Monday's Tip Sheet
January 15, 2017

A few of the top college basketball teams in the nation will be looking to start the week with another victory as favorites in a trio of conference matchups in the Big East, ACC and Big 12.

To get the betting action underway, Villanova will play host to Seton Hall in a 6:30 p.m. (ET) tip. As part of ESPN’s Big Monday double header, Syracuse will go on the road to face North Carolina in the opener followed by Iowa State at home against Kansas.

Seton Hall Pirates at No. 3 Villanova Wildcats (FOX Sports 1, 6:30 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Villanova -14

Betting Matchup

Seton Hall will wrap up a tough three-game road trip on Monday night after losing to Marquette 89-86 as 5 ½-point underdogs and to Providence 65-61 as two-point favorites in the first two games. The Pirates are now 2-3 both straight-up and against the spread in Big East play as part of an overall record of 12-5 (7-9 ATS). The total has stayed UNDER in three of their last five road games. Junior forward Desi Rodriguez has posted a combined 50 points in his last two starts to raise his season average to 16.6 points per game.

The Wildcats have won their last three games both SU and ATS since that Jan. 4 loss to Butler, which was their only setback against 17 wins. They are 12-6 ATS this season and the total has stayed UNDER in seven of their last nine games. Freshman guard Donte DiVincezo came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points while shooting 7-for-10 from the field in this past Saturday’s 70-57 road victory against St. Johns with Villanova closing as a 12 ½-point favorite.

Betting Trends

--The Pirates are 12-5 ATS in their last 17 road games and the total has stayed UNDER in nine of their last 11 games played on a Monday.

--The Wildcats have covered in five of their last seven games following a SU win and the total has stayed UNDER in all seven of those contests.

--Head-to-head in this Big East battle, the underdog has covered in five of the last six meetings. The total has stayed UNDER in six of the last seven games between the two.

Syracuse Orange at No. 11 North Carolina Tar Heels (ESPN, 7 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: North Carolina -14.5

Betting Matchup

Syracuse (11-7 SU, 6-7 ATS) opened play in the ACC this season with a road loss to Boston College as a 10-point favorite, but it quickly avenged that loss on Saturday with a 76-53 victory over the Eagles as a 12-point favorite at home. The Orange are now 3-2 (SU and ATS) in conference play. Four Syracuse starters scored in double figures on Saturday lead by freshman guard Tyrus Battle’s career-high 21 points. Defensively, the Orange forced 20 turnovers in that win.
The Tar Heels have won their last four conference games following a stunning 75-63 road loss to Georgia Tech as 17-point favorites in this season’s ACC opener. They are now 16-3 SU (11-8 ATS) overall and the total has gone OVER in four of their last six games. In Saturday’s impressive 96-83 rout against No. 9 Florida State, junior guard Joe Berry Jr. led the way with 26 points. Junior forward Justin Jackson, who leads the team in scoring with 17.9 PPG, added 22 points to the winning cause.

Betting Trends

--The Orange are have failed to cover in their last four road games and the total has gone OVER in their last five games played on the road.

--The Tar Heels are 16-5 ATS in their last 21 games at home and the total has stayed UNDER in five of their last seven home games.

--The favorite in this ACC tilt has gone 3-1-1 ATS in the last five meetings. The total has gone OVER in three of the last four meetings including North Carolina’s 83-66 victory against Syracuse in last season’s Final Four as a 10-point favorite.

No. 2 Kansas Jayhawks at Iowa State Cyclones (ESPN, 9 p.m. ET)

Opening Odds: Kansas -3

Betting Matchup

The Jayhawks (16-1 SU, 5-10 ATS) should lay claim to the top spot in both national polls this week following Baylor’s recent loss to West Virginia combined with their victories against Oklahoma on the road and Oklahoma State at home. However, they failed to cover as double-digit favorites in both contests to fall to 1-5 ATS in their last six games. Senior guard Frank Mason III continues to lead Kansas in both points (20.5) and assists (5.5). He posted a total of 50 points in his last two games.

Iowa State (11-5 SU, 7-6 ATS) is coming off an 84-77 loss to TCU this past Saturday as a 2 ½-point road underdog. The total went OVER the 142 ½-point closing line in that loss and it has gone OVER in four of the Cyclones’ last six games. They are scoring 81.6 PPG with four different players averaging at least 11 points a game. Senior guard Nazareth Mitrou-Long scored a team-high 19 points in Saturday’s losing cause. He has now exceeded his scoring average (15.7 PPG) in four of his last five games.

Betting Trends

--The Jayhawks are 1-5 ATS in their last six games following a SU win and the total has gone OVER or ended as a PUSH in 11 of their past 15 Monday games.

--The Cyclones are 5-2-1 ATS in their last eight games played on Monday and the total has stayed UNDER in seven of those contests.

--Iowa State has a 5-1 edge ATS in its last six games against Kansas and the total has gone OVER in 11 of the last 15 games in this Big 12 matchup.

Preview: Golden Eagles (12-5) at Bulldogs (15-3)
Date: January 16, 2017 12:00 PM EDT

INDIANAPOLIS -- Butler and Marquette delivered impressive victories Saturday afternoon, but neither team could enjoy it long because they start a five-game Martin Luther King Jr. Day televised Big East marathon.

Marquette (12-5, 3-2) will play at No. 12 Butler (15-3, 4-2) at noon ET on Monday at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Butler rallied from a 31-25 halftime deficit to defeat No. 15 Xavier 83-78 on Saturday.

Bulldogs coach Chris Holtmann was proud of his team's second-half showing but couldn't dwell on it.

"We have to get ready for a really good Marquette team in less than 36 hours, so that's going to be our focus," Holtmann said.

