Quote of the Day
“I don’t think there’s any excuse for how we’re playing. Certainly this time of year, every team has its challenges. We’re just not getting it done. Honestly, we’ve been essentially a .500 team for months now. Even when we were pretty healthy and guys had fewer obstacles and were not coming off injuries and things like that, we didn’t do what we needed to do to separate.”
Theo Epstein, talking about the 2019 Cubs

Thursday’s quiz
NFC West is the only division in the NFL where none of their teams lost last week.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 14
David Schwab

The race to the CFL playoffs is heating up. Montreal helped its cause with Friday’s 21-16 victory over British Columbia, but it could not cover against the spread as a 6 ½-point home favorite. Week 13 featured a tripleheader of action on Saturday, starting with Toronto’s stunning 46-17 romp over Ottawa as a five-point road underdog.

Winnipeg was the only favorite to cover with a 35-10 victory against Saskatchewan closing as a slight two-point favorite at home. Calgary is the defending CFL champ and it is back on track towards this season’s title run with Saturday’s 33-17 upset over Edmonton as a three-point underdog on the road.

Friday, Sept. 13

Ottawa RedBlacks (3-8 SU, 4-7 ATS) at British Columbia (1-10 SU, 4-7 ATS)
Point-spread: British Columbia -4 ½
Total: 50 ½

Game Overview

Ottawa has now lost eight of its last nine games straight-up while failing to cover in its last three losses. The total went OVER 51 ½ points in Saturday’s loss and it has gone OVER in three of its last five games. The RedBlacks only trailed Toronto by nine points after three quarters of play, but they were outscored 21-1 in the fourth quarter. Johnathan Jennings completed 78.6 percent of his 42 passing attempts for 327 yards and one score, but the offense turned the ball over five times. Ottawa ran the ball just 10 times for 46 yards.

The Lions dropped their seventh game in a row, but they have been able to cover in three of their last four losses. The total has stayed UNDER in their last three outings. This will be their fifth game of the season at home with a SU 0-4 record (1-3 ATS) in the first four home games. Mike Reilly threw for 230 yards and one score while completing an efficient 20 of his 29 passing attempts. He also added 22 yards on the ground as part of BC’s 112 yards rushing on 24 carries. Reilly is third in the CFL in passing yards with 10 touchdown throws verse 11 interceptions.

Betting Trends

-- BC has won 13 of the last 18 meetings in this inter-division tilt and it has a 4-2 edge ATS in the last six matchups. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in seven of the last 10 games between the two.

Saturday, Sept. 14

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (9-2 SU, 6-4-1 ATS) at Calgary Stampeders (7-4 SU, 5-6 ATS)
Point-spread: Calgary -6 ½
Total: 51 ½

Game Overview

Hamilton comes off a bye with a SU four-game winning streak, but it is just 1-3-1 ATS over its last five games. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of the Tiger-Cats first 11 games and it has also stayed UNDER in their last three games on the road. Jeramiah Masoli remains on the 6-game injured list with Dane Evans taking his place. He has completed 66.3 percent of his 199 passing attempts for 1,591 yards and seven touchdowns. Evans has also been picked off eight times. Hamilton is averaging 30.5 points a game while holding opposing teams to 19.7 points.

The Stampeders are a game and a half in back of Winnipeg for first place in the West Division standings with the home-and-home sweep over Edmonton. The are 4-1 ATS in their last five games with the total going OVER in three of their last four contests. The return of Bo Levi Mitchell at quarterback has given Calgary’s offense a significant spark. He completed 25-of-40 passing attempts for 254 yards and two scores in Saturday’s win. There was some leftover rust with three interceptions. DaShaun Amos returned a Stampeders’ interception for a score in that game.

Betting Trends

-- Calgary is 5-0 SU in its last five home games against the Tiger-Cats and it has covered in six of the last eight meetings overall. The total has stayed UNDER in 11 of the last 14 games in this inter-division clash.

Montreal Alouettes (6-4 SU, 5-5 ATS) at Saskatchewan (7-4 SU, 7-4 ATS)
Point-spread: Saskatchewan -7
Total: 50

Game Overview

Montreal is still three and a half games off the pace in the East Division title race, but it is firmly in place for a playoff spot. Friday’s win was the Alouettes third in a row SU, but they are a costly 1-4 ATS over their last five outings. The total stayed UNDER 49 points against BC and it has stayed UNDER in four of their last six games. Montreal is 5-2 ATS this season when closing as an underdog. Vernon Adams Jr. continues to play well at quarterback. He threw for 232 yards with one score and one interception his last time out. Adams is fifth in the CFL in total passing yards (2,121).

The Roughriders ended a SU six-game winning streak with Saturday’s loss to Winnipeg. They are 5-2 ATS during the same seven-game span with the total staying UNDER in four of their last five contests. Saskatchewan is 4-2 ATS at home this season and 5-2 ATS when closing as a favorite. Trailing Saturday’s game 28-3 at halftime, the offense only managed to add seven points in the second half. Cody Fajardo did not have his best day throwing the ball with 196 yards on 16 completions with zero touchdowns and one pick.

Betting Trends

-- The Roughriders are 4-2 SU in their last six home games against Montreal with the total staying UNDER in five of the last six meetings in Saskatchewan. The Alouettes have a 10-5 edge ATS in the last 15 meetings overall.

CFL Week 14 preview, odds, picks & predictions: First-half problems fuel this bet
Rohit Ponnaiya

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats haven't won on the road against the Calgary Stampeders since 2004, and they're 6.5-point underdogs for their trip to McMahon Stadium on Saturday .

