This is indeed a very interesting post, Lander. I decided to stop by and chime in, firstly because you asked me to, but also simply because this issue attains the very nature of this industry. I would like to clear up one thing as well: the following post is based merely on my personal opinion.
I think I have stated this in the past; above all rules, tacit and written, there’s one golden rule: DO NOT GET GREEDY. While ambition is healthy and probably what ultimately drives any business man; GREED gentlemen, grows like a cancer and like a cancer becomes pernicious of your self.
Reviewing the 2 situations at hand, I would not be prompt to judge any of the players and posters involved in them, for I do not know the details in depth. Furthermore, if the top guys at WSEX and RIO decided to pay the guys, I firmly believe they must have reasons of weight. The obligation of a player as a player is to look for an edge, a factor that could increase his edge. In both cases the guys have used grey areas to find loopholes in the structure of the books. And the obligation of the books is to eliminate those gray areas.
We could discuss endlessly about the legitimacy of this type of events. But we all know all this boils down to ETHICS and unfortunately, in that field everybody has different values. I’m not here to be judgmental. I’m not here to point fingers at anybody. I’m here to ask you all fine gentlemen one simple question:
Is the ultimate purpose of the forums to become a way of extortion against the books?
I would dare to say NO. We have had a few disputes with different customers of ours in the past, but our main interest, as well as the player’s was to reach a REASONABLE solution, where both parts were beneficed. And the dispute was never aired in a forum.
Now, I have had the chance to read all kinds of posts regarding this issue. I’ll try to summon them all (once again, this is what others have posted and how others may have perceived the parts involved in these situations):
The books, that were extorted to a certain extent.
The players involved. As I have said before; I would never dare to judge anybody, even if I knew all the details. These guys have been called “angleshooters”.
And those players that would never try to play in the ways exposed.
I hope we never cease to understand us all, players and bookers as part of a community. If we do things to attempt against the well-being of one player or one book, we’re attempting against the well-being of us all.
I will also quote a couple of posts that I have found to be very interesting and that I believe will provide us all with some food for the thought:

Some will pull for the book and some for the player. That's why I say in life do what you think is best and let the chips fall where they may. Opinions that I find very interesting.