Butler senior Andrew Charbascz said short memories are key after wins and losses in a tough conference. The Bulldogs were dominated in a 75-64 loss at No. 8 Creighton on Wednesday.

"You want to celebrate these victories, and then you have to move on the next one," Chrabascz said. "We know we have Marquette coming in Monday, a very talented team. So we know we have to move on to the next one.

"Against Creighton, we didn't dictate anything. This game we tried to dictate a little more."

Butler pounded the basketball inside in the second half, hitting 29 of 32 free throws after intermission. The Bulldogs have won 13 consecutive home games, including 10 this season.

The Golden Eagles, who routed visiting DePaul 83-58 on Saturday, will have even less time to prepare because of travel time.

"Butler is an outstanding team," Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski said. "They've had a terrific year. Hinkle Fieldhouse is a great place to play.

"It's a very quick turnaround for us. Obviously, we're not going to be able to do a whole lot on the floor, so a lot of it is going to be film study and walk-through, so we're as fresh as we possibly can be Monday morning."

Like Butler, Marquette is playing its third game in six days. The Golden Eagles edged visiting Seton Hall 89-86 in overtime on Wednesday.

"Butler is the best team of the three we've played so far," junior guard Andrew Rowsey said. "We've got to go in there with laser focus and prepare to win."

Rowsey scored a team-high 24 points, hitting 6 of 7 3-pointers, against visiting DePaul. Marquette sank 13 of 27 3-point shots.

"I saw great ball movement and great ball movement led to some open shots and where our guys were able to set their feet and shoot in-rhythm shots," Wojciechowski said. "We played really unselfish during that (first-half) spurt, some of the most unselfish basketball we've played all year.

"One of the the things that we talk about on a daily basis is on every possession we want the ball to find the best shot and we have enough good players where that may mean one guy has a (big) day today and another guy has a day the next game. I think our guys bought into that (against DePaul) and hopefully that will continue."

Wojciechowski was pleased with the job that Marquette did defensively, too, holding DePaul to 38 percent shooting from the field.

Preview: Bluejays (17-1) at Musketeers (13-4)
Date: January 16, 2017 2:00 PM EDT

CINCINNATI -- The Xavier Musketeers are in the midst of the toughest three-game stretch in program history. They are hoping to salvage one of them.

The 15th-ranked Musketeers were routed 79-54 earlier in the week at previously No. 1-ranked Villanova before losing 83-78 on Saturday at No. 12 Butler.

In both of those games, Xavier played well in the first half before crumbling at halftime. The Musketeers led by six points at halftime at Hinkle Fieldhouse.

"I'm happy that we didn't completely melt and cave like we did at Villanova," Xavier head coach Chris Mack told the Cincinnati Enquirer following the Butler loss. "But there are some things to be unhappy about. The fact that when it kept going back and forth ... we couldn't get a stop."

Next up for the Musketeers is No. 8 Creighton on Monday afternoon as part of the Big East Conference's Martin Luther King Day marathon. It's the highest ranking ever for the Bluejays, who have established themselves as a legitimate contender for the Big East title.

Among the key questions for Xavier going into Monday's matinee is the condition of point guard Edmond Sumner, who injured his shoulder in the final second of the loss at Butler. Sumner wore tape on his right shoulder throughout the game then hurt it again during a collision with a Villanova player.

"He's in some pain," Mack said. "I think he'll be fine. I asked (athletic trainer David) Fluker. ... He's in some pain. That's about all I have."

Sumner overcame a slow start on Saturday before finishing strong with 22 points on 12 of 13 from the free-throw line. He also had three assists in the loss.

If Xavier is going to snap its two-game losing streak, it needs more production from junior guard Trevon Bluiett who leads the team with 16.8 points per game but was a combined 4-of-20 shooting in the losses at Villanova and Butler.

Xavier (13-4, 3-2 Big East) will need Sumner healthy and Bluiett producing against a Creighton squad which is led by one of the top guards in the nation in Maurice Watson Jr., who had six assists on Saturday giving him 388 for his career, tied for ninth in school history.

Creighton (17-1, 4-1 Big East) stepped away from Big East play on Saturday, beating Division II Truman State 101-69 to match its best start in program history. It's the most wins to start a season with one or fewer losses since 2012-13.

The Bluejays are hoping to get senior center Zach Hanson back by February. He has been out since having foot surgery last month. Hanson has removed his protective boot and worked out on the court prior to Saturday's game against Truman State. Hanson was averaging eight points per game prior to the injury.

"It's going to be a matter of how it reacts as we stress it more," said Creighton head coach Greg McDermott. "We don't want to bring him back too early."

Xavier leads the series 12-10, but it has been hotly contested since the teams joined the Big East. The Musketeers and Bluejays split last season's series with XU winning 98-93 at Cintas Center and Creighton rolling to a 70-56 win at home earlier in the season.

Since joining the Big East, Creighton has won four of seven meetings, including winning once at Cintas Center.

Preview: Pirates (12-5) at Wildcats (17-1)
Date: January 16, 2017 6:30 PM EDT

VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Donte DiVincenzo has steadily moved up the depth chart as a redshirt freshman for third-ranked Villanova.

After DiVincenzo scored a career-best 19 points in a 70-57 win at St. John's on Saturday at Madison Square Garden, more minutes are surely warranted for the ever-improving guard.

DiVincenzo was 7 of 10 shots from the field and 3 of 5 from beyond the arc in a stellar 31-minute performance.

The win pushed the Wildcats to 17-1 overall and 5-1 in the Big East in preparation for a quick turnaround with a visit from Seton Hall on Monday night at 6:30 p.m. ET at The Pavilion.

"My focus is on defending and rebounding," DiVincenzo told reporters after the win over St. John's. "If the shots are falling, great."

