Saturday’s List of 13: Random stuff with weekend here

13) Dallas Cowboys apparently changed their mind; now Tony Romo and Mark Sanchez will see action at QB in Philly Sunday, after Dak Prescott makes his cameo appearance as the starter.

I’m guessing that Clint Longley, Babe Laufenberg and Glenn Carano won’t play for the Cowboys this week, but you never know.

12) I read the week where DeSean Jackson was “focused” on the Redskins’ game with the Giants this week, then I also read he is “intrigued” by the prospect of going back to Philadelphia as a free agent after the season. Um, both of those can’t be true.

Jackson is a really talented player; if the Eagles got rid of him the first time, my guess is he has to be a pain in the butt. You don’t just give away really talented players.

11) Prop bet in Las Vegas: Will Eldrick Woods win a PGA Tour event in 2017? No is -$150, yes is +$120.

10) This season is first time ever that over 30% of shots from floor in NBA games are 3-pointers.

9) This from the great Gil Brandt, who is very active on Twitter: in the Super Bowl era, 56 NFL teams have won their last six regular season games— 8 of those 56 teams won the Super Bowl.

Green Bay can win its sixth consecutive game Sunday night.

8) NFL’s Hall of Fame Game has been moved to Thursday night, before the induction ceremony starting next summer. Previously the game had been played on Sunday or Monday night, after Saturday’s ceremony.

7) Pretty cool on ESPN’s Orange Bowl broadcast; Bob Griese joined his son Brian and Steve Levy in the ESPN booth for a while. Brian Griese and his dad get along so well, it is great to hear.

6) Cavaliers’ coach Tyrone Lue hasn’t gotten a technical foul this season; he got one last year, because he wandered out of the coaches’ box— he wasn’t aware that was even a rule.

5) New Mexico Lobos signed a point guard from New Zealand this week; young man is the PG on the New Zealand national team, so a good get for coach Craig Neal.

4) Miami Marlins lost their replay guy Pat Shine this week; he signed on to become a minor league manager. Watching as much baseball as I do all summer, thought Miami was the best team at challenging plays and Shine was the guy responsible for that.

3) Weird boxscore from college hoop this week: Western Illinois upset Fort Wayne as a 14-point underdog. Leathernecks were only 3-3 on the foul line; they were 18-37 on 3-pointers. Teams that shoot 37 3’s and only three foul shots almost never win.

2) I’m totally convinced that handicapping bowl games is a waste of time; there are so many intangibles involved— which coaches are changing jobs and I’m talking assistant coaches as much as head coaches. Who wants to be there? Who is healthy? Who isn’t giving a full effort because they don’t want to get hurt? When in doubt, I would lean towards underdogs.

1) This is a really busy week, with a few bowl games every day and conference play starting in college basketball and then Week 17 of the NFL Sunday. An excellent time of the year, would be close to perfect if we could get rid of this damn cold weather here in beautiful upstate New York.

Preview: Musketeers (11-2) at Hoyas (8-5)
Date: December 31, 2016 11:00 AM EDT

WASHINGTON -- No. 17 Xavier shot 60 percent from the field and posted a 26-point victory against Providence at home on Wednesday in its first Big East Conference game of the season.

"I thought for the first time all season long, our team put together as complete a game as we've played all year long," said Xavier coach Chris Mack to reporters after the game.

It was the largest margin of victory (82-56) for Xavier (11-2, 1-0) in its four seasons in the Big East.

The sledding figures to be more challenging Saturday when the Musketeers play at Georgetown at the Verizon Center in Washington in their second conference contest and first Big East road test of the season.

Georgetown won at Xavier 81-72 last season while Xavier posted an 88-70 win at Georgetown. The Musketeers have won nine of 13 games between the two schools, including four of the last five.

The Hoyas (8-5, 0-1) began conference play at Marquette on Wednesday and lost 76-66, after pulling to within eight points in the second half. Georgetown had trailed by 15 points earlier in the contest.

"We dug a hole for ourselves early," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said after the game. "We were not executing at the offensive and defensive end."

