Stanford's offense hitting on all cylinders
October 20, 2015

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) The same Stanford team that couldn't score to start the season now can't be stopped.

Led by the efficient play from senior quarterback Kevin Hogan, the game-breaking ability from running back Christian McCaffrey and the Cardinal's usual strong offensive line play, No. 10 Stanford has bounced back from a rough start to the season to move into contention for the College Football Playoff at the midpoint.

For a change, a team that dominated with defense in recent years is doing it with a high-powered offense instead. The Cardinal (5-1, 4-0 Pac-12) are averaging 45 points and 492.8 yards per game during their current five-game winning streak for the most productive offensive stretch since Andrew Luck's final season back in 2011.

Few saw that kind of stretch coming when the Cardinal were kept out of the end zone in a 16-6 loss at Northwestern to open the season.

''A lot of teams fold after a loss like that first game and a lot of people were against us and we remember that,'' McCaffrey said. ''That's something that we hold dear to our hearts. So it continued to push us and it will continue to push us because you can't forget where you come from. So, it's definitely a big part of our team.''

It all changed with a flea-flicker from Hogan to Michael Rector in the second quarter of a 31-7 victory over Central Florida in the second game of the season. After scoring no touchdowns on their first 15 full drives of the season, the Cardinal reached the end zone on 30 of their next 49 full drives starting with that play.

McCaffrey has rushed for 720 yards and five touchdowns the past four games and leads the nation with 253 all-purpose yards per game. Hogan has 12 TD passes and is averaging 11.3 yards per attempt the past five games with only two interceptions.

''Just execution,'' Hogan said for the reason for the turnaround. ''We're converting third downs, moving the chains and just big play opportunities. You see Christian have big kickoff returns to set up short drives and then just taking advantage of what's there. We feel like we have a lot of explosive players, so just getting them the ball and letting them do their thing.''

This stretch has included four straight conference wins that have put Stanford at the top of the race in the North and in contention for a playoff berth if the Cardinal keep winning, starting with Saturday's home game against Washington.

Stanford does not have a road game remaining against a team with a winning record, with the toughest tests likely coming in the final two weeks at home against No. 20 California and No. 11 Notre Dame. Then comes the conference championship game with a possible meeting with No. 3 Utah.

Coach David Shaw credits the turnaround to the Cardinal just staying the course and not panicking following the slow start. In an era of spread offenses and fast-paced, no-huddle attacks, Stanford keeps doing things in a more traditional way with power running, multiple tight ends and taking deep shots off of play action.

''We have won a lot of football games here playing the right way, playing smart football, playing good football, and it's hard for the outside world to understand it,'' Shaw said. ''Sometimes you don't play well.''

They have done that consistently under Shaw and former coach Jim Harbaugh. Only four Power Five teams have more wins the past seven seasons than Stanford's 67 victories: Alabama, Ohio State, Oregon and Florida State.

''We said, we know what we're doing, we trust our scheme, we trust our guys, we just went back to playing football and having fun doing it,'' Shaw said. ''I commend the guys for having the maturity.''

Memphis at Tulsa
October 21, 2015

**Memphis at Tulsa**

-- Memphis (6-0 straight up, 3-2-1 against the spread) is coming off one of the biggest wins in school history after knocking off Ole Miss on Saturday at the Liberty Bowl. The Tigers remained unbeaten with a 37-24 win over the Rebels as 10.5-point home underdogs. Paxton Lynch completed 39-of-53 passes for 384 yards and three touchdowns. Anthony Miller had 10 receptions for 132 yards and one TD, while Mose Frazier hauled in eight catches for 83 yards and one TD. Dion Witty and Arthur Maulet collected interceptions off of Chad Kelly.

-- Lynch is enjoying a sensational season, throwing for 305 yards or more in five consecutive games. The 6-7, 245-pound senior has connected on 71.4 percent of his passes for 1,919 yards with a 13/1 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

--Memphis is fifth in the nation in total offense and ninth in passing. The Tigers aren’t one-dimensional, however, rushing for nearly 200 yards per game (196.0 to be exact). Five different players have rushed for more than 100 yards this year led by Jarvis Cooper, a sophomore RB who has run for a team-high 320 yards and four TD while averaging 4.8 yards per carry. Junior RB Sam Craft has rushed for 219 yards and five TDs.

-- Coming off the huge win over an SEC team and a regional rival (Ole Miss is 45 minutes from Memphis) that has thrust it into the national spotlight, Memphis enters a classic letdown spot for Friday’s AAC showdown. The short week of preparation and road assignment make this an especially tough spot for the Tigers, who now have to be considered a potential darkhorse to get to the College Football Playoff. Now obviously, Justin Fuente’s team will have to handle its business and get some help for that notion to become a reality. But make no mistake, it’s a possibility. For starters, Memphis will need Ole Miss to play outstanding football down the stretch. In fact, it probably needs the Rebels to win the SEC West, but that’s exactly what will happen if they run the table. Also, the Tigers want Bowling Green to keep playing good football and a win or two from Kansas would help the cause, too. Remember, Memphis won 55-23 and 44-41 at KU and Bowling Green in Weeks 2 and 3, respectively. There are still two games against ranked and unbeaten foes remaining with road games at Houston and Temple next month. Also, the Tigers face a 4-1 Navy squad in two weeks, so there are quality wins remaining on the schedule.