Villanova has taken the last 14 meetings with Seton Hall at its on-campus arena but lost 69-67 in the championship game of last year's Big East tournament title game. The Wildcats rebounded in a big way to win six straight games in the NCAA Tournament on their way to a national championship.

A win over Seton Hall would give Villanova its 47th in a row at its on-campus arena, breaking the previous mark of 46 set from 2007 to 2011.

For the second straight game, Villanova got off to a slow start against St. John's before rebounding. It's a trend the Wildcats would like to halt.

"We didn't bring it," said preseason national player of the year candidate Josh Hart, who had 11 points and six rebounds against St. John's. "That's on the three seniors -- Kris (Jenkins), Darryl (Reynolds) and myself. We have to set a tone and be examples for these guys. That's something that we didn't do."

Still, the Wildcats keep winning. Only an eight-point loss at Butler has stymied what would be an unbeaten team.

"I'm not upset," Villanova coach Jay Wright said. "We've got great guys. I'm just being honest. There are a lot of positives to take out of this game.

"No one is surprised by Donte, but it's good to see him do it on the road, in a big-time setting at the Garden. Getting Eric (Paschall) going is big for us. Kris, Josh and Jalen (Brunson) have been in so many big games for us and have come through so many times, we know we've got that."

Seton Hall (12-5, 2-3 Big East) has dropped two straight games on the road -- an 89-86 overtime loss at Marquette and a 65-61 decision at Providence.

In the loss at Providence, Seton Hall was paced by junior Desi Rodriguez, who scored 20 points. Angel Delgado posted his 11th consecutive double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds, moving past Eddie Griffin, who had 10 consecutive double-doubles in 2001.

Seton Hall did manage to outrebound Providence 39-29.

Yet the reeling Pirates are beginning to frustrate coach Kevin Willard.

"It's an embarrassment," Willard said in his postgame radio interview after the loss at Providence. "We jogged around giving up easy transition buckets.

"I am so -- I wouldn't say disappointed. I am past that. I am more frustrated. ... We're going to make a little change."

Whatever change that might be will be a difficult task at Villanova.

Preview: Orange (11-7) at Tar Heels (16-3)
Date: January 16, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- A Final Four rematch might not look all that attractive on the surface, but players for No. 11 North Carolina know this is no time to back off.

The Tar Heels picked up a notable victory during the weekend prior to a home matchup with Syracuse on Monday night at the Smith Center.

Coming off a sizzling 96-83 conquest of ninth-ranked Florida State puts the Tar Heels in good shape in the Atlantic Coast Conference more than a quarter of the way through the conference schedule.

"The way we played, we hope we can carry it on," North Carolina forward Isaiah Hicks said. "This really shows we're capable of being a great team."

This also could be a memorable game for another reason for the Tar Heels (16-3, 4-1 ACC). Coach Roy Williams makes his first attempt at career coaching victory No. 800.

Syracuse (11-7, 3-2) has struggled at times, but the Orange has won three of its last four games and might be rounding into form just in time.

Syracuse Jim Boeheim said there hasn't been an overhaul in strategy.

"We were doing the same thing we were doing, it just worked," he said. "A couple of small things on offense, a couple of small things on defense. Nothing major."

Tar Heels guard Joel Berry said the Tar Heels should be able to refocus quickly after playing in front of Saturday's sellout crowd.

"We've got to get our legs back," he said.

North Carolina defeated Syracuse three times last year, including twice late in the season by winning on Senior Night and then in the Final Four semifinals in Houston.

Syracuse was a surprise Final Four team, but this season the surprise has gone the other way. Inconsistency has meant the Orange dropped out of the national rankings.

"We probably should have been a little bit more cautious about this team," Boeheim said of the expectations. "It may say 'senior' next to their name or 'grad student' or whatever it says, but they're first-year players for us."

He's referring to graduate transfers Andrew White and John Gillon, who each will be playing at the Smith Center for the first time.

Syracuse has been more successful recently by using a rotation of mostly six or seven players.

"We were a little stable with that," Boeheim said of the lineup. "(Gillon at point guard) really stabilized the offense and we hadn't been very stable. ... We beat (some) good (ACC) teams. We hadn't been able to beat anybody, not (to mention) a good team."

The Tar Heels had eight players log more than 10 minutes against Florida State. Playing at a high level all the time is one of their goals.

"Now it's just 40 minutes. Do it all 40 minutes. We can't have lapses where we start off good and have that lapse, they come back and we pick it back up," Hicks said. "We just have to cut that out."

North Carolina reached the 90-point mark for the 11th time this season, marking the first Florida State opponent to score that much. For the first time in six years, the Tar Heels had three players score 20 or more points in a game with Berry (26 points), Hicks (22) and Justin Jackson (22).

The Tar Heels are aware of some of the pitfalls that can be caused by Syracuse's 2-3 zone.

"They always get steals in that zone," Hicks said.

Syracuse hasn't won any of its five games played outside the Carrier Dome this season, including a 0-3 record in true road games.

Armadillo: Tuesday's six-pack

— Each player on Super Bowl winner gets $107,000; each player on losing side gets $53,000.

— If I ran the Sacramento Kings, we’d trade DeMarcus Cousins before giving him a $200M contract; you give a guy that much cash, he has to be beyond reproach.

— Rory McIlroy has a rib injury, withdrew from the Abu Dhabi golf event this week.

— NBA’s Denver Nuggets have players from six different countries.

— #26 national basketball recruit, PG Matt Coleman chose Texas over Duke.

— Ram coach Sean McVay’s father played safety at Indiana, where his coach was ESPN’s Lee Corso.

**********

Armadillo: Tuesday's List of 13: Nobody asked me, but……..

13) When Orlando Magic coach Frank Vogel was in 8th grade, he appeared on the David Letterman Show in the Stupid Human Tricks segment, spinning a basketball on a toothbrush while brushing his teeth. I’m not a sure how a kid starts practicing that stunt, but he did and got good enough to be on national TV.

