Thursday's Elite Eight
January 26, 2017

A look at the day's top eight college basketball matchups, ranked in order of most attractive.

THURSDAY, JAN. 26

Matchup Records Skinny Projection

Oregon
Overall: 18-2 SU, 11-8 ATS
Pac-12: 7-0 SU, 7-0 ATS
Totals: 8-11 O/U

Utah
Overall: 14-5 SU, 10-6-1 ATS
Pac-12: 5-2 SU, 6-0-1 ATS
Totals: 9-7-1 O/U

Oregon at Utah, 10:30 p.m. ET, FS1

If Utah wins this game, don’t call it an upset. Even though Oregon is ranked in the Top 10 and hasn’t lost since Nov. 21, the Ducks come in as the underdog. This would be similar to Kansas losing at West Virginia, which was termed an “upset” by many but actually wasn’t since the Mountaineers were 3.5-point favorites. What this would be for the Utes is a statement win for a resume short on them. Thus far, they’ve fallen against Butler, Xavier, Arizona and most recently, UCLA, 83-82, last time they took the floor in Salt Lake City. Utah rallied from that setback by posting lopsided wins on the road at the Washington schools and is now back hoping to close strong so they’re not left behind on Selection Sunday. The Ducks opened the season 2-1 without standout guard Dillon Brooks, lost their first game without him and haven’t dropped a game since. He’s had to win a few by himself with late heroics, but is now in danger of missing his second consecutive game due to a sprained right foot. Oregon is among the deepest teams in the country and could still win without him, but the same can’t be said about host Utah without Utah State transfer David Collette, a 6-foot-9 forward who is shooting nearly 64 percent from the field. Collette is battling through concussion protocol, but forms a great frontcourt combo with versatile leading scorer and rebounder Kyle Kuzma (15.3 ppg, 10 rpg). The Utes have gone 7-2 when he’s out there and have been fortified by Collette and SMU transfer Sedrick Barefield, really taking off since they became eligible. Head coach Larry Krystkowiak has been coy about whether Collette will play, but Brooks is likely to participate. Utah is 59-6 at home over its last four seasons, but two of those losses have come at the hands of the Ducks, who have won 10 of the last 11 in the series.

Oregon 81
Utah 76

Xavier
Overall: 14-5 SU, 10-8 ATS
Big East: 4-3 SU, 4-3 ATS
Totals: 9-9 O/U

Cincinnati
Overall: 17-2 SU, 8-7-1 ATS
American: 7-0 SU, 3-3-1 ATS
Totals: 7-8-1 O/U

Xavier at Cincinnati, 7 p.m. ET, ESPN2

This is only the third Crosstown Shootout where both teams are nationally-ranked, but this would be an emotionally-charged affair even if both were 10 games under .500. One of the nation’s top rivalries is renewed with Cincinnati looking to avoid four consecutive losses against Xavier for the first time ever. It has dropped seven of nine in the series. The Bearcats come in perfect in American Athletic Conference play and haven’t lost since a 75-65 to Butler on Dec. 10. They’ve won 15 of 16, but are just 1-2 against ranked teams. This is a proving ground for Mick Cronin’s team and star point guard Troy Caupain, who has had a great career for the Bearcats that would be marred by not beating the Musketeers. He’ll square off with XU standout Edmond Sumner, a bigger point guard who has bothered him in past meetings. Cincinnati has only reached 60 points once in the last five meetings against Xavier, but has its deepest, most well-rounded offensive team in years. Chris Mack’s squad is led by Sumner and top scorer Trevon Bluiett, both future pros. Free-throw shooting has typically been a factor in this rivalry. Although the Musketeers have three of the top four shooters by percentage, their lead this season is only .695 to .664. Xavier has been an underdog three times this season, losing each time, straight up and ATS.

Cincinnati 72

Virginia Tech
Overall: 15-4 SU, 8-7 ATS
ACC: 4-3 SU, 3-4 ATS
Totals: 8-6-1 O/U

North Carolina
Overall: 18-3 SU, 10-9 ATS
ACC: 6-1 SU, 3-3-1 ATS
Totals: 9-11 O/U

Virginia Tech at North Carolina, 8 p.m. ET, ESPN

The Tar Heels will look to avoid the same fate that befell the two teams it came into the week tied with atop the ACC since Florida State and Notre Dame caught sound beatdowns. With rival Duke slumping mightily, this is an opportunity to build a lead in the nation’s toughest conference. Virginia Tech will try to generate mismatches with its versatility but comes in extremely vulnerable against UNC’s size. With versatile forwards Zach LeDay and Chris Clarke able to step out and take bigs like Kennedy Meeks, Isaiah Hicks and Tony Bradley away from their comfort zone, the Hokies are going to have to execute while overcoming the length and strength that has allowed North Carolina to lead the country in offensive rebounding. The Heels haven’t lost in 2017, the lone ACC team that can say that, averaging 93.3 points in the process. Their scoring average of 89.4 tops the conference and ranks fourth in the country. Five of their last six games have gone over the posted total. Virginia Tech comes off an 82-81 win at Clemson to snap a two-game road losing streak in lead play. The Hokies have surrendered an average of 92.7 points in league contests outside Blacksburg, so it remains to be seen whether they have a prayer of slowing down Carolina, though Buzz Williams has managed to hold it to just 71.5 points through his first two games since taking over at Virginia Tech. Unfortunately, his teams have averaged 61.5 in suffering a pair of losses. The Hokies haven’t beaten North Carolina since 2009, haven’t won in Chapel Hill since ’06 and lost last year’s game at home despite holding the visitors to 3-for-23 3-point shooting.

North Carolina 94

Indiana
Overall: 14-6 SU, 9-8 ATS
Big Ten: 4-3 SU, 3-4 ATS
Totals: 9-8-1 O/U

Michigan
Overall: 13-7 SU, 6-11 ATS
Big Ten: 3-4 SU, 2-5 ATS
Totals: 12-5 O/U

Indiana at Michigan, 9 p.m. ET, ESPN2

The Wolverines and Hoosiers have each hit rough spots in league play, but both have enough juice to easily reach their postseason goals so long as they get rolling. Each team has been playing well. Michigan has won two of three, losing only at Wisconsin. Indiana has captured three straight, coming off a huge win over Michigan State on the strength of James Blackmon’s career-high 33 points. The Hoosiers have survived losing explosive wing OG Anunoby for the season to a knee injury and are currently playing without sophomore Juwan Morgan, who has missed back-to-back games with a foot ailment and is uncertain to play here. Michigan is looking to get back on the right side of .500 and has seen its offense slowed in league play as it has struggled with defense. 6-foot-10 forward DJ Wilson emerged as a huge force in Saturday’s win against the Illini with 19 points, seven boards and five assists and will have to contend with Hoosiers standout big man Thomas Bryant. Both teams have extremely tough schedules ahead, so this is a massive game since each will be on the road this weekend with the Wolverines at Michigan State and IU visiting Northwestern. Indiana went on a 25-0 run in last year’s visit to Crisler Arena, walking out of Ann Arbor with a win.