It's Week 14 of the CFL season and we could be in for a preview of this year's Grey Cup in Calgary as the defending champion Stampeders host the 9-2 Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

We break down the odds (provided by 10bet.com) and bring you in-depth analysis and predictions for all the football games north of the border.

Season Betting Trends

Favorites: 36-14 SU, 22-27-1 ATS
Home teams: 30-20 SU, 25-24-1 ATS
Over/Under: 23-26-1

Week 13 Picks: 3-1
Season to date: 21-23-2

OTTAWA REDBLACKS AT BC LIONS

This might be a matchup of the two worst teams in the league. The Lions are 1-10 and 0-4 at home, while the Redblacks have lost eight of their last nine games and are coming off a 46-17 drubbing at the hands of the Argonauts. So who has the edge? It's worth pointing out that BC has at least been competitive recently, losing three of their last four games by five or fewer points.

BC also has the edge at QB with Mike Reilly as opposed to Ottawa's two-headed platoon of mediocrity in Jonanthan Jennings and Dominique Davis. While Reilly has struggled at times this season that's largely because of how inept his pass protection. Considering that the Redblacks pass rush has mustered only 18 sacks that shouldn't be much of a problem for the Lions on Friday. Back BC to win and cover.

PICK: BC -5.5

HAMILTON TIGER-CATS AT CALGARY STAMPEDERS

Calgary survived seven games without 2018 Most Outstanding Player Bo Levi Mitchell at quarterback, going 4-3 with backup Nick Arbuckle. Now Mitchell is back and the Stamps are more than ready to defend their Grey Cup title. The Tiger-Cats are getting by without their own starting signal-caller, having won four straight with Dane Evans under center.

However, the Ti-Cats have gotten off to poor starts ever since they lost star QB Jeremiah Masoli: they trailed 13-6 at halftime vs the Riders, were down 21-19 against the Lions, led by a score of 4-1 vs the Redblacks, were tied 3-3 at half in Week 11, and in their last game trailed the Argos by 13 points after 30 minutes.

The Ti-Cats haven't won at McMahon Stadium since 2004, going 0-14 in their last 14 visits to Calgary, . That history of ugly Calgary road trips along with their first-half woes has me backing the Stamps on the 1H spread.

PICK: First Half Spread Calgary -3.5

MONTREAL ALOUETTES AT SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS

These teams tangled back on August 9 and it was a grind-it-out slug fest with a final score of 17-10. The offenses were actually even worse than that score suggests; both of Saskatchewan's touchdowns were scored by their defense and the Alouettes' lone TD was on a punt return.

Montreal's offense shouldn't be quite as putrid this time around since they have a competent QB in Vernon Adams Jr. as opposed to Antonio Pipkin and Matthew Schiltz (who combined for a horrific 90 passing yards in that home loss). That said, even with Adams throwing the ball they scored 21 points against BC last week and 28 against Toronto the week before, modest numbers against the two worst defenses in the league.

The Roughriders allow the second-fewest yards in the league and lead the CFL with 3.1 sacks per game. Their offense has been limited to just 22 points per game over their last five contests. Take the Under.

PICK: Under 50

GAME RECAP
LIONS’ AIR ATTACK COMES TOGETHER IN WIN OVER REDBLACKS
CFL.CA STAFF

VANCOUVER — Playing at home, the BC Lions seized the opportunity as they defeated the Ottawa REDBLACKS 29-5 at BC Place on Friday night.

The win marked their first home win of the year and their second win of the season.

Quarterback Mike Reilly was quick to get the offensive tempo roaring for the Lions. In their opening drive, he’d connect with Lemar Durant for a 52-yard catch-and-run, opening up the scoring in the early minutes of the first quarter.

The touchdown became Durant’s fifth major of the season, snapping a scoreless streak for the national wideout after not scoring a touchdown since July 6 against the Argonauts.

It was arguably the Lions best performance of the year thus far. Reilly completed the game with 286 yards passing. He completed 20 of his 29 pass attempts and passing for two touchdowns. He also added two on the ground.

Another positive front for the Lions, their offensive line kept Reilly clean for the first time this season. Reilly has led the league in an unfavourable category of sacks given with 45.

The run game was also clicking for the Lions. With John White out on injury, Brandon Rutley has stepped in and the ground attack hasn’t missed a beat for the Leos. Rutley finished the game with 20 carries for 111 yards.

Jonathon Jennings, in his return to BC Place since joining the REDBLACKS in the off-season, breathed a sigh of relief on the offence’s second drive of the quarter. After passing into the flat and being intercepted by TJ Lee, the officials determined that defensive lineman Shawn Lemon lined up in the neutral zone.

However, the Lions secondary remained on the prowl as a few short plays later, they’d get their hands on another Jennings pass. Branden Dozier came up with the interception, setting up Reilly and the offence on Ottawa’s 34-yard line.

Reilly kept the pedal to the metal, connecting with Duron Carter along the right side of the end zone for his first touchdown of the year.

With 100 passing yards in the first quarter, Reilly passed Tom Burgess and Sam Etcheverry for 15th on the league’s all-time passing yards list.

While BC looked to be boasting all of the confidence in the early-goings of the game, the Ottawa defence came up with an interception in hopes of stalling them. DeAndre Farris intercepted Mike Reilly with 3:05 remaining in the quarter.

Playing without their top receiver in Brad Sinopoli, the offence for Ottawa continued to struggle in gaining any sort of momentum. With the Lions secondary in tight coverage, Jennings had to opt for his check-down, targetting runningback Mossis Madu on four of their six plays for the drive.

Much of the second quarter had either squad exchanging offensive outings.