Thompson realizes the Hoyas will have to handle the pressure better against Xavier, which won the battle of the boards 38-20 against Providence while hitting eight of 20 shots from 3-point range. Xavier had assists on 22 of 32 field goals and made nine steals.

"We need a level of poise," Thompson said.

Graduate guard Rodney Pryor had 23 points and seven rebounds for the Hoyas against Marquette, while sophomore guard Marcus Derrickson had 11 points, four rebounds and two assists and resurgent sophomore center Jesse Govan had 11 points and six boards.

"We have to stay together," said Pryor, a transfer from Robert Morris. "We know we have to be ready (for Xavier). We are going to get ready."

Xavier guard Trevon Bluiett had 22 points against Providence while sophomore guard Edmond Sumner had 13 and senior forward Rashid Gaston and junior guard J.P. Macura had 12 each. Bluiett is averaging 19.2 points per game this season. Gaston made all six shots from the field in 19 minutes.

"We came out with a lot of energy and just were locked in from the get go," Bluiett said. "For our first game in the Big East, we handled ourselves pretty well."

Said Gaston: "Whoever is the hot man, we like to keep going to that guy."

Xavier was picked to finish second in the Big East by The Sporting News this season, while Georgetown was pegged for fifth in the 10-team league.

Xavier has been without senior guard Myles Davis, who has missed the first 13 games after he was suspended in September after he was charged in August with misdemeanor criminal damage, according to The Providence Journal.

Govan had 20 points and 10 rebounds in the last home game for Georgetown, on Dec. 22 against North Carolina-Greensboro. He averaged 16.7 points and 8.7 rebounds in the three games before facing Marquette.

Hoyas standout L.J. Peak dealt with a groin injury against Marquette, according to Thompson. He entered the game averaging a team-high 16.9 points per contest but was held to four points. Thompson said after the game he was not sure of the status of Peak.

Peak was 1 of 8 from the floor in 22 minutes at Marquette. He told Thompson at one point he couldn't continue due to the injury.

The Hoyas had 15 turnovers Wednesday and shot just 38 percent from the field in the second half.

Georgetown, for the year, is shooting 46.9 percent from the field while opponents are making 41.5 percent. The Hoyas are hitting 40.2 percent of 3-point shots while foes are connecting just 31.4 percent of the time.

Xavier is shooting 46.2 percent from the field and averaging 76.3 points per contest, while allowing just 64.5 points. The Musketeers are making 33.9 percent of their long-range shots.

Preview: Tar Heels (12-2) at Yellow Jackets (8-4)
Date: December 31, 2016 12:00 PM EDT

ATLANTA -- North Carolina coach Roy Williams isn't quite sure his team is ready to start competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference . At least the Tar Heels get to slide into the grueling 18-game league schedule against Georgia Tech, the youngest, most inexperienced team in the league.

No. 9 North Carolina (12-2) travels to Georgia Tech (8-4) to open league play for the second straight year on Saturday at noon at McCamish Pavilion. The Tar Heels won 86-78 last year and have won the last seven meetings between the teams.

"Whether we like it or not, it's here," Williams said.

The same thing is true for Georgia Tech, which is undergoing a complete rebuild under first-year coach Josh Pastner. The Yellow Jackets were picked to finish 14th in the 15-team lead at the ACC preseason meetings.

"Obviously, most people picked us last place for league play and some have picked us to not even win a game," Pastner said. "We are going to have to get in there and find a way. We've got a tough stretch to open up, but every game in the ACC is a battle and we're excited for the opportunity. We'll get back and work at it and be ready to go on Saturday."

North Carolina has had to deal with a virus that has gone through the roster. It hit Williams and guard Joel Berry II earlier this week, requiring both to have IVs administered on Monday. Berry was able to play 23 minutes in Wednesday's 102-74 win over Monmouth, but scored only six points -- all on free throws.