Michigan 75

Nebraska
Overall: 16-2 SU, 9-8 ATS
Big Ten: 3-4 SU, 4-3 ATS
Totals: 7-10-1 O/U

Northwestern
Overall: 16-4 SU, 12-4-1 ATS
Big Ten: 5-2 SU, 5-2 ATS
Totals: 7-10 O/U

Nebraska at Northwestern, 8 p.m. ET, BTN

Since Nebraska opened Big Ten play with impressive wins at Indiana and Maryland and also held up well on the road at Clemson, this could prove to be a very valuable game for Northwestern at home as it looks to continue stacking up its tournament resume. Even though the ‘Huskers have dropped four straight, a run that began in Lincoln on Jan. 8 with a 74-66 loss to these Wildcats, they’ve been in every game, dropping the last two by a single point against Ohio State and Rutgers. Northwestern comes off a two-point win over the Buckeyes and has won four straight, a streak punctuated by its first win in Columbus since 1977. For a team looking to finally reach the NCAAs for the first time, every little bit helps, but this feels like a huge must-win home game on the heels of such a landmark win. A 6-2 start in league play would continue to build on their momentum, while the alternative of splitting with Nebraska to fall to 5-3 would certainly serve as a buzzkill. The Wildcats beat Ohio State despite shooting just 37.5 percent, so they’ll try to get back on track against a team they shot 51 percent against, hitting 11-of-24 3-point shots. Vic Law hit five of his six attempts as NU rode the long ball to rally from a second-half deficit. Law and Scottie Lindsey, who leads the Wildcats in scoring and has taken his game to another level, should be the keys here. Northwestern has covered in four straight, and is already off to its best start in history and looking to win five straight Big Ten games for the first time since 1966. A 6-2 start would be the school’s best since 1944. The Huskers will be playing their fourth game since losing top rebounder and shot-blocker Ed Morrow to a foot injury and wouldn’t be on such a lengthy skid if he were in the lineup.

Louisiana Tech
Overall: 14-6 SU, 8-3 ATS
C-USA: 6-1 SU, 6-1 ATS
Totals: 4-6-1 O/U

UAB
Overall: 12-8 SU, 5-10 ATS
C-USA: 5-2 SU, 3-4 ATS
Totals: 7-8 O/U

Louisiana Tech at UAB, 9 p.m. ET, ASN

The Bulldogs are one game up on UAB and trail only unbeaten Middle Tennessee as they visit Birmingham. While Conference USA will probably end up being a one-bid league, these next 72 hours offer an opportunity for La Tech to open some eyes since it calls for road games against the Blazers and Blue Raiders. Over its last 11 games, it has won nine and dropped just two one-point affairs, covering in six of seven. Forward Erik McCree (17.2 ppg, 8.8 rpg) is among the top forwards in the league and will be going up against William Lee, the reigning C-USA Defensive Player of the Year who averages 2.6 blocks per game. Blazers top scorer Chris Cokley (12.4) and big senior Tosin Mehenti will also be around to contend with McCree, Joniah White and Miami transfer Omar Sherman, so both frontcourts will be heavily involved in this outcome. UAB’s second-leading scorer and rebounder Hakeem Baxter (12.4, 5.8) suffered a hyper-extended left knee and is considered day-to-day for this game. The Blazers already lost point guard Nick Norton to a knee injury in the season-opener, so they’re already lacking the depth at guard they were counting on. That sets up well for Louisiana Tech, who has to hope its young backcourt of DaQuan Bracey and Derric Jean continues to hold up well on the road in 2017, where it has gone a perfect 3-0 with wins at Southern Miss, Charlotte and Old Dominion.

BYU
Overall: 15-6 SU, 9-9 ATS
West Coast: 6-2 SU, 4-4 ATS
Totals: 7-10-1 O/U

Santa Clara
Overall:11-10 SU, 8-11 ATS
West Coast: 5-3 SU, 3-5 ATS
Totals: 6-12-1 O/U

BYU at Santa Clara, 11 p.m. ET, ESPNU

Because Gonzaga and Saint Mary’s are floating out there as massive potential conquests, there’s hope for these two to suddenly get hot and steadily climb into NCAA Tournament at-large contention. Obviously, BYU is the most serious candidate between the two, but the Broncos have won three of four and are feeling good about themselves as they attempt to avenge an 89-59 loss suffered in Provo on Dec. 29. Although Santa Clara was routed by the Zags 88-57 last Thursday, it bounced back against Loyola Marymount on Jared Brownridge’s second buzzer-beater in a four-game span. The Cougars held him to just eight points in a wire-to-wire win that they led by as much as 35. BYU has won 17 straight in this series, including all 13 meetings against the Broncos since joining the West Coast Conference. Eric Mika (20.4 ppg, 9.7 rpg) was just about at his averages in the first meeting, going for 19 and 9, and the Cougars went 9-for-14 from 3-point range to pile on. Santa Clara shot 7-for-31, so getting off to a strong start at home is going to be vital. The 'under' has prevailed in five of seven Santa Clara games and the total ended up a 'push' (148) in the first meeting. Guard Nick Emery (knee) was upgraded to 'probable.'

San Diego
Overall: 10-10 SU, 11-5 ATS
West Coast: 3-5 SU, 6-2 ATS
Totals: 11-5 O/U

Gonzaga
Overall: 20-0 SU, 13-4 ATS
West Coast: 8-0 SU, 6-2 ATS
Totals: 9-8 O/U

San Diego at Gonzaga, 9 p.m. ET, ROOT

Given what we’ve seen this week, this game that opened with a 27-point spread beat out a couple of Pac-12 offerings for No. 8 because, well, we’ve seen lot of crazy this week. This is also likely to be the biggest obstacle between the Bulldogs and a No. 1 ranking since the WCC’s last-place team, Pepperdine, is next in town on Saturday. The Zags are already No. 1 in the VI Top 25 despite failing to cover in each of their last two wins over Portland, laying 32.5 in Spokane. The Toreros have actually been solid against the number, covering eight of their last nine as an underdog. Second-year head coach Lamont Smith has already seen USD surpass last season’s win total, but his team was routed 60-43 at home by San Francisco on Saturday. Wing Olin Carter III, the team’s most prolific shooter and forward Juwan Gray both missed that game due to the flu and are scheduled to be back to join leading scorer Brett Bailey, a Spokane native, make a run at the much larger Zags. The size differential will make an upset practically impossible, but Gonzaga head coach Mark Few does have concerns with point guard Nigel Williams-Goss still not 100 percent due to a hip issue and backup forward Killian Tillie dealing with a sprained ankle. Williams-Goss leads Gonzaga in scoring (14.5), rebounds (5.6) assists (4.7) and steals (1.7). Few is 38-4 in his career against San Diego, winning 37 of 40. Gonzaga last lost in this series in 2014, but has won 17 in a row at home, last losing in 2000. The Toreros have never won in the new Kennel.

Armadillo: Friday's six-pack

— Ravens’ kicker Justin Tucker made a 75-yard FG at practice for the Pro Bowl.

