REDBLACKS LOOK TO STALL HIGH-FLYING BOMBERS ON FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

WINNIPEG — While their records may be identical at 5-3, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and Ottawa REDBLACKS have taken vastly different paths to their Week 10 meeting at Investors Group Field this Friday.

After a slow start out of the gate with rookie quarterback Chris Streveler at the controls, the Bombers have surged to three straight victories against eastern opponents and sit tied for second in the West.

Ottawa, meanwhile, has gotten the job done more often than not without looking dominant — 23-point win over the Riders back in Week 2 aside. Two unconvincing wins against Montreal and a late-game collapse against the Argos in Week 8 have left the door open in the East Division.

Thus, as the CFL schedule inches toward the season’s second half and division races heat up, games like Friday’s become ever more important: Winnipeg will see it as a winnable home game against an eastern opponent, while the REDBLACKS will see this as a game they could pick up on their divisional rivals.

There is little doubt that Investors Group Field has been an unwelcoming place for eastern visitors.

Hamilton? 29-23 loss. Toronto? 40-14 beatdown.

The Bombers are 4-1 overall against the East this season, and Head Coach Rick Campbell and his REDBLACKS staff know they are in for a challenge come Friday.

Campbell specifically knows Winnipeg quarterback Matt Nichols well.

“I’ve known Matt a long time — he lives in my old hometown — and he’s a winner,” Campbell told OttawaREDBLACKS.com. “That’s how he was in college too. He’s been in this league a long time now, between his time in Edmonton and Winnipeg.”

Ottawa’s own offence will be looking to build on a strong 587-yard performance in last week’s 24-17 win over Montreal.

“We like to spread the ball around, that way we don’t have any tendencies and cues,” explained quarterback Trevor Harris, who threw for the second-most completions in a single game (44) in CFL history against Montreal. “We do a lot of different things. In-breakers, out-breakers, we push the ball down the field. Screens, draws, pocket movements, we run the ball well. Any time you can do that, it’s tough for a defence.”

The REDBLACKS defence will get a boost with the return of Anthony Cioffi at SAM linebacker; the 23-year-old Rutgers product recorded seven tackles, two sacks and scored a touchdown in his last two outings prior to missing the Montreal game.

Veteran Mike Klassen will slide onto the interior part of the D-line, replacing George Uko who landed the one-game injured list. Klassen has seen his share of snaps in rotation duty this season, recording 16 tackles and a sack in eight games.

Ottawa has had increasingly strong production from rookie receiver R.J. Harris; the New Hampshire alum has had 50 or more receiving yards in each of the team’s last four games, and hauled in his first career touchdown last week against the Alouettes.

On the Winnipeg side of the matchup, Head Coach Mike O’Shea’s team is in the midst of the logjam that is the West Division.

With Ottawa visiting IGF on Friday night, the Bombers defence knows it will have to be sharp against the REDBLACKS’ varied offence.

“Everything really runs through Trevor Harris, he’s executing a high level right now,” league-leading tackler Adam Bighill told BlueBombers.com. “They run the ball really well with (William) Powell, (and) they’re a ball-control offence that for the most part is really good with the ball.”

Safety Taylor Loffler understands the threat posed by Ottawa’s lanky 1-2 receiving punch.

“You’ve got (Greg) Ellingson and (Brad) Sinopoli, two big guys, great route runners and they always know how to find the openings in your defence because one was a quarterback and the other is just a great receiver,” explained Loffler. “It means you have to know where the holes are in your defence, because they’re going to know where they are. You just try to make those windows as small as you can.”

One of the major storylines entering Friday’s contest is the running back battle: Winnipeg’s Andrew Harris leads the league with 720 rush yards, while Ottawa’s William Powell ranks second with 608.

While broadcasters, journalists and Fantasy GMs alike will be fixated on the matchup, Harris insists he’s not interested in the narrative.

“He’s definitely a good player you notice makes plays. He’s a guy that can catch the ball really well, too, and is explosive in the receiving aspect as well,” said Harris. “But when we’re playing head-to-head and against each other, I’m not really focused on what he’s doing.”

The Bombers will make one solitary change to the roster that downed the Ticats last week, as Ryan Lankford enters in place of the six-gamed Weston Dressler.