That’d remain the case until the final few minutes of the half as Reilly got his running shoes on. On a drive where he scampered for a 27-yard run, the Lions pivot capped off the drive with a touchdown plunge from three yards out, pushing the Lions lead to 21-0 following Sergio Castillo’s third point-after of the half.

Entering the game as the league leader in quarterback sacks given up, BC’s offensive line finished the first 30 minutes of play without committing a sack.

Meanwhile, their defensive unit managed to wrap up Jennings on two occasions.

On 13 pass attempts in the first half, the REDBLACKS’ quarterback managed to complete just six passes for 46 yards.

The first points on the board for Ottawa came byway of Lewis Ward. In the third quarter, the second-year kicker booted a 32-yarder.

At the end of the third quarter, after pushing the ball deep into the red zone, the Lions drew a pass interference call in the end zone. From the 1-yard line, Reilly soared over the trench of the goal-line for his second rushing touchdown of the night, further extending the Leos lead to 28-3.

Ottawa’s defensive locked up the Lions’ passing attack on the ensuing drive, starting the fourth quarter. De’Chavon Hayes hauled in his second interception of the year as Reilly looked to connect with Shaq Johnson on a deep route.

The REDBLACKS tried to get some offensive tempo flowing after a 41-yard reception by Dominque Rhymes, who was cradling along the sideline in the BC end of the field before stepping out at the BC 45-yard line.

After marching down to the BC 4-yard line, the REDBLACKS were unable to cap off the drive with any points. The Lions snatched back possession after Jonathan Newsome sacked Jennings on third down, forcing the turnover on downs with 5:26 remaining in the game.

The two teams will be back in action next Saturday, squaring off each other once again. While the REDBLACKS will be the home squad, they will enter the game having only won once this season at TD Place Stadium. As for the Lions, they have only one road win this season.

LEAGUE LEADING TICATS LOOK FOR RARE WIN IN CALGARY
CFL.CA STAFF

CALGARY — The leading team in the Canadian Football League sets sights on the defending champions.

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats meet the Calgary Stampeders at McMahon Stadium in Calgary Saturday afternoon. The Ticats edged the Stamps 30-23 in their previous meeting back in mid-July.

With weeks to go before the playoffs, Stampeders’ head coach Dave Dickenson is making sure his players have their eyes on the prize.

“You can see there’s still seven games, but most people know where we’re at and how close we are to getting an opportunity,” he said. “We want to make the playoffs first, then we want to win the West, and after that you’re hopeful to get another chance at the Grey Cup.”

As for the league best Ticats, they’re blocking out any noise about their team and their record. Despite leading the CFL, the Ticats have yet to rank higher than second in the CFL.ca Nissan Titan Power Rankings, and currently sit third.

“I do not stay up at night (worrying about it),” Ticats head coach Orlondo Steinauer said. “Our record is what it is. However people want to view it, it’s fine. I wouldn’t feel any differently about our ball club if we were .500.

“I know how we come to work every day. I’m really not interested in other people’s opinions.”

“I don’t have cable. I don’t watch the TSN panel. I don’t watch the power ranking, whatever that is. None of that, absolutely none of it,” Ticats defensive tackle Dylan Wynn said. “It’s great for fans, and it (creates) amazing talking points. And I guess it would be fun guessing who would win every week, but no. Not at all.”

Meanwhile, Calgary receiver Reggie Begelton continues his crusade for the league’s receiving triple crown, currently leading in receptions, yards, and touchdowns.

“It feels good to have your work noticed,’’ he said. “I’m not going to deny that. We all have some sort of ego. So compliments are always nice to hear. But you never know from game to game how many times you’re going to be targeted or how many catches you’ll be able to make.”

But even he knows what his team’s true ambitions are.

“We, as a group, have a goal for the end of the year,” he added. “And I’m pretty sure you know what that goal is. I missed the Grey Cup last year, so I want to get back there and I want to play, especially with the game being here in Calgary.”

The Stamps will make a few changes to their lineup, with linebacker Dwayne Norman, offensive lineman David Brown and defensive lineman Chris Casher drawing in. Casher was activated from the team’s one-game injury list after he was injured in a car crash. The 25-year old has three sacks in nine games this season.

“Unexpected. Stuff happens, it’s life,” Casher told the Calgary Sun earlier this week. “(The Stampeders) just wanted to be on the safe side and make sure I was OK.”

Running back Asnnel Robo was also activated from the one-game injury list but he’s on the practice roster. Running back William Langlais and offensive lineman Ucambre Williams were both moved to the one-game injured list.

Receiver Kamar Jorden joined his teammates at practice this week but he’s not close to returning. He injured his MCL, PCL, and ACL in last year’s Labour Day Classic.

The Ticats will have linebacker Nick Shorthill in the lineup alongside left tackle Kelvin Palmer. Shorthill will replace linebacker Jay Langa, who’s on the six-game injured list. Receiver Brian Jones won’t be in the lineup as he’s on the one-game injured list.

Jackson Bennett will get the start at running back for the Tabbies, with Anthony Coombs also expected to make an impact. The team signed Tyrell Sutton this week, who practised but won’t make his debut.

BY THE NUMBERS

2-27 — Since 1989, the Tiger-Cats have only won twice in Calgary. Hamilton’s victory over the Stamps on July 13 was their first in Calgary since July 4, 2004.

100 — Stampeders receiver Reggie Begelton is trying to become the first Calgary receiver to lead the league in receiving since Nik Lewis did in 2012. He made 100 catches that year.

138 — Ticats receiver Brandon Banks needs 138 more receiving yards to reach 1,000 for the third straight year. The last receiver to do that was Darren Flutie (1999-2001).

