Well, you can all see fellas that this isn’t an easy black/white issue. I suspect Will doesn’t want to ring in here with an answer because he may one day be haunted by his comments. I don’t blame him. We can create “ethical thing to do” situations all day long. How about a few more…Let’s pretend you’re the BM of a sportsbook in C/R. What would you do if confronted with these two situations?

1) A 17 year old is gambling online from a state that prohibits online gambling, and he’s down $10,000. His parent calls you and informs you of his age. The parent also informs you that this money was intended for his college. The parent then tells you to return all the lost $$$.

2) A guy by the name of Carlos Mendoza - from Columbia - wants to send $500,000 to your sportsbook, but it’s all in cash. He wants you to suggest ways in which he can get the $$$ into your sportsbook.

Lander, you don’t need to bother answering. I know what you do in each of the 2 cases. First case you would return the money without a single flicking second of hesitation. And case #2, you would tell the Colombian to “go take a hike.”

No Suet.

1. Tough shit. Return his balance, keep what he lost. Sounds like the kid LIED about his age when he registered & needs stricter parental control. This type of kid would have partied 24/7 in college and flunked out anways - he has NO responisiblity or self-control.

2. No. I do NOT suggest ANY payments. I then run his name by every bookmaking buddy I have to see if he's what he appears to be - a launderer.

Lander, my oh my, this poor [Hispanic] kid, who has only his stellar academic performance going for him, has dreamed of becoming a gynecologist since he was 6 years old, and you’re telling me you’re going to deny him that opportunity?… to be all he can be? How can this poor [Hispanic} kid be responsible for deciphering right from wrong? He’s just a kid! Aren’t you holding him to standards normally reserved for mature adults? I really had no idea, lander, you could be this cold, cruel and heartless. You must have spent your formative years in NY City….

Lander, you designed this thread to build this towering ethical pedestal, space reserved for only a chosen few, which ostensibly included yourself. Then, with one callus post you seem to reveal the very nature you intended to condemn in your initial post. I don’t get it.

The right, moral, EHTICAL thing to do in this situation is, of course, to return all monies that were received and wagered illegally. I really don’t see how anyone such impeccable ethical standards, as you seem to suggest you possess, could decide otherwise.

Sorry for the apparent lack of responsiveness gentlemen. I had shit to do. Now allow me to answer the questions.

Jimbo, my man:

Stop trying to put me in the middle of this dilemma. None of what I have to say will serve any good at this point. If I say "Yes Jimbo, we do take past post bets", we catch fire for not following our own rules and if I say "No Jimbo, we don't accept any past post bets", then Cascade cathes the fire. There's no winning situation here and I refuse to put myself in a situation like that. Furthermore Jimbo, there are an infinity of factors that a book needs to consider when dealing with a customer. If it ever happens to us, we'll discuss it with the customer directly.

Suetoneous

In order to answer your first question, I must say we're in the business of providing a honest and reliable out for gamblers. It's not our job to enforce strict parental controls. That should solely be the obligation of parents. If my son was the kid in question, why should I evade my responsibility for not having taught my kid to make the right decisions at all times. Why should somebody else pay for my lack of controls?

I believe Lander puts it very well. We would most likely return the funds in the current balance in the account. How would we react in the specefic situation you describe? Once again, we will cross that bridge when we get there.

As for your second question, I believe that question can be asked not only to a bookie, but to a banker or to any other person, which business involves the direct handling of cash. I cannot answer that question for others; but in our specefic case, you can rest assured we don't wanna have anything to do with any form of revenue that does not include legitimate bookmaking...

And please undertsand we're not dodging the core of the matter here, but assuming God's role and wanting to teach people how to assume PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY for their actions is NOT our business. We're simply bookies. Our job is to provide you players with a reliable and trusted place to play. We pay winners, we collect from losers. As simple as that.

Have a nice evening gentlemen.

Will

Suet,
First off, you have competely misinterperted my post to serve as an ethical guide to gambling. I'm certain that your play on words was intentional, so you could prove something to yourself.

But look, since I'm a nice guy let me clear up what 2 pages of posts hasn't taught you - my post has NOTHING to do with ethics, so put the circular philosophy guide down.

It has to do with reality.

I am not a bookie, but if I was here are the rules I would set forth -

1. NO wagers with be processed before I get the funds.
2. NO credit cards will be accepted.
3. All bets over $500 MUST be called in AND approved.
4. If you attempt to extort my book I WILL NOT pay you. The money will be sent to charity & your personal info will be delivered to EVERY bookie I have contact with.

Very simple - You play with honesty & you are paid.

>>>Frankly, I cannot stomach this anymore. I feel that you are jeopardizing the honest players that put their faith into your company by compromising your finanicial and ethical positions.<<<

Landers, I’m not blind. I do see the word “ethical” in your initial post. Reality and ethics are two entirely separate issues, IMO. First let’s tackle reality. The reality is that sportsbooks want $$$! Who doesn’t?! To this end, they spend countless thousands on advertising - for which the Shirk and all his employees are eternally grateful.. MONEY IS KING - it always has been. This offering then manifest in the form of deposits. But most sportsbooks, feeling the pinch of competition, offer bonuses. These bonuses (20% and more) then lure more, right? All these sportsbook know that 9 of 10 who bet will lose. NAME ONE SPORTSBOOK who reveals that in their banner ad? The reality of every gambler is: If I make a bet, YOU PAY ME. It is the only thing that truly counts.

As for ethics, each book is responsible for clearly establishing their rules for playing at their establishment, and abiding by those rules. So the ethical standards are set by the book, not by some arbitrary input postured by an anonymous poster at the Rx. The Rio and WSEX settled in favor of the gambler… because there was NO CLEAR and concise reason to decide otherwise.

And lander, as for your conditions if you were a bookie, your not in reality. Name one sportsbook that won’t accept any credit card deposits? Nane ONE sportsbook that will require a bettor to phone in a bet over $500?

Will, you cleverly ducked my question(s).

I'm pretty sure that just about 1 hour ago Will just said that Hollywood doesn't.

VIP & Gameday require me to. (actually for much less than $500).
BlueMarlin is that club too.
Surely there are others, but I'm not all-knowing - perhaps you could provide us with the entire list?

Am I back in your reality club? or should I philosophize about nonsense for a while first?

Ok, great. Let me know.

This is not scientific data Pancho. This thread is about facts, it's about truth - so let's leave the imaginary poll data out, ok?
Thanks.

Now, who else thinks these books have a responsibility to protect the honest player?

I actually agree with Lander here. With a few obvious exceptions, there are a lot of posters who will give a situation an honest evaluation.

I can't understand what all the fuss is about here. Wsex took a $40k liability on the biggest soccer match in Euope last weekend. They took this at +120 at a time when a couple of decent European books were going +135 on Manu against a strong Newcastle side playing at home.

They took these bets roughly 5 hours before the match kicked off. Sure all the bets were from one guy, but from the book's perspective what does it matter whether the liability was with one guy or 10,000 different guys?

The liability is the same either way. They had FIVE HOURS to resolve whatever problems - if any - this action had caused their overall book on this game.

They chose to do nothing. Numerous times I personally have put on several $500 bets on with wsex on the same outcome and had up to $2k on it. No problem from them win or lose, so in principle they are 100% OK with what Revere did.

If Newcastle had equalised in the last five minutes instead of losing possession I don't think Revere or anyone else would have heard anything more about the whole matter.

Revere was as sharp as hell but in my opinion it was Wsex doing the scamming here not the bettor.
