The great-grandson of the Syracuse woman who played Aunt Jemima has slammed Quaker Oats’ decision to change its packaging after outcry that the logo is racist.
Larnell Evans Sr., 66, calls it “an injustice for me and my family” that his great-grandmother, Anna Short Harrington, who portrayed Aunt Jemima from 1935 to 1954, is being erased from the brand’s history.

“This is part of my history, sir,” said Evans, a Marine Corps veteran, tells Patch. “The racism they talk about, using images from slavery, that comes from the other side — white people. This company profits off images of our slavery. And their answer is to erase my great-grandmother’s history. A black female… It hurts.”

After 130 years, Quaker is finally changing the name of their popular pancake brand, Aunt Jemima, theGrio previously reported. Acknowledging that the brand was based on a racial stereotype, the name of the product will change and the imagery removed.
The company said it aims “to make progress toward racial equality” amid nationwide protests over race relations in the wake of th police killing George Floyd.

Quaker Oaks intends to change other stereotypical logos on brands including Uncle Ben’s, Cream of Wheat and Mrs. Butterworth.
Evans, however, does not co-sign with this erasure of history
“This woman served all those people, and it was after slavery. She worked as Aunt Jemima. That was her job,” he said. “How do you think I feel as a black man sitting here telling you about my family history they’re trying to erase?”
The original Aunt Jemima logo was based on a woman named Nancy Green who was a “storyteller and missionary worker.” Green was born enslaved.
Harrington was the third Aunt Jemima. She was discovered by representatives from Quaker Oats while cooking pancakes at the 1935 New York State Fair, per syracuse.com.

In 1989, the image was updated to show Aunt Jemima in pearl earrings and a newly-coiffed hairstyle. However, the name and her mammy-oriented personality remained.
Evans believes “white corporations” that profit off of the culture should pay restitution rather than “erase history like it didn’t happen.”
Harrington reportedly served up her delicious dishes for many fraternity houses at Syracuse University. She is buried in Syracuse.

Families of former Aunt Jemima ambassadors concerned about rebranding
'Her story should not be erased from history,' great-niece to Lillian Richard says

The families of two women who portrayed Quaker Oats' Aunt Jemima expressed concerns about the company's decision to scrap the controversial branding, saying it could erase their family histories.

Relatives of the late Lillian Richard and Anna Short Harrington, two women who were hired by Quaker Oats to portray the character in the 1920s and 1930s, spoke out this week after PepsiCo's Quaker Oats said the brand's "origins are based on a racial stereotype."

Representatives for Quaker Oats did not immediately respond to FOX Business' request for comment.

"This is an injustice for me and my family. This is part of my history, sir," Larnell Evans Sr., a great-grandson of Harrington, told Patch.com. "The racism they talk about, using images from slavery, that comes from the other side — white people. This company profits off images of our slavery. And their answer is to erase my great-grandmother's history. A black female. … It hurts."

Harrington began appearing on the company's products after being discovered by Quaker Oats in 1935, Evans told Patch.com. She toured the country serving pancakes while clad in the Aunt Jemima get-up, he said.

"This woman served all those people, and it was after slavery," he said. "She worked as Aunt Jemima. That was her job. … How do you think I feel as a black man sitting here telling you about my family history they're trying to erase?"

Around the same time, Richard, from Hawkins, Texas, became an ambassador for the brand after being discovered by the company in nearby Dallas, according to Vera Harris, family historian and great-niece to Richard.

At the time, promoting the brand around Texas was considered an "honorable job," Harris told FOX Business, adding that the "Richard family was proud of her."

The family understands the company's decision to rebrand, but they are concerned about what it will mean for Richard's legacy, Harris said.

"We just don't want my aunt's legacy -- what she did making an honest living at the time -- to be wiped away," she said. "Her story should not be erased from history."

Richard had worked for the company for roughly 23 years before passing away in 1965, according to historical documents obtained by the Harris family.

"If we wipe out our history, we have nothing to strive for in the future," she added. "Our history will help us prosper in the future."

In the wake of Quaker Oats' decision, more companies announced plans to revisit their branding, including B&G Foods' Cream of Wheat, Conagra Brands Inc.'s Mrs. Butterworth, and Mars Inc's Uncle Ben's.

The changes coincide with a nationwide call for racial justice and police reforms following the death of George Floyd, a handcuffed black man who died in police custody in Minneapolis.

These companies bowing to the loud minority because they do not want to be called a racist company.

Meanwhile most of the country think these companies are shit and will boycott them

Also as you can see these companies are erasing a proud families history, tarnishing the image of family members

It really is disgusting what these companies are and will do to make a buck....

Meanwhile many of U.S. companies that manufacture products in China employ slave labor to make those products
I don't see any of these fake groups up in arms over that.
Lebron James makes money off the backs of slaves in China to make his sneakers and such but he is ok with that
James is an ignorant piece of shit!!!

So does someone want to 'splain to me how a woman who was the model breakfast maker and a man who was the face of the best selling rice in America from the fifties into the nineties, are insults to the black community?

I would think that they would be work models. People for the black community to be proud of in an era where blacks weren't exactly dominating ad models.

How about Kapershit, Jordan, Le Brawn, Shaq, Tiger, Big Papi, or Tony Big Hair Polamalu? Why aren't we canceling their ads?

Somebody needs to do some 'splainin'.

The Aunt Jemima breakfast brand is being scrapped amid a nationwide campaign that’s canceled everything from TV cop shows to high school names for the sake of racial sensitivity.

The 130-year-old maple syrup mascot received fierce backlash following nationwide Black Lives Matter protests over the killings of George Floyd and several other black Americans.

“We recognize Aunt Jemima’s origins are based on a racial stereotype,” Kristin Kroepfl, vice president and chief marketing officer of Quaker Foods North America, tells NBC News. The PepsiCo subsidiary representative added that retiring Jemima from syrup packaging was part of an effort by the company “to make progress toward racial equality.”

The logo was originally based off the song “Old Aunt Jemima” by a minstrel show performer, CNN reports. The character has since undergone several makeovers, most recently the removal of the “mammy” handkerchief from around her neck, amid criticism that Jemima perpetuated Jim Crow-era stereotypes.

Still, the current iteration was torched online amid growing racial tensions across the nation.

Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian tweeted Tuesday, “How is Aunt Jemima not canceled??” with a link to a viral TikTok video by the singer Kirby detailing the sordid origins of the pancake pariah. The clip, titled “How To Make A Non Racist Breakfast,” racked up 2 million views on Twitter alone and was the No. 10 trending topic in the US on the social media platform, according to Yahoo Finance.

Kroepfl has since admitted in her statement that the previous efforts to “update” the brand to be more “appropriate and respectful” were insufficient.

How can they be overlooking this product ? The Count has also used black face, although they call it chocolate face

Truthfully, I always found Vanilla Ice offensive, can we start a class action against his record label?