-- Tulsa (3-3 SU, 3-2-1 ATS) has lost three of its last four games, including Saturday’s 30-17 loss at East Carolina as a 14-point underdog. This was a wild affair for our purposes. ECU went ahead of the number for the first time when it took a 17-0 lead with 5:50 left in the second quarter. With 1:13 left until halftime, the Pirates tacked on a field goal for a 20-0 advantage at intermission. Tulsa finally got on the board thanks to a Zack Langer one-yard TD run early in the fourth quarter. With 7:12 remaining, Redford Jones’s 21-yard field goal put Golden Hurricanes supporters back in front (23-10). When ECU’s James Summers scored on a six-yard TD run with 1:24 left, gamblers on the Pirates appeared to be in business. However, Dane Evans hit Keyarris Garrett with a 47-yard scoring strike with 30 ticks remaining, and Jones’s successful PAT gave Tulsa backers the backdoor cover.

-- Tulsa produced more yardage than ECU by a wide margin (463-382), but a pair of turnovers and three failed fourth-down attempts were a killer. Evans threw for 288 yards and one TD, while Langer rushed for 76 yards and one TD on 18 carries. Josh Atkinson had eight receptions for 136 yards.

-- Evans has completed 59.5 percent of his passes for 2,127 yards with an 11/4 TD-INT ratio. His favorite target is Garrett, who has 45 receptions for 698 yards and two TDs. Atkinson has 36 catches for 576 yards and two TDs, while Langer has rushed for a team-best 596 yards and 11 TDs.

-- Tulsa junior WR Keevan Lucas was lost to a season-ending knee injury in a 38-24 home loss to Houston on Oct. 3. Lucas, who had 26 receptions for 409 yards and a team-high five TDs in the first four games, was a first-team All-AAC selection last year when he had 101 catches for 1,219 yards and 11 TDs. Blake Belcher, a starting offensive tackle, was also lost for the season to a knee injury two weeks ago. RB D’Angelo Brewer, who has run for 362 yards and one TD while averaging 5.7 yards per carry, missed the loss at ECU with an undisclosed injury and was listed as ‘questionable’ for Memphis as of early Wednesday afternoon.

-- Memphis has been a road ‘chalk’ seven times on Fuente’s watch, compiling a 4-3-1 spread record.

-- Tulsa owns a 3-1 ATS record in four games as an underdog this year. However, the Golden Hurricane failed to cover in its lone home ‘dog spot this year. Going back to 2010, it is an abysmal 2-6 ATS in the last eight situations as a home puppy.

-- Dating back to last season, Memphis has won 13 consecutive games.

-- As of early Wednesday afternoon, most books had Memphis listed as a 10.5-point favorite with a total of 77. Tulsa was +330 on the money line (risk $100 to win $330).

-- The ‘over’ is 4-2 overall for Memphis, 2-1 in its three previous road assignments. After the ‘over’ cashed in the Tigers’ first four games, but the ‘under’ has been a winner in back-to-back contests. They have seen their games average a combined score of 72.3 points per game.

-- After cashing in three straight games, the ‘under’ is 4-2 overall for Tulsa, 2-1 in its home outings. The Golden Hurricane has seen its games produce average combined scores of 68.2 PPG.

-- ESPN will have the broadcast Friday night at 8:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- There’s also a late-night game Friday to get gamblers warmed up for the weekend. Like Memphis, Utah St. is off a huge win and in a letdown scenario at San Diego State. These Mountain West Conference rivals will collide at 10:30 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. As of early Wednesday, most spots had the Aggies listed as five-point road favorites with a total of 44. Matt Wells’s team crushed Boise St. by a 52-26 count as a 7.5-point home underdog. Utah State created eight turnovers and a 90-yard pick-six by Marwin Evans gave it a 45-10 halftime lead over BSU. Kent Myers threw three TD passes without an interception and also scored on a 39-yard TD scamper.

-- The ‘over’ has hit in four straight games for Utah State.

-- The Westgate SuperBook updates its lines for Games of the Year earlier this week. Ohio State is now a 2.5-point favorite at Michigan in the regular-season finale for both teams.

-- Bovada sent out a tweet earlier this week showing a 12-game parlay from one of its players that netted more than $12,000 with just $10 at risk. Guess who the player had in the parlay? Michigan St. on the money line.

-- Best ATS records: Central Michigan 7-0, Toledo 5-0-1, Notre Dame 6-1, So. Miss 6-1, Stanford 5-1.

