CFL Betting Notes - Week 19
David Schwab

Hamilton continued its push for the East Division title with Friday’s 34-20 victory on the road against Toronto as a seven-point favorite to kickoff Week 18 in the CFL.

In the first of a trio of contests on Saturday, Winnipeg blasted Saskatchewan 31-0 as a 3 ½-point home favorite to improve its position in the West Division playoff race. Edmonton snapped a three-game skid both straight-up and against the spread with a much needed 34-16 win at home against Ottawa as a 3 ½-point favorite.

Week 18 came to a close on Saturday night with British Columbia stunning Calgary 26-21 as a heavy 10 ½-point road underdog to move above .500 on the year.

Friday, Oct. 19

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-7 SU, 7-7-1 ATS) at Ottawa RedBlacks (8-7 SU, 6-9 ATS)

Point-spread: Ottawa -1
Total: 53 ½

Game Overview

The Tiger-Cats come into the first meeting in this crucial East Division home-and-home series with a SU 5-2 record in their last seven games while going 4-3 ATS. The total went OVER 53 points in Friday’s win at Toronto and it has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in their last six games behind a scoring average of 35.3 points during this same span. Hamilton’s defense has allowed 26.8 points over its last six contests.

Ottawa continues to struggle with consistency with a pair of wins followed by a pair of losses over its last eight games. It fell to 2-4 ATS over its last six games with Saturday’s loss to Edmonton. At the end of July, the RedBlacks drew first blood in their season series against Hamilton with a 21-15 victory on the road as six-point underdogs. The total stayed UNDER the 55-point closing line.

Betting Trends

-- Counting that earlier win this season, Ottawa is 7-2 SU in its last nine games against the Tiger-Cats, but it has failed to cover in four of its last six home games against its division rivals. The total has gone OVER in six of the last seven meetings in Ottawa.

Edmonton Eskimos (8-8 SU, 7-9 ATS) at British Columbia Lions (8-7 AU, 9-6 ATS)
Point-spread: BC -1
Total: 53

Game Overview

Saturday’s season-saving victory against Ottawa was the first time the Eskimos scored more than 15 points in their last four games. The total still stayed UNDER the 51 ½-point closing line and it has stayed UNDER in six of Edmonton’s last seven games. Mike Reilly threw for 369 yards and one touchdown on Saturday and he continues to lead the CFL in total passing yards with 4,974 in 16 games.

The Lions’ late-season surge has them holding on to the final playoff spot in the West as a crossover team. They have won five of their last six games SU with a 4-2 record ATS. The total stayed UNDER 49 ½ points in the upset against Calgary and it has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in nine of BC’s last 10 games. Newly added running back Tyrell Sutton gained 106 yards rushing on 22 carries in Saturday’s win and Travis Lulay was back in the lineup as BC’s starting quarterback.

Betting Trends

-- The first two games of this season’s series were split with the home team winning SU and ATS. Edmonton has the 4-1 edge both SU and ATS in the last five meetings and the total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in four of those five games.

Saturday, Oct. 20

Montreal Alouettes (3-12 SU, 8-7 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (3-12 SU, 6-9 ATS)

Point-spread: Toronto -5
Total: 50

Game Overview

The Alouettes’ current SU losing streak stands at four games coming off last week’s bye, but they have been able to cover in six of their last eight games. The total has stayed UNDER the closing line in six of those eight games behind a scoring average of 18.8 points per game. Montreal remains the lowest scoring team in the CFL with an average of 16.9 PPG.

Toronto’s loss to Hamilton last Friday was its seventh in a row and it has gone 2-5 ATS during this current skid. The total has now gone OVER in five of its last six outings with the Argonauts’ defense giving up an average of 34.3 PPG in that same span. James Franklin threw for 292 yards and two touchdowns against Hamilton and he also led the team in rushing with 44 yards on seven carries.

Betting Trends

-- Montreal won the first meetings this season 25-22 as a five-point home underdog heading into this East Division home-and-home series. Over the last 23 meetings in this rivalry, Montreal is 16-7 both SU and ATS.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (10-6 SU, 8-8 ATS) at Calgary Stampeders (12-3 SU, 8-7 ATS)
Point-spread: Calgary -9
Total: 49 ½

Game Overview

The Roughriders’ slim chances to win the West Division took a major hit with Saturday’s loss. This was just their second SU setback in their last nine games, but over that same span they drop to 5-4 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in their last two games after going OVER in their previous five contests.

Calgary is just one win away from capturing its third-straight West Division title, but there has to be some concern with its current form at 3-2 SU in its last five games. There is even more concern when it comes to betting on the Stampeders at 2-4 ATS over their last six outings. The total has stayed UNDER in their last two games with a combined 33 points scored. Calgary’s season scoring average is now 30.1 PPG.

Betting Trends

-- The first two games in this season’s series between these two bitter division foes were played in Saskatchewan with an even 1-1 split SU and ATS. The total did go OVER in each contest. Calgary is 10-2 SU in its last 12 home games against the Roughriders with a 4-1 record ATS in the last five of those matchups.

GAME RECAP

REDBLACKS ERASE 16-POINT DEFICIT; TOP TICATS IN FIRST-PLACE BATTLE

OTTAWA — Dominique Davis scored three touchdowns in short yardage, helping the Ottawa REDBLACKS erase a 16-point deficit on the way to a 35-31 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats on Friday night in Ottawa.

Davis scored his third touchdown of the game midway through the third, putting his team ahead for good to put Ottawa in sole possession of first place in the CFL East Division. The REDBLACKS also claim the season series, improving to 2-0 this year against their division rival.

