Analysis

Winnipeg (7-2 SU, 6-3 ATS)
was able to double up the lowly BC Lions (1-8 SU, 2-7 ATS), 32-16. After failing to cover in each of the past three, the Blue Bombers were able to cover for the first time since Week 6. They’re a perfect 5-0 SU at home while covering in all but one of those contests. The under has hit in three of those five outings at home, including their Week 10 victory against BC.

For the Lions, they have really struggled both straight-up and against the number. They have allowed 32 or more points in each of the past five outings, with the over going 3-1 in the past four. BC has covered just twice in nine outings this season, and they haven’t covered in consecutive games. They’re 2-4 ATS in six road games this season, and 0-3 SU/ATS at home.

On Friday, Edmonton (6-3 SU, 4-5 ATS) was able to get back on track against struggling Toronto (1-7 SU, 3-5 ATS). The Eskimos posted the 41-26 victory, winning consecutive games straight-up for just the second time this season. Their over result was a rarity for the league’s No. 1 defense, as the under was 6-0 entering play.

For the struggling Argonauts, they’ve won just one of their eight outings overall, although they’re a respectable 3-3 ATS over the past six. They hang their hats on the fact the offense is finally starting to click a little bit, especially against some of the CFL’s upper-echelon teams. Toronto averaged just 12.5 points per game (PPG) in their first six outings, all losses, while averaging 27.0 PPG in the past two weeks against Winnipeg and Edmonton. As such, the over has cashed in consecutive games for the Argos for the first time this season.

Hamilton (7-2 SU, 6-3 ATS) was able to post the impressive 21-7 road victory at Ottawa (3-6 SU, 4-5 ATS) to keep a little distance between the top two and bottom two teams in the East. The Tabbies have won two in a row, and four of the past five, and they haven’t lost consecutive games straight-up this season. The ‘under’ has hit in four of the past five, too. The favorable schedule continues, as they travel to meet the lowly Lions next week.

Montreal (4-4 SU, 5-3 ATS) was angry after that ridiculous Week 9 weather-shortened loss. They took out their frustrations on Calgary (5-4 SU, 3-6 ATS), who have been very ordinary this season. The Alouettes snapped a two-game losing streak and non-cover straight. The Als have allowed 29 or more points in five of their eight contests overall. For the Stamps, they have managed 23 or more points in three straight, and eight of nine overall.

Team Betting Notes

-- Winnipeg and Edmonton kick off Week 11 on Friday night at Commonwealth Stadium. The Bombers enter 19-8 ATS in the past 27 against winning teams, 12-5 ATS in the past 17 overall and 7-3 ATS in the past 10 vs. West. They’re also 22-10 ATS in the past 32 road contest.

-- The Esks have posted just two victories in the past seven against winning teams. They’re 0-5 ATS in the past five following a cover while going 1-12 ATS in the past 13 in Week 11. They’re also 2-5 ATS in the past seven tries against the Bombers.

-- Ottawa enters the new week having over 28 of their past 39 on the road as they travel to Regina to battle the Roughriders. Ottawa is 4-1 ATS in the past five trips to Saskatchewan, while the over is 5-0 in the past five meetings in Regina, and 4-1 in the past five meetings overall.

-- The Riders have been hot against the number lately, going 5-2 ATS in the past seven at home, 5-2 ATS in the past seven against losing teams and 4-0 ATS in the past four overall. They’re also 4-0 ATSA in the past four following a bye. The under is 5-1-1 in the past seven at home for the Riders. However, the over is 4-0 in their past four after a bye, 5-0 in the past five meetings in Saskatchewan and 4-1 in the past five in this series overall.

-- Hamilton and BC hook up in Vancouver at Saturday night. The Lions limp in 2-10 ATS in the past 12 overall, 1-5 ATS in the past six against winning teams and 0-4 ATSA in the past four at home. However, they’re 4-1 ATS in the past five vs. HAM, while the over is 10-4 in the past 14 meetings overall in this series, and 9-1 in the past 10 battles in the Pacific Northwest.

-- We haven’t had a Sunday battle in a while, but Montreal and Toronto square off at high noon in Hogtown in Week 11. The Als are 10-2 ATS in the past 12 on the road, while going 10-3 ATS in the past 13 overall and 8-2 ATS in the past 10 vs. East. For Toronto, they have failed to cover eight in a row against the East while going 3-9 ATS in the past 12 overall. In this series, the Alouettes have covered 19 of the past 26 trips to Toronto, while cashing in five of the past seven. The under is 18-7-1 in the past 26 meetings in this series, and 7-2 in the past nine in Toronto.

-- The Alouettes look to rebound after a difficult loss against the Roughriders last week in that weather-shortened game. They face a tough trip to Calgary. Montreal is 9-2 ATS in the past 11 road games, while connecting in eight of their past 10 against winning teams.

-- The Stamps are 1-4 ATS in the past five against losing teams, and 1-5 ATS in the past six following a straight-up loss. However, they're 24-7-1 ATS in the past 32 games in the month of August. The under has been the way for both teams lately, going 10-4 in Montreal's past 14 road games, and 5-1 in the past six overall for Calgary. In this series, the under is 8-2 in the past 10 meetings, including 4-1 in the past five in Calgary. Montreal has covered eight of the past nine meetings with Calgary, too.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 11

Week 10 Betting Recap

Winnipeg remains the team to beat in the West Division with last Thursday’s 32-16 victory against British Columbia as a heavy 10 ½-point home favorite. Edmonton was able to keep pace in that division race with a 41-26 road victory over Toronto as a 7 ½-point favorite on Friday night.

Saturday’s CFL doubleheader of action kicked things off with Hamilton knocking off Ottawa 21-7 as a 2 ½-point road favorite to maintain possession of first place in the East Division. The stunner of the week north of the border was Montreal’s wild 40-34 overtime victory over Calgary. The Alouettes closed as five-point road underdogs.

Friday, Aug. 23

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (7-2 SU, 6-3 ATS) at Edmonton Eskimos (6-3 SU, 4-5 ATS)
Point-spread: Edmonton -3 ½
Total: 47

Game Overview

The Blue Bombers wrapped up the first half of their regular season schedule with their first cover against the spread in their last four games. The total stayed UNDER 52 ½ points against BC and it has stayed UNDER in three of their last five outings. Matt Nichols went a very efficient 10-for-12 throwing the ball for 179 yards and a score. Andrew Harris rushed for 70 yards to become the all-time CFL leader in yards from scrimmage for a Canadian player.