The 26-year-old Lankford has been biding his time after being relegated to the practice roster this season.

“(Lankford) understands the crappy part of the business and manages to put in great effort all day, every day. That, to me, would be a good definition of what a ‘pro’ is,” explained Coach O’Shea. “He had an amazing training camp, he’s a helluva returner, a very good pro.”

Crunchin’ Numbers:

.500 – Matt Nichols’s record against the REDBLACKS in his last six starts dating back to 2015; he lost three in a row to Henry Burris (2015-16), and has won the three most recent matchups against Brock Jensen (2016), Trevor Harris and Ryan Lindley (2017).

4.8 – Yards per first-down rush for Ottawa, the lowest mark in the CFL. Winnipeg, in contrast, averages a league-best 6.2 yards when running on first down.

5 – Straight games in which Winnipeg has had a 16-point lead; the team record is six, set in Sept.-Nov. 1981.

60 – Receptions in eight games for Ottawa’s Brad Sinopoli, the most in the league by nine. Sinopoli is one of just three players (Allen Pitts, Derrell Mitchell) to reach the 60-reception mark in the first eight games of a season.

Talk about a juicy matchup: The Bombers and REDBLACKS, both 5-3 and fashioning themselves as playoff contenders in their respective divisions, under the lights at Investors Group Field.

The storylines are plentiful.

Andrew Harris versus William Powell in a battle of the league’s two best running backs; the chess match at the line of scrimmage between Winnipeg’s elite O-line and an Ottawa D-line which has the tools but lacked consistency in 2018; Ryan Lankford’s redemption story as he re-enters the lineup.

Trevor Harris and Matt Nichols both continuing their quest to join Bo Levi Mitchell and Mike Reilly in the league’s ‘elite’ quarterback group.

Buckle up.

Kickoff is at 8:30 p.m. ET and can be seen on TSN, RDS and ESPN+.

GAME RECAP

REDBLACKS DEFEAT BOMBERS IN DOMINANT PERFORMANCE AT IGF

WINNIPEG — Backup quarterback Dominique Davis scored twice as the Ottawa REDBLACKS defeated the Winnipeg Blue Bombers 44-21 on Friday night at Investors Group Field.

The REDBLACKS were firing on all cylinders on the warm Winnipeg night, scoring on offence and defence on route to their second-straight win. Trevor Harris – who threw for 361 yards and completed 29 of 39 passes – spread the ball around to six different receivers, including Dominique Rhymes, who scored his first CFL touchdown.

Greg Ellingson had another big night for the REDBLACKS, hauling in 100 yards on eight catches. William Powell also hit the 100-yard mark, rushing 18 times for 106 yards and a touchdown.

On defence, Avery Williams scooped up a Matt Nichols fumble and ran it to the house for the major score while as a unit the defence held the Bombers to six two-and-outs on the evening and no points in the second quarter.

For the Bombers, Darvin Adams scored twice and collected 162 yards receiving while Andrew Harris continued his success in 2018, finding the end zone on a direct snap in the third quarter. Nichols finished the night connecting on 23 of 35 passes for 291 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

Ottawa opened the scoring on Friday night as Davis scored on a quarterback sneak to cap a 10-play, 66-yard drive for the visitors. Harris connected with Ellingson on the two-point convert and the REDBLACKS took a 8-0 lead mid-way through the first quarter.

After a two-and-out on their first drive, the Bombers found their groove on the team’s second possession of the ball game. Winnipeg marched down the field and Nichols aired it out to Darvin Adams, who scored the home team’s opening touchdown to cap a seven-play, 71-yard drive. Justin Medlock was good on his convert kick after the 45-yard score and the Bombers cut the REDBLACKS lead to 8-7.

Maurice Leggett recovered a Harris fumble on the REDBLACKS’ next drive, after the Ottawa pivot called his own number on second-and-10, bringing the Bombers offence right back onto the field. Winnipeg couldn’t take advantage of the turnover, however, as the Ottawa defence stood tall and forced the Bombers to punt.