Trevor Harris finished with 341 yards — including 211 yards in the second half — and added a touchdown on 24-of-32 passing. Meanwhile, Lewis Ward added two field goals, one of them being a 52-yarder, to set a new pro football record, passing NFL kicker Adam Vinatieri with his 45th consecutive successful field goal.

Jeremiah Masoli threw three first-half touchdown passes and finished with 309 passing yards on 19-of-29 passing, but was stymied in the second half as the Ticats were held only to a pair of Lirim Hajrullahu field goals.

Luke Tasker caught two of Masoli’s three majors, giving him five in the last two games and a share of the league lead with teammate Brandon Banks at 11 on the season.

The loss was a costly one for the Ticats, who were dealt injuries to top receiver Banks and shutdown corner Delvin Breaux.

The two teams square off again in Week 20 as the series shifts to Hamilton’s Tim Hortons Field, where the REDBLACKS will try to clinch a division title and first-round bye.

After the Ticats won the coin toss but deferred, the REDBLACKS couldn’t do anything with the ball and the wind at their back, going two-and-out and having to punt on the game’s opening possession.

On the other side, even against the howling winds on a cold evening at TD Place, there was no slow start for the Ticats’ offence. Jonathan Rose couldn’t tackle Alex Green in the open field on a swing pass on second-and-seven, a play that became a 40-yard gain into Ottawa territory.

A couple of plays later, Masoli’s pass to Tasker hung up in the wind and, despite Ottawa being called for pass interference on the play, was eventually hauled in for a 22-yard touchdown, giving the Ticats a 7-0 lead on the road.

Surrounded by 23,534 mostly-silent fans, the REDBLACKS got a big play of their own — and erupted the TD Place crowd — when Harris threaded the needle to receiver RJ Harris, resulting in a 58-yard catch-and-run. The offence couldn’t fully cash in on the opportunity, as Harris’ second-down pass fell incomplete in the end zone.

Lewis Ward‘s 44th consecutive field goal, a chip shot from 22 yards out, moved him into a tie with NFL kicker Adam Vinatieri for professional football’s all-time record.

After weathering the early storm from the visitors, the REDBLACKS siezed all of the momentum midway through the first quarter when Masoli’s pass was intercepted by Sherrod Baltimore, marking the first turnover of the game.

And again, with the drive stalling, it was Ward on the field, this time connecting on a season-long 52-yard field goal, cutting Ottawa’s deficit to 7-6 and, more impressively, moving him past Vinatieri with his 45th consecutive field goal.

The interception did nothing to faze Masoli, however, because the Ticats’ quarterback quickly went back to work. A 17-yard run by Green moved the sticks and got the ball rolling, and from there it was the Brandon Banks show, the receiver nicknamed ‘Speedy’ catching three consecutive passes, including a 33-yard catch-and-run to extend Hamilton’s lead to 14-6.

Masoli’s third touchdown pass of the half — and second to Tasker — extended the Ticats’ lead to 22-6. The scoring drive continued a torrid start to the game for Masoli, who approached 200 passing yards in less than a half of work.

With the first half dwindling and the game in danger of falling out of reach, the REDBLACKS mounted a much-needed response. Harris completed four straight passes, eventually setting up a short yardage plunge from short-yardage quarterback Davis to get the offence back in the end zone. Powell ran in the two-point convert, capping off a nine-play scoring drive to pull Ottawa to within eight points.

However, even with less than a minute remaining there was more than enough time for Masoli and the Ticats’ offence. An explosive return by Frankie Williams and a personal foul against Anthony Cioffi set up a Lirim Hajrullahu field goal, restoring a double-digit lead for the Ticats, 25-14.

The REDBLACKS rebooted at the half and came out a different team for the third quarter. Going with the wind and starting with the ball, it started with a pass interference penalty by way of a Rick Campbell challenge, which revealed that RJ Harris had indeed been interfered with.

The drive-extending penalty set up another big gain for Brad Sinopoli, who eventually got his offence to the one-yard-line on his second catch of the drive. A couple of plays later, Davis was into the end zone on his second short-yardage touchdown of the night, while RJ Harris caught the two-point convert, making it a three-point game with 9:45 to go in the third.

Hajrullahu’s second field goal of the game extended the Ticats’ lead to six points, but it didn’t stymie Ottawa’s early second-half momentum. Harris continued his hot third quarter, completing four straight passes to four different receivers, including a stumbling touchdown grab by Diontae Spencer in the back of the end zone to give the REDBLACKS their first lead of the game, 29-28.

With the REDBLACKS ahead going to the fourth, a career-long 53-yard field goal by Hajrullahu put the Ticats back in the driver’s seat early in the final frame.

But it would be short-lived, thanks in part to a careless penalty by the Ticats’ special teams. With Richie Leone on to punt the ball away, Sean Thomas-Erlington took a roughing the kicker penalty, extending the drive for the offence. An illegal contact penalty and, soon after, a pass interference penalty set the REDBLACKS up at the one again, where Davis scored his third touchdown of the night on the one-yard plunge, giving Ottawa the lead.

Ward would miss the extra point, but moments later the ball fell back into the hands of the REDBLACKS. A scrambled kickoff and a loose ball was batted out of bounds by Nigel Romick, giving Ottawa possession at the Hamilton 33. The REDBLACKS couldn’t score, and instead of attempting a long field goal opted to pin the Ticats deep.

Noel Thorpe’s defence continued to hold, while William Powell helped melt away the clock, picking up the majority of his 87 rushing yards in the game’s final minutes.