Edmonton remains just one game off the pace in the West coming into this week’s showdown. It has won three of its last four games straight-up with the total staying UNDER in six of nine games this season. The Eskimos faced Winnipeg on the road in Week 3 and came up short in a 28-21 loss as five-point underdogs. In Friday’s road victory against Toronto, Trevor Harris padded his lead as the CFL’s top passer this year with 420 yards through the air. Greg Ellingson was his top target with 10 receptions for 170 yards.

Betting Trends

-- Edmonton is 9-3 SU in its last 12 home games against Winnipeg, but the Blue Bombers have a 7-3-1 edge ATS in the last 11 meetings overall. The total has stayed UNDER in six of the last seven meetings in Edmonton.

Saturday, Aug. 24

Ottawa RedBlacks (3-6 SU, 4-5 ATS) at Saskatchewan (5-3 SU, 6-2 ATS)
Point-spread: Saskatchewan -10 ½
Total: 49

Game Overview

Ottawa’s fast 2-0 start has faded fast with just one SU win in its last seven games. The loss to Hamilton was the first time the RedBlacks failed to cover in their last four games. The total has stayed UNDER the closing line in four of their last five contests. With just seven points in Saturday’s loss, they have failed to score more than 16 points in four of their last five games. Dominique Davis only completed 20 of his 40 passing attempts for 238 passing yards.

Coming off last week’s bye, Saskatchewan has won its last four games both SU and ATS. It started the season 0-2 SU including a 44-41 loss to Ottawa in Week 2 closing as a 4 ½-point road underdog. The Roughriders are 3-1 ATS at home this season and 4-1 ATS in five games closing as favorites. Cody Fajardo is fifth in the CFL in total passing yards (1,871). He has completed a solid 74.2 percent of his 198 passing attempts and he has seven touchdown throws against four interceptions.

Betting Trends

-- Ottawa has a SU 4-1 edge in the last five meetings and it is 5-1 ATS in its last six road games against the Roughriders. The total has gone OVER in the last five meetings played in Saskatchewan.

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (7-2 SU, 6-3 ATS) at British Columbia Lions (1-8 SU, 2-7 ATS)
Point-spread: Hamilton -4
Total: 50

Game Overview

The Tiger-Cats’ lead in the East over Montreal remains at 3 ½ games at the halfway point of their season. Their lone loss within the division was to the Alouettes in early July. Two weeks ago, Hamilton beat BC 35-34 at home, but it could not cover as 9 ½-point favorites. The total went OVER 51 ½ points in that game, but it has stayed UNDER in four of its last five contests. Dane Evans continues to fill in for an injured Jeramiah Masoli at quarterback. Evans completed 24-of-39 passes for 299 yards and a score against Ottawa on Saturday. He also tossed a pair of interceptions.

The Lions’ current SU losing streak reached five games with Thursday’s loss and they have failed to cover the spread in five of their last six games. The total stayed UNDER 52 ½ points in that latest loss after going OVER in each of their previous three games. BC is allowing an average of 34.2 points per game which is the second most in the CFL. The offense is averaging 19.8 PPG during this current five-game slide. Mike Reilly went 16-for-28 throwing the ball for 177 yards and one interception against zero passing touchdowns.

Betting Trends

-- BC has lost four of its last five games against Hamilton SU, but it still holds a 6-3 edge ATS in the last nine games of this inter-division tilt. The total has gone OVER in five of the last seven games between the two.

Sunday, Aug. 25

Montreal Alouettes (4-4 SU, 5-3 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (1-7 SU, 3-5 ATS)
Point-spread: Montreal -6
Total: 55 ½

Game Overview

Montreal has been the biggest surprise in the first half of the regular season. Following a SU 0-2 start, it has now won four of its last six games SU and ATS. The total went well OVER 49 ½ points in Saturday’s upset and it has gone OVER in four of the Alouettes’ last six games. One of the big reasons for the team’s early success has been the play of Vernon Adams Jr. at quarterback. He threw for 389 yards and two scores against Calgary, but he was also picked off twice. He added another 38 yards and two touchdowns running the ball.

The Argonauts are going nowhere fast with just one SU win this season. The have closed as double-digit underdogs in five of their first eight games. Mcleod Bethel-Thompson continues to get the call at quarterback. He threw for 200 yards and two scores in Friday’s loss while running the ball five times for 38 yards. Toronto is averaging 16.1 PPG on offense while allowing an average of 35.3 points a game on the other side of the ball.

Betting Trends

-- Toronto is 4-1 SU in its last five home games against Montreal, but the Alouettes have the 5-2 edge ATS in the past seven meetings overall. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of the last nine meetings in Toronto.

29) Pittsburgh $71,358,858 (52-75)

28) Baltimore $72,659,323 (41-87)

Quote of the Day
“From an all-around standpoint, it’s an unbelievable basketball situation in that they’re in a great league right out of the [power conferences], sell out every night, charter everywhere, it’s a basketball-hot area of the country where it means something to people. I would say that’s one of the most underrated great jobs in the country. If you can get Dayton, I’d rather be at Dayton than a mid-level job in the ACC.”
Unnamed college basketball coach, on CBSSports.com

Saturday’s quiz

Since 2010, only one NFL team hasn’t won a Week 1 game; which team?

Friday’s quiz
Steve Spurrier was the starting QB for the 0-16 Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1976.

Thursday’s quiz
Oregon State’s teams are known as the Beavers.

******************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…….

13) We start today with a quick story……..

Back in the late 90’s, I coached Little League, 10-12 year olds. Did it for four years, was an interesting experience. Kids were mostly fine; parents, not so much.

My last two years, we had a very good team; there was this one team we always beat, and the guy who coached that team wasn’t happy about it, especially since most of the games were fairly close.

One day, we’re up two runs late in the game, and his third baseman makes a couple errors in a row; teams had 12 kids on them and everybody has to play, so six kids played the whole game, and six played three innings each. His third baseman was a 12-year old who was a pretty good athlete; we didn’t understand why the kid was a 3-inning player, but he was and he was having a bad day.

12) So the coach is getting on the kid pretty good; their dugout is right by third base and he isn’t letting up— we can all hear the stuff he is saying.

Finally, the kid takes a couple steps toward the dugout, looks at the coach and yells very loudly:

“HEY!!! You’re the one who put me here!!!” and goes back to his position.

One of the funniest things I’ve ever heard, just the way the kid said it, with disdain for this adult who couldn’t deal with losing a Little League game. Tremendous.

11) I usually enjoy HBO’s Hard Knocks, but I’m just freakin’ sick of Jon Gruden; he seems like kind of a jerk, and he’s been overexposed on TV. Go coach your team (at $10M a year) and be quiet. Thought HBO would wait until next year to feature the Raiders, since they move to Las Vegas in 2020, but I‘m guessing next year will be the Chargers’ turn.