0 — Stamps’ quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell has never lost a game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, having defeated them 11 times. He puts his undefeated record on the the line Saturday.

Kickoff is at 4 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN and ESPN+, and followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker.

PREVIEW
ALS, RIDERS CAP OFF WEEK 14 IN REGINA
CFL.CA STAFF

REGINA — Two teams with their sights on the Canadian Football League playoffs will renew hostilities in a Saturday evening clash.

The Montreal Alouettes (7-4) will visit the Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-4) Saturday afternoon at Mosaic Stadium. It’s the first time these two teams have met since Aug. 9, when the Riders won in a game that was shortened by a weather delay at Molson Percival Stadium in Montreal.

But, after previously reeling off six straight wins, Saskatchewan is coming off a 35-10 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the annual Banjo Bowl.

“We still think we’re a good football team. We still feel like we have a lot of good football ahead of us,” Riders head coach Craig Dickenson said.

The Als are searching for their fourth straight win in what quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. calls a hostile environment. But he adds the way to do that is to start fast and strong.

“There’s been a few weeks where we’ve kept these games kind of close,” Adams said. “We want to do better and that’s the goal.”

Defensive end John Bowman will look to repeat his performance against the BC Lions last week. The 37-year old picked up two sacks and five tackles in a 21-16 victory, which resulted him being named a Shaw Top Performer of the past week.

“I just try to execute and try to play good ball,” he told the Montreal Gazette earlier this week. “I can’t explain it. I just try to play every play like it’s my last.”

The Riders will be without a key piece to their defence as defensive end Charleston Hughes will sit out the contest due to injury. He’s on the one-game injured list. Hughes, 35, leads the league in sacks with 13.

Earl Okine will replace him in the lineup and newly-signed Chad Geter will be his backup. According to the Regina Leader-Post, Hughes practised on Tuesday but he sat out Wednesday and left Thursday’s practice early.

“I know we gave him (Wednesday) off to rest him,” Dickenson said at the time. “He’s sore and he’s a little beaten up, but there isn’t anything injury-wise that we’re concerned about.”

Canadian rookie receiver Mitch Picton will also make his first CFL start Saturday, as he’ll fill in for Justin McInnis who’s sidelined due to injury.

“I don’t know about nerves, but more so excitement,” he said. “I’ve been around for a little bit so I’m pretty comfortable with how things go around here. I’m just looking forward to the experience.”

Offensive lineman Jake Bennett will also be inserted into the lineup for the Riders.

The Alouettes, meanwhile, will be missing running back Jeremiah Johnson. In six games this year, Johnson has one rushing touchdown and 263 rushing yards. Running back Shaquille Murray-Lawrence will take his place behind starter William Stanback.

Als’ receiver Chris Matthews could also make his debut Saturday after joining the team as a free agent. He was released by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers earlier this season. In six games, he has one touchdown, and 12 catches for 180 yards. He’s extremely grateful that his teammates have been keeping up to speed in time for this weekend’s game.

“They’ve all shared an equal amount in helping me and making sure I know what I’m doing. The coaches are doing an amazing job with teaching me the plays and helping me learn as fast as possible,” he said.

“All blessings to Montreal for giving me the opportunity to extend my career in the CFL,” he added. “I’m happy to be out here and to play.”

BY THE NUMBERS

245 — In Riders quarterback Cody Fajardo’s last start against the Alouettes, he threw for that many passing yards in the Aug. 9 encounter.

2018 — A Montreal Alouettes victory would result in their first win in Regina since 2018, where they won 23-17. The Roughriders last defeated the Alouettes on their home turf in 2017.

10 — Alouettes quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. has thrown 10 touchdown passes this season, nine off the league lead set by Toronto Argonauts quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson. Adams also has 10 rushing touchdowns, leading the league.

9 — Saskatchewan Roughriders running back William Powell has nine rushing touchdowns, which leads all running backs but trails Adams’ tally.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN+, and followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker.

ROBERSON’S LAST-MINUTE BLOCK LEADS STAMPS OVER TICATS
CFL.CA STAFF

CALGARY — Tre Roberson blocked Hamilton’s game-winning field goal attempt in the final minute to help give the Calgary Stampeders a 19-18 win over the Tiger-Cats on Saturday. The Stamps now hold an 8-4 record after winning three straight games since Bo Levi Mitchell’s return from injury.

The Ticats went ahead early on a pair of field goals from Lirim Hajrullahu before the Stamps responded with a field goal from Rene Paredes. Hamilton scored the game’s first touchdown when Brandon Banks reached the end zone on a 30-yard catch-and-run in the second quarter, and both teams traded field goals before half-time to make it a 17-6 game.

Paredes added two more field goals in the third quarter to cut Hamilton’s lead down to just six points, and the Stamps grabbed their first lead with under seven minutes to play in the fourth quarter when Mitchell threw a 15-yard touchdown to Eric Rogers. The Ticats attempted a 42-yard field goal with less than a minute remaining, but Roberson came up with the big play to seal the victory.

Mitchell completed 60 per cent of his passes for 342 yards in the win. Rogers caught eight-of-11 targets for 129 yards, while Reggie Begelton had another strong performance with 106 receiving yards on six catches.

Hamilton’s defence forced the Stamps to settle for five field goal attempts, and they held Calgary to just 32 rushing yards and 129 passing yards in the first half.

Hamilton opened up the scoring midway through the first quarter on a 25-yard field goal from Hajrullahu after the Stamps came up with a defensive stop in their own end. Addison helped set up the field goal with a 36-yard catch.

Hajrullahu added a 22-yard field goal later in the quarter after Dane Evans helped engineer a six-play, 51-yard drive. Addison came through with the biggest play of the drive once again by breaking off an 18-yard run.