— North Carolina 91, Virginia Tech 72— Tar Heels had 16 offensive rebounds……in the first half.

— Oklahoma City big guy Enes Kanter broke his arm Thursday when he punched a chair. No bueno.

— West Virginia’s senior forward Nathan Adrian is the first high school player from Morgantown to get a basketball scholarship from the Mountaineers since the late 50’s.

— Packers told offensive assistant Tom Clements to take a hike; they let his contract expire, a nice way of saying he is fired.

— Felix Hernandez had $1.5M in jewelry stolen from his home in Seattle in November; the thieves were recently captured and most of the loot recovered.

**********

Armadillo: Friday's List of 13: Random thoughts with weekend here……

13) January 14, 1974 was the first Super Bowl played in Houston, at Rice Stadium; the Dolphins beat Minnesota 24-7. For the entire game, Miami QB Bob Griese was 6-7 passing for 93 yards. FOR THE WHOLE GAME. Seven passes, plus he was sacked once.

Football has changed tremendously in the last 40 years.

12) From 1975-80, Duke and Clemson both had basketball coaches named Bill Foster, which is a little odd, since they’re conference rivals in the ACC.

Duke’s Bill Foster had the Blue Devils in the 1978 Final Four but left a couple years later, upset over some little things, one of which was the school’s refusal to pave the coaches’ parking lot.

So Mike Krzyzewski became Duke’s coach in part because the school wouldn’t pave a parking lot. Life is funny sometimes.

11) Ice Cube is starting a 3-on-3 half-court, summer basketball league for retired NBA players called Big3, which starts this June. The league will eight teams of five players each and the league will apparently tour the country together, with each team playing once in each city.

10) Three assistant football coaches at Michigan are now making over $1M a year; thats not counting head coach Jim Harbaugh. I get it that coordinators make $1M+, but the third guy?

9) Eldrick Woods started this week ranked #663 in the World Golf Rankings.

8) When Lebron James says “….we need a bleeping playmaker” he means someone who makes his teammates better by passing the ball. He wasn’t referring to Carmelo Anthony.

7) Louisville lost another point guard with Tony Hicks going down for 4-6 weeks with a broken hand. I doubt Pitt has much sympathy for them, after the 51-point drubbing Louisville put on the Panthers earlier this week.

6) Monday night, someone at The D Casino in Las Vegas bet a $5 parlay on the money line on these NBA teams: Miami Heat +$650, Knicks +$195, Clippers +$270, Sacramento +$240, Milwaukee +$195. When those five underdogs all won SU, that $5 ticket turned into $3,800.

5) 30 years ago, a 30-second commercial on the Super Bowl telecast cost $550,000. This year, that same commercial would cost $5,000,000. Thats million, with an M.

4) There will be at least one fewer bowl game next year; the Poinsettia Bowl is no longer, as San Diego will have only only one bowl, the Holiday Bowl next season. The Poinsettia Bowl existed for 12 years.

3) NBA teams will have corporate advertising on their uniforms next year; Celtics will have a GE patch on their uniforms. They’re supposedly making $7M from GE on the deal.

2) Late one night at the Australian Open earlier this week, Brad Gilbert interviewed Giants’ punter Brad Wing, who is from Australia and was at the tournament.

1— Haven’t made my summer travel plans yet, but would be fun to be in Las Vegas during the British Open. Couple years ago, I was sitting at a bar late one night in Vegas, watching the end of an extra inning baseball game in Arizona, while at the same time watching early morning golf from across the pond. Thursday night baseball, Friday morning golf. Not bad.

Saturday’s games

Texas A&M is just 11-8 but only team that beat them by more than 11 was Kentucky (100-58). West Virginia lost two of last three games but hammered Kansas by 16 Tuesday in their last game; Mountaineers force turnovers 30.6% of time, #1 in country, but part of that was they’ve played #346 non-conference schedule (23.9% in Big X games), so they’ve bullied lesser teams. Texas A&M won its last two games by total of five points; they’re 1-6 vs top 50 teams, with best win over #49 Va Tech. Aggies start a freshman and three sophomores.

Home side won five of six Notre Dame-Georgia Tech ACC games; Irish lost two of three visits here, last two of which were decided by total of four points. All six games were decided by 8 or less points or in OT. Notre Dame lost two of last three games; they’re 3-1 on ACC road, with wins at Pitt/Miami/Va Tech. Yellow Jackets are 4-4 in ACC despite being picked last by most everyone; they’re 3-1 at home in ACC with only loss to Louisville- they beat Fla St/Clemson/UNC at home. ACC road favorites of 5 or less points are 3-2-1 vs spread.

Florida State was rolling until getting whacked by 22 at Ga Tech last game- they were down 41-15 at the half!!! Seminoles split last four games after a 16-1 start; they’re 1-2 on ACC road, with 60-58 win at Oakland, losses at UNC/Ga Tech. Syracuse won three of four ACC meetings with FSU, winning the two here by 13-13 points. Orangemen are making 78.5% on foul line, #1 in ACC play; they’re 4-0 at home, 0-4 on road in ACC, with home wins by 15-11-23-5 points. ACC road favorites of 3 or less points are 3-1-1 against the spread.

Tulsa is 5-2 in AAC despite losing 7 of top 8 scorers from LY; Hurricane is 3-0 in AAC home games, winning by 2-10-7 points- they get to foul line a lot and make 77.5% once they get there. Central Florida lost its last two games by 5 points each; they’re 1-2 on AAC road, losing by 15 at UConn, winning at Tulane. Tulsa won its last three games with UCF, by 2-15-8 points; Knights are 0-6 in last six visits to Tulsa, losing by 2-18-9-20-5-15 points. AAC home teams are 6-2 vs spread this season in games with spread of 3 or less points.

Young Maryland team (#319 experience) won its last five games, with three of those on road; Terrapins are 10-1 this season in games decided by 8 or less points. They turn ball over 20.8% of time in Big 14 games, but are tied for first anyway. Minnesota lost its last four games after a 15-2 start, losing last three games by 6 or less points- they’re 3-5 in Big 14, with 3 of 8 games going OT. Minnesota/Maryland split first two Big 14 meetings; Gophers pulled upset win LY as a 10-point underdog. Big 14 home favorites of 5 or less points are 12-7 vs spread.

St Bonaventure won its last three games, allowing 56 pts/game, but against lower part of A-14; they’re 5-2 in league, 2-1 on road, losing by 17 at Richmond. Bonnies won five of last seven games with Rhode Island, beating Rams by hoop in Olean LY; teams split last four meetings here, all of which were decided by 6 or less points. URI lost three of last five games; Garrett missed last three games. Rams are 2-1 at home in ACC, beating UMass/St Joe’s; they’re making only 56.1% on foul line. A-14 home favorites of 7 or less points are 7-10 vs spread.

Duke lost three of last four games, allowing 83 pts/game in losing last two on road, at Florida St/Louisville; Blue Devils are 1-3 in true road games this season- they beat UNLV in Vegas, but game was off-campus and UNLV is terrible anyway. Duke won 12 of last 13 games with Wake Forest, winning last four by 8-43-16-8 points- they won three of last four visits here, with wins by 8-5-8 points. Deacons are 3-5 in ACC, 2-2 at home, losing by 5 to Clemson, 6 to Carolina. ACC road favorites of 5 or less points are 3-2-1 vs spread.