The Ticats were given one last reprieve when Powell fumbled at the Hamilton five with under a minute to go, but there wasn’t enough time, clinching a nail-biting victory in the nation’s capital for the REDBLACKS.

Friday night marked Hamilton’s eighth straight contest with a lead of double-digit points, but a darker cloud will hang over the Ticats’ flight home as the team hopes for good news on injuries to Banks and Breaux, two players that have been critical to their success.

Either way, they’ll look to regroup in time for the rematch on Saturday, Oct. 27, as the two clubs meet for the third and final time this regular season.

GAME RECAP

POSEY POUNCES: TRIO OF TDS LIFTS LIONS OVER ESKS

VANCOUVER — The BC Lions have punched their ticket to the playoffs.

DeVier Posey‘s three touchdowns in the third quarter led the Lions to a 42-32 victory over the Edmonton Eskimos at BC Place on Friday night.

Posey finished the evening with a game high 113 yards on five catches, while Lions quarterback Travis Lulay threw for 251 yards with four touchdown passes and two interceptions.

On the other side of the field, Esks pivot Mike Reilly had 268 yards through the air with one touchdown and no interceptions.

The victory guarantees the Leos a berth in the post-season. Meanwhile, the Eskimos playoff fate still remains up in the air. Edmonton is on a bye next week. A Winnipeg Blue Bombers win over the Calgary Stampeders in Week 20 would end the Green and Gold’s playoff hopes.

After a back-and-fourth start to the game that saw multiple lead changes, BC was able to pull away in the second half by outscoring the Esks 25-10.

The Esks would got on the board first midway through the first quarter after a punt return fumble by running back Chris Rainey . The Esks began their drive in Lions territory, but BC’s defence held strong, forcing Edmonton to settle for a 47-yard field goal.

The Esks were able to pin the Lions deep in their own zone on the ensuing drive that resulted in a safety to extend their lead to 5-0.

The Mike Reilly – Duke Williams connection was on full display early at BC Place. Reilly found the league’s leading receiver in stride along the sideline for a 47-yard gain. Williams made a highlight reel one-handed catch to set the Esks up inside the red zone.

Reilly capped of the drive with a touchdown on a quarterback sneak to give the Esks a 12-0 lead with 4:25 remaining in the first quarter.

The tables quickly turned in favour of the Lions.

Rainey would make up for the earlier fumble before the end of the quarter. On the kickoff following the Esks touchdown, the Florida product surged past Edmonton’s entire team and all the way to the other end of the field for a 95-yard return touchdown.

The Lions weren’t done there. An Esks fumble would put the ball back in the hands of BC just short of the red zone. Lulay capitalized on the turnover, finding Bryan Burnham in the pay dirt to take a 14-12 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The back and forth play continued as the half progresses.

Edmonton was able to regain the lead courtesy of a steady drive orchestrated by the reigning CFL Most Outstanding Player. Reilly moved the sticks by connecting with a number of receivers, eventually finding Bryant Mitchell in the end zone for a 23-yard major.

The Lions responded with a 30-yard field goal to narrow the deficit.

The Esks put some more distance between themselves and the Lions before the end of the second quarter when Edmonton linebacker Adam Konar anticipated a Lulay pass and picked off the ball at midfield.

The Esks appeared poised to score another touchdown off the turnover when Reilly found Mitchell for a 51-yard gain. However, the Lions defence was able to halt Edmonton’s momentum. Sean Whyte notched his second field goal of the game, this time from 14 yards out, to put the score at 22-17 at the end of the second quarter.

The second half was all about DeVier Posey.

Posey’s first major came on a short drive by BC. Lulay connected with Burnham for a huge 55-yard gain before finding Posey in the end zone on his next pass attempt to give the Lions a two point lead.

Posey went back to work on the Lions next drive, catching a Lulay pass and then running nearly half the length of the field for a game-changing 65-yard major.

But Posey wasn’t done there.

Last year’s Grey Cup MVP continued his dominant third quarter performance with his third touchdown in under 15 minutes. Lulay once again found his favourite target of the night late in the third quarter, this time for a 32-yard major, to give the Lions a 38-22 lead entering the final frame.

BC’s defence appeared to put the nail in the coffin when Otha Foster III strip sacked Reilly midway through the fourth quarter. The ball was recovered by Shawn Lemon to give the Lions offence possession once again.

However, the Leos did not have the ball back for long. Edmonton defensive back Aaron Grymes intercepted Lulay and ran the ball back 57 yards for a touchdown, showing the Esks would not give up quietly.

The Esks added a 40-yard field goal, but that was as close as the Green and Gold would get.

The Lions will go for their fourth straight win when the face off against the Saskatchewan Roughriders next week.

Saturday’s six-pack

— I’m not a big fan of 9:30 Sunday morning NFL games from London.

— Former Tennessee coach Butch Jones is now an assistant at Alabama.

— Raptors 113, Celtics 101— Really good game, better with Hubie Brown as analyst.

— Nets 107, Knicks 105— Caris LeVert with GW hoop; Knicks had only 3 turnovers (+19).

— Warriors 124, Jazz 123— Utah led this game 81-68 at halftime.

— NBA’s salary floor is $91.6M; the salary cap is $101.8M.

Quote of the Day
“Um, not as fast as you guys think it’s going to happen. I always kind of compare it to like instant oatmeal. It is not that fast. It takes a while to get to where you can close your eyes and know exactly where your guys are.”
Lebron James, on how long it will take for the Lakers’ chemistry to develop

Saturday’s quiz

Which four NBA teams came over from the ABA when the ABA folded in 1976?