12) Speaking of the Magic, guard DJ Augustin has played for nine different NBA teams over the last six seasons; he’s banked roughly $28.3M in his career and must be an expert packer, too.

11) If you’re Mike Tomlin, whats your reaction that one of your star players was broadcasting your postgame speech live over the Interweb? Would’ve been nice if Antonio Brown had turned the camera off when Tomlin started speaking, but that isn’t what happened.

10) Kansas City Chiefs are first team in NFL playoff history to score multiple touchdowns, allow zero touchdowns in a playoff game, and still lose the game.

9) When the Packers hired Mike McCarthy as coach in 2006, the guy he beat out for the job was Sean Payton. Would’ve been fun to see Payton work with Aaron Rodgers.

8) Tex-Arlington 89, South Alabama 83— Glad to see the Sun Belt get exposure on ESPN; back when ESPN first started, Sun Belt was one of the first leagues to let ESPN broadcast its games on a regular basis.

7) Creighton 72, Xavier 67— Costly victory for Bluejays; senior PG Mo Watson went down with a knee injury and it didn’t look good- he said he heard it pop, rarely a good thing.

6) Saturday was just third time ever that the LA Lakers/Clippers/Kings all played in Staples Center on the same day.

5) After the 2014 college basketball season, South Florida tried to hire Manhattan coach Steve Masiello as basketball coach, but changed their mind after it turned out he was a couple courses short of having graduated from college at Kentucky.

Masiello got Manhattan to the NCAAs two years in a row and was one of hot names in the coaching carousel, but the last couple of years, Jaspers are just 20-29 and are struggling in the MAAC this season. Masiello has since gotten his college degree, but isn’t a hot name anymore, which seems ludicrous. He hasn’t gotten dumber the last two years.

Anyway, the South Florida job is open again; curious to see if USF goes after Masiello this time. They were also interested in then-UNLV coach Dave Rice back then; he’s an assistant at Nevada these days. Either guy would be a good hire for the Bulls.

4) There will be three college football games at Fenway Park next fall: UConn-Boston College, Brown-Dartmouth and UMass-Maine.

Long time ago, back in the 60’s, the Patriots played home games at Fenway.

3) Turns out Derrick Rose got fined $193,848 for missing that game last week; when the NBA suspends a player for a game, they take 1/110th of a player’s salary- for Rose thats the number. So not answering a phone call and making up a lie for 30 seconds cost him $193,848. Wow.

2) There is a new casino opening in Schenectady on February 8, around 15 miles from Armadillo World HQ. Am curious to see what it is like. Also wonder how long it will be before we can go there and bet on ballgames, like in Las Vegas.

1— Last week I asked about why the Chargers would move to LA instead of just staying where they were; read over the weekend where the value of the Charger franchise would roughly double after the move, more than making up for the $550M relocation fee they will pay out over the next decade. When in doubt, the answer is always “its about the money”.

Tuesday's Tip Sheet
January 17, 2017

There’s a 23-game college hoops card on tap tonight, including Big Ten, Big 12, ACC and SEC showdowns. There are four games in the SEC, a league with six RPI Top-50 schools and 12 in the Top 100. However, the conference, which has been way down for most of the last decade, has only three teams that appear to be locks to make the NCAA Tournament.

Those would be Kentucky, Florida and South Carolina, a team that’s 11-0 when star player Sindarius Thorwell has been in uniform. Then there’s Georgia, Ole Miss and Arkansas, three clubs that are perennial bubble teams.

Let’s break down UK’s game tonight, along with Michigan at Wisconsin, before getting into a bunch of national nuggets.

**Kentucky at Mississippi State**

-- Kentucky is currently ranked fifth in the nation in the AP poll and sixth in the RPI Rankings. The Wildcats are 1-2 vs. RPI Top-25 foes, 4-2 versus the Top 50 and 9-2 against the Top 100. They own neutral court wins over Michigan State (69-48) and North Carolina (103-100), in addition to two more Top-50 triumphs at Ole Miss (99-76) and vs. Arkansas (97-71). John Calipari’s team took its two defeats at home vs. UCLA (97-92) and at Louisville (73-70).

-- As of early this morning, most books had Kentucky (15-2 straight up, 11-6 against the spread) listed as a 13-point favorite at The Hump in Starkville. One offshore shop had the total at 159 points.

-- Kentucky is in a first-place tie with Florida atop the SEC standings with both schools sporting 5-0 record in league play. South Carolina is one-half game back with a 4-0 conference ledger, while Mississippi St. is in two-way tie for fourth place with Alabama. The Bulldogs and Crimson Tide owns 3-1 SEC records.

-- Kentucky has played three true road games, going 2-1 SU and 1-2 ATS. As noted, Cal’s squad lost by three at U of L and won easily at Ole Miss. The Wildcats won 87-81 at Vandy last Tuesday but failed to cover as 12-point road ‘chalk.’

-- UK is off of Saturday’s 92-72 non-covering win over Auburn as a 24.5-point home favorite. The 164 combined points dipped ‘under’ the 171-point total. Malik Monk was the catalyst for the winners, producing 24 points and six assists compared to only one turnover. The freshman guard hit 8-of-14 attempts from the field and 4-of-8 from long distance. Edrice Adebayo contributed 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots, while De’Aaron Fox finished with 13 points, four rebounds and five assists compared to just one turnover.

- Monk is averaging a team-high 21.8 points per game while shooting at a 50.8 percent clip from the field. Monk is making 41.5 percent of his 3-pointers and 85.0 percent of his free throws. Fox (16.5 PPG) is averaging 6.4 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.7 steals per game with a 108/38 assists-to-turnovers ratio. Isaiah Briscoe is averaging 15.4 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.3 APG.