-- Worst ATS records: Old Dominion 0-6, UCF 1-6, Michigan State 1-6. UCF and Sparty collected their first spread covers in Week 7.

Temple looks for 1st 7-0 start vs. ECU
October 21, 2015

GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) No. 22 Temple doesn't have much time to savor its first national ranking in 35 years.

The Owls (6-0, 3-0 American Athletic Conference) play their first game as a ranked team since 1979 on Thursday night when they visit East Carolina (4-3, 2-1).

In a half-season already full of milestones, Temple is chasing one more - the first 7-0 start in the history of the once-woebegone program.

''I'm really pleased with our progress, pleased to be where we are and we know it's going to be an unbelievable battle in a really hostile environment on a short week,'' coach Matt Rhule said.

The Owls are acting like they've been here before - even though they haven't, not since the '79 team cracked the Top 25 on its way to the Garden State Bowl.

Quarterback P.J. Walker said it has been ''business as usual.''

''When you've got the guys in the upper class that are not even thinking about all the things in terms of all the success that we had ... everybody's just like, `All right, we're cool, we won that game, let's get to the next game,'' he said. ''I think the young guys are starting to figure it out.''

Maybe that's because they know firsthand just how quickly a team can tumble back into the relative obscurity of not being ranked anymore.

A year ago, East Carolina surged into the polls after a pair of impressive nonconference wins - only to fall out, never to reappear, after losing a road game in league play.

That opponent? Temple.

Yet Pirates coach Ruffin McNeill is downplaying the revenge angle.

''It wasn't luck'' that Temple won last year, he said. ''I talk about getting better. Let's play our best game our next game, but play our best game our last game of the year. Temple has a great team and proposes a great opportunity, but a challenge for us. I talk more about preparation. That's how I'm built and that's what I believe in.''

---

Some things to know about the Temple-East Carolina game:

OLD SCHOOL OWLS:

Temple is winning games on the strength of a ball-control offense and some tough defense. Jahad Thomas leads the American with an average of 126 yards, and scored three touchdowns in last week's win over Central Florida. The Owls have the league's best D, allowing averages of 14.7 points and 295 total yards while intercepting 11 passes.

A GAME OF QUARTERS:

Temple has had only two scoreless quarters all season, and the Owls have outscored their opponents 75-9 in their third quarters. They haven't allowed a second-half touchdown since Sept. 19.

ECU'S TWO QBS:

The Pirates list co-starters at quarterback in Blake Kemp and transfer James Summers. Kemp throws for 222 yards per game while Summers burst onto the scene by rushing for 169 yards and two TDs in a win over Virginia Tech. McNeill says he is pleased with how both have handled the situation, calling it ''really unique.''

KEY STAT:

East Carolina has lost 14 straight games when scoring 20 or fewer points, a streak that started before McNeill arrived in 2010. The Owls have only allowed two opponents to reach the 20-point mark and the last three teams they've faced have combined for just 29 points.

BEATING THE TOP 25:

East Carolina has beaten the last two ranked teams it has faced - both Virginia Tech and North Carolina in 2014 - but this is just the third Top 25 conference opponent it has faced in more than a decade. When the Pirates were in Conference USA, they beat No. 18 Houston in 2009 but lost to No. 24 Southern Mississippi in 2011.

Baylor, TCU, Ok. State head of class
October 21, 2015

Second-ranked Baylor and fourth-ranked TCU have reached the midpoint in the Big 12 Conference with perfect grades in the form of undefeated records.

While the Bears and Horned Frogs are again at the head of the class, as expected after sharing the title last season, 14th-ranked Oklahoma State also has no check marks in the loss column. And No. 17 Oklahoma quickly corrected its unexpected setback with a 55-0 win over Kansas State, the largest shutout in any Big 12 Conference game since 2008.

Their worst loss in 25 years left the Wildcats 0-3 in the Big 12, along with West Virginia and Kansas.

Here are progress reports for every Big 12 team going into the second half of the regular season, when Baylor, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and TCU all go head-to-head in November:

TCU (7-0, 4-0 Big 12):

Playing three of their first four league games on the road, the Frogs survived. Aaron Green had a diving fourth-down TD catch in the final minute at Texas Tech, and they overcame an 18-point halftime deficit at K-State. Heisman contenders Trevone Boykin and Josh Doctson still have to cross the Red River twice to play the Oklahoma teams, but host Baylor the day after Thanksgiving.

BAYLOR (6-0, 3-0):

Again the nation's best offense, Baylor has scored at least 55 points in every game playing one of the softest power-five conference schedules. It builds up to a three-week November stretch when the Bears host Oklahoma, before going to Oklahoma State and TCU. Seth Russell has an FBS-best 27 touchdown passes and Corey Coleman has already set a single-season Baylor record with 16 TD catches.