Friday’s quiz
Olympia is the state capital of Washington.

Thursday’s quiz

Five current major league managers have won a World Series as a manager; Bochy, Hinch, Francona, Maddon, Yost.

**************************

Saturday’s List of 13: Clearing out a cluttered mind…..

13) G-League President Malcolm Turner announced that the league is implementing a “professional path” for would-be one and done college basketball players. The G-League will be offering $125,000 contracts, as well as access to NBA infrastructure and development tools.

Curious how many kids take this route, instead of playing college ball for a year?

12) Random movie trivia; remember when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was a co-pilot with Peter Graves in the classic comedy Airplane!?

Kareem was on The Rich Eisen Show Wednesday; he said when the writers of Airplane! were casting the movie, they wanted Pete Rose to be the co-pilot, but they were filming during the summer and obviously, Rose was unavailable since that is also baseball season, so they chose Kareem to play the role.

11) More trivia from the past; New Orleans Saints had the first pick in the 1981 Draft; Dallas Cowboys called the Saints and offered them a ton for the #1 pick, but the Saints kept the pick and took South Carolina RB George Rogers.

Turns out the Cowboys wanted the guy who got picked #2; a linebacker named Lawrence Taylor. Wonder whatever happened to him?

10) There are players from 43 countries in the NBA; for the 5th year in a row, every NBA team had at least one international player.

9) NFL stuff:
— QB Brock Osweiler will start again for the Dolphins this week.
— Buffalo will start QB Derek Anderson at Indianapolis. Anderson has started only four times (2-2) since 2010- his career W-L record is 20-27.
— Arizona Cardinals fired OC Mike McCoy Friday.
— Browns traded RB Carlos Hyde to Jacksonville for a 5th-round draft pick.

8) Tremendous catch by Andrew Benitendi to end Game 4 of the Red Sox-Astros series late Wednesday night; he misses that ball, and Houston ties the game, maybe wins it right there.

It is also an example of how a ballpark with a very short LF fence occasionally takes hits away from the batter. No way is Benitendi that shallow if he’s playing in a ballpark other than Houston or Fenway.

7) Wednesday, Milwaukee’s Brandon Woodruff became 8th reliever in postseason history to strike out 8+ batters in a game. Before him, Pedro Martinez, was the last to do that, in the ’99 ALDS, Game 5 at Cleveland.

Of course, Woodruff wasn’t really a reliever, but Wade Miley walked the first hitter, a lefty, and was then lifted, so technically Woodruff relieved.

6) Falcons’ WR Julio Jones has the 2nd-most receiving yards (707) in the NFL this season but hasn’t scored a touchdown yet; he’s now gone 11 straight regular-season games without a TD catch, which is really odd for someone with his ability.

5) My Blue Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook came in the mail yesterday; time to get serious studying college basketball.

In the last seven years, seven different teams have won the Big West conference tournament.

4) Speaking of the Big West, Mark Gottfried is the new basketball coach at Cal State-Northridge; one of his assistants is 80-year old Jim Harrick, who won a national title with UCLA in 1995.

3) Jaguars’ owner Shad Khan dropped his attempt to buy Wembley Stadium in London, which means the Jaguars won’t be playing half their home games there anytime soon.

2) Thru six games, Kansas City Chiefs have allowed 2,042 passing yards, the most PY any team has allowed thru six games, since 1940.

1) Here’s the thing about stealing signs: if you steal signals in football/baseball with the naked eye, more power to you; if you steal signals via technology, then you’re a cheater. Those are the rules.

ARGOS, ALS LOOK TO GET BACK ON TRACK IN TORONTO

TORONTO — The Montreal Alouettes and Toronto Argonauts may be eliminated from playoff contention, but that doesn’t mean the two teams don’t have something to play for on Saturday at BMO Field.

Pride, and jobs for next season, are still on the line.

Last year’s Grey Cup champions have lost seven straight. Meanwhile, the Als will be looking for their first win since upsetting the Ottawa REDBLACKS back in Week 12.

Montreal is coming off its last bye week of the season. The Als last played on Thanksgiving weekend against the Calgary Stampeders. They competed tough against the league-leading Stamps, holding them off the scoreboard for three straight quarters. However, Calgary found its game in the final 15 minutes and was able to pull off a 12-6 victory.

Montreal’s defence contained Stamps quarterback and former MOP Bo Levi Mitchell to just 199 yards through the air with no touchdowns while picking him off on three separate occasions. Dominique Ellis racked up a game high eight tackles with one interception.

However, the Stamps defence also played tough, preventing the Als offence from gaining any momentum. Johnny Manziel threw for 250 yards with no touchdowns and one interception.

Manziel is still in search of his first CFL win. The 25-year-old says despite the setbacks of the Als’ season, he is taking pride in his personal growth on the field.

“It’s taken me some time, more time than I anticipated to get up here and understand the schematics of this game that differ so much from the NFL,” Manziel told TSN 1050. “In the sense of learning and feeling comfortable with where I’m at in this league, which is different, I feel light years better than when I did when I first got to Hamilton earlier this year.

“I’m taking some small victories from it even though the end result isn’t where we want to be right now.”

With the season all but over for the Als, the team is trying to plan for the future. Montreal traded away linebacker Chris Ackie last week for a second round pick in 2019. They also shipped Philip Blake and Patrick Lavoie to Saskatchewan in a separate deal.

Now, over the next few weeks, Head Coach Mike Sherman can evaluate his quarterbacks — including Manziel — and other potential starters for 2019.