The Stamps responded before the end of the quarter with a 42-yard field goal from Paredes that cut Hamilton’s lead in half. Mitchell completed back-to-back 19-yard passes to Rogers and Begelton to set up the kick, with Begelton making an impressive grab before gaining an extra 13 yards.

But Hamilton reached the end zone first, with Banks turning on the jets in open space for a 30-yard touchdown. Addison also chipped in 29 yards on the drive, and Anthony Coombs added the two-point conversion on the ground to give the Ticats a 14-3 lead in the second quarter.

The Ticats were driving for more points before the end of the opening half, but Roberson notched his seventh interception of the season when he went up high to pick off a deep pass intended for Banks.

Mitchell and the Stamps’ offence attempted to seize the opportunity provided by the turnover, but Hamilton’s defence forced another field goal after standing tall on a long drive. Paredes made the 49-yard kick with under a minute left, but the Ticats answered back with a quick drive that led to a 45-yard field goal from Hajrullahu to make it a 17-6 game heading into the third quarter.

The Ticats notched a single on the opening kickoff of the third quarter to extend their lead to 11 points.

The Stamps responded once again, this time with a seven-play, 75-yard drive that led to a 17-yard field goal from Paredes. Rogers came up with a big 22-yard grab against double coverage and Ka’Deem Carey racked up 34 yards on a pair of catches to help set up the kick.

Calgary notched another takeaway on defence when Raheem Wilson stripped the ball away from Banks after the receiver took a pitch from Addison on a sweep play. Brandon Smith recovered the ball for the Stamps, and Mitchell completed key passes to Josh Huff and Rogers to move the chains and set up a 20-yard field goal from Paredes.

Paredes’ fourth field goal of the game cut Hamilton’s lead down to just six points with three minutes left in the third quarter.

A 29-yard catch from Begelton gave Calgary needed momentum on a fourth quarter drive, and Mitchell made the most of it by throwing a 15-yard touchdown pass to Rogers on the very next play. Paredes kicked the extra point to give the Stamps a 19-18 lead with just under seven minutes to play.

Both teams will be in action again next Friday in Week 15, with the Calgary Stampeders facing the Toronto Argonauts on the road and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats travelling to take on the Edmonton Eskimos.

GAME RECAP
LATE FIELD GOAL LIFTS RIDERS OVER ALS
CFL.CA STAFF

REGINA — Brett Lauther kicked a game-winning 39-yard field goal with under a minute left to lift the Saskatchewan Roughriders over the Montreal Alouettes with a 27-25 home win on Saturday.

Three field goals from Boris Bede gave Montreal an early 9-0 lead, but the Riders grabbed momentum and cut into the lead when a 46-yard catch from Shaq Evans set up a short catch-and-run touchdown from William Powell in the second quarter. The Riders took a one-point lead before half-time on a short field goal from Lauther.

A rushing touchdown from William Stanback gave Montreal the lead in the third quarter, but Cody Fajardo responded with a touchdown run of his own and a two-point conversion to tie the game.

The Riders extended their lead with Powell’s second touchdown of the game, but a missed extra point left the door open for Montreal. The Als answered the call when Vernon Adams Jr. threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Eugene Lewis, and Bede’s extra point gave Montreal a 25-24 lead with eight minutes to play.

But Saskatchewan came back to win, as Fajardo led a 54-yard drive after the three-minute warning to set up the deciding field goal.

Powell finished the game with 94 rushing yards on 15 carries, averaging 6.3 yards per carry. Powell also racked up 30 receiving yards on three catches.

Fajardo threw for 254 yards while completing 70 per cent of his passes.

The Als opened up the scoring late in the first quarter on a 32-yard field goal from Bede after Adams got the drive going with a 24-yard pass to DeVier Posey. Adams later completed a 42-yard strike to Chris Matthews to end the opening quarter, and the big gain led to an 18-yard field goal from Bede to extend the early lead.

Montreal’s offence was driving down the field again later in the second quarter, with Adams completing big passes to Lewis and Quan Bray for back-to-back 30-yard gains. But the Riders’ defence held strong once again, with Loucheiz Purifoy breaking up a pass in the end zone to force a 29-yard field goal from Bede.

The Riders began to find life on offence when Fajardo connected with Evans on a 46-yard pass play. Powell followed up the big gain by reaching the end zone on a 10-yard catch-and-run, and Lauther kicked the extra point to cut Montreal’s lead down to just two points.

Saskatchewan attempted to take the lead late in the first half after a 25-yard catch from Naaman Roosevelt set up a field goal attempt, but Lauther’s 33-yard kick missed wide to the right.

But the Riders’ defence forced another punt, and Fajardo capitalized by leading his team to a 14-yard field goal to grab a one-point lead before half-time.

Montreal took the lead midway through the third quarter after a 32-yard catch from Bray set up a four-yard rushing touchdown from Stanback one play later. Adams capped off the drive by completing the two-point conversion pass to Posey, giving the Als a 17-10 lead.

The Als extend their lead to eight points when the ensuing 80-yard kickoff from Bede resulted in a single.

Fajardo came up with a big drive later in the third quarter to retake momentum. The Riders quarterback capped off a seven-play, 65-yard scoring drive with an incredible seven-yard touchdown run. Fajardo accelerated to the edge and stretched out to hit the pylon for the touchdown, and he followed it up by adding the two-point conversion on a three-yard run to even the score.

Montreal turned the ball over on downs after a fumbled snap during a punt attempt, and the Riders capitalized two plays later with Powell scoring a five-yard rushing touchdown. But Lauther’s extra point attempt went wide, leaving the Riders with a 24-18 lead in the fourth quarter.