Nevada had miracle comeback at New Mexico two weeks ago; they were down 14 with 1:16 left and Lobos had ball, but Wolf Pack won in OT. Nevada was 15-32 on arc, Lobos 26-40 on line yet Wolf Pack won by only a point. Nevada is 3-1 at home in MW, winning by 25-3-7 points, losing to Fresno. New Mexico is best team in MW at getting to foul line; they’re won last four games, scoring 79.3 pts/game. Lobos are 3-1 on MW road, with only loss by 4 at Utah State. Mountain West home favorites of 6 or less points are 8-10 vs spread.

I know this isn’t a conference game, but Kentucky won its four SEC home games by average of 26 points- they’ve struggled some on road. Wildcats are #345 experience team that played #10 pace thus far- they’re 3-2 vs top 50 teams, are 17-3 vs schedule #25. Kansas had its 18-game win streak snapped Tuesday in West Va; Jayhawks will be without backup big man Bragg, who is suspended here. Kansas is shooting 41.8% on arc, #4 in country but only 63.2% on foul line (#332). Kansas starts two juniors, two seniors; they’re a much older team.

Alabama won 68-58 at Mississippi State January 3, in brickfest where teams combined to go 7-34 on arc; Crimson Tide won seven of last eight games with MSU- three of last four series games were decided by 4 or less points, with State winning 67-66 in Tuscaloosa LY. Bulldogs are much improved at 13-6; they’re 2-1 on SEC road, with wins at LSU/Arkansas, are 2-5 vs top 100 teams, with two best wins Arkansas/Texas A&M. Alabama won seven of last nine games, is 5-2 in SEC, with four wins by 10+. SEC home favorites of 6 or less points are 7-16 vs spread.

Cal-Irvine/Cal-Davis are tied in loss column atop Big West; Anteaters are 8-2 in last ten games vs Davis, sweeping Aggies by 1-21 points LY- they won 62-61 here. Irvine had won eight in row before bad home loss to Cal Poly Thursday; UCI is a very young team. especially with Nelson out hurt again. Davis won six of last seven games, with loss at Riverside by 6; Aggies are at home for first time in three weeks- they’re 2-0 at home in league, beating UCSB by 26, Cal Poly by 4. Big West road favorites are 2-3 against the spread this month.

Colorado finally got its first Pac-12 win (1-7) Thursday, beating Oregon St by 7 after losing its previous two games in OT; Buffaloes lost at home to the LA schools by 15-3 in their other home games in Pac-12. Colorado is #39 experience team but is #10 in league at protecting ball, #8 on arc- they’ve underachieved. Oregon is first in Pac-12 in 7 of 9 defensive metrics; they’ve won 17 games in row, are 7-0 in Pac-12, with road wins by 22-19-6 points. Ducks’ last loss was Nov 21 to Georgetown on a neutral floor. Pac-12 road favorites of 5+ points are 7-5 vs spread. Ducks won three of last four games with Colorado, but are 0-4 in Pac-12 visits to Boulder.

St Mary’s won 12 of last 13 games; they were tied at half with USF Thursday, still won by 20. Gaels play slowest tempo in country (Santa Clara is 10th-slowest); they’re an experienced team that is 12-2 in last 14 games with Santa Clara, winning six of last seven visits here. St Mary’s is 3-1 on WCC road, with wins by 12-11-41 points and loss at Gonzaga. Santa Clara is 4-1 at home in WCC with loss by 31 to Gonzaga; they’re 44-108 (40.7%) on arc in last four games. WCC road favorites of 9+ points are 6-2 vs spread this season.

Kansas at Kentucky
January 27, 2017

The fourth season of the SEC/Big 12 Challenge will take place Saturday. The Big 12 has dominated the first three years of the event, owning the series by margins of 7-3, 6-4 and 7-3 from 2013-2014 through last season.

The highlight of this year’s matchups will go down in Lexington, where Kentucky and its rabid fan base will welcome Bill Self’s Kansas squad to Rupp Arena. Kentucky and Kansas are the two winningest programs in college basketball history. UK has 2,222 wins, while KU has won 2,204 games.

Kentucky (17-3 straight up, 12-8 against the spread) will be looking to avenge a 90-84 overtime loss at Kansas last season. It was an unfathomable loss for UK’s betting backers, who were holding tickets for a 5.5-point underdog. The Wildcats had led 46-40 at halftime.

The departed Wayne Selden Jr. scored 33 points for the winners, who also had Frank Mason (13 points) and Devonte Graham (11) in double figures. Mason had eight rebounds, four assists and two steals, while Graham dished out five helpers compared to merely one turnover.

Tyler Ulis paced the ‘Cats with 26 points, eight assists and three steals. Isaiah Briscoe had 12 points, five assists and four rebounds.

Both schools will be in bounce-back mode after losing road games earlier this week. Kansas saw its 18-game winning streak snapped at West Virginia, while UK took its first SEC loss at Tennessee.

John Calipari’s team lost an 82-80 decision in Knoxville as a 10.5-point favorite. The 162 combined points fell ‘under’ the 167-point total. Robert Hubbs III was the catalyst for the Volunteers with 25 points and seven rebounds, while freshman forward Grant Williams stuffed the stat sheet with 13 points, six rebounds, four blocked shots, three steals and six assists without a turnover.

In the losing effort, Malik Monk matched Hubbs’s game-high honors with 25 points, but he made only 3-of-13 attempts from 3-point range and had more turnovers (five) than assists (four). Edrice ‘Bam’ Adebayo hit 7-of-8 from both the field and the free-throw line in a 21-point effort. De’Aaron Fox finished with 17 points, four assists and two steals, while Briscoe contributed 11 points, 14 rebounds and five assists.

UK has won 10 of its 11 home games while producing an 8-3 spread record. This will be UK’s first single-digit home favorite situation of the season. In fact, Cal’s ‘Cats have only been single-digit ‘chalk’ three times this year. They’ve 2-1 both SU and ATS in those contests, beating North Carolina (103-100; -1) and Michigan State (69-48; -8) on neutral courts.

Kentucky took its two other defeats at Louisville by a 73-70 score as a 1.5-point favorite and at home vs. UCLA (97-92; -11). UK is ranked No. 2 at KenPom.com, fourth in the Associated Press’s poll and fourth in the RPI Rankings. The ‘Cats are 4-3 against the RPI Top 50 and 9-3 versus the Top 100. Their best wins include neutral-court scalps of UNC and Michigan St., in addition to home victories over Arkansas and South Carolina.

Monk is averaging a team-high 21.8 points per game while hitting 49.8 percent of his shots from the field. The true freshman is a future lottery pick with a smooth jumper and explosive moves off the dribble. Monk is making 39.9 percent of his launches from 3-point land and 82.9 percent of his free-throw attempts.

