Saturday’s 6-pack

Single-season NFL record for rushing yards:
2,105— Eric Dickerson, Rams 1984
2,097— Adrian Peterson, Minn 2012
2,066— Jamal Lewis 2003
2,053— Barry Sanders, Det 1997
2,027— Derrick Henry, Tenn 2020
2,008— Terrell Davis, Den 1998

Quote of the Day
“Goaltending is a normal job, sure. How would you like it in your job if every time you made a small mistake, a red light went on over your desk, and 15,000 people stood up and yelled at you?”
Former NHL goalie Jacques Plante

Saturday’s quiz
The ABA folded after the 1975-76 season; which team won the last ABA championship?
(Hint: they beat the Denver Nuggets in six games in the finals)

Friday’s quiz
Jerry Rice holds the all-time NFL record, with 197 receiving TD’s; Randy Moss is #2 on the list, with 156 receiving TD’s.

Thursday’s quiz
Of the 16 NFC teams, three current starting quarterbacks have started a Super Bowl; Matthew Stafford, Jared Goff, Jalen Hurts.

******************************************************************

Saturday’s Den: Wrapping up a busy Friday…….

— Rounds 2-3 of the NFL Draft happened Friday; Kentucky QB Will Levis had a much better night Friday than he did Thursday. Tennessee Titans took him with the 33rd pick, the second pick in the second round- they even traded up to get him.

Titans’ other QB’s are Ryan Tannehill, Malik Willis; one of them figures to go now.

— Tannehill has been in the NFL for 11 years, is 78-65 as an NFL starter, 38-22 in four years with Tennessee, but only 2-3 in playoff games.

If it is Tannehill who moves on, Cincinnati would be a logical destination; he could back up Joe Burrow. Bengals’ coach is Zac Taylor, whose father-in-law is Mike Sherman, Tannehill’s coach at Texas A&M, the guy who switched him from wide receiver to QB.

— In case you were wondering, next year’s draft is in Detroit.

— Speaking of Detroit, the Lions traded up to draft Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker, who is recovering from a torn ACL. Hooker completed 69.6% of his passes for 3,135 yards with 27 TD’s and two interceptions in 11 games last year. He also rushed for 430 yards and five TDs.

Tennessee was 11-2 last year, 6-2 in the SEC, but Hooker is also 25 years old, little more than a year younger than Joe Burrow, who has already played three years in the NFL.

— Detroit already has a very good QB, Jared Goff, who has a 56-48 career record and an NFC title to his credit. Goff is a free agent after the 2024 season; if they let him walk, it would be a colossal mistake.

— 49ers were the last team to make a selection; they wound up making three picks in the third round, including taking a kicker from Michigan. Not often a kicker gets drafted in the 3rd round.

— Indianapolis Colts traded down twice in the second round, to acquire more draft picks for Saturday’s session, which begins in about nine hours. I need to go to sleep soon.

Kings 118, Warriors 99
Monk scored 28 points, was +21 in 32:00 off the bench.
Series is 3-3; Game 7 is Sunday afternoon in Sacramento.

Lakers 125, Grizzlies 85
Lakers advance to second round; they outscored Memphis 66-43 in second half.
Not a stellar effort by the Grizzlies, who went 51-31 this season.

Braves 4, Mets 0— Game was called after five innings; Mets haven’t scored a first-inning run in their last 18 games.

— Atlanta lost 5-4 to the Marlins Thursday, blowing a 4-0 9th inning lead; the Braves had won 648 consecutive games when they led by 4+ runs in the last inning. Last time they lost a home games they led by 4+ runs in the 9th inning? October 2, 1986 against Cincinnati.

Blue Jays 3, Mariners 2— Seattle hasn’t scored a first inning run in its last 14 games; they’re 3-8 in one-run games this season, after going 67-41 in one-run games the last two years.

Rays 3, White Sox 2— Tampa Bay did something unusual Thursday; they used a position player to pitch the 9th inning, when they were WINNING 14-3. Luke Raley pitched the last inning, giving up two runs. You don’t see that every day.

Rangers 5, New York 2— Jacob deGrom tossed 3.2 scoreless innings, but left in the fourth inning because of forearm tightness.

— RIP to Jerry Springer, who passed away this week at age 79; he had pancreatic cancer.

“The Jerry Springer Show” was a big deal in daytime TV; it ran from 1991-2018 and was known for its profanity-prone guests who often had were restrained by security guards as audience members wildly cheered.

Springer was once the mayor of Cincinnati; as a kid, he was a ballboy at the US Tennis Open.

Maybe 10 or so years ago, I was staying at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas; went downstairs to get some food, and on my way back to my room, I crossed paths with Mr Springer, who was interviewing casino guests, with an assistant and his hand-held camera.

I waited until he was done, then I approached him, introduced myself and we talked for a few minutes. He didn’t have to be, but he was polite/nice to me, a good guy. His show was a less athletic version of pro wrestling, but a lot of people liked it.

Jerry Springer was a good guy, at least with me he was. RIP, sir.