North Carolina has won two straight since its 103-100 loss to No. 8 Kentucky. The Tar Heels' other loss was at No. 16 Indiana. Forward Justin Jackson leads the team with a 17.5 scoring average to go with 4.8 rebounds. Berry averages 14.4 points and 3.8 rebounds. Center Kennedy Meeks averages 13.2 points and 9.2 rebounds and Isaiah Hicks averages 12.6 points.

"I was a lot more comfortable after the second half of our last game (against Northern Iowa)," Williams said. "I thought we did some good things in the second of that game. I don't feel quite as good right now."

Georgia Tech isn't feeling real good, either. The Yellow Jackets had to come from behind to beat North Carolina A&T 59-52 on Wednesday, with little-used graduate senior Kellen McCormick scoring a season-high 12 points to spark win.

Georgia Tech has had problems scoring. It ranks last in the ACC in offense with 68.1 points per game, 21.5 points fewer than conference-leading North Carolina. The Yellow Jackets are led by center Ben Lammers, who averages 14.9 points and has been in double figures every game. Otherwise there has been no real consistent offensive threat.

"We've got to be able to make shots," Pastner said. "In the short term, we're just going to have to make some shots. In the long term, the best way to improve shooting is recruiting and we understand what we need to do to attack that. For this year we've got to make sure that we find ways to score. We're moving the ball. We've just got to make some of those open shots."

Preview: Blue Devils (12-1) at Hokies (11-1)
Date: December 31, 2016 12:00 PM EDT

It figures that Duke will garner a bulk of the attention for Saturday afternoon's Atlantic Coast Conference opener at Virginia Tech given all the issues surrounding the fifth-ranked Blue Devils.

But Virginia Tech deserves recognition as well after producing a 11-1 record through its non-conference schedule.

"It's starting," Hokies coach Buzz Williams said of the increase in intensity that will come with the beginning of conference competition. "We have to manage it the right way."

Duke (12-1) has won 10 in a row and Virginia Tech holds a seven-game winning streak, setting up an intriguing matchup at Cassell Coliseum, which is sold out for this game in Blacksburg, Va.

There's no shortage of chatter regarding the Blue Devils, who will be without preseason All-American Grayson Allen after another tripping of an opponent resulted in an indefinite suspension for the junior guard.

His punishment was announced by coach Mike Krzyzewski the day after a Dec. 21 victory against Elon. Allen tripped Elon's Steven Santa Ana, marking the third tripping situation involving Allen after a pair last February against ACC opponents.

Duke hasn't played since that game and it's unclear how long the Blue Devils will play without Allen. The situation adds to a complicated stretch for the team.

The Blue Devils entered the season with the No. 1 national ranking and a recruiting class that was revered. Yet it has been far from smooth for this team, which dealt with injuries, roster changes and now the Allen incident.

"I thought it was going to be a Red Auerbach year -- you know, break out a cigar with 10 minutes to go," Krzyzewski said.

Whether it's ongoing lineup changes precipitated by injuries or just regular growing pains, the Blue Devils seemed somewhat disjointed in a pair of games before their holiday break.

That led to concerns, something guard Luke Kennard expressed.

"We've struggled in all sorts of different aspects of the game," said Kennard, who leads the Blue Devils with 20.4 points per game. "I just don't think we're a very unselfish team right now. That's both offensively and defensively."

Duke players are continuing to adjust as roles appear to be evolving, something that's likely to take on yet another form with Allen's absence.

"We've got to figure out who we're going to be as a group," Kennard said. "It's ACC play and ACC play, it's no joke."

By defeating Maryland-Baltimore County 87-70 on Wednesday night, the Hokies continued the best start to a season since 2009-10. Yet Williams said the assignments are about to become more difficult.

"From this point forward, it's going to be our collective team (that must come through)," Williams said.

Virginia Tech sophomore swingman Chris Clarke recorded a triple-double followed by two double-doubles in the past three games.

"The guy is going to make the right decision over and over again," Williams said. "I don't think you can teach that. I think it's a gift."

Duke won the last nine meetings with Virginia Tech. The Blue Devils are beginning ACC play with a road game for the fourth time in a six-year stretch.

Virginia Tech holds a 13-game homecourt winning streak.

