In one way or another, I would say everybody in the world is a slave in some capacity. The best we can do is live each day to the fullest. Good luck batslaves.

But compared to the amount of money some of these books bring in, the clerks are paid like slaves.

I was a sportsbook clerk in Las Vegas at various casinos....and "yes" there were purks....

Once in a while a gratuity was received and we got to work with some showgirls who worked the monday night football games for some extra money. They sure were pretty and they look good up close too....

I acted on some tips when they were given early so I could get the bet down....You had to be good at figuring what was a good real tip and what was bullsh(t.......

I only got burned once on a bullsh(t inside info that I thought was real....

Most money bet at my window was 80K on a DeLahoya fight. Odds were 1 to 8...Thats right 80K to win 10K. A crowd formed just to watch us count the money....

I have many many stories, some I wont tell, but it was a wild ride.....

This was in an era before the fbi and gaming raided the casinos about three years ago....

JJ, I really doubt you have ever been to an offshore book, they are not treated like slaves and they usually make 2 to 3 times what the rest of the people are making in their country!

How tough is it for an American to get a job as a clerk? I imagine the books have tons of applications from the locals.

It's tougher for an "american" because for you the wages are substantially less for you then you would make here. Secondly, you are not a local, therefore your cost of living will be higher and last but not least you are a risk to bring to a foreign country and one most books are not prepared to take. If you really want a job at a sportsbook, I suggest Vegas as your 1st choice and if you want to go out of country start calling every book on this site and ask if they need help!

Eric-

You are right in that the money they make is pretty good for Costa Rica. However, you are wrong about how they are treated (at least at some books). There are some owners that treat the clerks very badly and harbor very racist attitudes like the clerks are liars, lazy, unintelligent, etc. (ironically, many of the qualities possessed by those owners themselves)

The clerk wages have gone up a bit as the business and the demand have grown. Many clerks are university students and are far more educated in business management, marketing, mathematics, etc. than the owners. However, few get the opportunity to use their advanced skills.

slaves is a bit harsh. Although some shops do not have much regard for their clerks/employees, some do, alot of them do in fact. I guess it just depends on the core of the business and as you know, many sportsbook owners are not in that percentage of folks you would want to have as friends, relatives or even know....

Some sportsbook treat their people great, offer them free lunches, allow them to actually think for a change, give them the opportunity to study for school when its not busy, provide enough entertainment (like tvs), give reasonable breaks, etc etc.... other books though, dont allow you to eat at all (not even a cookie, Wednesday morning 10 am when the nearest game is 14 hours away...) barely give bathroom breaks, change scheduling the day before, make people work excruciating hours, etc etc....others, well, they close shop one day, screw 93% of their employees forcing them to sign papers freeing them of all responsability when theyre paying them less than a 10th of what they make and then set up shop somewhere elselike nothing ever happened.

JJ, yes a few few percentage of them are slaves but most are treated fairly decent. Of course, once you work at a book, say goodbye to every holiday known to mankind. Christmas? Yeah, thats the one with the boozed up guy in the red suit right? I think I have more "football related" stories about Christmas than actual Christmas stories to tell....

oh and yes, those that do qualify for that "slave" tag have to put up with some of the most incredible things, it is truly a very sad thing. Few things must be worse than an ignorant sportsbook owner that thinks everything he does-thinks is right and were all a bunch of morons.

Hmmmmm...
I think it is more frustrating for us clerks to see how much money some of these companies make and get paid $2 an hour, then supposed to really appriciate it cause what of what the normal wages in costa rica are, and its like $1 an hour so it really isnt that much more.

Rather not bash any book but anything under $4 and hour is a pretty low wage... Some books will say starting off that you make $4 an hour but they with hold a $1 for the first three months so you really get paid $3 it is a bit mis leading. Sure we make more than some people with degrees of some sort but for the amount of money these books make the employyes should be compensated a little better. Any one agree?

I imagine it depends on the book, but that number is too high, no way it is %20...

JJ, you are somewhat correct in that statement. Some shops like Big Nasa, Little Nasa and some other legit shops are notorious for treating employees like slaves.

More misleading info from the INSIDER himself.