-- Mississippi State (12-4 SU, 8-5 ATS) is No. 98 in the RPI Rankings. The Bulldogs won their only game against an RPI Top-50 foe, capturing an 84-78 win at Arkansas. They’re 3-3 versus the Top 100, beating Texas A&M at home and winning an 80-68 decision over Boise St.

-- Ben Howland’s team has taken losses at home vs. Lehigh, Alabama and East Tennessee St., in addition to a neutral-court loss vs. Central Florida. Three of those defeats came by double-digit margins, while the home loss to ETSU was a two-point game (67-65).

-- Since losing to ETSU, MSU has won six of its last seven games. Since dropping its SEC opener at home to Avery Johnson’s team, the Bulldogs have won three in a row both SU and ATS. All three wins have come as underdogs, including Saturday’s 67-59 win over Texas A&M as three-point home puppies. Freshman center Schnider Herard led four double-figure scorers with a team-best 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field and 6-of-8 makes at the charity stripe. Lamar Peters, a freshman point guard who was a four-star pull out of New Orleans, added 14 points, five steals and four assists. He was just 1-of-7 from the field but drained all 11 shots from the free-throw line. Quinndary Weatherspoon finished with 13 points, while Aric Holman had 11 points, five boards and three blocked shots.

-- Mississippi State is 7-3 SU and 3-4 ATS at home this year.

-- Weatherspoon, a sophomore guard, is averaging 17.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. He dropped 25 points on the Razorbacks at Bud Walton Arena last Tuesday in MSU’ wins as a 10-point underdog.

-- Mississippi St. has won outright in all three games as an underdog this year. The only one not mentioned already was a 95-78 blowout win at LSU on Jan. 7 when it was catching two points in Baton Rouge.

-- The ‘over’ is 11-6 overall for the ‘Cats, 2-1 in their three road assignments.

-- The ‘over’ is 7-6 overall for the Bulldogs, but they’ve seen the ‘under’ go 4-3 in their seven home games with a total.

-- Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

**Michigan at Wisconsin**

-- As of early this morning, most spots had Wisconsin (14-3 SU, 9-5 ATS) installed as an 11-point favorite while one offshore had the total at 131.

-- Wisconsin is undefeated in 10 home games with a 6-1 spread record. The Badgers are No. 17 in the AP poll and No. 32 in the RPI Rankings. They’re 0-3 against the Top 50, losing 79-67 at Creighton, 71-56 to UNC on a neutral floor and 66-55 at Purdue. UW has Top 100 wins at Marquette (93-84), at Indiana (75-68), vs. Ohio St. (89-66), vs. Georgetown (73-57) and vs. Tennessee (74-62). The win over the Buckeyes came in Madison, while the triumphs over the Hoyas and Volunteers came at the Maui Invitational en route to the finals before falling to the Tar Heels.

-- Wisconsin is in sole possession of second place in the Big Ten standings with a 3-1 conference record. Greg Gard’s team is just one-half game back of first-place Maryland with its 4-1 mark in league action. Meanwhile, Michigan is 2-3 in conference play to leave it in a three-way tie for 10th place.

-- Wisconsin is 4-1 ATS as a double-digit home favorite, 4-2 ATS in six overall games when it is favored by double digits.

-- UW is off the aforementioned beatdown of the Buckeyes on Thursday when it rolled to the win by 23 as a 10.5-point home favorite. Senior PG Bronson Koenig had 21 points on 5-of-7 shooting from long distance. Nigel Hayes had 15 points, three rebounds and four assists compared to just one turnover. Vitto Brown was also in double figures with 12 points.

-- UW is led by its seniors, Koenig and Hayes, who have played in 14 NCAA Tournament games. Eleven of those 14 games have been victories with the three defeats coming by 11 combined points. Koenig (14.4 PPG) is UW’s leading scorer, while Hayes (13.6 PPG) leads the team in assists (3.2 APG). Ethan Happ (12.9 PPG) paces the Badgers in rebounding (9.2 RPG), field-goal percentage (62.7%) and steals (1.9 SPG).

-- Michigan (12-6 SU, 4-11 ATS) is winless both SU and ATS in four road games this season.

-- John Beilein’s squad has failed to cover the number in six straight games, going 3-3 SU in those contests. Michigan snapped a two-game losing streak Saturday by winning a 91-85 decision over Nebraska as an eight-point home ‘chalk.’ Moritz Wagner led the way with 23 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots while draining 4-of-6 from downtown. The Wolverines shot 54.0 percent from the field, 50.0 percent from 3-point range (11-of-22) and 86.7 percent from the FT line (26-of-30). Zak Irvin had 21 points, five rebounds and seven assists compared to just two turnovers, while Derrick Walton Jr. finished with 20 points. Walton needed only six shots from the field to get 20 points. He made five of those six, including 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and 7-of-9 at stripe.

-- Michigan is 1-1 both SU and ATS in a pair of underdog spots, beating SMU 76-54 on a neutral court and losing 102-84 at UCLA.

-- Michigan is No. 70 in the RPI, going 2-4 versus the Top 50 and 4-5 against the Top 100. The Wolverines’ best wins have already been noted over SMU and Nebraska, but they’ve also won at home over Penn State and Texas, in addition to a neutral-court scalp of Marquette by a 79-61 count. Their only defeats to teams outside of the RPI Top 50 came vs. Va. Tech and at Iowa by six combined points.

-- As usual, Wisconsin is one of the nation’s top defensive teams. The Badgers are ranked ninth in the country in scoring defense, giving up only 60.2 PPG.

-- In this rivalry, Wisconsin has won four in a row and six of the last seven. The ‘over’ is 5-2 in the last seven head-to-head encounters.