Fox (16.2 PPG) has a 118/43 assists-to-turnovers ratio and a team-high 32 steals. Briscoe is a box-score bully, averaging 14.1 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.0 steals per game. Adebayo provides an interior presence, averaging 13.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. He has a team-best 34 blocked shots and is shooting at a 62.4 percent clip from the field.

Kentucky is second in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 92.2 PPG. The ‘Cats are 13th in the country in field-goal percentage (49.6%).

Kansas (18-2 SU, 6-12 ATS) has won four of its five road games, but has limped to a 1-4 spread record in those assignments. The road loss came Tuesday in Morgantown, where West Virginia ran KU out of the gym, 85-69, as a 3.5-point home ‘chalk.’ The 154 points dipped ‘under’ the 159.5-point total.

Josh Jackson had a team-best 22 points, four rebounds and four assists before fouling out. (He also had one of the sickest dunks of the season in traffic!) Graham and Mason were also in double figures with 17 and 15 points, respectively.

KU is No. 2 in the AP poll, No. 6 in the RPI and No. 9 at KenPom.com. The Jayhawks own a 5-1 record versus the RPI Top 50 and a 10-2 mark against the Top 100. They have home wins over Kansas State, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Stanford, Nebraska and UNC-Asheville. In addition, Self’s team has beaten Duke and Georgia on neutral courts while also capturing victories at TCU and at Iowa State.

KU’s only other loss came in the season opener to Indiana, which knocked off the Jayhawks 103-99 in overtime at the Armed Forces Classic in Honolulu. The Hoosiers won outright as six-point underdogs.

Mason is a legit candidate for National Player of the Year honors. The senior point guard is averaging team-highs in scoring (19.8 PPG), assists (5.2 APG), field-goal percentage (51.2%) and 3-point percentage (52.8%). Mason also has 26 steals.

Jackson is a true freshman who like Monk and Fox, is a future lottery pick. He relentlessly attacks the basket and has incredible athleticism. Jackson is averaging 15.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.3 blocked shots per game. Jackson’s weakness to date has been his work at the charity stripe, where he’s making only 55.8 percent of his FTs.

Graham (13.6 PPG) has a 94/31 assists-to-turnovers ratio, averages 1.6 SPG and drains 39.2 percent of his shots from downtown.

Kansas is ranked sixth in the nation in 3-point shooting percentage (41.8%), 10th in field-goal percentage (49.8%) and 16th in scoring offense (84.6 PPG).

KU has been an underdog twice this season, beating Duke 77-75 as a 2.5-point ‘dog at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Mason led the way with a team-best 21 points. The other ‘dog spot came in the aforementioned loss in Morgantown.

Kansas isn’t just dealing with the loss at WVU, but a pair of off-court developments have been making news in Lawrence. On Wednesday, news broke that the University of Kansas police are investigating the reported rape of a 16-year-old girl at McCarthy Hall, a dorm that houses the KU men’s basketball team and other male students.

According to a police report obtained by the Kansas City Star, the alleged rape and three additional crimes took place on Dec. 17 and 18 between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. The other crimes are furnishing alcohol to a minor, contributing to a child’s misconduct and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The police report lists five KU players as witnesses: Frank Mason III, Mitch Lightfoot, Lagerald Tick, Tucker Vang and Josh Jackson. Self told The Star, “From what I have learned, a witness can be many things, including a person who can potentially provide information, whether an eyewitness or not, or has been present before, during or after an alleged incident.

“All comments moving forward will come from the university or KU police department. If information is brought to us that warrants action at any time, the appropriate action will be taken.”

Then on Thursday night, Kansas announced that sophomore forward Carlton Bragg has been suspended indefinitely. Bragg is averaging 15 minutes per game, contributing 6.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. “This violation is not connected to the alleged incident in McCarthy Hall on Dec. 17,” Self said in a statement.

The ‘over’ is 13-7 overall for UK, 7-4 in its home games.

The ‘under’ is 10-8 overall for the Jayhawks, 4-1 in their road outings. They’ve seen the ‘under’ cash in five consecutive games.

These storied programs have faced each other nine times since 1998. UK has won outright in five of those nine meetings, but KU has a 5-4 spread record. The ‘Cats have won three of the last four encounters both SU and ATS. The ‘under’ is 6-3 in the last nine UK-KU showdowns.

Tip-off on ESPN is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- Other SEC/Big 12 Challenge matchups include Texas A&M at West Virginia (noon Eastern, ESPN) Florida at Oklahoma (2:00, ESPN), Kansas State at Tennessee (2:00, ESPN2), LSU at Texas Tech (2:00, ESPNU), Texas at Georgia (4:00, ESPN), Iowa St. at Vanderbilt (4:00, ESPN2), Arkansas at Oklahoma State (4:00, ESPNU), Baylor at Ole Miss (6:00, ESPN2) and Auburn at TCU (6:00, ESPNU).

-- Florida guard Canyon Barry sat out Wednesday’s blowout win at LSU after spraining his ankle at Monday’s practice. Barry is listed as ‘questionable’ at Oklahoma. The grad transfer from College of Charleston is the Gators’ second-leading scorer with a 12.4 PPG average.

-- This will be just the second time OU head coach Lon Kruger has faced Florida, the school he took to its first Final Four in 1994 behind the play of Craig Brown, Dan Cross and Andrew DeClercq. Kruger bolted UF to take the Illinois job after his 1995-96 team failed to make a third straight NCAA Tournament. Frustrated by playing second fiddle to the football program and the inability to sign the nation’s top player, Vince Carter from nearly by Daytona Mainland High School, who chose North Carolina over UF and FSU even though the Gators had just gone to the Final Four, Kruger welcomed the chance to go to Illinois, a basketball-first school. His exit was the best thing that ever happened to the UF hoops program. It led to one of the greatest hires in college basketball history when former AD Jeremy Foley plucked Billy ‘The Kid’ Donovan away from Marshall even though he was only 30 years old at the time. Of course, Donovan would lead the Gators to back-to-back national titles and 14 NCAA Tournaments during his dynastic 19-year tenure. On the way to the first of four trips to the Final Four in 2000, Florida and Illinois collided in the Round of 32 two days after Mike Miller’s buzzer beater allowed UF to slip past Butler. My Dad and I had great seats in the lower level at Lawrence-Joel Coliseum in Winston Salem that Sunday afternoon when Florida destroyed Kruger’s Illinois team 93-76 to advance to the Sweet 16. Teddy ‘Ballgames & Parlays’ Dupay and Udonis Haslem led the way for the Gators, who would literally go right through Tobacco Road on their way to their first national-title game, where they were beaten down by Michigan St.’s ‘Flintstones’ squad led by Mateen Cleaves. Prior to the loss to the Spartans, UF beat top-seeded Duke in the East Region semifinals at the Carrier Dome before blasting Doug Gottlieb’s Oklahoma State team. Then in the Final Four, UF beat up on UNC.

-- In case you were wondering (I was), all of the charges filed against Cleaves for an alleged sexual assault in October of 2015 were dismissed last year.