The Als evened things up when Adams threw a 27-yard touchdown strike to Lewis, and Bede’s extra point gave Montreal a 25-24 lead with eight minutes to play.

But the Riders found a way to come out on top, with Lauther hitting the game-winning field goal in the final minute after a brilliant 25-yard grab from Evans helped put the team in position.

Week 15 will see the Montreal Alouettes host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers next Saturday, while the Saskatchewan Roughriders will get a week to rest before facing the Toronto Argonauts on the road in Week 16.

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……

13) From Liam Stack (this story made me laugh):
A New Zealand man brought an emotional support clown to a meeting where he knew he’d be fired. The clown blew up balloons and folded them into a series of animals throughout the meeting, then mimed crying when the man was handed a pink slip.

Didn’t help; the guy still lost his job.

12) From Russell Baxter: 72 of the 106 Super Bowl teams started that season 2-0; only four of them started 0-2.

11) Atlanta Falcons play their first nine games this year in domes; their first of only three outdoor games is Week 11 (Nov 17) at Carolina.

10) From Ralph Michaels: Since 2016, under is 18-9 in college football games that had a total of 40 or less points.

9) Colts, Eagles and Packers are pretty banged up; they all scrapped their traditional Wednesday practices this week, and had walk-throughs instead.

8) David Fales would appear to be the Jets’ new backup QB; he’s thrown 48 passes in three NFL games, two for Miami in 2017 (with Adam Gase as coach) and one for Chicago in 2016. Fales played college ball at San Jose State.

7) Football stuff:
— Chiefs’ LT Eric Fisher is having core muscle surgery, is out this week.

6) Last time there was a week of NFL games where no team scored 30+ points was Week 9 in 1995, so long ago that the Houston Oilers won a game that week.

5) Pirates’ closer Felipe Vazquez was arrested in Pittsburgh Tuesday on charges of soliciting a child, computer pornography and providing obscene material to minors.

4) Giancarlo Stanton’s over/under home run total for this year was 41.5; wth 11 days left in this season, he has one homer and seven RBI.

3) A’s 1, Royals 0 (11)— Mark Canha got the walk-off hit on Mark Canha T-shirt Day and Chad Pinder made a great catch in left field to save two runs as Oakland won its 92nd game this year.

2) Four teams that got to the Super Bowl after starting season 0-2:
— 1993— Cowboys (won Super Bowl)
— 1996— Patriots (lost)
— 2001— Patriots (won)
— 2007— Giants (won)

1) From Annie Karni of the New York Times:

“Sean Spicer got a minimum of $125,000 to be on Dancing With the Stars, and the pay goes up with every week he stays on.”

We live in a very strange world.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 15
David Schwab

There were just three games in the CFL this past weekend starting with British Columbia’s 29-5 romp over Ottawa on Friday night as a 5 ½-point home favorite.

Saturday’s CFL doubleheader got underway with Calgary squeezing past Hamilton 19-18 while failing to cover as a 6 ½-point favorite at home. In the nightcap, Saskatchewan kept things perfect for the home team with a 27-25 victory against Montreal. However, the Roughriders could not cover the closing 6 ½-point spread in the third Week 14 inter-division matchup.

Friday, Sept. 20

Calgary Stampeders (8-4 SU, 5-7 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (2-9 SU, 5-5-1 ATS)
Point-spread: Calgary -7
Total: 53

Game Overview

The Stampeders are just one game off the pace in the West Division standings with Saturday’s win. They have won their last three games straight-up with a 5-2 record against the spread over their past seven games. The total stayed UNDER 51 ½ points against Hamilton and it has stayed UNDER in seven of Calgary’s last 10 games. A blocked field goal with less than a minute to play was the difference in that last win. Bo Levi Mitchell helped the cause with 342 yards passing and one touchdown throw.

The Argonauts come off their bye with a 3-1-1 record ATS over their last five games. They hammered Ottawa 46-17 their last time out as five-point road underdogs. The total has gone OVER in four of their last five outings. James Wilder Jr. posted three scores in that romp and McLeod Bethel-Thompson finished the day with 411 yards passing with three touchdown throws. That was the most points Toronto scored all season with an offense that is averaging 20.4 points per game.

Betting Trends

-- Calgary has beaten Toronto SU in 11 of the last 12 meetings and it is 6-1 ATS in its last seven road games in this inter-division matchup. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (9-3 SU, 7-4-1 ATS) at Edmonton Eskimos (6-6 SU, 4-8 ATS)
Point-spread: TBA
Total: TBA

Game Overview

With Montreal’s loss on Saturday, the Tiger-Cats are still 2 ½ games up in the East standings. The loss to Calgary snapped a SU four-game winning streak and the cover evened their record to 2-2-1 ATS in that same span on games. The total has stayed UNDER in six of their last eight games. Hamilton got a solid effort from quarterback Dane Evans in the losing cause. He completed 79.1 percent of his 43 passing attempts for 360 yards and one score. Five different players ran the ball for a total of 113 yards rushing on 20 carries.

The Eskimos are coming off their bye week with three losses in a row both SU and ATS. This includes a home-and-home sweep at the hands of Calgary. They have failed to cover in five of their last six games with the total staying UNDER in seven of their last 10 contests. Edmonton is 2-4 ATS in six previous home games. Trevor Harris missed most of his last start due to injury and he remains questionable for Friday night. Logan Kilgore completed 21-of-28 throws for 242 yards in relief.

Betting Trends

-- Hamilton is 4-2 SU in its last six games against Edmonton and the total has gone OVER in six of the last seven meetings in this inter-division matchup. The Eskimos are 0-5 ATS in their last five home games against Hamilton.

