SOUTHWEST ASIA, May 13, 2017 — U.S. and coalition military forces continued to attack the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria yesterday, conducting 22 strikes consisting of 80 engagements, Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve officials reported today.
Officials reported details of yesterday’s strikes, noting that assessments of results are based on initial reports.
Strikes in Syria
In Syria, coalition military forces conducted 15 strikes consisting of 19 engagements against ISIS targets:
-- Near Abu Kamal, a strike destroyed an ISIS wellhead.
-- Near Hawl, a strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed a vehicle and a vehicle bomb.
-- Near Dayr Az Zawr, six strikes engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed 16 ISIS oil tankers, two pieces of ISIS oil processing equipment, two fighting positions and a vehicle.
-- Near Raqqa, five strikes engaged two ISIS tactical units and destroyed two fighting positions, a front-end loader, an ISIS crane, and a house-born improvised explosive device.
-- Near Tabqah, two strikes engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed a tactical vehicle and a vehicle.
Strikes in Iraq
In Iraq, coalition military forces conducted seven strikes consisting of 61 engagements against ISIS targets:
-- Near Mosul, six strikes engaged three ISIS tactical units; destroyed six fighting positions, five mortar systems, a tactical vehicle, a house-borne improvised explosive device, a recoilless rifle, a medium machine gun, a command-and-control node, a weapons cache; damaged 27 ISIS supply routes and a fighting position; and suppressed eight mortar teams an artillery system.
-- Near Tal Afar, a strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed a tactical vehicle and a weapons cache.
Additionally, six strikes were conducted in Syria on May 11 that closed within the last 24 hours:
-- Near Hawl, a strike engaged an ISIS tactical unit and destroyed three fighting positions.
-- Near Raqqa, five strikes engaged an ISIS tactical unit; destroyed two vehicle bombs, a fighting position, a weapons cache, a vehicle; and damaged two ISIS supply routes and a bridge.
Part of Operation Inherent Resolve
These strikes were conducted as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, the operation to destroy ISIS in Iraq and Syria. The destruction of ISIS targets in Iraq and Syria also further limits the group's ability to project terror and conduct external operations throughout the region and the rest of the world, task force officials said.
The list above contains all strikes conducted by fighter, attack, bomber, rotary-wing or remotely piloted aircraft; rocket-propelled artillery; and some ground-based tactical artillery when fired on planned targets, officials noted.
Ground-based artillery fired in counterfire or in fire support to maneuver roles is not classified as a strike, they added. A strike, as defined by the coalition, refers to one or more kinetic engagements that occur in roughly the same geographic location to produce a single or cumulative effect. For example, task force officials explained, a single aircraft delivering a single weapon against a lone ISIS vehicle is one strike, but so is multiple aircraft delivering dozens of weapons against a group of ISIS-held buildings and weapon systems in a compound, having the cumulative effect of making that facility harder or impossible to use. Strike assessments are based on initial reports and may be refined, officials said.
The task force does not report the number or type of aircraft employed in a strike, the number of munitions dropped in each strike, or the number of individual munition impact points against a target.

[h=1]Syria's Tabqa City Liberated, Key Development for Raqqa[/h]By Lisa FerdinandoDoD News, Defense Media Activity

WASHINGTON, May 12, 2017 — Partnered forces in Syria have liberated the Syrian city of Tabqa, a key development in the eventual defeat of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria in Raqqa, Syria, the Pentagon's director of press operations said today.

The Syrian Democratic Forces and Syrian Arab Coalition liberated Tabqa, which is southwest of Raqqa, Syria, as well as the Tabqa Dam and a nearby airfield May 10, Navy Capt. Jeff Davis told reporters today at the Pentagon.
"The multi-ethnic SDF forced the surrender of Tabqa Dam and the remainder of Tabqa city, continuing the trend of ISIS's diminished control of territory and people," Davis said.
Putting Pressure on ISIS
The SDF's increased pressure on ISIS from each flank allowed the partnered forces to accelerate the pace of the fight, clear the final neighborhoods of Tabqa and isolate the dam, he said.
"The SDF now has further isolated ISIS in Raqqa, which is the group's stronghold, and will continue to pursue the military defeat of ISIS throughout Syria," he said.
About 70 ISIS fighters conceded to SDF terms for Tabqa, which included dismantling improvised explosive devices around the dam, surrendering all heavy weapons and forcing the withdraw of all remaining fighters from the city, according to Davis.
"The SDF accepted ISIS's surrender of the city to protect innocent civilians and to protect the Tabqa Dam infrastructure, which hundreds of thousands of Syrians rely on for water, agriculture and electricity," he said.
Davis added, "The coalition tracked fleeing fighters and targeted those that could be safely hit without harming civilians."
Isolating Raqqa
Raqqa is nearly isolated, Davis said, noting the bridges that cross the Euphrates River have been disabled. An ISIS-controlled dam farther up river is essentially the terrorists' only way across the river, he explained.
"They are now pinched from the north, the east and the west otherwise, as well as just [from] the natural geography of the river," he said.
Coalition strikes in Syria continue, he said, noting strikes yesterday around Abu Kamal, Raqqa and Tabqa.