The Argos are also trying to look ahead after a disappointing 2018 campaign.

Toronto lost to the rival Hamilton Tiger-Cats last week at BMO Field, falling 34-20. The Black and Gold ran over the Argos defence, racking up 423 total offensive yards and finding the end zone four times.

The Double Blue were unable to keep pace with the Ticats’ roaring offence. Quarterback James Franklin threw for 292 yards with two touchdowns and one interception while S.J. Green had a team high 127 receiving yards and one touchdown on seven catches.

“Right now we’ve got too much air in our game in all three phases,” Head Coach Marc Trestman told Argonauts.ca after the loss. “It hasn’t changed. It’s really been that way throughout the season… As I told the guys, their effort and their preparation will never be questioned.”

Franklin will get his second straight start at pivot. The 27-year-old was given the starting role after veteran Ricky Ray went down at the beginning of the season. However, the Argos struggles led to the team turning to backup McLeod Bethel-Thompson midway through the season.

Franklin knows he is playing for the future and is trying to make the most of his second shot.

“I still want to see how great that I can be,” said Franklin. “Am I the greatest quarterback in the world? No. But I’m still pretty great. That’s one thing I really want to focus on and try and exploit that so I can become better for the team.”

With three games remaining, Franklin has his sights set on the CFL record books. The Missouri product has rushed for 12 touchdowns this season, tying a team record. He is two short of the CFL record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback that Doug Flutie set in 1991 with the B.C. Lions.

“It would be pretty cool,” said Franklin. “I never really thought too much about records… definitely never thought I’d be this close to a rushing record but it’s exciting. If I can do that it says a lot that coach Trestman is still calling quarterback sneaks and also the guys on the line really blocking and giving me and giving me the opportunity.

“It’s a big credit to them. They’re doing all the work and I’m just riding the wave.”

By The Numbers:

1 – Sack needed by Als defensive lineman John Bowman to reach seventh all-time, surpassing Stewart Hill. Bowman currently has 125 sacks in his career.

12 – Tackles needed by Als linebacker Henoc Muamba to reach the 100-plus tackle milestone for the second time in his career.

36 – Straight games that Argos receiver Armanti Edwards has made at least one catch.

82 – Receiving yards needed by S.J. Green to reach the 1,000-yard mark.

This week marks the first game of a home-and-home series between the Argos and Als.

Montreal took round one back in Week 11 by topping Toronto 25-22. However, both teams look much different this time around.

The last time these two teams faced off, Antonio Pipkin was at the helm of the offence for Montreal while McLeod Bethel-Thompson was leading the Argos.

This time, it will be Manziel and Franklin facing off.

Will the Als take the season series and with it, Manziel’s first CFL win? Or can the Argos snap their losing skid?

Kickoff is at 4:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN+.

RIDERS, STAMPS SET TO CLOSE OUT WEEK 19

CALGARY — Two West Division rivals look to bounce back from disappointing Week 18 defeats on Saturday night in Calgary, as the hometown Stampeders host the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

At 12-3, Dave Dickenson’s Stamps have all but locked up first place in the West Division — and could take that finite step with a win against the Riders.

Calgary’s offence looked sluggish in last week’s 26-21 loss, its first at McMahon Stadium in 2018, against BC.

As disappointing a performance as the Stamps put in in that defeat, it paled in comparison to Saskatchewan’s 31-0 loss to the rival Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Chris Jones’s Riders were limited to 170 yards of offence and quarterback Zach Collaros was yanked early in the third quarter as a previously red-hot football team was humbled in a one-sided defeat.

Saturday will be the rubber match in the season series between the two; Calgary claimed the first meeting 34-22, on July 28, while Saskatchewan scored a 40-27 win on Aug. 19.

The main storyline in Riderville this week: Chris Jones and his staff will make seven changes to the roster that was annihilated last week in Winnipeg.

Changes are happening fast and furious for the Green and White all over the field; Dariusz Bladek and Mic’hael Brooks out injured on either side of the trench battle, both for the remainder of the year; star D-end Charleston Hughes suspended; leading rookie Jordan Williams-Lambert returns to the lineup at receiver.

With a plethora of changes, Jones is hoping somebody will rise to the occasion late in the season.

“Leaders are made,” the head coach told Riderville.com. “You can’t just make a guy step up, (so) we’ll see exactly who steps in, and decides to not only say some things but do them.”

Veteran Pat Lavoie, acquired along with Philip Blake from Montreal in a deal 10 days ago, will start in the absence of the injured Devon Bailey.

Lavoie, a seventh-year pro, took first-team reps all week and believes his transition to the Riders has been made easier by his familiarity factor with Saskatchewan receivers coach Travis Moore.

“I worked with (Roughriders receivers coach) Travis Moore in Ottawa, so he prepared me well for the game,” said the Laval product. “The guys on the field, when I looked at them with the deer (in the headlights) eyes, they gave me the route. It went well.

“I’m just trying to be me…trying to be a good guy and help the young guys,” continued Lavoie. “My goal is to try to win games and not be a jerk. They’ve got good chemistry in the receiving corps, so I’m just trying to slowly fit in and not make too many waves.”

Chad Geter will start at D-end opposite Willie Jefferson in the absence of Hughes; the 24-year-old rookie out of FCS Gardner-Webb has tallied 28 total tackles (12 defensive, 16 on specials) and three sacks this season.

Despite last week’s loss at home, the Calgary Stampeders’ self-belief is not wavering.

It’s a franchise that has had too much success for too long a period of time to be shaken by a single loss.

