SOUTHWEST ASIA, May 28, 2017 — U.S. and coalition military forces continued to attack the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria yesterday, Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve officials reported today.
Officials reported details of yesterday’s strikes, noting that assessments of results are based on initial reports.
Strikes in Syria
Coalition military forces conducted 17 strikes consisting of 23 engagements against ISIS targets in Syria.
-- Near Dayr Az Zawr, two strikes destroyed four ISIS well heads.
-- Near Raqqa, 15 strikes engaged eight ISIS tactical units and destroyed six fighting positions, three ISIS headquarters, an ISIS staging area and a vehicle bomb.
Strikes in Iraq
Coalition military forces conducted eight strikes consisting of 46 engagements against ISIS targets in Iraq, coordinated with and in support of the Iraqi government:
-- Near Qaim, a strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed an ISIS vehicle.
-- Near Rutbah, a strike destroyed a vehicle bomb.
-- Near Mosul, six strikes engaged five ISIS tactical units, damaged an ISIS staging area, suppressed two ISIS tactical units and two mortar teams, and destroyed 17 fighting positions, six heavy machine guns, four rocket-propelled grenade systems, three mortar systems, three vehicle bombs, a vehicle, and a medium machine gun.

Additionally, two strikes were conducted in Syria and Iraq on May 26 that closed within the last 24 hours.
-- Near Dayr Az Zawr, Syria, a strike destroyed 10 ISIS oil separators and an ISIS well head.
-- Near Mosul, Iraq, a strike engaged two ISIS tactical units and destroyed two medium machine guns.
Part of Operation Inherent Resolve
These strikes were conducted as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the operation to eliminate the ISIS terrorist group and the threat it poses to Iraq, Syria, the region and the wider international community. The destruction of targets in Syria and Iraq further limits ISIS' ability to project terror and conduct operations, officials said.
The list above contains all strikes conducted by fighter, attack, bomber, rotary-wing or remotely piloted aircraft; rocket-propelled artillery; and some ground-based tactical artillery when fired on planned targets, officials noted.
Ground-based artillery fired in counterfire or in fire support to maneuver roles is not classified as a strike, they added. A strike, as defined by the coalition, refers to one or more kinetic engagements that occur in roughly the same geographic location to produce a single or cumulative effect. For example, task force officials explained, a single aircraft delivering a single weapon against a lone ISIS vehicle is a strike, but so is multiple aircraft delivering dozens of weapons against a group of ISIS-held buildings and weapon systems in a compound, having the cumulative effect of making that facility harder or impossible to use. Strike assessments are based on initial reports and may be refined, officials said.
The task force does not report the number or type of aircraft employed in a strike, the number of munitions dropped in each strike, or the number of individual munition impact points against a target.

-- Near Dayr Az Zawr, nine strikes destroyed five ISIS oil trucks, four fuel separator tanks, two ISIS wellheads and an ISIS oil well.
-- Near Raqqa, 24 strikes engaged 18 ISIS tactical units; destroyed 19 boats, 12 fighting positions, eight vehicles, a house bomb and a weapons storage facility; and suppressed an ISIS tactical unit.
Strikes in Iraq
In Iraq, coalition military forces conducted five strikes consisting of 15 engagements against ISIS targets:
-- Near Huwayjah, a strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit.
-- Near Mosul, three strikes engaged two ISIS tactical units and destroyed four fighting positions, a vehicle, a supply cache, a medium machine gun and an unmanned aerial vehicle.
-- Near Tal Afar, a strike destroyed an unmanned aerial vehicle.
June 4 Strikes
Additionally, five strikes were conducted in Syria and Iraq on June 3 that closed within the last 24 hours.
-- Near Raqqa, Syria, five strikes engaged four ISIS tactical units and destroyed 49 boats, five fighting positions, three anti-air artillery systems, two tactical vehicles and two ISIS staging areas.
-- Near Kisik, Iraq, a strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit, destroyed two fighting positions and a weapons cache, damaged 10 ISIS supply routes and suppressed a mortar team.
Part of Operation Inherent Resolve
These strikes were conducted as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the operation to destroy ISIS in Iraq and Syria. The destruction of ISIS targets in Iraq and Syria also further limits the group's ability to project terror and conduct external operations throughout the region and the rest of the world, task force officials said.
For example, task force officials explained, a single aircraft delivering a single weapon against a lone ISIS vehicle is one strike, but so is multiple aircraft delivering dozens of weapons against a group of ISIS-held buildings and weapon systems in a compound, having the cumulative effect of making that facility harder or impossible to use. Strike assessments are based on initial reports and may be refined, officials said.
The task force does not report the number or type of aircraft employed in a strike, the number of munitions dropped in each strike, or the number of individual munition impact points against a target.