Preview: Cardinals (11-2) at Hoosiers (10-3)
Date: December 31, 2016 12:30 PM EDT

INDIANAPOLIS -- Two ranked teams will be looking to bounce back from conference-opening home losses when No. 6 Louisville meets No. 16 Indiana on Saturday in the Countdown Classic at Bankers Life Fieldhouse.

The Cardinals (11-2) dropped their Atlantic Coast Conference opener 61-53 to No. 12 Virginia on Wednesday. That same night, the Hoosiers (10-3) had their 26-game home winning streak snapped by Nebraska in an 87-83 Big Ten defeat.

Louisville's two setbacks were to ranked teams whereas Indiana has lost only once to a ranked foe, against No. 18 Butler 83-78 on Dec. 17 at this same venue.

Both powerhouse programs have had impressive wins, too. The Cardinals outlasted No. 6 Kentucky 73-70 on Dec. 21 as well as No. 15 Purdue 71-64 on Nov. 30, both games at home. The Hoosiers opened the season with a 103-99 overtime win over No. 3 Kansas on Nov. 11 in Hawaii and also knocked off No. 3 North Carolina 76-67 at home in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Nov. 30.

Coach Rick Pitino's Cardinals fell behind by as many as 21 points in the loss to Virginia (11-1). Louisville didn't have a double-digit scorer and missed 12 of 14 3-pointers as well as nine of 22 free throws.

"This is not a great basketball team," Pitino said. "We've had some great wins because we've done it with great effort, but our defense is not really good, our passing is not really good, and we just have to keep working and getting better because the good thing is nobody is anywhere near their potential. We saw a very poor performance out of our starters tonight at the defensive end just handling simple down screens."

Louisville had just seven assists with 14 turnovers.

Coach Tom Crean expressed similar concerns about his Hoosiers after the upset loss to the Cornhuskers (7-6). Indiana had 19 turnovers and allowed Nebraska to score a season high in points, 21 more than the Hoosiers' defensive season average.

"We didn't challenge shots enough, and made some turnovers that we just can't make," Crean said. "And it's hard to get across to any team, but especially when you get into league play when it's magnified so much is the mental errors, and we had too many of them tonight, far too many. There's a list of them. And we've got to get out of it. We've got to continue to understand how to not make the game hard for ourselves."

He was mindful of cleaning up those mistakes with an eye on the challenge that Louisville presents.

"We've got to just tighten up," Crean said. "So I'm clear on that. I don't need to see the stat sheet to know that. We'll get into the film. And I told them it's going to be a short night for them because we'll be back getting it figured out (Thursday) and getting ready for what will be an incredible battle for us on Saturday with Louisville."

Indiana averages 88.4 points per game with four players scoring in double digits. Junior guard James Blackmon Jr. averages 17.9 points, junior guard Robert Johnson 14.2, sophomore center Thomas Bryant 12.4 and sophomore forward OG Anunoby 12.0.

Louisville averages 76.1 points per game with three players scoring in double digits. Junior guard Quentin Snyder is at 11.6 points per game, sophomore guard Donovan Mitchell 11.5 and sophomore forward Deng Adel 10.2.

The Cardinals are allowing 60.3 points per game while the Hoosiers are giving up 67.6.

The two teams last met two seasons ago with Louisville prevailing 94-74 in the Jimmy V. Classic in New York City.

Preview: Wildcats (13-0) at Bluejays (13-0)
Date: December 31, 2016 1:00 PM EDT

OMAHA -- Five years ago, Creighton was a long-standing member of the Missouri Valley Conference with a future NBA first round draft pick in Doug McDermott on its roster.

Fast-forward to the final day of 2016. The Bluejays are one of the final five undefeated teams in college basketball and hosting the defending NCAA tournament champions -- one of those other teams without a loss -- in a pivotal Big East conference game.

That's the dream scenario Creighton coach Greg McDermott and the 13-0 Bluejays -- ranked No. 10th nationally -- find themselves in Saturday when top-ranked Villanova, also 13-0, rolls into CenturyLink Center for a showdown that will trim the list of undefeated teams to four.