10) This is coaching in 2019:

— Miami Dolphins’ coach Brian Flores says that veteran WR Kenny Stills hasn’t been playing well enough in camp.
— Monday, Stills ripped Jay-Z about his social justice partnership with the NFL.
— Tuesday, Flores played eight consecutive Jay-Z songs during practice.
— Why would a rookie coach troll one of his better players?

“……So that was the challenge — to get open, catch the football and make plays for this team, regardless of what’s going on outside of this building.”

Flores spent the last 16 years working for the Patriots, but I’m guessing he didn’t get that move from the Bill Belichick playbook.

9) Speaking of the Dolphins, whatever they do is their own business, but why the bleep would they start Ryan Fitzpatrick over Josh Rosen?

— Fitzpatrick will be 37 in November; Rosen is 22.
— Fitzpatrick is 50-75-1 as a starter, will become first player EVER to throw passes for eight different NFL teams. He’s playing for his sixth team in eight years.
— Rosen’s head coach got fired the last two years (UCLA, Cardinals), not exactly a ringing endorsement of the QB, but don’t they have to find out who it is they traded for?
—- Fitzpatrick didn’t even get a football scholarship in college (he went to Harvard) and is old enough that he played for Mike Martz back when Martz coached the Rams.

8) I used to spend a lot of my spring/early summer researching college basketball, because it would pay off in November, but the way the sport is now, I wait until about now to being my research because college basketball has very little continuity from year-to-year now.

The most talented players stay in college for about ten minutes, then bolt to the NBA; kids are always transferring (last year’s average was over two per team in D-I), so coaches are mostly patching teams together one year at a time. The best players from low majors often skip off to bigger-money schools, leaving their old schools in a lurch.

Makes for a very busy September/October, but thats the way things are now. Maybe when they let kids jump from high school to the NBA again, things will become a little more settled, but I wouldn’t count on it.

7) After I wrote #8, I saw an interview with Billy Packer online; the 80-year old former CBS analyst has some different opinions about stuff, but about college basketball he basically echoed what I said, that the better players don’t progress from freshman to seniors, because the better players are in the NBA before they’re 20.

6) One survey I read on-line tabbed Texas A&M (Buzz Williams) and Nebraska (Fred Hoiberg) as the two best new coaching hires in college basketball this season. I’d throw Eric Musselman (Arkansas) into that mix, but no one asked me.

5) Baseball stuff:
— Angels activated SS Andrelton Simmons from the IL
— Bryce Harper is on the paternity list this weekend.
— Tampa Bay 2B Brandon Lowe (hip) is out for the season

4) Kemba Walker scored 23 points as Team USA beat host Australia 102-86 in an exhibition game before 51,218 fans in a soccer stadium in Melbourne.

3) Most profitable starting pitchers this season ($100/start):
— Domngoo German, NYY 17-4, +$1,215
— Ivan Nova, CWS 14-12, +$1,166
— Lucas Giolito, CWS 17-9, +$1,130
— Brandon Woodruff, Mil, 16-4, +$1,097
— Clayton Kershaw, LA, 18-4, +$1,089

White Sox are 31-21 when Nova/Giolito start, 27-48 when someone else starts.

2) Least profitable starting pitchers this season ($100/start):
— Jacob deGrom NYM, 10-15, -$1,443
— Tyler Mahle Can, 4-15, -$1,038
— Max Scherzer Wash, 10-11, -$989
— Matt Boyd, Det, 8-18, -$982
— Jhoulys Chacin Mil, 6-13, -$927

1) Last five years, NFL divisional underdogs are 11-2-1 vs spread in Week 1.

RIDERS CAPITALIZE ON TURNOVERS TO DOWN REDBLACKS
CFL.CA STAFF
[/B]

REGINA — The Saskatchewan Roughriders scored 24 points off five turnovers to claim a 40-18 win against the Ottawa REDBLACKS on Saturday night. The Riders now hold a 6-3 record after winning five straight.

Saskatchewan’s defence stole the show early on with three straight interceptions on the REDBLACKS’ first three possessions. The takeaways led to 17 points on two rushing touchdowns and a field goal, and Jonathon Jennings replaced Dominique Davis at quarterback after that.

Jennings helped lead Ottawa to a pair of field goals before throwing a 75-yard touchdown to Dominique Rhymes late in the second quarter to cut Saskatchewan’s lead in half.

The Riders increased their lead to 16 points late in the third quarter after Cody Fajardo threw a 15-yard touchdown to Naaman Roosevelt, and a strip-sack from Loucheiz Purifoy led to William Powell’s second rushing touchdown of the game to seal the victory.

Fajardo passed for 241 yards while completing 24 of 36 passes and also added 38 rushing yards and a touchdown on five carries.

Jennings completed 16 of 26 passes for 208 yards in relief of Davis.

Riders defensive back Nick Marshall came up with a big interception to put an end to the REDBLACKS’ opening offensive drive. Marshall read Davis’ eyes the entire way and picked off the pass intended for receiver Brad Sinopoli on an out route. Marshall returned the interception 22 yards into Ottawa territory, and the turnover led to a four-yard touchdown run from Powell that put the team up early.

Saskatchewan’s defence kept rolling on the next drive when defensive back L.J. McCray picked off Davis for his first career interception. Fajardo and the Riders’ offence capitalized on the second turnover by putting together a four-play, 39-yard drive that ended with Fajardo scoring a 14-yard rushing touchdown. Brett Lauther kicked the extra point to give the Riders a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Riders’ defence stepped up again on the very next drive with their third interception of the half, as linebacker Derrick Moncrief made a brilliant read over the middle before accelerating and jumping the route for the pick. The interception led to a 46-yard field goal from Lauther, and Jonathon Jennings came in to replace Davis under centre.

Lauther added a 43-yard field goal early in the second quarter to extend the Riders’ lead. Jennings had the REDBLACKS driving later in the quarter, but a sack from linebacker Cameron Judge on second down forced Ottawa to settle for a 36-yard field goal from Lewis Ward.

Ward knocked through another 36-yard field goal to further narrow Saskatchewan’s lead, but the Riders added a single point when a dead ball was declared in the end zone after a 51-yard punt from Jon Ryan.

Jennings gave Ottawa its first touchdown score one play later with an accurate deep pass to Rhymes for a 75-yard touchdown. Jennings displayed impressive touch to place the ball where only his receiver could make a play, and Rhymes gained 38 yards after the catch to reach the end zone.

Saskatchewan added another field goal before half-time on a 49-yard kick from Lauther, giving the team a 24-12 lead heading into the third quarter.