-- The ‘over’ is 11-4 overall for the Wolverines, 3-1 in their road assignments. They’ve seen the ‘over’ hit in nine consecutive games.

-- The ‘under’ is 8-6 overall for the Badgers, 4-3 in their home outings.

-- ESPN will have the telecast at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

**B.E.’s Bonus Nuggets**

-- With the exception of junior walk-on Drew Davis, did you know Howland’s second MSU team is composed of nothing but freshmen and sophomores. When former MSU AD and new Florida AD Scott Stricklin lured Howland to Starkville, he pulled a coup of epic proportions.

-- Creighton has had the look of a legit Final Four contender all season long. That remained the case Monday when the Bluejays went on the road and beat Xavier 72-67 as three-point road underdogs. However, senior point guard Mo Watson sustained a knee injury in the first half. There’s no word yet on how long Watson will be out, but early reports indicated there was no ligament damage. That likely means he won’t be done for the season, but head coach Greg McDermott said “it could be a meniscus,” which could mean an absence of about a month or more. He’s the nation’s assists leader, handing out 8.4 helpers per game. Watson (12.9 PPG) had been shooting at a 46.9 percent clip from 3-point land this year.

-- Boise State will play host to New Mexico at Taco Bell Arena tonight at 11:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU. The Broncos saw their seven-game winning streak snapped Saturday in an 89-80 loss at Fresno State in a pick ‘em affair. They saw the ‘over’ hit for the fourth time in the last five outings. Despite the loss both SU and ATS, Leon Rice’s team is still 9-3 ATS in its last 12 contests. The Broncos are undefeated in seven home games with a 4-1 spread record.

-- Texas is a 14-point underdog tonight at Baylor. Tip-off from Waco is set for 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2. The Longhorns are 2-0 ATS as double-digit underdogs, 4-0 ATS when catching 8.5 points or more. Meanwhile, Baylor owns a 1-2 spread record in three games as a double-digit favorite.

-- N.C. State is a 3.5-point home favorite vs. Pitt at 7:00 p.m. Eastern on ESPNU. The Wolfpack has dropped three in a row and four of five both SU and ATS. All four defeats for Mark Gottfried’s team were embarrassing. They lost by 18 at Miami before one of their best performance of the season, a 104-78 win over Va. Tech as 1.5-point home underdogs. Since then, however, N.C. State lost 107-56 at UNC before losing by eight at Boston College as a 5.5-point road ‘chalk.’ Then on Sunday, Georgia Tech came into Raleigh and captured an 86-76 win as a 9.5-point road underdog. Pitt has also lost three in a row and four of five outright. However, the only really shameful outing came on Saturday when Miami went into Pennsylvania and smashed the Panthers, 72-46.

Preview: Fighting Illini (12-6) at Boilermakers (14-4)
Date: January 17, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- A time to panic, or nothing more than an important week during which to stay the course?

That's the situation for No. 21 Purdue and Big Ten Conference rival Illinois as the Boilermakers and Illini prepare for Tuesday night's game in Mackey Arena.

Purdue (14-4, 3-2 Big Ten) is coming off a frustrating 83-78 loss this past Thursday night at Iowa, an opponent the Boilermakers crushed 89-67 in the Dec. 28 conference opener.

After Tuesday's game against Illinois and Saturday's noon game against Penn State in Mackey Arena, the Boilermakers will play seven of their final 11 conference games on the road.

Illinois (12-6, 2-3) faces a critical week on the road after dropping a 62-56 decision to Maryland Saturday in Champaign, Ill.

In addition to Tuesday's game at Purdue, Illinois plays Saturday at Michigan. If the Illini lose both road games, they will fall to 2-5 in the league.

As far as Purdue is concerned, coach Matt Painter believes the Boilermakers must stay the course.

"Any time you are in a race, you really watch it when it gets to the halfway point," Painter said of the Big Ten's 18-game, regular-season schedule. "When you are playing or coaching, you just look at the next game.

"If you have guys on your bus who don't get that, then you have immature players. That is not the case with us."

The scenario appears to be a bit more difficult for Illinois, which blew a nine-point lead against Maryland. The Illini's strong trio of guards -- Malcolm Hill (18.2), Tracy Abrams (9.9) and Jalen Coleman-Lands (9.1) -- was a collective 8 of 29 from the field and scored only 20 combined points against Maryland.

"We cut it to three with three minutes and change left, and I'm thinking we've got a shot," Illinois coach John Groce said. "Our one, two and three men went 8 of 29. That's probably not going to bode well for us. It's just disappointing, because we played some pretty good basketball this week.

"I would have liked to have gotten both of them (a midweek victory against Michigan), but it just didn't go that way. The game was hanging in the balance, and then their 14-0 run was the difference. We need to make a few more plays with our playmakers."

Purdue is averaging 82.6 points per game, getting 18.2 points and 12.6 rebounds from Caleb Swanigan, 13.3 and 5.5 from center Isaac Haas and 12.0 and 5.1 from Vince Edwards.

But the Boilermakers' perimeter defense is suspect. Minnesota guard Nate Mason had 31 points in a New Year's Day victory, and Iowa guard Peter Jok scored 29 in Thursday's victory in Iowa City.

"I'm confident in my guys," Purdue point guard P.J. Thompson said. "The Big Ten is a tough league, and we've got experienced guys in our locker room and some really competitive guys. We're going to be ready to play."

Edwards anticipates a fast start against Illinois.

"It's just got to be guys coming out ready to play," Edwards said. "We've had a couple of times this year when we haven't done it."

Preview: Longhorns (7-10) at Bears (16-1)
Date: January 17, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

WACO, Texas -- Baylor's reign as the nation's top-ranked men's basketball team was short-lived.