Davis scored his second touchdown of the contest early in the second quarter to extend the REDBLACKS lead. The one-yard score finished off a 12-play, 75-yard drive. Ottawa had a second attempt on a two-point convert – an offside call on the Bombers defence negated the first try – and Harris tossed to Diontae Spencer, who trotted into the end zone untouched to give Ottawa a 16-7 lead.

Lewis Ward kicked his first field goal of the contest, splitting the uprights from 41-yards out with about four minutes left in the first half. The three-point score gave the REDBLACKS a 19-7 lead as the Bombers headed back on the field looking to respond before heading to the locker room.

After a two-and-out for Winnipeg, Harris and the REDBLACKS kept the momentum rolling as time ticked off the clock late in the second quarter. They moved into field goal range – a drive that included a 26-yard catch from Ellingson – and Ward made his 38-yard attempt to add to Ottawa’s lead (22-7).

After the first half, Ottawa’s defence held the Bombers to four two-and-outs and off the score sheet completely in the second quarter. Harris and the REDBLACKS offence was also much more effective than Nichols and his Bombers in the first half – Ottawa’s pivot threw 241 yards in the first 30 minutes while Winnipeg’s had just 84.

Andrew Harris scored the Bombers second major of the contest midway through the third quarter. It was a direct snap to Winnipeg’s tailback who then dashed 13 yards and stretched out for the score to cap the eight-play, 54-yard drive. After Medlock’s completed convert, the Bombers cut Ottawa’s lead to 22-14.

The REDBLACKS responded to Winnipeg’s touchdown with one of their own. Dominique Rhymes scored his first CFL touchdown, after Harris tossed a 59-yard strike to Rhymes to get into scoring position. Ottawa’s two-point convert was repeated after a roughing the passer penalty was called on the Bombers defence and William Powell shoved his way into the end zone. The five-yard score put the REDBLACKS up 30-14 with under five minutes left in the third quarter.

Ottawa kept their foot on the gas, as Corey Tindal forced Nichols to fumble the ball on the first play of the Bombers very next drive. Avery Williams scooped it up and ran it to the house for the score. Powell scored his second two-point convert of the evening, darting into the end zone and the REDBLACKS silenced the Winnipeg faithful at Investors Group Field with a commanding 38-14 lead.

Adams scored his second touchdown of the game on the very first play from scrimmage to start the fourth quarter. The 72-yard score, coupled with Medlock’s point after, cut Ottawa’s lead to 38-21.

Powell added another major score for the visitors, a 28-yard run, with just over seven minutes left in the contest. Ward missed the point after and Ottawa held a 44-21 lead over Winnipeg.

That would be the final scoring play for either team as the REDBLACKS snapped Winnipeg’s three-game winning streak.

The Bombers head to Calgary to take on the Stampeders next week while Ottawa heads out on a Week 11 bye.

British Columbia Lions (3-4 SU, 5-2 ATS) at Toronto Argonauts (2-5 SU, 3-4 ATS)

Point-spread: BC -1 ½
Total: 51

Game Overview

BC remained in the thick of the playoff race in the West with last week’s upset and it is now a perfect 4-0 ATS in its last four games. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in three of those four games. This was the first time this season that the Lions put up more than 30 points behind an offense that is averaging 22.4 points per game. Travis Lulay led the second-half comeback and he finished the game with 239 yards passing and one touchdown throw.

Toronto is coming off a Week 9 bye after stunning Ottawa 42-41 on a last-second score the week before as a 6 ½-point home underdog. The total went OVER 48 points in that game and it has gone OVER in the Argonauts last three games. James Franklin has taken over the reins at quarterback and in six starts he has just two touchdown throws against six interceptions.

Betting Trends

-- BC has gone 6-1 both SU and ATS in its last seven road games against the Argonauts and the total has stayed UNDER in seven of the last eight meetings in Toronto.

Montreal Alouettes (1-7 SU, 3-5 ATS) at Edmonton Eskimos (5-3 SU, 3-5 ATS)
Point-spread: Edmonton -16 ½
Total: 52

Game Overview

Johnny Manziel is firmly in place as Montreal’s starting quarterback with mixed results. After a forgettable debut in a 50-11 loss to Hamilton, he showed a few glimpses of his athletic ability in last week’s loss to Ottawa. He ended that game with 168 yards passing while completing 16 of his 26 passing attempts. He also ran for 36 yards on three rushing attempts. The Alouettes remain the lowest scoring team in the CFL with an average of 15.0 PPG.