"It's going to be incredible," McDermott said. "If I'd have told you five years ago, we're going to play the No. 1 team in the country, we're going to be ranked (10th), we're going to be in the Big East, you'd have told me I was crazy, right?

"It's really cool. I guess it validates all the resources we've poured into our program. Is it as big a game as playing Wichita State for a conference championship? I don't know about that. That was pretty cool as well."

This is Creighton's fourth season as members of the country's strongest non-Power Five basketball conference. Both teams started conference play the right way Wednesday -- Creighton pulling away from Seton Hall 89-75 and the Wildcats surviving with a 68-65 win at DePaul.

Villanova brings a 19-game winning streak to Omaha that began last March with its six-game run to the NCAA title. Many of the key players from that championship team are still on the Wildcats' roster.

Josh Hart is a front-runner for National Player of the Year honors. The senior wing averages 20.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game while also shooting 55.8 percent.

Kris Jenkins, whose buzzer-beating 3-pointer provided the winning points in the NCAA title game, is averaging 12.8 points and leads Villanova with 35 3-pointers through 13 games. Two more Wildcats -- Jalen Brunson (12.8) and Mikal Bridges (10.5) -- are averaging double-figure point totals this season.

"Creighton has one of the great atmospheres in college basketball," Villanova coach Jay Wright said. "It also has one of the best teams in college basketball."

Brunson noted the close call at DePaul and also understands that is life in the Big East.

"Every team is good. Obviously, we have a target on our back because of last year," Brunson said. "As a team, we're just going to have to get better every day -- listen to our coach, listen to our seniors, and really keep grinding and getting better."

McDermott said the strong showing by the 7-7 Blue Demons wasn't a surprise because teams in Villanova's position usually get a determined effort from every opponent, no matter their record.

"Everybody's giving them their best shot," McDermott said. "They got DePaul's best shot. DePaul hadn't been playing well prior to that game."

The Wildcats getting a scare like that prior to arriving in Omaha isn't necessarily an ideal scenario for Creighton's cause.

"That might be the worst thing that happened to us, that DePaul gave them a scare," McDermott said. "I'm sure coach Wright will have his team's attention."

Two of the four Bluejays who are leading an offense that is averaging 89.8 points per game -- guards Maurice Watson and Khyri Thomas -- said this kind of game and anticipated atmosphere are what makes the game special for them. Especially for Watson, who is a Philadelphia native.

"This is what you dream for, play against the No. 1 team in your house in front of your fans," Watson said. "To come out and really, really start your Big East play and solidify some of the things we've done in non-conference against a national champion.

"(With) just a couple of days of preparation we've got to be really focused and locked in. At the end of the day you're playing against the No. 1 team in the country in a New Year's Eve showdown at home."

The senior from Philadelphia said it will be important for the Bluejays to have a focused effort Saturday like the one they had Wednesday against the 10-3 Pirates.

That includes cutting down on turnovers and playing strong defense; Watson gave up the ball just twice after committing 10 turnovers in a Dec. 20 victory over Arizona State.

"As I look I see it's even on the line of turnovers and usually my number is higher than everyone else's," Watson said. "To keep it consistent I think I did a really good job of spreading the ball around. That's really how I judge my games."

A line like the one he had against the Pirates -- 21 points, 10 rebounds, five assists and just two turnovers in 38 minutes -- is one Watson gladly would take against Villanova.

That will be especially important because of Villanova's stingy defense. The Wildcats have held opponents to just 61.5 points per game while averaging 79.8 themselves.

Those numbers won't matter to Thomas once the ball goes in the air just after noon on Saturday.

"We lost to the twice last year so it should be real fun," Thomas said. "A good fight for both teams. I'm sure we're ready; I'm ready."

One impressive quality about Villanova is that the title-winning team is highly adept at handling pressure.

"We're not easily rattled. We're very tough-minded," Hart said. "It's been that way for the past couple of years. We know the position that we are in. We like that position. We'd rather have it that way than the other way around. We've got to keep getting better, and that starts with us, the three seniors. We've got to go back to work tomorrow and get better."

