Monday’s 6-pack

Odds to win Big 14 basketball tournament:
+190— Purdue
+320— Illinois
+460— Iowa
+700— Wisconsin
+1200— Ohio State
+1700— Michigan
+2500— Indiana, Michigan State

Quote of the Day
“A little song, a little dance…….a little seltzer down your pants.”
Chuckles the Clown

Monday’s quiz
What was the butler’s name in the old TV show, The Addams Family?

Sunday’s quiz
NC State ended UCLA’s streak of seven consecutive national titles in 1974.

Saturday’s quiz
Warriors’ coach Steve Kerr was born in Lebanon; his father was president of the American University in Beirut, before he was assassinated in 1984.

************************************

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports weekend

13) Welcome to my favorite two weeks of the year, Champ Week and then the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament. Ton of basketball going to be played; this will be our first normal March Madness in three years. Let’s enjoy it.

There is also supposed to be baseball going on, exhibition games that make us feel warmer up here in the northeast, but that ain’t happening yet. Too bad.

12) Loyola 64, Drake 58:
— Ramblers are in NCAA’s for third time in last four tournaments.
— Coach Drew Valentine is youngest (30) D-I coach in America.
— This was Loyola’s last game in the MVC; they move on to the A-14 next year.

11) Longwood 79, Winthrop 58:
— This is Longwood’s 18th year in D-I, only their second winning season,
— Lancers made the D-III Final Four back in 1980.
— This year, Longwood lost by 33 to Iowa, by 8 to Georgetown; they went 18-1 in their league.

10) NBA commish Adam Silver is a Duke alum; he was at the Duke-UNC game Saturday night. They show him on TV and I’m like, “Guy next to him looks a lot like Jerry Seinfeld”

Turns out it actually was Jerry Seinfeld; stands at Duke looked like a freakin’ Laker game, lot of celebrities. Turns out Seinfeld’s son is a freshman at Duke.

9) With rumors that Troy Aikman is jumping from FOX to ESPN’s Monday Night Football, Brian Griese will leave the TV booth and be the 49ers’ QB coach next season.

8) Florida Gulf Coast went 21-11 this season, but they fired their coach after four seasons of not making the NCAA Tournament. The guy went 30-27 in conference play, gets told to take a hike. Florida Gulf Coast cares about their basketball.

Then there is Georgetown, which just went 0-19 in the Big East; sounds like Patrick Ewing will be back on the Hoyas’ sideline next year. Hmmmm…..

In five years under Ewing, Georgetown is 26-60 in Big East play; they did win the conference tournament last year, making the NCAA’s for first time in six years- they lost to Colorado in the first round, 96-73. Ewing was a great player, might not be that good a coach, but he is the best player in Georgetown history.

7) Jacksonville 54, Jacksonville State 51:
— Second round game in the Atlantic Sun tournament.
— Jacksonville is in Florida, Jacksonville State is in Alabama.

Go figure.

6) Nebraska 74, Wisconsin 73:
— Ten days ago, Nebraska was 1-16 in conference play; since then, they’ve won three games in a row, all as double-digit underdogs.
— Wisconsin star Davis played only 12:00, injured by a flagrant foul.

5) Sun Belt tournament:
— Louisiana 66, Troy State 57— Cajuns never trailed, win for third day in a row.
— Georgia State 71, Appalachian State 66— Panthers have won nine games in a row; they’ll be playing for third straight day Monday night.

4) Arizona State QB Jayden Daniels has committed to LSU, as Brian Kelly bolsters his roster via the transfer portal. Daniels played three years at ASU; Sun Devils lost both coordinators this winter, and the NCAA is lurking around the ASU program.

3) When San Diego State-Fresno State play basketball, things get awkward for Fresno coach Justin Hutson; his wife Stacie is the women’s basketball coach at San Diego State. Maybe it is more awkward for her than him.

2) Was stunned to see that when the baseball owners made their proposal to the players’ union last Monday, four owners voted against that offer, but the owners passed it anyway. What got me was that one of the four owners who voted against it was Arte Moreno, the Angels’ owner.

