Quote of the Day
“He (his father) didn’t think I could make any money coaching ball. I don’t think my dad ever dreamed, nor did I, that I could coach in college. It never crossed my mind, it was never a goal. I wanted to coach in high school and win a state championship, which is so hard to do.”
Arkansas football coach Sam Pittman

Saturday’s Den: Wrapping up a busy Friday
13) Red Sox 4, Nationals 2:
Angels 2, Mariners 1— Boston leads Seattle by a game for the second Wild Card slot.
12) Giants 3, Padres 0— Giants can clinch NL West with a win Saturday.
Padres are 12-32 in their last 44 games.
11) Virginia 30, Miami 28:
— Miami missed a 33-yard FG at the gun.
— Virginia led 27-14 with 2:00 left in third quarter.
10) Iowa 51, Maryland 14:
— Terps get brought back to earth after a 4-0 start.
— Maryland turned ball over 7 times, throwing six INT’s.
— Iowa had TD drives of 10-26-45 yards.
9) Houston 45, Tulsa 10:
— Cougars led 28-3 at halftime; easy win.
— QB Tune threw for 241 yards, two TD’s.
8) BYU 34, Utah State 20:
— BYU’s 2nd-string QB played first half, 3rd-stringer played second half.
— RB Allgeier ran 22 times for 218 yards, three TD’s.
— Utah State lost despite converting 11-21 on third down.
7) Turner Sports hired former NHL ref Don Koharski as its rules expert for NHL telecasts; long time ago (1988???), when Koharski was a referee, he worked a game where the Buffalo Sabres weren’t too happy with his work.
Sabres’ coach Jim Schoenfeld was caught on camera screaming at Koharski after the game: “Have another donut!!! Have another donut, you fat pig!!!”
To that point, I didn’t know that in Canada, telling someone to have another donut is a big insult.
6) Maui Classic basketball tournament is a staple of Thanksgiving Week, but this year, the Maui Classic is moving to Las Vegas (Mandalay Bay) because of COVID travel issues in Hawai’i.
The field: Butler, Houston, Notre Dame, Oregon, Saint Mary’s, Texas A&M, Wisconsin, Chaminade.
5) Jaguars’ QB Trevor Lawrence had a combined 86-4 W-L record in high school/college; now he is 0-4 in the NFL. Rookie QB’s struggle in the NFL; they’re 2-10 ATS this season.
4) With Cincinnati, Houston, UCF bolting the AAC for the Big X, the AAC tried to replace them with Boise State/San Diego State, but those teams elected to stay in the Mountain West- they are hoping the Big X or Pac-12 come calling instead.
3) Giants’ OF LaMonte Wade has six game-tying or go-ahead hits in the ninth inning this season, the most by any big league player in the last 40 years.
2) 2022 should be an especially fun year in Los Angeles; Super Bowl in February, All-Star Game in July; I’m guessing most every day is fun in Tinseltown, but next year should be especially good.
1) Astros are fifth team that Dusty Baker has managed, and he’s led all five teams to the playoffs a total of ten times, reaching the World Series with the 2002 Giants. Is this the year Dusty wins a World Series?
Full disclosure: When I was a kid, 15 or 16, I was at Shea Stadium, for a Mets-Braves game; my dad got us GREAT seats (3rd row off the field, by 3rd base). Dusty Baker had a broken wrist; he was signing autographs and he was really cool to talk to, a good person. Have to root for the guy.