[h=1]SDF Begins Raqqa Offensive, Progress Continues in Mosul[/h]From a Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve News Release

SOUTHWEST ASIA, June 6, 2017 — The Syrian Democratic Forces and their Syrian Arab Coalition partners launched the offensive to unseat the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria from its so-called "capital" of Raqqa in northern Syria today.
The SAC and SDF began marching on Raqqa in November and have been rapidly tightening the noose around the city since their air assault behind enemy lines in coalition aircraft in March to begin the seizure of Tabqah.
The multi-ethnic SDF is the coalition’s local ground force partner in the fight against ISIS in northern Syria and they have proven themselves in Manbij, Tabqah and countless other towns and villages across northwest Syria over the past two years.
Decisive Blow
Army Lt. Gen. Steve Townsend, the commander of Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve, said the fight for Raqqa will be long and difficult, but the offensive would deliver a decisive blow to the idea of ISIS as a physical caliphate saying, "It’s hard to convince new recruits that ISIS is a winning cause when they just lost their twin 'capitals' in both Iraq and Syria," he said.

"We all saw the heinous attack in Manchester, England," Townsend said. "ISIS threatens all of our nations, not just Iraq and Syria, but in our own homelands as well. This cannot stand."
Coalition forces will continue to support the SAC and SDF during their Raqqa offensive as part of their ‘advise and assist’ mission, providing equipment, training, intelligence and logistics support, precision fires and battlefield advice.
The SDF have encouraged civilians to depart Raqqa so that they do not become trapped, used as human shields or targets for ISIS snipers. Once Raqqa is liberated, SDF officials said it will be turned over to a representative body of local civilians who will provide security and governance.
Mosul
In Iraq, Iraqi forces continue to make steady gains in brutal, close-quarters urban combat against ISIS on the west side of Mosul.
"The international coalition and our partner forces are steadily dismantling the physical caliphate of ISIS," Townsend said. "Once ISIS is defeated in both Mosul and Raqqa, there will still be a lot of hard fighting ahead, but this coalition is strong and committed to the complete annihilation of ISIS in both Iraq and Syria."

 • Taliban claimed responsibility claiming a fighter had joined ranks
Three US army rangers have been killed by an Afghan army solider who opened fire on them in eastern Afghanistan, an Afghan official said.
Afghan officials initially reported that two soldiers had been killed and two wounded but US officials later upgraded the death

Attahullah Khogyani, spokesman for the provincial governor in Nangarhar province, said the Afghan soldier was killed after the attack.
The Taliban claimed responsibility, with spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid saying one of their fighters had joined the Afghan army.

Such insider attacks have happened before in Afghanistan.
In March, another Afghan soldier was killed after he opened fire on foreign forces at a base in Helmand province, wounding three U.S. soldiers.
There are currently 8,400 American troops in Afghanistan training, advising and assisting the Afghanistan army. Around 2,000 of them are involved in counterterrorism operations.

WASHINGTON, June 11, 2017 — U.S. forces conducted a strike operation against al-Shabab in Somalia today, approximately 185 miles southwest of Mogadishu, according to a statement issued by chief Pentagon spokesperson Dana W. White.
The United States conducted this operation in coordination with its regional partners as a direct response to al-Shabab actions, including recent attacks on Somali forces, the Pentagon spokesperson said.
This strike was conducted with the authorities approved by the president in March, which allows the Defense Department to conduct legal action against al-Shabab within a geographically-defined area of active hostilities in support of partner forces in Somalia, White said in the statement.
"We remain committed to working with our Somali partners and allies to systematically dismantle al-Shabab, and help achieve stability and security throughout the region," White said.

Ground-based artillery fired in counterfire or in fire support to maneuver roles is not classified as a strike, they added. A strike, as defined by the coalition, refers to one or more kinetic engagements that occur in roughly the same geographic location to produce a single or cumulative effect.