The Bears flew through the first two months of this season, compiling a 15-0 record. Baylor's stockpile of impressive victories over Oregon, Michigan State, Louisville and Xavier helped the Bears ascend from unranked to the No. 1 slot last Monday.

And then, a little more than 24 hours after Baylor reached the top, 10th-ranked West Virginia demolished the Bears, 89-68, in Morgantown, W. Va.

So now a new week begins with a familiar foe. Baylor (16-1, 4-1 Big 12) hosts Texas (7-10, 1-4) on Tuesday.

Sixth-ranked Baylor, which won at Kansas State on Saturday, never got a chance to play in front of its home crowd as the nation's top-ranked team. But Bears fans will probably find it easy to get up for the rival Longhorns, especially since Baylor is still very much in the hunt to end Kansas' streak of 12 consecutive Big 12 titles.

Baylor coach Scott Drew said his team showed the ability to keep looking forward, which will be crucial in the conference race.

"One thing we know in the Big 12, you've got to have a short-term memory, you've got to move on to the next game," Drew said. "And it's really hard to bounce back after a loss and go on the road, especially against a top-25 team, which Kansas State is and it's the first loss they've had at home. That was a real big win for us, momentum-wise, conference-wise. And it showed good maturity to be able to move on to the next game."

Texas, on the other hand, is slumping during head coach Shaka Smart's second season at the school. The Longhorns lost half of their nonconference games despite playing no top-25 opponents in that stretch.

Since Big 12 play started, Texas has lost four of five and suspended leading scorer Tevin Mack for a violation of team rules.

The Longhorns battled West Virginia before falling by two at home on Saturday. Smart said there were some positives, but it wasn't the boost he wanted.

"If you win that game, you can definitely say all around it's a step forward," Smart said. "We came up two-points short. The tougher-minded team won. You could see on (the Mountaineers') faces a level of resolve."

With the Longhorns struggling, the Austin media seemed more interested in talking about the future during Smart's press conference on Monday. Texas landed a commitment from Mouth of Wilson, Va., Oak Hill Academy point guard Matt Coleman, a four-star prospect, on Monday.

While Smart could not speak specifically about Coleman because of NCAA rules, he did describe the process.

"When you're in the early stages of building a program, you want to bring in high quality people that you feel like can be good players but also fit in with what you're doing," Smart said. "We need to get better and part of that is adding guys to our program that can help us get better."

Preview: Wildcats (15-2) at Bulldogs (12-4)
Date: January 17, 2017 7:00 PM EDT

No. 5 Kentucky will meet one of the hottest teams in the Southeastern Conference when the Wildcats travel to Starkville, Miss., to face Mississippi State on Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs (12-4) are in second place with a 3-1mark and riding a three-game win streak. After opening league play with a loss to Alabama, Mississippi State has reeled off consecutive wins over LSU (95-78), Arkansas (84-78) and Texas A&M (67-59).

Kentucky (15-2) is atop the SEC with a 5-0 record.

Tuesday's game will be a matchup of two of the most respected players in the league -- Kentucky's Isaiah Briscoe and State's Quinndary Weatherspoon.

Briscoe, a sophomore guard and leader of Kentucky's young team, averages 15.4 points per game.

"When I think of Kentucky, the heart and soul of that team is Briscoe," Mississippi State coach Ben Howland said Monday. "Briscoe comes up with big plays. He makes it happen. You can't say enough about Briscoe."

Briscoe is joined in the starting lineup by four freshmen. Malik Monk is the top scorer at 21.8 points per game. De'Aaron Fox checks in at 16.5 points and a team-best 108 assists. Bam Adebayo averages 13.2 points and a team-best 7.4 rebounds, and Wenyen Gabriel averages 5.5 points and 6.1 rebounds following his career-high 16 rebounds Saturday against Auburn .

Weatherspoon is the Bulldogs' leading scorer at 17.9 points per game.

"He's a tremendous player," said Kentucky assistant Joel Justus. "With a group of young, inexperienced players, he's a guy that is able to provide, maybe some stability for that group."

Weatherspoon is joined by sophomore Aric Holman at 10.4 points per game, freshman Lamar Peters (10.4), senior I.J. Ready (10.1) and freshman Mario Kegler (9.2).

"I would say that they're a team that's very similar to us," Justus said. "Weatherspoon is a guy that's a big part of their success, and having that burden of success and failure is a big burden for college basketball players, especially at a young age. He seems to be handling it quite well."

Kentucky averages 93.6 points per game while allowing 71.7. Mississippi State scores 74.4 and gives up 66.8.

"They're a team that plays extremely hard on both ends of the floor," Justus said. "They're a group that puts pressure on you. It's gonna be a hostile environment and I think our guys are excited for the challenge. It's gonna be a big Tuesday night in the SEC on the road."

Of Kentucky's five SEC wins, two have been the road -- a 99-76 rout of Ole Miss on Dec. 29 and an 87-871 win at Vanderbilt on Jan. 10.

"We have had opportunities to be on the road and test our youth, and I think for us, every time that you step out you want to see where you are, and we'll see where we are on Jan. 17," Justus said. "We hope that we're in a better place than we were a week ago when we were on the road."

Preview: Wolverines (12-6) at Badgers (14-3)
Date: January 17, 2017 9:00 PM EDT

MADISON, Wis. -- Coach Greg Gard hasn't seen any drop off in effort for No. 17 Wisconsin, despite consecutive off weekends during the first three weeks of the Big Ten Conference slate.

The schedule picks up for the Badgers with a pair of games this week. First off, Wisconsin (14-3, 3-1 Big Ten) hosts Michigan (12-6, 2-3) on Tuesday night at the Kohl Center.

The chance to develop reserve players with an aim to regulate starters' minutes is coaching staff's objective for the veteran-laden team.