-- Taking a page out of his mentor Bobby Knight’s playbook, Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski has banned his players from the team’s locker room and from wearing school gear on campus. Coach K remains on indefinite leave from the team after undergoing back surgery earlier this month. He called a team meeting Tuesday night at his house one day after the Blue Devils lost at home to N.C. State. They play at Wake Forest on Saturday.

-- Is this finally the year for Northwestern? For those not in the know, the Wildcats have NEVER head their name called on Selection Sunday. That’s right, there have been zero trips to the NCAA Tournament that started in 1939 in the program’s history. However, after Thursday’s 73-61 win over Nebraska as an 8.5-home favorite, Chris Collins’s team is 17-4 overall, 13-5 ATS and 6-2 in Big Ten play for the first time since 1943-44. Northwestern has won five in a row both SU and ATS. The Wildcats’ four defeats have come to RPI Top-50 foes, including a 70-68 loss at Butler (#3 RPI) and a pair of 70-66 setbacks vs. Notre Dame (neutral court) and vs. Minnesota (#19 RPI). They don’t have the best RPI (#33), going 2-4 versus the Top 50 but 6-4 against the Top 100. They have a home win over Wake Forest, in addition to a neutral-court scalp of Dayton and road win at Penn State, at Nebraska and at Ohio State. Barring a big-time collapse, this is most likely the year in Evanston.

-- Oregon won for a school-record 17th consecutive time Thursday by winning 73-67 at Utah as a 1.5-point road favorite in Salt Lake City. After missing one game with a foot injury, guard Dillon Brooks returned to the lineup to score 19 points to help the Ducks join Arizona atop the Pac-12 standings with identical 8-0 conference records. They host Arizona in Eugene next Saturday (2/4).

-- After losing 86-80 at Harvard on Dec. 6, Northeastern didn’t taste defeat for more than five weeks. The Huskies won eight in a row and went 7-0 ATS in the process, hooking me up with winners galore. They even won at Breslin Center against Michigan St. However, following Thursday’s 51-49 loss to Elon as a 5.5-point home ‘chalk,’ Northeastern has dropped four in a row both SU and ATS. The losing streak began with a 74-67 loss at Towson on Jan. 14. The Huskies can avenge that defeat and get back on track when they host the Tigers on Saturday.

-- Two SEC coaches could be issued pink slips really soon: LSU’s Johnny Jones and Missouri’s Kim Anderson.

Villanova looks to bounce back vs. UVA
January 27, 2017

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Top-ranked Villanova suffered a surprising meltdown Monday night in a 74-72 loss at Marquette.

The Wildcats let a 13-point lead with six minutes remaining get away as the Golden Eagles closed the game on a 19-4 run for a stunning two-point victory.

Since Monday, Villanova (19-2, 7-2 Big East) has had time to regroup in preparation for a highly-anticipated matchup against nonconference foe and 12th-ranked Virginia (16-3, 6-2 ACC) Sunday at 1 p.m. ET at the Wells Fargo Center. The game has been announced as a sellout.

Mikal Bridges led the Wildcats with 20 points while Jalen Brunson scored 19 points and preseason Player of the Year candidate Josh Hart had 16 in the loss. Kris Jenkins scored just two points and missed all seven of his shots, including going 0 for 6 from beyond the arc.

Villanova shot 6 of 34 from 3-point territory.

"It was a great college basketball game that we came out on the wrong end of," Villanova coach Jay Wright told reporters. "Marquette deserves the credit. We've got to get back to learn from our mistakes and get back to work."

Hart was in foul trouble much of the first half before coming on late. For the Wildcats to be successful, they need to be aggressive getting to the basket.

"That just shows how much we settled and how we didn't get into the lane and make our teammates better," Hart told the Philadelphia Inquirer, referring to the 34 attempts from beyond the arc. "We've got to keep playing, no matter how much we're up. We had to have a killer mindset, we have to have heart for the full 40 minutes."

Virginia won its 16th game Tuesday night with an impressive 71-54 showing at No. 14 Notre Dame. The Cavaliers have won five in a row, which also includes road wins at Boston College and Clemson. They're 8-1 on the road this season.

Virginia defeated Villanova, 86-75, at home last season on its way to the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight for the first time since 1995.

The Wildcats lost to Seton Hall in the Big East tournament title game and responded to win six straight games in the NCAA Tournament for their second national championship in program history.

"It was obviously difficult to watch them play in the championship, but that's how it works," Virginia guard London Perrantes told the Virginia athletic sports website.

Perrantes had flu-like symptoms before the game against Notre Dame but wound up with 22 points. As a result, he moved into 44th place on the school's all-time scoring list with 1,027 career points.

Guard Marial Shayok scored at least 10 points in seven of the last eight games while guard Devon Hall achieved double figures in scoring for the seventh time in eight games.

Virginia's next test will be even more challenging against Villanova. It's the third of four home games at the home of the NBA's Philadelphia 76ers and NHL's Flyers. Villanova previously defeated Marquette and Providence in this arena.

"Every game is a big one for us, Virginia coach Tony Bennett told the Virginia athletic sports website. "Now we get a chance to go against a terrific team in a hostile environment. We'll have to show up and play."

Duke hoops players can't wear apparel
January 26, 2017

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is still officially away from the team as he recovers from back surgery, but he made it clear he is not pleased with his team's recent performance by laying down some penalties.

Krzyzewski held a meeting at his house Tuesday night, according to an ESPN report, and he told the players they were temporarily banned from their own locker room and forbidden from wearing any Duke apparel.

Apparently Krzyzewski has used this tactic in the past.

"He wasn't happy," a source told ESPN. "Especially after the loss to NC State."

It is unclear how long the penalties will be in effect.

The players held a players-only meeting after the meeting at Krzyzewski's house, according to the report.

Duke assistant coach Jeff Capel, who is acting as head coach in Krzyzewski's absence, was asked about the situation on WRAL-FM radio on Thursday.

"Really can't speak on it," Capel said, according to ESPN. "Disappointing when stuff that's supposed to stay in the locker room gets out."

The Blue Devils, who were ranked No. 1 in the preseason poll, have lost three of their past four games, and their loss to North Carolina State was their first home loss to the Wolfpack since 1995.

The Blue Devils are 15-5 overall and 3-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, putting them in a tie for ninth place. Duke is 2-3 in Krzyzewski's absence.

A number of key players have missed time with injuries, and guard Grayson Allen was suspended for one game for his latest tripping incident.

NC State-Louisville, Duke-Notre Dame headline week in ACC
January 27, 2017

A look at things to watch this week in the Atlantic Coast Conference:

GAME OF THE WEEKEND: North Carolina State at No. 13 Louisville. Star freshman point guard Dennis Smith Jr. led the Wolfpack (14-7, 3-5) to the program's first win at Duke's Cameron Indoor Stadium since 1995 on Monday night, turning in a dominant performance in one of college basketball's toughest environments. Can he perform similar magic on the road against the Cardinals and their rugged defense Sunday? Louisville (17-4, 5-3) has an injury-depleted backcourt, playing the past three games without Quentin Snider (hip) and losing guard Tony Hicks for several weeks with a broken bone in his right hand suffered Tuesday at Pittsburgh.