Saturday, Sept. 21

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-3 SU, 9-3 ATS) at Montreal Alouettes (6-5 SU, 6-5 ATS)
Point-spread: Winnipeg -2
Total: 47

Game Overview

Ahead of last week’s bye, Winnipeg won four of its previous five games SU and it has covered ATS in its last four outings. The total has stayed UNDER in three of its last four games. The Blue Bombers are 4-2 ATS on the road this season. They are still missing Matt Nichols at quarterback with a bad shoulder, but he is listed as questionable on the latest injury report. In his place, Chris Streveler has thrown for 518 yards and four touchdowns in his last three starts. The offense averaged 28.7 points in those three games.

Saturday’s loss snapped a SU three-game winning streak that started with a stunning road win against Calgary. Montreal is just 2-4 ATS over its last six games and it is 2-3 ATS in five previous home games. Vernon Adams Jr. completed 22-of-36 passing attempts for 344 yards and one score his last time out with Eugene Lewis hauling in eight catches for 130 yards and that lone passing touchdown. The Alouettes ran the ball 18 times for 74 yards against Saskatchewan.

Betting Trends

-- Winnipeg brings a SU five-game winning streak into this inter-division tilt while going 4-1 ATS in its last five games against Montreal. The total went OVER in four of those last five matchups.

British Columbia (2-10 SU, 5-7 ATS) at Ottawa RedBlacks (3-9 SU, 4-8 ATS)
Point-spread: BC -3
Total: 47 ½

Friday’s win was the Lions’ first SU victory since July 6. It was also their fourth cover in their last five contests. The total stayed UNDER 49 points against Ottawa and it has stayed UNDER in BC’s last four games. In this home-and-home series opener, BC opened up a 21-0 lead at halftime and cruised to the win behind a stellar effort on defense. This was also one of Mike Reilly’s better efforts of the season with 286 yards passing and two touchdown throws against a pair of interceptions. He has thrown for 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions on the year.

Ottawa has just one SU win in its last 10 games while going 3-7 ATS during that same span. The total has stayed UNDER in three of its last five games. The RedBlacks are 1-5 ATS at home this season. Jonathon Jennings continues to get the call at quarterback. He completed 19-of-31 passes for 239 yards and zero scores verse a pair of picks in Friday’s loss. He was the team’s leading rusher with 37 yards on eight attempts. Mossis Madu added another 28 yards rushing on eight carries.

Betting Trends:

-- With Friday’s win, BC is now 14-5 SU in its last 19 games against Ottawa. The Lions have a 5-2 edge ATS in the last seven meetings. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in three of the last five matchups in this inter-division clash.

ARGOS LOOK TO SLOW STAMPS ON FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL
CFL.CA STAFF

TORONTO — The Calgary Stampeders are undefeated since the return of Bo Levi Mitchell, but the Toronto Argonauts are looking to put an end to that on Friday night at BMO Field.

Although he hasn’t been lighting up the stat sheet in his three games since returning to the lineup, Mitchell has been doing what he does best – winning. He’s averaging 286 passing yards over those three starts, tossing four touchdown passes and three picks.

It’s important to note that Calgary is relying heavily on the reigning Most Outstanding Player. He’s thrown 40 passes in each of his last two games.

“He makes the big throws,” head coach Dave Dickenson told Stampeders.com of his quarterback. “He’s just a winner. Him and I, we play off each other. We’re just so competitive. I want him to be better and better and better. He takes ownership. He takes leadership. Makes his own mistakes but owns them, moves forward and wins.”

A team that has not been doing as much winning as Calgary has been the Toronto Argonauts, although they are coming off their most impressive performance of the season. Prior to their bye last week, Toronto defeated the Ottawa REDBLACKS 46-17.

The Argos have struggled to close out games all season, but they outscored Ottawa 28-4 in the second half.

James Wilder Jr. did most of the damage, finding the end zone three times in the fourth quarter. Wilder has been trying to regain the form that saw him earn Most Outstanding Rookie honours in 2017, with his 87 all-purpose yards on 11 touches being one of his best showings of the year.

Another player lighting it up for Toronto has been McLeod Bethel-Thompson. He is currently second in league passing yards and is one of only two quarterbacks to surpass 3,000 yards thus far this season. Even more impressive is the fact that Bethel-Thompson has done it while starting 2019 as the Argos backup.

“Certainly, there has been a progression for him,” Argos offensive coordinator Jacques Chapdelaine said of Bethel-Thompson. “He probably felt that he not only had some things to learn, but some things that he wanted to prove to himself. As a human being that makes you perform in a certain way. I think as the year has gone on, maybe the chip on his shoulder has turned more into a positive asset than being overbearing.”

The Stamps lead the league in interceptions with 19, so Friday will be a good test for Bethel-Thompson. Moreover, the 31-year-old has never beaten the Calgary Stampeders, while Mitchell is a perfect 10-0 versus Toronto in his career.

“It’s all about winning,” Bethel-Thompson said. “I’m a 2-9 quarterback. We’re a 2-9 football team. Until we start winning, and once we get this win streak going, and we start rolling, and racking them up week after week, that’s when football is going to be fun. Right now, I feel like we’re on the brink of fighting back. Hopefully we can come off this bye week and get this ball rolling and start the new season with a win and take these last seven.”

Tre Roberson is a big part of Calgary leading the league in picks, but it was his work on special teams that made headlines last week. He leapt an estimated 10 feet in the air, stuffing a Hamilton field goal attempt that would have given the Tiger-Cats the lead with under a minute to go.

