Lost the corn crop except for one friggin plant. Don't even know if it will pollinate. Cutworms I think. Three plantings. All lost. Pretty much the same with the melons. I tried a new zucchini plant this year - "Italian zucchini". The plant is sprawling and huge. More than 100 sq feet. At least 50 or 100 big white flowers. But they are not pollinating. No zucchini (yet!).
The tomato plants are healthy. Last year I lost most of the tomato crop to early blight broufght on by nonstop spring / early summer rain. So I'm happy and keeping my fingers crossed that the blight stays away. Some are almost 6' tall. Lots of green tomatoes. But the ones beginning to blush red are getting snatched and half eaten right next to my raised beds. Been trying everything to catch or deter whatever is the culprit animal. Faling thusfar.
Cukes are doing great. Peppers coming slowly. Eggplant flowers about to set. Beans beaning. Pulled about 140 heads of garlic last week. They are great. Have already given away about a third of them. More scheduled to go out over the next couple of weeks.
Herbs are healthy and happy. Little figs are forming. Strawberries have been bumper. But the birds get them before I can. Piss me off because they are sweet and delicious.
I took up all my raspberry plants because they are so friggin' invasive. But I gave several of them to the Brazilian girl who cleans for me. Now she brings me raspberries. Delicious. Birds and chipmunks get the blueberries before I can. Grapes will be coming in early September but the birds love those bastards too. I still get some.
Will be planting chard and radishes where I pulled the garlic.
Think that covers things. Love this time of year. Those fresh veggies make it onto my plate most every day. And I make a lot of other people happy as I give most of the crop away.
You?
having a good season
I netted most everything this year raised beds and hoops with clips...also build another green house this spring.
where we are most everyone has the be in a green house..tomatoes, melons, eggplant, peppers anything that needs heat as we've had maybe one day over 85 this year at the farm..the coast house basically nothing grows it's just to cool.
lettuce, radish basically any brassica or allium does great I just planted my winter cabbage...I direct seed most everything.
We do berries, had great crops of both raspberries and strawberry the blues are half done..we freeze tons of berries for later use.
I've done 3 crops of radish this year.. Do you cold pickle at all? this is something we've been doing for a few years with both red onion and radish, it's made me fall in love with growing both. I eat pickle stuff on almost everything..Pizza/ Tacos, Pickled onion and avocado salads.
Here's a good recipe if you don't cold pickle yet... you have to use within a few weeks