LOOKING AHEAD: No. 17 Duke is struggling as it heads to No. 14 Notre Dame on Monday night. The Blue Devils (15-5, 3-4) are coming off that home loss to N.C. State and visit Wake Forest on Saturday, with associate head coach Jeff Capel - still leading the team while Mike Krzyzewski recovers from back surgery - tinkering with rotations and lineups to find the right combinations. The Fighting Irish (17-4, 6-2) have lost two of three since a 5-0 ACC start and first must visit a better-than-expected Georgia Tech team on Saturday.

PLAYER TO WATCH: Wake Forest's John Collins is certainly proving to be an efficient threat, as long as he can avoid foul trouble. The 6-foot-10 sophomore ranks in the top 10 in the ACC in scoring (17.0), rebounding (9.0), blocks (1.6) and shooting percentage (60.2) through Tuesday's games. He has scored at least 21 points in three straight games, too, entering the Duke game.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
Winning on the road is never easy and it's once again tough to do in the ACC. Only three teams - North Carolina (3-1), Virginia (4-1) and Notre Dame (3-1) - enter the weekend with winning records in conference games on the road. The bottom 10 teams have combined for just six ACC road victories and none of them are better than 1-3. Last year, visiting teams won just 34.1 percent of their ACC road games and only two schools - North Carolina and Duke - finished above .500 in league play away from home.

ON THE WOMEN'S SIDE: Sue Semrau has No. 6 Florida State rolling again. The Seminoles (19-2, 7-1) entered Thursday night's game at Georgia Tech having won a league-best six straight with four of those victories coming against Top 25 teams. Florida State, the league's highest-ranked team, is the only ACC school that's perfect on the road.

Early returns mixed for familiar first-year coaches
January 27, 2017

The coaching carousel is a rite of late spring in college basketball, a chance for the next hot young coach to cash in on an unexpected March run or for more established faces to get a second (or third, or fourth) shot at turning around a floundering program.

The spring of 2016 featured a heavy dose of the latter, as coaches with a proven track record whose time at their old jobs may have grown a bit stale sprinted at new opportunities.

With less than two months to go before Selection Sunday, there have been some pleasant surprises (we see you, Tubby Smith) and some harsh reality checks (hunker down for the long run, Kevin Stallings).

A quick look at who has found the grass greener in more ways than just the numbers on their paychecks, and who might be regretting throwing up that ''for sale'' sign:

---

Coach: TUBBY SMITH

Old Spot: Texas Tech

New Spot: Memphis (15-6, 5-3 AAC)

What's Working: The well-traveled 65-year-old Smith has provided the Tigers with a needed dose of discipline, particularly when the ball is in their hands. Memphis, 90th in the country in turnovers per game (11.6), a marked improvement from last season when they were 173rd (12.1). Having a breakout star in guard Dedric Lawson also helps. The 6-foot-8 swingman was spectacular during the nonconference schedule (11 double-doubles) but has leveled off a bit of late. No biggie, as brother K.J. Lawson and guard Markel Crawford give Smith three legitimate scorers to go to when things get tight.

---

Coach: JOSH PASTNER

Old Spot: Memphis

New Spot: Georgia Tech (12-8, 4-4 ACC)

What's Working: Kind of depends on when you check in on the Yellow Jackets, who have been trying to escape the bottom half of the ACC for the better part of a decade. Say this about Pastner, at least his team isn't boring. The Yellow Jackets have swung between spectacular (home wins over ACC royalty North Carolina and insurgent Florida State ) and sorry (a 53-point beat down at Duke and nonconference losses to Penn State and Ohio). Georgia Tech is 4-4 in the ACC with only two games left against ranked teams (both vs. Notre Dame). An NCAA berth may be out of reach, but the postseason may not.

---

Coach: JAMIE DIXON

Old Spot: Pittsburgh

New Spot: TCU (14-6, 3-5 Big 12)

What's Working: The defense for starters. The Horned Frogs are allowing four points a game less than they did last season and holding opponents to just 42 percent shooting, a significant bump over 2015-16. The Horned Frogs' three victories in conference play already equal their Big 12 win total from last season. Though Dixon's rebuilding project at his alma mater is still in the early stages, his impact in changing the culture has been immediate. For the first time in a while, TCU has something it has lacked for the better part of two decades: momentum.

---

Coach: KEVIN STALLINGS

Old Spot: Vanderbilt

New Spot: Pittsburgh (12-8, 1-6 ACC)

What's Not Working: At the moment, everything. Having four seniors to work with was supposed to ease Stallings' transition after 17 years with the Commodores. The Panthers have one of the nation's best combos in Michael Young and Jamel Artis, but Dixon left behind little depth and there seems to be a disconnect between Stallings and his players. Pitt struggles to get stops and is last or next to last in the ACC in field goal defense, 3-point field goal defense, scoring margin, rebounding margin and steals, shortcomings on display in an embarrassing 55-point meltdown against Louisville on Tuesday. Stallings will almost certainly have time to get it right, though it may take a while. Even Benjamin Printz, who oversaw a 106-13 loss to Westminster College in 1906, got a second season on the job.

---

Coach: MARVIN MENZIES

Old Spot: New Mexico State

New Spot: UNLV (10-11, 5-5 Mountain West)

What's Not Working: Menzies made New Mexico State an NCAA Tournament regular, reaching the dance five times in nine seasons with the Aggies. He landed the UNLV job only after Chris Beard - hired to replace the fired Dave Rice - got cold feet and headed to Texas Tech instead. The defense-first philosophy Menzies used so effectively at New Mexico State hasn't translated quite so well from the WAC to the deeper and more rugged Mountain West. Scoring has been an issue, too, as tends to happen when you're last in the conference in free throw shooting (68 percent).

---

Coach: BRYCE DREW

Old Spot: Valparaiso

New Spot: Vanderbilt (9-11, 3-5 SEC)

What's Not Working: The guy who was part of the family business for so long at Valpo - sending the Crusaders into the Sweet 16 in 1998 while playing for dad Homer, then coaching his alma mater to two NCAA appearances - seemed like a perfect fit for the Commodores. It may very well work out in the long run, but not yet. Vanderbilt spent the latter days of Stallings' tenure unable to separate itself from the pack behind Kentucky in the SEC. Things haven't exactly cleared up under Drew. Vandy continues to tantalize with its potential (see a road win at Florida), but still lacks a killer instinct at times (see a late meltdown in a home loss to Arkansas on Tuesday).

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) Five of the eight players in No. 3 Gonzaga's main rotation have never lost in a Bulldogs uniform, and indications are it could be a long while before they ever do.

With a favorable road ahead, the lone undefeated team in the AP Top 25 appears likely to stay that way and could claim the top spot in the poll next Monday after losses this week by No. 1 Villanova and No. 2 Kansas.

Not only that, this Gonzaga team appears deeper than the 2013 squad that earned the Zags their first and only No. 1 ranking.

