-4 SU down the stretch while the Lobos went 3-2 SU over their last five games. Take New Mexico now before the line goes lower.

Hawaii Bowl: Cincinnati Bearcats vs. San Diego State Aztecs (N/A)

Cincinnati and San Diego State are complete opposites. The Bearcats have a potent offense and a terrible defense. Cincinnati likes to throw the ball a lot. They average 373 passing yards per game. The Aztecs run the ball essentially on every play, averaging 48 rushing attempts per game while running for 235 yards per game.

This total, which has yet to hit the board, will be a difficult one for the oddsmakers to set because of the opposite styles of play. Cincinnati is currently a 1.5-point favorite over San Diego State. That indicates that this total may be shaded to the Over just a bit. Cincinnati to the Over and San Diego State to the Under are correlated in this game.
