I remember when i worked at the Sheraton i set my parents up at that resort for $75. (employee rate).

They loved it, they had access to like 5 resorts that were all beside each other. It really is a fantastic place to visit.

While a lot of us talk about the ladies in Thailand I saw quite a few families in Phuket. Actually, there is only one street (Soi Bangla) that has the bars. The rest of the Patong Beach area is mostly small shops selling cheap goods. Lots of fake watches but also lots of quality tailors. I bought 6 custom-made shirts for $97 in 2006. I still wear them today.

Other things you can do there is parasailing, snorkeling and scuba diving(the water is very warm in the Andaman Sea being so far south). Phuket is one of the top scuba diving places in the world.

Haven't been to Costa Rica, but if you have money and you come to Thailand you can live like a king. Lots of women, good food, very lively country. I haven't been to Puket or Chaing-Mai yet but everyone says they are amazing. The Thai people love Americans.

Please stay in Costa Rica...everything you hear about Thailand is rumor..:lolBIG::lolBIG:

cost of living is half what it is in Costa Rica...especially when you add everything up together..

I dont think u can compare Phuket and Pattaya. Phuket is beautiful with crystal clear beaches etc, a tropical paradise.

Pattaya is simply a large whore house with rotten beaches. (dont get me wrong, I love Pattaya, and I am sure golf and other activities are fum, but its not a great place to be if you love the ocean).

You are correct, but travel about 30 minutes to the islands off of Pattaya and you will be impressed...and Pattaya is not simply a large whore house as you suggest...try visiting the many temples, botanical gardens, fine restaurants, and zoos....:toast:

Viejo, when I was in Phuket I asked about ownership and was told that farang (foreigners) could own homes but not the land they were on. I'm not sure my source was correct though. Have you looked into purchasing a home?

In previous posts it was said that Thai women are easy or are not shy. This is true but people shouldn't think every Thai woman is a whore. Many will go to discos and night clubs and will go home with a man as a part-time job. Most just work their day job.

Also, it was said that Americans are well-liked in Thailand. This is true. However, there is some resentment by local Thai men of Americans with money hanging out with Thai women.

You can own a home if you put it in your significant Thai other's name...then you will own it until the ink drys...

I'm stuck in bangkok for a few weeks and then travelling around Thailand once my other friends get here. Not sure if we are going to Pattaya or not but will PM if I go.

To help answer the other questions, the trip cost me $900 round trip from LA and took 17-18 hours. Hot as heck and humid. So far really impressed with the food compared with other non US locales I've been to....if you like thai food, you'll be in heaven.

I see you flew in the economy section...pretty tight quarters....

I fly from LA after spending a couple of days there...I fly Eva Air...11.5-12.5 hours to Taiwan...2 hour layover and then the 4.5 hour flight to Bangkok...I fly business class that runs anywhere between 2400-2800 bucks round trip...great big seats that adjust so you can sleep....your own tv screen in front of you with tons of movies, music, and games...shower facilities in Taiwan when you make the lay over...the flight attendants are twice as nice and efficient as US ones...good food and free internet in LA and Taiwan...well worth the money...

But what are the odds of getting pulled over at a checkpoint? Cops don't seem to pull anyone over here. I dont have a car, my friends and I take taxis.

Lots of checkpoints on the highways outside Bangkok and Pattaya...see them all the time when coming home from golf....

Thais love Americans because they treat them better than the Europeans and the Middle Easterners....it is all about respect...and the fact that the population of tourists over here consists maybe of 10% Americans...Americans also tip better...:103631605

Hey Viejo, in all the time you have spent in Thailand, has a cop ever asked you to show him your passport?

No cop will ever ask to see your passport unless you have committed a crime.

Not true.

Furthermore the Thai police force is full of corruption. For example
a well known scam is falsely accusing tourists of dropping a cigarette
that someone who actually smokes discarded, taking the accused
to a secluded area and refusing to let him go unless he hands over
the fine of thousands of baht.

The stories are way overhyped. I just talked to some travel agent chick on Suhkumvit Soi 5 in Bangkok. She was telling me that it is extremely unlikely you will ever be asked for your passport unless you've committed a crime and even if you are you could likely bribe the cops.

Ive been here 6 weeks and I have had zero interaction with any cops. My friend has been here 4 years and has had like 4, and one of them was a busted poker game, the other time he was on coke and somehow the cops just knew he was from like 200 feet away and subjected him to a search. The other time some hooker took a stack of like 20000 BAHT and put it in her pocket (playfully) but my friend snapped and slammed her up against the Taxi and the Taxi driver drove them to the police department.

If you stay low key and don't get into trouble, I seriously doubt any run ins with the law here. I dont drive, I take taxis so it makes it even easier. The chick told me that even if you get into an accident and didnt commit any crime it is unlikely the cops will search you. I believe her, from what I've seen here.

These stories about falsely accusing people of dropping cigarettes for cash, etc, cmon man, they are pussy rhymes.

Thanks for answering my question guys. I appreciate it. Captain Kirk, I hope you get your visa situation straightened out soon. I know if I ever went there, I'd be doing the exact same thing.
Thanks, guys, great thread! It would be awesome if we had a thread like this for every foregein country for people like me who have no clue what living there would be like. :toast:

Just looked up the weather for Bangcock...next 10 days mid to low 90's every day with chance of scattered showers. Everything else about the country seems, but the weather part kinda scares me. How do you guys handle that? That sound like Fla. weather in the middle of the summer. to me it makes it hard to just go outside for a few hours, let alone DO anything outside like shoot basketball.

Well, you are a newbie to Thailand. What would you expect your travel
agent to say? I've lived in the country more often than not over the
past 4 years. I've spent many hours on forums full of farang vets who
concur with my comments. But feel free to take your chances of not
having your passport checked, which would put you in a Thai prison.
What are the odds...you used the example of the Cubs winning the
series?...they are 33/1 at bet365.