''This group has done an excellent job of focusing on the process,'' coach Mark Few said after Gonzaga demolished San Diego 79-43 on Thursday night for its 21st consecutive victory, the longest streak in the nation. ''We are not focusing on stuff we can't control.''

One thing they can't control is poll voters. Even if Gonzaga (21-0, 9-0 West Coast) wins at bottom-dwelling Pepperdine on Saturday night, voters might decide another team is more worthy of the top spot.

Don't tell that to the Gonzaga fans, who erupted in chants of ''Number One! Number One!'' in the closing seconds of the win over San Diego.

Gonzaga burst onto the national scene with a magical run to the Elite Eight in 1999, and the clock has never struck midnight for this Cinderella program. They have made 18 consecutive trips to the NCAA Tournament, and are almost certain to go again this year as they run away from their rivals in the West Coast Conference.

This year's team features veterans Przemek Karnowski and Josh Perkins. But the Zags also start three transfer students from Power Five programs in Nigel Williams-Goss, Johnathan Williams and Jordan Mathews. Freshman posts Zach Collins and Killian Tillie provide quality minutes off the bench.

Williams-Goss, Mathews, Williams, Collins and Tillie have yet to lose in a Gonzaga uniform.

Collins, a 7-foot forward from Las Vegas who is one of the top recruits in program history, said a top ranking would be special.

''It would be amazing to be No. 1 in the nation,'' Collins said. ''Everybody's goal is to be the best team in the country.''

Still, this squad is also aware that there's plenty of season left.

''We have to get better each week,'' said Williams-Goss, a junior who transferred from Washington. ''Our end game is in March to play our best basketball.''

March has been something of a mixed bag for the Zags.

While the team has made every NCAA Tournament this century, and reached the Elite Eight in 2015, there is some angst over the Zags' failure to reach a Final Four.

The 2013 team that featured Kelly Olynyk, now with the Boston Celtics, and Elias Harris reached No. 1 near the end of the season and earned a No. 1 seed in the tournament. But they were bounced in the round of 32 by Wichita State.

This year's team is deeper, with eight key contributors. The Zags have seven players who average at least 8 points per game. They are limiting opponents to 63 points per game, while scoring nearly 85.

Few, who has never missed an NCAA Tournament as head coach, points to strong defensive efforts all season as a key.

''We haven't taken a night off,'' Few said of his defense after Gonzaga limited San Diego to 32 percent shooting. ''That stood out.''

The Zags have victories this season over No. 7 Arizona, No. 21 Saint Mary's and No. 25 Florida, plus Iowa State, Akron and Tennessee. They are ninth in the latest RPI.

But the West Coast Conference is not having a stellar year, and that tends to take some of the shine off Gonzaga's record.

The Zags are beating conference foes by an average of 25 points per game, and have led wire-to-wire in their past four victories. Gonzaga has trailed for just 25 minutes total in nine conference games so far.

That leads critics to grumble their record wouldn't be as gaudy in a tougher league.

Gonzaga has nine games remaining, with the toughest figuring to be a rematch at Saint Mary's on Feb. 11. This is a down year for BYU, whom the Bulldogs must face twice.

So Gonzaga has a very good chance to finish the regular season undefeated, as Kentucky did in 2015 and Wichita State did in 2014. Few isn't going there yet, however.

''I'm not looking at March,'' he said.

No. 7 Arizona gets big boost from Trier's return
January 27, 2017

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) Allonzo Trier had a long, strange journey while waiting to be cleared after inadvertently using performance-enhancing drugs, never knowing when that day might come.

When it finally did, the emotions washed over Arizona's sophomore guard.

''I broke down when I was told,'' Trier said Thursday after his first home game with the seventh-ranked Wildcats. ''It was an emotional moment for me.''

Trier was expected to be the key cog in Arizona's lineup after bypassing a shot at the NBA to return for his sophomore season.

The athletic 6-foot-5 guard had a strong freshman year after being the marquee player in coach Sean Miller's recruiting class, averaging 14.8 points per game while shooting 46 percent from the floor. He was expected to be even better this season and become a leader for the Wildcats and Miller's latest blue chip class.

Instead, he mysteriously faded into the background.

Trier was replaced at the last minute for Pac-12 media day in October and opened the season in street clothes, suspended for reasons not disclosed by the university.

The suspension remained in place well into January as speculation grew about the reason Trier wasn't playing.

News broke last week that Trier had tested positive for a PED and he quickly issued a statement, saying he was given a banned substance by a well-intentioned but misguided person not affiliated with the university following an injury.

Trier won an appeal with the NCAA to a yearlong suspension in November, but he had to wait until the substance completely cleared his system. The suspension lasted 19 games and he was finally cleared for Saturday's game against UCLA, contributing 12 points in the 96-85 road victory.

Trier played his first game at McKale Center on Thursday against Washington State and was greeted with a standing ovation when he entered early in the first half. He ended up leading Arizona with 17 points and dished out seven assists in the 79-62 victory.

''It was a great feeling,'' Trier said. ''It felt like it was an eternity for how long I haven't played in there. But I was really excited, the energy was great.''

Though Trier wasn't allowed to play during his suspension, he was able to practice and be around his teammates. Not knowing when the suspension would end was tough, but he prepared as if the next game on the schedule would be his first.

''I was always in the gym, I practiced with my teammates every day and I tried to make an impact in any way I could,'' he said. ''So even though I couldn't play, I tried to be there for my teammates and cheer them on. And in practice I tried to do my part and practicing hard and helping these guys get prepared for the games.''

Trier gives Arizona a huge boost as it heads toward March. While numerous teams are losing players to injuries and other circumstances, the Wildcats have added one of the best players in the Pac-12, a proven scorer with a knack for making big shots.

But with that comes an adjustment period.

Without Trier, Miller had to shift his lineup around, giving some players more responsibility and playing time. Those will both change now that Trier is back and some players will have to adapt to different roles.

There also will be a mesh factor. Though Trier has been practicing all along, there's a different dynamic during games, so Miller will have to figure out rotations and the players will have to get a feel for playing with their old-but-new teammate.

Trier said after Thursday's game that it ''feels funny'' on the court at times and Miller used similar words to describe Arizona's game against Washington State.

''Everybody else has to learn their role, (Trier) has to learn his and I think that as we keep moving forward, it will even out as it always does,'' Miller said. ''Every game that goes by, he'll eventually settle in.''

KU's Bragg suspended for rules violation
January 27, 2017

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) Kansas forward Carlton Bragg has been suspended indefinitely for a violation of team rules.

Coach Bill Self said in announcing the suspension late Thursday that the violation isn't connected to an investigation into an alleged rape at his team's dorm in December. No charges have been filed, and police have not publicly identified any suspects. Self says the investigation has given him no reason yet to discipline any players.

Self also suspended Bragg last month after the 20-year-old sophomore was charged with misdemeanor battery. Bragg was reinstated when prosecutors dropped the charge and charged the woman who accused him of shoving her. Prosecutors said law enforcement obtained surveillance video showing a woman repeatedly striking a man.

The No. 2 Jayhawks play at No. 4 Kentucky on Saturday.