The Riders added to their total again in the third when the REDBLACKS conceded a single point after a 56-yard punt from Ryan. Ottawa cut into Saskatchewan’s lead with a 44-yard field goal from Ward later in the quarter, but Fajardo responded with a seven-play, 75-yard touchdown drive.

Fajardo moved the chains for four first downs with completions to Shaq Evans, Emmanuel Arceneaux, Roosevelt and Kyran Moore before finding Roosevelt again for a 15-yard touchdown. Fajardo displayed his athleticism by spinning away from defensive lineman J.R. Tavai to evade the pass rush before throwing the touchdown strike to Roosevelt near the left sideline. Lauther added the extra point to put Saskatchewan up 32-15.

Jennings helped lead the REDBLACKS to a 32-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to make it a 14-point game, but the Riders added another point after Lauther’s 32-yard field goal attempt went wide to the left and out of bounds.

The Riders’ defence notched their fifth turnover of the game late in the quarter when Purifoy got to Jennings to force the fumble and recover the ball, and the offence capitalized once again with a 23-yard rushing touchdown from Powell on the next play to seal the victory.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders will host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Week 12 action next Sunday, while the Ottawa REDBLACKS will be off until they host the Toronto Argonauts in Week 13.

GAME RECAP
TICATS WIN DEFENSIVE BATTLE AGAINST LIONS
CFL.CA STAFF

VANCOUVER — Seven sacks and two interceptions helped lead the Hamilton Tiger-Cats to a 13-10 road win over the BC Lions on Saturday night. The Ticats now hold an 8-2 record after winning three straight.

Defence was the story early on with both units coming up with interceptions in the first half. The Ticats created constant pressure up front while getting to Mike Reilly for five sacks in the first half alone, and Hamilton tied the game up on the final play of the third quarter with a 52-yard field goal from Lirim Hajrullahu.

The Ticats capitalized on solid field position after a fake punt attempt from BC came up short in the third quarter, with Dane Evans leading a scoring drive that saw David Watford cap it off with a one-yard rushing touchdown.

Reilly threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Bryan Burnham with under a minute left to make it a three-point game, but the ensuing onside kick attempt was unsuccessful as BC’s comeback attempt fell short.

Defensive tackle Dylan Wynn had a big game for Hamilton with three sacks, while Ja’Gared Davis notched a pair of sacks. Defensive back Richard Leonard made one of the biggest plays of the game when he came up with a one-handed interception in the end zone to put an end to a promising Lions drive.

Garry Peters notched two interceptions for the Lions.

The Lions’ offence was driving down the field in the first quarter after fullback David Mackie hurdled Leonard on a 29-yard catch-and-run, but the drive came to a sudden halt when the Ticats notched their first interception. Reilly was hit by linebacker Justin Tuggle as he threw the ball, and defensive back Rico Murray picked off the pass in the end zone to send the Lions away without any points.

BC began to move the ball again after running back Wayne Moore gained 49 yards on a solid screen play, but a sack from Wynn forced the Leos to settle for a 45-yard field goal from Sergio Castillo to grab the game’s first lead with under seven minutes to play in the second quarter.

An acrobatic 22-yard catch from Jaelon Acklin gave the Ticats momentum towards the end of the half, but the Lions’ defence stepped up with an interception of their own to end the drive when Peters picked off Evans while the quarterback attempted to complete a pass to Brandon Banks.

Hamilton’s defence prevented the Lions from converting the turnover into points, and Hajrullahu made a 52-yard field goal as time expired in the half to even things up at three apiece.

The Ticats took over on downs with great field position in the third quarter after a fake punt attempt from the Lions fell short, as receiver Ryan Lankford was tackled short of the first down after catching a pass from punter Josh Bartel.

Evans then connected with Acklin for a 24-yard gain to move the ball further into BC territory, and quarterback David Watford took the ball across the goal line on a quarterback sneak four plays later to score the game’s first major. Hajrullahu added the extra point to give Hamilton a 10-3 lead with just over five minutes to play in the third quarter.

Shaq Johnson made a highlight-reel 37-yard catch while being covered by defensive back Frankie Williams to get things rolling for BC on offence, but the drive ended a few plays later when Reilly was intercepted in the end zone by Leonard. Leonard stuck close to his receiver and came up with an amazing one-handed interception.

A big 41-yard punt return from Banks gave the Ticats momentum with under ten minutes to play, and the team managed to add to its lead on a 29-yard field goal from Hajrullahu.

Peters added his second interception of the night down the stretch while covering Acklin down the right sideline, and the turnover led to a late touchdown pass from Reilly to Burnham. But the ensuing onside kick attempt was unsuccessful.

Week 12 will see the Hamilton Tiger-Cats host the Toronto Argonauts next Monday, while the BC Lions will get a week off before facing the Montreal Alouettes on the road in Week 13.

Sunday’s List of 13: Wrapping up a surprising day……

14) My quick thoughts on Andrew Luck’s bombshell retirement from the NFL:

I’ll preface this by saying that retiring/playing is entirely Luck’s decision, none of our business, but fact of the matter is, the Colts are probably worth at least $1B and Luck was the most important guy in the franchise. As Al Pacino said to Jamie Foxx in Any Given Sunday……..

“You’re the goddamn quarterback!!!!….you know that means?!?!?! Its the top spot kid. Its the guy who takes the fall, the leader of the team…..”

— Retiring on August 24 is horrendous timing. Not good, no bueno.
— He missed all of 2017 with an injury, missed nine games in 2015.
— Luck played six years in the NFL, was 53-33 in regular season, 4-4 in playoff games.
— Going 4-4 in NFL playoff games is no small feat; some other QB’s playoff records:
Dan Fouts 3-4
Joe Namath 2-1
Tony Romo, Ken Anderson 2-4
Matthew Stafford 0-3
Jim Hart 0-2
Kirk Cousins 0-1
Archie Manning 0-0

— Luck is leaving $70M on the table ($23.3M a year from 2019-21).
— Jacoby Brissett is now the Colts’ starting quarterback; the new backup will probably be Chad Kelly, who is Jim Kelly’s nephew.
— Can you imagine the people who drafted Luck in fantasy leagues or had futures bets on Indianapolis this year? Yikes.
— I wish Andrew Luck well; we all deserve to be happy/healthy. I’d have to hate my job pretty badly to walk away from $70M. Hopefully this will bring him peace.

13) NFL regular season needs to start soon, just to stop the tidal wave of fantasy football notes and opinions that swamp social media/cable TV every summer.

Here’s a hint about what will happen in Week 1 of the NFL:

NO ONE KNOWS!!!! Not me, not you, not the nitwits selling tout services, not the players/coaches themselves.