OKLAHOMA STATE (6-0, 3-0):

The Cowboys still have their stiffest tests ahead of them, though TCU, Baylor and Oklahoma all play in Stillwater. They were undefeated as expected against a weak non-conference schedule, but their three Big 12 wins have been by a combined 12 points.

OKLAHOMA (5-1, 2-1):

Former Texas Tech quarterback transfer Baker Mayfield and new offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley have been a good mix for Oklahoma, along with the emergence of some other receivers to help Sterling Shepard. Cornerbacks Zack Sanchez, the established standout, and rising star Jordan Thomas each have three interceptions. The only loss was to Texas.

TEXAS TECH (5-2, 2-2):

After opening Big 12 play with losses to TCU and Baylor, Texas Tech has since matched its conference win total from a year ago and surpassed its 2014 overall win total. The Red Raiders, who play their first 11 games without a break, still face five teams that beat them last season.

IOWA STATE (2-4, 1-2):

The Cyclones are exactly where most expected them to be, which is bad news for embattled coach Paul Rhoads. Unlike 2014, Iowa State has won a Big 12 game. But since winning their league opener over Kansas, the Cyclones have losses by 35 and 24 points, and now go to Baylor. Iowa State's last winning season was 2009, Rhoads' first in Ames.

TEXAS (2-4, 1-2):

Second-year coach Charlie Strong's team had an enjoyable visit to the State Fair of Texas with a win over Oklahoma before last week's open date. While maybe a program-turning victory, the last Big 12 team to play in a national championship game (six seasons ago) still has a lot of work to do to avoid consecutive losing seasons for the first time since 1988-89.

KANSAS STATE (3-3, 0-3):

Before that lopsided loss at home, the Wildcats had blown halftime leads in back-to-back losses - after winning 49 consecutive games when ahead at the break. A three-week stretch really hard to explain for coach Bill Snyder and his team. K-State won four in a row after their 0-3 league start two years ago.

WEST VIRGINIA (3-3, 0-3):

After winning all its non-conference games, West Virginia has lost three consecutive games against ranked Big 12 teams - and headed to fourth-ranked TCU after an open date this weekend. Quarterback Skyler Howard has eight turnovers in Big 12 play.

KANSAS (0-6, 0-3):

A young team with a first-year coach going through the expected growing pains. After giving Texas Tech a late scare, the Jayhawks play three of their next four games on the road. The home game is against Oklahoma, who has beaten them 10 consecutive times.

SEC depth a question at midway point
October 21, 2015

Halfway through the regular season, a dirty little secret is becoming more obvious to college football fans.

The proud Southeastern Conference doesn't look quite as formidable this fall.

There are still some good teams and talented players: No. 5 LSU and its Heisman Trophy candidate - running back Leonard Fournette, top the list. No. 8 Alabama has its own big back in Derrick Henry and has bounced back after a surprising loss to Mississippi in September.

But the depth around the conference appears to be lacking. The SEC has just five nationally ranked teams after a peak of 10 earlier in the season.

Preseason darling Auburn has been disappointing and Arkansas lost to Toledo. Missouri - the two-time defending Eastern Division champion - is 1-3 in conference play and struggling to score points. Georgia and Ole Miss looked like early contenders, but the Bulldogs have lost two of their past three games and the Rebels were thumped by Memphis on Saturday.

South Carolina has struggled so much that coach Steve Spurrier resigned, Tennessee and Kentucky are inconsistent, Mississippi State is uninspiring and Vanderbilt continues to bumble along in the Eastern Division basement.

Not that anyone in the league is panicking.

''We've got a long way to go, especially with the playoff system,'' Alabama quarterback Jake Coker said. ''Everybody's still alive.''

Maybe not everybody, but Alabama and LSU certainly look like teams that could make some postseason noise. Which one could be decided after they meet on Nov. 7.

It remains to be seen if any other late challengers emerge.

The only team that's legitimately been a pleasant surprise is No. 13 Florida, which lost for the first time on Saturday against LSU but still has a great shot at winning the East. No. 15 Texas A&M is also coming off its first loss - against Alabama - but has big games against Ole Miss and LSU remaining.

---

Here are some of the highlights and lowlights from the first half of the season:

BEST PLAYER:

Fournette. This one really isn't close. Fournette has been unstoppable, featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated and is probably the Heisman Trophy front-runner. He has rushed for 1,202 yards when nobody else in FBS has reached 1,000. He's also second nationally in scoring with 14 touchdowns - two more than Vanderbilt and Missouri have scored, respectively. Runner up: Texas A&M DE Myles Garrett, one of the nation's best pass rushers.

BEST TEAM: LSU.

