2 questions:
Why is he 100% sure? I've seen no proof of anything. I view it as very likely he was going to be stiffed himself but that is not 100%
Why did he continue to bet even after he suspected he wasn't going to get paid? Because he was trying to get back to even, ie, taking a shot when he had no intention of settling up if he lost anyways.
This is simple, you make a bet, be it with an angel or the devil, you lose, you pay the bet. There are no excuses.