No one knows, and that is why it is so interesting.

12) Another reason college/NFL games have to start; ESPN2 televised freakin’ high school football games Friday. Right now, Dutch Fork leads Mallard Creek 7-0 as I type this, and I don’t know which state either school is in, though one is North Carolina, the other South Carolina.

11) Tennessee Titans’ LT Taylor Lewan has been suspended four games for violating NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances. Titans open the season in Cleveland.

10) Singer Rod Stewart once said that the next time he was thinking about getting married, instead he was going to go out, find a woman he hates, then buy her a house. I think he was joking.

Stewart has eight children by five different women.

9) I didn’t know that Sacramento Kings’ coach Luke Walton was named after Maurice Lucas, who was Bill Walton’s teammate on that great Portland team that won the 1977 NBA title.

Bill Walton mentioned that when he was on the White Sox-Angels game last week.

8) Mike Yastrzemski hit 17 homers in his first 75 games for the Giants, just like Willie Mays did.

7) Uniforms for Players’ Weekend aren’t good; the normal uniforms are just fine. Creating another set of merchandise to put in your next catalog in order to suck some more money out of consumers isn’t a great idea.

— What is the point of having names/numbers on back of an all-white uniform?
— Pitcher for the team wearing the white uniform cannot wear an all-white hat, so they had to make equally terrible looking black hats.
— Best part is that players can wear whatever shoes they like, so there are lot of weird colored shoes being worn.

6) Strange story of the day: NASA is examining a claim that an astronaut improperly accessed the bank account of her estranged spouse from the International Space Station.

She allegedly committed this crime while in outer space; who do you have on the jury for this trial, Mr Spock and Captain Kirk?

5) Orioles GM Mike Elias fired 11 members of the team’s scouting department and front office as part of an effort to turn around a team in the early stages of a major rebuild.

4) Baseball stuff:
— Milwaukee DFA’d P Jhoulys Chacin, their Opening Day starter
— Atlanta signed C Francisco Cervelli, who had been dumped by Pittsburgh
— Miami OF Brian Anderson broke his hand, is out for the year.

3) Team USA was -$500 to win the FIBA World Cup before they lost that exhibition game in Australia Saturday; they’ve been bet down to -$150 since then.

2) Never heard of Seth Moulton until he announced he was running for President; his attempt didn’t go too well, and he dropped out of the race this week. But Seth Moulton deserves to be recognized for what he’s done for this country:

Seth Moulton is a United States Marine who chose military service after graduating from Harvard. He was a platoon leader during his four tours in Iraq, during which he earned the Bronze Star and the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal for Valor.

This a guy who is worthy of all of our respect. Thank you for your service, Mr Moulton.

1) Washington Nationals have led in the 8th inning or later in each of their last 18 games, going 14-4 in those games.

Thursday’s 6-pack

How Nevada casinos made their money in July:

$10.5M— sports betting

$32.2M— roulette

$39.3M— craps

$77.1M— baccarat

$87.2M— blackjack

$307.1M— penny slots

Quote of the Day
“Just because you’re sitting behind a microphone broadcasting a game does not make you a journalist. It makes you a broadcaster. I think there’s a difference. That might seem a little quaint as well, but I think with the term journalist, you’ve had some actual training, and that there is at least a theoretical canon of ethics, and you’re there to tell the truth and let the chips fall where they may… Even the best team broadcasters in any particular sport wouldn’t necessarily be journalists.”
Bob Ley

Thursday’s quiz
Which (retired) quarterback has started the most games for the Los Angeles Rams?

Wednesday’s quiz
Lovie Smith was the Chicago Bears’ coach last time they played in a Super Bowl.

Tuesday’s quiz
Dan Reeves was the Falcons’ coach the first time they played in the Super Bowl.

**************************

Thursday’s List of 13: Doing some thinking out loud……..

13) Monday, a courageous soul in Las Vegas wagered $33,000 on the Colts (+7) in Week 1 against the Chargers. That gambler has lot of faith in Jacoby Brissett.

12) New England Patriots made two trades for offensive linemen Wednesday, addressing their need for depth on their front line.

11) Cubs 10, Mets 7— Chicago pounded Noah Syndergaard for eight runs in first two innings.

10) This is a little weird: Eagles backup QB Josh McCown will be on the sidelines at Myers Park HS in Charlotte every Friday night this fall as an assistant football coach, in addition to playing for the Eagles on Sundays, and practicing with the team during the week. McCown plans to fly to rejoin the Eagles on Friday night/Saturday morning each week.

9) Life for a marginal big league pitcher: Astros’ pitcher Cy Sneed has been called up from AAA/sent back to AAA five times in the last 48 days. Lot of frequent flyer miles.

8) Back in 2000, David Glass bought the Kansas City Royals for $96M; he is expected to sell the ballclub soon, with the price expected to be a little over $1B. Thats billion, with a B.

7) Baseball stuff:
— Dodgers’ 3B Justin Turner was suspended for a game for making contact with an ump.
— Giants DFA’d 2B Scooter Gennett.

6) Obscure stat of the day, from Christopher Kamka: Lou Piniella hit 102 career home runs, most ever by a player who never hit two home runs in a game.

5) Perk to being an NBA player: Myles Turner and Brook Lopez acted as roadies for Fleetwood Mac Tuesday night in Sydney, Australia— that must have been fun.

4) More and more, you hear NFL-types talking about how teams holding joint practices is more productive than exhibition games. The practices are over a 3-4 day period and starters can get 80+ good reps in different situations, and against other starters.

In coming years, we’ll likely see only two preseason games a year, and more joint practices.

3) Jeremy Lin signed a deal to play basketball in China this winter.

2) Indianapolis Colts now have $56.6M in salary cap space, $19.6M more than any other team in the league (Houston is 2nd).

1) Raise your hand if you’ve heard this before; USC QB Jack Sears will enter the transfer portal and will play elsewhere in 2020-21, as a graduate transfer, because he lost the starting job to sophomore QB JT Daniels. Apparently Sears is going to graduate from USC in only three years. Because of that, he can still be on the Trojans’ roster this year, and play elsewhere in 2020.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 12
David Schwab

This past weekend’s betting action in the CFL started with Winnipeg getting past Edmonton 34-28 on Friday night to pull off the upset as a five-point road underdog. The Blue Bombers now have a game and half lead in the West Division standings.

Saturday’s doubleheader of games got underway with Saskatchewan cruising to a 40-18 victory against Ottawa as a 9 ½-point home favorite. In the night-cap, Hamilton squeezed past British Columbia 13-10 but it could not cover as a 3 ½-point favorite on the road. Week 11 wrapped things up on Sunday with Montreal beating Toronto 28-22 while also failing to cover a seven-point spread on the road.

