3D Avatar becomes No. 2 top-grossing movie of all time, still climbing

Second only to James Cameron's other opus, Titanic, Avatar pulls in $1.1 billion worldwide.

Only five movies have ever broken the $1 billion box-office benchmark. Yet the sci-fi 3D epic "Avatar" smashed through in only three weeks.
Skip to next paragraph <!-- /pod --> <!-- /podBrdr -->
<!-- /podStoryRel --> <!-- Anchor skipper link. Should be placed at the end of the Related Items pod and before the next paragraph --> Just 20 days after its release, James Cameron's new film raked in $1.1 billion worldwide, making it the No. 2 top-grossing film of all time. There's a big gap between second and first place, currently held by Cameron's previous opus "Titanic" at $1.8 billion. But "Avatar" still has several months to sprint ahead.
Curiously, these worldwide numbers hold little correlation to domestic box-office figures. Only one-third of the movie's spoils came from American theaters ($374 million). So, despite its global silver-medal status, "Avatar" is 12th on the US-only list, according to boxofficemojo.com. And, if you account for inflation, "Avatar" dips to 85th. Still, remember that "Avatar" has plenty of time to catch up.
The movie's stellar success concludes what was already a great year for 3D films. Four of the 10 top-grossing movies in 2009 were screened in 3D. The allure of an extra dimension convinced more than a few video-rental fans to open up their wallets for a ticket and pair of polarized glasses – including this blogger. (And, of course, most theaters charge a premium for 3D movies, boosting a film's box-office numbers.)
But will these early profits translate into similar blockbusters on DVD? Despite the best efforts of pitchmen at this week's Consumer Electronic Show in Las Vegas, very few families can play 3D movies at home. Will a flat version of "Avatar" attract the same following? The good news for studios is that "Up," "Monsters Vs. Aliens," and "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" – the 3D movies that cracked 2009's top-grossing list for theaters – also broke into the top ten for DVD sales.
There's little chance that 3D TVs will become mainstream by the time "Avatar" hits store shelves as a disc. But the movie will join the growing list of reasons to scoop up a new television. With ESPN and Discovery announcing 3D cable networks and Blu-ray recently settling on a high-definition 3D format, perhaps this really will be the year that 3D TVs take off.

My friend went to see it tonight and he said it was packed. This movie just seems to keep getting bigger.

At 4:00 this afternoon, we tried to get tickets for the IMAX showing at 6:30. Not only was that show sold out, but the 10:30 show was sold out as well.

LOL...maybe I'll get to see it sometime this spring.
Try different dates. Or call up tickets for your location to figure out when the next opening that works for you is , then scoot back online and book them (This is what I ended up doing).

You just show the card you used at concessions, they print up the tickets and you get in line for seating. Worked well. I know they have to have something open.

The software they have to book isn't the most intuitive thing, but it works.

Vatican Says 'Avatar' Is No Masterpiece

The Vatican newspaper and radio station have called the film "Avatar" simplistic, and criticized it for flirting with modern doctrines that promote the worship of nature as a substitute for religion.:ohno:
L'Osservatore Romano and Vatican Radio dedicated ample coverage to James Cameron's big-grossing, 3-D spectacle. But the reviews were lukewarm, calling the movie superficial in its eco-message, despite groundbreaking visual effects.
L'Osservatore said the film "gets bogged down by a spiritualism linked to the worship of nature." Similarly, Vatican Radio said it "cleverly winks at all those pseudo-doctrines that turn ecology into the religion of the millennium."
"Nature is no longer a creation to defend, but a divinity to worship," the radio said.
Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said that while the movie reviews are just that — film criticism, with no theological weight — they do reflect Pope Benedict XVI's views on the dangers of turning nature into a "new divinity."
Benedict has often spoken about the need to protect the environment, earning the nickname of "green pope." But he has sometimes balanced that call with a warning against neo-paganism.
In a recent World Day of Peace message, the pontiff warned against any notions that equate human person and other living things. He said such notions "open the way to a new pantheism tinged with neo-paganism, which would see the source of man's salvation in nature alone."
The Vatican newspaper occasionally likes to comment in its cultural pages on movies or pop culture icons, as it did recently about "The Simpsons" or U2. In one famous instance, several Vatican officials spoke out against "The Da Vinci Code."
In this case, the reviews came out after a red carpet preview held in Rome just a stone's throw from St. Peter's Square. The movie will be released Friday in Italy.
The story of the tall blue creatures who inhabit Pandora and contend with humans intent on grabbing the resources of their planet has made over $1.1 billion at box offices worldwide. Partly boosted by higher 3-D ticket prices, "Avatar" looks well on its way to becoming the biggest grossing movie of all time.
"So much stupefying, enchanting technology, but few genuine emotions," said L'Osservatore Romano, which devoted three articles to "Avatar" in its Sunday editions.
L'Osservatore Romano said the movie's plot is unoriginal and its message not new. It faulted Cameron for taking a "bland approach."
"He tells the story without going deep into it, and ends up falling into sappiness," it said.
Vatican Radio did say, however, that "really never before have such surprising images been seen,"@) while L'Osservatore said the movie's worth lies in its "extraordinary visual impact."

