yes they did. How can you say that being from the Detroit area. Come on the jobs bank and getting stoned and drunk and always wanting more and more and more. The workers are just that workers. If you do not like the job or the pay go find another job that will pay more. The UAW killed Detroit Axle and VW didn't come here after then UAW dude said he would rather American Axle close than to except the contract.

Well what happened yep they left to Mexico and VW went to the south. I would never open a business that had to deal with a union like the UAW

You are delusionial the UAW did not kill American Axle. There is always someone to work for cheaper wages. Look at wages they are going down. Is the price of what you buy going down ? NO! Only thing going up is the CEO pay and his cronies.

It's good to be chief executive.
American CEOs saw their pay spike 15 percent last year, after a 28 percent pay rise the year before, according to a report by GMI Ratings cited by The Guardian. Meanwhile, workers saw their inflation-adjusted wages fall 2 percent in 2011, according to the Labor Department.

That's in line with a trend that dates back three decades. CEO pay spiked 725 percent between 1978 and 2011, while worker pay rose just 5.7 percent, according to a study by the Economic Policy Institute released on Wednesday. That means CEO pay grew 127 times faster than worker pay.

Income inequality between CEOs and workers has consequently exploded, with CEOs last year earning 209.4 times more than workers, compared to just 26.5 times more in 1978 -- meaning CEOs are taking home a larger percentage of company gains.

That trend comes despite workers nearly doubling their productivity during the same time period, when compensation barely rose. Worker productivity spiked 93 percent between 1978 and 2011 on a per-hour basis, and 85 percent on a per-person basis, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

Meanwhile, workers saw their inflation-adjusted wages fall in recent years as corporations postponed giving raises while adding to their record corporate profits

Read the whole story not just post headlines. Also out of the Central Services are the mounted horse division of the Detroit Police.

"DWSD has a blacksmith shop in our Central Services Facility," Edwards said. The shop "also ... repairs equipment and works with various metals and welding for the department when needed." The horseshoer now works at the Central Services Facility.
The city pays $29,245 in salary and about $27,000 in benefits for the position.

Lot of bashing of Detroit in this thread. The history of its music is 2nd to none. One of so many gems that are a part of its history.
Saw this in another thread and felt it belonged here as well. It's not ALL depression in the D.

Kid's a good guy who really steps up and gives back to the city.

They are about to get their first Chain supermarket in a long long time pretty soon at the corner of 8 mile and Woodward. A Meijers. Which is similar to a Walmart on a smaller scale here. It going to be a pretty big deal here when it opens and then they are going to tear that muther up!. It'll cost 3-4 times the amount to secure the store from theft and other various labor. But they will shop the shit out of that store. Black folks love to spend their money in a grocery store. Especially the first 10 + days of the month when the food stamps are distributed. Actually they are all on EBT cards they now call them. They put money on a credit card because they would sell their food stamps for real cash. At quite a discount. The store owners were the biggest culprits.
Its funny, but in the suburbs, while shopping and you change your mind about an item, they usually give the unwanted item to the cashier or put a refrigerated item back in a cooler even if its in the right spot. ...In the city, its nothing to go down the bread or soap Isle the next morning and find a pack of ribs or a pack of steaks, or ice cream right there on the shelf. Lot of times hidden a little, but not always. They just don't give a fuck. LOL It's not their job to put it back where it belongs! LOL

They distribute the EBT funds 2X/month now. Guarantee if that Meijers succeeds, Wal-Mart will be there.

I know dude, im not arguing, its the armpit of america if you ask me, there are only a FEW nice areas, and that is pushing it. why someone would want to live there is beyond me.

they are putting the casino r5 blocks from the worse part of cincinnati. This is not going to go well

Most non-indian casinos are built in the worst areas. How else are they going to get cheap land?

here's an idea : have the federal gov't but up the land that is so rock bottom cheap and turn detroit into a military town. My original thought after reading this thread was "bring in the national guard". but screw that... bringing in military to patrol is just going to cost money. Take it a step further. make it the HOME of our national guard.

Got a white mayoral candidate just threw his hat into the ring for next mayor. We haven't had a white mayor here since Coleman Young took over in 1974. 40 years of decay since.

Detroit's a financial mess. This guy took over all the hospitals years ago and has shown a profit for the last 9 years in a row. He might actually have a chance. But I doubt it.

They're never giving up power. They'll burn it down first.

I did too. But it's just too overwhelming I guess.

How do you fix a city with no money?

They just elected the first white mayor in Detroit in 40 years. Honestly never thought I'd see this again. Things are looking up here again.