Sunday, Sept. 1

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8-2 SU, 7-3 ATS) at Saskatchewan (6-3 SU, 7-2 ATS)
Point-spread: Saskatchewan -6 ½
Total: 48 ½

Game Overview

This will be the first of a two-game home-and-home series between the top two teams in the West. Winnipeg is 5-0 straight-up in the division this season with a perfect record against the spread facing teams from the West. The total has gone OVER in three of the Blue Bombers’ last four games while averaging 29.7 points during that same four-game span. Chris Streveler got the start at quarterback for an injured Mike Nichols on Friday night and he threw for 89 yards while running for 95 yards and a score on 14 carries. Running back Andrew Harris will miss both games against Saskatchewan due to a league suspension.

The Roughriders come into this series with a five-game winning streak both SU and ATS. The total went OVER 49 points in the win against Ottawa after staying UNDER the closing line in five of their first eight games. This was the third time this season that Saskatchewan put up 40 points or more. Cody Fajardo completed 24 of his 36 passing attempts in Saturday’s win for 241 yards and a score. William Powell led the ground game with 70 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns on 11 rushing attempts.

Betting Trends

-- The Roughriders have a 4-2 edge ATS in their last six home games against the Blue Bombers. The total has gone OVER in nine of the last 10 meetings in Saskatchewan between these two West Division rivals.

Monday, Sept. 2

Toronto Argonauts (1-8 SU, 4-5 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-2 SU, 6-4 ATS)
Point-spread: Hamilton -12
Total: 51 ½

Game Overview

Toronto heads on the road this week at 0-4 SU in four previous road games this season while going 1-3 ATS. The Argonauts started this already forgettable season with a 64-14 loss to Hamilton as four-point underdogs at home. The total stayed UNDER 53 ½-points in Sunday’s loss and it has stayed UNDER in five of their last eight games. Mcleod Bethel-Thompson put the ball up 47 times against Montreal and he competed 36 passes for 464 yards and two scores and that was still not enough to win this game.

The Tiger-Cats continue to gain ground in the East Division standings with five SU wins in their last six games. They have gone an even 3-3 ATS during this run after failing to cover against BC. Hamilton is 5-3 ATS this season when closing as a favorite. The total has stayed UNDER in seven of its first 10 games played. The Tiger-Cats’ defense recorded seven sacks and two interceptions in Saturday’s grinding victory. Dane Evans continues to get the call at quarterback for an injured Jeramiah Masoli and he threw for 194 yards in that game while completing just 54.8 percent of his 31 passing attempts.

Betting Trends

-- Hamilton has covered the closing spread in six of its last seven home games against Toronto and it has a 5-1 edge both SU and ATS in the last six meetings overall. The total has gone OVER in the last five matchups.

Edmonton Eskimos (6-4 SU, 4-6 ATS) at Calgary Stampeders (5-4 SU, 3-6 ATS)
Point-spread: Calgary -2 ½
Total: 49 ½

Game Overview

The Eskimos slipped two games off the pace in the West standings with Friday’s loss. This will be the first of a two-game home-and-home against a bitter division rival. Edmonton lost to Calgary 24-18 on Aug. 3 closing as a slight one-point road favorite. The total stayed UNDER 47 points in that game. On Friday night against Winnipeg, Trevor Harris continued to light things up through the air. He ended that game with 430 yards passing after completing 26 of his 40 passing attempts. Harris currently leads the CFL in total passing yards with 3,481.

Calgary went into last week’s bye with back-to-back losses to Winnipeg on the road and to Montreal at home. It is 2-4 ATS over its last six games and 1-4 ATS in five previous home games this year. Bo Levi Mitchell is still listed on the six-game injured list and his status for Monday remains questionable. In his place, Nick Arbuckle has thrown for 2,103 yards and 11 touchdowns against five interceptions. Reginald Begelton has been his top target with 49 receptions for 702 yards and five scores.

Betting Trends

-- Calgary has a SU five-game winning streak against Edmonton at home and it has covered ATS in six of its last nine home games against the Eskimos. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last six meetings overall.

Armadillo: Sunday's six-pack

NFL doings:

— Buffalo released veteran RB LeSean McCoy, who then signed with KC.

— Titans traded WR Taywan Taylor to Cleveland for a draft pick.

— Giants cut QB Kyle Lauletta, a 4th-round draft pick last year.

— Patriots cut backup QB Brian Hoyer.

— Chargers cut backup QB Cardale Jones.

— Vikings traded a 5th-round draft pick for P/K Kaare Vedvik three weeks ago; they cut him Saturday.

**********

Armadillo:Sunday's List of 13: Wrapping up a college football Saturday

13) Boise State 36, Florida State 31:
— Seminoles led this game 31-13 with 3:00 left in first half; they didn’t score again.
— Plays from scrimmage: Boise 108, FSU 62. Boise had 38 first downs.
— Broncos have a good freshman QB in Hank Bachmeier (30-51/407 yards)
— Third down conversions: Boise 10-19, FSU 1-12

12) USC 31, Fresno State 23:
— USC’s QB JT Daniels got hurt; he was replaced by freshman Kedon Slodis, whose QB coach in high school was NFL Hall of Famer Kurt Warner.
— How was Jeff Tedford fired by Cal? Fresno has only 3 starters back on offense but they went toe-to-toe with USC here. Tedford is an excellent coach (Aaron Rodgers’ college coach).
— Fresno had the ball in the red zone in the last 2:00, but threw an end zone pick.
— Clay Helton went for it on 4th-and-1 near midfield with 2:20 left up 8 points; he didn’t make but was bailed out by his defense.

11) North Carolina 24, South Carolina 20— Mack Brown’s return to the sidelines was a success, though not before a mind-numbing mistake when they took a knee instead of punting in the last 0:20, giving the Gamecocks the ball on the UNC 47.

Tar Heels trailed this game 20-9 after the third quarter, but rallied with 98-95 yard TD drives for the win. Brown was out of coaching for five years; I enjoyed his TV work, but he seems happier to be back coaching.

10) Auburn 27, Oregon 21:
— Auburn started a freshman QB in its opener for first time since 1946.
— Ducks led 14-6 at half, 21-13 after third quarter, but were scoreless in 4th quarter.
— Auburn outrushed Oregon 206-90.

9) Houston Texans were very busy Saturday:
— Houston acquired LT Laremy Tunsil, WR Kenny Stills from Miami for two 1st round picks and a 2nd round pick.
— Texans traded DE Jadeveon Clowney to Seattle, dumping his $16M salary.
— Houston also acquired RB Carlos Hyde from the Chiefs, and DB Keion Crosson from New England in separate deals.