The Tigers haven't played the most imposing schedule but are coming off a 35-28 win over Florida and are the only remaining unbeaten team in the SEC. The matter should be settled more definitively on Nov. 7 when LSU and the Tide clash at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Runner up: Alabama, which has romped through the past four games since losing to Mississippi.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT:

Auburn. The Tigers opened the season ranked No. 6 and a popular pick to win the SEC. They've looked like anything but contenders this season. Quarterback Jeremy Johnson came in widely mentioned in the Heisman conversation but was benched after dreadful early performances. Runner up: Georgia, which has blown a big lead against Tennessee and been throttled by Alabama after being ranked in the top 10.

BIGGEST MYSTERY:

Ole Miss. The Rebels were once ranked as high as No. 3 after beating the Tide. Since then the Rebels have been routed by Florida and lost to Memphis. Runner up: Arkansas. Once a Top 25 team, the Razorbacks appeared poised for a breakthrough season under coach Bret Bielema. Instead, they have lost four of their last five games.

BIGGEST BLOW:

Georgia losing RB Nick Chubb to a season-ending knee injury. Chubb had been almost a surefire 100-yard runner every Saturday and was averaging 8.1 yards per carry. Runners up: D'haquille Williams/Laremy Tunsil. Auburn booted its talented receiver from the team after multiple suspensions. Tunsil is returning against Texas A&M after serving a seven-game NCAA suspension for receiving illegal benefits.

Pitt thriving on defense under Pat Narduzzi
October 21, 2015

PITTSBURGH (AP) Pat Narduzzi is off to a fast start at Pittsburgh with his aggressive defensive approach.

Halfway through Narduzzi's first season as head coach, the Panthers are ranked for the first time in five years and lead the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coastal Division with a 5-1 record.

No. 25 Pitt's defense is 17th nationally, allowing 300.8 yards per game behind a pass rush that leads the ACC with 22 sacks

''If you're getting tackles for losses and sacks it helps you,'' said Narduzzi, the 2013 Broyles Award winner at Michigan State as the nation's top assistant coach. ''It gets you off the field on third down.''

The Panthers are averaging a conference-best 3.67 sacks.

''Anytime you're sacking the quarterback good things are going to happen for you on the next down,'' Narduzzi said, ''because they're behind the sticks and it makes it a little easier for the play-caller to call a defense.''

Eleven Panthers have at least one sack, led by linebacker Matt Galambos with four.

End Ejuan Price has 3 1/2 and is a player Narduzzi calls ''scary'' when rushing the passer.

Shakir Soto bookends the line with Price and has two sacks. Behind them, outside linebackers Mike Caprara and Nicholas Grigsby each have a pair.

''Inside, we've got a group of tackles that can push the pocket,'' Narduzzi said. ''Our four-man pressure's been good and we've been dialing up some zone pressures that have helped us.''

Tyrique Jarrett is one of those tackles creating pressure on the interior, with 1 1/2 sacks with 5 1/2 tackles for loss this season. He, like many other players, enjoy playing in Narduzzi's simplified system that has allowed many players like himself to excel.

''First of all it's just exciting,'' Jarrett said. ''It's the energy we all bring to the table.''

Center Artie Rowell and the rest of Pitt's offensive line face the energetic pass rush that's dominated on Saturdays daily in practice. He says their visibly-arduous work in the middle of the week translates to success on gamedays.

''They are non-stop,'' Rowell said. ''Our defensive players are soaked from head-to-toe when they come off the practice field.''

Come Saturday, he's glad those defenders wear the same uniform he does.

''They are all over the field,'' Rowell said. ''They're getting pressure on the quarterback.''

And while there is a certain degree of strategy that goes into Pitt's defensive schemes, Jarrett doesn't think there's a secret to the Panthers' success rushing opposing passers.

''I think it's our coaches letting us be us,'' Jarrett said. ''Letting us execute and letting us do what we're good at. There's really nothing to it, it's just us doing what we're doing best.''

No. 20 Cal hopes to flip the script on struggling UCLA
October 21, 2015

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) UCLA has yielded 124 points in its last three games with a defense battered by injuries and frustrated by its ineffectiveness.

And now Jared Goff is headed to the Rose Bowl to try to make things even worse.

The annual UC rivalry game will do a reverse from its recent history when the schools meet again Thursday night. No. 20 California (5-1, 2-1 Pac-12) has the national ranking and conference title hopes, while unranked UCLA (4-2, 1-2) is reeling from two straight losses and clinging to its Pac-12 dreams.

The Bruins have never lost three straight regular-season games in the mostly successful four-year tenure of coach Jim Mora, who revitalized a mediocre program and turned UCLA into a contender. Yet the longtime NFL defensive coordinator has never had this many problems with his defense, which wasn't able to prevent consecutive Pac-12 losses in October for the third straight season.

''The important thing is that you don't rush to the other side of the boat and start taking on water,'' Mora said. ''If you believe in what you are doing, you do it and keep trying to do it better and make improvements.''

While Mora's team is in its October stall, Cal coach Sonny Dykes' rebuilding project is right on schedule, even with a narrow loss at No. 3 Utah in the Golden Bears' last game. With a potent offense led by Goff's powerful arm, the Bears' next win will make them bowl-eligible for the first time since 2011.

