i was disgusted last night, but this is how it went after the 2nd break:
I pick up A/9 on the button, it gets folded around, and I raise. The SB shoves instantly. He'd been playing like a wild man and was chip leader at the table, and i called, putting him on something like K/J or that type of range. He turns over pocket 8s. I rivered a straight when a 3 came. A couple hands later I pick up pocket Queens, come in for a raise, and the same guy shoves all in. I call and he turns over pocket deuces. My hand holds up, and 5 minutes out of the break I've quadrupled up and am in a good position. I get into one more head's up match against the same guy (at this point, he's still fuming over the beat with his 8s) and take his last 4,000 chips -- don't remember what the hands were.
So any way, the blinds were 200/400 with a 50 ante, I have roughly 20k in chips (about 7k above average), and the table is playing pretty solid poker now that the fish have gone home. There were a few deep stacks playing tight and the short stacks were folding everything, waiting on a hand.
So anyway, I pick up A/Q in 3rd position, raise 4x the BB, and it gets folded to the BB, who moves all in. He had roughly half the stack as me. I debated, feeling sick about it. I call, not really thinking I should fold in this spot. He turns over pocket 7s (which was the range I put him on)and his hand holds up. There went half my stack. A couple hands later, feeling crippled and desperate, I was all in against the same guy with A/J suited -- he had A/K and knocked me out.
So within 30 minutes after the break, I went from severely short stacked, to chip leader (at the table), to bust. I really don't think I could have done much stealing early on, as I had a crazy man to my left the whole time. Should I have folded A/Q at that moment? I was on a nice high, and losing that hand was a crusher. Maybe I should have avoided playing a big pot for a while, allow myself to get back into the flow of things, but at the same time, it's hard to stay out of it when you see a chance to build your stack -- if that goddamn A/Q could have held up, that would've put me to 30k and I could've started leaning on the short stacks.
anyway, finished somewhere around 6500th place, but feel like i was so close to finishing much deeper.