Angels are a big market team: Trout, Ohtani, Rendon; they’re shouting distance from LA and draw very well. If a big market owner like Moreno is a hard liner, we might not see baseball for a while, maybe May at the earliest.

1) In 1985, Phillies’ 3B Mike Schmidt made $2,130,000; he was the highest-paid player in the big leagues that year. Last fall, Juan Soto turned down a 13-year, $360M deal.

Someone is going to have to compromise in baseball’s labor dispute; I’m thinking it should be the players. If you turn down $360M for 13 years, something is screwed up.

Tuesday’s 6-pack

Odds to win Pac-12 basketball tournament:
-135— Arizona
+185— UCLA
+750— USC
+1400— Oregon
+2200— Washington State
+2500— Colorado
+2800— Stanford

Quote of the Day
“There’s no such thing as a sure thing, thats why they call it gambling.”
Oscar Madison, The Odd Couple

Tuesday’s quiz
What was the name of the New York City cop with the big nose who was Felix/Oscar’s friend in The Odd Couple?

Monday’s quiz
Lurch was the butler in the old TV show, The Addams Family.

Sunday’s quiz
NC State ended UCLA’s streak of seven consecutive national titles in 1974.

*********************************

Tuesday’s Den: Nobody asked me, but…….

13) When the Big East was originally formed in 1979, Holy Cross turned down an invitation to join the league, citing the college’s “commitment to academic excellence.”

Whoops.

Holy Cross had good teams back then; they beat Providence twice in 1977; they have a great hoops tradition- Bob Cousy played there.

They cost their athletic department a freakin’ load of money by saying no to the Big East, especially since they also had a decent football program, unlike Villanova-Georgetown-Providence-Seton Hall.

Athletic excellence also helps the school as far as kids wanting to go there and donations by boosters. Holy Cross won the Patriot League four times under Ralph Willard , but since he left in 2009, the Crusaders have made the NCAAs only once.

12) Last two tournaments, Big East hasn’t had a team in the Elite 8; their last Elite 8 team was Villanova in 2018- they won the national title.

Word came out this weekend that if Georgetown fired Patrick Ewing now, they would owe him $12M or so, so he’ll be back next year. Gross incompetence by their AD, to pay a struggling coach that much money.

11) Sun Belt final: Georgia State 80, Louisiana 71:
— Congrats to coach Rob Lanier, who led Siena to the 2002 NCAA Tournament.
— Georgia State has won ten games in a row; they started the season 6-9, 0-4 in Sun Belt play, but boy they’re hot now.

By the way, way back when ESPN first started, the first league that let ESPN air their games a lot was the Sun Belt. Would be nice if ESPN gave the Sun Belt a Game of the Week, maybe a Sunday game or Friday night every week, something to acknowledge how they helped ESPN get off the ground back in the day.

10) SoCon final: Chattanooga 64, Furman 63, OT
— Mocs have seven D-I transfers on their squad; they’ll be dangerous next week.
— Furman was playing for 4th night in row; they were outscored 35-25 in second half.

This wound up being a great game; Furman tied the game on a 3-pointer with 0:04 left to force overtime, but Chattanooga drained a 35-footer at the buzzer in OT to win the game.

Last three coaches to win SoCon tourney moved on to bigger $$$ jobs:
— Mike Young moved from Wofford to Virginia Tech
— Steve Forbes moved from East Tennessee State to Wake Forest.
— Wes Miller moved from NC-Greensboro to Cincinnati.

9) ESPN’s announce team for the SoCon final was Tom Hart/Randolph Childress. Hart is the best play-by-play guy on TV today, whether it is football/basketball. He is smart, prepared, you learn stuff and when he wants to be, he is funny.

Monday, they posted a clip from the 1995 ACC tournament, when Childress/Tim Duncan won the ACC tournament for Wake Forest. Childress didn’t know the clip was coming; you could tell it caught him off-guard, in a good way. Hart has a way of bringing out the best from his analysts.