The Eskimos’ recent three-game winning streak came to a sudden end last Thursday night and they are 2-3 ATS in their last five games. The total ended as a PUSH on the 54-point line against BC after staying UNDER in three of their previous four games. Mike Reilly threw for 302 yards in that loss with two touchdown throws and two interceptions. He leads the CFL in touchdown passes this season with 16.

Betting Trends

-- Edmonton brings a SU five-game winning streak against Montreal into this inter-division clash with a 8-1 edge ATS in the last nine meetings. The total has gone OVER in eight of the last 11 matchups.

RIDERS STUN UNDEFEATED STAMPS AT MOSAIC

REGINA – The Saskatchewan Roughriders got points from their offence, defence and special teams to stun the Calgary Stampeders and end their undefeated start to the season with a 40-27 victory.

Despite four touchdown passes by Bo Levi Mitchell, the Stamps could not stop Zach Collaros or the Roughriders defence, who left the Calgary quarterback uncomfortable all game.

Saskatchewan jumped out to an early lead and never looked back.

Back to back catches by Jordan Williams-Lambert got the ball rolling early for the Riders who looked to score early against the league’s top team. Naaman Roosevelt’s 200th career reception put the Riders just outside the end zone and Brett Lauther booted a field goal for the quick 3-0 lead.

Tre Mason led the next Riders drive with a first down rush before Shaq Evans put the offence past midfield on a pair of grabs. Collaros found Caleb Holley to keep moving the chains and Lauther kicked another field goal to increase the lead to 6-0.

Going for it on 3rd-and-4 to close out the first quarter, Mitchell’s pass ended up in the hands of Nick Marshall who took the interception 65 yards back for the major as the Riders entered the second quarter leading 14-0 after a successful two-point conversion.

Responding on their next possession the Stamps offence used a series of short rushes and passes to move the ball downfield. It paid off with a Davaris Daniels touchdown, a wide open 45-yard reception to put Calgary on the board. Rene Paredes missed the point after attempt as the Stamps trailed 14-6.

All parts of the Riders were working to put up points as Sam Eguavoan blocked the Stamps punt attempt and took it back to the end zone as the Riders lead increased to 21-6.

Collaros connected with Evans deep that immediately put the Riders in field goal range as Lauther kicked another field goal.

The Stamps defence didn’t let up as the first half ticked away. Alex Singleton forced a Mason fumble and got the ball back in Mitchell’s hands at midfield with just under two minutes remaining.

Starting the second half with the ball, the Stamps aimed to turn the momentum around. Pinned in their own zone, Mitchell was sacked in the pocket by former teammate Charleston Hughes and fumbled the ball and it was recovered by Zach Hughes. Marshall, a defensive back, took the snap just outside the goal line and punched in the touchdown as the Riders were now up 31-6.

The next possession went much better for Mitchell, who found a groove and marched the Stamps offence downfield. Facing a 2nd-and-15, Mitchell hooked up with Kamar Jorden for a 32-yard touchdown grab. The two-point convert attempt was unsuccessful as Calgary still trailed 31-12.

A 26-yard catch by Marken Michel kept the momentum rolling as the Stamps put together another touchdown drive, this one capping on a 29-yard grab by Juwan Brescansin. Jorden hauled in the two-point convert as the Stamps still trailed at 31-20 at the end of the third frame.

Collaros and Williams-Lambert continued to work together to move the Riders offence downfield. A disqualification penalty against the Stamps put the Riders outside the red zone but they had to settle for another field goal to extend their lead, now 34-20.

The duo continued to be a thorn in the side of the Stamps defence, connecting for a 38-yard gain as the Riders looked to put the game away. Lauther booted another field goal, his fifth of the game, to put the Riders even further ahead.

With just over three minutes remaining in the game the Stamps were running out of time to mount a comeback. A 17-yard Daniels touchdown, his second of the game put the Stamps down by just 10. The Riders would add a late field goal to secure the 40-27 victory.

