Tim wakefield won his his sixth game in his last seven starts and 150th as a Red Sox by defeating the Baltimore Orioles tonight 7-4 on his 41st birthday. He is 13 and 9 on the season, he pitched seven innings giving up six hits and three runs tonight, his personal catcher Doug Miarbelli had three hits including a homer...

Only Cy Young and Roger Clemens have more wins in team history with 192 wins each while wearing a Red Sox uniform than Wakefield..

Not bad for guy who is also a great family man and very charitable off the field. Major league sports overall could use more Tim Wakefields, Red Sox player or not..

no doubt, and this is a feel good player.. whether you love or hate Boston.

Fish may be right, Wake may pitch til he's 55 and still win 300 games.

he went to college about 25 minutes from were I live. Word is he could put a smiley face on the baseball, and when he threw it you could see the smiley face coming at you. but ya he is a great guy.

Very average pitcher. I'd like to see his numbers if he didn't pitch for a winning team his entire career. Probably would be out of a job 5-6 years ago. Don't know why Boston holds on to him, he's just holding them down.

hardly...

he's an innings monster,he keeps a bullpen rested... all teams can use a guy like this, he wasn't even a regular starter til age 27, great clubhouse guy capable of winning 15 games after age 40, that is pretty valuable.

I'm a huge Red Sox fan (No way Rob, for real?!)

But the one player I havent liked for the last 4-5 years is Tim Wakefield. I cant stand watching the guy pitch, anytime we face a good line up like the Yanks its an automatic loss.

I know Timmy is a great guy, he's managed some good numbers etc. If it were up to me, he would NEVER see a start in the playoffs.

Winning 15 games on a very good offensive Boston team isn't too difficult. Furthermore, your defintion and mine of "capable" must be dramatically different considering he's only done it (win 15 games or more) once in the last 9 seasons.

Great clubhouse guy and inning eater is fine if you're playing for an average or below par team but Boston can do much better IMO. I give credit where credit is due but I havn't seen anything special from Wakefeild. Very inconsistant, gets his numbers to medicore-level by beating very young ball clubs. Boston should have higher expectations.

Furthermore, pitching against Tim in the MLB video game is bullocks. You should not be able to locate that pitch every time. It's non sense!

it could be worse they could've signed a 43 year old pitcher to a $28,000,000 contract for 1 year and then watch him go 3-5 with a 4.23 ERA and give up 8 runs in less than 2 innings work today.

This is the gayest urban legend I've ever heard.

I thought the "Legend has it...." phrases were supposed to end with something tough or strong. And Wakefield gets stuck with smiley faces. Tough break.

Seeing how Wakefield is a #4 starter (behind Schilling, Beckett and Dice-K) his 13 wins so far this year are not bad in fact I doubt if there is a better #4 starter in baseball. He gives up runs like every other pitcher in baseball but he also works deep into games better than any other pitcher in baseball this year starting 22 games he has 22 decisions at 13-9. He has no starts where he did not get a decision. The only pitcher in both leagues with more wins than Wakefield right now is Chicago Cub All Star and Ace of the staff Carlos Zambrano who has 14 wins in 23 starts.

Take the Detroit Tigers who arguably have the best starting staff in baseball - there #4 man is Nick Robertson who is 6-8 with a 5.08 ERA this year. The Indians another top AL team is using Jake Westbrook in the 4 slot, he is at 1-6 on the season. Then there is the Yankees #4 guy Mike Mussina who is at 6-7 and making $11Million to Wakefields $4Million this year.

Tim Wakefield off the field

Tim plays a major role with Pitching In For Kids
Pitching in for Kids, Inc. (PIFK) is a dynamic nonprofit organization dedicated to providing carefully earmarked grants, designed to improve the lives of children across the New England region.

The founders, supported by their diverse and accomplished volunteer Board of Advisors, raise grant funds by organizing unique special events. The fund-raising events are distinguished by both their investor participation in sports-related activities, and further set apart by the endorsement and presence of prominent regional athletic figures. Because our city and region loves its sports and sports figures, using this theme as a draw allows Pitching in for Kids to concentrate its efforts on optimizing fund-raising opportunities and minimizing administrative costs.

Tantamount to PIFK’s efforts is the notion that children are our region’s most precious assets. As such, they must have access to information, education, recreation and advocacy at every juncture. Our area’s neediest children find themselves without necessary resources, especially in this time of state cutbacks and fiscally conservative social program policies.

Pitching in for Kids helps close funding gaps to ensure the identified children benefit from carefully targeted grants designed to address a very specific child-related need, project or program. Once a tangible physical or recreational need is identified, PIFK will evaluate each recipient organization to ensure that the entire grant is directed toward the identified need.

Pitching in for Kids encourages children to participate in its special events to learn crucial life skills, as well as encourage the spirit of initiative and giving within the community.
As an organized, and experienced, yet all volunteer, organization, Pitching in for Kids creates fun and lucrative special event opportunities to benefit children in a myriad of ways, all of which enhance the lives, minds and spirits of our region’s children, New England’s greatest asset.
