Russia leads the way

Group C: HC Mountfield in Ufa to make European hockey history.

By Karl Huber

Like the sun rises from the east, the new era of European hockey begins in the east when Salavat Yulayev Ufa take on HC Mountfield Ceske Budejovice in what will be the historic first game of the Champions Hockey League. Thanks to the four-hour time difference, these two teams will have the honor of opening the CHL season.

The modern Ufa Arena will be the venue for the first big clash in Group C, due to take place on Wednesday, 8th October at 16:00 CEST.

On paper at least, the game seems straight forward, and the parts of the play staged in the capital of the Republic of Bashkortostan capital typecast. Last season Salavat won the Russian title for the first time in club history, in a league ranked as the toughest in the world after the NHL. And in the newly-founded Kontinentalnaya Hokkeynaya Liga (KHL), Sergey Mikhalev’s team are among the favourites to lift the trophy at the end of the season.

So far, however, it has not all been smooth sailing for Salavat. Following a solid start to the season, including a four-game winning streak – among them a 5-1 victory over Jaromir Jagr’s Avantgard Omsk – the men from Ufa have since stumbled.

The lowest point was the shocking 5-3 loss against Neftehimik on home ice. Yet the team has pulled itself back up to go on another run, clocking up five wins on the trot, including a 5-1 win against Metallurg Magnitogorsk – another Champions Hockey League team, and the 2008 Victoria Cup challenger.

Ufa is currently second in the standing in the Bobrov Division of the KHL, behind Atlant Mytishchi.

For HC Mountfield, the season has been rough so far. The team from Ceske Budejovice, two hours south of Prague, is sixth in the Extraliga, after ten games into the season. Five wins and five losses is clearly not enough for last season’s regular season champions.

Veteran goaltender Roman Turek knows what went wrong.

“Our new coach wants to play a more defensive style of hockey. We started the season playing play our hockey, and it didn’t work because the coach wanted a new style. It took a little time to get to the same page,“ he told championshockeyleague.com.

Yet in their last games, the Czechs failed to boost their confidence going into Ufa. With a 2-1 away win against Zlin, a 2-4 loss at home against Mlada Boleslaw and a 2-3 on the road agains Karlovy Vary Mountfield had some rough outcomings.

However the last two games on the road will have worked wonders among the Mountfield players, having won a tight game to seal their second away win and losing the other by only one goal.

“We are playing the first game in Russia, and I think it's good. They’ll be under pressure on home ice - the home fans are expecting a win, and for us it’s perfect to start on the road,” Turek said.

The 1996 World Championships Best Goalie gets ready to steal the show.

Players to watch:

Alexander Perezhogin, Salavat: Simply put, the Salavat Yulayev forward is on fire. In the 2-1 overtime win against Traktor Chelyabinsk, it was the 25-year-old Perezhogin who scored the game winning goal. The Russian also scored in the 5-1 win against Magnitogorsk and he is now Salavat’s leading goal scorer in the KHL, with eight goals.

Oleg Tverdovsky, Salavat: The two-time Stanley Cup winner is the rock the Salavat defense is built on. The 32-year-old is also the most dangerous blueliner in the Russian line-up. With 2 goals and 3 assists in 12 KHL games, Tverdovsky leads Salavat's defensemen in scoring.

Alexander Radulov, Salavat: The 22-year old speedy forward is one of the top prospects in Russian hockey. The now-former made headlines in the summer by signing with Salavat, but it doesn't seem to distract him. Radulov has scored 4 goals and 7 assists in 13 KHL games so far, which makes him the leading scorer of Salavat Yulayev.

Ivan Huml, HC Mountfield: The 27-year-old forward is currently the main man in HC Mountfield’s attacking play. In the 10 games already played in the Extraliga, the Czech has scored 6+3=9 points.

Roman Turek, HC Mountfield: The HC Mountfield goalie is the oldest (38) player on the ice at the Ufa Arena. Turek has played well enough so far this season in the Extraliga, but he has not been outstanding by any stretch of the imagination. With a save percentage of 92.54, however, he is clearly the number one keeper in the Czech team.

Milan Toman, HC Mountfield: Keep an eye on Toman and his passing game. The 28-year-old Mountfield defenseman already has notched six assists in the Extraliga. He has also scored once to a give him 7 points in 10 games.

Salavat Yulayev Ufa's last 5 games in the KHL:

25.09.2008: Salavat Yulayev Ufa - Lada Togliatti 2-1 OT
23.09.2008: Salavat Yulayev Ufa - AK Bars Kazan 4-2

Good job for Eisbären but game against Metallurg Magnitogorsk will be a much tougher one so they better beat Kärpät on road too .
Salavat Ulaev won easily 7-1 just as expected and will be a hot fav to win the whole thing IMO .

That's what I thought. I sprinkled a bit on Ufa +275 to win the tournament, prior to the first game last night.

That team is just too strong for the other leagues.

Metallurg Novokuznetsk vs Metallurg Magnitogorsk ( Spread )

My pick is Metallurg Novokuznetsk + 0.5

Odds : - 135 & - 140

Bookmaker : 5dimes & pinnaclesports

3.37 units to win 2.5 units
and 2.8 units to win 2 units

Like the home team in this spot , Magnitogorsk has tough schedule , played 3 games since 4th October , their will have just one day rest after this game today while Novokuznetsk will play their next on 12th .
Home team impressed me against Ak Bars even tho they lost 6-3 but 5 of the 6 goals they received were when Ak Bars was in powerplay and I had a feeling refs clearly favoured the home team against Novokuznetsk with their whistle .
Will take home team to keep it close in regular time with +0.5 handicap .

This is great offer IMO , when I checked Dinamo's schedule I couldnt believe what I saw - this will be just their 3rd home game , so far they have 2 games at home and 11 on road . Last game at home was 22 days ago and I pretty sure today's game will be won in solid fashion against Severstal who play 2nd game in Moscow in a row , 7th they lost to Spartak Moscow 8-2 .

Vitiaz Chehov (24th) vs Barys Astana ( 12th ) ( Moneyline )

My pick is Barys Astana to win

Odds : - 125

Bookmaker : pinnaclesports

6.25 units to win 5 units

On paper looks like a logical play . With a win today Barys can get as high as 7th place in the league which would be a huge archievement for them and I think they can do it against a team like Chehov . Main factor in this game can be powerplay . No problem with schedule at all for Barys in the last days , this will be their 3rd game in 8 days , last one was on 8th but in Moscow and Chehov is Moscow region team so not a big distance to travel . Chehov still on top with penalty minutes : 564 min in 14 games and today we have a team that can punish them for dirty play . Barys is one of the best teams in the league when in powerplay they are 4th with solid 20.9 % converted . Vityaz is last in whole league with only 5.7 % converted powerplays . Also after fading Barys few times I realized that they are a good team and not the one to fade .