Roberson’s heroics overshadowed another highlight-reel special teams play from Calgary. In the second quarter with a Stampeders drive having sputtered out, Rob Maver lined up to punt…until he didn’t. Maver came up throwing and hit reserve fullback Ante Milanovic-Litre for a 25-yard gain to keep the drive alive.

“I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – I’d rather throw the football than kick it,” Maver said. “I like having those bigger contributions. Punts can be big contributions, but anytime you can put the offence back on the field, it’s great. I probably throw the ball more than I kick during a day and I beg for those.”

Four plays later, Mitchell hit Eric Rogers to give the Stamps a lead they would maintain for the rest of the contest.

For the Stampeders, playing an Argos team coming off a bye on the road won’t be easy, especially with a growing injured list. Leading receiver Reggie Begelton, who went over the 1,000-yard mark last weekend, won’t be available for Friday’s game, while CFL leading tackler Cory Greenwood is also out.

With Markeith Ambles also sidelined, Aaron Peck and Josh Huff expand their roles in a relatively inexperienced receiving core. While Nate Holley gets the start at linebacker, the O-line will start three Canadians this week with Justin Lawrence drawing in for Nila Kasitati.

PREVIEW
TOP OFFENCES CLASH AS TICATS VISIT ESKIMOS
CFL.CA STAFF

EDMONTON — The number 15 will be on full display during a Friday night confrontation between two teams with their sights on the playoffs.

The league’s top two offensive powers in Edmonton (6-6) and Hamilton (9-3) will square off Friday night at The Brick Field in Commonwealth Stadium. Edmonton will honour legendary quarterback Ricky Ray, who wore the number 15, at halftime by naming him to the team’s Wall of Honour.

On the field, Edmonton quarterback Logan Kilgore will start in place of an injured Trevor Harris. Kilgore will don Ray’s number 15 against the Ticats Friday. The Californian has made one appearance this season, throwing 242 passing yards and one touchdown.

“If you look at anyone who has been good in this league, at some point they came in for somebody,” Kilgore said. “You get an opportunity and that’s what happens.”

“It’s kind of surreal that this opportunity is arising for Logan,” Esks head coach, and former teammate of Ray’s, Jason Maas told the Edmonton Journal this week. “And not only that, Logan and Ricky are very close. They come from the same area, they’ve known each other for a long time too. I think Logan has as much respect for Ricky as he does for probably anybody in football. I think we all do.”

As for Harris, he is now on the one-game injured list. He practised at different points this week, trying to play through a forearm injury. He spoke to the media earlier this week about the pain he was suffering.

“It was almost debilitating,” he said. “Just not being able to throw a football. It’s something I’ve been able to do my whole life. It’s like one of your senses is gone. I was like ‘I can’t throw, I don’t know what to do’.”

Friday’s meeting will be the first between Hamilton and Edmonton this season. The Ticats are also coming off an 19-18 loss to the Calgary Stampeders, their first in their last five games. Ticats head coach Orlondo Steinauer anticipates a tough matchup against a well-rested opponent.

“Coming off a bye, we’re going to get Edmonton’s best, so this should be a great football game,” Steinauer said.

“I’m just trying to do whatever my job is,” Ticats quarterback Dane Evans said. “To move the ball down the field and put some points on the board.”

“You’ve got to match (Edmonton’s defence) play for play as much as you can,” Ticats defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Mark Washington said. “They have an outstanding front. They put a lot of pressure on the quarterback. Hopefully, we can do the same thing.”

Tiger-Cats receiver Jalin Marshall will be in the lineup Friday. The former National Football League draft pick has yet to make a catch in the Canadian Football League. Defensive back Will Likely III will also be in the lineup. Hamilton will sit linebacker Jordan Moore and receiver Justin Sumpter, with both players on the practice roster.

Luke Tasker returned to practice this week but is not yet ready to return. Meanwhile, the Ticats will start Jackson Bennett at running back, with Anthony Coombs also in the equation as Tyrell Sutton remains on the practice roster.

Shutdown corner Delvin Breaux is still on the six-game injured list, as the Ticats have had to overcome plenty of injuries en route to their impressive record so far.

Edmonton defensive end and Canadian Mathieu Betts will make his CFL debut Friday. The 24-year old tried to catch on with the Chicago Bears of the NFL earlier this year. Edmonton drafted Betts in this year’s draft and they put pen to paper on a contract during the bye week.

“The whole point for me is to make my time here in Edmonton count,” said Betts, who was ranked the country’s top amateur prospect by the CFL Scouting Bureau before going in the first round back in the spring. “I’m looking forward to my first game against Hamilton and just trying to work on my craft.”

Edmonton will also start defensive back Forrest Hightower and left tackle Tommie Draheim Friday. Neither player suited up for the team during their last game, a loss versus Calgary Sept. 7.

Defensive back Scott Hutter will also be in the lineup. Defensive back Tyquwan Glass, linebacker Jonathan Walton and offensive lineman Kwabena Asare have been moved to the practice roster. Defensive lineman Jesse Joseph has been placed on the six-game injured list.

BY THE NUMBERS

0 — For all the love that Edmonton’s defence has received, they have yet to register a defensive touchdown. They also haven’t had a kick return for a touchdown yet this year.

500 — Ticats defensive end Simoni Lawrence needs one more tackle to have 500 for his career. He is 38th all-time in tackles.

33 — Ticats receiver Brandon Banks needs 33 more receiving yards to have 1,000 for the season. It would result in a third straight season with 1,000 receiving yards or more.

14 — Edmonton kicker Sean Whyte has made 14 consecutive field goals coming into Friday’s game.

Kickoff is at 9:30 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN and ESPN+, and followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker.