Cal has its highest ranking in six years and ample optimism about its trip to the Rose Bowl, where the Bears have won just once since 1999.

''Part of our maturation as a football program is believing that we're good enough to win against good football teams on the road, and especially when we don't play well,'' Dykes said.

Here are some more things to watch in the schools' 86th meeting:

GOFF'S REBOUND:

Cal's stellar starting quarterback threw five interceptions in the loss at Utah, but his response to adversity has impressed coaches on both sidelines. ''Goff, he's pretty darn special,'' Mora said. ''I watched (the Utah game) on TV, so you see his facial expressions. He's thrown (five) interceptions and you would have never known it. As an observer of football, it's been fun to watch him mature. As someone that has to play him on (Thursday), it's not that fun.''

CHASING ROSEN:
Cal's opportunistic defense leads the nation in takeaways, and UCLA freshman quarterback Josh Rosen is still adjusting to the pressures of Pac-12 football. The combination seems ripe for more opportunities for the Golden Bears, but Dykes is wary. ''The thing that has set (Rosen) apart and given him the ability to play as a freshman is his confidence,'' Dykes said. ''He doesn't get rattled very easily. He seems to have gotten through the tough stretches he has had and improved.''

DAY AND NIGHT:

As if UCLA's injuries weren't enough of a challenge, the Bruins' defense now must make a one-game transition from Stanford's straightforward, punishing offense to Cal's passing game. The Cardinal ran the ball mercilessly on UCLA, and Cal likely will attempt to throw against a defense missing Myles Jack and top cover cornerback Fabian Moreau. ''In terms of two different styles of offense, I don't think you can get any more radical than these two,'' Mora said.

PERKINS PREPARATION:

UCLA tailback Paul Perkins is among the Pac-12's best ball-carriers, and the Bears' run defense is eager for redemption after yielding 222 yards and two TDs to Utah's Devontae Booker. ''Playing that game has really prepared us for this game, playing two exceptional good backs in back-to-back weeks,'' Cal safety Stefan McClure said. ''Both of them are kind of similar as far as they run hard. They're fast. Perkins gets to the second level and makes guys miss.''

SUCCESS IN SIGHT:

Cal is beginning a three-game stretch against UCLA, Southern California and Oregon - three expected Pac-12 powers all fallen on hard times this season. Dykes is hopeful that the Bears have the tenacity to cement themselves as a Pac-12 North contender, but understands the difficulties in this stretch are as much mental as physical. ''Respect is earned, and I don't think it's easily earned, at least the kind of respect that you want,'' Dykes said. ''To me, we need to continue to play well to earn people's respect, and I don't have any problem with that at all.''

TOP 25 PICKS: Unbeatens try to avoid upsets; Utah faces USC
October 21, 2015

There are 14 undefeated FBS teams heading into the second half of the college football season. No more than seven can get through championship Saturday that way.

Of those 14 unbeatens, all but one is guaranteed to avoid playing another unbeaten team between now and the College Playoff Football selections on Dec. 6.

That would be No. 3 Utah, the last remaining unbeaten team in the Pac-12. Despite not having to face another team with a perfect record, the Utes road to an undefeated season and a spot in the playoff is anything but smooth.

A major hurdle to clear comes Saturday when Utah goes to Southern California. The Trojans have lost three games and had their coach fired, but as they showed last week at Notre Dame there is no shortage of talent at USC.

In fact, odds-makers favor USC, so don't call it an upset if the Utes fall to Troy.

Speaking of upsets, only one game matches ranked teams this weekend - No. 15 Texas A&M at No. 24 Ole Miss. If the national title race gets a shake, it will be come from somewhere unexpected.

The picks:

THURSDAY NIGHT LIGHTS

No. 20 California (plus 3) at UCLA

Even with two conference losses, Bruins can still hope for a Pac-12 title - but not with three ... UCLA 35-28.

No. 22 Temple (plus 3) at East Carolina

Pirates aren't getting much attention in the American, but they have close losses at Florida and BYU ... EAST CAROLINA 27-20.

Trojans could use a coach like Utah's Kyle Whittingham ... USC 33-27.

No. 15 Texas A&M (plus 5 1-2) at No. 24 Mississippi

After Ole Miss' loss to Memphis, it would probably be in the SEC's best playoff interests to have the Rebels out of the conference title picture ... UPSET SPECIAL, TEXAS A&M 31-29.

TRYING TO STAY UNBEATEN

No. 1 Ohio State (minus 21) at Rutgers

Buckeyes one of two No. 1 teams in New Jersey this weeknd; top-ranked Coastal Carolina of FCS is at Monmouth ... OHIO STATE 45-20.

If you time these college football bets right, you can beat the bookies

The Hurricanes have only been a home underdog five times over the last four seasons and they went 4-1 ATS in those games.

