I thought this thread was a joke at first to be honest. But I do have a question. Haven't done much drywalling but I'm doing some right now where there was paneling in my house. I am putting crown up so I am not worried about how it looks at the top. But if I wasn't, how would you finish the top if the ceiling is good and no need to redrywall it?

Are you pretty much forced to tape and mud a couple inches on the ceiling, and then having to attempt to match the texured ceiling? Or is there a way of doing it where you don't have to mess with the ceiling at all?

Yes, becausethere is no way that i am aware of.....

You know, certain types of paneling looks pretty good when painted...won't be the answer to every situation but an off white to cream can look pretty sharp...If that doesn't do it for you, I would leave the paneling in place and screw 1/4" drywall to it, and, i would hire a taper if the job was big..

Finishing walls is an art in itself, i will fix a hole in the wall here and there...but a whole basement of something....I leave that to the pros.

if they sell shirts, i guess i could get them...graduated Shepard High School.1995.

At major home improvement stores they ,to put in laymans terms...a one sticky sided piece of soft plastic/rubber to put under your door to create a better seal between bottom of door and door jam.
Also some door jams have a rubber gasket which can rot out and can be replaced.
As far as the windows go....I am not sure if the air is getting thru from where the windows shut or otherwise....Either way a gap can be minnimized with the above solution, or you can plastic the window with a kit from hardware store.....

First year i was at my home a replaced all my electrical outlets....At this time i bought little gaskets to put behind the coverplates...Checking for airleaks anywhere in your home is easily done with a lighter....If you live in cold climates and you question whether you have enough attic insulation...The answer is no you don't.

Thanks. I will check that out.

I thought that was the case, thanks. I ripped off the panelling and am using 1/4 drywall. There was 1/2" drywall behind it but it was unusable, plus I had to rip out electrical boxes anyway. I'm solid at mudding so I'm not worried about that. I would never hire someone to come in here and do work for me unless it was plumbing. I was just wondering about the ceiling thing.

I come of the same school that you do....my home isn't going to be anybodys payday....I guess i sing a different tune on the mud...but thats just me.

If I WAS gonna mud the shit myself, I surely would use the stuff that you mix yourself. Stuff goes on thin and sands easily...mixes to a yellow color.

Also take some steps to protect your hvac system...If you have multiple returns...blank off those in the room...and/or check filter often...If shit gets past your filter, it will end up in your evaporater coil and then you got BIG problems...

Sence were talking drywall, you guys see those drywall patches they have out now? (HomeDepot) I have used them several times, they work excellent! I know they can be costly, but you make up for it in time saved...Often I can patch a hole with one coat. I run into stress cracks alot on soffits and on walls and these patch plates work like a fucking miracle on stress cracks..

A little tip on stress cracks.. If you have a persistant one on a ceiling (they can be tough) what I do is double cut about a 2x4 piece of drywall out, then I throw a 2x4 up inside the ceiling so it runs across the crack. I then pop a couple screws in threw the ceiling into the 2x4 creating a stud over the crack. The cracks never come back. Obviosly you will have to adjust to your particular cituation.

I agree with what moneytrainsports said about mixing your own mud, dries faster and sands better. I hate the premix garbage.