At halftime, Jim Hopson and John Terry were inducted into the Saskatchewan Plaza of Honour.

Next week the Riders travel to BC to take on the Lions while the Stampeders host the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

CFL Betting Recap - Week 10
August 21, 2018

By Joe Williams

League Betting Notes

-- Underdogs went 3-1 SU in Week 10
-- Underdogs went 4-0 ATS in Week 10
-- Home teams posted a 3-1 SU record in Week 10
-- Home/road teams posted a 2-2 ATS record in Week 10
-- The 'Over' went 3-1 in Week 10

Analysis

Ottawa (6-3) posted an impressive 44-21 road victory in Winnipeg (5-4), and they continue to carry the flag for the beleaguered East Division. They remain the only team in the East over .500, and they're six points clear of both Hamilton (3-5) and Toronto (3-5) with a game in hand. The RedBlacks will have a bye before hosting cellar-dwelling Montreal (1-8) in two weeks.

Speaking of the Blue Bombers, they slipped to 3-2 SU at home and they have failed to cover their past two in Manitoba after opening 3-0 ATS in the first three on their home turf. The 'over' continue to come in regularly for the Bombers, going 6-3 through nine outings. The 44 points allowed was easily a season high, as their previous worst came in a 33-30 loss in their opening game on June 14.

The Alouettes didn't win, but they were able to cover a big number in Edmonton (6-3). The Als are 0-3 SU since QB Johnny Manziel took the reins of the offense, but they were able to post a season-best 24 points and they have covered in consecutive games for the first time this season. The 'over' is also 3-1 across the past four for Montreal.

As far as the Esks are concerned, they might have picked up their sixth victory to creep up on Calgary (7-1), but Edmonton is still just 3-6 ATS overall and 2-3 ATS in five home outings. They will look to avenge a 38-21 loss at home agianst the Ti-Cats when they travel to the Hammer on Thursday to open Week 11 play.

The Stamps were surprised at Saskatchewan (4-4), suffering their first straight-up loss of the season. It was the first cover at home for the Roughriders since July 5, as they rebounded from a 34-22 in their first showing at home against the Stamps on July 28. The sides will face each other again in the cool crisp air of autumn on Oct. 20 in Southern Alberta.

Lastly, the BC Lions (3-5) continue to hold up the end in the West, and their non-cover in Toronto on Saturday in a 24-23 loss snapped a 4-0 ATS streak. Speaking of streaks, the 'under' has cashed in a season-high three straight for the Lions.

CFL Betting Notes - Week 11
David Schwab

Ottawa remained the only CFL team in the East Division to post a straight-up winning record this season with Friday’s 44-21 victory against Winnipeg as a 6 ½-point road underdog. Saturday’s doubleheader of games in Week 10 started with another upset when Toronto snuck past British Columbia 24-23 as a three-point underdog at home.

Later that night, Edmonton hammered Montreal 40-24, but the Eskimos could not cover a massive 19-point spread on the closing line as home favorites. Week 10 in the CFL came to a close on Sunday with Calgary’s stunning 40-27 loss to Saskatchewan as a 6 ½-point road favorite. That is why they play the games with the underdogs going 3-1 SU and a perfect 4-0 ATS in last week’s CFL action.

Thursday, Aug. 23

Edmonton Eskimos (6-3 SU, 3-6 ATS) at Hamilton Tiger-Cats (3-5 SU, 3-4-1 ATS)

Point-spread: Hamilton -1 ½
Total: 57

Game Overview

The Eskimos moved into sole possession of second place in the West Division with Saturday night’s SU win, but they have failed to cover in four of their last six games. The total went well OVER the 50 ½-point closing line in that game after staying UNDER or ending as a PUSH in four of their previous five contests. Mike Reilly continues to throw the ball all over the field with 424 yards passing in Week 10 to raise his league-high total passing yards to 3,046 in nine games.

Hamilton went into last week’s bye with just one SU win in its last five games while going 1-3-1 ATS during this same slide. The total has stayed UNDER in five of its first eight games. One of the Tiger-Cats three victories this season (SU and ATS) was a 38-21 upset over Edmonton in Week 2 as 6 ½-point underdogs on the road. Jeremiah Masoli completed 19-of-29 passing attempts for 332 yards and three touchdowns in that first meeting.