Preview: Fighting Irish (11-2) at Panthers (11-2)
Date: December 31, 2016 2:00 PM EDT

PITTSBURGH -- Both struggled through average nights earlier this month during a non-league loss to No. 15 Purdue, but both have been around the college basketball block to know this: For seniors, for captains, average nights simply are not allowed come conference play.

V.J. Beachem and Steve Vasturia and No. 24 Notre Dame (11-2) open Atlantic Coast Conference play Saturday afternoon with a visit to Pittsburgh (11-2).

"This is when the real stuff starts," said Vasturia, who will make consecutive start No. 95 at the Petersen Events Center. "This is where we've got to lock in. We know what the ACC schedule is like."

Beachem and Vasturia have seen each end of the conference spectrum. Outside of Virginia (29-7) and Duke (26-10), no ACC program has enjoyed as much success the previous two conference seasons than Notre Dame (25-11). But prior to that magical run (32-6, 14-4 ACC) through 2014-15, Beachem and Vasturia were frazzled freshmen tossed into a near-impossible situation on a Fighting Irish team that staggered to a 6-12 showing its first run through ACC play in 2013-14.

Beachem laughed at the memory of trying to compete that year with the league's elite without any reference point or compass or idea. He was a scrawny kid then; he's now a seasoned senior.

"We've been through a lot of ups and downs," he said. "It's taught us a lot. Now we've got to share that knowledge and get these guys ready."

Both Notre Dame seniors approach their final ACC runs in an all-business, confident manner. What happened last week won't matter. Neither will what might happen next week. All that does is the here and now. Stay in today and don't get caught pondering the yesterdays and tomorrows.

"You take it day by day and game by game, cherish every practice and every game and only worry about the moment," Beachem said. "You try to get one win, then move on to the next one.

"You don't look back or forward."

Pittsburgh enters league play with two players -- Jamel Artis (20.8) and Michael Young (22.8) -- scoring at a high clip. Though Panthers coach Kevin Stallings is new to the league, Irish coach Mike Brey knows him well. Their paths occasionally crossed the previous 17 seasons when Stallings was at Vanderbilt.

"He's an offensive guy," Brey said. "He's really had Artis and Young exploding offensively. They can really score it. Our defense will really be challenged.

"Those dudes are men."

Notre Dame starts league play on the road for a second consecutive season. The Fighting Irish never really had a chance last January, opening at perennial league power Virginia. But the way Notre Dame played earlier this month in a "neutral site" loss to top-ranked Villanova gives the Irish and their head coach confidence heading into their first true road game.

"There will be another level of edge there," Brey said. "We've played well in those atmospheres."

Now it's time to play well in the ACC, something that won't be very easy in a league touted as the most difficult in the country.

"This is going to be the hardest thing we ever did with the depth of this league, but I like the group that we have doing it," Brey said. "It would be a heck of a New Year's Eve if we were on a one-game (league) win streak."

Preview: Seminoles (13-1) at Cavaliers (11-1)
Date: December 31, 2016 2:00 PM EDT

After notching its eighth-straight win in ACC openers under coach Tony Bennett in a 61-52 road win over No. 6 Louisville on Wednesday night, No. 12 Virginia returns home to face another ranked opponent in No. 20 Florida State on Saturday.

Bennett's thoughts after the win over Louisville:

"Our team is collective," Bennett added. "If that's not a team win -- if how we play isn't a group thing -- then I don't know what is. We're balanced."

The Seminoles also won their conference opener as they knocked off Wake Forest 88-72 on Wednesday night. Coach Leonard Hamilton and his Florida State squad have won 13 of their first 14 games this season and are off to the best 14-game start in school history.

"I think we're growing and maturing a little bit. It's part of the process," Hamilton said. "We realize what we are doing positively, and you don't allow yourself to get too excited when you are doing things well."

Sophomore guard Dwayne Bacon has been the spark on the offensive end so far this season for the Seminoles as he enters Saturday's game averaging just under 18 points per game and has scored in double figures in 23 straight games dating back to last season.