“We’ve had good coaches here, good systems,” defensive back Brandon Smith told Stampeders.com. “They brought in a culture to where winning is the standard. Being around here for that long, it’s been a blessing to be a part of it.”

Smith will re-enter the lineup after sitting out last week’s defeat against the Lions.

“We have to just continue to do what we do,” said Smith, a 10th-year pro with 45 tackles and three interceptions this season. “We need to block out the distractions and focus on the game at hand, execute our assignments, play fast and play hard. That’s usually the recipe around here.”

Nila Kasitati slots back into the Calgary lineup at right tackle; the rookie out of Oklahoma has turned heads with his physical play on the line in his two previous games.

Star Stamps linebacker Alex Singleton is on pace for 121 tackles this season; if the 24-year-old all-star can break the 120 mark, he would become just the second player in league history to do so in consecutive seasons — the other being BC’s Solomon Elimimian.

“I just want to win games,” said Singleton, who co-leads the league in tackles (101) with Winnipeg’s Adam Bighill. “First we need to clinch the West.

“But if it happens, it will be cool when I’m older to look back on.”

Second-year linebacker Riley Jones looks to the example set by Singleton.

“Every day he’s in the film room, he’s on the field, he’s a leader,” said the UBC product of Calgary’s defensive leader. “He’s not always a vocal guy, but he always comes 100 per cent every day.

“He shows everybody that he’s making these plays for a reason, and that he was the defensive MVP for a reason. He’s got a great worth ethic, and if I can emulate that then I’ll be in good shape.”

By The Numbers:

6 — Years since the last time (Aug. 25, 2012) the Stamps and Riders met in a game with both squads coming off a loss.

6 — Total plays run in the Winnipeg half by Saskatchewan’s offence during last week’s shutout loss to the Bombers. The paltry 170 yards generated by the Riders were the team’s fewest since Sep. 12, 2015, when they managed just 169 (also against Winnipeg).

11 — Sacks this season for Calgary’s Micah Johnson, whose production has increased steadily each year the Kentucky product has played in the CFL; starting modestly with two in 2013, he’s graduated to nine in 2017 and has 11 already this season.

The importance of Saturday’s game at McMahon Stadium is obvious: Everybody wants to be playing their best football rolling into November, and both the Riders and Stamps were far from at their best in their respective Week 18 losses.

Saskatchewan pivot Zach Collaros has something to prove, after getting the pull in last week’s ugly loss; Calgary’s Bo Levi Mitchell has thrown four interceptions against two touchdowns over his last two starts.

There’s the redemption factor, but there’s also the standings factor: While Calgary is pretty much high and dry in first place, the Riders have Winnipeg hot on their tails — granted, with the tiebreaker against the Bombers — and have not locked up a home playoff game just yet.

So buckle up, because there are still 15 different potential West Division standings combination to sort out.

Kickoff is at 7:00 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN and ESPN+.

GAME RECAP

ARGOS TOP ALS WITH LAST-MINUTE TOUCHDOWN

TORONTO – James Franklin threw for 277 yards and ran for two touchdowns as the Toronto Argonauts snapped a seven-game losing streak in a 26-22 win over the Alouettes on Saturday. In the process of ending their two-month skid, the Argos prolonged the Als slump to five games on a back-and-forth afternoon where the winning touchdown came in the final minute.

In a battle of 3-9 teams that will not participate in this fall’s post-season, the Argos proved to have that extra ounce of mettle to rally them to a much-needed victory.

Toronto took early advantage of their chance to face the Als defence, which has allowed a league-worst 31.6 points per game this season. The Argos’ first offensive drive featured an electrifying 69-yard connection between Franklin and Armanti Edwards over the middle of the field. After a pass interference penalty brought the Argos right to the goal line, Franklin sidestepped into the end zone for an early 7-0 lead.

But Manziel stepped up on the following drive, hacking away at the Argos’ defence with precision passing and a 22-yard scramble to set up a 24-yard field goal for Boris Bede to cut into Toronto’s lead. The Als couldn’t get any closer on the scoreboard in the first quarter, but as time ran out, William Stanback burst free for a 72-yard run that set up a 37-yard field goal from Bede early in the second quarter to cut Toronto’s lead to 7-6.

The Argos countered with a 45-yard drive capped off with a 37-yard field goal of their own by kicker Drew Brown to give the home side a four-point lead. Despite another formidable drive by Montreal to battle back, the Argos came up with a big second-down sack on Manziel, then got some luck when Bede sent a field goal attempt wide left to keep Toronto in front 10-7.

Following an Argos punt, Stefan Logan managed a 30-yard punt return to set up Montreal, but once again the Als were kept out of the end zone, this time by a Marcus Roberson Jr. interception as time waned down on the half. But Montreal’s defence forced a quick two-and-out and Manziel finally broke through with five straight completions to feed Eugene Lewis an 11-yard touchdown pass with seven seconds left to give the visitors a 14-10 lead at halftime.

The Argos put together a long, productive drive to start off the second half, as Franklin took the offence from their own 28 yard line to the Als’ four, but Toronto had to settle for a short field goal which trimmed Montreal’s lead to 14-13. The Argos defence forced a quick punt, but the Als one-upped the Argos’ defence by forcing a first-down pick-six by Tevaughn Campbell to give Montreal a 21-13 lead.

The Argos answered back with three points on the next drive, then Brown eventually converted a fourth straight field goal r to cut Montreal’s lead to 21-19 with under seven minutes remaining in the game. To help the Argos’ rally, Bede missed his second field goal of the afternoon to give Toronto a fighting chance shortly after the three-minute warning.