Betting Trends

-- Edmonton has won four of the last five meetings SU, but the Tiger-Cats have a 4-1-1 edge ATS in the last six meetings in this inter-division clash. The total has stayed UNDER in five of the last six matchups played in Hamilton.

Friday, Aug. 24

Toronto Argonauts (3-5 SU, 4-4 ATS) at Montreal Alouettes (1-8 SU, 4-5 ATS)

Point-spread: Toronto -6
Total: 50 ½

Game Overview

The defending Grey Cup Champs may have saved their season with last week’s upset after getting past Ottawa 42-41 in dramatic fashion on Aug. 2 to snap a SU three-game skid. The Argonauts have covered ATS in four of their last six games and the total has gone OVER in three of their last four contests. McLeod Bethel-Thompson once again got the start at quarterback against BC and he completed 18-of-29 passing attempts for 260 yards and a score.

Montreal had to turn to Antonio Pipkin as the starter against Edmonton in light of its depleted ranks at quarterback. He completed 56 percent of his 25 passing attempts for 217 yards. He threw one touchdown pass against one interception. Johnny Manziel’s playing status for this Friday’s game remains day-to-day with him in concussion protocol. The Alouettes have been the lowest scoring team in the CFL this season with an average of 16 points per game.

Betting Trends

-- Toronto has a slight 3-2 edge both SU and ATS in the last five meetings after winning the last two matchups in the East Division rivalry in 2017. The total has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in eight of the last 10 games between the two.

Saturday, Aug. 25

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (5-4 SU, 5-3-1 ATS) at Calgary Stampeders (7-1 SU, 5-3 ATS)

Point-spread: Calgary -8 ½
Total: 53 ½

Game Overview

The Blue Bombers recent three-game SU winning streak came to an end with Friday’s loss to Ottawa. The total went well OVER the closing 54 ½-point line in that game and it has gone OVER in six of their first nine games this season. One of the reasons for the results on the total line is an offense that is averaging 32.1 PPG as the highest scoring team in the league. The 44 points allowed in Week 10 was the first time Winnipeg gave up more than 23 points in any of their last six games.

Calgary’s slow start out of the gate on Sunday led to a 24-6 deficit at the half that it could never close. Stampeders’ quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell still threw four touchdown passes in that game, but their defense looked uncharacteristically soft after holding opposing teams to fewer than 22 points in each of their first seven games. Calgary has now failed to cover in three of its last four games with the total going OVER in two of its last three contests.

Betting Trends

-- Calgary has beaten Winnipeg SU in 14 of the last 16 meetings on its home field. However, it has failed to cover in four of its last five home games against the Blue Bombers. The total has gone OVER in four of the last six meetings overall.

Saskatchewan Roughriders (4-4 SU, 4-4 ATS) at British Columbia Lions (3-5 SU, 5-3 ATS)
Point-spread: BC -2 ½
Total: 52

Game Overview

Kudos to Saskatchewan for executing the perfect game plan in Sunday’s stunning upset. It went on to outplay its West Division rivals in every phase of the game. Zach Collaros looked sharp throwing the ball with a 73.5 completion percentage on 34 passing attempts. He ended the game with 270 total passing yards and the Roughriders added another 112 yards running the ball. However, most of the credit for Sunday’s victory goes to the team’s play on the other side of the ball.

The Lions had been able to cover in their four previous games as part of a SU 2-2 record. Saturday’s loss to Toronto stayed UNDER the 50 ½-point closing line and it has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in four of BC’s last five games. Travis Lulay completed 21 of his 34 passing attempts against Toronto for 285 yards and one touchdown pass, while Jeremiah Johnson carried the ball 11 times for 60 yards and another score.

Betting Trends

-- The home team has won the last three meetings SU, but Saskatchewan has covered ATS in eight of the last 10 games in this West Division tilt. The total has stayed UNDER in three of the last four meetings.

TICATS CLAW BACK TO DEFEAT ESKIMOS AT HOME

HAMILTON — The Hamilton Tiger-Cats take claim of the season series against the Edmonton Eskimos after a come from behind win, clinched by a field goal as time expired to seal the 25-24 win.