Houston’s Bill O’Brien is getting ripped on social media for these moves, but we’ll see how this all works out. Texans gave up 66 sacks LY, the most for a playoff team since 1999, so acquiring Tunsil seems like a good idea, even if they overpaid some.

Dolphins, on the other hand, seem to have given up on this season before Labor Day; giving away your LT and your best WR is similar to what the Raiders did LY when they traded Kahlil Mack to Chicago and Amari Cooper to Dallas for draft picks.

8) Best wishes to New Mexico coach Bob Davie, who was hospitalized after the Lobos’ 39-31 win over Sam Houston State with chest pains. No word on how serious it is.

7) Nebraska 35, South Alabama 21— Cornhuskers scored two TD’s in the third quarter before they ran an offensive play; a pick-6 and a punt return TD. Nebraska ran ball for only 98 yards, which is alarming.

Someone at Caesars Palace wagered $2,000 on Nebraska’s money line; he had to sweat a decent amount before he collected his $12.50 winnings. Not even enough to buy a decent lunch.

6) I-A teams that lost to I-AA opponents:
— Central Arkansas 35, Western Kentucky 28 (WKU led 28-14 after 3rd quarter)

Close calls/red flags:
— Iowa State 29, Northern Iowa 26 OT
— Kansas 24, Indiana State 17
— UConn 24, Wagner 21
— Minnesota 28, South Dakota State 21
— UAB 24, Alabama State 19
— Arkansas 20, Portland State 13
— UTEP 36, Houston Baptist 34
— Old Dominion 24, Norfolk State 21
— West Virginia 20, James Madison 13
— San Diego State 6, Weber State 0

5) Michigan State 28, Tulsa 7— Total yardage in this game was 303-80, MSU.

In college football, sacks count as rushing yardage; in this game, Tulsa had 25 rushes for minus-73 yards; they were 16-27/153 passing. Spartans’ defense scored nine points, as Tulsa botched two shotgun snaps that padded the ridiculously bad rushing numbers.

4) Upsets:
— Georgia State (+26.5) 38, Tennessee 30— Panthers were 2-10 LY, 1-7 in Sun Belt. Tennessee has its fourth offensive coordinator in four years. Learning takes time.
— Wyoming (+18) 37, Missouri 31
— Nevada (+11) 34, Purdue 31— Kid that made the game-winning 56-yard FG was put on scholarship after the game, meaning he actually got paid for making that kick.
— North Carolina (+10) 24, South Carolina 20
— Boston College (+4.5) 35, Virginia Tech 28

3) Wake Forest 38, Utah State 35— Both teams passed for 400+ yards; Wake converted 13-24 third down plays. State had 8 penalties for 84 yards; Deacons one for 15 yards.

2) Memphis 15, Ole Miss 10— Yardage was 364-173 Memphis; they led 13-0 at halftime, then held on for dear life.

1) A big problem with the epidemic of quarterback transfers is that it leaves more teams very thin under center. A starter gets hurt or struggles, and it is a disaster.

UCLA’s quarterback is obviously struggling, but the Bruins don’t have anyone with experience to step in for him— they’ve got all young backup QB’s, two freshmen and a sophomore.

Chip Kelly has some work to do; the kid was 8-26 passing and lost two fumbles in the red zone, not exactly a stellar performance in a 24-14 loss.

GAME RECAP
LAUTHER, RIDERS WALK OFF BOMBERS IN LABOUR DAY CLASSIC
CFL.CA STAFF

REGINA — Brett Lauther kicked a 26-yard game-winning field goal with no time on the clock, leading the Saskatchewan Roughriders to a 19-17 win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to start off Mark’s Labour Day Weekend.

Opposing quarterback Chris Streveler put the Bombers ahead with three minutes left on a third-down quarterback sneak, but the Riders stormed back after Cody Fajardo completed five straight passes, eventually setting up the game-winning kick to cap off a 10-play, 87-yard drive.

Fajardo finished with 300 yards and a touchdown on 25-of-39 passing, but also threw two interceptions. William Powell rushed for 59 yards on eight carries, including two first downs to set up the game-winning kick. Shaq Evans had 81 yards receiving and a touchdown for the Riders, but Naaman Roosevelt led the way with eight catches for 93 yards.

For the Bombers, Streveler completed 16 of 24 passes for 161 yards, a rushing touchdown and a passing touchdown, but was also intercepted twice, while Johnny Augustine rushed for 98 yards on 12 carries in place of the suspended Andrew Harris. Kenny Lawler also scored for Winnipeg, finishing with 67 yards on four catches.

The victory marks the sixth in a row for the Riders and 14th of the last 15 against the Bombers on Labour Day Weekend, while the two clubs will do it all again in Week 13 in the annual Banjo Bowl in Winnipeg, where the Riders can move into a tie for first in the West with Winnipeg.

It was a rocky start for Streveler in his first Labour Day Classic as a starter, as his second passing attempt of the game was intercepted by Riders SAM linebacker Derrick Moncrief. But the Bomber defence answered when former Rider Willie Jefferson sacked Fajardo, forcing a quick punt on the two-and-out.

On a punt single and a safety conceded by punter Justin Medlock, the Riders had a 3-0 lead until late in the first quarter. That’s when Fajardo got the offence moving, starting with a 17-yard completion to Evans followed by a 23-yard pickup by Kyran Moore. Facing second-and-goal from the 10, the first-year Rider would spot Evans in the end zone for six, capping off an eight-play, 69-yard drive to give Saskatchewan a 10-0 lead.

The first 15 minutes couldn’t have gone much better for the Green and White, which held the CFL’s top-scoring first quarter team to minus-10 yards through the opening quarter.

The Bombers wouldn’t be silenced much longer, however. With star running back serving his two-game suspension, it was a rare opportunity for Augustine. The undrafted running back out of Guelph juked out the Riders’ defence and sprinted 55 yards, moving the offence to the Saskatchewan nine.

A play later, Streveler found an open Lawler in the end zone for the touchdown, finishing a quick three-play scoring drive and pulling the Bombers to within three.

Fajardo and the Riders continued to move the ball on offence, but a promising drive was snuffed out at the Winnipeg three, leading to an 11-yard field goal by Brett Lauther. Another one from Lauther, his second, would extend the Riders’ lead, while Medlock’s late response made it a 16-10 edge going to the half.