Avatar Box Office Continues to Break Records

<!--INFOLINKS_ON--> James Cameron’s sci-fi epic Avatar continues to break box office records for the fourth straight week. Avatar topped the weekend box office once again, raking in over $48 million in ticket sales.

Avatar

So far worldwide, Avatar has earned $1.34 billion, coming in second in total earnings only to James Cameron’s previous epic film, Titanic. Titanic earned $1.8 billion total. Although Avatar continues to creep up on that previous record, with sales starting to slow, it is still questionable if the new James Cameron film will manage to overtake the old in total sales.
Avatar now holds the record as the top grossing film of 2009 and the best fourth weekend ticket sales of any film in history.
Sherlock Holmes followed Avatar in second place at the weekend box office, with Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel coming in third. The anti-Twilight vampire flick Daybreakers pulled in at number four, with the Meryl Streep comedy It’s Complicated rounding out the top five.
We just feel embarrassed for any film that came in after Alvin and the Chipmunks. I’d resign from Hollywood if my movie debuted below a recycled film about animated, singing rodents…

Morons...

this is hilarious...

Avatar causing depression
.
LOS ANGELES - THE perfection of an idyllic planet populated by perfect blue aliens at one with nature and each other from the hugely successful movie Avatar, is causing ordinary humans to become depressed, reported entertainment media on Thursday.
The world created by director James Cameron is so perfect that entire support groups have sprung up to help fans cope with the fact that it doesn't exist.
According to an article in The Daily Telegraph, fans of the film have inundated dedicated websites with their confused and depressed postings, setting up discussion threads like 'Ways to cope with the depression of the dream of Pandora being intangible', which already has more than 1,000 posts.
In another forum a user wrote: 'When I woke up this morning after watching Avatar for the first time yesterday, the world seemed grey. It just seems so meaningless. I still don't really see any reason to keep doing things at all. I live in a dying world.' Other fans are even more affected by the situation, reported The Daily Telegraph, with one posting: 'I even contemplate suicide thinking that if I do it I will be rebirthed in a world similar to Pandora.'
Another report in The Daily Mail newspaper said that the detailed visual realism could be leading viewers to become particularly attached to the idea of the world.
Dr Stephan Quentzel, psychiatrist and Medical Director for the Louis Armstrong Centre for Music and Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Centre in New York told CNN: 'Virtual life is not real life and it never will be, but this is the pinnacle of what we can build in a virtual presentation so far. It has taken the best of our technology to create this virtual world and real life will never be as utopian as it seems onscreen. It makes real life seem more imperfect.':ohno:

Especially If you see this in IMAX 3D. The movie is so ridiculously immersive.

Hey, I wish I could be Jake Sully. But it's not going to happen.

My old lady saw it last night. She said effects were great. Story however, sucked. "Trite" is the way she put it.

Ah ya. She's on the money with that comment. What sells the whole package though is the effects combined with the story. Not too complex, not too simple. Great upstart actors, and mesh with the ground breaking cinematic.

It's not the most complex of scripts; but there is definitely food for thought.

There is a reason why people are walking away after seeing this in wonderment, thinking James Cameron is a genius, the guy is on his game.

If you get to see this in 3D, you just have not seen anything like it. This movie captures the imagination. It dazzles your mind.

Avatar beats Star Wars to become No 3 at all-time US box office

Who would bet against Avatar outpacing Titanic?

Avatar doesn't need James Cameron's Golden Globe double – it already has irresistible momentum of its own

Still going great guns … Avatar

The winner
Avatar overcame a potentially tricky challenge in its fifth weekend, beating new release The Book of Eli into second place as a further $41.3m (£25.3m) saw it hold on to pole position. Heading into Monday's Martin Luther King Day US public holiday on $491.8m, James Cameron's blue-skinned and now blue-blooded blockbuster has overtaken Star Wars to rank as the third highest North American release of all time. By the end of Monday it will have crossed $500m (£306m) with $533.3m firmly in its sights. That's how much The Dark Knight took when all was said and done, and Avatar should have no trouble coasting past to place second in the pantheon behind Cameron's previous epic, Titanic.

Whether Avatar can best Titanic's $600.8m North American record is another story. As the movie's two Golden Globe wins last night for dramatic film and director proved, it would take a brave soul to bet against it. Avatar has amassed $1.606bn globally and will overtake Titanic's $1.842bn worldwide tally within two weeks to become the highest grossing release in history, unadjusted for inflation, of course.

North American top 10, 15-17 January
1. Avatar, $41.3m. Total: $491.8m
2. The Book of Eli, $31.6m
3. The Lovely Bones, $17.1m. Total: $17.5m
4. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, $11.5m. Total: $192.6m
5. Sherlock Holmes, $9.8m. Total: $180m
6. The Spy Next Door, $9.7m
7. It's Complicated, $7.7m. Total: $88.2m
8. Leap Year, $5.8m. Total: $17.5m
9. The Blind Side, $5.6m. Total: $226.8m
10. Up in the Air, $5.5m. Total: $62.8m