Despite falling to a 24-10 deficit by halftime, the Tiger-Cats defence held the Eskimos scoreless in the second half, allowing Jeremiah Masoli and the offence to claw back and take the win at home.

The Hamilton quarterback finished off the night with 419 yards and completing 27 of his 44 pass attempts. Although he threw two interceptions in the first half, his lone touchdown for the night came in a crucial time late in the fourth quarter as the Tabbies pushed for the victory.

Hamilton, coming off of a bye week, was hoping to run into a tired Eskimos team who faced a shortened week of practice ahead of their Thursday meeting, however, Edmonton had other plans after a slow start in the first quarter.

However, that wouldn’t matter after the Eskimos went two-and-out, opening the way for the Ticats to then march down the field on a drive that started on their own 27-yard line. Nine plays later, Alex Green found paydirt from 10 yards out to put the Tabbies on the board, opening the game’s scoring. Green finished the night with over 100 yards rushing on 19 carries.

Hamilton’s defence continued to limit the damage of the Eskimos offence, forcing another two-and-out following the touchdown.

Since the interception, Masoli completed five of six passes for 100 yards before throwing an incompletion to Chris Williams in the end zone, bringing an end to their drive and having to settle for a 25-yard field goal from Lirim Hajrullahu.

The Tiger-Cats doubled up on the Green and Gold in time of possession, coming two seconds short of ten total minutes spent on offence.

Edmonton continued to struggle moving the ball against the Tiger-Cats defence and would only be able to notch a 52-yard field goal thanks to Sean Whyte.

On the ensuing offensive drive for Hamilton, Eskimos’ linebacker Chris Edward stripped Brandon Banks of the ball, which Josh Woodman pounced on.

Two plays later, Mike Reilly connected with Derel Walker for a 37-yard touchdown pass to draw the Esks even with Hamilton at 10-10 with just over five minutes remaining in the first half.

Shortly thereafter, the Eskimos found themselves back on offence. On second down, Reilly connected with the league’s leading receiver Duke Williams for a 95-yard bomb to pull ahead of the Ticats late in the second quarter.

Edmonton kept their foot on the gas, even in the final seconds of the half. Vidal Hazelton drew a pass interference call, which set up a 17-yard pass to Walker for his second touchdown of the game. The penalty was one of two defensive penalties against the Ticats in the first half which combined for 57 yards.

The scoring drive covered 74 yards in just four plays.

At halftime, the two teams headed to the locker rooms with the Eskimos ahead on the scoreboard 24-10.

Reilly overcame a slow start to throw just shy of 200 yards by halftime and three touchdowns, while his counterpart threw two interceptions and 157 yards. Both quarterbacks, despite the contrast in their ratio, had very similar completion percentages, hovering around 71 per cent.

The second half started off in a similar way as the first – with a turnover.

This time though, it would be Edmonton coughing the ball up on a fumble, setting the Ticats offence on the Eskimos’ 26-yard line, resulting in a 31-yard field goal three plays later.

The rest of the third was a seesaw as either team’s defences refused to budge, as there would be five punts through the remainder of the quarter.

Masoli and the Ticats’ offence faced a tough time in their attempt to claw back in the fourth quarter. An 84-yard completion to Mike Jones fell short after Masoli was unable to connect with a receiver on either of the two following plays, having to settle for three points with Hajrullahu’s third field goal of the night, narrowing Edmonton’s lead to 24-16.

The Ticats got hummin’ to keep those in attendance on the edge of their seat till the end on the ensuing offensive drive for Hamilton, connecting with Luke Tasker for a 51-yard touchdown to bring the Ticats within two with 2:37 remaining in the final quarter. The veteran receiver hauled in nine receptions for 156 yards for the night.

A quick two-and-out by the Eskimos gave the Ticats the ball with just over a minute remaining in the game for Jeremiah Masoli to work with, and that he did.

A completion to Terrence Toliver and a large gain by Alex Green on the ground put the Tabbies in perfect field position for Hajrullahu to kick the game-winning field goal to push the Black and Gold ahead, giving them the win and improve to 4-5 on the year.