Spread to bet now

Pittsburgh Panthers (-6.5) at Syracuse Orange

This is a tale of two teams heading in opposite directions. Pittsburgh is quietly 5-1 SU on the season with their lone loss coming by just three points on the road at Iowa, which is 7-0 SU on the year. Syracuse has lost three consecutive games after opening the season at 3-0 SU. Their loss last week came in triple-overtime at Virginia after blowing a double-digit lead in the second half, so Syracuse should be hungover from that game.

Pittsburgh is currently a 6.5-point favorite at the majority of sportsbooks. But according to my power ratings, the line is short. I made the game Pittsburgh -10, so I certainly expect this line to go higher throughout the week. Lay the -6.5 now before the line hits the key number of seven.

Spread to wait on

Clemson Tigers at Miami Hurricanes (+6.5)

Clemson was featured in this space last week, and those who took my advice of waiting to back Boston College survived with a push when Clemson won by 17 points. The same thought process applies to this game. Clemson played much better than expected last week off back-to-back big wins, but that only sets the Tigers up to regress even more, especially with this game being on the road.

Miami is 4-2 SU on the season, including a perfect 3-0 at home. The Hurricanes have only been a home underdog five times over the last four seasons; they went 4-1 ATS in those games. My power ratings make Clemson a 5-point favorite in this game, so there will be value on the Hurricanes when the line hits +7. Wait this game out, and grab Miami +7 as soon as that key number pops up.

Total to watch

Washington State Cougars at Arizona Wildcats (72)

Washington State and Arizona match up extremely well for a high-scoring game. The Cougars’ offensive strength is throwing the football. Washington State averages 399 passing yards per game on 7.2 yards per pass attempt. Arizona’s defense allows 7.4 yards per pass attempt, so Washington State holds the edge.

Arizona’s offensive strength is running the football. The Wildcats average 299 rushing yards per game on a whopping 6.6 yards per rush. Washington State’s defense gives up 209 yards on the ground per game on five yards per rush, so Arizona will run the ball at will on the Cougars. The total is 72 right now, and there’s a very good chance this game lands in the 80's

Game of the Day: California at UCLA
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jared Goff and Cal look to avenge a 36-34 loss to UCLA last season.

California Golden Bears at UCLA Bruins (-3.5, 68)

California looks to bounce back from its first loss on Thursday as the 19th-ranked Golden Bears visit injury-plagued UCLA, which has struggled without three defensive starters. The Bruins, who have dropped back-to-back games after opening with four straight wins, spent their bye week searching for ways to slow down a California offense that ranks 12th nationally in scoring at 40.2 points per game.

The Golden Bears have been off since Oct. 10, when quarterback Jared Goff’s Heisman Trophy campaign derailed as the junior threw five interceptions in a 30-24 loss at Utah. Goff is tied for eighth nationally in touchdown passes (17) and is 12th in passing yards (1,970) despite playing behind an offensive line that has allowed 11 sacks in the past three games. He should have more time to throw against a depleted UCLA defense that has lost tackle Eddie Vanderdoes, linebacker Myles Jack and cornerback Fabian Moreau to season-ending injuries. If UCLA is going to avoid its first three-game regular-season losing streak since 2010, the Bruins will likely need freshman quarterback Josh Rosen to keep pace with Goff and the high-powered California offense.

TV: 9 p.m. ET, Thursday, ESPN.

LINE HISTORY: UCLA opened as 4-point home favorites and have come down slightly to sit at -3.5. Meanwhile, the total has been on the rise since opening at 65.5 and now sits at 68.

INJURY REPORT:

California - RB D. Lasco (probable Thursday, hip).

UCLA - OL A. Redmond (probable Thursday, hand), LB D. Hollins (questionable Thursday, knee), RB N. Starks (questionable Thursday, head), OL P. Moala (questionable Thursday, hand), OL C. McDermott (doubtful Thursday, knee), WR T. Scott (out for season, knee).

WEATHER REPORT: It should be a beautiful night for football in Pasadena. It should be a clear night in temperatures in the low 70's at gametime. There will also be a slight six mile per hour wind blowing towards the north endzone.

WHAT CAPPERS SAY: "Both teams enter the game off disappointing losses, the Bears their first of the season and the Bruins off back-to-backs defeats. Cal’s 13–4-1 ATS mark in games off a loss is intriguing but they just had their “bubble burst” and the visiting team is 0-5 ATS. Can’t see UCLA dropping three in a row."

ABOUT CALIFORNIA (5-1, 4-2 ATS, 2-4 O/U): The Golden Bears are seeking to avenge their 36-34 loss to UCLA last season, when Goff threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns, including one to wide receiver Kenny Lawler, who leads this year’s squad with 34 catches, 465 yards and eight TDs. The running game could receive a spark if Daniel Lasco (hip) is available after missing most of the last four games. Defensive end Kyle Kragen (35 tackles and five sacks) heads a unit that ranks first in the nation with 21 turnovers gained but failed to contain Utah’s Devontae Booker, who rushed for 222 yards and two scores.