Hemmed in at their own six-yard-line early in the third, the Bombers climbed out of a hole following a 32-yard pass interference penalty against Moncrief. A facemask penalty against Nick Marshall put the Bombers on the doorstep, but Loucheiz Purifoy read Streveler’s next pass like a book, intercepting the throw intended to Nic Demski to immediately end the threat.

The Winnipeg defence continued to stand tall, however, because a couple of plays later, Fajardo’s deep pass was intercepted by Winston Rose, turning the ball back over to the Bombers. The interception was a league-leading seventh for Rose as neither team could get on the scoreboard in the third.

Backed up at their own 13 and facing a second-and-12, Streveler made one of his biggest throws of the game in the face of pressure, connecting with Lawler for a 37-yard pickup. But the Bombers’ drive ran out of gas once again, as the second half shutout continued well into the fourth quarter.

Trailing by six with 10 minutes to go, the Bombers aimed to finally turn their field position edge into a touchdown when they took possession at around midfield. Slowly but surely it would happen, but it was no easy task for the Bomber offence.

After a long drive down to the Rider one-yard-line, Streveler’s plunge on third down was successful, giving the Bombers their first lead of the game — a 17-16 edge with just over three minutes remaining.

A holding penalty pinned the Riders deep in their own end in would what be the game’s decisive drive. Fajardo, though, making his first career start on Labour Day Weekend, was unfazed. The Riders’ pivot made five straight completions and Powell ran for a first down, setting them up inside the Winnipeg 30 and in field goal range.

Another first down run by Powell set up the eventual game-winning points, as Lauther’s third field goal put the Riders ahead for good.

Despite the slow start, the Bombers wound up 325 total yards and 21 first downs. Their total included 65 rushing yards from Streveler, who drops to 1-1 since taking place of the injured Matt Nichols. Darvin Adams was held to just one catch for 14 yards in his return from the six-game injured list.

Defensively the Bombers had five sacks, while the Riders combated with three of their own — including two from Charleston Hughes, who now leads the CFL with 12 on the season.

PREVIEW
ARGOS, TICATS KICK OFF LABOUR DAY DOUBLE HEADER
CFL.CA STAFF

HAMILTON — Mark’s Labour Day Weekend continues on Monday as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and the Toronto Argonauts meet in the annual Labour Day Classic at Tim Hortons Field in front of what promises to be a sellout crowd.

Both rivals will meet each other on the annual holiday for the 49th time in their respective histories, with the Argonauts looking to win their first Labour Day game since 2012.

These two teams last met June 22, when the Argos suffered a 64-14 blowout loss to their fellow divisional and provincial rival. But for this game, you can throw out everything that’s happened in the past.

“Anytime we lineup against the Argos, it’s a good rivalry,” Ticats lineman Mike Filer said. “(On) Labour Day, the atmosphere is so electric. We’re filling the stands. We’re getting the crowd into it. And for a lot of Hamilton fans, this is the biggest game of the season.

Records don’t mean anything at this point, this is the Labour Day Classic.”

“It’s always a different game, that’s the thing about rivalry games,” Argonauts quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson said. “No matter how good the records are, no matter how bad the records are, it’s always a fight from beginning to end. Everyone comes in with a different mentality. They’re always fun games to play.”

The Argos are battling for their playoff lives coming off a 28-22 loss to the Montreal Alouettes in Moncton. Even at 1-8 they’re still just eight points back of a playoff spot, but their hopes are fading fast.

The bright spot of late has been the offence, which has erased a difficult start to become one of the league’s more efficient units over the last month or so. With 2,256 yards, there’s a good chance McLeod Bethel-Thompson will be the CFL’s second-leading passer after this week, coming off a 464-yard performance vs. the Alouettes. Meanwhile, the Argo offence ranks third in the league with 359 yards per game.

On the other side, Ticats signal-caller Dane Evans will start Monday against Toronto, and he feels fortunate to be part of a game that carries so much importance.

“I feel really lucky that I’m in this position just to get to play in this game,” Evans said. “The fact that I’m the quarterback doesn’t mean anything. Just playing in this game at all is really cool. It’s really special. You can just feel it around this town, the buzz for this weekend.”

The Ticats have managed to keep winning even after their franchise quarterback, Jeremiah Masoli, suffered a season-ending knee injury back on July 26. Evans lost his first start but has since won three straight, including a hard-fought 13-10 win over BC on the road last weekend.

Evans, a 25-year-old sophomore, is the key to the Ticats’ success the rest of the way. Known for his strong arm, he’s completed 62 per cent of his passes with five touchdowns, six interceptions and 7.1 yards per attempt this season.

On Monday, a win would put the Ticats in the CFL driver’s seat with a league-best 9-2 record following Winnipeg’s loss on Sunday to Saskatchewan.

Both teams will have some key changes on the roster for Monday’s contest, including at the running back position. For the Argos, James Wilder Jr. is listed as the starting running back for the Boatmen after Brandon Burks was placed on the six-game injured list. Wilder Jr. last played in Week 6 and has 38 carries for 161 yards and no touchdowns so far this season.

Left tackle Roubbens Joseph will start Monday, ahead of the injured Isiah Cage who’s also on the six-game injured list. Defensively, Cleyon Laing will return from the six-game injured list to start at defensive tackle along with Davon Coleman. Toronto will also start Robert Woodson at halfback, replacing Kevin Fogg.

The Ticats are still without receiver Luke Tasker, but have also lost running back Cam Marshall to injury. Canadian receiver/running back Anthony Coombs gets the start in his place. Injuries have hit the position hard for the Ticats, with Marshall, Sean Thomas Erlington and Maleek Irons all on the shelf.

With receiver Jalin Marshall moved to the practice roster, the team will use Northern Michigan rookie Marcus Tucker. Defensive tackle Ted Laurent won’t start Monday, but he’s listed as a backup to Dylan Wynn. Linebacker Lukas Korol, receiver Justin Sumpter, offensive lineman Ryker Mathews, and defensive end Lorenzo Mauldin IV will draw into the lineup for Monday’s game.

Defensive end Adrian Tracy is also lost for the rest of the season with a triceps injury and has been placed on the six-game injured list.

BY THE NUMBERS

30 — Only one Labour Day Classic matchup between Toronto and Hamilton has ever ended in a draw. Both teams put up 30 points in a tie during the 2004 season.

5 — The Ticats have won the last five Labour Day games, outscoring their opponents 170-110.

7 — Monday’s game features the widest win-loss disparity between these two teams that favoured the Tiger-Cats. Hamilton has seven more wins.

311 – These two franchises have been battling each other since 1907; they’ve fought 311 times. Hamilton leads the all-time series 168-137 over Toronto.

Kickoff is at 1:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN and ESPN+, and followed live via CFL.ca Game Tracker.
