Nice 3-1 night last night improving my NHL record.
Some insight from covers article on canucks lone pick up at the trade deadline.
The Canucks hope Alberts, a stay-at-home physical defenceman, will at least partially plug the rather large hole left by the injury to Willie Mitchell, who is out indefinitely with a concussion suffered on Jan. 16.
"I am just a physical presence on the ice, a defensive defenceman," Alberts said. "I am not going to put up a whole lot of points, so I hope they aren't expecting that. I just want to play solid D, make a good first pass out of the zone and keep things simple."
Alberts was averaging 15 minutes a night in Carolina and was a plus player (plus 7) on a team that doesn't have many. He ranks fourth among NHL defencemen with 178 hits this season.
"That's most of my game right there, be physical, make forwards think twice about coming down," he said. "Any time you can lay a big hit on somebody it's always a fun thing to do."
Alberts was planning to use Thursday, a day off for the Canucks, to get acquainted with his new teammates. They are not all complete strangers.
He and Canuck backup goalie Andrew Raycroft were teammates in Boston in the 2005-06 season and the Minnesota native played in the 2006 world championships in Latvia for the United States alongside Ryan Kesler.
"He's actually a very good player, he hits hard and he plays tough every night and that is what we need," Kesler said of Alberts.
Clearly a depth move but I heard a report about Willie Mitchell during the all star break and I don't think he will be back this year. Which is a shame he is a good locker room guy - team mate and shut down defenceman, Willie is also in contract year.