The two teams will get an extended break as they get set for their Labour Day Classic matches next week on the holiday Monday. The storied rivalry between the Eskimos and Stampeders will lead off the evening at 3:00 p.m. ET, followed by the Ticats and Argonauts from Tim Hortons Field at 6:30 p.m. ET.

8. Jim Reynolds 14-6

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random stuff with the weekend here……

13) Next weekend, after the last preseason games, NFL teams will cut their rosters from 90 guys to 53; thats 1,184 players who will be out of a job. Lot of them will move to other teams and make other guys unemployed; couple hundred will get signed to practice squads, but it is high drama and it is why the last episode of Hard Knocks (Sept 4) will be excellent TV.

12) 2019 baseball schedule notes:
In addition to the A’s-Mariners series in Japan next March, Monterrey, Mexico will host a couple of two-game series; Reds-Cardinals in April, Angels-Astros in May.

AL East rivals New York-Boston are playing a two-game series in London in late June.

Royals-Tigers will play a game in Omaha, two days before the College World Series starts.

Pirates-Cubs are playing in the Little League Classic, in Williamsport.

11) The NL Wild Card race is so tightly bunched; someone came up with a scenario where eight teams in the NL would all wind up with the same record. How would those ties be broken?

Here’s the thing: right now, the current tie-breaking procedures don’t go any further than a four-way Wild Card tie. What if five teams tie? Its not likely, but it could happen.

From MLB.com:
“If MLB found itself in a situation not covered by the existing rules, it would be up to the Commissioner’s Office — likely with input from the Competition Committee — to determine the best course of action.”

10) Tampa Bay Rays swept a 3-game series in Kansas City May 14-16; of the 25 Rays who were in that series, only ten of them are still with Tampa Bay, and they’re somehow 66-61. Tremendous amount of turnover during the season for a major league team.

9) Browns 5, Eagles 0— Third week of exhibition games are supposed to be dress rehearsals for the regular season opener; this game was very, very ugly. Both teams have reason to worry about their offense.

Back in 1970, an NFL playoff game also ended 5-0; Dallas beat Detroit. I was 10 at the time, so not sure if that game was as bad as this one, but it was a more important one.

8) MGM is opening a new hotel/casino in Springfield, MA this weekend; they’ve been sending me lot of info, both online and in mail- I live 90 miles from Springfield. Aggressive marketing.

7) Bill Parcells turned 77 years old this week; as a player, he was a tackle drafted in the 7th round of the 1964 draft by the Detroit Lions.

The pick before Parcells? Cowboys drafted WR Bob Hayes, who was a very fast man- he played 11 years in the NFL and averaged 20 yards per catch.

6) Madison Bumgarner is also one of only five players in baseball to hit a home run off each of Jacob deGrom, Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke. Bumgarner, obviously, is the only pitcher to do that.

Other four: Giancarlo Stanton, Carlos González, Hunter Pence and Gregory Polanco

5) Royals’ 2B Whit Merrifield is the only player this season with three hitting streaks of 12+ games.

4) One thing I’ve learned from watching too much TV: everyone who rides one of those Peloton exercise bikes looks like a model or an Olympic athlete. Maybe I should get one; my current bike hasn’t improved my looks any (its a joke!!!)

Peloton must have an unlimited advertising budget; commercials are on all the time.

3) From Covers, the best “over” umpires in the majors:
1. Chris Guccione 16-4
2. David Rackley 14-5
3. Adrian Johnson 16-6
4. Brian Knight 15-6
5. Roberto Ortiz 7-3
t6. Ted Barrett 16-7
t6. Jim Wolf 16-7
8. Kerwin Danley 15-7

2) Urban Meyer gets suspended for the first three games of the season, for not firing one of his assistant coaches, who should’ve been fired. Buckeyes’ first three games are against Oregon State, Rutgers and TCU- that TCU game will be very interesting.

If you care about such things, Ohio State was -12 over TCU before Meyer’s suspension; they are now -10.

1) Interim coach at Ohio State is Ryan Day, who was once a college QB at New Hampshire, where the offensive coordinator was a guy named Chip Kelly. There are rumors that Day passed on the chance to be the Tennessee Titans’ OC this season, in order to stay at Ohio State. Interesting decision.