ABOUT UCLA (4-2, 2-3-1 ATS, 2-4 O/U): Rosen has thrown for 889 yards and seven touchdowns in his last three games, but he’s been sacked five times in the last two and will likely be without starting left tackle Conor McDermott, who is listed as questionable due to a sprained knee. Paul Perkins, who leads UCLA with 681 yards rushing and eight touchdowns, could receive a heavy workload against a California defense that was dominated by Utah’s ground game. Run defense has been a major concern for UCLA, which is allowing 285 rushing yards per game in Pac-12 play after Stanford ran for 310 in last Thursday’s 56-35 win over the Bruins.

TRENDS:

* Home team is 5-0 ATS in their last five meetings.
* Under is 4-1 in the last five meetings.
* California is 1-5-1 ATS in the last seven meetings at UCLA.
* Under is 5-2 in the last seven meetings at UCLA.

CONSENSUS: The public is split almost dead even for this Pac-12 matchup, with 51.03 percent of wagers backing California.

Big profits from betting these NCAAF small-conference teams

The fact that Georgia Southern runs the ball so often, limits possessions by both sides and drains precious time off the clock.

Team to Watch: Georgia Southern Eagles

This week: +6 at Appalachian State Mountaineers

For those who like small-conference teams, this is the marquee matchup on the day between two of the top teams from the Sun Belt. Both teams come into this contest undefeated in conference play. The Eagles are a team that runs a vaunted triple-option ground attack that is incredibly tough for any team to stop. Michael Breida is an absolute beast on the ground and has rushed for over 137 yards in each of his last two contests. On the season, he’s already carried the ball 85 times for an incredible 875 yards and 11 touchdowns.

The Mountaineers are a solid, balanced team and have an above-average run defense, however, it will surely be tested in this contest. The fact that Georgia Southern runs the ball so often, limits possessions by both sides and drains precious time off the clock. This is a decent sized number to lay with Appalachian State if possessions are limited.

Team to beware of: Memphis Tigers

This week: -11 at Tulsa Golden Hurricanes

The Memphis Tigers are coming off arguably the biggest upset in school history as they took down the No. 13 Ole Miss Rebels this past weekend. There was no doubt that that was a trap game for the Rebels and the Tigers took full advantage. The Tigers have a potent offense lead by veteran Paxton Lynch and a highly-underrated defense. Their game against the Rebels was their proverbial “Superbowl” this season and now they may be in for a letdown in their next contest.

The Tulsa Golden Hurricanes aren't a team that many can afford to overlook. While there is something left to be desired in their defense, they are more than capable on the offensive side of the ball. If the Tigers come into this contest still living off their laurels of last week, they could find themselves upended by a very dangerous Tulsa team.

Total team: North Texas Mean Green

This week: 60 at Marshall Thundering Herd

The North Texas Mean Green are complete disarray at the moment on the defensive side of the ball. So far this season, they have given up an average of 50.2 points per game to their opponents. Marshall, on the other hand, is a team that’s starting to find its groove on the offensive side of the ball. Over the last five games, the Herd have scored an average of 34.4 points per game. They will no doubt have a chance to put up much more in this contest.

We don't expect the Mean Green offense to contribute a whole lot to this total as the Herd's defense, especially at home has been quite stout. However, if they can put up double digits in this contest, it's likely that Marshall will be able to shoulder a bulk of the load themselves.

Home team has been the hot bet when Cal and UCLA meet

The home team has gone 4-1 straight up and 5-0 against the spread in the previous five meetings between Pac-12 rivals Cal and UCLA. The pair of California schools will meet at the Rose Bowl Thursday evening.

The Bruins have won back-to-back meetings, including a 36-34 win at Cal last season with the Bears covering as 6.5-point home underdogs.

The previous two meetings at the Rose Bowl have been resounding victories for the Bruins. UCLA won 37-10 as 26.5-point faves in 2013 and 31-14 as 4.5-point home pups in 2011.

Books opened the Bruins as 4-point home favorites for this season's meeting, but that is currently down to -3.5.

TCU LB Freeze leaves team

TCU freshman linebacker Mike Freeze left the team after starting the opener at Minnesota and plans to play elsewhere next season.

"I made some great friends at TCU and I believe our friendships will last forever,” Freeze said via Facebook. "I'd also like to say that I have the utmost respect for Coach (Gary) Patterson. It just turned out that TCU wasn't a good fit for me. I wish the Frogs the best.”

TCU's defense was hit hard by injuries in the first two months of the season and is especially thin at linebacker. Another starter, Sammy Douglas, was lost for the season at Minnesota with a knee injury.

Freeze is not enrolled at TCU at this time but the program has not granted his release from scholarship.