He used to work SEC hoop games with Andy Kennedy; those two were television gold.

Sunday night, Hart/Childress were talking about teams cutting down the nets after winning a title; Childress said he still has his part of the net that was cut down after the ’95 ACC tournament. He said it is still displayed prominently in his house, which is pretty cool.

8) Murray State won the OVC title over the weekend; since 2009, OVC teams are 9-3-1 ATS in first round NCAA tournament games.

7) Ivy League didn’t play basketball last year; there was no NCAA Tournament two years ago, so this will be Ivy’s first tournament in three years. Ivy teams covered their first round game six of last seven tournaments they played in.

6) Pac-12 hasn’t won a national title in basketball since 1997; they’ve never won one when they had a conference tournament that year.

Was surprised to see that Arizona hasn’t won an NCAA Tournament game since 2017.

5) In 2011, Brad Stevens’ Butler team came from the Horizon League and lost the national title game, a great run; since then, Butler moved on to the A-14, then the Big East and Horizon teams have gone 0-9 in first round tournament games, 2-7 against the spread.

4) Last two NCAA tournaments, Big X teams are only 2-8 in second round games, but both teams that won (Texas Tech in ’19, Baylor LY) played in the national title game.

3) ACC has sagged to the #6 league this year, their worst rank since 2013; ACC teams were 2-5 in the first round of NCAA’s last year. Right now, Joe Lunardi has five ACC teams in the field, but Wake Forest/Miami are bubble teams, so they better win their first ACC tourney game.

2) WCC tournament:
— Gonzaga 81, San Francisco 71— Zags led by 20 at half, looked shaky vs USF’s press.
— Saint Mary’s 75, Santa Clara 72— Gaels led by 15 in 2nd half, hung on for dear life.

1) NFL salary cap next year will be $208.2M, up from $182.5M last year. Teams have to be under the salary cap by 4pm next Wednesday, so lot of guys are going to be released between now and then. Also, lot of contracts will be restructured to create cap space.

“Selling an NFL team is a complex process involving numerous parties and league approval procedures. Nonetheless, the trustees hope to have the sale completed by the start of the 2022 NFL season.”
Denver Broncos CEO Joe Ellis

Wednesday’s quiz
What two colleges did Russell Wilson play football for?

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings………

13) Quite a day for NFL news:
— Aaron Rodgers will stay in Green Bay, will get an enormous contract. It is unclear exactly how enormous, but Rodgers will be 39 next December, and will finish his career in Green Bay.
— Packers also put franchise tag on WR Davante Adams, so their offense is good to go.
— Will Green Bay trade backup QB Jordan Love, who was a 2020 first round pick?

12) Right after the Rodgers news broke, Denver traded five draft picks, two players to Seattle for QB Russell Wilson, who has two years, $56M left on his contract.

Wilson went 113-60-1 in ten years with Seattle, splitting pair of Super Bowls. Denver has started 11 different QB’s the last six years since Peyton Manning retired, but that problem is officially solved now.

Broncos are first NFL team since 2017 to be up for sale; back then, the Carolina Panthers sold for $2.275B. Acquiring Wilson makes the Broncos’ franchise worth more money- they could fetch more than $2.275B.

11) Seahawks coach Pete Carroll will be 71 in September; wonder how he feels about leading a rebuild in Seattle? Unless Seattle uses those draft picks and trades for Deshaun Watson, then it isn’t a rebuild anymore, but they released LB Bobby Wagner too, so………

10) Bellarmine 77, Jacksonville U 72— Weirdness in the Atlantic Sun.
— Bellarmine is in its 2nd year at D-I level; they can’t play in NCAA tournament until 2025.
— Jacksonville STATE won the regular season; they get the ASUN’s automatic bid- this was the Gamecocks’ first year in the ASUN.
— Jacksonville U is in Florida; Jacksonville State is in Alabama.