Sunday’s 6-pack
Single-season NFL record for field goals made:
44— David Akers, SF 2011
40— Daniel Carlson, LV 2021
40— Neil Rackers, Ariz 2005
39— Jeff Wilkins, Rams 2003
39— Olindo Mare, Mia 1999
39— Robbie Gould, SF 2017

Quote of the Day
“When we’re talking about chemistry, when you have guys who are new and coming in and they’re coming into a new environment, a new city, a new football team, now they know people. They’re not uncertain, they can go to each other and say ‘tell me how this works, tell me about the city, where should I live, where should I go,’ a lot of the things that maybe we take for granted when we’re talking about the draft process. … That enhances the chemistry and the culture of our football team, maybe even gives you a head start on that process a little bit.
Philadelphia Eagles’ GM Howie Roseman

Sunday’s quiz
Who was the Houston Astros’ manager, the first time they won a World Series?

Saturday’s quiz
The ABA folded after the 1975-76 season; the New York Nets won the last ABA championship, beating the Denver Nuggets in six games in the finals.

Friday’s quiz
Jerry Rice holds the all-time NFL record, with 197 receiving TD’s; Randy Moss is #2 on the list, with 156 receiving TD’s.

Sunday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Saturday……..

— There were 43 trades during the NFL Draft, the most ever during a draft; six of them were during Thursday’s first round.

— There were 11 quarterbacks drafted in the first 150 picks, first time since 1995 there were that many QB’s taken that early.

Last year, there was only one QB drafted in the first 73 picks (Kenny Pickett)

— NFC South starting quarterbacks, last year and this year:
Atlanta: Marcus Mariota last year, Desmond Ridder this year
Carolina: Baker Mayfield, Bryce Young
New Orleans: Jameis Winston, Derek Carr
Tampa Bay: Tom Brady, Baker Mayfield

— Eagles drafted three more defensive players from Georgia; over the last two years, they’ve drafted five Dawg defenders.

Ironically, Eagles’ GM Howie Roseman is a Florida Gators’ alum.

— Rams took Georgia QB Stetson Bennett in the 4th round; lot of people didn’t think Bennett would get drafted at all.

— Philadelphia acquired RB D’Andre Swift from Detroit for a 4th-round pick.

— QB Sam Hartman transferred from Wake Forest to Notre Dame, so the previous Notre Dame QB, Tyler Buchner, transferred to Alabama.

This is how weird college sports is now; Hartman started for FIVE YEARS at Wake Forest, but all of a sudden it wasn’t good enough for him, so instead of jumping to the NFL, now he is at Notre Dame. Because of that, Alabama gets a new QB— they’ve got five under scholarship now.

Would be fitting if one of Alabama’s QB’s transferred to Wake Forest, to take Hartman’s place.

— Padres 16, Giants 11— Total on this game in Mexico City was 15.5, the highest total for a big league game in at least 20 years. Elevation at Mexico City is 7,349 feet, 1.39 miles high. Most of the fly balls in this game went over the fence.

— Rays 12, White Sox 3— Lance Lynn no-hit Tampa Bay for six innings, then the Rays scored ten runs in the 7th inning; they’re 23-5, leading the AL East by 4.5 games.

— Pirates 6-16, Nationals 3-1— Last day of April and Pittsburgh is 20-8, in first place in the NL Central. Pirates visit Tampa Bay this week; a World Series preview?

— Arizona 11, Colorado 4— Last day of April and Arizona is in first place in the NL West; it says more about how underachieving the Dodgers/Padres have been so far, but Arizona has gotten better. As for Colorado, they’re awful, not much better than the A’s, who are terrible.

— Dodgers 1, Cardinals 0— Last day of April and St Louis is already ten games out of first place; you read between the lines with their personnel moves and they seem to have internal issues. Cardinals are 1-5 in one-run games; would a quick managerial change help?

— Toronto 1, Seattle 0 (10)— Easton McGee made his first MLB start for Seattle; he didn’t allow a hit until the 7th inning, but the Mariners still lost- they’re 3-9 in one-run games.

— Reds 3, A’s 2— Cincinnati came into this weekend 1-9 on the road, but they were favored in Oakland the last two days and won both games. Reds scored twice in 9th inning to win this game, because the guy the A’s paid $7M to be their closer this year is away from the team, dealing with anxiety issues.

I’m an A’s fan; I have anxiety issues too.

— Denver 125, Phoenix 107 (Nuggets lead series, 1-0)
Nuggets outscored Phoenix 37-19 in second quarter.
Denver was +7 in turnovers.

— Toronto 2, Tampa Bay 1 (OT)— Maple Leafs won a playoff series for the first time since 2004, winning three road games in overtime- this win snapped an 11-game losing streak in elimination games. Lightning was in the Stanley Cup finals the last three years; not this year.

— Arlington 26, Houston 11— Upset in the XFL semi-finals; Renegades’ QB Luis Perez threw for 289 yards, three TD’s. Arlington was a 7.5-point underdog; they outgained Houston 419-225.