Running their two-minute drill, the Argos kept fans on their toes with an entertaining final stand. Branden Burks busted through the Als’ line for a crucial 12-yard gain on a third down, and Edwards caught a trio of passes to advance the Argos’ drive. Some help from an Als’ pass interference penalty in the end zone placed the Argos on the one-yard line inside the final minute. Franklin made sure he finished the job with a go-ahead one-yard sneak into the end zone that tied Doug Flutie in all-time CFL rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.

The two sides showed they will have plenty to play for in the rematch next Sunday in Montreal.

GAME RECAP

RIDERS DOWN STAMPS TO STAY IN HUNT FOR FIRST IN WEST

CALGARY — The Saskatchewan Roughriders improved their record to 11-6 with a 29-24 road win against the division-leading Calgary Stampeders on Saturday night, keeping the team in the mix for first in the West Division.

Quarterback Zach Collaros looked sharp all game long, completing 24 of 35 passes for 352 yards while putting together lengthy scoring drives against the Stamps’ top-ranked defence. The victory was the 20th 300-yard passing performance of Collaros’ career.

Kicker Brett Lauther had another huge game for the Riders, making all five of his field goal attempts. Lauther now leads the league with 50 field goals on the season.

Jordan Williams-Lambert led all receivers on the night with five catches for 113 yards, including 51 total yards after the catch. The 24-year-old receiver consistently gained extra yards and to move the chains for four quarters. Tre Mason and Nick Marshall both added rushing scores for the Riders.

Saskatchewan’s defence managed to contain Bo Levi Mitchell early on, limiting the quarterback to only 48 passing yards in the opening half. Mitchell finished with 221 passing yards and two touchdowns as the offence came to life in the second half, but an interception in the end zone and a number of long offensive drives from the Riders sealed the victory.

Collaros looked sharp on the opening drive, throwing a quick strike to Shaq Evans for a 26-yard gain that set up a 50-yard field goal from Lauther to open the scoring. But the Riders’ early lead didn’t last long, as Calgary came up with a big play on special teams just over two minutes later.

Romar Morris caught a 46-yard Saskatchewan punt and juked his way through a narrow gap into the open field for a 78-yard touchdown. Rene Paredes kicked the convert to give Calgary an early 7-3 lead.

Saskatchewan came up with a key special teams return of their own on the very next play when Cameron Marshall accelerated up the field for a 58-yard kickoff return. The big return set up Collaros and the Riders’ offence at the Stamps’ 47-yard line, and the veteran quarterback made the most of the solid field position. Collaros dropped back and found Williams-Lambert for two quick gains of 28 and 15 yards to put the Riders in position to score.

Mason finished the drive off with a four-yard touchdown run, smashing his way into the end zone to give the lead back to Saskatchewan. Lauther added the extra point to make it a 10-7 game.

The Stamps battled back to tie it up at 10 apiece with a 25-yard field goal from Peredes before the end of the first quarter. Running back Don Jackson was instrumental in setting up the score, gaining three first downs on the drive with a combination of quickness and vision.

Receiver Chris Matthews helped put the Stamps in field goal range with an impressive 27-yard catch, and Mitchell did the rest with an 18-yard strike to reliable Stamps target Eric Rogers.

The Riders managed to retake the lead early in the second quarter after receiver Kyran Moore exploded for a 42-yard catch-and-run. Moore nearly scored on the play before Stamps defensive back Tre Roberson came through with the touchdown-saving tackle.

Collaros connected with Evans on the next play for a 14-yard gain that set up a 27-yard field goal from Lauther, putting the Green and White back on top 13-10.

Lauther extended the Riders’ lead with a 49-yard field goal near the end of the half. Williams-Lambert showed his ability to move the chains once again on the scoring drive, using his speed and power to gain 19 yards after the catch on a 24-yard pickup.

Lauther added a 31-yard field goal on the final play of the half after first down pickups from Cameron Marshall, Patrick Lavoie and K.D. Cannon put the Riders in range.

The Stamps’ offence came to life after the half, and Mitchell drove his team down the field for a touchdown on the opening drive of the third quarter. Mitchell displayed sharp accuracy to find Markeith Ambles, Juwan Brescacin and Romar Morris for first down gains on the drive.

Ambles then took a short pass and almost scored by gaining 14 yards after the catch and diving out near the pylon. Mitchell capped the impressive drive off with a four-yard touchdown pass to receiver Lemar Durant two plays later.

Jackson added a successful two-point conversion with a two-yard rush to the right side, bringing the Stamps within one point in the third quarter at 19-18.

But the Riders answered back right away, as versatile playmaker Nick Marshall flashed game-changing speed on a 24-yard run that brought the team down to the Stamps’ eight yard line. Calgary’s defence held strong to force Lauther’s fifth field goal of the night, a 20-yarder that gave the Riders a 22-18 lead.

The Stamps’ offence appeared to be driving to take the lead on the next drive after a 27-yard catch from Rogers, but Saskatchewan’s defence stepped up with a crucial turnover when safety Mike Edem picked off Mitchell in the back of the end zone while covering Rogers.

Saskatchewan extended their lead to 11 points in the fourth quarter after Collaros helped lead an 11 play, 85-yard scoring drive. Collaros completed big passes to Evans and Cannon on the drive, and Nick Marshall finished it off with a one-yard touchdown run. Lauther added the extra point to give Saskatchewan the 29-18 lead.