— Back in 1970, Jacksonville U made the Final Four, lost the national title game; star of that team was 7-foot center Artis Gilmore, who is now the Dolphins’ radio analyst. Gilmore played 17 years in the NBA, scored 24,941 points. Big lefty; tough guy.
— This game was played in Louisville’s Freedom Hall, which was the Kentucky Colonels’ home court back when Gilmore was their center in the ABA from 1971-76.

9) WCC final:
— Gonzaga 81, Saint Mary’s 68— Zags are 39-5 in last 44 WCC tourney games.
— Zags shot 57.7% from floor; they figure to be #1 overall seed in NCAA’s.

8) Horizon final:
— Wright State 72, Northern Kentucky 71:
— NKU led by 16 with with 11:41 left in game.
— Three Raiders played 39 or 40:00; they’re in NCAAs for first time since 2018.

One of the refs for this game was DJ Carstensen; way back when, 1980 or so, Carstensen played basketball at Utica College, which made an ill-fated try to move up from Division III to Division I. Pioneers were coached by Larry Costello, who ten years earlier had been Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s coach with the Milwaukee Bucks.

7) NEC final:
Bryant 70, Wagner 43
— Bulldogs are in NCAA’s for first time.
— Bryant was leading this game 36-6. Thirty-six. to. six.
— Bryant’s best player is a kid named Peter Kiss, who leads the country in scoring; back in the day, he would be called a “hot dog”, a show off. He is playing for his third college in five years. Kiss made 42.2% of his 3’s last year, only 27.8% this year.
— There was a fracas in the stands with 4:37 left in this game; took them 25 minutes to resume the game. Two teams weren’t involved; somehow they let the fans stay in the gym for rest of the game and thankfully, nothing else happened.

6) Summit final:
— South Dakota State 75, North Dakota State 69— Jackrabbits advance to NCAAs for sixth time.
— South Dakota State has won 21 games in row, hasn’t lost since December 15.
— Jackrabbits have now won nine of last ten games in this rivalry.

5) Big West tournament:
— Cal-Bakersfield 58, Cal-Northridge 45— Matadors shot 32.6% from the floor.
— Cal-Davis 63, Cal Poly 53— Aggies play Fullerton Thursday.

4) Quick thought on NFL quarterbacks: the new coach and new GM of the New Jersey Giants come from the Buffalo Bills, where Mitchell Trubisky was the backup QB last year.

Giants are expected to acquire Trubisky; if they don’t want him, why would anyone else want him, seeing how they know him pretty well, and they need a quality QB.

3) Joey Gallo bunted for seven hits last year, most in the major leagues; if MLB bans the shift this season, Gallo won’t have to bunt anymore.

2) Random baseball trivia; Will Clark went 12-36 with six home runs against Nolan Ryan, which I am told is the most home runs any player hit off of Ryan. He also doubled twice, walked three times.

1) There was great news Tuesday; scans on Dick Vitale showed no more cancer; he is considered to be in remission, which is outstanding news for the former coach. The man has raised over $100M to fund cancer research; at age 82, he still has tremendous energy.

Thursday’s 6-pack

Odds to win the PLAYERS Championship this week:
10-1— Jon Rahm
16-1— Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas
20-1— McIlroy, Hovland, Cantlay
25-1— Scottie Scheffler, Hideki Matsuyama
30-1— Schauffle, DJohnson, Berger
35-1— Cam Smith, Matt Fitzpatrick

Quote of the Day
“It was fun, and I’m glad we took advantage of it….… I think we fed off the energy. I was actually surprised, his form, he actually had some good rotation on the ball, and endless energy. I don’t know how.”
Steph Curry, talking about Will Ferrell warming up with the Warriors Tuesday

Thursday’s quiz
When Russell Wilson transferred from NC State to Wisconsin, what future NFL QB took his place at NC State?
(Hint: He is still active in the NFL)

Wednesday’s quiz
Russell Wilson played football for NC State, Wisconsin.

Tuesday’s quiz
Murray Slaughter was the New York City cop with the big nose who was Felix/Oscar’s friend in The Odd Couple.

Thursday’s Den: Doing some thinking out loud…….