In past years, Hamilton and his Florida State teams have been known for their stellar play on the defensive end. This season, the Seminoles are taking a new approach and currently lead the ACC in field-goal percentage (51.3) while scoring 88.1 points per game which is good for 13th in the country. Including Bacon, two other Florida State players average in double figures and the Seminoles have four other players averaging at least seven points per game.

Despite their hot start this season offensively, Saturday will be Florida State's toughest test of the season when it faces Virginia's vaunted defense in the hostile environment at John Paul Jones Arena. The Cavaliers are 35-1 at home in ACC games the past four seasons.

Florida State knocked off the 13th-ranked Cavaliers in Tallahassee last season after losing its previous five to Virginia.

The Cavaliers continue to take a balanced approach to their offense, something Bennett knows they need to continue to do. Virginia currently is without a double-figure scorer on their roster as guard London Perrantes leads the team averaging 9.9 points per game. Seven other Cavaliers average at least six points per game as Virginia spreads the wealth on offense, but continues to get it done on the defensive end of the ball.

Virginia leads the conference in field-goal shooting percentage defense as it allows their opponents to shoot just 34.7 percent. The Seminoles will need to rely on their backcourt of Bacon and Xavier Rathan-Mayes, who each went for 23 points in their win over Wake Forest. If Florida State gets good production from their backcourt, they could pull Virginia out of their comfort zone defensively -- something that happened in the Cavaliers' only loss this season to West Virginia.

Preview: Bulldogs (13-0) at Tigers (6-8)
Date: December 31, 2016 8:00 PM EDT

Gonzaga is treating the newly devised West Coast Conference schedule as a precursor to the kind of slate its players will face in the NBA or other pro leagues.

The seventh-ranked Bulldogs (13-0 overall, 1-0 WCC) will travel to play Pacific (6-8, 0-1) on Saturday after hosting Pepperdine two nights earlier because the WCC condensed the 18-game schedule into nine weeks instead of the 10 in previous years.

That results in numerous split weeks without having the traditional travel partners. This is the first of five times that Gonzaga will play split weeks with one home game and one away.

"All these guys want to be pros, this is a pro schedule," Gonzaga coach Mark Few said after the Bulldogs defeated Pepperdine 92-62. "Let's act like it then. You have to take great care of your bodies, get rest and plenty of liquids."

Gonzaga guard Josh Perkins echoed Few's comments by saying, "Hey, my goal is to play in the NBA, so this kind of travel schedule will prepare all of us well."

The game at Pacific, coached by first-year coach Damon Stoudamire, is the Bulldogs' first true road contest. The Bulldogs are 5-0 on neutral courts.

Pacific (6-8) is coming off an 80-76 home loss to Portland. The Tigers were without guard David Taylor (ankle), forwards Ilias Theodorou (foot) and Tonko Vuko (ankle). Center Sami Eleraky was also out with an undisclosed injury.

The status of all four of the players is uncertain for Saturday's game.

"(Pacific) played us physical last year," Few said. "They have a lot of seniors, upperclassmen, that alone makes for a tough encounter. Then you hang a big ranking on your back, we have to be better than we were (against Pepperdine)."

Stoudamire, who shares a friendship with Few, is familiar scouting Gonzaga from his previous assistant coaching positions at Memphis and Arizona. Stoudamire commented that he knows Gonzaga's execution on offense revolves around 7-foot-1 center Przemek Karnowski, who either scores regularly off interior feeds or finds teammates with his deft passing ability for a big man.

Karnowski, who averages 12.2 points a game, ranks third on the team with 23 assists. He also shoots 55.3 percent from the field and averages a team-high 6.4 rebounds a game.

Pacific counters with 6-6 forward Anthony Townes as its most success performer inside the paint. He leads the Tigers with 7.2 rebounds a game and shoots 60.3 percent from the field.

"They're a meat-and-potatoes team," Stoudamire said. "They're coming inside out, and it's been like that since (Few) had the job and before he had the job."

Stoudamire hopes senior guard T.J. Wallace can match the 19 points he had against Gonzaga last season at home. Wallace, who has averaged 10.0 points in three career games against the Bulldogs.