[h=1]RAF drone strike disrupted public killing staged by Isis, says MoD[/h]

Isis sentry killed by missile in Abu Kamal, eastern Syria, after RAF realised that crowd were gathering for killing of two prisoners

An RAF drone strike disrupted a public killing being staged by Islamic State in Syria last week, according to the Ministry of Defence.

A sentry from Isis was killed by a Hellfire missile fired from a Reaper drone, the MoD said.

The MoD issues regular updates of airstrikes against Isis targets in Syria and Iraq but this incident stands out from the routine list of snipers, trucks and other targets, not least in offering up details.

An RAF crew monitoring events on the ground at Abu Kamal, in eastern Syria, homed in on a large crowd gathering in one of the town’s main streets on Tuesday 9 May.

A statement by the MoD, which refers to Isis as Daesh, said: “When a van then unloaded two shackled prisoners in front of the crowd, it became clear that Daesh were organising a public execution. Given the large number of civilians present, the Reaper’s crew could not target directly the Daesh fighters about to carry out the murders.

“However, two armed extremists were stationed as sentries on the roof of a building overlooking the scene. A Hellfire missile was fired immediately, and scored a direct hit which not only killed one of the sentries but also brought the execution to an immediate halt, as the Daesh fighters fled the scene, and the crowd of civilians dispersed.”

[h=1]U.S. strikes Syria militia threatening U.S.-backed forces: U.S. official[/h]

The U.S. military carried out an air strike on Thursday against militia supported by the Syrian government who had moved against U.S.-backed fighters in the country's south, a U.S. official told Reuters on Thursday.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the strikes took place near the town of At Tanf and followed warning shots by U.S. aircraft meant to dissuade the fighters.

[h=1]U.S. aircraft conduct strike on Syrian army convoy[/h]

BEIRUT -- The U.S. sent aircraft to strike Syrian regime vehicles on Thursday that violated a deconfliction zone set up around al-Tanf, an army base where special forces are training Syrian militias, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports.

The Syrian regime has violated the zone two times in the past few days, Martin reports.

In one incident, 27 regime vehicles drove within 18 miles of al-Tanf, which breached the 34 mile radius of the army convoy. U.S. aircraft attempted to buzz the regime, but when the convoy didn't turn around, they conducted a strike against some of the vehicles.

In the second incident, an unarmed Syrian SU-22 fighter-bomber entered the deconfliction zone and was intercepted by a pair of F-22 fighter aircraft.
It remains unclear as to why the Syrians violated the zone. Martin reports that Syrian forces are pushing eastward towards the Euphrates River Valley, which hints to the idea that the regime may have been doing reconnaissance on their flank.

The base was attacked by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in April. Last summer, Syrian fighters trained by the U.S. who operated out of al-Tanf were bombed by Russian jets.

Strikes in Iraq
In Iraq, coalition military forces conducted four strikes consisting of 56 engagements against ISIS targets near Mosul, engaging an ISIS tactical unit; destroying 23 fighting positions, 19 medium machine guns, eight rocket-propelled-grenade systems, five mortar systems, three heavy machine guns, two vehicle-borne bombs, two supply cache, and a vehicle; and damaging three fighting positions and three ISIS supply routes.

[h=2]'Love from Manchester': RAF crew write WW2-style message on side of Hellfire missile on its way to blast ISIS targets in Syria[/h]
40CAAE9E00000578-0-image-a-9_1495736913100.jpg
RAF crew scrawled a message on a missile on its way to blast ISIS targets in Syria that read 'Love from Manchester.' The defiant note was initially believed to be a social media hoax but RAF bosses confirmed its veracity later today. It is understood it was the brainchild of a drone squadron based at a secret location in the Middle East, in response to Monday night's terror attack at Manchester Arena that claimed 22 innocent victims. The picture appeared on Twitter with the caption: 'RAF Armourer on a Reaper UAV squadron wrote this on a Hellfire missile before taking off on a Syria mission'. An RAF spokesman told MailOnline: 'The RAF can confirm the photo was genuine'. The missile was later confirmed to be a Paveway bomb. It follows a long tradition of airmen scrawling messages on bombs since World War Two (bottom right), with insults and declarations of revenge also written following the September 11 (centre right) and Paris (top right) terror attacks
