Thats a damn good question. Puffy was big on giving a 'signing bonus' to the more sought after artists, is the only thing I can think of. I know he really got into a bidding war with Jermaine Dupris over who got to sign 'Shyne' (who is behind bars now)

Biggie won the source amatuer rapper of the month award, which was a big deal at the time. I'm sure that created some buzz.

Ya, I agree. Cant stand Kayne either. Please make him go away. But it was funny when he said "George Bush doesnt care about black people" after being embraced by the right as some kind of relegious rap artist or whatever.

I found a old CD the other day I had burned. I was jamming to some of the oldies on it. Man, it took me back to the good ole times of just riding around and not giving a shit about responsibilites. There were two songs I loved to blast all the time on there. Mr. Biggs, "take that shit to trial" I laugh when I hear some of the lyrics now. "***** ass niggas got this game fucked up" Also, there was a old Petey Pablo song on there, "I", that song used to hit pretty hard, and had some funny ass lines in it. Here is the first verse...
Man holla at ya dog
Petey Petey hey yall hey yall
Carolina bird dog, still got my shirt off
Still reppin' for convicts in Sing-sing to Burgaw
Still rockin' with T-T-Timbaland uh-uh uh-uh
I got a different role, different stroll
Impose, every nigga in here tryin' best to fuck with Petey hoes
I got em by the boat load, dark skin to pink-toes
Li'l bitty to big hoe, nineteen to forty-fo'
I got some 1965 pantyhose
Still in the plastic bag now tell me I ain't a macaroni
Jerome Jerome to Don Corleone
Petey Petey the ***** beater
I suck em, fuck em, send em home
I gets my thug on, weekends
I get me club on, we in
So many hotels boy I ought to buy my own
Petey-ott, Petey swiss, Petey inn, Petey I (Petey I)
MAN WE DID IT AGAIN

You know what I always wondered about Biggie?

Ready to Die was his first album and the first single "Juicy" he is talking about

Super nintendo, sega genesis
When I was dead broke, man I couldnt picture this
50 inch screen, money green leather sofa
Got two rides, a limousine with a chauffeur
Phone bill about two gs flat
No need to worry, my accountant handles that

He has all this before his first single? How?
Juicy wasnt Biggies 1st single. Party and Bullshit on "Whos the Man?" Soundtrack was his 1st single.

Being rappers that are alive...
1) Jay Z
2) Emiem
3) NAS

I dont care about the rest. I cant believe you ranked lil wayne higher than Jay Z and NAS..you talked about being a lyricists..did you listen to wayne..his shit is patheic. Maybe, I'm a bit old school but the new rappers aint got shit on the old. Rapper back then was about rhyming, telling stories with beats not just beats. I cant rap for shit and if I have lil john produce a beat for me I can make millions.Half the fucken rap songs now make no sense. Fucken one liners all day.

Man, I love Jay-Z. I was always the only lil' dude jammin that Jigga. My friend used to crack jokes, sayin that I was the only person listenin to Jay, while they were all listenin to that Swishahouse and DJ Michael Watts*

I got mad respect for him and his ability to rhyme, he is smooth and smart with it. He has said a lot of shit that got me thinking, I like him. I just feel like since the Black Album, he has failed to really maintain his street side. I liked the grit he brought to the microphone, I liked hearing about experiences straight from Marcy Projects....now we are showin' him what we got (purdy lady).

NaS...genius, and I really think that he is one of the best east coasters ever (I had him ranked higher than Jay, but not really by much..I'd say even really) God's son, is an all time favorite of mine and I am actually jamming it right now as we speak (This post has taken me at least 30 minutes to write, I keep stoppping and listening to some jams....) I think he is good. I think he is great, I love his smooth delivery as well and ability to rhyme all things. He has brought us into his studio and allowed us a look into his life, I love that...it's a beautiful thing..

I say Wayne because of his wordplay and dirty southern twang. His information seems alot more appropriate for my area. Though I am only an hour from Houston and the original the great DJ Screw, I am very close to Louisiana and a frequent to New Orleans and Baton Rouge. I understand more clearly the stuff that Wayne says.

I typed this thread in an attempt just to get feedback from everyone. That is why I love rap, cause everyone has a personal favorite that best reflects their lifestyle or hometown. I lived in NYC this summer I checked out Jamaica Queens, Harlem, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Staten Island. I wanted to get a feel for these places so that when I sat down and jammed a Method Man cd, or even re-visited that Get Rich or Die Tryin'. I want to check out Compton and South Central LA and even get a trip into that ATL.

What I'm sayin is that as a self proclaimed hustler, I respect everyone else. Having the unique ability to rhyme and speak your mind is an incredible feeling. I appreciate the fact that I have that ability....even if you don't think you're good, keep doing your thing, you never know who you are going to inspire.....

Keep it crunkned RR....

(Note: *Swishahouse, before they all blew up used to get me so hyped. to roll through jammin that screw, windows down, blunts burnin', 12's hittin in the back...it's just a lifestyle...But the Mike Jones blew up and Paul Wall started doing songs with Hulk Daughter and they just got whack, with the exception of Chamillionaire...and Slim Thug can still kinda do it. That screwed up click is so crunkned too, with Big Moe, Big Pokey, Z-Ro)

Wow I havent seen Def Jef's name in a minute. Red Head Kingpin is kinda underrated maybe because he was in that new jack swing era.

Hey KB have you heard about the book, Other Peoples Property?
Link: http://www.amazon.com/Other-Peoples-Property-History-Hip-Hop/dp/1596912731/sr=8-1/qid=1171336861/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/104-3647177-5646345?ie=UTF8&s=books

I've never heard of it but I'm gonna check it out.
I've been listening to Hip-hop since 83, in Toronto we had a DJ on the local college Radio by the name of Ron Nelson he's pretty much the godfather of Canadian Hip-hop. Ask any of the names to come out of T.O. and they tell you they all listened to the Fantasic Voyage on CKLN 88.1 every Sunday afternoon.

It was the first place I heard The Show and La Di Da Di by Doug E. Fresh and Rikki D or Slick Rick for you new school cats, Too Short, Audio Two and it was college Radio so it was all uncut.

Man, so youre really old school like me. I remember recording tapes back in the day on WBLS and Kiss-FM in NYC with DJ Red Alert and Marley Marl from like 10pm to 2AM every Saturday in the early 80's. Some of the quality of the music was garbage and the originality was lacking (Remember all of those Roxanne songs back to back to back?)

Oh to answer the question. I've always been a Rakim Allah fan followed by KRS-ONE