13) ACC tournament:
— Virginia Tech 76, Clemson 75, OT— Kid on Tech stuck a 3-pointer at buzzer to win the game.
— Boston College 82, Wake Forest 77, OT— Deacons will have a very long four days, waiting to hear their name on Selection Sunday. Wake led by 10 with 6:05 left.
— Syracuse 96, Florida State 57— Buddy Boeheim sucker-punched a Florida State player, is suspended for Thursday’s game against Duke.

Clemson is only team from original ACC that has never won the ACC tournament; only two times have they won two games in an ACC tournament.

12) Over the last ten years, seven different schools have won the ACC tournament.

11) Big East tournament:
Butler 89, Xavier 82, OT:
— Xavier led 66-60 with 0:52 left in regulation.
— Musketeers lost six of last seven games; they’re likely headed to NIT.

10) Big 14 tournament:
— Northwestern 71, Nebraska 69— Cornhuskers led by 15 early in second half.

9) Indianapolis Colts traded QB Carson Wentz to Washington Wednesday; they got couple of 2nd-round picks and a 3rd-round pick. One of the 2nd rounders becomes a 3rd rounder if Wentz plays less than 70% of Washington’s snaps next year. Washington also gets a 2nd round pick from the Colts.

8) Over the last four seasons, Colts have had four different starting QB’s:
2018— Andrew Luck
2019— Jacoby Brissett
2020— Philip Rivers
2021— Carson Wentz
2022— ?????

7) MAAC tournament:
— Rider 71, Iona 70— Rick Pitino’s Gaels won the MAAC by three games, but they’re headed to the NIT after this loss.
— Rider outscored Iona 6-0 over final 2:37.

6) Pac-12 tournament:
— Stanford 71, Arizona State 70— Sun Devils led 69-55 with 3:01 left in game. ASU made 15-28 on arc, only 3-7 on foul line.
— Oregon 86, Oregon State 72— Beavers were in the Elite 8 last year; they finish 3-28 this year.

5) Maryland fired basketball coach Mark Turgeon in December; there were rumors that the Terps were going after USC coach Andy Enfield, who got his Masters from Maryland after going to college at Johns Hopkins, where is was the best free throw shooter in college history.

This week, USC gave Enfield a raise/contract extension, so he ain’t going to Maryland.

4) NBA season is 82 games long; coaches find unique ways to keep things fresh.

Golden State Warriors had lost 8 of 10 games, so who shows up on the court during pre-game for the Warriors-Clippers game Tuesday?

Actor Will Ferrell, dressed in his basketball uniform from the 2008 hoops film “Semi-Pro.” Yes, Jackie Moon was on the court, shooting with Klay Thompson, who apparently loves that movie.

Golden State won 112-97. Players credited Ferrell for giving the team good energy.

3) We mentioned yesterday how Will Clark hit six homers off of Nolan Ryan, more than anyone else. Reader Glenn points out that Ryan gave up two home runs to pitchers; Burt Hooton and Larry Dierker. Hall of Fame 3B Mike Schmidt hit five homers off of Ryan.

2) Last year, there were 56 baseball players who got shipped to the minors 6+ times, as teams used the rules to keep their rosters fresh. Lot of frequent flyer miles, but apparently this is one of the things the players’ union isn’t happy about.

Reliever throws 3+ innings, he is done for few days, so off to AAA he goes and a fresh arm takes his place.

Lot of smaller things like this are why this labor agreement has taken so long to finish; would’ve been nice if they started negotiating last fall, like a smart business would have.

1) Major league baseball owners cancelled another week of games; I have no desire to debate which side is right or wrong- they’re both wrong.

Tuesday afternoon, I’m sitting at a bar with three TVs on:
— ESPN was talking about the NBA; that’s all ESPN ever talks about.
— ESPN2 was talking about the Rodgers/Wilson NFL moves.
— MLB Network was airing a special on Billy Martin, who died 33 years ago.

It is fitting; baseball is clueless how to market their great sport. Wealthy imbeciles.