Ambles brought Calgary closer with 13-yard touchdown catch with just over five minutes to play, but Ambles’ two-point convert attempt ultimately failed due to a clutch tackle from defensive back Ed Gainey, leaving the final score at 29-24.

The Calgary Stampeders will look to bounce back when they travel to take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers next Friday in Week 20 action, while The Saskatchewan Roughriders will look for their 12th win of the season when they host the BC Lions next Saturday.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 20
David Schwab

Last Friday night in the first matchup in an East Division home-and-home series between Hamilton and Ottawa, the RedBlacks took a big step toward locking up first place with a 35-31 victory at home as slight 1 ½-point underdogs.

Later that night, British Columbia secured a spot in the postseason with a 42-32 victory against West Division rival Edmonton as a 1 ½-point favorite at home.

Saturday’s CFL action got underway with Toronto squeezing past Montreal 26-22 at home, but it could not cover the closing 4 ½-point spread. Saskatchewan was able to keep things interesting in the West Division title race with a 29-24 upset against first-place Calgary as a nine-point road underdog.

Friday, Oct. 26

Calgary Stampeders (12-4 SU, 8-8 ATS) at Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-7 SU, 9-6-1 ATS)

Point-spread: Winnipeg -3 ½
Total: 53 ½

Game Overview

Calgary has dropped its last two games as a heavy home favorite starting with a Week 18 loss to British Columbia. The Stampeders beat Winnipeg 39-26 on Aug. 25 to cover as 7 ½-point favorites at home, but since that point they are 4-3 straight-up and a costly 2-5 against the spread. The total went OVER 49 ½ points in Saturday’s loss and it has gone OVER in four of their last six games.

The Blue Bombers still control their own destiny for the final playoff berth coming off last week’s bye. They have a game and a half lead over Edmonton heading into this Friday’s contest. Winnipeg has won its last four games both SU and ATS with the total staying UNDER in three of those outings. It remains one of the highest scoring teams in the league and its scoring average during this current winning streak stands a 33.0 points per game.

Betting Trends

-- The Stampeders have won their last five home games against Winnipeg SU and they have a 5-1-1 edge ATS in the last seven meetings in Calgary. The total has gone OVER in five of the last seven matchups in this West Division clash.

Saturday, Oct. 27

Ottawa RedBlacks (9-7 SU, 7-9 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-8 SU, 7-8-1 ATS)

Point-spread: Hamilton -3
Total: 54 ½

Game Overview

Ottawa can lock up the East Division title with a series sweep this Saturday. Hamilton jumped out to a 25-14 lead at the half in last week’s game, but the RedBlacks’ defense stepped things up by holding the Tiger-Cats to just six points in the final two quarters. Ottawa’s Trevor Harris played to form by completing 24 of his 32 passing attempts for 341 yards and one score. Dominique Davis scored a trio of rushing touchdowns on just four rushing attempts.

The Tiger-Cats lost the first meeting this season in a 21-15 setback as six-point home favorites in late July. More recently, Friday’s loss dropped them to 2-3 SU and ATS over their last five games. The total went OVER 54 ½ points on Friday night and it has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in Hamilton’s last seven outings.

Betting Trends

-- With a pair of victories this season, Ottawa is 4-1 SU in its last five games against the Tiger-Cats with the total going OVER in six of the last nine meetings in this East Division clash.

British Columbia Lions (9-7 AU, 10-6 ATS) at Saskatchewan Roughriders (11-6 SU, 9-8 ATS)
Point-spread: Saskatchewan -4
Total: 52

Game Overview

This should be a great game between a pair of teams playing their best ball at the right time of the year. BC has won six of its last seven games SU with a 5-2 record ATS. The total went OVER 52 ½ points in Friday’s win against Edmonton after staying UNDER or ending as a PUSH in nine of the Lions’ previous 10 games. Travis Lulay shook off the rust from last week’s shaky start to throw for four touchdowns against the Eskimos.

The Roughriders have just two SU losses in their last 10 games, but they have been less reliable as a betting ream with a 2-4 mark ATS in their last six contests. The total went OVER 49 ½ points against Calgary and it has gone OVER in six of their last eight games. Zach Collaros lit things up for Saskatchewan on Saturday with 352 yards passing while completing 68.6 percent of his 35 passing attempts. The Roughriders added another 140 yards rushing on 24 attempts.

Betting Trends

-- The Lions have won seven of the last nine meetings SU and ATS with a 5-1 edge ATS in their last six road games against Saskatchewan. The total has stayed UNDER in four of the last five meetings overall.

Sunday, Oct. 28

Toronto Argonauts (4-12 SU, 6-10 ATS) at Montreal Alouettes (3-13 SU, 9-7 ATS)

Point-spread: Montreal -1
Total: 49 ½

Game Overview

Toronto has the early edge for staying out of the basement in the East coming into this season as the defending Grey Cup Champion. Things have been headed in the wrong direction for quite some time with Saturday’s victory snapping a SU seven-game losing streak. The Argonauts are 2-6 ATS in their last eight games with the total going OVER in five of their last seven games.

The only bright spot in Montreal’s three-win campaign is a winning record ATS. The current losing streak stands at five games, but it has been able to cover in each of its last three outings. The total stayed UNDER 50 points against Toronto and it has stayed UNDER in six of the Alouettes’ last seven games. Johnny Manziel continues to get the start at quarterback and he threw for 220 yards and one score in Saturday’s losing effort.

Betting Trends

-- The Alouettes are 4-1 both SU and ATS in their last five home games against the Argonauts with the total staying UNDER in five of the last six meetings in Montreal.
