Chesbro has the modern day (after 1900) record for wins in a season. For post deadball era (aft 1920), I believe it was Alexander.

The alltime record with an incredible 60 wins in one year was by some ol' drunk named Charles "Old Hoss" Radbourne around 1880. Helped put him over 300 wins and into the Hall.

the hack wilson 190 rbi record was UPPED recently (i am 99%) certain to 191 - but point made

i agree the Vendermeer B2B no-hitters is THE one for me for pretty much the same reasons stated here. to break it you gotta throw THREE no-hitters in a row. this means NO bad hops, texas leaguers, swinging bunts, etc. right!

but the one ACCOMPLISHMENT i would place #1 on the list and of them all - is the ONLY ONE that will NEVER be tied (can't be broken and ou will see why) is in the late 1800s (i believe) they played a game and for the ENTIRE GAME used ONE BASEBALL!

you read that right - ONE BASEBALL for the entire game. today that means a ball hit into the stands has to be thrown back into play. a ball hit into mccovey's cove has to be otssed back into play - and used again depsite the fact it is sopping wet and is a rock. that means a ball scuffed has to be used still.

think about how many baseballs are used in a game today - and then think about what the game would be like if they used ONE baseball.

if they did that - the only play i'd make on the game would be UNDER - for there might be 1 run scored the entire game - if that!

From the obscure records department:

David Wells got his first RBI in his 100th career at-bat on Sunday as the Padres and Wells beat the Mets 11-3.

Will anyone ever get their 1st RBI in their 100th at bat in an 11-3 road win again?

Chrles Radbourn and Pud Galvin are 2 hardly known pitchers from the dead ball era that had unbelievable careers.

Radbourn won 309 games in JUST 11 SEASONS

Galvin won 360 games inJUST 12 FULL SEASONS

Tim Keefe and John Clarkson may have been even better.

But this was all pre 1900. So its hard to really compare.

Assists by an outfielder in a career:

450 Tris Speaker - unbreakable record.

In 1990 Barry Bonds led the National league with 14. 20 assists is considerd a GREAT season for assists by an outfielder. Example Roberto Clemente a great outfielder only had 269 assists in a 18 year career.

Wil,

Tris was arguably the best fielding centerfielder of all time. He covered more ground than most and had an exceptionally accurate arm. He would win the gold glove every year if he played now.

Cobb on the otherhand was a below average outfielder. He had very little range. He would probably play left field or DH now.

BTB - true Speaker is famous for his fielding ability.

I have a record that I know will not be broken:

Minnie Minoso played in 5 decades 40s,50s,60s,70s (3 games) and 80s (2 games). To break the record a player would have to play in 6 decades.

I could come up with old records all day like Sam Crawfords career record of 51 inside the park homers. BTW Cobb is 3rd with 46. Never be broken.

Another that definitely will never be broken:

Tom McCreery hit 3 inside the park home runs in 1897 during one game for Louisville. To break the record a player would have to hit 4 inside the parkers in the same game. I say there is a better chance of Van De Meer's no hitter record going first.

agree with all of that. and also how can anyone even come close to most worthless comments made by an announcer during a season (3,416) and carrer (100,382) held by Tim Mcarver

Rob, I like McCarver mainly because he was one gritty player who played in 4 decades himself and actually played in the Majors when he was only 17. He played 8 games for the Cards in 1959 and ended up playing 6 games for the Phils in 1980, hell of a stretch to be in the show. Also FYI re. McCarver: McCarver's 13 triples in 1966 made him the only catcher (ever) to lead a league in that category, in the 64 series McCarver won Game Five with a three-run homer in the top of the tenth inning to give the Cardinals a 3-2 lead in the Series. He was the Series' leading hitter with a .478 average on 11 hits.

yes. only thing about mccarver is he is a piss poor color commentator who doesnt know what the hell he is talking about. highlights include "now watch this slide. . ." and "becuase ichiro is able to make contact and has great speed so he is a tough out"

winter olympics 1992. "mcdorkster" (as the late, great, jim healy used to call him) hosted the coverage. i worked right around the corner from the set in the broadcast center. a few times we would talk. when we did - he tried to prove to me how much smarter than me he really was (he wasn't - but he thought he was) and really made sure i knew who was the most important person in the conversation between the 2 of us. what an asshole!

right nj sports, vandmeer had back to back no hitters and it would take 3 in a row to break it.. back to back again, would only tie it..

bonds is on pace to break gehrig's record of fewest strikeouts, while hitting 40 or more homers in a season.. the record is 41, i think..

Joe DiMaggio hit 46 homers and struck out only 37 times- if there is such a record I think it would be his!