"They don't waiver, there's not a lot of up and down," Gard said. "They approach every day pretty consistently, and in long part that's the mind set that's been here for a long time. They've gotten that from guys before them. (Veterans) do a pretty good job of passing that on to the younger guys.

"I think the experience has helped us. It's helped us already."

That growth was on display in the team's 89-66 win over Ohio State last Thursday as the Badgers got 31 points from their bench. Wisconsin distributed double-digit minutes to redshirt freshman guard Brevin Pritzl, junior guard Jordan Hill, sophomore forward Alex Illikainen and sophomore guard Khalil Iverson. Hill and Illikainen had two 3-pointers each in the win.

Wisconsin freshman guard D'Mitrik Trice leads all reserves with averages of 17.3 minutes and 6.3 points. Senior guard Bronson Koenig paces the team in overall scoring with 14.4 points and is shooting 44 percent from 3-point range.

Sophomore forward Moritz Wagner scored 23 points to pace four players in double-digit scoring this past Saturday as Michigan snapped a two-game losing streak with a 91-85 win over Nebraska.

Gard said Wolverines senior guard Zak Irvin (14.2 points) and junior point guard Derrick Walton Jr. (12.4) bring valuable experience to the Wolverines, but Wagner and junior forward DJ Wilson also have the capability to make impacts.

Wagner averages 12.2 points for Michigan, which leads NCAA Division I teams with fewest miscues at 9.1 turnovers per game.

"Maybe (the Wolverines) had one big guy who could shoot the 3 or stretch you from the perimeter, but not two at the same time," Gard said. "Both of them have the ability to put the ball on the floor, too. Wagner made some plays against Nebraska that were (Frank) Kaminsky-like in terms of putting the ball of the floor."

Michigan lost four straight games against Wisconsin but coach John Beilein said the Wolverines will have a "bit of bounce in our step" heading into Madison following the Nebraska win.

The Badgers pose many challenges on offense and Beilein said he respects the experience that Koenig, senior forward Nigel Hayes, senior forward Vitto Brown and senior guard Zak Showalter have established in playing their entire careers together at Wisconsin.

"There are very few ball screens, although there are, but their plan is post up, post up," Beilein said of the Badgers' strategy. "I call it the LeBron (James) post-up -- you catch it in 3 and you just dribble the guy back in. They're just really good off of that. Everybody is an elite passer.

"If you have a bunch of three- or four-year players, they play connected like crazy, defensively and offensively. We haven't been able to get to that point to have that type of consistency that they have."

Armadillo: Wednesday's six-pack

Random NFL coaches’ records on replay challenges:

— Jack Del Rio, Jax/Oak— 77 of 103, 74.8%

— Mike Mularkey, Buff/Jax/Tenn— 29 of 39, 74.4%

— Jay Gruden, Wash— 17 of 23, 73.9%

— John Fox, Car/Den/Chi— 125 of 170, 73.5%

— Bill O’Brien, Hst— 19 of 26, 73.1%

— Mike Zimmer, Minn— 15 of 21, 71.4%

No current NFL head coach has less than a 60% success rate in replay challenges.

**********

Armadillo: Wednesday's List of 13: Mid-week musings……..

13) Alex Rodriguez is going to have his own TV show on CNBC, dealing with athletes who have had financial problems in their post-playing days. The show will match athletes with “money-savvy mentors” who will advise the athletes on way to upgrade their financial situations.

12) One growing trend in college basketball; more and more teams are playing only 7-8 guys in a game, some only six. Would expect to see a rule change next year, where it’ll take six fouls to foul out, rather than five fouls.

11) Creighton guard Mo Watson tore his ACL Monday at Xavier, his college career is over. Very sad for the young man and his team; he is the Bluejays’ best player.

10) This is tremendous; 25 moving companies based in San Diego banded together and refuse to help the Chargers move north to Los Angeles.

Chargers kept Ken Whisenhunt as OC, a good move.

9) ESPN’s Sean McDonough did his first basketball telecast of the season Monday night in Chapel Hill; he seemed positively giddy to be working with Jay Bilas, after working with Jon Gruden on Monday Night Football all season. Draw your own conclusions.

8) Oklahoma City Thunder has nine games left in January; eight of them are on the road. Thunder will fly over 14,000 miles in January alone.

7) Happy birthday to the great Betty White, who turned 95 on Tuesday.

Also congrats to Roy Williams on his 800th win Monday night.

6) Phillies signed OF Michael Saunders to a 1-year deal; the oft-injured Saunders is 30, has played 130+ games in only three seasons, but he did hit 24 HR’s for Toronto LY.

5) Two guys in Las Vegas pooled $300 and money-lined the Packers in Week 12, and let it ride ever since. Their $300 investment now is worth $28,213.60 and if Green Bay wins on Sunday, it’ll be worth $76,176.70.

These guys tried the same thing LY (with two other friends) but the Cowboys lost the first week of the wager. I’m guessing the two friends who didn’t re-up this year are kicking themselves.

One of the two guys played basketball for Seth Greenberg at Long Beach State and later was an assistant coach for Greenberg, I think at South Florida.

4) Quinnipiac is 4-4 in the MAAC, an ordinary team, but they’ve covered their last seven MAAC games, making them a great team for those who wager on the Bobcats.

3) Chris Paul tore ligaments in his thumb Monday night, is out 6-8 weeks.

2) Houston Texans fired their offensive coordinator two days after their loss in Foxboro; they said “they mutually parted ways” which means they paid off his contract and told him to take a hike.

1— Interesting discussion on the Australian Open late Monday night, on how tennis players on the rise can actually play too much, if they advance further than expected in tournaments.

Marginal players play in more events, but if they go deep into the tournaments, it reduces their down time between events, increasing their risk of injury and making conditioning a lot more important. As a player improves, he/she actually reduce the number of events they play in.