Wallace averages 13.3 points a game, second behind forward Ray Bowles' 14.2

Preview: Toreros (7-6) at Gaels (11-1)
Date: December 31, 2016 9:00 PM EDT

San Diego coach Lamont Smith will be familiar with the surroundings when his team visits 19th-ranked Saint Mary's at the 3,500-seat McKeon Pavilion on Saturday night in Moraga, Calif.

Smith served on the Saint Mary's staff under coach Randy Bennett for six years (2001-2007), and they know each other well. Smith is even trying to match what Bennett did at Saint Mary's.

Smith has said in the past that he'd "be a fool not to duplicate" some of Bennett's methods in building the Gaels into a national power. The similar approach may be why both coaches were upset by the fundamental mistakes made by their teams in their West Coast Conference openers on Thursday.

There was a major difference, though, because Saint Mary's (11-1) won its game 72-60 over Loyola Marymount, while San Diego (7-6) was beaten by San Francisco 80-74, ending the Toreros' five-game winning streak.

The Toreros turned the ball over 10 times in the first half, when they fell behind 51-28.

"I don't think there's any excuse for that poor performance in the first half, other than us not being ready to play and a lot of that falls on me," Smith told the San Diego Union-Tribune. "I challenged them to set the tone, and they didn't set the tone. That goes on me. I've got to have them more ready to play to start the game."

San Diego committed just two turnovers in the second half and got to within four points with 54 seconds left, but could not overcome its big deficit.

Brett Bailey, who leads the team in scoring at 18.5 points per game, had 11 of his 18 points in the second half, while Olin Carter III, the Toreros' second-leading scorer at 17.8 per game, had 16 of his 19 points after intermission. But they combined for five first-half turnovers.

Saint Mary's also committed 10 first-half turnovers in its game and finished with a season-high. That is a habit Bennett wants to break.

"We played well in some areas, but we have to do a better job taking care of the ball," Bennett said. "We had a season high in turnovers, so we got to take of the ball better in conference play."

That has been a common refrain for Bennett recently.

"I don't know what the deal is but we've been turning the ball over more than last year and more than we usually do," Bennett said.

The Gaels returned all five starters from last season's team, which averaged just 9.6 turnovers, fifth in the nation.

They started out well this season, averaging 8.3 turnovers over their first four games. But they committed at least 13 turnovers in five of their past six games, topped off by Thursday's total.

The miscues and poor free-throw shooting nearly cost Saint Mary's, which led Loyola Marymount by just a point midway through the second half.

All five Gaels starters were shooting 75 percent or better from the free-throw line before the start of Thursday's game, but Saint Mary's was just 7 of 16 from the line midway through the second half against the Lions.

The Gaels shot free throws better down the stretch, which helped them pull away.

"Our toughness pulled us through tonight," said Saint Mary's center Jock Landale, who had 13 of his 18 points in the second half.

The 6-foot-11 Landale leads the team in both scoring (17.9 points per game) and rebounding (9.7), while Emmett Naar had a season-high 19 points Thursday and improved his scoring average to 10.2 points for the season.

Don't expect Bennett to take it easy on his former assistant. Last season, in Smith's first year at San Diego, Saint Mary's blasted the Toreros 79-46 at home and handled the Toreros 60-43 when the teams met in San Diego.

Saint Mary's has won five consecutive games against San Diego and 10 of the last 11 meetings.

Armadillo's Write-Up

Saturday, December 31

Xavier won four of last five games with Georgetown, winning 66-53/88-70 in last two visits here; Musketeers are 11-2 vs schedule #49 but lost both their true road games, by 15 at Baylor, by a hoop at Colorado. Xavier won last four games, is 5-2 vs top 100 teams, with best win by 6 over Clemson on a neutral floor. Georgetown is 8-5 vs schedule #60; they’re 3-4 vs top 100 teams, and lost at home to Maryland/Arkansas State. Hoyas turn ball over 20.1% of time, aren’t great on defensive boards (#322).
